The expansion of urban areas has raised significant concerns about its impact on the bird community, particularly wetland-dependent species. The transformation of natural habitats into urban areas presents unique challenges and alternatives for these species, requiring a reassessment of conventional conservation paradigms. Among these species, the Spot-billed Pelican (classified as 'Near Threatened' by the IUCN and listed under schedule-IV of the IWPA) is a wetland-dependent bird indigenous to India. Instead of preferring natural habitats (wetlands), it now prefers urban habitats for roosting and nesting. The species has also been observed to prefer telecom towers for roosting and courtship during the breeding season. This observation is one of the first to lead to an understanding of the behavioural plasticity of wetland bird species towards adaptation in an anthropogenic setting. This suggests an early warning sign of habitat degradation in their historical breeding and feeding grounds in neighbouring states. The likely reason for the congregation's selection of these anthropogenic structures may be related to resource availability, adjacent feeding grounds and/or habitat suitability. Introduction: Highly pathogenic avian influenza A H5N1 clade 2.3.4.4b (hereafter H5N1) is causing vast impacts on biodiversity and poultry around the globe. In Chile, lethal H5N1 cases have been reported in a wide range of wild bird species, marine mammals, backyard and industrial poultry, and humans. This study describes the spatio-temporal patterns of the current epizootic of H5N1 in Chile and test drivers that could be associated with outbreak occurrence. Methods: We used H5N1 cases reported by the Chilean National Animal Health Authority from 5 December 2022 to 5 April 2023. These included wild bird cases confirmed through an avian influenza-specific real-time reverse transcription PCR assay (RT-qPCR), obtained from passive and active surveillance. Data were analyzed to detect the presence of H5N1 clusters under space-time permutation probability modeling, the association of H5N1 with distance and days since the first outbreak through linear regression, and the correlation of H5N1 presence with a number of ecological and anthropogenic variables using general linear modeling. Results: From 445 H5N1 identified outbreaks involving 613 individual cases in wild birds, a consistent wave-like spread of H5N1 from north to south was identified, which may help predict hotspots of outbreak risk. For instance, seven statistically significant clusters were identified in central and northern Chile, where poultry production and wildlife mortality are concentrated. The presence of outbreaks was correlated with landscape-scale variables, notably temperature range, bird richness, and human footprint. Discussion: In less than a year, H5N1 has been associated with the unusual mortality of >100,000 individuals of wild animals in Chile, mainly coastal birds and marine mammals. It is urgent that scientists, the poultry sector, local communities, and national health authorities co-design and implement science-based measures from a One Health perspective to avoid further H5N1 spillover from wildlife to domestic animals and humans, including rapid removal and proper disposal of wild dead animals and the closure of public areas (e.g., beaches) reporting high wildlife mortalities. The northern Gulf of Mexico supports a substantial level of oil and gas extraction in marine waters and experiences acute and chronic exposure to marine pollution events. The region also supports a diverse array of breeding and migratory seabirds that are exposed to these pollutants during foraging and other activities. Among the pollutants of highest concern within the region are polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) which tend to be toxic, carcinogenic, mutagenic, or teratogenic. We assessed PAH loads in blood from adult brown pelicans and from feathers of adults and chicks of brown pelicans in relation to individual (e.g., body condition, sex) and spatial (e.g., breeding location within the Gulf, home range size, migration distance) factors. Of the 24 PAHs assessed, 17 occurred at least once among all samples. There were no PAHs found in chicks that were not also found in adults. Alkylated PAHs occurred more commonly and were measured at higher summed concentrations compared to parent PAHs in all samples, indicating that exposure to oil and/or byproducts of oil may have been a substantial source of PAH contamination for brown pelicans during this study. Within adults, PAHs were more likely to occur, and to increase in concentration, in blood samples of females compared to males, although no difference was found in feather samples. We also found that occurrence of and concentration of PAHs increased in adults that migrated longer distances. In adults and chicks, the background levels of oil and gas development within the region of the colony was not a consistent predictor of the presence of or concentration of PAHs. We also found correlations of PAHs with hematological and biochemical biomarkers that suggested compromised health. Our results indicate that both short- and long-term exposure (i.e., blood and feathers, respectively) are occurring for this species and that even nest-bound chicks can accumulate high levels of PAHs. Long-term tracking of PAHs, as well as an assessment of sublethal effects of PAHs on pelicans, could enhance our understanding of the persistence and effects of this contaminant in the northern Gulf as could increasing the breadth of species studied.
