The concept of urban transformations has gathered interest among scholars and policymakers calling for radical change towards sustainability. The discourse represents an entry point to address systemic causes of ecological degradation and social injustice, thereby providing solutions to intractable global challenges. Yet, so far, urban transformations projects have fallen short of delivering significant action in cities. The limited ability of this discourse to enable change is, in our view, linked with a broader dynamic that threatens progressive commitments to knowledge pluralism. There are discourses that, cloaked in emancipatory terminology, prevent the flourishing of radical ideas. The ivy is a metaphor to understand how such discourses operate. Ivy discourses grow from a radical foundation, but they do so while reproducing assumptions and values of mainstream discourses. We are concerned that urban transformations functions as an ivy discourse, which reproduces rather than challenges knowledge systems and relations that sustain hegemony. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In recent years, there has been renewed interest in conceptualising the political nature of human rights as well as intense debate over the precise nature of Western biases in the whole project. Spurred by the fresh renewal of radical theory, a growing body of literature explores the role that racialized power hierarchies have played in the human rights project through the Responsibility to Protect Doctrine. Drawing from critical human rights scholarship, this article explores the way human rights have been employed as a legitimising discourse for justifying military intervention in Libya. The argument of this paper is centred on early modern Tacitism and emergent political theory in Ben Jonson's England and his play Sejanus His Fall. Early modern political theory displayed a shift from a Christian humanist framework to what has been termed as Tacitean politics. In this paper, I will be discussing how Ben Jonson's Sejanus His Fall comments on current political affairs via contemporary Tacitism and particularly George Buchanan's political theory, especially his oeuvre De Jure Regni Apud Scotos; A Dialogue Concerning the Rights of the Crown in Scotland. Jonsonian scholarship has successfully discussed Ben Jonson's sources and focused mainly on the famous Flemish influence of Justus Lipsius's Tacitism but has overlooked George Buchanan's thought and his importance in the drama of Ben Jonson and his play Sejanus His Fall. The text is a continuation of a eulogy written in the memory of Professor Dirlik, made in Duke University, a year after his passing. It develops the three argument I perceived important in the difficulties I met to translate a part of Dirlik works in the French language: a complex relation to France's colonial past, a related reserve regarding radical theories, comforting a burying of Enlightenment ideals between inaudible intersectional quarrels and more complacent postures of conservatism. I try to show how the reading of Dirlik works help to better understand the connections between the riches of (post)colonial theory and the globalization of capitalism, with China in it. In the wider context of ways that Literacy works to enforce control by elites, the maintenance of high culture, racial stratification, national identity and social injustice through education, this review essay reflects on Allan Luke's collected essays republished by Routledge in 2018 as Critical literacy, schooling, and social justice: The selected works of Allan Luke. The article engages with some of the book's key concerns, investigating: scholarship advancing the politics and practice of language and literacy education; debates around the transformation of schooling for social justice; implications of changes to the political economy of the contemporary communications order; and finally how the book challenges us to consider the purposes and practices of academic scholarship for critical education. Ryabukhin showed that there is a correspondence between elementary radical classes of rings and certain filters of ideals of the free ring on one generator, analogous to the Gabriel correspondence between torsion classes of left unital modules and certain filters of left ideals of the coefficient ring. All possibilities for the intersection of the ideals in a filter are catalogued, and the connections between filters and other ways of describing elementary radical classes are investigated. Sustainable development, ecological modernisation, eco-efficiency and the like have reframed material limits as conventional barriers to growth. Even in recent arguments for degrowth, limits recede to the background in favour of self-limitation. To reclaim limits as the grounds for an effective environmental politics. I reconstruct how the case for the limits to growth was reversed into a case for the growth of limits, and how foundational boundaries were increasingly blurred. Arguing that lifestyle politics is unlikely to be effective against the growth machine, I elaborate on the notion of form-of-life. If not understood as a solipsistic self-mastery but as the mutually formative encounter of living entities – provided with their own dispositions yet sharing a common destiny – this notion puts the focus on how freedom and equality are premised on, rather than hampered by, limits. The notion of n-polynomial equation ring, for an arbitrary but fixed positive integer n, is introduced. A ring A is called an n- polynomial equation ring if γ(A[Xn]) = γ(A)[ Xn], for all radicals γ. If this equation holds for all hereditary radicals γ, then A is said to be a hereditary n-polynomial equation ring. Various characterizations of these rings are provided. It is shown that, for any ring A, the zero-ring on the additive group of A is an n- polynomial equation ring and that any Baer radical ring is a hereditary n- polynomial equation ring. In this paper, we first introduce the notions of pseudo symmetric subset and pseudo symmetric ideal of a near-ring and define pseudo symmetric near-ring. We prove that every completely prime (resp. completely semiprime) ideal of a near-ring is a pseudo symmetric ideal. We also show that a near-ring satisfying the strong insertion factor property (resp. the weak commutative near-ring ) is a pseudo sym- metric near-ring. This article explores Simone Weil's concept of 'affliction' and the black poetics of Saidiya Hartman and Fred Moten in relation to two nonfiction films: Artur Aristakisyan's Palms (1993) and Forough Farrokhzad's The House Is Black (1962). The films' contentiousness springs from their provocative depictions of suffering, presented not as a social ill but as a defiant mode of being outside of institutional power. Supplanting the search for a cure with the search for salvation, the films transcend the socially-conscious logic of documentary in favour of a 'religious algorithm' of profound but recalcitrant weakness. In this paper we first introduce the notion of McCoy over prime radicals (MPR ring) which is a generalization of Armendariz over prime radicals (APR ring) and McCoy rings. Then we investigate their properties. For a ring R, we prove that the n-by-n upper triangular matrix ring Tn(R) is MPR. In this paper, class operators are used to give a complete listing of distinct base radical and semisimple classes for universal classes of finite associative rings. General relations between operators reveal that the maximum order of the semigroup formed is 46. In this setting, the homomorphically closed semisimple classes are precisely the hereditary radical classes and hence radical–semisimple classes, and the largest homomorphically closed subclass of a semisimple class is a radical–semisimple class. We describe the split extension classifiers in the semi-abelian category of cocommutative Hopf algebras over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero. The categorical notions of centralizer and of center in the category of cocommutative Hopf algebras is then explored. This essay juxtaposes the current disorientation about the course of global political changes, the emergence of theories which accentuate the present as the domain of education, and punk culture with its proclamation that there is no future, as premises on which the question of radical theory is raised. Acclaiming the works of colleagues who promote thinking about education 'without time' and against instrumental demands, I expect that, in the situation in which we have 'no time' to design wellthought political alternatives to the waning liberal democracy and the rapidly growing fundamentalisms, a chaotic and energetic movement of thought, action, and resistance (here labelled as punk theory) can and should emerge as an energetic impulse to rethink and re-act the connections between education, theory, and politics. A special atom (respectively, supernilpotent atom) is a minimal element of the lattice $\mathbb{S}$ of all special radicals (respectively, a minimal element of the lattice $\mathbb{K}$ of all supernilpotent radicals). A semiprime ring $R$ is called prime essential if every nonzero prime ideal of $R$ has a nonzero intersection with each nonzero two-sided ideal of $R$. We construct a prime essential ring $R$ such that the smallest supernilpotent radical containing $R$ is not a supernilpotent atom but where the smallest special radical containing $R$ is a special atom. This article examines the experiences of the 1970-1975 Coventry Community Development Project in Hillfields as one of four first wave projects, and charts its avowed three stage shift from a consensual, to a pluralist and finally a class structuralist approach, developing a radical theory and practice that helped to shape the wider UK radical Community Development Project movement. While supporting the main features of the structural approach they developed in their 1975 Final Reports, we also raise critical issues that were of importance at the time, and have continuing relevance for community development in the challenging times we now face. In recent years, political forces from the Occupy movement in North America to the #FeesMustFall student protest in South Africa have attempted to disrupt the political order in the name of democratic equality. Inspired by radical theorists like Rancière, this politics promises a model of social change through the combination of the disruption of institutions and the reinvention of daily life and political subjectivities. I argue that this radical politics comes with significant limits if it ignores the requirement to build more inclusive policies and new institutions too. This is because disruption alone may extend exclusion by prompting more elite coercion and popular backlash. This claim is illustrated through the example of the #FeesMustFall movement. What is needed instead is a radical politics that also includes a clear theoretical focus on policy and institutional change, such as is contained in Hamilton's account of freedom as power through representation. The expansion of education and the mass inclusion of generations in certain levels of education have not reduced inequality in education. There have still been numerous causes and forms of social inequality, with far-reaching consequences. The consequences of social inequalities in education are very complex and are manifested in the form of reproduction of social inequality, that is, the self-reproduction of social stratification and the reproduction of economic inequality. Scientists working in various fields deal with the clarification of the problems of social inequality in education and everyone can, from their own standpoint, attempt to discover the basic causes of these inequalities so as to overcome them. In paper we have shown four current theoretical approaches to the problem of social inequality in education: the functionalist theory, radical theory, theory of educational capital and theory of cultural deprivation. Every approach from its own standpoint tries to indicate the relationship between the educational system and social structure, as well as the possibility of overcoming certain social inequality. Based on the analysis of the basic tenets of various theoretical approaches to inequality in education conceptualized the initial hypotheses as the foundation for the functioning of the educational system in the future, based on the principles of meritocracy. Almost everyone agrees that knowledge can be transmitted via testimony, but only some think that transmission is a special phenomenon, and one that has been largely neglected in epistemology. Let's call this “special transmission,” or transmission*. This paper offers a positive proposal for characterizing transmission*, and then considers a radical theoretical option: that an adequate account of transmission* cannot be given in traditional epistemological categories. We then deal with elementary properties of LN rings, observing relations between this and other known classes of rings. This article analyses how the development of theorisations of disability has been influenced by social movements. Firstly, it includes an analysis of the evolution of explanation models of disability, from the Medical Model to the Social Model. Secondly, it shows how the practice of social movements - especially, albeit not only, the movement for independent living - has been a key factor in the production of new concepts and theories to explain, and to act upon, disability. Finally, it selects a set of contributions from new social movements and contemporary radical theory in order to outline an anthropological perspective that surpasses the limitations of the Social Model, placing the axis of the reflection on the power devices and domination mechanisms that construct disability. We present a ring theoretic approach to Černý's conjecture via the Wedderburn-Artin theory. We first introduce the radical ideal of a synchronizing automaton, and then the natural notion of semisimple synchronizing automata. This is a rather broad class since it contains simple synchronizing automata like those in Černý's series. Semisimplicity gives also the advantage of 'factorizing' the problem of finding a synchronizing word into the sub-problems of finding 'short' words that are zeros into the projection of the simple components in the Wedderburn-Artin decomposition. In the general case this last problem is related to the search of radical words of length at most where n is the number of states of the automaton. We show that the solution of this 'Radical Conjecture' would give an upper bound for the shortest reset word in a strongly connected synchronizing automaton. Finally, we use this approach to prove the Radical Conjecture in some particular cases and Černý's conjecture for the class of strongly semisimple synchronizing automata. These are automata whose sets of synchronizing words are cyclic ideals, or equivalently, ideal regular languages that are closed under taking roots. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This essay explores the lasting theoretical value of Marcuse's "repressive desublimation" via the psychoanalytic concepts of Zizek and Lacan. It argues that Marcuse's theory should be adapted to include Lacanian notions of death drive and enjoyment, but also that it remains particularly suitable to structurally define consumer capitalist ideologies that incorporate both drive and immediate gratification to reinforce institutional patriarchy. Combining the theories then reveals a paradoxical demand to "enjoy responsibly," which engenders various indirect rationalizations of Marcuse's "performance principle." This essay discusses the relevance of Herbert Marcuse's One-Dimensional Man for contemporary radical politics. It approaches the topic from an unconventional perspective: the untimely nature of One-Dimensional Man, i-e., its being conceived in the 1940s as an answer to the crisis of Marxism after the defeat of European communist revolutions in the early twentieth century and published in the 1960s in the very moment when the postwar stabilization was to collapse. From this perspective, its relevance for a political theory and praxis of global radical movements is not to be found in its main concepts and categories (e.g., "totalitarianism"), but on its shortcuts and limits, especially those related to political subjectivity. I discuss how I came to read, interpret, understand, critique, and use One-Dimensional Man, and I consider the book's reception and relevance in the 1960s when it appeared, suggesting how its ideas relate to experiences and developments within US society and global capitalism from the 1940s and 1950s. Then, I examine how the model of one-dimensional society was put in question by the struggles and upheavals of the 1960s, how Herbert Marcuse revised his model in the 1970s, and how it fares in making sense of developments in the succeeding decades, up to the present. The same result of different ansätz based on extended tanh-function method for nonlinear models is firstly reported. As an example, we obtain eleven kinds of variable separation solutions of variable-coefficient Boiti–Leon–Pempinelli system based on the extended tanh-function method by considering three different ansätz, namely, positive power-form ansatz, positive and negative power-symmetric ansatz and radical sign combined ansatz. By careful analysis, we find that these seemly independent variable separation solutions are essentially same. From this perspective, different ansätz are not really effective to construct so-called “new” solutions. We study the stability group of subspace series of infinite dimensional vector spaces. In [1] , the authors proved that when the vector space has countable dimension then the Hirsch–Plotkin radical of the stability group coincides with the set of all space automorphisms that fix a finite subseries and they conjectured that this would hold in all dimensions. We give a counter example of dimension 2 ℵ 0 . We however show that in general the result remains true if the Hirsch–Plotkin radical is replaced by the Fitting group, the product of all the normal nilpotent subgroups of the stability group. A module M over a ring is called simple-direct-injective if, whenever A and B are simple submodules of M with A ≅ B and B ⊆ ⊕ M , we have A ⊆ ⊕ M . Various basic properties of these modules are proved, and some well-studied rings are characterized using simple-direct-injective modules. For instance, it is proved that a ring R is artinian serial with Jacobson radical square zero if and only if every simple-direct-injective right R -module is a C3-module, and that a regular ring R is a right V -ring (i.e., every simple right R -module is injective) if and only if every cyclic right R -module is simple-direct-injective.
