Race has been a market force in society for centuries. Still, the question of what constitutes focused and sustainable consumer research engagement with race remains opaque. We propose a guide for scholars and scholarship that extends the current canon of race in consumer research toward understanding race, racism, and related racial dynamics as foundational to global markets and central to consumer research efforts. We discuss the nature, relevance, and meaning of race for consumer research and offer a thematic framework that critically categorizes and synthesizes extant consumer research on race along the following dimensions: (1) racial structuring of consumption and consumer markets, (2) consumer navigation of racialized markets, and (3) consumer resistance and advocacy movements. This article examines the concept of resistance through an analysis of Theodor W. Adorno's work as a public intellectual. It categorizes resistance into different types based on its object and discusses the subject and impetus of resistance. The article explores the perspectives of Hannah Arendt and Adorno on resistance, as well as Caygill's argument that resistance should be seen as a capacity rather than specific acts. It also delves into Adorno's critique of late capitalist society and his theory and practice of resistance. The topic of imaginative resistance attracted considerable philosophical attention in recent years. Yet, with a few exceptions, no historical investigation of the phenomenon has been carried out. This paper amends this gap in the literature by constructing a Humean and a Kantian explanation. The main contributions of this historical analysis to this debate are to make room for emotions in explanations of resistance reactions and to upset the polarization between rival accounts by suggesting that our possible responses to morally flawed works can vary. Within the framework of the enlargement methodological proposed by the thinker Arturo Roig, we expose the need for a Latin American symbolic or semiotic and we unravel Roigean symbol theory, in its double facet: axiology and normativity. Then, we reflect on the distinction between signification and meaning that allows us to open ourselves to the metaphorical system implicit in words as semantic marks. Subsequently, we explain the characteristics of the symbolic universe: conflict, discursive dualism and reversal, in order to show the Roigean interpretation of Caliban as an example of reversal of the symbolic function. Subsequently, we delve into the feminist interpretation of the Sycorax figure as a symbol of resistance and liberation. Latin America has been the backdrop of colonial extraction, military dictatorships and armed conflicts, while it has also been characterised by its strong social movements, political organising and solidarity. Although these phenomena are gendered, diverse and intersectional gendered experiences have been insufficiently recognised in academic research. This article introduces a collection that questions mainstream understandings of how gendered violence against cisgender women and other feminised bodies, including people with diverse gender identities, expressions and sexual orientations in Latin America can be understood, and what we can learn from resistance against gendered violence. How do mothers deal with chronic violence and the constant presence of guns in their neighborhoods? How do they build situated meaning and discursive practices out of their experiences and relationships with armed actors? We compare the experiences of women in two poor and working-class neighborhoods in Caracas. Through this comparative ethnographic project, we aim to show how, in the midst of state-sponsored depredation and with an overwhelming presence of guns in their lives, women use their cultural roles as mothers to perform everyday forms of resistance vis-à-vis the different armed actors that impose their presence in the barrios. In the mothers’ daily struggles, dramatic discursive actions—from more openly oppositional ones, such as shouting, scolding, and talking, to more hidden ones, such as both “circulating gossip” and “captive gossip,” to more vulnerable ones, such as whispering—are main resources in the micropolitics of their neighborhoods. Our findings suggest that strategies are context dependent and most likely vary according to numerous factors, including the history of civic organizing, policing practices, and the type of armed actor with whom they cohabitate in their neighborhood. There are many biblical episodes in which people are compelled by an explicit or implicit threat of force, which is one definition of coercion, yet the issue of coercion has not yet been systematically explored for Hebrew Bible narrative. Examining the phenomenon of coercion across biblical narrative, this study asks how coercion is viewed and valued in the Hebrew Bible, what determines whether coercion is punished or rewarded, and what the theological significance is of this judgment. Despite the fact that impoliteness research has spanned over three decades, it has been conceptualized persistently in terms of politeness as its binary opposite. In this paper, we endeavor to provide a theoretical framework for studying impoliteness as significant communicative practice. We aim to introduce Levinas' face as an alternative to Goffman's face and identify impoliteness with Levinas' face for the reason that Levinas' face, featuring absolute difference, can only be expressed through the discourse of resistance which manifests in various phenomena commonly categorized as impoliteness. We also argue that impoliteness is essentially the discourse of the authentic Self whose uncompromising difference, though potentially resulting in conflictive phenomena, facilitates understanding between individuals, not as actors, but as unique beings with their individualities and differences. We further contend that impoliteness is ethical in that the discourse of resistance does not aim for power but calls for respect for individual difference as well as responsibility for the Other in an effort to seek equality in human relations which are fundamentally power-laden and unequal. We also provide a case study to apply our theoretical construction of impoliteness to a literary classic, namely, Herman Melville's "Bartleby, the Scrivener" to illustrate our main points. In the late seventeenth century the Spanish colonial administration began to issue decrees that sought to implement the familiar colonial policies of entrada, reducción, and misión within an unconquered region of the Province of Honduras called by the Spanish Leán y Mulia. After a few short-lived settlements in the early part of the eighteenth century, a new wave of Franciscans began attempts to convert the Xicaque of Leán y Mulia in 1747–54. In 1751 the onset of a smallpox epidemic at the Franciscan misiones became the watershed event that defined subsequent interaction between the Spanish and the Xicaque and, because of this, defined Spanish policy within the region of Leán y Mulia. A fear of contracting the disease would subsequently linger in the memory of the Xicaque at the misiones and in Leán y Mulia. This dread of disease and sickness predetermined subsequent social relationships between the Xicaque and the Spanish settlers who sought their indoctrination and acculturation in subsequent decades of the eighteenth and nineteenth century with no success. In 19th century England, fathers were considered the owner of the family estate where they were to decide everything regarding their children, but the children did not always welcome these decisions. This study uncovers, with the help of comprehensive and interdisciplinary supporting literary, social, and historical resources about and from the 19th century, Eliot's presentation of the resistance of these children, the conflicts they have with their fathers, and finds out if the resistance of these children is justifiable in the context of the period. It also explores how these children come back to reconcile with their fathers emotionally and physically. It is concluded that all these children are inclined to leave home because they have conflicts with their fathers; however, they have to return to their roots, and therefore also to their fathers and embrace them. The article cites different forms of opposition to the U.S. Supreme Court. History shows records of presidential defiance of federal court orders, including Thomas Jefferson's threat of retaliation to any judicial order to install opposition party member William Marbury as justice of peace in Washington, D.C., and Franklin Delano Roosevelt's threat of defiance of challenges to his decision to take the U.S. off the gold standard. Ordinary noncompliance by policymakers to judicial decisions include use of workarounds, reliance on political enforcement, and haggling with courts over the terms of judicial demands. It also suggests that judicial authority in the U.S. is not absolute, but exists within politically constructed bounds, not between the rule of law and its absence.

This article explores an insufficiently problematised aspect of conventional Dirty Hands (DH) analyses: the suggestion that such analyses are animated by a 'heroic' and 'aristocratic' flavour. In doing so, the article suggests that the problem of DH should not be merely seen as a lamentable, sparse privilege of the powerful—those who, in certain temporarily static situations, are compelled to act immorally on behalf of the democratic state, for the sake of realpolitik, the common good, or the dictates of justice. Rather, it argues that some manifestations of that phenomenon might also constitute a habitually powerful 'weapon' in the pharetra of the weak—the excluded, the marginalised or the dispossessed who are compelled to act immorally, systematically and covertly, against the democratic state, for the sake of resisting the injustices they encounter in their daily lives. By engaging with the philosophical literature on 'everyday resistance', and African–American social and political history—specifically, daily, evasive acts of subversion in the Jim Crow South—the article thus elaborates a novel account of DH-as-a-weapon-of-the-weak and offers a new perspective on scholarly debates about the ethics of resistance. Specifically, it enhances our understanding of the potentialities of resistance in the context of democratic politics without reproducing troubling myths of heroic agency: it illustrates how certain practices of everyday resistance gain their strength by virtue of their connection to the moral vices of subterfuge, and betrayal on the one hand, and their implication in forms of complicity on the other. Indigenous peoples continue to challenge Canadian colonial policies through nonroutine acts of resistance. Sustained scholarly attention on the frequency and characteristics of Indigenous resistance has dropped precipitously, with the time span of this scholarship typically ending by the early 2000s. Research on more recent acts of resistance is directed to small- n case studies. This research note examines Indigenous resistance in Canada between 2010 and 2020 as reported by news articles from the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) to identify key characteristics of salient Indigenous resistance: What issue areas were the subject of resistance movements? Which Indigenous communities or groups contributed to acts of resistance? What strategies were employed? The research note's findings suggest that salient acts of resistance rarely result in immediate policy change from the state; instead, resistance has transformative potential to develop Indigenous governance that departs from settler-colonial state processes. The sagebrush biome is a dryland region in the western United States experiencing rapid transformations to novel ecological states. Threat‐based approaches for managing anthropogenic and ecosystem threats have recently become prominent, but successfully mitigating threats depends on the ecological resilience of ecosystems. We used a spatially explicit approach for prioritizing management actions that combined a threat‐based model with models of resilience to disturbance and resistance to annual grass invasion. The threat‐based model assessed geographic patterns in sagebrush ecological integrity (SEI) to identify core sagebrush, growth opportunity, and other rangeland areas. The resilience and resistance model identified ecologically relevant climate and soil water availability indicators from process‐based ecohydrological models. The SEI areas and resilience and resistance indicators were consistent—the resilience and resistance indicators showed generally positive relationships with the SEI areas. They also were complementary—SEI areas provided information on intact sagebrush areas and threats, while resilience and resistance provided information on responses to disturbances and management actions. The SEI index and resilience and resistance indicators provide the basis for prioritizing conservation and restoration actions and determining appropriate strategies. The difficulty and time required to conserve or restore SEI areas increase as threats increases and resilience and resistance decrease. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Ways of knowing in social sciences and educational research are sculpted by normative knowing of ways that are rooted in prescriptive histories of positivist and qualitative traditions. In this paper, by subscribing to what St. Pierre and Lather initiated as the "postqualitative movement", we turn from tradition to re-search research praxis and nominate "Langar" (a Sikh cultural practice of congregational cooking and consumption) as an alternative site of knowledge creation and postqualitative resistance. We approximate Langar to establish a "research commune" in which we prepare a metaphorical meal of knowledge and argue that with its salient openness, enriching philosophy and non-hierarchical texture, Langar can inform educational research and bring into its fold some intriguing philosophical and processual dimensions that originate from varied cultural contexts. This can, herald into educational research, a newness that can potentially re-negotiate boundaries, re-order research norms and interrupt hierarchies to foster creative ways of knowing. ReVisioning Fitness is a research project and community of practice (CoP) working to reconceptualize "fitness" through a radical embrace of difference (e.g., trans, non-binary, queer, Black, people of colour, disabled, and/or fat, thick/thicc, curvy, plus sized), and a careful theorising of inclusion and access. Our collaborative and arts-based work mounts collective resistance against the dominant power relations that preclude bodymind differences within so-called "fitness" spaces. In this work, we build queer, crip, and thick/thicc alliances by centring relational and difference-affirming approaches to fitness, fostering a radical CoP that supports dissent to be voiced, access intimacies to form, and capacitating effects of body-becoming pedagogies to be set in motion. In this article, we consider how conditions of possibility both co-created and inherited by researchers, collaborators, and the research context itself contributed to what unfolded in our project and art making (multimedia storytelling). By a radical CoP, we mean that we mobilise a more relational and difference-affirming notion of CoP than others have described, which often has involved the reification of sameness and the stabilisation of hierarchies. In 1789, the brothers Ivan and Stepan Bashagurov escaped from prison in Perm. Before their capture two years later, they not only robbed houses and raided boats on the Kama but also worked as wage laborers and traveled to St. Petersburg. Their story does not fit into the traditional understanding of banditry in early modern Russia as a social phenomenon reflecting resistance against the state and nobility. The brothers were neither champions of the poor nor enjoyed sympathy and support in the countryside, as is commonly assumed. Through a detailed reconstruction of their case, this article underscores the seasonal and opportunistic nature of their banditry as well as the complexity of the interactions between the bandits and other members of society, which were shaped by acquaintanceship and kinship, on the one hand, and the Russian government's punitive policies against those who harbored criminals, on the other. Police forces are increasing their use of artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities for security purposes. However, citizens are often aware and cautious about advanced policing capabilities which can impact negatively on the perceived legitimacy of policing efforts and police more generally. This study explores citizens' subjective perspectives to police use by AI, including tensions between security, privacy, and resistance. Using Q methodology with 43 participants in the UK, Netherlands, and Germany we identified five distinct perspectives towards AI use by police forces. The five perspectives illustrate the complex, diverse viewpoints citizens exhibit with respect to AI use by police and highlight that citizens' perspectives are more complex than often portrayed. Our findings offer theoretical and practical implications for public engagement around general versus personal safety, privacy and potentials for moral dilemmas and counter-reactions. In this paper, we use semi-structured interviews with 35 asylum-seeking women to elicit a narrative of their forced migration journey which included a stop in Turkey, a perilous sea crossing facilitated by smugglers and a stay in a European Union borderland, Greece. We explore their experiences with a focus on the adversities they faced, especially gender-based violence, woven in the broader violence of mobility under restrictive border and asylum regimes. Their interaction with the environment reveals a range of responses of conformity with, and resistance to, unequal social relations and discriminatory cultural practices. We conceptualize these responses as resilience, a process in the making, shaped by practices - thoughts, emotions and embodied acts - rather than an achieved state. We understand resilience as a process built through the use of personal but also communal resources, according to the social ecology model. In this paper, we focus on the individual resilient responses, the "resilient moves" of women in the refugee context of the Eastern Mediterranean. At the same time, the women's identifying and naming of the hardships they face point to the social structures that these hardships are rooted in, thus requiring interventions in social policies and institutional practices. Given that community colleges enroll most of the undocumented and Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) students across the nation, there is an economic and moral imperative to understand how the sociopolitical environment has shifted educational opportunities for undocumented and DACA students. This paper unveils how institutional agents use their agency to shape the college community college experiences of undocumented and DACA students. Findings include institutional agents' perspectives on navigating challenges, resistance, and virtues in the current sociopolitical climate. Recommendations are discussed to enhance humanizing and holistic institutional support for DACA and undocumented college students, as well as a proposed undocuservingness framework. An honest reckoning must begin with acknowledging that historically marginalized groups, including women, do not exist in a neutral leadership space, and sporadic movements are not sufficient to bring about change. Leaders who emerge from marginalized spaces have learned how to navigate against the odds, often using defiance, and employ leadership skills in ways that those in the center may not have developed and that have a uniquely important role and purpose in higher education. In addition to defiance, it is equally important for leaders, especially those who identify as women, to identify and claim what they deserve and desire as leaders. Members of the Rohingya ethnos must navigate the Myanmar state's "blunt biopolitics"—a mode of regulation that neither protects nor intensively knows, but rather uses violence to govern, the populations rather than individuals it takes as its object. As classic resistance is ineffective against the excessive sovereign force activated in blunt biopolitics, Rohingya communities across Asia enact strategies of refusal—what this article theorizes as methods for navigating regimes of biopolitical governmentality. As Rohingya refuse literal erasure to persist as a population, that Rohingya identity has become an amorphous object as members manuever between rejection of and assent to their symbolic effacement. They reformulate the ethnic category's contours, both consciously/directly (in response to changing dynamics that their refusal has generated) and indirectly: not only as they enter and exit the ethnos, mimicking spatial peregrinations amid mass expulsion, but also in terms of disjunctive affiliations in which people simultaneously inhabit positions of identification with and refusal of "Rohingya." Refusal hence opens up a consideration of the collective refusing subject that acknowledges that it is simultaneously hypostatized (qua collective actor) while also malleable (qua its ever-mutating constituents and self-conceptions). Summoning centuries of resistance to violence and oppression with each drum stroke, the Barrileras del 8M performed the sicá bomba piece "No me va a dar" in front of Puerto Rico's Department of Labor on November 25, 2020, as part of a protest against femicide on the island. Well integrated into Puerto Rican popular culture, this Afro-Puerto Rican music, song, and dance form born from a resistance to slavery logically embodies the Barrileras' denunciation of domestic violence. Yet, until recently, an all-women group playing the barriles was, in itself, a subversive act. Despite its insurgent roots, bomba is a traditionally gendered form. This article traces groundbreaking steps taken by women activists such as Marién Torres López, Julia Caridad Cepeda Martínez, Denise Solís, and María José Montijo to transform bomba's gendered practices. It first describes Marién Torres López's work in Puerto Rico with her Taller Tambuyé, Inc., Grupo Ausuba, Encuentro de Tambores, and the Barrileras del 8M. Moving to the diaspora, this paper then evaluates how Julia Caridad Cepeda Martínez and Denise Solís have queered bomba with their Taller Bombalele in the San Francisco Bay Area, and concludes with an analysis of Oakland-based singer-songwriter María José Montijo's bomba "Huracán," which warns that the femicide crisis on the island has escalated to a critical level. Citing the work of these exemplary women, this article demonstrates how they have resisted patriarchy in bomba and simultaneously used this cultural expression as a medium to denounce gender discrimination and violence. It delves into Kiara's film "Scouse Republic," which examines radical possibilities for healing through psychedelic mushrooms, and discusses their personal experiences and the need for decolonial practices within the Western psychedelic scene.

Despite the contemporary notion that government and opposition parties' agendas in the long run positively influence each other, there are reasons to argue that different dynamics are at play as well. More specifically, previous studies neglected to address the short-term, transient interplay between parties' agendas (within a year) while dominantly focussing on what governing parties talk about (and not on what they actually decide). Therefore, this article focuses on this short-term dynamic by hypothesising that governing parties (in cabinet meetings) and opposing parties (in parliamentary questions) feature issues that are undisclosed by the other side in the recent past, and as such create a negative issue attention influence. In other words, if the government places a certain issue high on its cabinet agenda, it will cause the opposition to avoid that issue in their parliamentary questions in the following months and vice versa. By analysing issue-coded data from the government's cabinet meetings and opposition questions in Croatia (1992–2017) across multiple issues, I can provide evidence that supports these hypotheses. As such, this study contributes to the current knowledge on the relationship between government and opposition issue attention by offering another take on their interaction from a negative influence perspective. Zirconia materials are commonly utilized in biomedical applications due to their esthetic appearance, mechanical properties, and biocompatibility. In this study, composites of 12 mol% Ce-TZP reinforced with a total of 25 vol% alumina and in situ formed manganese cerium hexaaluminate MnCeAl 11 O 19 were produced by a mixing and milling method, shaped by slip casting and pressureless sintered in air at 1500–1550 °C. Microstructure, mechanical properties, phase composition, and low temperature degradation resistance (LTD) were determined. Plain alumina toughened zirconia and a mixed composition containing 15% MnCeA6 combined the highest bending strength of > 650 MPa and highest fracture toughness of 11 MPa√ m. Balancing of contributions by different toughening effects assumes an underestimation of the transformation toughening effect. Evidence of a net synergetic effect between hexaaluminate reinforcement and transformation toughening was not observed. High amounts of manganese cerium hexaaluminate platelets lead to a substantial reduction in mechanical properties. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Surprise challenges philosophy. Transcendental thinking, what some consider to be the core of philosophy. Surprise indeed emblematizes the empirical, i.e. the resistance to philosophy, its dissociation. Philosophy has a problem with surprise. Unless it requires another philosophy than meaning or reason. A philosophy able to enter into an alliance of a new kind between transcendantal and empirical, beyond dissociation, beyond resistance. In this contribution, I would like to show how the phenomenon of surprise allows the birth of a new relation to transcendantal, either of disjonction, nor of conjonction. Even if it means radically changing it. And how surprise may then receive a new philosophical credit. It will become the corner stone of a phenomenology of a new kind: an empirical phenomenology. The article presents the discussion on critical intersections between creative practice and algorithmic culture. Topics include coupling of facial recognition technologies with machine learning being automating and expanding the efficacy of surveillance tactics; and gap in research and the need to further develop methods for algorithmic critique and possible resistance serves as the point of departure.

This article points out the need to talk about the political society, or the politics and resistances, of subaltern groups in Eastern Europe and Eurasia. Existing literature frames diversity marginalized struggles as civil society struggles or decries the weakness of donor-driven, disembedded civil societies, reproducing the understanding of political life in the region in terms of absences, voids and deficiencies. Challenging this subsumption or dismissal of subaltern struggles, I advance two arguments. First, I argue against broadening the civil society concept to include various subaltern struggles as this approach risks overwriting differences between those groups that mobilize as rights-bearing citizens and the ones that are not recognized or treated as civil society. Instead, I propose acknowledging the historically and spatially contingent character of civil society and the defining role of the state and other actors in shaping which struggles fall within or beyond institutional and discursive frameworks of legality and legitimacy. Second, I argue that Patra Chatterjee's concept of 'political society' can serve better as a meta-vocabulary to account for a diversity of struggles shunted as backwards, premodern and uncivilized, and to refocus research from what is absent to what is present, towards understanding counter-hegemonic discourses and practices. In 'a world that has been built to accommodate only some' (Ahmed 2019: 221), how do those engaging in public protest or experiencing housing insecurity make use of the material environment? In this article, we examine adaptation of the built environment in four sites in Melbourne, Australia. Everyday urban places are composed of myriad 'small things' acted upon as affordances for survival within structures of silencing and dispossession for the urban undercommons. We draw from cultural, spatial and atmospheric criminology to inform an ethnographic method focusing on materiality, use, adaptability and sensory composition. In so doing, our research contributes to criminological understanding of the significance of 'minor' events, activities and encounters in everyday life by proposing that 'small things in everyday places' constitute potentialities for defiance and resistance. Medical experiences offer valuable insight into how medical power can operate to subjugate bodies and subvert wills, revealing the patriarchal nature of institutional medical practice. Such revelations can inform anthropological understandings of power, resistance, and refusal at the intersection of gender and large bureaucratic structures, such as the medical industrial complex. This article explores the subversion of maternal will in the context of cesarean birth and practices around vaginal birth after cesarean (VBAC) as a form of resistance and refusal of biomedical power. Cesarean sections are the most common major surgical procedure in the United States, with one in every three births delivered surgically. For many birthing people, cesarean delivery was neither desired nor expected. Through the birth story narratives of 25 predominantly white women who pursued VBAC, this article proposes the concept of maternal vanishing to describe the process by which birthing people are disempowered during birth. I argue that women who pursued VBAC were engaged in an attempt to reconstitute themselves in subsequent births through a series of tactics that, in some ways, replicate hegemonic notions of neoliberal subjectivity and medical consumerism at the same they resist and refuse them. Drawing on observation and interviews conducted in community centres in three deprived neighbourhoods in France, this article examines the conditions required for making a commitment to anti-discrimination activism. In theory, the experience of racial discrimination provides reasons for action. However, mobilization against racism is by no means the norm. This qualitative study shows that forms of resistance that value horizontal, inclusive relationships and quiet activism, encourage people to make a commitment despite their reluctance to do so. This brief response concerns Arash Abizadeh's recently proposed four-place 'grammar' of agential social power: that the social power of an agent, V, with respect to outcome type O consists in V's capacity to effect outcomes of type O 'with the assistance of agents X, despite the resistance of agents Y '. Among other problems, this grammar implies that all agential power is social power. I propose, in place of Abizadeh's grammar, that V 's social power with respect to O consists in V 's capacity to effect O with the assistance of X, thereby affecting patients Y. Among other things, this grammar goes further than Abizadeh's in rejecting the tradition, owing to Max Weber, that holds that all social power is power to overcome resistance. Resistance against tourism development has become a key analytical domain among tourism researchers. Yet, little attention has been paid to understanding online resistance against tourism development as a discursive phenomenon. This inquiry provides a discourse analytical study regarding an online petition against a large-scale infrastructure project in the Austrian Alps. Employing an analytical framework of discursive objects, subjects, and concepts, the study investigates the justification strategies of activists, posted on the online petition platform. The study finds that activists' rationales are embedded within an overarching degrowth discourse. The conflict exists between the opposing subjectivities of activists and project initiators with nature as their primary discursive object. Activist rationales were found to criticize the growth imperative of capitalism in broad strokes, rather than directly addressing the project and its proponents. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

As a critical counter-reading of Michel de Certeau's classic text, The Practice of Everyday Life, this essay argues that today, in the age of neo-liberal biopolitics, it is death that is quotidian. While "life" itself now figures as the paratactical and memetic ruse of our dominant order, the essay problematizes conventional forms of tactical resistance, claiming that resistance is often complicitous and has been co-opted in advance. It is death that must henceforth inform our struggles to make (a) life in the ruins. This article examines the collaboration trials of French photographers André Zucca (1944–1945) and Robert Delhay (1947–1949) within the context of the postwar French state's attempts to punish collaboration and rehabilitate the French press. Paying attention to the interpretation of photographs as evidence, I argue that within the post–Liberation French courtroom, photographic evidence became crucial to narrating collaboration and resistance as a means of gaining re-acceptance into the profession and escaping legal charges. However, photographs proved too complicated to clearly prove either collaboration. Photographers disputed the charges against them by offering new interpretations of their photographs. These new readings were rooted in a postwar visual culture that had been saturated with photographs as historical evidence of Nazi atrocities, French victimization, and resistance. This article details how the collection and display of photographic evidence in these court proceedings informed the emergence of a postwar photographic press steeped in résistancialisme. This article focuses on the reflections of 1,015 sports fans collected via an online survey from June 2017 to September 2017 regarding their experience and perception of risk, security, and terrorism when attending an elite live sport event. Drawing on the conceptual risk society framework of Ulrich Beck, the results outline how some fans demonstrate defiance, resistance, and pragmatism towards the risk of terrorism whilst nearly one-third of fans demonstrate tenets of emotion, fear and risk aversion. The majority of fans accept additional measures of security and surveillance as a means of protecting their safety, but others resist this as overly excessive and intrusive and argue it negatively impacts on their experience. Faced with the expressiveness of Afro-Brazilian literature as a culture of the borders, and its functioning as a symbol of denunciation, writers such as Conceição Evaristo reflect in their writings the voice of black women and the fight against social injustices, revealing a place of resistance to the African diaspora and a literary perspective of authorship. From this point of view, the issue of racism and the need to build an ethnic equality are considered. The article is based on the multimodality of language and on the semiotics of cultures to propose the literary reading of two poems by the aforementioned writer, whose performative, semiotic voice makes the symbolic of language emerge in the textual materiality, whose meanings arouse the human imagination, allowing the reader, to reconstruct the African diaspora and to perceive the authorship of black women committed to the trajectory of their people. We highlight the importance of discussing ethnic-racial relations Law 10.639 which make the teaching of Afro-Brazilian History and Culture mandatory in Brazilian education networks, especially public education, with socioeconomic characteristics of exclusion, requiring approaches that make it possible to break with the paradigm of socially crystallized racism in favor of the development of critical thinking and the recognition of movements for the redemocratization of socio-educational public policies. Some have argued that Indigenous and European Americans learned much from each other along the border. This paper examines the fate of the influence of Indigenous philosophy by considering the work of Henry David Thoreau. First, it summarizes the argument of Native Pragmatism: Rethinking the Roots of American Philosophy about the influence of Indigenous thought on American philosophy. In the second section, it discusses American philosophies of resistance in relation to the process of colonization. In the third, it considers the later work of Thoreau as an example of the declining influence of Native thought on nineteenth‐century American philosophy. On one hand, Thoreau adopted a philosophy of place that seems to emerge directly from his experiences with Indigenous Americans. Millenarian movements used to be regarded as native reactions to enormous social disruptions caused by colonial intrusion, doomed to failure and at best a step on the way to more "modern" forms of collective social resistance. In fact, they have both pre-dated and outlasted colonialism, featuring in ethnic politics across Asia and beyond to this day. Nevertheless, its encounter with modernity has not left millenarianism unchanged, as is shown in this article's historical case study. A comprehensive timeline and mapping of past and present Hmong-Miao millenarian activity highlights several enduring features including a context of economic and political crisis, their transnational nature, the prevalence of manipulation and/or coercion, and specific cultural symbols within supernatural predictions. Equally important are the historical developments, from pan-ethnic to mono-ethnic and from violent to peaceful (but still threatening to political and religious authorities), reflecting historical trends of ethnicisation and territorialisation. The mechanics of such reproductions and transformations are then unpacked, before the Hmong-Miao experience is compared with millenarian activity from other groups of upland Southeast Asia. Millenarianism continues to play a role in voicing social discontent, challenging power structures and moulding ethnic relations, but needs to be examined and understood within evolving socio-political contexts. When the marginalized dare to speak of a world in which inequality is not the norm, they are accused of utopianism by those who usually do not take issue with faith-based assumptions that contradict even the most elementary of the laws of physics and biology. This irony has been going on unnoticed thanks to the bourgeoisie's totalitarian domination of the means of knowledge production. Given this hegemony, it is imperative for any genuine form of critical thought to seek a revolutionary mode of perception and theorization to deliberately and insistently negate the actual for the sake of the realizable. This is precisely the forgotten essence of critical theory. From its origins in Marx's work, critical theory was an anti-philosophy philosophy, a negative theory aimed at negating the capitalist and racist order and problematizing the unspoken rules of domination. These stateless outsiders who refused to compromise in return for personal and financial security left us a school of thought that adamantly defies the prevalent order in favor of universal emancipation. In defense of this stance, and negativity as a philosophy of resistance, this article aims to expand the potential scope of critical theory by enhancing its fidelity to the marginalized.
