The shock-to-detonation transition properties of the triaminotrinitrobenzene based PBX 9502 high explosive (HE) are experimentally and computationally explored in extremely high input pressure conditions. These include both slightly sub-Chapman–Jouguet and overdriven input pressure conditions, namely, ∼ 25 and ∼ 31 GPa, respectively. Our experiments capture the transient buildup of a shock-induced reaction via measurement of HE and polymethyl methacrylate window interface particle velocity profiles for a variety of sample thicknesses for this insensitive HE. These observations necessitate extremely thin explosive samples, and the high rates of reaction provide a considerable challenge to optical diagnostics. Samples at these thicknesses also provide an opportunity for evaluation of potential micro-structure effects on the resulting shock-to-detonation-transition measurements. To address this, the thin samples are also characterized via x-ray micro-computed tomography. Finally, a pair of previously established continuum-level detonation performance modeling approaches for PBX 9502 were used to analyze the experiments. The employed model variants crucially differ in their definition of each model's empirical reaction rate functional form, utilization of shock state quantities, and local flow variable dependencies. As a result, the present experiments provide a novel platform to evaluate the quantitative and qualitative consequences stemming from these modeling choices in a challenging initiation scenario, largely beyond the chosen calibration range of either model. The plastic flow of ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) at a frictional interface, which is critical to the wear behavior, was investigated by reactive molecular dynamics simulations. The UHMWPE substrate was found to experience various deformations during the friction process. First, some polyethylene (PE) chains could detach from the substrate because of their rapid movement. Second, the frequent motion of PE chains also resulted in the intermittent formation and breaking of cavities between intermolecular PE chains. These deformations were more obvious on a surface with a convex protrusion, where the plowing effect exacerbated the cavitation and elastic deformation of PE chains. Correspondingly, the plastic flow in turn reconstructed the convex protrusion by displacing the surface atoms on the Fe slab. The plastic flow of PE chains broke the C–C bonds, and the carbon moieties were then chemically bonded onto the metal surface. A rapid change of atomic charge, hence, happened when the bonds broke. Meanwhile, PE chains release short alkyl radicals gradually after bond breakage, indicating gradual wear of the substrate during friction. State estimation stands as one of the most crucial applications in energy management systems of control centres, ensuring the secure operation of the power system. The real‐time availability of accurate system variables, including voltages, currents, and power flows, presents an excellent opportunity to consider the actual network characteristics, including imbalances. This paper presents a linear and non‐iterative method to solve the three‐phase state estimation problem in transmission systems with unbalanced loading. The method utilises supervisory control and data acquisition measurements obtained from remote terminal units. The formulation is based on complex variables derived from traditional supervisory control and data acquisition measurements, with assumptions made regarding the availability of certain three‐phase bus voltages, as well as a number of three‐phase currents and active and reactive power flows. The proposed algorithm employs the classical weighted least squares technique for solving the three‐phase state estimation problem. Due to its straightforward and linear nature, the method ensures no convergence issues. To validate its effectiveness, the proposed method is validated on a three‐bus network and the IEEE 39‐bus network simulated using the three‐phase model within the DIgSILENT Power Factory environment. This paper uses a reactive flow large eddy simulation (LES) and decomposition techniques to study combustion instabilities in a methane–oxygen combustor. This work examines two case scenarios to elucidate the significance of injector–chamber frequency coupling as the cause of thermo-acoustic instability. Initial investigation in a well-known benchmark case of the continuously variable resonance combustor (CVRC) reports the potential instability mechanisms and the role of injector–chamber frequency coupling in thermo-acoustic instability. Subsequently, the multi-element rocket combustor case study identifies the critical resonant modes and highlights potential frequency coupling between the injector and the chamber region. The interplay between longitudinal pressure oscillations in the oxidizer post and transverse pressure waves in the chamber is responsible for the enhanced pressure dynamics in the combustor. The present work uses the dynamic mode decomposition (DMD) technique to reveal the evolution of acoustic modes in the injector and the chamber for CVRC and multi-element combustor. The dominant pressure mode forms found by DMD analysis also showcase the role of injector–chamber frequency coupling in amplified combustion dynamics. The results demonstrate how the predominant cause of combustion instability in rocket combustors can be effectively determined using the high-fidelity LES framework in conjunction with the modal decomposition technique. One of the most significant techniques of heat exchange in manufacturing appliances is convective heat transfer which can be enhanced by porous media and magnetic fields in various applications such as improving dramatically the different thermal equipment performance. This study investigates magnetohydrodynamic Maxwell nanofluid saturated in a porous medium towards convectively heated extending cylinder with higher-order chemical reactions. The ordinary differential equations resolved by using the optimal homotopy analysis method. The impact of various relevant factors on the schemes of velocity, energy, and concentration is drawn via diagrams and discussed physically through graphs, and discussions. The correlation between current and previously published findings is noted for accuracy. It is found that the heat transfer enhances when the Biot number and order of chemical reaction increase. When, the parameter of reaction, magnetic field, permeability and Eckert number increase, the heat transfer diminishes. The rising values of Joule heating, chemical reaction and Biot number rises the mass transfer, but in the opposite direction the mass transfer is reduced as the magnetic parameter, permeability and the order of chemical reaction grow. In recent years, the atmospheric pressure plasma jet (APPJ) has gained considerable attention in the field of optical fabrication because the chemical etching approach offers the advantage of avoiding mechanical damage to workpieces. This paper presents the development of an atmospheric pressure plasma machining system with a ring-ring typed APPJ, which exhibits several favorable characteristics. It has a relatively low processing temperature, no electrode corrosion, no plasma contamination, and a long discharge plume, etc. Optimization of the dimensional parameters and analysis of reactive gas flow rate are conducted through experimental investigations. Comparative experiments are carried out with the commonly used needle-ring typed APPJ, revealing significant improvements of the ring-ring typed APPJ, i.e., a fourfold increase in machining distance, a tenfold increase in machining efficiency, and a 58% enhancement in the stability of the material volumetric removal rate. Furthermore, on-line temperature monitoring of the footprint has been achieved due to the specific traits of the extended discharge plume. Multi‐scale modeling allows the description of real reactive systems under industrially relevant conditions. However, its application to rational catalyst and reactor design is hindered by the prohibitively high computational cost associated with the chemical kinetics on the catalyst scale. Here, the computational cost is drastically reduced by introducing goal‐oriented kernel models that serve as surrogates for the chemical kinetics. This special model type allows for automated training set design and reliable results, even outside the training region. In today's context of power generation from wind, the demand for reliable and high-performing inverters is on the rise. The quasi-Z-source inverters (q-ZSI) are gaining attention in grid-tied wind power generation systems (WPGS) when compared to conventional inverters for their inherent capability of single-stage power conversion and maximum power point tracking (MPPT) performance. However, the erratic nature of wind speed creates a constant challenge for engineers seeking to optimize the performance of wind turbines (WT). Therefore, this paper suggests a new grey wolf-optimized MPPT (GWO-MPPT) controller for q-ZSI-based grid-tied WPGS, which holds great potential for maximizing the power output of WTs. The conventional MPPT controller used in q-ZSI-based WPGS cannot guarantee stable operation during large variations in wind speed. The GWO-MPPT controller can immediately respond during wind speed variations and trace the maximum power point (MPP) without fluctuations around it, thus improving the MPPT performance. The GWO algorithm estimates the optimum rectifier DC voltage for each wind speed to locate the MPP and subsequently determines the shoot-through duty ratio for the q-ZSI. In addition, this work introduces a decoupling current control strategy supported by dual frequency modulation (DFM) for managing the grid's active and reactive power flows. The functionality of the proposed controllers is rigorously examined using the MATLAB/Simulink tool through extensive simulations. Finally, their practicality is evaluated through an experimental hardware setup. A novel volume of fluid method is presented for mineral precipitation coupled with fluid flow and reactive transport. The approach describes the fluid-solid interface as a smooth transitional region, which is designed to provide the same precipitation rate and viscous drag force as a sharp interface. Specifically, the governing equation of mineral precipitation is discretized by an upwind scheme, and a rigorous effective viscosity model is derived around the interface. The model is validated against analytical solutions for mineral precipitation in channel and ring-shaped structures. It also compares well with interface tracking simulations of advection-diffusion-reaction problems. The methodology is finally employed to model mineral precipitation in fracture networks, which is challenging due to the low porosity and complex geometry. Compared to other approaches, the proposed model has a concise algorithm and contains no free parameters. This paper presents and discusses the results obtained by the participants to the benchmark described in de Hoop et al, Comput. Geosci. (2024). The benchmark uses a model for CO2 geological storage and focuses on the coupling between two-phase flow and geochemistry. Several test cases of various levels of difficulty are proposed, both in one and two spatial dimensions. Six teams participated in the benchmark, each with their own simulation code, though not all teams attempted all the cases. The codes used by the participants are described, and the results obtained on the various test cases are compared, as well as the performance of the codes. It is shown that the results obtained are widely consistent, giving a good level of confidence in the outcome of the benchmark. The general complexity of two-phase flow coupled with chemical reactions altering porous media means that some differences between the codes remain. Besides, from the convergence study, it is clear that the two-dimensional problem has a relatively high sensitivity to a spatial resolution which adds to the complexity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The formation of new mineral phases in confined environments, especially in porous media, is crucial for various geological processes like mineralization and diagenesis. The nucleation and precipitation of minerals are initiated at the microscale through fluid‐rock interaction, where dissolution of primary phases leads to supersaturated conditions and nucleation and growth of secondary ones. Previous research has focused primarily on either precipitation or nucleation, without fully exploring their combined impact. Our study introduces a computational framework that integrates classical nucleation theory with the micro‐continuum method. We validated our model by comparing with experiments, and discovered that different surface nucleation rate changes the mode of precipitation from a preferential to uniform precipitate textures. Furthermore, our study uncovered that the conventional deterministic precipitation method tends to underestimate the permeability of the porous matrix. In contrast, the new framework significantly improves model accuracy by incorporating preferential precipitation and heterogeneous nucleation. Plain Language Summary: The formation of minerals in confined environments, especially in porous media, is important for both natural processes and industrial applications. The resulting solid phases can greatly affect the porosity and permeability of the porous structure. Many previous studies have focused on either nucleation or precipitation, we still have a limited understanding of how both processes interact at different scales. In this study, we integrated the Darcy‐Brinkman‐Stokes method and classical nucleation theory to investigate the interplay between nucleation, precipitation, species transport, and their impact on permeability. Our findings show that adjusting the surface nucleation rates can change the mode of mineral precipitation from preferential to uniform. We also found that the traditional deterministic precipitation method underestimates permeability in certain scenario. Therefore, considering probabilistic nucleation is crucial when there is preferential precipitation and heterogeneous nucleation on the interfaces between the minerals and surrounding liquid under reactive flow conditions. Nonlinear heterogeneous reactions are important for simulating dissolution as they involve reactant adsorption, reaction, and product desorption, leading to nonlinear behavior. This study proposes a new curved reaction boundary condition in general form in the lattice Boltzmann framework. This method calculates the unknown distribution functions and the interface concentration using extrapolated distribution functions on actual interface position. Various analytical benchmarks were used to compare this method's accuracy with two available schemes, including Kashani et al. and Huber et al. methods. According to the results, in the simulation of reactant transport on straight and curved surfaces with and without dissolution, errors obtained by the proposed method did not exceed 1.7% in different conditions, while errors of the two other methods were up to 50%. The convergence rate of different methods was determined, and based on the results, the convergence rate of the proposed method was second-order, while the corresponding values for the two other methods were only first-order. The results of different root-finding methods in the proposed method including Bisection, Newton-Raphson, and linear approximation were compared to determine the interface concentration. The results showed that Bisection errors did not exceed 1%. At the same time, using Newton-Raphson and linear approximation led to errors of 12.9% and 25.3%, respectively. The effect of reaction orders on an obstacle dissolved under reactive flows in a channel was investigated. According to the results, in each Damköhler number, increasing the reaction order decreased the dissolution rate; however, increasing the Damköhler number significantly restricted the effect of orders. The reduction of carbon emissions has become a critical global issue, and the use of monoethanolamine (MEA) solution for CO2 absorption is prevalent in industry. To elucidate the mass transfer mechanisms in reactive multiphase flow, we employed high-speed photography and digital image processing to examine the dynamics and mass transfer behavior of CO2 bubbles in a Hele-Shaw cell. The results indicate that as the MEA solution concentration increases, oscillations during bubble ascent diminish, and the terminal velocity decreases. Based on changes in the mass transfer coefficient, the reaction process can be segmented into a phase of intensified mass transfer, marked by a rapid decrease in bubble equivalent diameter, and a phase of deteriorating mass transfer, where the diameter stabilizes. In this article we explore (a) optical and (b) thermochemical properties of reactive hypersonic flows, with an emphasis on oxygen dynamics and time resolved measurement capabilities. First, we discuss experimental and numerical analysis of reactive hypersonic flows of an argon–oxygen mixture over a blunt wedge geometry. The experimental campaign for that geometry uses Michelson interferometry to determine the refractive index of the shock layer. Numerical analysis of these cases reveals that there is dissociation of molecular oxygen in the shock layer. Excellent comparison between numerically predicted and nanosecond sampled experimentally observed refractive index serve as verification of non-equilibrium refractive index theory and the thermochemistry models used in the simulation. Uncertainties and limitations of the interferometry technique are discussed. In addition, we perform subnanosecond sampled femtosecond/picosecond hybrid Coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering (CARS) spectroscopy behind a hypersonic Mach stem configuration in a pure oxygen flow to demonstrate capabilities to enhance understanding of nonequilibrium vibrational mode contributions to the refractive index. Scramjet engines represent one of the most promising alternatives to power hypersonic vehicles, although the peculiarities of supersonic combustion raise many challenges. Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations can be used to model highly turbulent reactive flows in such complex configurations and avoid expensive experimental campaigns. A particularly challenging aspect when dealing with numerical simulations of turbulent combustion is accurately modelling the interactions between chemistry and turbulence. These interactions can play a significant role in supersonic flows and require an appropriate closure since the conditions encountered in supersonic flows differ from those of conventional combustion devices. For this reason, an assessment of the role of turbulence-chemistry interactions in supersonic combustion is needed. This work evaluates the performance of the Partially-Stirred Reactor (PaSR) closure of the mean chemical source term by performing Reynolds-Averaged Navier–Stokes (RANS) simulations of two selected test cases, namely, the Burrows and Kurkov combustor and the German Aerospace Centre (DLR) scramjet. The PaSR approach requires the definitions of two important quantities: mixing and chemical time scales. While the chemical time scale is related to finite-rate chemistry, supersonic flow conditions can affect the most appropriate definition of the mixing time scale. For this reason, several formulations of the mixing time scale are tested in this work. The PaSR model is validated against experimental data and also compared to the finite-rate approach without turbulence-chemistry interactions (FR/No-TCI) and the Eddy Dissipation Concept (EDC). In the Burrows and Kurkov test case, the PaSR model can accurately predict the main quantities of interest (e.g., temperature and chemical compositions), showing better results than the FR/No-TCI and similar to the EDC model. The validation on the DLR case confirms these trends and highlights the importance of accounting for turbulence-chemistry interaction in supersonic combustion modelling. However, the EDC model is not able to predict a stable ignited flame in the DLR combustor. The presence of recirculation zones near the strut injector of the DLR scramjet can explain the better performance of the PaSR model versions employing the integral-based and geometric mean formulations, which estimate comparable values of the mixing time but higher than those of other time scale approaches considered in this work. • Supersonic combustion is characterised by similar chemical and mixing time scales. • The Partially Stirred Reactor model is suitable for RANS simulations of supersonic combustion. • The model performs better than a laminar finite-rate approach and Eddy Dissipation Concept. • The choice of the mixing time scale affects the Partially Stirred Reactor accuracy. • The most appropriate mixing time scale is selected for two scramjet combustion test cases. The deeper penetration of renewables in the energy mix is an intense requirement in order to reduce global carbon dioxide emissions. In addition, new technologies are being developed, such as electric mobility and Distributed Generation (DG) in urban areas. However, the unpredictable fluctuations in energy generation from roof-installed PVs and the switching operation of their inverters greatly aggravate the already-present grid quality problems. In this paper, the Smart Boiler (SB) concept for grid quality improvement is presented. Furthermore, its experimental verification is implemented on a flexible testbed that accurately emulates several realistic scenarios for the low voltage distribution grid, under complex operating conditions. The proposed low-cost electronic kit, which contains a converter of fairly simple topology and requires connection to the internet, is used to upgrade conventional domestic boilers to smart devices. The SB automatically regulate the local reactive power flow, helping to stabilize the voltage level and suppress the grid current harmonic content, with both services provided in a matter of seconds. The higher the active power consumed and the denser the SB cluster, the wider the beneficial impact on the affected network area. While this service is provided, excess energy generated by PVs is temporarily stored as heat in the boiler tanks, given the users' hot water consumption habits. The whole application, as a powerful demand-side management tool, proves beneficial for both the network operator and the end-user, especially when self-consumption is desirable in order to achieve a Nearly Zero Energy Building. A non-isothermal physicochemical model of reactive sputtering is extended in this work. The new version is used in this work to simulate reactive sputtering of a sandwich target with two plates of different metals located on the same axis. The external plate contains cut-outs through which the internal plate is sputtered. The main independent process parameters are the reactive gas flow introduced into the vacuum chamber, the discharge current density, and the total area of cut-outs in the external plate. The physical model of the process is described by a system containing 14 algebraic equations. Only its numerical solution is possible, which allows studying the sputtering process in detail. The model can be used to estimate the conditions that ensure the deposition of a compound film in a real technological process. The model was used to analyze sputtering of a target with internal titanium and external tantalum plates in oxygen. The main aim of this paper is to provide numerical simulation for viscous nanofluid by stretching cylinder using Buongiorno's model. Dissipation, Joule heating and magnetic impact with irreversibility analysis are examined. Furthermore, Brownian movement and thermophoresis diffusion effects are studied. Through constitutive relations, nonlinear equations are obtained. By adopting suitable variables, the partial differential equations are changed to ordinary differential equations. Entropy rate is calculated using thermodynamics second law. ND-solve technique in Mathematica is employed to tackle dimensionless ordinary differential equations. The behavior of flow controlling parameters is examined graphically. Physical quantities are discussed through tables. A decrement in velocity is seen through magnetic effect, while opposite impact is seen for entropy rate. A similar scenario is seen for thermal field through random and thermophoresis variables. In a DFIG grid interconnected system, the control of real and reactive power relies on various factors. This paper presents an approach to regulate the flow of real and reactive power using a Neural Tuning Machine (NTM) based on a recurrent neural network. The focus is on controlling the flow of reactive power from the rotor-side converter, which is proportional to the grid-side controller through a coupling voltage. The proposed NTM method leverages neural networks to fine-tune the parameters of the PI controller, optimizing performance for DFIG grid integration. By integrating dense plexus terminals, also known as dense connections, within the neural network, the control system achieves enhanced adaptability, robustness, and nonlinear dynamics, addressing the challenges of the grid. Grid control actions are based on the voltage profile at different bus locations, thereby regulating voltage. This article meticulously examines the analysis in terms of DFIG configuration and highlights the advantages of the neural tuning machine in controlling inner current loop parameters compared to conventional PI controllers. To demonstrate the robustness of the control algorithm, a MATLAB Simulink model is designed, and validation is conducted with three different benchmarking models. All calculations and results presented in the article strictly adhere to IEEE and IEC standards. Oil shale is a potential strategic resource with large reserves and widespread application potential, and in situ combustion is an effective method to exploit oil shale. However, the interaction mechanism between pyrolysis and combustion reaction is still not clear; hence, the evolution of components and temperature in the reservoir is hard to describe, limiting the application of in situ combustion in oil shale. In this paper, we established a comprehensive reactive flow model to describe the in situ combustion in oil shale, and the in situ combustion process is analyzed in detail. During the in situ combustion, only pyrolysis reactions occur in the matrix system, while combustion reactions only occur in the fracture system. Under the interaction mechanisms of these two kinds of chemical reactions, in situ combustion upgrading can be carried out continuously. The produced oil and hydrocarbon gas per unit volume of oil shale are 0.06 m3/m3 and 12.5 m3/m3 , respectively, but about 83.3 m3/m3 of CO2 is produced that needs to be stored subsequently when air is directly injected into the reservoir to maintain the combustion reactions. Increasing oil content and air injection rate can increase the cumulative oil and gas production, but there are optimal values above which the increase rate slows down. The energy conversion efficiency of in situ combustion is 49.5, and it is much higher than the energy conversion efficiency in other in situ upgrading methods for oil shale. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This research utilizes the innovative fractional-order Archimedean spiral moth–flame optimization (FO-AMFO) technique to address the issues of the optimal reactive power dispatch (ORPD) problem. The formulated fitness function aims to minimize power losses and determine the ideal flow of reactive power for the IEEE 30- and 57-bus test systems. The extensive functions of the fractional evolutionary computing strategy are utilized to address the minimization problem of ORPD. This involves determining the control variables, such as VAR compensators, bus voltages, and the tap setting of the transformers. The effective incorporation of reactive compensation devices into traditional power grids has greatly reduced power losses; however, it has resulted in an increase in the complexity of optimization problems. This study investigated the flow and flame structure of a bluff-body stabilised CH4-H2 flame using the large eddy simulation (LES) and the flamelet progress variable (FPV) model. The performance of three subgrid-scale (SGS) LES models, i.e. the standard Smagorinsky model (SSM), the wall-adapting local eddy viscosity (WALE) model, and the dynamic Smagorinsky model (DSM) in predicting turbulent and reactive flow characteristics was assessed. Parameters, namely y+, Pope index (M), vorticity field, and resolved turbulent kinetic energy (kt), were analysed to determine the predictive capability of the three models. The results demonstrated that DSM and WALE successfully resolved 80% of kt for chosen grid configurations, whereas SSM exhibited discrepancies. The overall trends captured by all three models matched well with the experimental trend with DSM and WALE outperforming SSM in predicting reacting flow fields in the recirculation zone, while SSM produced better predictions in the regions away from the recirculating zone. The spectral characterization of flow-field parameters provides a new perspective for understanding the spatiotemporal evolution of unsteady supersonic exhaust plumes and for extracting typical structures. In this study, a large-eddy simulation is performed to calculate the three-dimensional unsteady supersonic plume flow field of rocket engines, and a spectral proper orthogonal decomposition (SPOD) method with a spatiotemporal separation is established. This approach is used to extract the coherent structural features of the unsteady exhaust plume flow field and analyze the mode space structure at different frequencies. The three-dimensional reconstruction and denoising of the exhaust plume flow-field parameters can be achieved via the frequency- and time-domain reconstructions of the SPOD algorithm and oblique projection method, respectively. The ground rocket exhaust plume of ballistic evaluation motor-II is analyzed. The results indicate that the SPOD method can effectively extract the single-frequency mode structure of the reactive supersonic flow field, and that low-order behavior appears in the m = 0 and m = 1 azimuth modes. The potential core exhibits a high-frequency wave-packet structure that is affected by shock waves and shear layers. Time-domain reconstruction based on the oblique projection method facilitates the capture of the dynamic characteristics of the flow field. For the first-order SPOD mode, the frequency- and time-domain reconstruction errors are 3.3% and 1.5%, respectively. The frequency-domain reconstruction method exhibits a 4% improvement in denoising ability compared to low-pass filters. In special launch scenarios such as armament and aerospace, the scale of the launch system is severely restricted, which causes unstable combustion of propellant. An embedded structure for the small propulsion system driven by solid propellant is proposed to overcome this problem. This study aims to demonstrate the two-phase flow behaviors and launch safety of the combustion chamber with an embedded structure. A two-dimensional two-phase flow model based on the modified two-fluid theory is developed to describe the detailed two-phase flow behaviors in the combustion chamber during launching. Different from most of the existing studies, the constitutive equations determined from actual physical conditions are used to close the system of continuity equations. The numerical results are compared with that of the experiment to verify the accuracy of the numerical model. On this basis, the launch performance of the embedded structure is investigated. The numerical results indicate that the embedded structure facilitates the ignition process and reduces the risk of excessive pressure, but decreases the muzzle velocity at the same time. In addition, the effect of design parameters on launch safety is further investigated. Local-first software manages and processes private data locally while still enabling collaboration between multiple parties connected via partially unreliable networks. Such software typically involves interactions with users and the execution environment (the outside world). The unpredictability of such interactions paired with their decentralized nature make reasoning about the correctness of local-first software a challenging endeavor. Yet, existing solutions to develop local-first software do not provide support for automated safety guarantees and instead expect developers to reason about concurrent interactions in an environment with unreliable network conditions. We propose LoRe, a programming model and compiler that automatically verifies developer-supplied safety properties for local-first applications. LoRe combines the declarative data flow of reactive programming with static analysis and verification techniques to precisely determine concurrent interactions that violate safety invariants and to selectively employ strong consistency through coordination where required. We propose a formalized proof principle and demonstrate how to automate the process in a prototype implementation that outputs verified executable code. The authors have presented experimental data and theoretical investigations of turbulence induced by the chemical processes in the compression zone ahead of the blunt body flying in a multiatomic gas medium. The possibility of the flow instability just due to the physicochemical processes in the gas and to the flow curvature irrespective of the boundary conditions on the body′s surface has been substantiated theoretically. Conditions for the flow instability have been found analytically. Two-scale models pose a promising approach in simulating reactive flow and transport in evolving porous media. Classically, homogenised flow and transport equations are solved on the macroscopic scale, while effective parameters are obtained from auxiliary cell problems on possibly evolving reference geometries (micro-scale). Despite their perspective success in rendering lab/field-scale simulations computationally feasible, analytic results regarding the arising two-scale bilaterally coupled system often restrict to simplified models. In this paper, we first derive smooth dependence results concerning the partial coupling from the underlying geometry to macroscopic quantities. Therefore, alterations of the representative fluid domain are described by smooth paths of diffeomorphisms. Exploiting the gained regularity of the effective space- and time-dependent macroscopic coefficients, we present local-in-time existence results for strong solutions to the partially coupled micro-macro system using fixed-point arguments. Significance: Diffuse correlation spectroscopy (DCS) permits non-invasive assessment of skeletal muscle blood flow but may misestimate changes in muscle perfusion. Aim: We aimed to highlight recent evidence that DCS blood flow index (BFI) misestimates changes in muscle blood flow during physiological perturbation and to introduce a novel approach that adjusts BFI for estimated changes in vasodilation. Approach: We measured changes in muscle BFI during quadriceps and forearm exercises using DCS, the latter of which were adjusted for estimated changes in microvascular flow area and then compared to Doppler ultrasound in the brachial artery. Then, we compared adjusted BFI- and arterial spin labeling (ASL) MRI measures of gastrocnemius blood flow during reactive hyperemia and plantar flexion exercise. Results: We observed little-to-no change in quadriceps BFI during maximal-effort exercise. Similarly, forearm BFI was modestly increased during handgrip exercise, but the magnitude was significantly lower than measured by Doppler ultrasound in the brachial artery. However, this difference was ameliorated after adjusting BFI for estimated changes in microvascular flow area. Similar observations were also observed in the gastrocnemius when directly comparing the adjusted BFI values to ASL-MRI. Conclusions: Adjusting BFI for estimated changes in microvascular flow area may improve DCS estimates of muscle blood flow, but further study is needed to validate these methods moving forward. This paper proposes a benchmark study for reactive multiphase multicomponent flow in porous media. Modeling such problem leads to a highly nonlinear coupled system of partial differential equations, ordinary differential equations and algebraic constraints, which requires special numerical treatment. The benchmark consists of five test problems in total (both in 1D and in 2D), with varying degrees of difficulty, designed to verify the algorithms and the codes dedicated to simulating coupled isothermal Hydro-Chemical processes during injection and storage of CO2 in the subsurface. Microfluidic systems with integrated sensors are ideal platforms to study and emulate processes such as complex multiphase flow and reactive transport in porous media, numerical modeling of bulk systems in medicine, and in engineering. Existing commercial optical fibre sensing systems used in integrated microfluidic devices are based on single-core fibres, limiting the spatial resolution in parameter measurements in such application scenarios. Here, we propose a multicore fibre-based pH system for in-situ pH mapping with tens of micrometer spatial resolution in microfluidic devices. The demonstration uses custom laser-manufactured glass microfluidic devices (called further micromodels) consisting of two round ports. The micromodels comprise two lintels for the injection of various pH buffers and an outlet. The two-port system facilitates the injection of various pH solutions using independent pressure pumps. The multicore fibre imaging system provides spatial information about the pH environment from the intensity distribution of fluorescence emission from the sensor attached to the fibre end facet, making use of the cores in the fibre as independent measurement channels. As proof-of-concept, we performed pH measurements in micromodels through obstacles (glass and rock beads), showing that the particle features can be clearly distinguishable from the intensity distribution from the fibre sensor. In this paper, it is proposed that a two-terminal high voltage direct current (HVDC) be integrated into the power system. Line-commutated converter (LCC)-HVDC is used because of its ability to reduce line losses, which improves overall system efficiency. Shunt capacitors also aid in voltage maintenance by compensating for the reactive power demand. In essence, limiting voltage drops in electrical networks promotes a more efficient power transmission and distribution by lowering resistive losses. In power system investigations, it was discovered that the HVDC link and SCB exist separately. So, for the first time, the backtracking search algorithm (BSA) is used to solve the optimal reactive power flow (ORPF) of a power system with a HVDC link and shunt capacitor banks (SCB). Although BSA simulations on a modified IEEE 30 bus yielded successful results, ABC was also utilized for comparing the outcomes of different methods. Overall, three separate cases of the modified IEEE 30 bus system were examined. The occurrence of abrupt dynamical transitions in the macroscopic state of a system has received growing attention. We present experimental evidence for abrupt transition via explosive synchronization in a real-world complex system, namely, a turbulent reactive flow system. In contrast to the paradigmatic continuous transition to a synchronized state from an initially desynchronized state, the system exhibits a discontinuous synchronization transition with a hysteresis. We consider the fluctuating heat release rate from the turbulent flames at each spatial location as locally coupled oscillators that are coupled to the global acoustic field in the confined system. We analyze the synchronization between these two subsystems during the transition to a state of oscillatory instability and discover that explosive synchronization occurs at the onset of oscillatory instability. In this article, we trained a machine learning (ML) model to connect microstructural details of an energetic material formulation to its performance for the purpose of guiding the discovery of new explosive formulations. Our hypothesis was that the algorithm would robustly learn the training data and produce an accurate surrogate model. Specifically, the algorithm learned the relationship between details of the void size distribution (VSD), initiating shock pressure, and the energetic material performance. We used realistic constraints on the VSD and a range of cases were ingested by a physically informed reactive flow model working within a hydrodynamic solver running on high-performance computing resources. The ML algorithm produced a surrogate model that accurately predicted known test points around the parameter space. In addition to the utility of the model and the process used for its development, we noted interesting comparisons between what we, the authors—subject matter experts, would heuristically conclude from the training data and the surrogate model predictions. We detected nuanced details that were missed by the surrogate model; however, these details are not important to an energetic material formulator. We concluded that the algorithm did indeed robustly learn the training data and produce an accurate surrogate model. This paper focuses on the numerical investigation of the transverse hydrogen injection technique in the supersonic airflow on the combustor performance of a scramjet technological demonstrator developed at Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Norte (UFRN). The UFRN's scramjet vehicle was designed to be fully operational at a hypersonic velocity of 2050 m/s (Mach number 6.8), at 30 km of altitude, which provided a temperature of 1156.95 K and supersonic velocity of 1414.39 m/s (Mach number 2.1), at the combustion chamber entrance. Hydrogen was transversally injected into supersonic airflow at a sonic speed of 1318.46 m/s. A set of 2D-RANS simulations of the reactive flow was performed in combination with a simplified chemical kinetics approach based on the finite-rate chemistry model, defined by a one-step global reaction based on Arrhenius expression to combustion modeling. The turbulence was modeled by the k-kl-ω transition model. Different transverse fuel injections with different dimensions and positioning of injectors were evaluated keeping the same inlet conditions: single-injection versus dual-injection modes. A detailed visualization of several flow phenomena, such as the formation of shock waves, and the performance combustion parameters on the combustor surface were discussed. The analyses indicated hydrogen combustion with a predominantly supersonic flow regime. The transversal injection caused the detachment of the boundary layer as indicated by the recirculation flow structures in the neighboring region next to the injectors. Flow analyses indicate that the purely oblique shock trains were established tending to redirect the airflow over the mixing layer and accelerate the hydrogen burning. Nevertheless, the results showed that this was a local effect since the downstream both mixing and combustion efficiency increased. The dual-injection mode proved to be a promising injection method due to the higher global fuel penetration, elevated from 27,9% to 33,8%, and higher combustion efficiency, increased from 10,33% to 21,99%, with reduced addition of total pressure loss, concerning the single-injection case. Additionally, the growth behavior of performance curves showed that an extension of the combustor downstream length can be indicated to maximize combustor performance. • Two modes of hydrogen transverse injection are studied: single versus dual-injection. • A detailed analysis of the supersonic combustion performance is discussed. • The incidence of shockwaves over mixing layer accelerates the hydrogen burning. • Dual-injection mode provided higher global fuel penetration and combustion efficiency. • Combustor length extension is indicated to maximizing the combustion performance. Reactive flow and transport in porous media is topic of intense research since decades. Since dispersion is one of the key parameters in solute transport, its accurate modeling is essential to avoid wrong predictions of flow and transport behavior. In this research, we investigate novel effective dispersion models for reactive transport of electrically charged chemical species in a thin, potentially evolving strip taking into account Taylor–Aris and electroosmotic‐induced dispersion as well as their cross‐coupling effects. We prove positivity of the dispersion coefficient and the existence and uniqueness of strong solutions in the fixed geometry setting. Moreover, we numerically investigate scenarios for both the fixed and evolving geometry situation. The simulation results illustrate the possibility of separating charged species, such that the findings of this study can lead to a better understanding of mixing and separation processes of charged solutes and an improved prediction of breakthrough curves. Finally, we study the limits of vanishing channel width, precipitation layer thickness, and molecular diffusion. We show convergence of the solutions to the corresponding limit cases such as a hyperbolic model or the fixed geometry case. The porous microenvironment of soil offers various environmental functions which are governed by physical and reactive processes. Understanding reactive transport processes in porous media is essential for many natural systems (soils, aquifers, aquatic sediments or subsurface reservoirs) or technological processes (water treatment or ceramic and fuel cell technologies). In particular, in the vadose zone of the terrestrial subsurface the spatially and temporally varying saturation of the aqueous and the gas phase leads to systems that involve complex flow and transport processes as well as reactive transformations of chemical compounds in the porous material. To describe these interacting processes and their dynamics at the pore scale requires a well-suited modelling framework accounting for the proper description of all relevant processes at a high spatial resolution. Here we present P3D-BRNS as a new open-source modelling toolbox harnessing the core libraries of OpenFOAM and coupled externally to the Biogeochemical Reaction Network Simulator (BRNS). The native OpenFOAM volume-of-fluid solver is extended to have an improved representation of the fluid–fluid interface. The solvers are further developed to couple the reaction module which can be tailored for a specific reactive transport simulation. P3D-RBNS is benchmarked against three different flow and reactive transport processes: (1) fluid–fluid configuration in a capillary corner, (2) mass transfer across the fluid–fluid interface and (3) microbial growth with a high degree of accuracy. Our model allows for simulation of the spatio-temporal distribution of all biochemical species in the porous structure (obtained from μ -CT images), for conditions that are commonly found in the laboratory and environmental systems. The paper presents a proposed system that supplies a 400 Hz single-phase onboard grid from the DC onboard bus. This system enables independent compensation of reactive power in the AC grid. Independent control of active and reactive power flow requires the decomposition of current in the grid into active and reactive components. Independent control of active and reactive power requires the use of synchronizers that operate in the dq frame system. If synchronization is performed with a single-phase grid, the transformation of dq requires the virtual quadrature signals. Standard quadrature signal generation systems use a second-order generalized integrator. To improve the dynamics of the system, the paper proposes a new quadrature generator that operates on the basis of trigonometric calculations instead of a second-order integration system. The developed system was implemented in a proportional-resonant current control system. Tests carried out in steady state and in dynamic states related to typical grid disturbances proved significantly better dynamic properties than those of a standard integrator-based system. We consider a one-dimensional (1D) autoignitive reaction wave in a reactive flow system comprising unburned premixed gas entering from the inlet boundary and burned gas exiting from the outlet boundary. In such a 1D system at given initial temperature, it is generally accepted that steady-state solutions can only exist if the inlet velocity matches either the velocity of deflagration wave, as determined by the burning rate eigenvalue in the subsonic regime, or the velocity of detonation wave as dictated by the Chapman–Jouguet condition in the supersonic regime. Based on our recently published theory that ignition is equivalent to deflagration wave with unity Lewis number, we believe that it is possible to redefine deflagration wave from ignition. Thus, we have developed the general concept of "autoignitive reaction wave" and shown theoretically that there are two distinct regions that can maintain steady-state solutions in both the subsonic and supersonic regimes. Based on this theory, we selected inlet velocities that are predicted to yield either steady-state or flashback solutions and conducted numerical simulations. This novel approach revealed that steady-state solutions are possible not only at the velocity of the deflagration wave in the subsonic regime and the velocity of the detonation wave in the supersonic regime, but also across a broad range of inlet velocities. Furthermore, we identify a highly stable autoignitive reaction wave that emerges when the inlet velocity surpasses the velocity of detonation wave, devoid of the typical shock wave commonly seen in detonation waves. This "supersonic autoignitive reaction wave" lacks the instability-inducing detonation cell structure, suggesting the potential for the development of novel combustor concepts. Turbulence-radiation interaction (TRI) arises from the highly non-linear coupling between fluctuations of radiative intensity and fluctuations of temperature and chemical composition of the medium. It is well-recognized that neglecting turbulent fluctuations of the latter scalars when computing the mean radiation field, as is standard in Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) simulations, leads to mispredictions of the radiative heat fluxes and the radiant fraction in as much as one order of magnitude. Conversely, the importance of TRI in large eddy simulations (LES)--i.e., the effect of subfilter-scale (SFS) fluctuations on the filtered radiation field--has only started to be investigated in the last decade. The present text reviews the knowledge gathered so far on the subject. The instantaneous and the spatially filtered forms of the radiative transfer equation (RTE) are presented, and the unresolved correlations resulting from the filtering operation are discussed. Models for accounting for SFS-TRI are surveyed, with the most popular ones (namely, probability density function-based methods and empirical approximations) reviewed in detail. An appraisal of the literature on the importance and characteristics of SFS-TRI is performed, with special attention given to turbulent jet diffusion flames and pool fires, which are the two configurations for which SFS-TRI has been studied the most. A study has been made of the flow of a non-Newtonian polymer medium in a plane channel and of heat transfer in it with boundary conditions of the first kind for small Reynolds numbers and a large Péclet number with the Ellis rheological model with a viscosity dependent on the temperature, pressure, and degree of chemical conversion of the medium. Consideration was given to the flow of a high-viscosity medium with chemical reactions leading to an abrupt increase in its viscosity for whose mathematical description the authors used a model that included the kinetic chemical-reaction equation and the energy equation with a dissipative term. Significant influence of various factors on the formation and rate of growth of the solidified wall layer in such flow has been shown. The acoustic characteristic of swirled and non-swirled turbulent inverse diffusion flame (IDF) for hydrogen-methane fuel is experimentally investigated with variation in Reynolds numbers (Re air) and equivalence ratios (Φ). For maintaining adequate working environment, noise characterization of hydrogen-methane fuel IDF is essential. Comparison of sound level indicates significant alteration in acoustic characteristics with change in Re air , Φ and swirl. The swirling IDF is noisier than the non-swirling IDF at the same Re air and Φ. The sound level increases by 9.9% for swirling and 10.2% for non-swirling IDFs with a surge in Re air. The variation of Φ (0.6 ≤ Φ ≤ 1.4) indicates that the noise of IDF with swirl is higher (an increase of 13.14%) than non-swirling IDF (an increase of 1.43%). Shearing of flow induced by swirl dominates sound generation. For swirling IDF, the rise in sound level is 3.67% when methane is blended with H 2 from 0% to 10%. • Effect of Swirl, momentum and hydrogen addition on acoustic of IDF is analysed. • Flow shear due to swirl increases noise levels. • Hydrogen addition enhances combustion dynamics and thus radiates large sounds. • Sound level of swirled IDF with hydrogen enhances by about 4%. The objective of the presented paper is to verify economically justified levels of reactive energy compensation in the distribution network in the new market conditions, including the extensive use of smart metering systems, new types of load, or distributed generation. The proposed methodology is based on the minimization of annual costs of losses caused by the flow of reactive energy to the supplied loads through the equivalent resistance of the distribution system determined on the basis of statistical energy losses in this network. The costs of losses are compared to the costs of using compensating devices expressed by the levelized costs of reactive energy generation. The results are the relations describing the optimal annual average value of the tgφ factor to be maintained by customers to optimize the cost of loss of the distribution network caused by reactive energy flows. The dependence of the optimal tgφ value on the analyzed load and network parameters is also discussed. The resulting optimal tgφ levels should be considered in the tariffication process of services offered by distribution system operators to improve capacity and limit the costs of power network operation due to reactive energy transmission. Optimal power dispatch is essential to improve the power system's safety, stability, and optimal operation. The present research proposes a multi-objective optimization methodology to solve the real and reactive power dispatch problem by minimizing the active power losses and generation costs based on mixed-integer nonlinear programming (MINLP) using the epsilon constraint method and fuzzy satisficing approach. The proposed methodology was tested on the IEEE 30-bus system, in which each objective function was modeled and simulated independently to verify the results with what is obtained via Digsilent Power Factory and then combined, which no longer allows for the simulation of Digsilent Power Factory. One of the main contributions was demonstrating that the proposed methodology is superior to the one available in Digsilent Power Factory, since this program only allows for the analysis of single-objective problems. This paper is concerned with the analysis of the mixed convective magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) flow of a reactive couple stress multi-walled carbon nanotube − Ag / C 2 H 6 O 2 hybrid nanofluid in a porous vertical channel subjected to quadratic thermal radiation along with a uniform inclined magnetic field applied to the channel walls. The flow is driven by the pressure gradient force and the buoyancy force, which is modeled based on the nonlinear Boussinesq approximation. The temperature-dependent reaction rate of the reactant molecule is derived using the Arrhenius law. The momentum and energy equations that govern the system are modeled in consideration of slip and convective conditions. The governing equations are non-dimensionalized by applying relevant dimensionless parameters and are solved using the homotopy analysis method (HAM). To analyze the irreversibilities in the system, the entropy generation number and the Bejan number are defined. Different important physical parameters developing in the system are considered for analysis, and their effects are scrutinized on the velocity and temperature profiles along with entropy generation. The emphasis is given to the concentration of nanoparticles along with the parameters arising due to the reactions of the fluid, buoyancy force, inclined magnetic field, thermal radiation, and porous material. The analysis reveals that the velocity and temperature of the fluid lowers with a higher concentration of nanoparticles, radiation parameter, and Hartmann number, whereas develops for the higher slip parameters and inclination of the magnetic field. The entropy generation rate increases with rising slip parameters and depletes for higher nanoparticle concentration, radiation parameter, Hartmann number, and inclination angle. The irreversibility in the system remains dominant due to heat transfer with higher Frank-Kameneskii and activation energy parameters, Hartmann number, and angle of inclination. Carbonatites, carbon-rich magmatic rocks, are thought to form by low-degree partial melting of a relatively carbon-poor mantle followed by protracted differentiation and immiscibility. However, the nature of parental magmas and the characteristics of the early stages of differentiation that shape the subsequent crystal and liquid lines of descent remain poorly constrained. To provide new constraints, deep crustal cumulative xenoliths from Oldoinyo Lengai (East African Rift), the only active volcano erupting carbonatite magmas, were studied. We use major and volatile elements in primitive olivine-hosted melt inclusions, as well as major and trace elements in crystals, to reconstruct the conditions of formation and evolution of cumulates (pressure, temperature, composition). Xenoliths are composed of olivine, diopside, phlogopite, amphibole and accessory minerals. One remarkable feature is the presence of diopside and phlogopite oikocrysts enclosing roundish olivine chadacrysts. Melt inclusions do not have vapor bubble and have major element compositions resembling olivine nephelinite (7–10 wt % MgO after corrections for post-entrapment crystallization). The absence of vapor bubbles implies that the concentrations of volatile components (i.e. CO2, H2O, S) were not compromised by well-known post-entrapment volatile loss into the vapor bubble. Based on the melt inclusion study by SIMS, the volatile concentrations in olivine nephelinite magmas (early stage of differentiation) at Oldoinyo Lengai were 20–130 ppm S, 390–4500 ppm F, 50–540 ppm Cl, up to 6074 ppm CO2 and up to 1.5 wt % H2O. According to the calculated CO2-H2O saturation pressures and geophysical data, xenoliths from Embalulu Oltatwa document a mushy reservoir in the lower crust. Primitive olivine nephelinite melt inclusions have higher H2O contents than olivine nephelinite lavas from other further South volcanoes from the North Tanzanian Divergence (0.2–0.5 wt % H2O), suggesting that the lithospheric mantle source beneath the Oldoinyo Lengai is more hydrated than the mantle beneath the rest of North Tanzanian Divergence. We present a model in which resorption features observed in olivine chadacrysts, together with the LREE enrichments in olivine grains, are the consequences of reactive porous flows in a deep crustal mushy reservoir. We provide constraints on the major, trace and volatile element composition of the parental magmas of carbonatite series and demonstrate with Rhyolite-MELTS models that phonolites and related natrocarbonatites from Oldoinyo Lengai can be produced by protracted differentiation of olivine nephelinite melts. This study presents a new single-phase transformer-less grid-connected inverter based on a six-phase interleaved dc/dc converter as a suitable topology for PV applications. The proposed topology consists of a dc input and multi-output in the dc-link side which results in production of six levels per half cycle. The voltage of the inverter at output side is 7-level that is injected into the network. The voltage of PV panels is low and this problem is solved by increasing the voltage level in the interleaved converter. Besides, the input current ripple of the interleaved dc/dc converter is very low which causes to improve the quality of the injected current into the grid through a PV panel. For control of the power switches and active/reactive power flows, the model predictive control (MPC) method is applied. The proposed system is capable of creating different voltage levels in step-up/down at the dc-link side and this will make it suitable for working in a wide range of power in the grid-tied. Besides, the total voltage blocking (TVB) of the power switches at the inverter side is greatly decreased. Consequently, the efficiency of the proposed system is high. To prove the accuracy of theoretical calculations, the proposed topology for a 900 W prototype at an operation of 50 Hz is built and tested in the laboratory. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
