We report results on the mechanical and structural response to shear deformation of nanodiamond superstructures in interlayer-bonded twisted bilayer graphene (IB-TBG) and interlayer-bonded graphene bilayers with randomly distributed individual interlayer C–C bonds (RD-IBGs) based on molecular-dynamics simulations. We find that IB-TBG nanodiamond superstructures subjected to shear deformation undergo a brittle-to-ductile transition (BDT) with increasing interlayer bond density (nanodiamond fraction). However, RD-IBG bilayer sheets upon shear deformation consistently undergo brittle failure without exhibiting a BDT. We identify, explain, and characterize in atomic-level detail the different failure mechanisms of the above bilayer structures. We also report the dependence of the mechanical properties, such as shear strength, crack initiation strain, toughness, and shear modulus, of these graphene bilayer sheets on their interlayer bond density and find that these properties differ significantly between IB-TBG nanodiamond superstructures and RD-IBG sheets. Our findings show that the mechanical properties of interlayer-bonded bilayer graphene sheets, including their ductility and the type of failure they undergo under shear deformation, can be systematically tailored by controlling interlayer bond density and distribution. • The optimal plastic content for MSW is 6–9 %. • Stress path influences the optimal plastic content. • The influence patterns of particle size distribution on MSW. • Traditional well-graded criteria are unsuitable for MSW. Plastics within municipal solid waste (MSW) are non-degradable. As MSW continues to degrade, the relative content of plastics rises, and particle gradation may also change. Moreover, throughout the landfilling process, MSW is subjected to various stress conditions, potentially influencing its mechanical properties. This study explored the effects of varying plastic contents, different particle gradations, and distinct stress paths on the mechanical properties of MSW, and consolidated drained triaxial tests of 42 groups of reconstituted MSW specimens were conducted. The results showed that there was an optimal plastic content of 6–9 % for MSW, where the shear strength of MSW was higher than that of MSW with other plastic contents. When the stress path changed from TC45 to TC72, the optimal plastic content of MSW changed from 6 % to 9 %. As the plastic content increased, both the cohesion and internal friction angle of the MSW initially increased, then subsequently decreased. The impact of plastic content on cohesion was more pronounced than on the internal friction angle, especially at larger strains. Under various stress paths, MSW with distinct particle size distributions demonstrated diverse stress–strain behaviors. Traditional criteria for evaluating well-graded conditions in soils are not suitable for MSW. The effect of gradation on the cohesion of MSW is essentially due to the predominant role of fiber content; the relationship between gradation and the internal friction angle in MSW is complex and correlates closely with the content of both coarse and fine particles, as well as fibers. Integrated manufacturing techniques have been extensively utilized to assemble thermal structural components made of continuous fiber reinforced silicon carbide composites (C/SiC) to fabricate large and complex components. The mechanical joint, always in terms of C/SiC bolts, become the weakest link in the components. Laminated C/SiC bolts have been invented to meet the requirements of the high temperature applications. Due to the low shear strengths of C/SiC, the threads are prone to be damaged. In order to fully employ the high tensile strength of carbon fibers, core-shell C/SiC bolt is proposed with the shell prepared by woven fiber architecture. Uniform circumferential microstructure of the threaded teeth has been obtained and the corresponding strength has been improved through fiber bridging mechanism. The results shows that the thread pull-off strength is 17.96% greater than that of the laminated thread tooth, and the stud tensile strength is slightly improved up to 2.96%. The stud shear strength is enhanced by 45.29% and 46.88% with unidirectional C/SiC rod and ZrO 2 ceramic rod, respectively. The improvements are mainly caused by the fiber tension-shear coupling effects. Especially the introduction of unidirectional C/SiC rod improves the shear strength of the bolts by fully utilizing the fiber strengthening mechanisms under in-plane shear loading. Having well-aligned and brightly white teeth are the two most preeminent components of an appleaing smile. During the 1980s, John Calamia introduced porcelain laminate veneers at New York University in the United States. Currently, Indirect restoration has become a common method for reconstructing damaged teeth. This involves using dental cement to attach the restoration to the tooth and fill the gap, preventing any displacement. The cementation process of ceramic laminates is a critical final step that requires careful handling. Cement thickness is one factor that influences the shear bond strength of luted veneers. Many factors govern cement thickness, one of them being the cement space provided either digitally or by the die spacer thickness and the number of coats applied. Success in this process has been attributed to a clinician's skill in proper case planning, selecting the appropriate ceramics, materials, and methods for cementation, conservative tooth preparation, impeccable finishing and polishing, and effective planning for ongoing restoration maintenance. Air-fall pyroclastic soil deposits usually display a loose fabric composed of alternating layers of ashes and pumices. Such deposits, when lying on steep slopes, represent a major geohazard due to the occurrence of landslides. This is the case of the carbonate massifs in Campania (southern Italy), a wide landslide-prone area of approximately 400 km2 covered with pyroclastic soils. In such cohesionless deposits, the additional shear strength provided by soil suction in unsaturated conditions is important for ensuring slope stability and can be jeopardized by soil wetting during rainwater infiltration. This paper provides a comprehensive view of the hydraulic and shear strength characteristics of different layers of pyroclastic deposits at different sites in Campania, revealing a broad view of their similarities and differences. To that end, some datasets from previous studies and novel data are gathered, linking the index properties, the hydraulic behavior of the soils and the contribution of suction to the shear strength of the studied materials. Two types of ashes at different positions within the stratigraphic sequence are identified: ashes interbedded between pumice layers, where landslide failure surfaces usually occur, and altered ashes in contact with the bedrock, which affects water leakage from the overlying soil profile. The former show quite uniform characteristics, and this allowed testing some predictive models for the assessment of the unsaturated shear strength of pyroclastic ashes in the absence of direct measurements. In structural concrete, diagonal tension failure is a significant mode of shear failure in slender flexural members. As a result, an accurate estimate of the slender beam's resistance to shear is required. This study presents a statistical characterisation of the uncertainty associated with various resistance predictive models for slender stirrupless beams with a distinct mode of failure (diagonal tension failure). The investigated models include code- and literature-based shear models. Through a comparative analysis of statistical moments and probabilistic representative models of the uncertainty factor using a substantial number of test cases, the study found that the mechanical model proposed by Tran (2020) demonstrated the best consistency in predicting shear strength. It exhibited a mean of 1.02, standard deviation of 0.16, and coefficient of variation of 16%. To effectively manage the uncertainties identified in the EC2 and AS3600–18 shear models, model uncertainty partial and reduction factors following the EN1990 guidelines were proposed for design practices. The investigation of rockfill materials poses challenges due to their large particle size, associated high cost, and long laboratory testing duration. As a result, empirical correlations based on historical experimental studies are commonly used to design and analyse rockfill structures. However, the extensive use of rockfill in a wide range of applications and limited understanding of its mechanical behaviour emphasize the need for further research. These make it necessary to develop a robust technique capable of capturing key parameters such as particle shape and breakage, allowing for the simulation and study of large-scale assemblies with realistic boundary conditions. Given that the behaviour of rockfill is highly scale-dependent, primarily due to particle breakage, the simplified laboratory tests on the scaled-down assemblies can be misleading. Particle breakage is a fundamental phenomenon in the mechanical behaviour of rockfill and significantly affects shear strength, deformability, and porosity under different stress levels. The particle breakage is influenced by factors such as the rockfill's maximum particle size, mineralogy, particle shape, gradation, and confining stresses. This study adopts a computationally efficient breakage method called the Modified Particle Replacement Method (MPRM) based on the Discrete Element Method. A Tile-Based Flexible Membrane (TBFM) for triaxial test modelling has been developed by employing segmental rectangular walls to create a deformable membrane. The effects of critical parameters, including particle shape, confining stress, membrane resolution, degree of flexibility, and the characteristic strength of the particles, are examined. A micromechanics based analytical model under combined loading for unidirectional composites has been developed. The peak compressive load predicted from the combined loading analytical model is compared with the experimental results of carbon epoxy pultruded rod having a volume fraction 60%. The specimens were subjected to torsional load under rotational control and longitudinal compressive load using displacement control. The model captures the compressive strength of the composite subjected to remotely applied shear stress. It is observed that the peak compressive strength of the composite decreases linearly with an increase in shear stress. The analytical modeling results are in good agreement with the experiment data. The analytical model and the experimental results are used to find the effect of shear stress on longitudinal compressive loading. The peak compressive strength caused in the presence of applied shear stress and compressive load and the effect of shear on the compressive strength are predicted using a 2D analytical model in this study. Peat is a highly soft soil that possesses low shear strength due to the presence of organic content and a high amount of moisture content. In the present study, the peat is stabilized to enhance the strength with fly ash with different percentages of 3, 6, 9, 12, and 15% and reinforced with nylon fiber with 0.5, 1.0 and 1.5% to investigate the performance of peat. The strength of fly ash and fiber-treated peat is compared with cement-treated peat. The Compaction, California bearing ratio (CBR), Unconfined compressive strength (UCS) and Unconsolidated Undrained Triaxial (UU Triaxial), Freezing & Thawing (F&T) tests were used for evaluating the strength properties of peat. The UCS value increases to 280 kPa from 60 kPa at 12% of fly ash content, but at 15% cement content it was increased up to 370 kPa. The UCS value of peat stabilized with 12% of fly ash and reinforced with 1% of fiber obtained as 360 kPa. The CBR also increased to 9.3 from 2.5% for stabilized peat (12% fly ash) and reinforced fiber (1%) in soaked condition whereas the CBR value increases up to 9.7% for the case of 15% cement content. It is observed from the freezing and thawing tests, the strength of fly ash stabilized peat-reinforced fiber is decreased by 50%. Whereas the cement-stabilized peat is reducing its strength by 30%. Therefore, 15% of cement can be replaced with 12% of fly ash and 1% of nylon fiber together to make the stabilization effective in normal conditions, but not durable for weathering actions compared to cement-treated peat. Rubber–metal parts inside the car require rubber compounds capable of ensuring optimal function and maximum service life without interface delamination. From this perspective, the strength of the bond which is created by the chemical interaction of rubber and metal by an adhesive is decisive for ensuring the functionality of the entire compound. It is dependent not only on the choice of the right adhesive but also on the rubber compound ingredients and their amount. Here, the influence of different types of carbon blacks as well as different curing systems in combination with a commonly used adhesive is described. The durability of the metal–adhesive–rubber bond is characterized by a specially designed shear strength analysis under quasi-static loading, whereas a significant influence of the structure of the carbon black has shown. The surface of Chinese-manufactured T800 carbon fiber (CF) underwent air ICP plasma treatment to enhance its interfacial bonding with polyimide resin at high temperatures. This treatment significantly improved the high-temperature interlaminar shear strength (ILSS) of the CF/PI composite. Optimal treatment, achieved at a power of 200W, resulted in an ILSS retention rate of 67.34% at 300°C and maintained ILSS at 66.46MPa at 350°C. At this power level, the CF surface developed protrusions, increasing its roughness to 155.70 nm and its oxygen content to 18.32%. Additionally, the ratio of polar to nonpolar groups increased to 0.98, and the ID/IG value rose to 2.781. Under seismic loading, corroded reinforced concrete (RC) columns are prone to brittle shear failure, which poses a significant threat to existing structures. However, due to the mechanical defects and insufficient parameters included in the equations available in codes, the literature exhibits a lack of precision in predicting the shear strength of such columns. In this paper, a shear strength equation for the RC column was established based on the truss-arch model theory. On this basis, the effect of corrosion on key parameters such as the cross-sectional area of rebar, yield strength, compressive strength of concrete, and displacement ductility was fully considered to establish the shear strength equation of corroded RC columns. To assess the accuracy and applicability of the proposed equation, a database consisting of 215 specimen parameters was compiled. Comparative analyses were conducted with existing equations from the literature. The results indicate that the mean values and coefficient of variation for the ratio of calculated values to the tested values of the equation were 1.098 and 0.601, respectively, which proves the equation's high computational accuracy and low dispersion. Consequently, the proposed equation offers a more effective calculation method for predicting and assessing the shear strength of corroded RC columns. Interface bonding between different asphalt pavement layers is crucial in maintaining the integrity of the pavement structure. To improve the interface bonding, bitumen emulsion is commonly used as the tack coat material. However, the bonding performance of conventional bitumen emulsion is limited. This study investigated the possibility of using waterborne epoxy resin modified bitumen emulsion as a novel tack coat material. The resistance to moisture damage of waterborne epoxy resin modified bitumen emulsion was evaluated using the boiling water test, followed by the characterization of the interface adhesion between waterborne epoxy resin modified bitumen emulsion and aggregate using the binder bond strength test. To further determine the interface bonding between different asphalt layers bonded by waterborne epoxy resin modified bitumen emulsion, a two-layer asphalt mixture structure was fabricated, and the shear strength was measured. This study uses fly-ash-based superplasticized geopolymer by adding a naphthalene-centered superplasticizer to the geopolymerized soil. Alkali-binder ratios and alkali-activator ratios are varied simultaneously with a molarity of 10M. The optimum dosages of binder, geopolymer, and superplasticized geopolymer are found from unconfined compression tests. California Bearing Ratio (CBR), pH, consolidation, water-holding capacity, and microstructure tests were performed on optimum dosages. The clayey soil's undrained shear strength and CBR value increased as the geopolymer was superplasticized. The 28-day undrained shear strength of geopolymerized clay was around 300 kPa, attained within three days of the curing period with superplasticized geopolymer. This is because adding a superplasticizer increases the polymerization reaction rate and improves the geopolymer's performance. The maximum undrained shear strength was attained within seven days of the curing period for both cases. The undrained shear strength after a curing period of 7, 14, and 28 days for geopolymer and superplasticized geopolymer was found to be almost the same value, which shows that after seven days, curing has little role in strength improvement. The hydraulic conductivity and coefficient of consolidation of geopolymerized soil increased with the addition of superplasticizer due to the reduction in fine particles and plasticity of the residual soil. Microstructural studies using scanning electron microscope and x-ray diffraction techniques showed an interaction between soil, geopolymer, and superplasticizer, thus confirming the formation of geopolymer gel and increased polymerization rate with the superplasticizer. In our work, 0.5 mol.% TiO2 was added to Ag‐xCuO (x = 2, 4, 8 mol.%) fillers whose compositions at 1050°C were in the L2 single liquid phase region, the boundary of the miscible phase region, and the L1+L2 miscible phase region, respectively. The role of TiO2 was derived by comparing the quenching microstructure of the fillers on the Al2O3 ceramics and the effect on the interfacial microstructure and shear strength of the joints before and after the addition of TiO2. The results showed that the TiO2 would dissolve into the CuO‐rich L1 liquid phase of the filler, leading it to spread outside the molten droplet. When brazing with Ag‐4CuO‐0.5TiO2 filler, the CuO at the joint interface almost completely disappeared, and the shear strength of the joint was significantly reduced. In contrast, the joint strength showed a small increase when using Ag‐8CuO‐0.5TiO2 filler, as the excess CuO at the interface of the brazed joint was reduced. When the filler composition was in the L2 single liquid phase region, CuO was diffusely distributed throughout the molten droplet. TiO2 was hardly contacted with CuO and its addition had no significant effect on the interfacial microstructure and the shear strength of the joints. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Disregarding the partial drainage of saturated clay foundations during staged construction of a building would underestimate the calculated short-term bearing capacity of foundations, resulting in imposing an extra burden on clients due to prescribing soil improvement. This paper aims to investigate the effect of partial drainage of saturated clay foundations subjected to different loading patterns on the mechanical response. Therefore, two main stages, including determination of shear strength parameters from triaxial simulations and foundation analysis based on the acquired shear parameters, were considered. In triaxial models, a change in the consolidation phase was proposed to determine more realistic shear strength parameters in a way that reflects the partial consolidation through the staged construction. It was found that drainage during construction could significantly increase the short-term bearing capacity up to 70% in comparison with the unconsolidated undrained triaxial test condition. Moreover, a well-justified equation and stepwise method were proposed to estimate the short-term bearing capacity of clay foundations with respect to the partial drainage during construction. Practical Applications: In civil engineering, there are several cases in which superstructures should be constructed over saturated clay foundations. Therefore, the bearing capacity of these foundations should be determined and controlled in short-term (end of construction) and long-term (during service life of the structure) conditions. Owing to the fact that during staged construction of superstructures, a sort of partial drainage occurs, estimating the short-term bearing capacity of saturated clay foundations using the parameters derived from the undrained unconsolidated triaxial test could be very conservative, resulting in imposing an extra burden on clients due to prescribing unnecessary soil improvement. This paper by a combination of triaxial and foundation analysis investigated the effect of partial drainage of saturated clay foundations subjected to different loading patterns on the mechanical response. An attempt was made to provide engineers and designers with an appropriate relationship and a stepwise method so that they could determine the short-term bearing capacity of foundations considering the partial drainage in the common geotechnical practices. Reinforcement of soils with fibers generally increases the mechanical properties of the fiber-reinforced soil (FRS) system. However, published literature is limited to investigating the undrained response of clay and synthetic fibers, with few studies targeting natural clay and natural fibers under drained conditions. There is a need to study the response of fiber-reinforced clay systems under drained conditions to assess long-term stability. This paper investigated the drained shear strength and durability of clays reinforced with natural hemp fibers using isotropically consolidated drained triaxial tests, in which the fiber content, confining pressure, and compaction water content were varied. Results showed that the incorporation of hemp fibers improved the deviatoric stress at failure by up to 60%, which increased the drained cohesion and friction angle of the FRS by 7–10 kPa and 3–7°, respectively. The increase in cohesive intercept was not affected by the compaction water content, while the increase in friction angle was pronounced in specimens compacted at optimum water content (w = 18%). Durability tests showed that the improvement in strength due to hemp fibers diminishes after 3 weeks of curing prior to drained testing, indicating the dramatic negative impact of degradation of natural fibers on the mechanical performance of fiber-reinforced clay and the need for industrial treatment of the fiber. Risk assessment of seismically loaded slopes is often a prerequisite for guiding decision-making and mitigation, which could be more difficult to quantify when taking the spatial variability of material properties into account. In this study, a random finite-element limit analysis (RFELA) is developed to assess the risk of a seismically loaded slope where the undrained shear strength of soils is spatially variable with depth. The nonstationary random field is first introduced to model the linearly increasing undrained shear strength. Then, finite-element limit analysis (FELA) is employed to evaluate the seismic stability and consequence, in which the seismic loading is characterized by the pseudostatic approach with a range of horizontal seismic coefficients. Finally, the quantitative risk assessment is conducted based on Monte Carlo simulations. The results show that using the nonstationary random field to model the soil spatial variability could significantly reduce the risk compared with the stationary random field, which matches better with the site-specific data. The risk of the slope failure increases with the increase in the seismic coefficient. In addition, the effects of the correlation structure of the undrained shear strength, which includes the coefficient of variation (COV) and autocorrelation distance, on the risk assessment are studied by parametric analyses. Climate change is increasing the frequency and intensity of extreme rainfall events, which aggravate the threat to the safety of natural and man-made slopes. There is growing interest in the role of rainfall characteristics in these slope failures. Most of previous studies treated the rainfall individually or as cumulative value and used hypothetical rainfall temporal patterns with no association with actual physical failures. In this study, the two deadly landslides in Sau Mau Ping, Hong Kong, in June 1972 and August 1976, which caused 165 casualties, are revisited. An intriguing question that has long been overlooked is posed: why the slopes that withstood the 1972 rainfall failed in the 1976 rainfall, given that the rainfall intensity of the latter event was only half of the former? Based on an extensive review of the forensic reports and relevant studies on the failure events, numerical modeling is carried out by a combination of seepage analysis with stability analysis and unsaturated shear strength theory. Focus is placed on the geological and hydrological settings and the rainfall characteristics, particularly the temporal pattern of the antecedent and main rainfall, to look into the causes and mechanisms for these failures. The scarcity of comprehensive data on the shear properties of reinforced GP‐concrete beams without shear reinforcement has hindered their widespread use, mainly due to challenges in predicting their shear performance. This study examines the influence of incorporating up to 15% waste glass powder (GP) with two separate particle size categories: GP‐A (55 to 135 μm) and GP‐B (finer than 55 μm) as a cement replacement on the 180‐day shear performance of reinforced concrete beams with varying cement content and without stirrups. To accomplish this, a total of 14 beams were used, all sharing identical dimensions measuring 200 mm × 250 mm × 2000 mm. The aforementioned parameters were investigated for their effects on the shear performance of beams, including crack patterns, modes of failure, load–deflection behavior, and strength capacities at different loading stages. Furthermore, this investigation explores the applicability of the most commonly used design codes of practice for predicting the shear strength of reinforced GP‐modified concrete beams. These codes are typically employed to design the shear strength of reinforced conventional concrete shallow beams without shear reinforcement. The study's findings indicate that the impact of GP particle size on the shear performance of beams with the same GP content is almost negligible. Additionally, the study found that incorporating GP into concrete beams does not have any negative effects on their cracking load capacity, shear strength, or flexural cracking load capacity. In fact, it can even improve the latter. A comparison of experimental results with predictions from the design codes revealed that both the CEB‐FIP (1990) equation and the ACI equations provided safe estimates of shear strength for the tested beams. However, the CEB‐FIP (1990) equation yielded predictions with a lower mean, standard deviation, and coefficient of variation compared with the ACI equations, suggesting a higher level of accuracy in its estimates. This paper introduces a novel closed‐form equation (surrogate model) for approximating the Morgenstern–Price estimate of the factor of safety of homogeneous dry finite slopes with circular failure surfaces. Unlike typically used methods, the proposed equation does not require the definition of a critical failure surface, splitting the soil mass into slices, or the iterative reduction of soil resistance to the limit state. It can be easily programmed into calculators or computers and accurately determines the minimum factor of safety based on the shear strength parameters and slope geometry—meaning that it is ideally suited for integration into reliability calculations. The equation is determined parametrically for various soil parameters and slope geometry using the Morgenstern–Price method and compares favorably with conventional techniques, such as slope stability charts, limit equilibrium, and strength reduction methods (SRM). From a practical perspective, the proposed equation greatly simplifies the analysis of the slope stability as the creation of a numerical model is not required and is suited to use in the feasibility stage of a project, for example, for large linear infrastructure projects with differing slope geometries or in situations where a quick assessment is desired. The generalized model and parameter equation for the internal fracture surface of tensile type anchor cable anchorage section are constructed, and the calculation model of ultimate bearing capacity is derived based on the principle of limit equilibrium. The shape of the internal fracture surface in the anchorage section and the expression of its parameter equation are experimentally studied, and the variation law of the parameter equation and fracture range with the diameter of the anchor cable and confining pressure is analyzed. The parameter equation is substituted into the calculation model to realize the calculation and verification of the model. Through theoretical derivation, a calculation model of ultimate bearing capacity of anchor cable is obtained, which comprehensively considers the average shear strength of anchorage section, the shape of fracture surface, fracture range and confining pressure. The tests show that according to the magnitude of the confining pressure on the anchorage section, the internal fracture surface takes on two shapes: cylindrical and trumpet‐shaped, the parameter equation of trumpet‐shaped fracture surface obeys logarithmic distribution approximately. The coefficient a decreases with the increase of confining pressure but increases with the increase of anchor cable diameter, the constant b increases with the increase of confining pressure but decreases with the increase of anchor cable diameter. The ranges of horizontal and vertical fracture decrease with the increase of confining pressure, and increase with the increase of anchor cable diameter. Reliable metallurgical bonding between Al2O3 ceramic and copper was achieved by vacuum brazing using Ag–23Cu–14.5In–3.3Ti (wt.%) alloy. The representative interfacial structure of the joint was Al2O3/Ti3(Cu,Al)3O + γ‐TiO/Ag‐based solid solution + (Cu,Ag)7In3 + Ag–Cu eutectic + Cu‐based solid solution/copper. The interface microstructure evolved with process parameters, including the formation of γ‐TiO and Ti3(Cu,Al)3O, as evidenced by microstructural analysis and etched surface morphology. The relationship between fracture path and shear strength was established by observing the fracture morphology and performing shear strength tests on joints with various process parameters, utilizing the degree of the Ag‐based solid solution loss and the thickness of the reaction layer as evaluative factors. When brazed at 760 or 780°C for 20 min using a 100 µm brazing alloy foil, the brazed joints demonstrated a peak shear strength of 215 ± 25 MPa, and the fracture predominantly occurred in the Al2O3 matrix and Ti3(Cu,Al)3O layer. In order to improve the mechanical properties of the ultra‐high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) fiber‐reinforced high‐density polyethylene (HDPE) composite, carbon nanotube (CNT) was grafted on the UHMWPE fiber. The UHMWPE fiber/HDPE composite was prepared by injection molding process, and the effects of CNT contents on the mechanical properties of composite materials were studied. The results show that the mass fraction of CNT will significantly affect the mechanical properties of the composite. When the CNT content is 4 wt%, the tensile strength, tensile modulus, flexural strength, flexural modulus, and impact strength of the UHMWPE fiber/treated CNT/HDPE composite increased compared to the UHMWPE fiber/CNT/HDPE composite and UHMWPE fiber/HDPE composite. When the CNT content is 4 wt%, the above‐mentioned performance is the best. Pull‐out and fracture, bridging effect, and crack deflection effect are the main mechanisms of CNTs in UHMWPE fiber/HDPE composites. AbstractFibre reinforced metal laminates (FMLs) are widely used in various fields due to their excellent properties. However, the weak interlayer properties of FMLs limit their applications. In this paper, the interlayer properties of FMLs are enhanced by anodising the 2024-T3 aluminium alloy layer in FMLs or by epoxy matrix modification of graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs). The effect of both synergistic impacts on the interlayer properties of most FMLs is investigated. The FMLs were manufactured using the wet lay-up technique using 2024-T3 aluminium alloy, E51 epoxy and EW100 glass fibre. The results showed that the type I fracture toughness, tensile strength, flexural strength, interlayer shear strength and single layer shear strength of FMLs after anodic oxidation treatment were increased by 406.4%, 10.3%, 18.3%, 42.6% and 28.3%, respectively, compared with those of pure FMLs. The type I fracture toughness, tensile strength, flexural strength, interlayer shear strength and single layer shear strength of the GNPs-modified FMLs matrix were increased by 280.4%, 3.7%, 6.8%, 34.5% and 19.1%, respectively, compared with those of pure FMLs. Moreover, the synergistic effect of FMLs indicates that the simultaneous anodic oxidation and GNPs modification of FMLs can lead to the best mechanical properties of FMLs. Microscopic images and schematics illustrate the toughening mechanism of anodising and GNPs, including the enhancement of aluminium/resin interface and fibre/resin interface and the enhancement of resin matrix properties. To enhance the performance of carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP), it is crucial to establish robust interactions between epoxy and carbon fiber fabric (CFF). Herein, CFF was treated by an optimized H2O2/H2O/O3 oxidation method. The chemical and physical properties of the treated CFFs were meticulously characterized. For comparison, CFF, O3 treated CFF, and H2O/O3 treated CFFs were also examined. It was found that H2O2/H2O/O3 oxidized CFF more effectively than either O3 or H2O/O3. Reactive O groups were extensively grafted onto the surface of the H2O2/H2O/O3 oxidized CFF, leading to an increase in surface energy. Additionally, numerous defects were introduced on the surface of the H2O2/H2O/O3 oxidized CFF, significantly enhancing its surface roughness. Consequently, the interlaminar shear strength of H2O2/H2O/O3 oxidized CFF reinforced epoxy composite reached 63.31 ± 2.50 MPa, which is 43.3% higher than that of CFF reinforced epoxy composite. The fracture surface morphology and differential scanning calorimetry studies confirmed the presence of strong interfacial chemical interactions, while the increased surface roughness ensured robust interfacial physical interactions. Based on these findings, the mechanisms of the H2O2/H2O/O3 oxidized CFF reinforcing epoxy were proposed. The present work aims to give out some ideas for the fabrication of green and advanced CFRP. Thermal expansion molding process (TEMP) is a sophisticated molding technique for creating complex sandwich composites. The core key of TEMP is a high‐performance, thermally expandable resin film. In this study, the epoxy resin is used to create a specific crosslinking network that can provide the support force required for the stable molding of the vesicles during the expansion process of the foaming agent. The curing process of the resin was determined by analyzing the change in the exothermic amount of the epoxy resin during the curing process and the flow behavior of the resin. The pore size distribution of the epoxy foam was investigated, and the expansion force of the thermally expandable resin was tested. The TEMP molding process was compared with the vacuum bag press molding (VBPM) process. The TEMP molding technique increased tensile and compressive strength by about 25%, flexural strength by 34.5%, and shear strength by 54.5%. Finally, the section on microanalysis of the comparative materials and the short beam bending experiments of the sandwich structure provides a theoretical foundation for developing complicated sandwich structures. In this study, aramid fiber (AF)/phenolic resin prepreg was fabricated by impregnating low content carbon nanotube (CNT)‐reinforced phenolic resin with aramid fabric through a two‐roll pressing process. Both non‐functionalized and carboxylic‐functionalized CNTs (CNTs and CNTs‐COOH) were used for comparison study. For each of the formulations, composite laminate was made by a hot‐pressing process with a number of the prepregs stacked together. Mechanical properties and ballistic performance of the laminates and material failure mechanisms were evaluated and analyzed. Both non‐functionalized and CNTs‐COOH can effectively improve the mechanical and ballistic performance of the laminates. With CNTs‐COOH reinforcement, better results were achieved. As compared with the laminate without CNT reinforcement, 1.0 wt% CNTs‐COOH‐reinforced laminate showed 19.41%, 22.29%, and 45.83% improvement in tensile, flexural, and adhesion shear strength, respectively. The ballistic test results showed that the V50 and the specific energy absorption (SEA) were increased by 5.77% and 13.44%, respectively. The reliable jointing of SiCf/SiC is considered to be a key factor limiting the application in the field of nuclear cladding. In this work, a jointing layer with interconnected SiC nanowires (SiCNWs) toughening network is prepared by a typical two‐step routine. The high‐viscosity slurry containing the precursor is pyrolyzed to form a porous SiC‐based jointing layer, which is then densified by chemical vapor infiltration. Besides, SiC powders are introduced into the slurry to further increase the density of the jointing layer. The homogeneous SiC jointing material enables the strength and effectively avoids the mismatch between the thermal expansion coefficient of the jointing layer and SiCf/SiC composites, and the apparent shear strength of the jointing specimen reaches 7.211 MPa. It is found that the joint with SiCNWs shows better shear strength than the joint without SiCNWs, and the improved mechanical properties could be attributed to the pull‐out and bridging of SiCNWs. The evolution of coastal wetlands is a complex process which is difficult to forecast, made more complicated by the addition of changing climatic conditions. Here, long term ecological and geomorphological data are coupled to geotechnical measurements at a coastal wetland in North Inlet estuary, South Carolina. The coupled methodology is presented and discussed in context of understanding coastal wetland system evolution in a changing climate. Specifically, the root shear strength of Spartina alterniflora across a range of elevations was investigated using a cone penetrometer test. Elevation, shear strength, and biomass are shown to be critically interconnected. Root strength was shown to decrease with increased inundation time and decreased elevation (i.e., mudflats). Conversely, the data set illustrates the importance of maintaining key elevation ranges in relation to sea‐level to optimize wetland resilience. We set out to incorporate measurements from multiple disciplines to better understand how these wetlands evolve under these conditions. Underwater adhesive superoleophobic coatings are in high demand for underwater activities. However, hydrogel coatings have limited adhesiveness for long periods. In this work, a novel approach is presented that employs synergistic segment orientation and covalent anchoring strategies to fabricate superoleophobic hydrogel coatings on different substrates without prior surface treatments. The coating demonstrated remarkable long‐lasting superoleophobic properties even in extreme underwater environments. It also exhibited strong adhesion with a shear strength of up to 5 MPa and antiswelling and antibiofouling properties, making it highly effective for applications in antiliquid adhesion, crude oil self‐cleaning, and antibiofouling. The simplicity, ease of preparation, and exceptional performance of the hydrogel coating provide a notable example for the synergistic segment orientation and covalent anchoring of hydrogel‐based underwater coatings. The high-strength joining of reaction-bonded silicon carbide (RBSC) is pivotal for its application in the semiconductor field. In this paper, the wetting and joining mechanism of Ti–Si eutectic alloy on RBSC were investigated. The contact angles observed between Ti–Si eutectic alloy and RBSC were approximately 1.9°, indicating the favorable wettability and demonstrating the feasibility of bonding RBSC joints. The temperature bending strength of the joints initially increased and then decreased as the brazing temperature increased. Moreover, the shear strength of approximately 107.38 ± 5.56 MPa was achieved at 1350 °C for 30 min. Notably, the diffusion and amalgamation of atoms, lead to the establishment of stronger bonds between adjacent particles. Thus, the Ti–Si eutectic alloy brazing filler formed a direct connection with the RBSC matrix, with Si 2 Ti infiltrating into the base metal on both sides. Zr-4 alloys were vacuum brazed using Ag–Cu–Ti filler metal. The effect of brazing temperature on the microstructure evolution, shear strength and corresponding fracture behavior of the brazed joints was investigated. The typical phases at the brazing temperature of 800, 840 and 930∘C were inferred to be three different microstructures, i.e., a mixture of (Cu, Ti) phases and Ag-rich phase, Ag-rich phase and brittle intermetallic compound (IMC) AgZr, and a uniformly mixed morphology of CuZr and AgZr. And the width of the whole brazed seam increased from 78.4μm to 118.8μm. Meanwhile, the shear strength of the brazed joints first increased and then decreased followed by a small increase. The maximum shear strength of 138MPa was obtained at the treatment of 800∘C for 10min. The fracture morphology exhibited typical brittle fracture characteristics, and the cracks initiated from the interface of the brazed joints, and propagated into the intermediate zones. AbstractMultiple studies confirm that determining the liquefaction resistance of sand-silt mixtures is more intricate compared to pure sand. Furthermore, it has been observed that the global void ratio fails to accurately predict the behavior of silty sand soils due to the fines particles, which can occupy voids between sand grains without significantly contributing to resisting external forces. To address this, a new parameter called equivalent void ratio (e*) has been proposed to better forecast the response of medium sand-fines mixtures. To investigate this further, a series of compression triaxial tests were conducted on mixtures comprising medium sand with low plastic fines. These mixtures were prepared in the laboratory with an initial relative density and subjected to varying confining pressures. The test results were utilized to assess the undrained shear strength of medium sand-silt mixtures based on the equivalent void ratio (e*) and to establish the equivalent granular steady-state line, which serves as a reference for calculating the equivalent state parameter (ψ*). Analysis of the obtained data suggests a correlation between the equivalent void ratio (e*) and the equivalent state parameter (ψ*) with the grading characteristics (such as D10, D50, Cu, D10R, D50R, and CUR) of the medium silty sand. Non-coplanar and discontinuously jointed rock masses are more complex than coplanar and discontinuously jointed rock masses. The mechanical properties and propagation mechanisms of non-coplanar and discontinuous joints were studied via direct shear tests with microscopic numerical simulation experiments. The numerical simulation tests were performed under different normal stresses, joint inclination angles, and shear rates. The numerical experimental results show that the microscale failure of non-coplanar and discontinuously jointed rock masses is mainly caused by tensile cracks. Additionally, when the peak shear stress is reached, the growth rate of cracks increases rapidly, and the number of cracks increases with increasing normal stress. The shear strength of non-coplanar and discontinuously jointed rock masses increases with increasing normal stress. Under the same normal stress, the variation curves of the shear strength of non-coplanar and discontinuously jointed rock masses with respect to the dip angle exhibit an "S"-shaped nonlinear pattern. Rock masses with joint inclination angles of approximately 15° and 65° have minimum and maximum shear strengths, respectively. The joint dip angle has a significant impact on the final failure mode of rock bridges in the rock mass. As the joint dip angle increases, the final failure modes of rock bridges change from "end-to-end" connection to a combination of "head-to-head" and "tail-to-tail" connections. The shear rate has a certain impact on the peak shear stress, but the impact is not significant. The spatial distribution of the tensile force chains changes as shearing progresses, and stress concentration occurs at the tips of the original joints, which is the reason for the development of long tensile cracks in the deeper parts. AbstractThis mini-review investigates the effect of numerous surface treatments and the influence of incorporating organic/inorganic nanofillers into polymeric adhesives on the shear behaviour of adhesive-bonded single-lap joints. Surface treatment of the adherend surface and nanofiller reinforcement on the adhesive has enhanced the shear strength of adhesive-bonded joints. This study examined numerous nanofillers (CBs, GNPs, MWCNTs, CNH, MMT, SNPs, RGO, GO, GNOP, and ceramic fillers) reinforcement with varying weight percentages (0–3%) and surface preparation techniques such as grid blasting, acetone cleaning, sandpaper roughing, acid etching, etc. It has been observed that the surface treatment techniques and the addition of nanofillers enhanced the cohesive and adhesive forces between the adherend and the adhesive, causing the adherend and adhesive to mechanically interlock in the overlapping zone. Moreover, 10 phr of organo-modified montmorillonite (MMT) filled epoxy exhibited excellent shear strength among the myriad organic/inorganic nano filler-modified adhesive joints. In this work, the three‐dimensional stability of deep tunnel faces is evaluated in rock masses characterized by the generalized Hoek–Brown (H–B) criterion from the perspective of the limit analysis theorem. Considering that underground engineering is gradually developing towards larger burial depths and larger sizes, and the tensile strength of rocks is usually overestimated, the concept of tension cutoff (T‐C) is introduced to substitute the parabolic form of the H–B envelope in the tensile region with a circular arc. The multitangent technique is used to piecewise approximate the H–B envelope, instead of the conventional linear substitution, accounting for the nonlinear dependence of the shear strength on the pressure. Meanwhile, the earthquake loading is considered by the classic pseudostatic method. The tunnel face stability is measured by a stability number, which is calculated based on a newly developed multicone failure mechanism. Parameter studies indicate that the T‐C has almost no impact on the critical support pressure, while has a significant effect on the critical stability number, especially in the presence of earthquakes. Nearly all stress points back‐calculated from the rupture angles fall within the T‐C region, except for the first stress point associated with the first segment. Interestingly, the influence of the geological strength index (GSI) on the face stability is inverse to that of mi due to the brittleness of rocks. A carbon fiber‐tannic acid‐silicon dioxide (CF‐TA‐SiO2) reinforcement with a "diatom frustule‐like" structure was built via biomimetic mineralization to boost the performance of carbon fiber/epoxy resin (CF/EP) composites. As a bio‐based polyphenolic compound, TA was used to modulate the mineralization of SiO2, and the easy agglomeration of SiO2 was effectively avoided. The interfacial adhesion of the CF/EP composites was considerably heightened by improving the roughness and wettability of CF as well as by increasing the interfacial interactions between CF and the EP. Compared with the pristine composites, the flexural strength, interlaminar shear strength and interfacial shear strength of the CF‐TA‐SiO2/EP composites increased by 41.2%, 56.6%, and 50.4%, respectively. Moreover, the introduction of Si‐O‐Si and C‐O‐Si bonds at the interface led to a remarkable improvement in the hydrothermal aging resistance. This research provides a novel interfacial design for advanced composites with excellent interfacial properties, which broadens the application of these composites in hygrothermal environments. In recent years, the growing environmental awareness has prompted increased attention towards the substitution of nonrecyclable thermosetting epoxy resin composite materials with recyclable thermoplastic composite materials. The objective of this study is to utilize a laboratory‐made polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA)/methyl methacrylate (MMA) binary liquid resin (PMBLR) to prepare thermoplastic resin/glass fiber (GF) composite materials using the vacuum‐assisted perfusion method. These composites are then compared with GF‐reinforced thermosetting epoxy resin composites. The investigation reveals a significant influence of benzoyl peroxide (BPO) content on the mechanical properties of pure MMA and PMBLR casting resins, which also incorporate N‐methyl‐N‐((1‐methyl‐1H‐indol‐3‐yl) methyl) aniline (DMA) as redox composite initiators. The optimal mechanical properties for both types of casting resins are achieved at a DMA:BPO:MMA ratio of 0.5:1.2:100. Additionally, at a PMMA concentration of 24 wt% in PMBLR under this specific initiator ratio, the composites demonstrate the most desirable properties. Furthermore, a comparative analysis of PMBLR/GF composites and epoxy/GF composites indicates that the former exhibit superior 90° tensile strength, bending strength, and short beam shear strength. The fracture morphology analysis highlights discernible micro‐ductile fracture characteristics in PMBLR/GF composites, distinguishing them from epoxy/GF composites. Dynamic thermomechanical analysis (DMA) results further reveal a higher storage modulus and loss factor in PMBLR/GF composites when compared to epoxy/GF composites. This study is mainly aimed at exploring effects of the aging-induced chemical decomposition of Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) on the shear response and physical properties of locally available MSW of Fars province, Iran, at its in-situ condition. To this end, a large direct shear device (1×1×1.1 m3) is designed, fabricated and employed to evaluate the parameters of the failure envelop at plane strain condition representing slopes of engineered landfills. Bulk disturbed samples of fresh MSW are exhumed from an operational disposal site to be implemented into the study and subsequently remolded in the large-scale shear box. Four drained shear tests are performed under a variety of vertical stresses. Next, intact components of MSW are landfilled over a period of 3, 6, and 9 months. Similar shear experiments are conducted at the end of each mentioned time interval. Mechanical behavior of MSW is completely frictional and internal friction angle of the studied MSW non-linearly increases with time from 44.2º to 55.7º. The stress-strain response is almost bilinear over a wide range of displacement. The European Fusion Reactor (DEMO, Demonstration Power Plant) relies significantly on joining technologies in its design. Current research within the EUROfusion framework focuses on developing materials for the first wall and divertor applications, emphasizing the need for suitable joining processes, particularly for tungsten. The electric field-assisted sintering technique (FAST) emerges as a promising alternative due to its high current density, enabling rapid heating and cooling rates for fast sintering or joining. In this study, FAST was employed to join tungsten and EUROFERE97 steel, the chosen materials for the first wall, using 50-µm-thick Cu foils as interlayers. Three distinct joining conditions were tested at 980 °C for 2, 5, and 9 min at 41.97 MPa to optimize joint properties and assess FAST parameters influence. Hardness measurements revealed values around 450 HV0.1 for tungsten, 100 HV0.1 for copper, and 390 HV0.1 for EUROFER97 under all joining conditions. Increasing bonding time improved joint continuity along the EUROFER97/Cu and W/Cu interfaces. Notably, the 5 min bonding time resulted in the highest shear strength, while the 9 min sample exhibited reduced strength, possibly due to Kirkendall porosity accumulation at the EUROFER97/Cu interface. In order to investigate the influence of a hot-pressing process on the mechanical properties of ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) fiber non-woven fabrics with stretch and in-plane shear, UHMWPE non-woven fabric samples were prepared by adjusting the temperature, time, and pressure of the hot-pressing process, and mechanical property tests were carried out so as to clarify the influence of the hot-pressing process on the mechanical properties of the samples. The results show that the hot-pressing process mainly affects the silk–glue bonding strength of the samples; in the test range, with the increase in hot-pressing temperature and time, the tensile strength and in-plane shear strength of the samples increase and then decrease, and the best mechanical properties are obtained at 130 °C and 7 min of hot pressing, respectively; at 130 °C, the in-plane shear strength is 39.94 MPa and the tensile strength is 595.43 MPa; at 7 min, the in-plane shear strength is 63.0 MPa and the tensile strength is 643.30 MPa; with the increase in the hot-pressing pressure, the in-plane shear strength of the samples increases and then decreases, and the highest is 52.60 MPa, achieved at 8 MPa; in the range of 5–8 MPa, the tensile strength of the specimens did not change significantly, and increased significantly at 9 MPa, reaching a maximum strength of 674.55 MPa. The concentration of heavy metals in soil layers has increased due to the rapid development of the industry. Lead and zinc are two frequent heavy metal contaminants in soil. This paper aims to study the effect of these types of contaminants on different fines, including kaolinite, bentonite, and zeolite mixed with sand. First, mixtures of sand and kaolinite, bentonite, and zeolite were prepared, then they were contaminated by two contaminants of lead and zinc nitrates, separately. Consolidated undrained triaxial tests, Soil Conservation Service (SCS) double hydrometer tests, scanning electron microscope (SEM), Atterberg limits, and pH determination tests were conducted on the soil samples to investigate the changes in the strength and microstructure in the presence of heavy metals. In general, triaxial test results showed that various parameters influence the strength results of these heavy metal-contaminated sandy soil samples such as type, percentage, and structure of the fine portion, type, and concentration of contaminants, bonding mechanism of fine grains, and ion exchange capacity. For instance, in the presence of kaolinite (and kaolinite-zeolite mixtures), contamination with lead decreased the strength of soil samples, but in the soil mixtures containing bentonite (and bentonite-kaolinite mixtures), an opposite trend was seen. The plasticity index of mixtures containing kaolinite and zeolite increased in the presence of heavy metal contaminants, but it decreased when the fine portion of the soil was bentonite. Heavy metal contaminants decreased the pH of all soil mixtures and made them to be acidic. The results of the SCS double hydrometer test and SEM indicated that contaminated kaolinite and zeolite soil mixtures have a dispersed structure, while bentonite soil mixtures are not dispersive. The shear strength of a jointed rock mass is a key factor for evaluating the overall stability of an engineering rock mass. Fillers have an obvious weakening effect on the shear strength of a jointed rock mass In this paper, experiments are conducted to study the mechanism by which the shear strength of a jointed rock mass filled with gypsum is weakened under hydraulic coupling effects. The experimental results are as follows. (1) During the shear process, a multipeak phenomenon can be observed in the shear displacement–shear load curve, and the existence of backfill delays the occurrence of peak shear stress. (2) The thickness of the filler obviously weakens the peak shear resistance of the rock mass by up to 53.65%. The reduction rate of the peak shear stress is positively correlated with the normal stress. In terms of the shear strength, the greater the thickness of the filler is, the greater the cohesion and the smaller the internal friction angle of the jointed rock mass. (3) The sensitivity of the peak shear stress of the filled jointed rock mass to the water content of the filler is lower than that to the thickness of the filler. The maximum reduction rate of the peak shear stress of the rock mass caused by the water content of the filler is 54.55%. The study of the geomechanical behavior of marine clays is a basic requirement for project optimization of the oil and natural gas industry. As part of a large-scale project, this study explored the effects of moisture content, temperature, and rate effects using laboratory vane shear tests. A series of results has helped in the identification of the effects of ground freezing on the undrained shear strength. For temperatures below freezing (-2.0 °C) the undrained shear strength increases with increasing water content and decreases with increasing shear rates for applied angular velocities in the range of 0.0025-0.015 rpm. Apparently, with the freezing of pore fluids, the shear strength is partially governed by the strength of the ice-soil particle bonds. The increase in shear rate appears to facilitate the breakage of the ice bonds and afterwards the ice crystals reducing the viscous effects on the mobilized shear strength. Conversely, samples tested at temperatures above freezing show an increase in undrained shear strength with the increase in the imposed angular velocity and decreases with increasing soil moisture. Based on these studies, it is concluded that rate effects should be coupled to the influence of temperature and moisture content in the design of offshore structures. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
