Earthquake magnitude plays a crucial role in assessing ground shaking severity and formulating mitigation strategies for both natural and induced earthquakes. This study specifically focuses on the Western Canada Sedimentary Basin (WCSB) and examines the estimation of local magnitude ( M L ) by different agencies. The analysis includes the application of various distance calibration functions for the Richter's methodology, incorporating both Richter's original function (Richter, Elementary Seismology, Freeman, San Francisco, Calif, 1958) and WCSB-specific calibration functions proposed by Yenier 2017 Bull Seismol Soc Am 107:1421-1431 and Babaie Mahani and Kao 2019 Seismol Res Lett 90:203-211, 2020 CSEG Recorder 45:12. In the WCSB, fluid injection has caused significant increase in the rate of seismicity in several localities, prompting the regulatory agencies to request suspension of injection operations after the occurrence of red-light (i.e., M L ≥ 4) events. Our investigation, based on a new dataset, sheds light on the significant effects due to distance calibration functions on the M L estimation. Notably, we observe that using the original Richter's calibration function designed for southern California results in more than three times the number of red-light events compared to employing more appropriate calibration functions. Our results point to the unnecessary economic consequences when exaggerated M L values are used in the regulatory process and underscores the need for adopting proper calibration functions for seismic monitoring in the WCSB. The sedimentation history of the Aldan–Maya sedimentary basin was reconstructed based on a seismostratigraphic section. In total, ten reconstructions were obtained showing the formation stages of the main sedimentary structures—the Riphean (Late Proterozoic) Aldan and Yudoma–Maya troughs and the overlying Vendian–Cambrian deposits, as well as the stages of tectonic restructurings. The use of the seismostratigraphic section and geological data to investigate the formation of the sedimentary cover contribute to a more substantiated and visual understanding of the evolution of the structure over more than 1.5 Ga. Lake Tennyson's basin and sedimentary record were assessed for multiple branches of paleoenvironmental research. A geophysical investigation of the lake depositional setting was supported by physical and chemical analysis of multiple sediment cores. The basin reaches 60 m depth and several subaerial landforms identified were likely deposited from seismic activity. Deformed sediments and turbidites in gravity cores are attributed to one or more large (pre)historic earthquakes, and episodic grain size changes in sediment cores are related to either seismic and/or climatic/meteorological processes. A hummocky slump deposit located on the western lake bed margin is linked to widespread sediment deformation that was likely caused by movement of the Awatere Fault. Radiocarbon dating constrains the most recent major deformation event between the late thirteenth century CE and mid-twentieth Century. Folded turbidites in the stratigraphy suggest multiple sedimentary deformation episodes occurred during the last millennium. Micro-XRF elemental signatures suggest proxies of past water column mixing (windiness proxy) can be reconstructed via identification of changing redox conditions. Records from Lake Tennyson show potential for several palaeoenvironmental research applications, and combining them with basin morphostratigraphy and land-based palaeoclimate and palaeoseismic evidence can enhance understanding of environmental change in the northern South Island. Hydrogen gas can provide baseload energy as society decarbonizes through the energy transition. Underground Hydrogen Storage (UHS) will be secure, convenient and scalable to accommodate excess hydrogen production or compensate temporary shortfalls in energy supply. Hydrogen is a gas under all viable subsurface conditions, so is invasive, mobile and low-density. Methane and CO 2 are also stored underground but storage parameters differ for each, affecting the balance of geological storage risks. UHS in Australia is most likely to utilise conventional sedimentary reservoir rocks bound by conventional trapping closures. Hydrogen energy density will affect the competitiveness of UHS against purpose-built surface storage or solution-mined salt cavities. This study presents an overview of key considerations when screening for UHS opportunities and evaluates them for five Australian sedimentary basins. A threshold storage depth mapped across them reveals that the most prospective UHS basins will have to function as integrated energy fluid resource systems. The Himalayan collision zone, where the Indian Plate subducts beneath the Eurasian Plate at a low angle, has caused many devastating earthquakes. The Kathmandu basin, situated in this region, is surrounded by mountains on all sides and is filled with distinct soft lake sediments with a highly undulating bedrock topography. The basin has been experiencing rapid urbanization, and the growing population in its major cities has increased the vulnerability to seismic risk during future earthquakes. Several strong-motion stations have recently been deployed in the Kathmandu basin. It is expected that the data captured by this strong-motion station array will further enhance our understanding of site amplification in sedimentary basins. Clear P-to-S converted waves have been observed in the strong-motion records. In this study, we investigate the medium boundary that generated these converted waves. First, we estimate the shallow velocity structures, which correspond to the topographic slopes or surface geology, beneath the strong-motion stations. We then apply a receiver function analysis to the strong-motion records. The receiver function indicates that the interface between the soft sediment and seismic bedrock serves as a boundary that generates converted waves. Sedimentary basins adjacent to subduction‐related continental arcs provide important archives for deciphering the intricate history of convergent plate margins. The east‐west trending Gangdese magmatic arc was one of the most predominant topographic features located at the southern margin of Tibet before the arrival of the Indian plate. However, the detailed Cretaceous growth and evolution across the arc system remains ambiguous. Stratigraphy of the adjacent Xigaze forearc basin provides a well‐preserved and well‐exposed record of the tectonic and magmatic evolution of the arc throughout the Cretaceous period. We report new stratigraphic, sedimentological, geochronological, and provenance analyses of the Quarry Ridge sandstone in the Xigaze forearc basin along with compiled zircon U‐Pb ages (n = 9674) and Lu‐Hf isotopic signatures (n = 3389) from the Gangdese arc, the Xigaze forearc basin, and the Linzhou retroarc foreland basin to reconstruct the Early to middle Cretaceous magmatism and uplift of the Gangdese arc and concurrent sedimentary responses within both basins. Exhumation of the arc initiates at around 113 Ma suggested by arc detritus first arriving in both basins. Another episode of inferred uplift occurs at around 108 Ma, which resulted in coarse‐grained sedimentation in adjacent basins, preventing Central Lhasa detritus from reaching the Xigaze forearc basin further south and a facies and provenance change within the Linzhou basin. Finally, a third episode at around 101 Ma is reflected by deposition of the progradational Quarry Ridge clastic succession and marks the initiation of a substantial coarse‐grained depositional stage in the Xigaze forearc basin. Our study emphasizes the connection between coarse‐grained deposition in the forearc basin and arc magmatism and uplift. This study also provides an orogen‐scale assessment of the history of arc magmatism, uplift, and sedimentation across the Gangdese magmatic arc system, which supports interpretations that Tibet was already characterized by complex and substantial topographic relief during the Cretaceous before the collision between the Indian and Eurasian plates. The Dunhuang Basin, situated in western China along the Altyn Tagh Fault (ATF) zone, intersects the Tethys and Paleo‐Asian Ocean tectonic domains. Influenced by both the ATF system and the far‐field effects of the Qiangtang‐Lhasa‐Eurasia collision during the Mesozoic, the mechanism of the Jurassic sedimentary migration of the basin in response to tectonic movements is unclear so far. The paper uses a comprehensive approach, including field geological surveys, lithologic and lithofacies discern, stratigraphic relationships analysis and 2D seismic profile interpretation, to examine the distribution of Jurassic residual strata in the basin. The comprehensive results of our study suggest that the Dunhuang Basin exists as an isolated block with unique tectonic and sedimentary evolution characteristics. In the Early Jurassic, the Dunhuang Basin underwent initial rifting, leading to the formation of small segmented intermontane sags. This phase was marked by the coarse particle sedimentary system of alluvial fans and braided rivers, represented the near source rapid deposition in the initial formation period of the basin. Stratigraphic distribution was primarily influenced by pre‐Jurassic basement topography and was not significantly constrained by faulting during this period. The formation of these isolated discontinuous small intermontane sags indicates the segmented activities of the ATF in the Early Jurassic period. In the Middle Jurassic period, influenced by the ATF dextral strike‐slip faulting, sedimentation extended eastward and the depocenter migrated clockwise compared with the distribution of the Middle Jurassic strata within the Dunhuang Basin. This period witnessed the development of coal measure strata at the basin's margins and lacustrine fine‐grained clastic deposition in the centre. The segmented fracture of the ATF gradually initiated a unified dextral strike‐slip tectonic movement. In the Late Jurassic period, sedimentary strata were locally present in the Wanyao Sag but absent in other sags. The depocenter migrated counterclockwise compared with the distribution of Middle Jurassic strata within the Dunhuang Basin, due to regional uplift accompanied by the ATF sinistral strike‐slip faulting caused by the collision between the Lhasa Block and the Eurasia Plate. The depocenter migration of the Dunhuang Basin constrained within the ATF system from the Early to Middle and Late Jurassic can be attributed to the transition of the ATF strike‐slip faulting in context of the stress relaxation and compression between the collision of the Qiangtang and Lhasa blocks to the Eurasia Plate, respectively. Around the world the Earth's crust is blanketed to various extents by sediment. For continental regions, knowledge of the distribution and thickness of sediments is crucial for a wide range of applications including seismic hazard, resource potential and our ability to constrain the deeper crustal geology. Excellent constraints on the sediment thickness can be obtained from borehole drilling or active seismic surveys. However, these approaches are expensive and impractical in remote continental interiors such as central Australia. Recently, a method for estimating the sediment thickness using passive seismic data, the collection of which is relatively simple and low cost, was developed and applied to seismic stations in South Australia. This method uses receiver functions, specifically the time delay of the P -to- S converted phase generated at the sediment-basement interface, relative to the direct- P arrival, to generate a first-order estimate of the thickness of sediments. In this work, we expand the analysis to the vast array of over 1500 seismic stations across Australia, covering an entire continent and numerous sedimentary basins that span the entire range from Precambrian to present day. We compare with an established yet separate method to estimate the sediment thickness, which utilizes the autocorrelation of the radial receiver functions to ascertain the two-way traveltime of shear waves reverberating in a sedimentary layer. Across the Australian continent the new results match the broad pattern of expected sedimentary features based on the various geological provinces. We are able to delineate the boundaries of many sedimentary basins, such as the Eucla and Murray Basins, which are Cenozoic, and the boundary between the Karumba Basin and the mineral rich Mount Isa Province. Contrasts in seismic delay time across these boundaries are upwards of 0.4  |$\, \mathrm{s}$|⁠. The delay signal is found to diminish to <0.1  |$\, \mathrm{s}$| for older Proterozoic basins, likely due to compaction and metamorphism of the sediments over time. As an application of the method, a comparison with measurements of sediment thickness from local boreholes allows for a straightforward predictive relationship between the delay time and the cover thickness to be defined. Sedimentary basins provide a deep time archive of tectonic and Earth-surface processes that can be leveraged by detrital mineral U-Pb dating and geochemistry to track paleogeography, magmatism, and crustal evolution. Zircon preserves the long-term (billions of years) record of supercontinent cycles; however, it is biased toward preserving felsic crustal records. Detrital rutile complements the detrital zircon record by providing constraints on the time and temperature of rifting and mafic magmatism, metamorphism, exhumation of the middle and lower crust, subduction, and amagmatic orogenesis. We use detrital zircon U-Pb and detrital rutile U-Pb geochronology and trace element analysis of Permian to Eocene siliciclastic rocks in the southern Pyrenees to capture supercontinent cycles of ocean basins opening and closing. Detrital rutile age spectra show peaks at ca. 100 Ma associated with rifting and hyperextension in the Pyrenean realm, 200 Ma associated with the Central Atlantic Magmatic Province, and 330 Ma, 375 Ma, and 400 Ma associated with subduction and Rheic Ocean crust formation. Zr-in-rutile thermometry and rutile Cr-Nb systematics provide further insight into metamorphic facies (peak metamorphic temperatures) and source rock lithology (mafic versus felsic affinity). Detrital zircon age spectra have peaks at ca. 300 Ma, 450 Ma, and 600 Ma associated with major orogenic events and felsic magmatism, and Th/U ratios provide information on relative zircon formation temperatures. Comparison of these independent records shows that detrital rutile reflects rifting, magma-poor orogenesis, and oceanic lithospheric processes, while detrital zircon detects continental lithospheric processes. The Mariana subduction system is an ideal place for ocean–ocean convergence boundary research. As a typical example of an extensional subduction model, the subduction process, subduction mechanism and subduction effect of this system have long been popular research topics. The seismic reflection information of oceanic sedimentary layers shown on multichannel seismic profiles is an intuitive record of small‐ to medium‐scale structural activity and sedimentary sequence evolution and is an important source for studying plate‐coupling processes and tectonic dynamic action. This paper is based on the raw multichannel seismic data of MGL1204 in the Mariana arc forearc region; these data were obtained by using linear interference filter technique noise attenuation technology and multiple velocity iterations to accurately image the oceanic sedimentary layer, and the imagery is used to study the Cenozoic fracture activity and residual strata thickness distribution characteristics of the middle part of the Mariana forearc region and to explore the tectonic migration characteristics of the Cenozoic sedimentary basins. We believe that due to the influence of regional stress field changes caused by the movement directions of the Pacific Plate and Philippine Sea Plate towards the Eurasian Plate, the development of secondary structures in the western Pacific subduction zone shows a characteristic west‐to‐east migration, and the structural characteristics of the Mariana forearc Cenozoic sedimentary basin are consistent with the regional tectonic features. The faults, stratigraphy and depocentres of the oceanic sedimentary layer show a migration pattern from west to east and from north to south overall; 25 and 13 Ma are identified as two key tectonic migration periods, and the tectonic migration characteristics and time records of the basin also provide direct evidence for the plate reconstruction model of trench retreat and Philippine Sea plate rotation. We studied the morphostructural features and chemical composition of micron and submicron particles of native gold from brown coals and overcoal sediments of the Yerkovetsky deposit (Zeya-Bureya sedimentary basin, Far East Russia). The samples of coal and host rocks in the form of thin sections, as well as coal particles and grains of native gold obtained during the process of dispersion and the fractionation of loose and crushed samples divided according to size and density, were analyzed using scanning electron microscopy in combination with X-ray microanalysis, involving various visualization modes. It was revealed that native gold is syngenetic with the mineralization of brown coals, and microphases dispersed in the minerals of overcoal loose and sandy-clay sediments were the source of native gold. In coal, gold is accumulated at the stages of formation (alluvial and eolian, including terrigenous and ionogenic subtypes) and the diagenesis of coal deposits (ground-infiltration subtype). A significant part of the mineralization process of coals and the formation of microparticles of native gold was contributed to by the descending water infiltration of polycomponent colloid solutions. During the dehydration of hydroxysiliconized iron-based hydrogels, mineral phases have an unstable composition and floccular structure and contain submicron gold particles. The coatings of all gold microparticles have identical origin and composition. Coal beds that border host rocks are an open system with a constant inflow of the substance, which leads to the gradual formation of polycomponent aggregated particles in micro cavities. Part of the gold in coals occurs as sulfur-bearing complexes dissolved in pore water. The key factor in the migration and deposition of gold in coals is the inorganic substances involved in the processes of coal mineralization. The origin of open‐mode fractures or joints, common in sedimentary basins (reservoirs), remains incompletely understood. These fractures require effective tensile stress for their formation, yet they usually develop at depths where effective compressive stresses dominate. Through 2‐D finite‐difference elastoplastic modeling, we demonstrate that effective tensile stresses and fracturing can be internally generated in stiff competent layers separated by compliant incompetent layers. Two primary factors drive this phenomenon: the layered structure of sedimentary units with varying mechanical properties of the layers and the lithostatic compression of the unit, leading to its gravity‐driven horizontal widening or stretching. This stretching occurs when the average horizontal stress over the unit's thickness is compressive. Various mechanisms can accommodate the stretching, including preexisting faults or weak zones, free borders like canyons, and horizontal extension of tectonic or gravitational origin. Tensile horizontal effective stresses σxx occur within the competent layers, while the incompetent layers generally remain under effective compression. The magnitude of σxx increases with the lithostatic stress or burial depth, as does the tensile strength σt of incompletely lithified sediments. Jointing occurs within depth intervals where |σxx| > σt. In our modeling approach, effective tensile stresses σxx are generated due to lithostatic compression σv. In the previous numerical modeling studies, these stresses resulted from extension directly applied to the lateral boundaries of the layers and did not depend on σv. We provide an analysis of the distinctions between these two approaches. Plain Language Summary: Open‐mode fractures, common in sedimentary basins and often forming spectacular networks, have long remained puzzling as they require tension but typically form in compression‐dominated environments. Our numerical modeling reveals that these fractures emerge within rigid layers sandwiched between softer ones. The layered structure of sedimentary strata with contrasting mechanical properties of the layers, and the weight of rocks from above, are the principal causes of this phenomenon. Tensile stresses develop only within rigid layers, while softer layers remain compressed, maintaining an overall compressive average stress. Stress magnitude and the strength of partially lithified sediments increase with depth during burial. Jointing occurs where tensile stresses surpass the tensile strength of the rock. Our modeling approach differs from previous ones where jointing resulted from the direct application of horizontal extension to the lateral boundaries of the strata independently of the burial depth. We offer a detailed analysis of the differences and similarities between these approaches. Late Cretaceous lateral facies and thickness changes are common in the southern Tethyan margin, especially during the final rifting stages of the Tethys and its early onset of closure. Particularly, northern Tunisia, being located closure to a plate boundary, represents an important area to investigate the tectonic influence on sedimentation. In this paper, detailed sedimentological, biostratigraphical and tectonic studies carried out in north-central Tunisia (Serj-Bargou area) to provide more data and precisions on the lithostratigraphy framework and tectonic control on Late Cretaceous deposits. Investigation of field data, high-resolution biostratigraphy, gravity data analysis and lithostratigraphic correlations of strata deposited during the Late Cretaceous allowed us to precisely determine the timing of unconformities and constrain the history of the subsidence inversion of the basin. Three major unconformities have been identified in the SW of Jebel Bargou and span the period from Coniacian to Maastrichtian. These unconformities are marked by Paleocene marls (containing the G. trinidadensis biozone) that unconformably overlie the Late Coniacian series (containing the D. concavata biozone), indicating an early tectonic compressional event in the Late Cretaceous, that probably started in Turonian. Similar tectonic inversion events have already been identified in other Tunisia areas and in the surrounding regional context within the northern and southern Tethyan margin during the Late Cretaceous. This inversion could be explained by a Santonian compressional event, which might have started earlier, in the context of the convergence between African and European plates. The inversion is reflected stratigraphically across the African margin and the intraplate basins, such as the Serj Bargou basin, by a highly reduced accommodation space and unconformities. This tectonic inversion indicates the effects of the change in the poles of rotation related to the opening of the Atlantic at about 83–85 Ma on the former North African passive margin. Deep-water currents are geographically widespread and represent important tight-oil and -gas reservoirs. However, identifying deep-water traction current deposits is challenging work. The main objectives of this research were to identify a new type of reservoir deposited in deep-water traction currents. Based on high-quality 3D seismic data and drilling data (logging data and lithology), the sedimentary characteristics of the MKT Formation of the upper Carboniferous Moscow Stage, southeastern Pre-Caspian Basin, were determined. The MKT Formation of the upper Carboniferous Moscow Stage is mainly composed of mudstone and some thin-bedded siltstone. This formation contains a series of "reversal foresets" dipping west (early paleo–high provenance during the depositional stage). Based on the seismic data and drilling logging data, lithology, paleo-geographic position, seismic facies, and form and scale, deep-water traction current deposits were identified in the M block. The discovery of deep-water traction current deposits in the M block not only provides a precious example for research on Paleozoic deep-water traction current deposits, and enriches our knowledge of basin sedimentary types, but also proves that the M block had complex fluid features and unveils a new domain for petroleum exploration in the basin. Geothermal energy exploration, development, and research have been ongoing in Canada for several decades. The country's cold climate and the push to develop renewable energy sources have driven interest in geothermal energy. Despite this drive, regulatory complexities and competition with other relatively inexpensive energy sources with existing infrastructure have hindered development. As such, interest has grown and waned with changes in the energy economy over several decades, leaving many projects at a standstill. As of January 2023, there are currently no operational geothermal power projects in Canada. Many hot spring pool and spa complexes remain active, and Canada is a leading country in the installation of ground source heat pumps (GSHPs; also called geo-exchange systems). However, in the last decade, the interest in deep geothermal systems has renewed, with many new projects starting up across several provinces and territories. Moreover, projects that had shown limited progress for many years—such as Mount Meager in British Columbia—have begun to renew their development efforts. Research is also expanding within prominent research groups and universities. The areas of focus include both building upon previous studies (such as thermal gradients and the heat flow in sedimentary basins) and researching new methods and resources (such as GSHPs, closed-loop systems, integrated geothermal operations, and hybrid systems, including heat storage). The development is supported by federal, provincial, and territorial governments through grants and the development of regulatory frameworks. Although challenges still remain for Canada to develop its geothermal energy resources, several power, thermal, and co-production projects, ongoing research, funding, and regulatory acts are all moving forward to support geothermal development. In this work, the study of the crustal structure of the Babouri-Figuil and Mayo Oulo-Lere sedimentary basins was carried out through the interpretation of gravity data. These data were obtained by combining the terrestrial gravity data obtained from the Earth Gravitational Model 2008. The analysis of the terrestrial Bouguer anomaly maps reveals both negative and positive anomalies. Negative anomalies, i.e., low-density signatures, are interpreted as specific rock types on the basis of the geological knowledge of the region while the positive anomalies are attributed to basaltic rocks underlying a generally granitic environment. The empirical method was used to distinguish anomalies due to deep structures from those due to near-surface structures. This method testifies that the residual map of degree 4 is appropriate. Six profiles are drawn on this residual Bouguer anomaly map and are interpreted using spectral analysis and 2D modeling methods. The results indicate that the mean depths of mass sources at the near-surface of the Babouri-Figuil and Mayo Oulo-Lere sedimentary basins are located at 1.50 km and 1.55 km, respectively. Moreover, the Babouri-Figuil Basin is constituted of two formations while the Mayo Oulo-Lere Basin exhibits three distinct formations. The spatiotemporal coupling relationship between deep hydrocarbon fluid and sandstone uranium mineralization within the shallow buried red‐variegated clastic rocks in the Qianjiadian area of the Songliao Basin remains a topic of controversy. This paper aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the source, nature and exudative age of deep exotic hydrocarbon, as well as the interaction mechanism and alteration process between hydrocarbon fluid and clastic rock. To achieve this, various methods were employed, including acidolysis hydrocarbon test (AHT), clay x‐ray diffraction (XRF), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), carbon isotope analysis (CIA) and LA‐ICP‐MS U–Pb isotopic dating. The results indicate that some tight sandstones from the Qingshankou Formation in Dalin uranium deposit exhibit high acidolysis hydrocarbon content (AHC), reaching n × 104 μL/kg, and predominantly consisting of low mature oil‐type gas. Local microscopic observations reveal pore fluorescence and hydrocarbon‐bearing inclusions with nattier blue tone. Furthermore, the kaolinites present in the ore area's sand‐bodies show a significantly higher content anomaly, commonly exceeding >50%, compared to the same layer in peripheral regions. Extensive dissolutions of lithic grains and feldspars are observed, along with the widespread occurrence of ferro‐dolomites and colloidal pyrites. Additionally, exotic asphaltenes are sporadically developed in localized areas. These findings provide evidence that the sand‐bodies experienced a significant exfiltration event of external gaseous fluids. The light carbon isotopes (δ13CV‐PDB ranging from −33.26‰ to −30.06‰) of group components and n‐Alkane suggest that the hydrocarbon originates from the source rock of the Lower Cretaceous Jiufotang Formation. A detailed two‐stage alteration sequence caused by acidic and reducing hydrocarbon is clarified, encompassing acidic corrosion, kaolinization, pyritization, silification and asphaltization during the exudation stage, followed by ferro‐dolomitization in the later cessation stage. Notably, vermicular secondary kaolinites, formed through the interaction between acidic hydrocarbon fluid and low‐temperature meteoric groundwater, serve as significant markers for the exfiltration of deep hydrocarbon fluid. In‐situ U–Pb dating of hydrocarbon‐bearing ferro‐dolomite yielded absolute exfiltration ages of 63.54 ± 4.13 and 65.93 ± 3.35 Ma. By integrating the tectonic–sedimentary–fluid evolution history and uranium mineralization characteristics in the study area, a three‐stage superimposed metallogenic model is proposed for the Upper Cretaceous red‐variegated layers: (1) the sedimentary and diagenetic stage of the target layer during the Late Cretaceous, (2) the predominant hydrocarbon exudation stage at the end of the Late Cretaceous, and (3) the main uranium mineralization stage since the Paleogene. This study enhances our understanding of coupled‐genetic sandstone‐type uranium deposit in a sedimentary basin and provides valuable guidance for prospecting similar red‐variegated beds in the Songliao Basin and other sedimentary basins worldwide. The history of the crustal subsidence in the Mesozoic and Cenozoic in the West Siberian Basin – the largest sedimentary basin in the world is considered. Most researchers associate its formation with post-rift crustal subsidence, which followed an episode of strong lithospheric stretching about 250 Ma ago at the Permian–Triassic transition. A characteristic feature of post-rift subsidence is a decrease in its rate in time. During the Mesozoic–Cenozoic history, the crustal subsidence rate in Western Siberia should have decreased by an order of magnitude. However, the analysis of long (700–900 km) seismic profiles in the north of Western Siberia and in the Southern Kara Sea shows that, on average, there has been an acceleration of the crustal subsidence since the beginning of the Mesozoic in these regions. Under such conditions, lithospheric stretching in them could be responsible for only a small fraction of the total crustal subsidence by 6–7 km. In Western Siberia, the crust is close to the isostatic equilibrium. Due to this, in the absence of strong stretching, the accumulation of thick sedimentary sequences in the basin could only have been caused by rock contraction in the lower crust due to prograde metamorphic reactions. To obtain the above results, we used some simple methods for the first time to analyze the structure of the sedimentary sequences in the West Siberian Basin. Detailed seismic profiles for many other deep basins on all the continents have been published. The methods of their interpretation implemented in the present paper can be easily applied to determine the role of lithospheric stretching in the formation of deep sedimentary basins on the global scale. Sedimentary rock–hosted stratiform copper deposits are the world's second largest source of copper and the largest source of cobalt, with about 73% of the copper occurring in two basins: the Katangan Basin (Central African Copperbelt) and the Permian Basin (Kupferschiefer). Why these two sedimentary basins are so highly endowed in copper is puzzling because sedimentary rock–hosted stratiform copper deposits have formed since the Paleoproterozoic and they all share remarkably similar ore mineralogy, host-rock characteristics and basin settings. We suggest that this discrepancy is due to the development of these two basins close to the bases of ~ 8000-km-long supermountain belts. The supermountain belts were instrumental in raising oxygen levels in Earth's atmosphere, as well as providing a voluminous source of groundwater and a powerful and long-lived driver for the fluid-flow system. The elevated oxygen levels facilitated the diagenetic processes that converted copper-bearing labile minerals to amorphous iron-oxides and smectite and then in turn to hematite and illite. When oxidized brines flushed through the basin successions, the liberated copper was transported to units containing carbon-rich mudstone and the metals were deposited. For the Katangan Basin, development of the Transgondwanan supermountain belt along its margins between about 525 and 510 Ma explains the delay of several hundreds of millions of years between basin formation and mineralization in the Central African Copperbelt. In contrast, development of the Mid-Pangean supermountain belt formed penecontemporaneous with the Permian Basin explains the similarity in timing between basin formation and mineralization in the Kupferschiefer. Geochemical compositions can be used to determine the tectonic setting of sedimentary basins, while where the link of source to sink is no longer preserved, detrital zircon age patterns can aid in resolving the original basin setting. The metasedimentary Legoupil Formation, located at Cape Legoupil and the Schmidt Peninsula, could give a hint for the tectonic evolution of Antarctic Peninsula. In this contribution, we constrain the sedimentary provenance of the Legoupil Formation through geochemistry and detrital zircon U-Pb geochronology. The petrography and geochemical features indicate that the provenance of the Legoupil Formation could be felsic rocks. Detrital zircon grains record a steady supply of Permian and Ordovician material into the Legoupil Formation. The youngest concordant zircon ages of 262 Ma suggest that the depositional time of Legoupil Formation is no older than Late Permian. The detrital zircon age spectrum of Legoupil Formation suggests that the Legoupil Formation sediments should be derived from regional sources endemic to western Gondwana prior to its breakup. Together with the previous studies, geochemistry and detrital zircons reflect an active continental margin tectonic setting and the detrital zircon spectra of Legoupil Formation are similar to the ones deposited in forearc tectonic setting. This paper presents a new methodology to assist geophysicists in determining the first-break event in a 3-D seismic data set using the well-known technique called dynamic time warping algorithm (DTW), which is usually used to find the optimal alignment between two time-series. We used the optimal path from the cost matrix to identify the first break in the seismogram using a few picks (seeds) made by an interpreter as a reference to perform this task. Furthermore, the data were pre-conditioned by the topographic and linear moveout to improve the method's accuracy. To demonstrate the technique's robustness, first, we applied the methodology in a synthetic seismic data. After demonstrating the efficiency of the algorithm, we applied the aforementioned methodology in the Polo-Miranga 3-D seismic cube located in the Recôncavo sedimentary basin, Bahia-Brazil, and in the seismic data acquired from the Blackfoot field in Alberta, Canada. The high-quality results showed consistency in determining the first break in all ranges of offsets, demonstrating an alternative way to accelerate this seismic processing step. Furthermore, we compared the results obtained by the proposed methodology with an algorithm based on comparing the short-time averages with long-time averages. Finally, we performed the static correction calculation to ensure that the time distortion resulting from the terrain and the low-velocity layer was mitigated in shoot gathers and in the stacked section. This article presents the results of deep seismic studies over the Sikhote-Alin fragment of the 8-DV reference geophysical profile running across the large fold structures of the Pacific tectonic belt, that is, the Sikhote-Alin Orogenic Belt with the superimposed Middle Amur sedimentary basin and the East Sikhote-Alin volcanoplutonic belt. A deep seismic section of the Earth's crust and upper mantle with the distribution of longitudinal wave velocities is constructed. In the upper part of the section, P-wave velocities vary from 4.0–5.0 km/s within the Middle Amur sedimentary basin and the eastern part of the Eastern Sikhote-Alin volcanoplutonic belt to 5.5–5.6 km/s in the central part of the Sikhote-Alin Orogenic Belt. It was established that the thick Paleozoic sedimentary complex within the Middle Amur sedimentary basin is faulted and folded in a complex manner. Crystalline rocks with a compressional wave velocity of 6.0–6.2 km/s occur at depths from 8 to13 km in different parts of the Middle Amur sedimentary basin and at depths of 4–6 km within the Sikhote-Alin orogenic complex. Compressional wave velocities of the crust in the Sikhote-Alin fragment of the 8-DV profile are between 6.3 and 6.35 km/s. The crust varies in thickness from 32–34 km in the northern part of the fragment to 36–37 km in its central and eastern parts. Along the Moho, P-wave velocities are 8.1–8.3 km/s; a number of areas with reduced Vp of 7.8 to 8.0 km/s were identified in the junction zones of large crustal blocks. P-wave data were used to identify anomalies which were correlated with structural-tectonic zones, deep fault zones, and seismicity. The thick Middle Amur sedimentary basin was distinguished along the Central Sikhote-Alin deep fault. This basin is filled by Paleozoic low-velocity deposits and is displaced along the fault plane by 4–5 km at its junction with the Sikhote-Alin Orogenic Belt. Despite several geological and geophysical studies that have focused on the estimation of the geometry of the sedimentary basins, the seismic documentation of sediment thickness is inadequately constrained due to the sparse spatial resolution of the expensive seismic and borehole measurements. To provide a new complementary insight into the morphology of the crystalline basement, I have re-examined the radially averaged power spectrum of magnetic anomalies for mapping depth to magnetic basement (DMB). DMB is a proxy of the non-magnetized sediment cover thickness over the magnetized crystalline basement. Synthetic models suggest that the accuracy of the method is not significantly influenced by the unknown magnetic fractal parameter and depth to the bottom of the magnetic slab. The windowing and window size effect on the estimated DMB can be substantial. Our synthetic tests suggest that the uncertainty of the calculated DMB increases with depth if the chosen window size is less than eight times the real DMB. I applied this method to the European, Greenland and North Atlantic regions because of the availability of seismically constrained sediment thickness or depth to the seismic basement (DSB), which allows comparison between DMB and DSB. The estimation of DMB was done by assuming a constant fractal parameter of three within a sliding window and with a variable size from 100 × 100 km in 10 km steps to a maximum size of 200 × 200 km until the estimated DMB is less than one eighth times of the window size. Comparison of DMB with DSB indicates a striking long-wavelength correlation along major sedimentary basins, while discrepancies may indicate limitations in the estimation methods for DMB and DSB. The tectonic evolution of the Lishui Sag in the East China Sea Shelf Basin significantly influences its sequence stratigraphy. By integrating seismic reflections, well logs and core data, this study examines the quantitative activity of the Lingfeng fault, sequence framework and sequence architecture in the Lishui Sag. The Paleocene succession is divided into one second-order sequence (SSQ1), three third-order sequences (SQ1–SQ3) and nine system tracts, representing a complete syn-rift evolution consisting of initial syn-rift, rift climax and late syn-rift stages. The results indicate that the differential activity of the Lingfeng fault shapes the basin structure and controls the subsidence centre, leading to prominent variations in the spatial distribution and filling of the sequence stratigraphy during different tectonic stages. The initial syn-rift sequence (SQ1), characterised by a low activity of the segmented Lingfeng fault, is primarily found in isolated small sub-sags. The rift climax sequence (SQ2), with increasing displacement and longer segmented fault zones, exhibits a wedge-shaped filling pattern with substantial topographic elevation differences. The late syn-rift sequence (SQ3) shows a gradual decrease in tectonic activity and uniform filling, with all system tracts within the sequences fully developed. The sequence architecture of the hanging wall in the Lishui Sag can be classified into fault-scarp and fault-slope type, whereas the sequence architecture of the hanging wall dip-slope can be classified into sedimentary slope-break and faulted slope-break. The Lingfeng fault controlled the tectonic evolution, sedimentary subsidence centre and sequence filling and architecture in the Paleocene rifted Lishui Sag. The Paleocene succession is divided into one second-order sequence (SSQ1), three third-order sequences (SQ1–SQ3) and nine system tracts, representing a complete syn-rift evolution consisting of initial syn-rift, rift climax and late syn-rift stages. Near coasts and shelves are strongly affected by the hydrodynamic forces and involves important information about the long term and permanent changes. Understanding the past dynamic transformations of shelves and near coasts can shed the future projections about effects of climate changes. High-resolution seismic and multibeam bathymetry data shed light on sedimentation since the last sea level lowstand in the Bandırma Bay, southern shelf area of the Marmara Sea. Five different seismic units were identified from the bottom upward based on seismic stratigraphic analysis, which are bounded by the reflection surfaces. Differential hydrological and depositional processes in the bay are shown by the definition and mapping of these unique seismic units and surfaces in the shallow sedimentary record: The water level in the basin crossed the threshold between the two basins, and advancing flows began from the north to the western basin. The basin continued to fill with water, and progressive depositions were interrupted with the onlaps of U3–4. The water level rose above the threshold in both basins, resulting in the two lakes becoming a single lake and the creation of marine conditions. The initial deposition in the eastern basin was fluvial, deposited in the form of regressive systems tracts. The overall morphology and stratigraphic settings observed in Bandırma Bay have nearly the same characteristics as those observed in the Sea of Marmara (like northern and western Marmara shelf, Gemlik Bay, Büyükçekmece Bay etc.) oceanography, implying that similar hydrodynamic conditions and erosional and depositional processes are controlled mainly by sea level changes controlled by climate changes related to morphological properties. Based on potential field data, anomalies derived from the EIGEN6C4 satellite model were used to interpret various structural features of the coastal plain, Southwest Cameroon volcanic line, northwestern margin of Congo Craton (CC) and southern extension of Pan-African belt. Since building a global comprehension of unknown phenomena about Earth's materials is of high relevance given the tectonic complexities of the investigated area, some edge enhancement techniques were applied to the gravimetric data. After generating the Bouguer anomalies, a cosine filter was used to provide the residual data set that should characterize the gravity effect arising from superficial density sources, and finally, some amplitude and phase-based edge detection methods were used to interpret the computed Bouguer and residual data. The results of this research work have demonstrated that the enhanced horizontal gradient amplitude and fast sigmoid edge detector (FSED) filters could detect density boundaries more successfully than the other filters tested. The structural map generated by FSED revealed that the delineated lineaments are oriented NW–SE, NE–SW, N–S and NNE–SSW. In addition, important tectonic features such as Central Cameroon, Kribi–Campo and Sanaga shear zones are indicative of the effectiveness of this methodological approach and the CC limit was better highlighted in this research work. In general, the lineament map enhances the knowledge of the structural setting of the Douala Kribi–Campo sedimentary basin as well as unexposed fracture zones that may have caused seismic events in recent years. In this paper, we use a new workflow to substantiate the characterization of a prominent, deep sediment conductor in the hyperextended Bjørnøya Basin (SW Barents Sea) previously identified in smooth resistivity models from 3-D deterministic inversion of magnetotelluric data. In low-dimensionality environments like layered sedimentary basin, 1-D Bayesian inversion can be advantageous for a thorough exploration of the solution space, but the violation of the 1-D assumption has to be efficiently handled. The primary geological objectives of this work is therefore preceded by a secondary task: the application of a new machine learning approach for handling the 1-D violation assumption for 21 MT field stations in the Barents Sea. We find that a decision tree can adequately learn the relationship between MT dimensionality parameters and the 1-D–3-D residual response for a training set of synthetic models, mimicking typical resistivity structures of the SW Barents Sea. The machine learning model is then used to predict the dimensionality compensation error for MT signal periods ranging of 1–3000 s for 21 receivers located over the Bjørnøya Basin and Veslemøy High. After running 1-D Bayesian inversion, we generated a posterior resistivity distribution for an ensemble of 6000 1-D models fitting the compensated MT data for each 21 field stations. The proportion of 1-D models showing ρ < 1 Ω·m is consistently beyond 80 per cent and systemically reaches a maximum of 100 per cent in the Early Aptian–Albian interval in the Bjørnøya Basin. In hyperextended basins of the SW Barents Sea, the dimensionality compensation workflow has permitted to refine the characterization of the deep basin conductor by leveraging the increased vertical resolution and optimal used of MT data. In comparison, the smooth 3-D deterministic models only poorly constrained depth and lateral extent of the basin anomaly. The highest probability of finding ρ < 1 Ω·m is robustly assigned to the syn-tectonic Early Aptian–Albian marine shales, now buried at 6–8 km depth. Based on a theoretical two phase fluid-rock model, we show that the pore fluid of these marine shales must have a higher salinity than seawater to explain the anomaly ρ < 1 Ω·m. Therefore, the primary pore fluid underwent mixing with a secondary brine during rifting. Using analogue rift systems in palaeomargins, we argue that two possible secondary brine reservoir may contribute to deep saline fluid circulation in the hyperextended basin: (1) Permian salt-derived fluid and, (2) mantle-reacted fluid from serpentinization. The study area is located in cental Slovenia, and geologically located at the junction between the Alps and the Dinarides. The Middle Triassic of this region is characterised by intense rifting manifested by differential subsidence and volcanism. This led to a major paleogeographic reorganisation of the region, where three paleogeographic domains formed in the Upper Triassic: The Julian Carbonate Platform in the north, the intermediate Slovenian Basin, both parts of the Southern Alps, and the Dinaric (Adriatic, Friuli) Carbonate Platform in the south, which today is a part of the External Dinarides that host the area of investigation. Prior to the installation of the Dinaric Carbonate Platfrom, i.e. in the Ladinian, the entire area of the preset-day External Dinarides broke up into numerous tectonic blocks that were exposed to either erosion or continental, shallow-marine, and deep-marine sedimentation. In this study, we analyse at small scale a complex transitional area between a local carbonate platform and the Kobilji curek basin (depositional area dominated by deeper marine sediments), located in the Rute Plateau in central Slovenia south of Ljubljana. During enhanced subsidence, the basin was filled with volcanic material (tuffs and volcanogenic clays and subordinate extrusive material), while the adjacent platform aggraded. The slope was positioned above active paleofaults. During relative sea level lowstand, the platform prograded across the basin. The study area is divided into four major tectonic paleoblocks. The NW paleoblock experienced the most enhanced subsidence, and the platform prograded twice in this area and was submerged again by the rejuvenated subsidence and/or sea-level rise. The second and third paleoblocks subsided only during discrete major subsidence events, and the carbonates of the platform and slope were soon reinstated therein. In the fourth paleoblock to the east the platform persisted during the Ladinian. In the Carnian, the entire study area became emerged, and continental clastics were deposited. These were then replaced by a uniform shallow marine/intertidal Hauptdolomit (Dolomia Principale) formation at the onset of the Norian. This study provides the first detailed reconstruction of the sedimentary evolution of small-scale Ladinian basin and platforms system in the northern External Dinarides. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this study, field descriptions of the dolerite dykes cross‐cutting the Pan‐African basement (DPB) and the dolerite and gabbroic dykes cross‐cutting the Cretaceous sedimentary basin (DGCSB) are used together with petrographic, bulk‐rock geochemistry, as well as Sr–Nd–Pb isotopic data to constrain the geodynamic setting and origin of these mafic (basanite, basalt and basaltic andesite in composition) rocks that outcrop in the Figuil–Léré area. The DPB dykes are alkaline with SiO2 of 46.63–49.03 wt% and MgO of 3.93–7.11 wt%. In contrast, the DGCSB dykes are subalkaline with SiO2 ranging between 50.24 and 53.16 wt% and MgO fluctuating between 5.22 and 7.90 wt%, comparable to dykes described in other regions of the Cameroon Line (CL). The rocks studied belong to the tholeiitic series and were emplaced in within‐plate basalts (WPB) and mid‐ocean ridge basalts (MORBs) setting. The variations in major and trace elements from the basanite to basaltic andesite compositions are dependable with fractional crystallization (FC) of different mineral phases such as opaque minerals, olivine, clinopyroxene, amphibole and alkali feldspar. Most samples exhibit negative Nb–Ta and positive Sr anomalies, which together with the negative correlation between MgO and 87Sr/86Sr, and isotopic ratio of 206Pb/204Pb <19.5 (18.27–19.49) suggests interactions of crustal components. Nevertheless, this contamination seems limited because there is a positive correlation between SiO2 and 143Nd/144Nd plot and low Ba contents (72–210 ppm) of the samples compared to the mid‐continental crust (259–628 ppm). Trace element modelling proposes a derivation of the Figuil–Léré dykes from parental melts generated by 4%–15% partial melting of a source containing garnet peridotite in the mixed lithospheric–asthenospheric mantle. The isotopic data of the dykes studied with hybrid magma composition are characterized by more radiogenic 87Sr/86Sr, 143Nd/144Nd and 206Pb/204Pb isotopic ratios with a dominant mixing of depleted MORB mantle (DMM)–enriched mantle 1 (EM1)–enriched mantle 2 (EM2), like those of other mafic dykes of the CL. The Levant Basin in the Eastern Mediterranean contains an ∼3-km-thick, predominantly siliciclastic section of Oligocene-Miocene age, which hosts large hydrocarbon reservoirs ("Tamar Sands Play"). Here, we present a provenance study of Oligocene-Miocene sandstones based on detrital zircon U-Pb-Hf and heavy mineral assemblages. Samples were retrieved from four boreholes across the Levant Basin: Myra-1, Dolphin-1, Leviathan-1, and Karish North-1. Our investigations revealed that the sediments are dominated by Neoproterozoic and older Precambrian zircons with variable Hf isotopic composition, indicating that they were mainly reworked from Paleozoic-Mesozoic sandstones of African-Arabian provenance, with minor derivation from the Neoproterozoic basement of the Arabian-Nubian Shield. Variations in the proportions of pre-900 Ma zircons were encountered in various levels of the siliciclastic section. These zircons were markedly enriched (44%-57%) in the Rupelian and Aquitanian-Burdigalian intervals, accompanied by abundant detrital apatite peloids in the heavy mineral fraction, and relatively sparse (21%-38%) in the Chattian-Aquitanian and Langhian-Tortonian intervals, alongside scarce Mesozoic-Cenozoic zircons. These findings allow us to associate the deep-basin detrital record with two sedimentary transport systems that reached the Levant Basin from both NE Africa and Arabia simultaneously until the late Miocene, when sediment transport from Arabia ceased. While Rupelian and Aquitanian-Burdigalian sediments, including the main section of the "Tamar Sands," were derived mainly from Arabian sources via the Levant continental margin, Chattian-Aquitanian and Langhian-Tortonian sediments were primarily sourced from NE Africa via the Nile Delta. Detrital contribution from the Eurasian side of the Eastern Mediterranean was not identified, suggesting that sand originating in the Arabia-Eurasia collision belt did not reach the Levant Basin. The Eocene Yulong porphyry copper belt (YPCB) in eastern Tibet contains more than 10 Mt of Cu metal, associated with subvolcanic to volcanic porphyry systems intruding Cenozoic sedimentary basins. Geochemical data analysis shows that all samples belonged to high-K calc-alkaline and shoshonite series with metaluminous–peraluminous characteristics, light rare earth elements and large ion lithophile elements enrichment, high field strength elements depletion, and share geochemical similarities to adakitic rocks. We have established a spatiotemporal evolution framework through geochronological data analysis, combined with calculated bulk zirconium saturation temperature, calculated crustal thickness and geophysical evidence. We identified three magmatic processes triggered by asthenospheric upwelling and thermal erosion of thickened crust: (1) ultrapotassic magma derived from metasomatized mantle; (2) coeval ultrapotassic melt that promoted the partial melting of eroded lower crust and the generation of high-K adakitic felsic melt; high-K and Mg# adakitic fertile magma was formed by interaction between the eroded sulfide-rich juvenile lower crust-derived melt and mantle peridotite; (3) high-K adakitic fertile magma was derived from sulfide-rich juvenile lower crust, triggered by injecting hydrous ultrapotassic magma into thinned lower crust. The difference between deposit size in the north/south section of Yulong belt may be caused by the temperature of magmatic source and the volume of coeval potassic–ultrapotassic magmatism. Our analysis of the YPCB suggests that magmatism after 175 Ma within Intermontane arc complex of the Canadian Cordillera has high potential for porphyry deposits. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Stratigraphic Drilling Project of the Russian Arctic Shelf, conducted by the Rosneft Oil Company, focuses their attention on the stratigraphic age and composition of rock complexes of the sedimentary basins. In 2021, six shallow boreholes for the first time were drilled with core sampling in the eastern part of the Laptev Sea. Drilling recovered sedimentary rocks of the folded basement that have been dated to the Late Barremian–Early Aptian. The synrift complex lying with angular unconformity has been dated to the Paleocene. The section of the overlying Eocene–Pleistocene sediments contains significant hiatuses. The data obtained by drilling together with the results of seismic interpretation allowed us to clarify the regional geological model and to date the stages of its tectonic evolution. The Jurassic Zhiluo Formation in the western Ordos Basin is known for hosting economically significant sandstone-type uranium deposits. However, the understanding of sediment sources for this formation, crucial for guiding uranium exploration, has been a subject of controversy. This study aims to address this issue by presenting a systematic dataset derived from detrital zircons found in the uranium-bearing sandstones of the Zhiluo Formation. The dataset includes U‒Pb dating, trace element analyses, and in-situ Hf isotope compositions. The detrital zircons analysed are predominantly of magmatic origin, as indicated by a Th/U ratio greater than 0.4. Their U‒Pb ages can be broadly categorized into a predominant population ranging from 170 to 500 Ma, with a peak ca. 300 Ma. Additionally, there are two minor age populations: 1600–2050 Ma (peaking at ca. 1850 Ma) and 2300–2650 Ma (peaking at ca. 2500 Ma). The εHf(t) values of these zircons exhibit a range from −27 to 7, concentrating mostly from −16 to 5. Importantly, none of them aligns above the deficit mantle evolutionary line in an εHf(t) vs. age covariant diagram. A comprehensive comparison of the analytical U‒Pb ages and Hf isotopic results with previously reported data from adjacent geological units surrounding the western Ordos Basin suggests that the primary provenance supply area for the sandstones is the Alxa Block, particularly the uranium-rich felsic rocks within it. Minor contributions are inferred from the Yinshan Block and the Qilian Orogenic Belt. The northwestern region of the study appears to be the primary prospect area for uranium exploration, and we have proposed effective measures to refine the exploration target area and enhance exploration efficiency. Overall, the study provided crucial insights into deducing provenance supply areas and transport paths, with implications for uranium exploration in sedimentary basins worldwide. A shallow crustal velocity structure (above 10 km depth) is essential for understanding the crustal structures and deformation and assessing the exploration prospect of natural resources, and also provides priori information for imaging deeper crustal and mantle structure. Passive-source seismic methods are cost-effective and advantageous for regional-scale imaging of shallow crustal structures compared to active-source methods. Among these passive methods, techniques utilizing receiver function waveforms and/or body-wave amplitude ratios have recently gained prominence due to their relatively high spatial resolution. However, in basin regions, reverberations caused by near-surface unconsolidated sedimentary layers often introduce strong non-uniqueness and uncertainty, limiting the applicability of such methods. To address these challenges, we propose a two-step inversion method that uses multi-frequency P-RF waveforms and P-RF horizontal-to-vertical amplitude ratios. Synthetic tests indicate that our two-step inversion method can mitigate the non-uniqueness of the inversion and enhance the stability of the results. Applying this method to teleseismic data from a linear seismic array across the sedimentary basins in Northeast China, we obtain a high-resolution image of the shallow crustal S-wave velocity structure along the array. Our results reveal significant differences between the basins and mountains. The identification of low-velocity anomalies (≤2.8 km s−1) at depths less than 1.0 km beneath the Erlian Basin and less than 2.5 km beneath the Songliao Basin suggests the existence of sedimentary layers. Moreover, the high-velocity anomalies (∼3.4–3.8 km s−1) occurring at depths greater than 7 km in the Songliao Basin may reflect mafic intrusions emplaced during the Early Cretaceous. Velocity anomaly distribution in our imaging result is consistent with the location of the major faults, uplifts, and sedimentary depressions, as well as active-source seismic results. This application further validates the effectiveness of our method in constraining the depth-dependent characteristics of the S-wave velocity in basins with unconsolidated sedimentary cover. The Surgah Formation was studied in four sections (Kuh-e-Surgah anticline, Zifel, Sarkan, and Mal-e-kuh) from the NW-SE of the Zagros sedimentary basin. Forty-one planktonic foraminiferal species belonging to 20 genera were observed. The recorded species were used to subdivide the Surgah Formation into three biozones: Marginotruncana sigali-Dicarinella primitiva Zone, Dicarinella concavata Zone, and Dicarinella asymetrica Zone. Based on these data, the Surgah Formation was estimated to be of late Turonian to late Santonian age. The Coniacian/ Santonian boundary is placed at the Dicarinella asymetrica Zone. The base of the Santonian stage is identified on the FO of Globotruncana linneiana (pill box shaped), the FOs of Dicarinella asymetrica, Globotruncanita elevata and Globotruncana bulloides, and the LOs of Dicarinella primitiva, Dicarinella concavata and Muricohedbergella flandrini. The article reports morphotectonic and petrological characteristics of Permo-Triassic trap basalts covering the major part of Siberian Craton and its surroundings. Lavas, sills, and dykes are distributed in Taimyr, in the crystalline basement and Mesozoic cover of the West Siberian Plate and in Kara sedimentary basin. Investigations include relief analysis, seismotomographic data, magnetic and gravitational anomalies. Four sectors of magma-permeable zones were distinguished along the perimeter of the Anabar Shield in the Siberian craton. The western sector is characterized by an intensive fracturing and stretching where the Tunguska syncline filled by the flood basalt was formed. A striking feature of volcanism is the meridional petrochemical trend corresponding to increasing the silica (decreasing pressure) of basic magmas in volcanic and intrusive rocks of the Siberian Craton from the impact center, located at the North near Norilsk, to South regions – Kuzbass and Angara-Taseev regions. It corresponds to the thinning of the mantle keel, which coincides with the reduction of the volumes of erupted melts. This trend was determined for volcanics referring to the two major time events 252–244 and 238–232 Ma. Research highlights: Permo-Triassic traps of Siberia cover West Siberian Plate and Siberian Crat. Plum impact is located part near the Norilsk region. Diffused spreading developed in Tunguska syncline. Intensive volcanism concentrating along the deep faults. In the Northern part the dike belts and extended sill intrusions prevail. Geologically complex Proterozoic Cuddapah basin and its environs, have played a vital role in the geodynamic evolution of the India-east Antarctica terrain during Columbia, Rodinia and Gondwana supercontinental assembly periods. In the present study, we investigate subsurface crustal seismic structure of the north Cuddapah basin, by reprocessing seismic data, acquired along 325 km long Alampur–Koniki–Ganapeswaram profile. The study depicted a thin veneer of alluvium (2.00–2.90 km/s), underlain by the Gondwana (4.00 km/s) and upper (5.00–5.20 km/s) and lower (5.50–5.70 km/s) Proterozoic sediments in East Coast Sedimentary Basin. Similarly, in the fault-bounded Cuddapah basin, upper and lower Cuddapah sediments are characterised by velocities 5.05–5.10 km/s and 5.50–5.70 km/s with combined thickness of 2.8 km in Kurnool basin and 1.9 km in Nallamalai basin. They rest directly over crystalline basement (5.90–6.05 km/s), underlain further by mid-crustal layer (6.20–6.30 km/s) located at depths of 5–15 km. Massive mid-crustal exhumation in the form of a prominent hidden ridge structure below Darsi and Addanki regions of Nellore Schist and Eastern Ghats Belts is imaged, which is ascribed to India-East Antarctic collision. The studied region coincides with anomalous thermal field, shallow LAB, up-dipping of over-thrusted layers and active seismicity. Possibly, a marginal ocean basin existed in this region during the Columbia and Rodinia supercontinent assembly periods, which underwent successive rifting episodes during Paleo-Mesoproterozoic Era. At present, the study of the oil and gas potential of poorly explored areas of oil and gas basins in the Russian Federation is of great importance due to the possibility of discovering large hydrocarbon accumulations in them. The Vychegda Trough in the north of the Volga–Ural basin is considered to be one of such areas. The research is devoted to the assessment of the oil and gas potential of the Vychegda Trough based on the concept of "petroleum systems", which is widely used in oil and gas geology. A comprehensive analysis of geological and geophysical, petrophysical and geochemical data was carried out, and modern technologies for studying the oil and gas potential of sedimentary basins were applied: paleotectonic, paleogeographic reconstructions and basin modeling. The results of the research allowed us to determine a sufficiently high potential for the discovery of hydrocarbon accumulations and to identify three potential petroleum systems in the basin section: Riphean, Vendian and Devonian–Permian. The Upper Jurassic-Lower Cretaceous sedimentary rocks in the Eastern Barents Sea Basin are up to 2 km thick and represent one of the least studied Arctic intervals. Here, for the first time, we present a detailed analysis of 43,000 km of 2D seismic profiles, as well as well-log and core data from 24 offshore wells with the aim to create a comprehensive sequence stratigraphic framework that can be integrated with the rest of the basin. Results show that (1) seven third-order sequences and five types of clinoforms can be identified based on integrated seismic and well data. The age of each sequence was established based on published biostratigraphic investigations along with new dinocyst interpretations included in this study; (2) the deep marine basin was gradually filled with sediments coming from north, east and south as a response to HALIP, Canada Basin opening and Cimmerian uplift of Novaya Zemlya, and was preserved only in the southwestern part of the Barents Sea Basin at the end of Early Cretaceous and (3) both Eastern Barents Sea and West Siberia Basin share similarities in sedimentary environments and tectonic setting, though the spatial distribution of clastic reservoirs in Upper Jurassic and Lower Cretaceous mega-sequence heavily depends on the source areas that require more provenance focused research. Sills play a leading role in the transport of magma in sedimentary basins. The contact between sills and host rocks reflects the acting emplacement processes during sill propagation and evolution. Recent studies have shown that the propagation of sills and dykes is strongly influenced by the lithology of the host rocks, but none have detailed documentation of marginal features in large-scale intrusive complexes. Threedimensional seismic data is the primary method of mapping and investigating such complexes, but it is difficult to accurately image sills due to their low thickness compared to seismic resolution. By understanding the relationship between local lithology and marginal sill features, we can better understand the imaging of sills in seismic datasets and their resulting geometry. In this study, we present a seismicscale sill analogue through multiple high-resolution three-dimensional models, with corresponding logs and field observations from Cedar Mountains, San Rafael Swell, US. This model was further used to develop a synthetic seismic dataset, providing us with a strong control on which marginal sill features fall beneath seismic resolution. We found that lithology plays a critical control in sill geometry and morphology. In Cedar Mountains, sills emplaced within massive sandstones frequently exhibit strata-discordant base contact with the host rock. Conversely, sills found within heterolithic intervals and mudstones typically display strata-concordant base contact with the host rocks. Sills within heterolithic intervals also tend to exhibit a more complex segmentation with multiple broken bridges. Furthermore, our findings show that sills are more than 3.7 times more likely to intrude in mudstone compared to sandstone and heterolithic intervals. These results suggest how sill geometries can be adapted to interpret lithology in seismic datasets from sedimentary basins with little to no well control. We anticipate that our findings may provide better knowledge for interpreting sills in sedimentary basins and contribute to developing more sophisticated geomechanical emplacement models for igneous intrusions. To integrate structural subsurface models and smooth seismic velocity models, they need to share common features and resolutions. Here, we propose a new approach, Depth Assessment from Rayleigh Wave Ellipticities (DARE), for estimating the depth of sudden velocity changes from ambient‐noise multi‐mode Rayleigh waves applicable to a wide range of frequencies. At frequencies where multi‐mode Rayleigh waves have an extremum in ellipticity, the phase velocity can be used to estimate the depth of sudden velocity changes. We test our approach theoretically, numerically, and on real data from two geothermal sites by extracting Rayleigh wave ellipticities and phase velocities from three‐component beamforming of ambient noise using the python code package B3AMpy. For a small‐scale array, our approach validates the depth of quaternary sediments predicted by geological models. For deeper velocity changes, high uncertainties remain but the general trend of inclining boundaries can be recovered well. We demonstrate that, if impedance contrasts are larger than three, our approach is valid for multiple layers, laterally heterogeneous models, and a wide range of Poisson ratios. It estimates the depth of sudden changes in seismic velocity using Rayleigh waves from ambient noise. We discuss the tectonic structure, seismic stratigraphy and evolution of the NW Sulu Sea using reprocessed 2D reflection profiles. The NW Sulu Sea is located between the Palawan continental shelf and the Cagayan Ridge and represents the northern part of the Sulu Sea, a marginal sea resulting from Paleogene extension and subsequent Neogene contraction due to convergence between the Palawan and the Philippine blocks. The basin consists of six seismo‐stratigraphic units overlying crystalline basement. Syn‐orogenic depocenters contain calibrated Middle Miocene to, possibly, Lower Miocene units, while rift‐related depocenters consist of uncalibrated but tentatively dated Paleogene to Lower Miocene units. Thickness and depth maps of the main units and bounding horizons differentiate the Piedra‐Blanca and the Rasa domains, separated by the NW‐Sulu‐Break major tectonic structure. Fault‐bounded rift‐related depocenters are strongly segmented. We interpret that NW‐SE and NE‐SW trending zones accommodate shape and trend variations of these depocenters. We suggest that these zones may link rift segments, recording different extensional deformation. Miocene thrusting and folding in the Piedra‐Blanca Domain and mudflow with associated gravitational structures in the Rasa Domain influenced the deposition of syn‐orogenic units. Rift structures inherited from rift segmentation may have conditioned the style and distribution of contractional deformation during the subsequent incipient reactivation during contraction. In the context of SE Asia, our results support that the timing of rifting of the NW Sulu Sea overlaps with the opening of the South China Sea and the North Palawan margin, which may indicate a common geodynamic driving force triggering extension. Plain Language Summary: The SE Asia region includes several basins partially floored by oceanic crust, frequently containing or bounded by volcanic island arcs. These basins are known marginal seas and, although it is critical to decipher the geodynamic evolution of the entire region, the structure and tectonic history of most of these marginal seas are still insufficiently known. The Sulu marginal sea lies between the Sulu Archipelago and the Palawan, Mindanao, Negros and Panay islands. The Cagayan Ridge separates the NW and SE Sulu seas, which show a contrasting seafloor morphology, resulting from Paleogene extension and subsequent Neogene contraction. In this work, we study the structure and tectonic evolution of the NW Sulu Sea based on the re‐processing and interpretation of seismic reflection profiles acquired in 1982 and 1987. We analyzed and calibrated the seismo‐stratigraphy of the sediment infill, determined the main tectonic and gravitational structures and the geometry and spatial distribution of depocenters. Our results show for the first time the basin‐wide overall structure and constrain tectonic models, describing the opening and, particularly, the contractional deformation of the NW Sulu Sea. This provides further information to understand the formation of the Sulu Sea and the evolution of convergent systems in SE Asia. Heat capacity data are unavailable or incomplete for many minerals at geologically relevant temperatures. Despite the availability of entropy and enthalpy values in numerous thermodynamic tables (even sometimes at elevated temperatures), there remains need for extrapolation beyond, or interpolation between, temperatures. This approach inevitably results in estimates for entropy and enthalpy values because the heat capacity coefficients required for optimal thermodynamic treatment are less frequently available. Here we propose a simple method for obtaining heat capacity coeficients of minerals. This method requires only the empirically measured temperature-specific heat capacity for calculation via a matrix algorithm. The system of equations solver is written in the Python computing language and has been made accessible in an online repository. Thermodynamically, the solution to a system of equations represents the heat capacity coefficients that satisfy the mineral-specific polynomial. Direct coefficient calculation will result in more robust thermodynamic data, which are not subject to fitting uncertainties. Using hematite as an example, this method provides results that are comparable to conventional means and is applicable to any solid material. Coeficients vary within the traditional large 950 K temperature interval, indicating that best results should instead utilize a smaller 400 K temperature interval. Examples of large-scale implications include the refinement of geothermal gradient estimation in rapidly subsiding sedimentary basins or metamorphic and hydrothermal evolution. A series of well-exposed Paleogene sedimentary successions in the Kohat Basin of northwestern Pakistan (western Himalayas), are used to document the development of Paleogene sedimentary sequence deposited in a clastic–carbonate–evaporate distally steepened to a homoclinal ramp setting. Larger benthic foraminifer stratigraphy, sedimentology and microfacies were used to reconstruct the depth of deposition of the sediments and to aid in reconstructing the subsidence history of the sedimentary basin through the Paleogene. Based on the timing of the cessation of marine sedimentation and the subsidence analysis of the Paleogene rocks of the Kohat Basin, we conclude that a proto-closure of the basin occurred in the early Eocene (Ypresian) at ca 50–49.5 Ma, followed by return of marine sediments, with full closure of the Tethys seaway in the middle Eocene ca 40–41.2 Ma (Lutetian), potentially resulting in diachroneity of emergence of basins along strike of the orogen. Paleogene Larger Benthic Foraminferal biostratigrphy and facies information in the Eastern Tethys segment of the Kohat Basin, Pakistan are presented. Subsurface sandstone reservoirs sealed by overlying, low-permeability layers provide capacity for long-term sequestration of anthropogenic waste. Leakage can occur if reservoir pressures rise sufficiently to fracture the seal. Such pressures can be generated within the reservoir by vigorous injection of waste or, over thousands of years, by natural processes. In either case, the precise role of intercalated mudstones in the long-term evolution of reservoir pressure remains unclear; these layers have variously been viewed as seals, as pressure sinks, or as pressure sources. Here, we use the geological record of episodic fluid venting in the Levant Basin to provide striking evidence for the pressuresource hypothesis. We use a Bayesian framework to combine recently published venting data, which record critical subsurface pressures since ~2 Ma, with a stochastic model of pressure evolution to infer a pressure-recharge rate of ~30 MPa/Myr. To explain this large rate, we quantify and compare a range of candidate mechanisms. We find that poroelastic pressure diffusion from mudstones provides the most plausible explanation for these observations, amplifying the ~3 MPa/Myr recharge caused primarily by tectonic compression. Since pressurized mudstones are ubiquitous in sedimentary basins, pressure diffusion from mudstones is likely to promote seal failure globally. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The first results of the U–Th–Pb isotope dating of detrital zircons (dZr, N = 130, n = 91) from the middle Danian sandstones (63.9–65.3 Ma) of the Cretaceous–Eocene Novorossiisk–Anapa flysch widely developed in the Sochi synclinorium (southern slope of the Western Caucasus) are presented. The maximum and minimum dZr age is 2973 ± 12 Ma and 318 ± 3 Ma, respectively; weighted average age of the four youngest dZr is ~322 ± 7 Ma. There are no signs of erosion products of the Jurassic magmatites involved in the structure of the Greater Caucasus and Crimean Mountains into the sedimentary basin, where the Novorossiisk–Anapa flysch was formed. The results have revealed a high degree of similarity between the provenance signals of the Danian sandstones from the Novorossiisk–Anapa flysch, some Paleogene–Neogene and Early Quaternary (Early Pleistocene) sandstones of the Western Caucasus and Western Cis-Caucasia, red-colored Upper Permian and Lower Triassic sandstones of the Moscow syneclise, as well as Late Quaternary alluvium at lower reaches of the Don and Volga rivers draining vast expanses of the Russian Plate. These facts suggest: (1) the absence of eroded mountain structures of the Greater Caucasus and Crimea in the middle Danian; (2) the main volume of detrital material composing the Novorossiisk–Anapa flysch was formed due to the recycling of Permian–Triassic and younger sequences of the Russian Plate. Identification of inversion tectonics and inverted structures is very important in petroleum exploration and production due to the positive or negative impacts they can exert on the hydrocarbon traps. In order to characterize the occurrence of multi-phase inversion tectonics and its effect in the Rag-e-Sefid Oilfield, located in the southern Dezful Embayment (SW Iran), this research describes the structural style and deformation history through structural and tectono-sedimentary analyses. The results obtained from the interpretation of seismic profiles and the investigation of the geometry of the sedimentary layers across the growth structures indicate that the Rag-e-Sefid anticline is created from multiple fault-propagation folds. The final shape and geometry of the Rag-e-Sefid anticline are affected by the Rag-e-Sefid and Nourooz-Hendijan-Izeh Faults activity. The deformation history in the north-western part of the Rag-e-Sefid anticline is older than the south-eastern part of it. The Rag-e-Sefid Fault set in the north-western and south-eastern parts of the Rag-e-Sefid Oilfield experienced activity at least during seven and four tectonic phases, respectively. Multiple fault-propagation folding and the fold axis rotation in the north-western part of the Rag-e-Sefid anticline controlled by the presence of several décollement surfaces and the occurrence of inversion tectonics along the pre-existing basement structures. Three-phase inversion tectonics along the Nourooz-Hendijan-Izeh Fault and the Rag-e-Sefid Fault set in the north-western part of the Rag-e-Sefid Oilfield occurred at the Late Devonian-Carboniferous (positive inversion), Permian-Early Triassic (negative inversion), and Late Cenomanian-Early Turonian (positive inversion) boundaries and modified the evolutionary history of the sedimentary basin. The inversion affected hydrocarbon trap development at the Late Cretaceous and controlled their current conditions in the southern Dezful Embayment. Based on the hydrocarbon migration in these regions from the Late Miocene to the present day, the N-S trending (Pan Africa trend) north-western part of the Rag-e-Sefid anticline has a larger share of oil and gas compared to the NW-SE trending (Zagros trend) south-eastern part. The results of this study could add data to worldwide examples of the positive impact of tectonic inversion on the hydrocarbon traps development in the foreland of a collisional orogen.
