This individualized, self-paced course for training an entomology specialist was adapted from military curriculum materials for use in vocational and technical education. Completion of the course should provide students with basic information needed to accomplish the following duties of an entomology specialist: perform entomological work, apply toxic pesticides, perform control operations and preventive operations, operate and calibrate dispersal and safety equipment, maintain tools and equipment, and supervise entomology personnel. The document consists of a student workbook with objectives, assignments, review exercises and answers, volume review exercises, and a test. The workbook consists of six volumes. The first volume introduces pest management and safety, while the second contains information about pesticides and the environment and pesticide dispersal equipment. In the third volume, pests carried by domestic animals are discussed, while in the fourth household pests such as spiders and reptiles are examined. The final chapters provide information on the collection, identification, and control of economic pests (such as stored product pests, structural pests, and ornamental and turf pests) and vertebrate and vegetative pests (rodents, bats, birds, aquatic plants, grasses, and herbaceous broadleaf plants). This plan of instruction, lesson plans, and student study guides and workbooks for a secondary-postsecondary level course for an entomology specialist are one of a number of military-developed curriculum packages selected for adaptation to vocational instruction and curriculum development in a civilian setting. The course includes training on procedures for insect and rodent control, collection and identification of specimens, determination of control measures, identification and use of treatment solutions, and operation and maintenance of insecticide dispersal equipment. Three blocks of instruction cover 155 hours: (1) Entomology Fundamentals, Pesticides, and Equipment (11 lessons, 49 hours); (2) Control of Medically Important Pests (9 lessons, 58 hours); and (3) Control of Economically Important Pests (7 lessons, 48 hours). A Specialty Training Standard for student evaluation is provided. The plan of instruction details the units of instruction, objectives, duration of lessons, and support materials needed. A study guide and a workbook are provided for each block. These materials contain objectives, reading assignments, and review exercises. Military manuals, commercial texts, and audiovisuals are recommended, but not provided. This eight-volume student text is designed for use by Air Force personnel enrolled in a self-study extension course for pest management specialists. Covered in the individual volumes are civil engineering; pest management (entomology, pest management planning and coordination, and safety and protective equipment); pest management chemicals and equipment (pesticides in the environment, pesticide characteristics and classification, and pesticide dispersal equipment); disease vectors (mosquitoes, flies, fleas, lice, ticks, and mites); vertebrate pests (rodents, birds, and others); economic pests (pests of stored products, structural pests, and ornamental and turf pests); household, venomous, and vegetative pests; and general contingency responsibilities (first aid techniques, field hygiene and sanitation, work party security, convoy techniques, expedient field water treatment, and vehicle operation). Each volume in the set contains a series of lessons, exercises at the end of each lesson, a bibliography, and answers to the exercises. Volume review exercises and a change supplement for the package are also included. (MN)

This teacher guide was developed to assist teachers of elementary children in their preparation to teach some lessons on rat control. The overall objectives include determining the level of student understanding about rats, developing student attitudes toward rats, developing the student's ability to identify the rat's weapons, identifying those items that rats must have to live, identifying specific acts which students are able to understand to get rid of rats, discriminating between items rats will eat and items they can not eat, identifying and correcting real conditions in the neighborhood, communicating the existence of a rat control problem to the parental group, and reinforcing and testing of the overall program. The plan development includes overall objectives, specific objectives, teacher procedures, support materials, and learner responses and conclusions. The Zimbabwe Secondary School Science Project (ZIM-SCI) developed student study guides, corresponding teaching guides, and science kits for a low-cost science course which could be taught during the first 2 years of secondary school without the aid of qualified teachers and conventional laboratories. This ZIM-SCI study guide is a three-part unit consisting of activities, experiments, and readings on: (1) plant and animal cells; (2) growth and reproduction; and (3) human reproduction. Experiments provided include examining plant and animal cells, preparing models of these cells, and dissecting a rat. Information is also provided throughout the unit to help students understand the scientific principles behind the activities and experiments. Because students may come from traditional homes where various topics in this unit are not discussed (such as human reproduction and family planning), it is suggested that sections containing these topics may be read silently. Presented are instructions for the use of "RATS," a model simulating the dynamics of a rat population in either a city or an apartment house. The student controls the conditions of growth and sets the points at which the computer program prints reports. The rat population is controlled by variables including garbage levels selected for the site, and types and quantity of poison applied. At the end of the simulation, the program prints details on the nature of the rat population, the dollar value of damage done by the rats, cost of poison, and amount of poison left uneaten. This training manual, designed for training applicants who wish to obtain certification in pesticide application relative to rodent control, covers the following topics: economic factors, public health factors, biological characteristics of domestic rodents, rat and mouse signs, trapping, repellents, poisons, baits, poisoned water, dumps, sewers, gassing, fumigation, dead rat odors, and ratproofing. This unit was developed as a guide for use by Kentucky teachers in planning and conducting young farmer/adult farmer classes in the use of agricultural pesticides. The unit contains seven lessons covering the following topics: understanding the importance of agricultural pesticides; using and handling agricultural pesticides safely; developing a comprehensive pest control program; and using herbicides, insecticides, fungicides, and miscellaneous pesticides. The lesson format was designed to assist teachers in using problem-solving techniques and the discussion method. Each lesson contains an objective, problem and analysis, outline of content, and suggestions for teaching the lesson, including enrichment activities and resources.
