This study's purpose is to extend our understanding of school leadership for student learning by identifying high-leverage teacher evaluation practices that improve teaching. A partnership with a state education agency administered a teacher questionnaire regarding evaluation practices multiple times in one semester, then linked teacher responses to their next within-semester observation score. Broadly, teachers reported on scoring practices, the facilitation of post-observation conferences, feedback characteristics, and post-conference supports for evaluation-informed professional learning. Fixed effect regressions effectively compare observation scores and teacher-reported evaluation practices within the same teacher or teacher-by-evaluator pairing over four months while controlling for month-to-month influences on performance. The methods remove several serious confounders plausibly affecting related estimates in prior work. The analysis identifies six high-leverage teacher-reported evaluation practices, most of which apply to post-conference practices linking evaluation to professional learning. The evidence refines the academic understanding of leadership for student learning and implies that leadership preparation and in-service programs might emphasize the six high-leverage evaluation practices to promote active use among practicing leaders. Policymakers might ensure that aspiring and in-service leaders can develop these practices and that there are strong links between teacher evaluation and professional learning systems for school leaders to use. Certain Trichoderma isolates provide biofertilizer, biocontrol, and other plant-beneficial activities while inhabiting the soil or internal plant tissue, and their use in agricultural systems can contribute to sustainable food production. It is thought that colonization of soil or internal plant tissue is fundamental for biocontrol and biofertilizer applications. Our collective analyses of prior surveys, where the tef1α sequence was almost exclusively used to identify Trichoderma species, showed that isolates from the Harzianum complex clade, the T. asperellum/T. asperelloides group, T. virens, T. hamatum, and T. atroviride were prevalent in soil and/or as endophytes. Population structure and genetic diversity based on the genetic markers tef1α, rpb2, and ITS were investigated, and new lineages with statistical bootstrap support within T. atroviride, T. asperellum, T. hamatum, and T. virens populations were found. The nearest relatives of some of these species were also revealed. Choosing isolates from among more than 500 known Trichoderma species for use in non-targeted evaluation screens for biocontrol or biofertilizer applications is time-consuming and expensive. Preferentially selecting isolates from T. atroviride, T. asperellum/T. asperelloides, T. hamatum, the T. harzianum complex clade, T. virens, and possibly nearest relatives may speed the identification of candidates for commercialization due to the demonstrated ability of these species to successfully inhabit the soil and internal plant tissue. To our knowledge, this is the first report where dominant soil and endophytic Trichoderma species were identified from past survey data and population structure and genetic diversity analyses conducted. Aim of this study was to explore the optimal training interval and times of microperimetric biofeedback training (MBFT) in maculopathies. Twenty-nine patients with maculopathies were divided into two groups: daily training (Group A) or alternate daily training (Group B). Both groups underwent 15 MBFT sessions. We compared the BCVA, reading speed, and fixation stability at baseline, after 5, 10, 15 sessions. After 15 sessions of MBFT, all visual parameters in both groups improved. There was a significant increase in BCVA after 5 sessions in both groups (P=0.016, and P<0.001 respectively), but Group A showed further improvement after 10 sessions (P<0.001). Regarding reading speed, Group A showed significant improvement from baseline after 15 sessions(P=0.020), Group B improved significantly after 5 sessions (P=0.047) and continued to improve after 10 sessions (P=0.030). Additionally, P1 and LgBCEA of Group A significantly improved after 10 sessions (P=0.001, and P=0.001 respectively), while Group B significantly improved after 5 sessions (P=0.002, and P<0.001 respectively). There was no significant difference in visual outcomes between the two groups (P>0.05) except LgBCEA (P=0.046) after 15 sessions. We concluded that the both MBFT frequencies are effective at improving vision and quality of life in patients with maculopathies. The alternate daily training group showed less time-dependent of improvement in all parameters and a greater benefit in fixation stability. Since metabolism, survival, and reproduction in hexapods are closely related to temperatures; changes in the mean and variance of temperature are major aspects of global climate change. In the typical context of biological control, understanding how predator–prey systems are impacted under thermal conditions can make pest control more effective and resilient. With this view, this study investigated temperature-mediated development and predation parameters of the predator Harmonia axyridis against the potential prey Spodoptera litura. The age-stage, two-sex life table of the predator was constructed at four temperatures (i.e. 15, 20, 25, and 30°C) by feeding on the first instar larvae of S. litura. Our results showed that the mean generation time (T) decreased but the intrinsic rate of increase (r) and the finite rate of increase (λ) increased with increased temperature. The mean duration of the total preadult stage decreased with higher temperatures. The T and r were 70.47 d and 0.0769 d−1 at 15°C; 58.41 d and 0.0958 d−1 at 20°C; 38.71 d and 0.1526 d−1 at 25°C; and 29.59 d and 0.1822 d−1 at 30°C, respectively. The highest net reproductive rate (R 0) and fecundity were obtained at 25°C. The highest λ (1.1998 d−1) and lowest T (29.59 d) were obtained at 30°C, whereas the maximum net predation rate (C 0) was at 25°C. Total population and predation rates projections were the highest at 30°C. Based on these findings, we anticipate that biological control strategies for this predator release against S. litura should be attuned to warming scenarios to achieve better biocontrol functions. In this study, the effect of exposing the adult stages of the predator Nesidiocoris tenuis (Reuter) (Hemiptera: Miridae) to cold temperatures at different times was examined. In the experiments, individuals that reached the adult stage on the same day were kept in the dark for 5, 10, and 15 days at 7, 10, and 15°C. Adults kept at low temperatures were fed three times per week with Ephestia kuehniella Zeller (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) eggs and honey water. Individuals of N. tenuis that survived after cold exposure were reared at 25°C under a 16:8 (L:D) day-night cycle. The lowest adult survival rate after cold exposure was 65.00% when held at 7°C for 15 days. The highest survival rates were 94.00% and 98.00% when stored at 7 and 10°C, respectively, for 5 days. The most extended longevity in individuals reared following cold exposure was 14.06 days at 7°C and 14.94 days at 10°C, respectively, while the shortest lifespan was 8.10 days in adults held at 15°C for 15 days. The average number of nymphs produced by adults kept at 7°C for 15 days was 322.4, while the number produced by adults kept at 15°C for 15 days was 47.6. Except for the nymphs acquired from adults held at 15°C for 15 days, the number of nymphs obtained from adults stored at other temperatures and durations did not differ statistically from the control group. In recent years, the adoption of sustainable pest management strategies has increased interest in the utilization of biopesticides, with a focus on harnessing beneficial microorganisms. Among these, lipopeptides, such as surfactins, iturins, and fengycins produced by the genus Bacillus, have gained significant attention due to their multifaceted biocontrol mechanisms and wide-ranging inhibitory effects. This review aims to address the regulation, biosynthesis, and production of three main lipopeptide families secreted by the genus Bacillus, as well as the identification and quantification analysis used to date, through the omic tools approach. The three families have been identified as key contributors to the biocontrol abilities of these bacteria, with their broad-spectrum activity making them valuable tools in integrated pest management approaches that aim to reduce reliance on chemical pesticides use while maintaining crop health and productivity. This review focuses on the question of metabolic syndrome (MS) being a complex, but essentially monophyletic, galaxy of associated diseases/disorders, or just a syndrome of related but rather independent pathologies. The human nature of MS (its exceptionality in Nature and its close interdependence with human action and evolution) is presented and discussed. The text also describes the close interdependence of its components, with special emphasis on the description of their interrelations (including their syndromic development and recruitment), as well as their consequences upon energy handling and partition. The main theories on MS's origin and development are presented in relation to hepatic steatosis, type 2 diabetes, and obesity, but encompass most of the MS components described so far. The differential effects of sex and its biological consequences are considered under the light of human social needs and evolution, which are also directly related to MS epidemiology, severity, and relations with senescence. The triggering and maintenance factors of MS are discussed, with especial emphasis on inflammation, a complex process affecting different levels of organization and which is a critical element for MS development. Inflammation is also related to the operation of connective tissue (including the adipose organ) and the widely studied and acknowledged influence of diet. The role of diet composition, including the transcendence of the anaplerotic maintenance of the Krebs cycle from dietary amino acid supply (and its timing), is developed in the context of testosterone and β-estradiol control of the insulin-glycaemia hepatic core system of carbohydrate-triacylglycerol energy handling. The high probability of MS acting as a unique complex biological control system (essentially monophyletic) is presented, together with additional perspectives/considerations on the treatment of this 'very' human disease. Temporal gait asymmetry (TGA) is commonly observed in individuals facing mobility challenges. Rhythmic auditory stimulation (RAS) can improve temporal gait parameters by promoting synchronization with external cues. While biofeedback for gait training, providing real-time feedback based on specific gait parameters measured, has been proven to successfully elicit changes in gait patterns, RAS-based biofeedback as a treatment for TGA has not been explored. In this study, a wearable RAS-based biofeedback gait training system was developed to measure temporal gait symmetry in real time and deliver RAS accordingly. Three different RAS-based biofeedback strategies were compared: open- and closed-loop RAS at constant and variable target levels. The main objective was to assess the ability of the system to induce TGA with able-bodied (AB) participants and evaluate and compare each strategy. With all three strategies, temporal symmetry was significantly altered compared to the baseline, with the closed-loop strategy yielding the most significant changes when comparing at different target levels. Speed and cadence remained largely unchanged during RAS-based biofeedback gait training. Setting the metronome to a target beyond the intended target may potentially bring the individual closer to their symmetry target. The application of bacteriophages to control foodborne bacterial pathogens in foods has gained traction in recent years. Poultry meat is a major source of Campylobacter jejuni, and a target for the application of bacteriophages. To offer the prospect of a post-harvest control measure, the bacteriophage must function at refrigeration temperatures, where C. jejuni does not grow but can survive. Here, we report actions of three classes of Campylobacter bacteriophage at 4 °C. The pre-incubation of broth cultures at 4 °C before a shift to 42 °C under conditions that support the growth of the host bacteria revealed differences in the time to lysis compared with cultures incubated at 42 °C. The pre-adsorption of the bacteriophage to a sub-population of bacteria is consistent with the observation of asynchronous infection. To ascertain whether the bacteriophages adsorb and infect (the commitment to replicate), we investigated bacteriophage transcription at 4 °C. RNA transcripts for all the bacteriophage host combinations were detected after 15 min, indicating that the interaction is not merely passive. Bacteriophages can infect C. jejuni at refrigeration temperatures, but the infection does not proceed to lysis in the absence of host cell division. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Bacterial endosymbionts, in genera Wolbachia and Cardinium, infect various arthropods and some nematode groups. Manipulating these microbial symbionts presents a promising biocontrol strategy for managing disease-causing parasites. However, the diversity of Wolbachia and Cardinium in nematodes remains unclear. This study employed a genome skimming strategy to uncover their occurrence in plant-parasitic nematodes, analyzing 52 populations of 12 species. A metagenome analysis revealed varying endosymbiont genome content, leading to the categorization of strong, weak, and no evidence for endosymbiont genomes. Strong evidence for Wolbachia was found in five populations, and for Cardinium in one population, suggesting a limited occurrence. Strong Wolbachia evidence was noted in Pratylenchus penetrans and Radopholus similis from North/South America and Africa. Heterodera glycines from North America showed strong Cardinium evidence. Weak genomic evidence for Wolbachia was observed in Globodera pallida, Meloidogyne incognita, Rotylenchus reniformis, Pratylechus coffeae, Pratylenchus neglectus, and Pratylenchus thornei; for Cardinium was found in G. pallida, R. reniformis and P. neglectus; 27/52 populations exhibited no endosymbiont evidence. Wolbachia and Cardinium presence varied within nematode species, suggesting non-obligate mutualism. Wolbachia and Cardinium genomes differed among nematode species, indicating potential species-specific functionality. Context: Ankle positioning gait biofeedback (GBF) has improved ankle inversion for patients with chronic ankle instability. However, the effects on proximal deficits remain unknown. The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of impairment-based rehabilitation with GBF and without biofeedback on gluteal activity during walking in patients with chronic ankle instability. Design: Randomized controlled trial. Methods: Eighteen patients with chronic ankle instability (14 women and 4 men; age 22 [4] y; height 171 [10] cm; mass 71.6 [13.8] kg) were recruited from a university setting, following International Ankle Consortium guidelines. Patients were randomly allocated to GBF or without biofeedback groups (N = 9 per group). Both groups performed 4 weeks of exercises and treadmill walking. The GBF group alone received feedback on frontal ankle positioning at initial contact during walking. Ultrasound videos of the gluteus maximus and medius were recorded during walking at baseline and follow-up by a blinded clinician. Gluteal activity ratios were obtained at each 10% of the gait cycle. Statistical parametric mapping repeated-measures analysis of variance were used to compare groups and time points. Results: Both groups demonstrated significantly increased gluteus medius activity across the gait cycle compared with baseline (P < .01, mean differences: 0.13-0.21, Hedge g: 0.97-1.89); however, there were no significant between-group differences. There were no statistically significant changes noted for the gluteus maximus. No adverse events were observed. Conclusions: Impairment- based rehabilitation led to increased gluteus medius activity, but GBF did not provide any additional improvement to this parameter. Context: Running is a popular sport globally. Previous studies have used a gait retraining program to successfully lower impact loading, which has been associated with lower injury rates in recreational runners. However, there is an absence of studies on the effect of this training program on the plantar pressure distribution pattern during running. Objective: To investigate the short-term effect of a gait retraining strategy that uses visual biofeedback on the plantar pressure distribution pattern and foot posture in recreational runners. Design: Randomized controlled trial. Setting: Biomechanics laboratory. Participants: Twenty-four recreational runners were evaluated (n= 12 gait retraining group and n= 12 control group). Intervention: Those in the gait retraining group underwent a 2-week program (4 sessions/wk, 30 min/session, and 8 sessions). The participants in the control group were also invited to the laboratory (8 times in 2 wk), but no feedback on their running biomechanics was provided. Main Outcome Measures: The primary outcome measures were plantar pressure distribution and plantar arch index using a pressure platform. The secondary outcome measure was the foot posture index. Results: The gait retraining program with visual biofeedback was effective in reducing medial and lateral rearfoot plantar pressure after intervention and when compared with the control group. In the static condition, the pressure peak and maximum force on the forefoot and midfoot were reduced, and arch index was increased after intervention. After static training intervention, the foot posture index showed a decrease in the foot pronation. Conclusions: A 2-week gait retraining program with visual biofeedback was effective in lowering rearfoot plantar pressure, favoring better support of the arch index in recreational runners. In addition, static training was effective in reducing foot pronation. Most importantly, these observations will help healthcare professionals understand the importance of a gait retraining program with visual biofeedback to improve plantar loading and pronation during rehabilitation. Context: Asymmetrical movements of trunk and lower-extremity are common during the bridge exercise on the unstable condition. However, no studies have investigated whether visual biofeedback of pressing pressure on the unstable surface changes muscle activation patterns of trunk and hip extensors and pelvic rotation during the bridge exercise. Objective: To investigate how visual biofeedback of pressing pressure influences symmetrical activity of lumbar and hip extensor and pelvic rotation. Design: Cross-sectional study. Setting: Laboratory. Participants: Twenty healthy males participated in this study. Interventions: The participants performed 2 versions of the bridge exercise: the standard bridge exercise and the bridge exercise with visual biofeedback using amount of pressing pressure on the sling. Main Outcome Measures: Surface electromyography was used to measure the symmetry (ie, the difference between dominant and nondominant sides) of muscle activation in the bilateral erector spinae, gluteus maximus, and hamstring muscles, and motion sensors were used to assess pelvic rotation. Symmetry of pressing pressure was measured using a tension meter. Results: The differences between the dominant and nondominant pressing pressures and differences between the electromyography activity of the dominant and nondominant erector spinae, gluteus maximus, and hamstring were significantly smaller during the bridge exercise with visual biofeedback than during the standard bridge exercise (P <.05). In addition, there was significantly less pelvic rotation during the bridge exercise with visual biofeedback than during the standard bridge exercise (P <.05). Conclusions: The present findings suggest that visual biofeedback strategy may be a useful method for enhancing the symmetrical activation of the erector spinae, gluteus maximus, and hamstring and for reducing pelvic rotation during the bridge exercise on the unstable surface. This study aimed to investigate and compare the performance, perceptual and reaction skills and neuromuscular control indicators of sub-elite (SEG) and elite (EG) karate athletes during the execution of a Gyaku Tsuki punch. The study included 14 male athletes, equally divided into two subgroups according to their current competitive level. We analyzed the peak and mean linear velocity of the wrist, linear peak acceleration/deceleration of the wrist, braking time, pre-motor time, motor time, reaction time, movement time and co-contraction index between selected muscle groups. EG athletes presented higher values in almost all performance variables, with the exception of the mean linear velocity of the wrist, which was similar between the groups. In the perceptual and reaction skills, the EG athletes presented shorter time durations with the exception of the pre-motor time, which did not reveal significant differences. The only significant difference in the indicators of neuromuscular control were found during the deceleration phase, where the EG athletes presented a higher co-contraction index between the biceps brachii and the triceps brachii. In conclusion, the EG athletes, in addition to being faster to react, faster to accelerate the wrist, could perform the braking in less time than the SEG athletes, making the technique less perceptible to the opponent. Purpose: To investigate the effect of Tiaoxie Yizhi Formula combined with atomoxetine and biofeedback therapy on the Swanson, Nolan, and Pelham-IV Rating Scale (SNAP-IV) score as well as Clinical Global Impression (CGI) score of school-age children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Methods: Clinical data of 85 school-age children with ADHD who were admitted to Dushu Lake Hospital from April 2019 to June 2022 were analyzed retrospectively. Patients treated with biofeedback therapy and atomoxetine for 1 month were defined as control group (n = 42), while those treated with Tiaoxie Yizhi Formula in addition to what was given control group were defined as study group (n = 43). Efficacy, Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) symptom scores, SNAP-IV score, CGI score and cerebral electrophysiological indices were compared between the groups. The scores of the main and secondary syndromes were also compared between two groups. Results: Treatment response rate in study group was significantly higher than in control group (p < 0.05). There was no significant difference in scores of the main syndromes and secondary syndromes, SNAP-IV score or CGI score between the two groups before treatment (p > 0.05). However, scores of the two groups decreased significantly after treatment, and study group had significantly lower scores than control group (p < 0.05). There was no significant difference in sensorimotor rhythms (SMR) waves, ß waves, or, waves between the two groups before and after treatment (p > 0.05). Conclusion: Tiaoxie Yizhi Formula plus atomoxetine plus biofeedback therapy improves ADHD symptoms more than biofeedback therapy and atomoxetine combination as shown by the reduction in TCM, SNAP-IV and CGI scores. Background: The coconut black-headed caterpillar, Opisina arenosella Walker (Lepidoptera: Xyloryctidae) has been a serious defoliator of coconut plants in many coconut producing countries including Vietnam. Trichospilus pupivorus Ferrière (Hymenoptera: Eulophidae) is pupal endo-parasitoid of O. arenosella with high percent parasitism and abundance in the coconut fields and appears to be a good biological control agent against the coconut black-headed caterpillar in Vietnam. The objective of this study was to investigate the developmental biology of T. pupivorus on O. arenosella. Methods: The experiment was carried out at the Faculty of Agronomy, Nong Lam University, Viet Nam during 2020 and 2021. The developmental biology of T. pupivorus on O. arenosella was studied in the laboratory at a constant temperature of 28°C and a photoperiod of 12L: 8D. Result: Total developmental time from egg to adult emergence was 14.0 days. The females laid a mean of 124.2 eggs during an average lifespan of 9.4 days. The number of progenies emergence from a single pupa of O. arenosella was 103.8. The offspring sex ratio was female-biased (8.0%). The results would contribute to the knowledge of the biology of this parasitoid to optimize a mass rearing system for a biological control program against O. arenosella. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Context: Lumbar instability can cause lumbar spondylolisthesis and chronic low-back pain in sports situation. Abdominal hollowing is commonly used in clinical practice to preferentially target the transversus abdominis (TrA) to stabilize the lumbar vertebrae; however, the contribution of muscle elasticity and lateral slide of the TrA to lumbar stability has not yet been clarified. Objective: To clarify the contribution of elasticity and lateral slide of the TrA to lumbar stability and to identify an effective exercise to stabilize the lumbar vertebrae. Design: Experimental study. Setting: Laboratory. Patients: A total of 29 healthy males participated in this study. Interventions: The participants performed hollowing during measurement of muscle elasticity of TrA and both knees extension from crook lying position for pelvic stability measurement. Main Outcome Measures: Lumbar stability, muscle elasticity change ratio, and lateral slide amount of TrA. Results: There was a significant correlation between elasticity of the TrA and lumbar stability; however, no relationship was observed between lateral slide and lumbar stability or elasticity of the TrA. Conclusion: Elasticity of the TrA and lumbar stability was significantly correlated; therefore, improving the tonicity of the TrA may stabilize the lumbar vertebrae in healthy individuals. Moreover, hollowing with maximum effort may be effective as training aimed to stabilize the lumbar vertebrae for physical dysfunction due to lumbar instability. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Simple Summary: Harmonia axyridis (Pallas) (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) is a natural predatory enemy insect widely distributed in north China and has been widely used in agricultural practice. Owing to a low daily average temperature from December to February of the following year in greenhouses and the facultative diapause of adult H. axyridis, the application of this ladybird in greenhouses in north China is limited. It is of great importance to regulate its predatory ability to improve its biological control efficiency in greenhouses. The 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) was found to play a regulatory role in the predation of H. axyridis in our previous study, but the 5-HT receptor of H. axyridis has not been clearly identified so far, and its expression characteristics are poorly understood. In this study, the 5-HT receptor gene of H. axyridis was cloned and identified by phylogenetic tree construction and multiple sequence alignments. The expression patterns of each receptor in different developmental stages and tissues were analyzed by quantitative real-time PCR (qRT-PCR). The results showed that H. axyridis expressed four 5-HT receptor subtypes, named 5-HT1AHar, 5-HT1BHar, 5-HT2Har, and 5-HT7Har. All 4 receptors were expressed at high levels in the adult stage, especially in 2-day-old adults, with expression levels of 18.72-fold (male) and 14.21-fold (female) of that in eggs for 5-HT1AHar, 32.27-fold (male) and 83.58-fold (female) of that in eggs for 5-HT1BHar, 36.82-fold (male) and 119.35-fold (female) of that in eggs for 5-HT2Har, and 165.47-fold (male) and 115.59-fold (female) of that in eggs for 5-HT7Har. The level of expression for each receptor gene decreased with the advance of day-age in adults. The levels of expression of 5-HT1BHar, 5-HT2Har, and 5-HT7Har were low at the egg, larval, and pupal stages, and 5-HT1AHar was not expressed in the larval stage. The four receptors were expressed in the nervous system, digestive tract, pectoral muscles, and male and female gonads of adults. The 5-HT1AHar was expressed at a high level in the pectoral muscle (6.75-fold of that in the nervous system), 5-HT1BHar in male gonads (1.02-fold of that in the nervous system) and the nervous system, 5-HT2Har in male gonads (5.74-fold of that in the nervous system), and 5-HT7Har in the digestive tract (1.81-fold of that in the nervous system). The results of this study will lay a foundation for research on the function of the 5-HT receptor by RNA interference in the regulation of predation by H. axyridis. It has been found that 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) modulates the feeding of some insects, and this phenomenon was found in Harmonia axyridis (Pallas) by our previous study. An understanding of the 5-HT system in this beetle is helpful for utilizing 5-HT to modulate its predation to improve biological control efficiency, especially in greenhouses in winter in north China. This is because 5-HT influences diapause in insects by modulating the synthesis and release of prothoracic hormone (PTTH) and, therefore, influences feeding. To elucidate the molecular basis of the H. axyridis 5-HT system, reverse-transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR), multiple sequence alignment, and phylogenetic tree construction were used to identify the 5-HT receptor in H. axyridis, and quantitative real-time PCR (qRT-PCR) was used to analyze the expression pattern of these receptor genes in different developmental stages and in the nervous system (brain + ventral nerve cord), digestive tract, pectoral muscles, and gonads of the adult ladybird. The results showed that four 5-HT receptors were identified in H. axyridis, named 5-HT1AHar, 5-HT1BHar, 5-HT2Har, and 5-HT7Har. The four receptors were expressed at high levels in the adult stage, especially in 2-day-old adults, with expression levels of 18.72-fold (male) and 14.21-fold (female) of that in eggs for 5-HT1A, 32.27-fold (male) and 83.58-fold (female) of that in eggs for 5-HT1B, 36.82-fold (male) and 119.35-fold (female) of that in eggs for 5-HT2, and 165.47-fold (male) and 115.59-fold (female) of that in eggs for 5-HT7. The level of expression decreased with the advance of day-age in adults. The levels of expression of 5-HT1BHar, 5-HT2Har, and 5-HT7Har were low at the egg, larval, and pupal stages, and 5-HT1AHar was not expressed in the larval stage. The four receptors were expressed in the nervous system, digestive tract, pectoral muscles, and male and female gonads. The 5-HT1AHar was expressed at a high level in the pectoral muscle (6.75-fold of that in the nervous system), 5-HT1BHar in male gonads (1.02-fold of that in the nervous system) and the nervous system, 5-HT2Har in male gonads (5.74-fold of that in the nervous system), and 5-HT7Har in the digestive tract (1.81-fold of that in the nervous system). Biofeedback is among the various self-regulation techniques that mental performance consultants can utilize in their practice with athletes. Biofeedback produces psychophysiological assessments in real time to enhance awareness of thoughts and emotions. Quantitatively, research shows that biofeedback can facilitate self-regulation, allowing an athlete to gain control over psychophysiological responses that could be detrimental to performance. With technology becoming a widespread tool in monitoring psychophysiological states, an exploration of consultants' use of biofeedback, their perceptions of effectiveness, and limitations of their use was warranted to qualitatively evaluate efficiency of the tool. A qualitative descriptive approach was taken through semistructured interviews with 10 mental performance consultants. Inductive reasoning uncovered three themes: positive implications, practical limitations, and equipment options. With biofeedback, athletes have the ability to develop a deeper level of self-awareness and thereby facilitate the use of self-regulation strategies intended for optimal performance states and outcomes. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of a sensorimotor rhythm (SMR) neurofeedback training (NFT) and biofeedback training (BFT) intervention on ice hockey shooting performance. Specifically, the purpose was to examine (a) whether an NFT/BFT program could improve ice hockey shooting performance, (b) whether the implementation of an SMR-NFT intervention leads to neurological adaptations during performance, and (c) whether such neurological changes account for improvement in shooting performance. Using a longitudinal stratified random control design, results demonstrated that while both SMR-NFT/BFT and control groups improved performance, the rate of improvement for the SMR-NFT/BFT group was significantly higher than the control. Participants in the SMR-NFT/BFT group demonstrated the ability to significantly increase SMR power from pre- to postintervention in the lab. However, no significant changes in SMR power were found during shooting performance. This result may be suggestive of differing cortical activity present during motor-skill preparation. Context: Existing anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury prevention programs have failed to reverse the high rate of ACL injuries in adolescent female athletes. Objective: This investigation attempts to overcome factors that limit efficacy with existing injury prevention programs through the use of a novel, objective, and real-time interactive visual feedback system designed to reduce the biomechanical risk factors associated with ACL injuries. Design: Cross-over study. Setting: Medical center laboratory. Participants: A total of 20 females (age = 19.7 [1.34] y; height = 1.74 [0.09] m; weight = 72.16 [12.45] kg) participated in this study. Methods: Participants performed sets of 10 bodyweight squats in each of 8 training blocks (ie, 4 real-time and 4 control blocks) and 3 testing blocks for a total of 110 squats. Feedback conditions were blocked and counterbalanced with half of participants randomly assigned to receive the real-time feedback block first and half receiving the control (sham) feedback first. Results: Heat map analysis revealed that during interaction with the real-time feedback, squat performance measured in terms of key biomechanical parameters was improved compared with performance when participants squatted with the sham stimulus. Conclusions: This study demonstrates that the interactive feedback system guided participants to significantly improve movement biomechanics during performance of a body weight squat, which is a fundamental exercise for a longer term ACL injury risk reduction intervention. A longer training and testing period is necessary to investigate the efficacy of this feedback approach to effect long-term adaptations in the biomechanical risk profile of athletes. A group of Fusarium spp., in the Fusarium oxysporum species complex is known as pathogens on bananas, i.e., Fusarium wilt or Panama Disease. However, many Fusarium spp. are also known to be endophytes inside healthy banana plants and have been less explored and investigated. Fusarium endophytes have been demonstrated to be effective against the Fusarium pathogen that causes wilting in some crops such as tomatoes and watermelon. Thus, we explored endophytes Fusarium from local bananas in Pandenglang Banten for further use as biocontrol of Fusarium wilt. Four wild banana accessions were identified, from which 9 Fusarium isolates recovered from its pseudostems asymptomatic plants. All isolates were characterized based on their morphological characters and sequence of the Internal Transcribed Spacer (ITS) gene. These isolates belong to four complexes of Fusarium i.e. Fusarium equiseti species complex, Fusarium oxysporum species complex, Fusarium sambucinum species complex, and Fusarium solani species complex (currently described as Neocosmospora). Further study on molecular characterization of these isolates using specific genes and their potential antagonists of pathogens still needs to be discovered for other use as a biocontrol against Fusarium wilt. Background: Paretic propulsion [measured as anteriorly-directed ground reaction forces (AGRF)] and trailing limb angle (TLA) show robust inter-relationships, and represent two key modifiable post-stroke gait variables that have biomechanical and clinical relevance. Our recent work demonstrated that real-time biofeedback is a feasible paradigm for modulating AGRF and TLA in able-bodied participants. However, the effects of TLA biofeedback on gait biomechanics of post-stroke individuals are poorly understood. Thus, our objective was to investigate the effects of unilateral, real-time, audiovisual TLA versus AGRF biofeedback on gait biomechanics in post-stroke individuals. Methods: Nine post-stroke individuals (6 males, age 63 ± 9.8 years, 44.9 months post-stroke) participated in a single session of gait analysis comprised of three types of walking trials: no biofeedback, AGRF biofeedback, and TLA biofeedback. Biofeedback unilaterally targeted deficits on the paretic limb. Dependent variables included peak AGRF, TLA, and ankle plantarflexor moment. One-way repeated measures ANOVA with Bonferroni-corrected post-hoc comparisons were conducted to detect the effect of biofeedback on gait biomechanics variables. Results: Compared to no-biofeedback, both AGRF and TLA biofeedback induced unilateral increases in paretic AGRF. TLA biofeedback induced significantly larger increases in paretic TLA than AGRF biofeedback. AGRF biofeedback increased ankle moment, and both feedback conditions increased non-paretic step length. Both types of biofeedback specifically targeted the paretic limb without inducing changes in the non-paretic limb. Conclusions: By showing comparable increases in paretic limb gait biomechanics in response to both TLA and AGRF biofeedback, our novel findings provide the rationale and feasibility of paretic TLA as a gait biofeedback target for post-stroke individuals. Additionally, our results provide preliminary insights into divergent biomechanical mechanisms underlying improvements in post-stroke gait induced by these two biofeedback targets. The neurophysiological mechanisms of chronic ankle instability (CAI) remain unclear, as evidence supports both feed-forward and feed-back neuromuscular control mechanisms. Assessing gait initiation under different conditions could provide insights into both mechanistic pathways. The primary objective of this study was to investigate changes in neuromuscular control of self-generated and triggered gait initiation in different directions in patients with chronic ankle instability. Twenty-five CAI patients and 25 healthy volunteers participated. The participants were asked to initiate gait with maximum speed under two conditions; self-generated (when they felt ready after hearing an "all set" signal) and triggered (immediately upon hearing an acoustic signal) in three different directions: straight ahead (0°), clockwise (30°), and counter-clockwise (30°). Duration of reaction and postural phases of gait initiation were assessed. A more prolonged reaction phase (P = 0.003) and shorter postural phase of gait initiation (P = 0.012) were noted in the CAI group compared with the healthy individuals in both self-generated and triggered conditions. A shorter postural phase in the CAI group was also noted during the self-generated condition's 30° counter-clockwise direction (P ≤ 0.005). Postural phase alterations in CAI patients during both self-generated and triggered gait initiation suggest that both feed-forward and feed-back neuromuscular control are altered and may present a potential neurophysiologic mechanism of CAI. In the face of climate change, the point of view of existing agricultural production systems is changing, and biological issues are gaining importance in terms of sustainable agriculture. Environmentally friendly biological solutions come to the forefront in the management of diseases and pests that put pressure on sustainable agriculture. It has been proven by many studies that plant growth promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) have positive effects on plant growth, as well as reduce or prevent viral diseases. However, determining the targeted virus species, the PGPR strains used, or the plant strains tested requires a serious literature review and reading. In this study, which can be considered as a preliminary study, a database of PGPR and plant virus relations literature was created in a dynamic infrastructure that can be constantly updated, and a web interface was developed as an R/shiny application. Thanks to this preliminary study, which has examples in different fields, it is thought that it is possible for researchers to quickly access the literature on the subject, plan costeffective projects, and identify the missing or potential points of the subject. According to the information in the database, it was determined that CMV was the most targeted virus, different strains of Bacillus and Pseudomonas genera were used the most as PGPR agent, tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) and cucumber (Cucumis sativus) were the most tested plant species, and single applications were tested more. It is thought that this and similar studies will enable researchers to gain a quick perspective on the subject, facilitate the management of the information they have acquired, and contribute to effective planning in their new studies. One of the most popular and widely consumed drinks in the world is beer, also one of the oldest in the human mankind. The consummation of the drink has deep historical roots and there are many traditions, especially in Europe such as beer festivals, beer-oriented tourism, and beer drinking games. Although beer is extremely popular in human society, it actually can act as a pesticide - more specifically as a molluscicide approved by the European Commission as a basic substance in 2017 to be used as a molluscicide in traps. In this study the insecticidal effects of popular brands of light beer type „lager" in Bulgaria: „Pirinsko Svetlo”, „Zagorka”, „Astika” and „Kamenitza” with alcohol content: 4.3% (v/v), 5% (v/v), 4.5% (v/v) and 4.4% (v/v) were investigated towards different aphid species. The beer was tested in the original form and with dilution with water: 90%, 80%, 70%, 50%, etc. The conducted trials prove that beer without any dilution can be 100% effective against aphid species: Aphis rosae, Aphis pomi, Myzus cerasi, Aphis nerii, Aphis gossypii. Mortality rate after 24 hours was 100% for all aphid species and all used in the tests beer trade marks were able to achieve this. There were no significant differences (p>0.05) between results received from tests with different aphid species and from different beer trademarks. In this aspect, the cheapest beer available on the local market can provide a safe, low cost, environmental and effective way of pest management in the small gardens, urban agriculture or plants in public spaces like airports, stations, offices, etc. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The desirable characteristics of effective natural enemies and the causes for failure of biological control efforts have been discussed extensively in the literature, yet predicting which collection site may yield efficient natural enemies remains a challenge. Insect characteristics, such as morphology, physiology, life history and behavior, often vary across geographic cline and location. These variations may reflect phenotypic plasticity across environments, or genetically based local (demic) adaptation. Parameters such as body size, photoperiod response, thermal tolerance and genetic diversity may greatly influence the outcome of biological control efforts. Therefore, geographic variation in such characteristics may be used to optimize the collection site of efficient enemies to be employed in biological control programs. The first step towards this goal is compilation of data on the trait diversity of promising natural enemies across their geographic distribution range. For example, we used published information to compile a database on the geographic distribution of various traits of 92 Orius species (Heteroptera: Anthocoridae), a genus known for its potential contribution to biological control in IPM systems. We discuss how the widespread distribution of this genus in different ecozones should enable the collection of species and populations that differ in various geographically dependent traits relevant to biological control. Finally, we suggest a quantitative method to optimize collection efforts of natural enemies. This approach balances the effects of several natural enemy traits that vary geographically. Hailed as one of the most outstanding dystopian novels, the novel provides precise delineations of a racist and totalitarian regime, the World State, characterized by the advanced biotechnology, overpowering hedonism as well as deliberately devised emotional numbness. It is obvious that life, especially the biological existence of people, becomes not only the cornerstone but also the prey of politics-biopolitics. Michel Foucault's term, biopolitics, is the basis of the biopolitical frame, within which, Brave New World is closely examined in this paper. The novel reflects a biopolitical aim which is to shelter and improve life through the biological regulation with advanced bio-science as well as biotechnology. Signal transduction systems are the key players of bacterial adaptation and survival. The orthodox two-component signal transduction systems perceive diverse environmental stimuli and their regulatory response leads to cellular changes. Although rarely described, the unorthodox three-component systems are also implemented in the regulation of major bacterial behavior such as the virulence of clinically relevant pathogen P. aeruginosa. Previously, we described a novel three-component system in P. capeferrum WCS358 (RclSAR) where the sensor kinase RclS stimulates the intI1 transcription in stationary growth phase. In this study, using rclS knock-out mutant, we identified RclSAR regulon in P. capeferrum WCS358. The RNA sequencing revealed that activity of RclSAR signal transduction system is growth phase dependent with more pronounced regulatory potential in early stages of growth. Transcriptional analysis emphasized the role of RclSAR in global regulation and indicated the involvement of this system in regulation of diverse cellular activities such as RNA binding and metabolic and biocontrol processes. Importantly, phenotypic comparison of WCS358 wild type and ΔrclS mutant showed that RclS sensor kinase contributes to modulation of antibiotic resistance, production of AHLs and siderophore as well as host cell adherence and cytotoxicity. Here, we discuss the role of plant defenses in retaining natural enemy communities by influencing the quality of herbivorous pests as prey for their natural enemies. These bottom-up effects of host-plant defenses on prey quality are often overlooked in the development of pest management strategies. Argentina hosted pioneering classical weed biological control projects that were carried out by state institutions between the 1970s and 1990s, at a time when the practice was almost unheard of in Latin America. Despite the early development of these initiatives, the discipline did not prosper and all projects were discontinued. Notwithstanding, Argentina continued to provide biological control agents for the control of weeds in many other parts of the world, ensuring the expertise persisted. Although public concern about invasive plants and chemical-dependent agricultural practices has increased over time, it did not lead to a greater acceptance of classical biological control of weeds, which is still regarded with mistrust or ignored in many public and academic circles alike. Furthermore, there are no systems in place to reach a consensus on declaring weeds as targets for biological control in Argentina. In this paper we discuss different ways in which the community of researchers working in the field in Argentina can help relaunch the biological control of weeds, including the preparation of a prioritized list of target species. A list of this kind would not only reduce costs, but also help in developing trust in the discipline of biological control informing regulators and decision makers in this regard. Prospects are brighter today than a few years ago, but considerable communication and educational work on the benefits of this practice is still required to gain more support before it can effectively be re-implemented. The sports landscape is constantly changing due to innovation and entrepreneurship. The availability of technology led to the emergence of esports and augmented sports. Biofeedback and sensing technologies can be used for athlete monitoring and training purposes. Research on motor control deals with planning and execution of bodily movements and provides some insights towards formal presentation of sports. Previous research provided many sports categorization models. On many occasions, published articles did not distinguish competitive gameplay activities (gaming) from athletic performance (esports). Our goal was to define esports by extending existing universal sport definitions and propose a novel modular computational framework for categorizing sports through environments and signals. We have fulfilled our goals by illustrating how signals flow within competitive (sports) environments. Our esports definition introduces esports as a group of sports similar to motorsports. Moreover, we have defined mathematical foundations for signal processing by various actors (athletes, referees, environments, intermediate processing steps). We have demonstrated that representing sports as a multidimensional signal can lead to the categorization of sports through computation. We claim that our approach could be applied to transfer training methods from similar sports, analysis of the training process, and referee error measurement. Our study was not without limitations. Further research is required to validate our theoretical model by embedding available variables in latent space to calculate similarity measures between sports. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Invasive plants threaten biodiversity worldwide, but control of non-native species may affect native species in complex ways. Non-native tamarisk (Tamarix spp.) is widespread in western U.S. riparian environments, and tamarisk beetles (Diorhabda spp.), a tamarisk-specific herbivore, were subsequently introduced as biocontrol. The primary effect of biocontrol is defoliation and branch dieback, with repeated defoliation killing the plant. We investigated the initial stages of site recovery after biocontrol and how tamarisk decline affected birds, their arthropod prey, and microclimate. We compared avian community diversity and composition, arthropod abundance, humidity, and temperature at sites along the Virgin River in Nevada and Arizona, USA characterized as either mixed native vegetation, tamarisk-dominated, or tamarisk-dominated where the majority of tamarisk died from biocontrol. We compared avian communities sampled after biocontrol to counts at the same locations before biocontrol. Prior to biocontrol, community compositions of all but one site grouped together using unbiased clustering algorithms. Following biocontrol, tamarisk-dominated sites grouped separately, and mixed sites grouped with the pre-biocontrol cluster. Comparison of pre- and post-biocontrol communities showed 7 common species declined by =30% in dead tamarisk sites, while one species did so at mixed sites and 3 at tamarisk-dominated sites. Individual census points in dead tamarisk had significantly lower Simpson diversity than the same points censused before biocontrol, unless native vegetation was present, suggesting tamarisk death was the cause of dominant species abundance changes. Tamarisk-dominated sites were hotter and drier than sites with native vegetation and supported fewer non-tamarisk-obligate arthropods, consistent with the hypothesis that bird reductions were driven by changes in microclimate and prey abundance. How long these effects last will depend upon the rate of native vegetation recovery after biocontrol, therefore we recommend monitoring sites to determine the trajectory of vegetative recovery and considering the need and feasibility of active restoration in those sites with slow or no native regeneration. Algicidal bacteria have been frequently isolated from algal blooming areas. However, knowledge regarding the microbial communities coexisting with microalgae and their potential application in preventing harmful algal blooms (HABs) is limited. In this study, we investigated the composition of the microbial community coexisting with harmful alga Karenia mikimotoi and its responses to algal control via nutrient stimulation or by adding algicidal strain in microcosms. The microorganisms inhabiting the K. mikimotoi culture consisted of 24 identified phyla, including dominant Proteobacteria (relative abundance 76.24%±7.28%) and Bacteroidetes (22.67%±8.32%). Rhodobacteraceae, Phaeodactylibacter, and Maritimibacter predominated during the algal cultivation. Both the added nutrient and fermentation broth of algicidal strain Pseudoalteromonas QF1 caused a massive death of K. mikimotoi and substantial changes in the coexisting microbial community, in which Rhodobacteraceae and Phaeodactylibacter significantly decreased, while Halomonas and Alteromonas increased. Core operational taxonomic units (OTUs) analysis indicated that 13 OTUs belonging to Rhodobacteraceae, Maritimibacter, Marivita, Nisaea, Phaeodactylibacter, Citreicella, Halomonas, Alteromonas, Marinobacter, Muricauda, and Pseudoalteromonas dominated the changes of the microbial communities observed in the K. mikimotoi culture with or without treatments. Collectively, this study indicated that microbial community inhabiting K. mikimotoi culture includes potential algicidal bacteria, and improves our knowledge about microbial community succession during biocontrol of K. mikimotoi via nutrient stimulation or by adding isolated algicidal strains. A water supply system is considered an essential service to the population as it is about providing an essential good for life. This system typically consists of several sensors, transducers, pumps, etc., and some of these elements have high costs and/or complex installation. The indirect measurement of a quantity can be used to obtain a desired variable, dispensing with the use of a specific sensor in the plant. Among the contributions of this technique is the design of the pressure controller using the adaptive control, as well as the use of an artificial neural network for the construction of nonlinear models using inherent system parameters such as pressure, engine rotation frequency and control valve angle, with the purpose of estimating the flow. Among the various contributions of the research, we can highlight the suppression in the acquisition of physical flow meters, the elimination of physical installation and others. The validation was carried out through tests in an experimental bench located in the Laboratory of Energy and Hydraulic Efficiency in Sanitation of the Federal University of Paraiba. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of abdominal muscle activity on postural control in patients with postmenopausal osteoporosis. Materials and Methods: Fifty-six postmenopausal osteoporosis patients with a fear of falling were included. Postural stability of the participants was evaluated with timed up and go test (TUG), Berg balance scale (BBS), and static balance index (SBI). Abdominal muscle activities were evaluated using a pressure biofeedback unit involving the performance of an abdominal drawing-in maneuver and posterior pelvic tilt movement. According to the postural stability test scores, the participants were divided into subgroups as high fall risk and low fall risk. Results: Twenty (35.7%) patients according to the TUG, 24 (42.8%) patients according to BBS, 18 (32.1%) patients according to SBI had a high risk of falling. In all subgroups analyzes, patients with a high risk of falling had more fall history (p=0.007, p<0.001, p<0.001, respectively), less pelvic tilt movement activity (p<0.001, both), and abdominal draw-in muscle activity (p<0.001, p=0.009, p<0.001, respectively). Conclusion: Patients with postmenopausal osteoporosis who have a high risk of falling have low abdominal muscle activities. While rehabilitating these patients might be performed core stabilization exercises that can increase the activation of the abdominal muscle activities. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Running retraining with the use of biofeedback on an impact measure has been executed or evaluated in the biomechanics laboratory. Here, the execution and evaluation of feedback-driven retraining are taken out of the laboratory. Purpose: To determine whether biofeedback can reduce the peak tibial acceleration with or without affecting the running cadence in a 3-week retraining protocol. Study Design: Quasi-randomized controlled trial. Methods: Twenty runners with high peak tibial acceleration were allocated to either the retraining (n = 10, 32.1 ± 7.8 years, 10.9 ± 2.8 g) or control (n = 10, 39.1 ± 10.4 years, 13.0 ± 3.9 g) groups. They performed six running sessions in an athletic training environment. A body-worn system collected axial tibial acceleration and provided real-time feedback. The retraining group received music-based biofeedback in a faded feedback scheme. Pink noise was superimposed on tempo-synchronized music when the peak tibial acceleration was ≥70% of the runner's baseline. The control group received tempo-synchronized music, which acted as a placebo for blinding purposes. Speed feedback was provided to obtain a stable running speed of ~2.9 m·s−1. Peak tibial acceleration and running cadence were evaluated. Results: A significant group-by- feedback interaction effect was detected for peak tibial acceleration. The experimental group had a decrease in peak tibial acceleration by 25.5% (mean: 10.9 ± 2.8 g versus 8.1 ± 3.9 g, p = 0.008, d = 1.08, mean difference = 2.77 [0.94, 4.61]) without changing the running cadence. The control group had no statistically significant change in peak tibial acceleration nor in running cadence. Conclusion: The retraining protocol was effective at reducing the peak tibial acceleration in high-impact runners by reacting to music-based biofeedback that was provided in real time per wearable technology in a training environment. Background: To enhance effective prevention programs after myocardial infarction (MI), the study examined the effects and feasibility of mobile biofeedback training on heart rate variability (HRV-BF). Methods: Forty-six outpatients aged 41 to 79 years with a documented MI were randomized to HRV-BF versus usual care. Generalized estimating equation (GEE) analyses were performed to test improvements in measures of short- and long-time HRV, namely, the standard deviation of the normal-to-normal intervals (SDNN) and well-being after 12 weeks of HRV-BF. Results: There were intervention effects for short-time HRV (d > 0.4, p < 0.04), which were partly replicated in the GEE models that accounted for control variables: In the HRV-BF group, the high-frequency HRV (group × time interaction: β = 0.59, p = 0.04) compensated for significantly lower baseline levels than the group with usual care. In an optimal dose sample (on average two HRV-BF sessions a day), SDNN significantly increased after HRV-BF (p = 0.002) but not in the waitlist control group. Compensatory trends of HRV-BF were also found for high-frequency HRV and self-efficacy. No adverse effects of the intervention were found but neither were effects on long-time HRV measures. Conclusion: The results showed the feasibility of self-guided HRV-BF for almost all post-MI patients. HRV-BF as an adjunctive behavioral treatment increased HRV, which is an indicator of lower cardiovascular risk, and self-efficacy, which suggests heightened psychological resilience. These benefits warrant confirmation and tests of sustainability in larger studies. J Strength Cond Res 36(4): 941-947, 2022-Real-time ultrasound imaging (RUSI) can serve as visual biofeedback to train deep muscle contraction in clinical rehabilitative settings. However, its effectiveness in resistance training in sports/fitness fields remains unexplored. This article introduced a newly developed wearable RUSI system that provided visual biofeedback of muscle thickening and movement and reported its effectiveness in improving the training outcomes of muscle thickness change (%) during dynamic contraction. Twenty-five healthy young men participated and performed pec fly exercise both with and without RUSI biofeedback. Statistical analysis was conducted to examine the reliability of the measurements and the immediate effects of (a) RUSI biofeedback of muscle contraction and (b) training intensity (50 vs. 80% of 1-repetition maximum [1RM]) on the pectoralis major (PMaj) thickness change measured by ultrasound images. In addition to significantly high inter-contraction reliability (ICC3,1 > 0.97), we observed significantly increased PMaj thickness change for both training intensities upon receiving biofeedback in subjects, compared with without biofeedback (p < 0.001). We also observed significantly larger PMaj thickness change at 80% of 1RM compared with 50% of 1RM (p = 0.023). The provision of visual biofeedback using RUSI significantly enlarged the magnitude of PMaj thickness change during pec fly exercises, potentially indicating that RUSI biofeedback could improve the ability of targeted muscle contraction of PMaj in healthy young adults. To our knowledge, this study has pioneered in applying RUSI as a form of biofeedback during weight training and observed positive effectiveness. Purpose: Although mobile apps are used extensively by speech-language pathologists, evidence for app-based treatments remains limited in quantity and quality. This study investigated the efficacy of app-based visual-acoustic biofeedback relative to nonbiofeedback treatment using a single-case randomization design. Because of COVID-19, all intervention was delivered via telepractice. Method: Participants were four children aged 9-10 years with residual errors affecting American English/?/. Using a randomization design, individual sessions were randomly assigned to feature practice with or without biofeedback, all delivered using the speech app Speech Therapist's App for/r/Treatment. Progress was assessed using blinded listener ratings of word probes administered at baseline, posttreatment, and immediately before and after each treatment session. Results: All participants showed a clinically significant response to the overall treatment package, with effect sizes ranging from moderate to very large. One participant showed a significant advantage for biofeedback over nonbiofeedback treatment, although the order of treatment delivery poses a potential confound for interpretation in this case. Conclusions: While larger scale studies are needed, these results suggest that app-based treatment for residual errors can be effective when delivered via telepractice. These results are compatible with previous findings in the motor learning literature regarding the importance of treatment dose and the timing of feedback conditions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The purpose of the current review study is to shed light on the relationship between respiration and attention. Specifically, we examined whether and how respiration can provoke alterations in attentional states. Secondly, we investigated the benefits of breath-control training techniques in attention. Furthermore, we explored the effectiveness of virtual reality breathing training in improving respiration along with attention. Finally, we discussed the role of metacognition in the conscious synchronization of respiration with attention. It was revealed that every time respiration loses stability, attention fluctuates. Every time respiration is stabilized, attention finds steadiness. The results confirmed that respiration, attention, and as a result consciousness are characterized by bidirectional synchronization since their systems present coupling functions and dynamical interactions. It was also confirmed that breath control practices guarantee instant as well as long-lasting attentional improvements regulating all those mechanisms that strengthen mental alertness firing either the pathways of relaxation or excitation. Conscious-breath training is a practice of mindful metacognition that supports the coupling of attention with respiration. Metacognition in breathing utilizes respiration to improve attention but at the same time attention is used as a tool to consciously control breathing. Finally, breathing control training in virtual reality not only improves attention along with respiration but may finetune internal and external attention. This study concludes that breathing and attention are two 'giant' mechanisms that go hand-in-hand and carry on their 'shoulders' the whole cognition. Training conscious breathing via advanced technologies should be incorporated into the dialogue of education as methods for brain rewiring assuring better inclusion and academic achievement, especially for those with disabilities. The aim of this study was to assess the effects of concurrent biomechanical biofeedback on the ability of novices to modify relative knee, spine, and elbow motions during a rowing-type task. After six non-instructed practice sessions, novices were assigned to a biofeedback (BFb; n = 7) or control group (Con; n = 7), before six, ten-minute sessions of continuous rowing were performed over 2 weeks. The BFb group received concurrent, visual biofeedback for developing sequential timing of knee, spine, and elbow motions during the pull. Following the intervention, the BFb group demonstrated delayed elbow flexion initiation (pre-intervention, 46 ± 11% pull; post-intervention, 78 ± 3% pull; p = 0.001). The biofeedback further promoted the consecutive ending of joint rotations (BFb: knee, 69 ± 4% pull; spine, 73 ± 7% pull; elbow, 85 ± 3% pull; Con: knee, 79 ± 8% pull; spine, 28 ± 6% pull; elbow, 79 ± 4% pull) and a move towards the sequential sequencing pattern. Concurrent biomechanical biofeedback during short-term training altered technique, possibly by providing guidance towards the desired movement pattern and increasing error detection and correction capabilities. Background: Neurofeedback is considered a promising intervention for the treatment of attention‐deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). NEWROFEED is a prospective, multicentre, randomized (3:2), reference drug‐controlled trial in children with ADHD aged between 7 and 13 years. The main objective of NEWROFEED was to demonstrate the noninferiority of personalized at‐home neurofeedback (NF) training versus methylphenidate in the treatment of children with ADHD. Methods: The NF group (n = 111) underwent eight visits and two treatment phases of 16 to 20 at‐home sessions with down‐training of the theta/beta ratio (TBR) for children with high TBR and enhancing the sensorimotor rhythm (SMR) for the others. The control group (n = 67) received optimally titrated long‐acting methylphenidate. The primary endpoint was the change between baseline and endpoint in the Clinician ADHD‐RS‐IV total score in the per‐protocol population (90 NF/59 controls). Trial registration: US National Institute of Health, ClinicalTrials.gov #NCT02778360. Results: Our study failed to demonstrate noninferiority of NF versus methylphenidate (mean between‐group difference 8.09 90% CI [8.09; 10.56]). However, both treatment groups showed significant pre–post improvements in core ADHD symptoms and in a broader range of problems. Reduction in the Clinician ADHD‐RS‐IV total score between baseline and final visit (D90) was 26.7% (SMD = 0.89) in the NF and 46.9% (SMD = 2.03) in the control group. NF effects increased whereas those of methylphenidate were stable between intermediate and final visit. Conclusions: Based on clinicians' reports, the effects of at‐home NF were inferior to those of methylphenidate as a stand‐alone treatment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
