The Cenozoic stratigraphy of the Zagros records the ongoing collision between the Arabian and Eurasian Plates and the closure of NeoTethys. A Paleogene NW‐SE trending foreland basin was inherited from a Late Cretaceous precursor. Widespread progradation into the foredeep was a feature of both margins which, allied to ongoing tectonism, had by the late Eocene led to the narrowing and subsequent division of the foredeep into the Lurestan – Khuzestan and Lengeh Troughs, separated by the northward continuation of the rejuvenated Qatar‐Fars Arch. This sub‐division strongly influenced subsequent deposition and the petroleum geology of the area. In addition, the diachronous nature of the Arabian – Eurasian collision led to strong diachroneity in lithostratigraphic units along the length of the Zagros. Hence its petroleum geology is best understood within a regional sequence stratigraphic framework. This study identifies three tectono‐megasequences (TMS 10, TMS 11a, TMS 11b) and multiple depositional sequences. The Cenozoic contains a world class hydrocarbon province with prolific oil reservoirs in the Oligo‐Miocene Asmari Formation sealed by the evaporite‐dominated Gachsaran Formation, mostly contained within giant NW‐SE trending "whaleback" anticlines concentrated in the Dezful Embayment. Reservoirs in the SW are dominantly siliciclastic or comprise mixed siliciclastics and carbonates, whereas those to the east and NE are dominated by fractured carbonates. There remains untested potential in stratigraphic traps, especially in deeperwater sandstone reservoirs deposited along the SW margin of the foredeep. Late Miocene to Pliocene charge to the Asmari reservoirs was mostly from Aptian – Albian Kazhdumi Formation source rocks. In some fields, an additional component was from organic‐rich late Eocene to earliest Oligocene Pabdeh Formation source rocks confined to the narrowing Lurestan – Khuzestan Trough. Where mature, the latter source rock is also a potential unconventional reservoir target, although the prospective area is limited due to recent uplift and erosion. The early Paleozoic Era (∼540–420 Ma) was an interval of profound biogeochemical changes including increasing oxygen (O 2) and the onset of bioturbation (sediment mixing by animals). It is hypothesized that incipient bioturbation caused a monotonic decrease in sedimentary burial of pyrite (FeS 2), which would have slowed atmospheric O 2 accumulation. However, pyrite accumulation can exhibit complex responses to dynamic, low-O 2 environmental conditions. To assess pyrite burial in a potential modern analogue to early Paleozoic environments, we collected sediment cores from the Chesapeake Bay, an estuary with multiple gradients in sulfate concentration, hypoxia intensity, organic carbon flux and lability, and bioturbation. Results indicate that pyrite accumulation is maximized not under strong sulfate depletion in highly reducing sediments, but rather in sediments that occupy the mid-range of sulfate–chloride ratios. This probably occurs through efficient replenishment of pore water sulfate and/or through the generation of sulfur redox intermediates, which promote pyrite formation via the polysulfide reaction pathway. In light of these results and in contrast to earlier models, we hypothesize that mild early Paleozoic bioturbation temporarily increased pyrite burial efficiency by stimulating higher sulfate reduction rates and increasing sedimentary sulfide retention. Compiled sulfur and carbon data from a geochemical database indicate that median sulfur-carbon ratios of fine-grained marine siliciclastic rocks increased from the Ediacaran through the Ordovician, then decreased and became much less variable from the Silurian onward. Thus, the Cambrian and Ordovician Periods may constitute a distinct interval of the Proterozoic-Phanerozoic transition in which bioturbation temporarily accelerated O 2 buildup. The depositional ages and provenance of the Paleozoic Araba and Naqus Formations along the northern Gondwanan margin in Egypt have remained uncertain due to a lack of index fossils. Resolving this issue is crucial for understanding regional geology during deposition and subsequent tectonic development. We integrate detailed facies analysis, anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility (AMS), paleomagnetism, and mineralogical data to elucidate the genesis and depositional ages of the Araba and Naqus Formations. Petrographic analyses identified seven distinct facies types, providing insights into sedimentary textures, maturity, and sources, with contributions from igneous and metamorphic sources indicated by heavy minerals. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis identified accessory minerals such as quartz, goethite, kaolinite, hematite, and anatase. Paleomagnetism isolated two magnetic components (CA and CN) providing the first robust paleo pole positions at Lat. = 70.8° N, Long. = 308.2° E and Lat. = 37.8° N, Long. = 233.1° E, indicating Cambrian and Carboniferous ages for the Araba and Naqus formations, respectively. Thermal demagnetization constrained these dates using established polarity timescales. Mineralogical data indicated that the Araba Formation originated from an igneous source, while the Naqus Formation had a mixed metamorphic-igneous provenance. The integrated AMS and paleomagnetic data reveal evidence of post-depositional deformation. Specifically, the clustering of maximum AMS axes in the NW–SE direction for both formations, suggests the initial presence of a primary depositional fabric. However, prevalent tectonic activity during the Cenozoic appears to have overprinted and modified this fabric through deformation related to rifting of the Gulf of Suez region. Through this novel multi-proxy approach, we have resolved long-standing uncertainties regarding the formations' depositional ages. Our study thereby provides the first chronostratigraphic framework for these strategically important sedimentary units, significantly advancing understanding of regional Paleozoic geology. Chlorite minerals, mainly in the form of clay coats, play a critical role in determining the reservoir quality of siliciclastic rocks. They can positively influence reservoir quality by preserving porosity during deep burial, but they can also play a negative role by reducing permeability through pore filling. The main aim of this research is to determine the optimal conditions for chlorite growth in sedimentary basins. This study investigates the Lower Cretaceous turbidite sandstone of the Agat Formation in the North Sea. We used a source‐to‐sink approach to investigate the impact of sediment source composition, chemical weathering and depositional environment on chlorite formation. Understanding the interplay between these processes can help refine exploration and exploitation strategies, optimise hydrocarbon recovery, and reduce exploration risks. Representative samples from two hydrocarbon fields (the Duva and Agat fields) were investigated using petrography, geochemistry, heavy mineral identification and quantification, and U–Pb geochronology of detrital zircons. Our results show a strong heterogeneity in the sediment provenance between the two turbidite systems. In the Duva field, the sandstone is derived from a mixture of mafic and felsic sources, producing Fe‐rich sediments. Intense chemical weathering generates fine fraction materials rich in kaolinite, vermiculite, and hydroxy‐interlayered clays, which are transported into shallow marine settings. Subsequent interaction with seawater results in the formation of glauconitic materials, Fe‐illite, and phosphatic concretions. These Fe‐rich materials are remobilised into deep marine settings, providing precursors for the development of authigenic Fe‐clays such as berthierine and chlorite. Conversely, in the Agat field, the sandstone is predominantly sourced from felsic rocks that underwent low chemical weathering, producing sediment rich in quartz and feldspar with a low amount of clays. With few Fe‐rich materials transported into the basin, the development of chlorite in the Agat field was less pervasive. Basin configuration and depositional environment exerted additional control on chlorite distribution. In the confined turbidite system (e.g. Duva field), chlorite is typically found as coating, whereas in less confined turbidite systems (e.g. Agat field) chlorite shows complex distribution related to depositional environment and dewatering processes. Our findings demonstrate the importance of considering the entire sediment routing system, from source to sink, when predicting chlorite occurrence and its impact on reservoir quality in deep marine settings. A new tectonic model is presented to explain the tectono-stratigraphic evolution of the Paleoproterozoic Karrat Group in central West Greenland and the polyphase deformation, magmatism, and metamorphism of the Rinkian orogen. Sedimentation of the Karrat Group initiated after ca. 2000 Ma in an intracratonic rift basin with basal quartzites overlying Archean gneisses of the Rae craton. Rift-related alkaline volcanic rocks and synrift siliciclastic sediments were deposited in the north while an evaporite-carbonate platform developed in the south. The rift basin evolved to a back-arc basin, with associated subalkaline volcanic rocks, concomitant with the intrusion of arc-related granitoids of the Prøven igneous complex along the basal contact of the Karrat Group between 1900 Ma and 1850 Ma. The Karrat Group and magmatic arc rocks underwent metamorphism ca. 1830-1800 Ma during the collisional phase of the Rinkian orogeny. The metamorphic grade of the Karrat Group increases from greenschist facies in the south to granulite facies in the north, where it is marked by migmatization and emplacement of S-type leucogranites. Extensive east-southeastward thrust emplacement and fold vergence characterize the Rinkian orogen south of the Prøven igneous complex magmatic arc, where the arc-continent collision is established along a top-to-the-ESE shear zone postdating the Rinkian metamorphism. In summary, the Karrat Basin developed on the upper plate above eastward-dipping subduction and, together with the Rinkian orogen, represents the result of arc-continent collision that initiated the structuring of a backarc fold-and-thrust system antithetic to the subduction system. Many continental large igneous provinces coincide with climate perturbations and mass extinctions. When basaltic plumbing systems traverse carbon-rich sedimentary rocks, large volumes of greenhouse gases may be generated. We document how intrusive sills of the Mesozoic High Arctic Large Igneous Province affected surrounding finegrained, organic-rich siliciclastic rocks of the Sverdrup Basin in the Canadian Arctic Archipelago. Petrographic and X-ray diffraction data from samples located near sills show the presence of high-temperature metamorphic phases (diopside, andalusite, garnet, and cordierite). Raman thermometry on organic matter yields peak temperatures of 385-400 °C near sill contacts, tailing off to far-field temperatures of ≤230 °C. Samples located >20 m from sills show no systematic change in vitrinite reflectance and have a VRo eq% value of ~2.5%, which indicates a temperature of ~210 °C. The finite element thermal modeling tool SUTRAHEAT was applied to the 17-m-thick Hare Sill, emplaced at 3 km depth at 1105 °C. SUTRAHEAT results show that contact-proximal rocks attain temperatures of >700 °C for a brief period (~1 year). By 5 years, the Hare Sill is completely solidified (<730 °C), and the temperature anomaly collapses rapidly thereafter as the thermal pulse propagates outward. By 10 years, all rocks within 10 m of the Hare Sill are between 450 °C and 400 °C, rocks at 20 m from the contact attain 200 °C, yet far-field temperatures (>50 m) have barely changed. When multiple sills are emplaced between 4 km and 6 km depth, all rocks between sills reach ~250 °C after 100 years, showing that it is possible to raise regional-scale background temperatures by ~150 °C for the observed High Arctic Large Igneous Province sill density. Vitrinite reflectance data and pyrolysis results, together with SILLi thermal modeling, indicate that much of the hydrocarbongenerating potential was eliminated by High Arctic Large Igneous Province intrusions. The SILLi model yields ~20 tonnes/m² of organic equivalent CO2 (all carbon gas is reported as CO2) from the Hare Sill alone when emplaced into Murray Harbour Formation rocks with 5.7 wt% organic carbon, and ~226 tonnes/m² by emplacement of multiple sills throughout the 2-km-thick Blaa Mountain Group with 3 wt% organic carbon. On a basin scale, this yields a total of ~2550 Gt CO2 from the Hare Sill, with ~13,000 Gt CO2 being generated by the multiple sill scenario, similar to estimates from other large igneous provinces. Much of the Blaa Mountain Group rocks now have organic carbon contents of <1 wt%, which is consistent with large volumes of carbon-species gas having been generated, likely a mixture of CO2, CH4, and other species. However, organic-rich Murray Harbour Formation rocks show no obvious reduction in organic carbon content toward the Hare Sill intrusive contacts, which suggests that not all of the carbon was lost from the sedimentary package hosting High Arctic Large Igneous Province magmas. We suggest that some of the gas generated by contact metamorphism failed to drain out for lack of high-permeability conduits, and then back-reacted to form calcite cements and pyrobitumen during cooling. Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) is a key element to achieving net‐zero energy challenge timely. CCS operations require the integration of geophysical data, such as seismic and electromagnetic surveys, numerical reservoir models and fluid flow simulations. However, the 10–100s m resolution of seismic imaging methods complicates the mapping of smaller scale rock heterogeneities, while borehole measurements commonly show large fluctuations at sub‐cm scales. In this study, we combine laboratory data, well‐logging, rock physics theories and a proof‐of‐concept time‐lapse seismic modeling to assess the effect of pore‐scale fluid distribution and petrophysical heterogeneities on the expected performance of whole‐reservoir CCS operations in deep saline aquifers, by analogy to the Aurora CCS site, North Sea. We monitored the elastic and electrical properties of three sandstone samples with slightly different physical and petrographic properties during carbon dioxide (CO2) flow‐through tests under equivalent in situ effective pressure. We inferred the CO2‐induced damage in the rocks from the variations of their hydromechanical properties. We found that the clay fraction, CO2‐clay chemical interactions, and porosity were the main factors affecting both the CO2 distribution in the samples and the hydromechanical response. We used seismic modeling of well‐log data and the laboratory results to estimate the reservoir‐scale time‐lapse seismic response to CO2 injection and to assess the effect of the rock heterogeneities in our interpretation. The results show that disregarding the effect of rock heterogeneities on the CO2‐brine fluids distribution can lead to significant misinterpretations of seismic monitoring surveys during CCS operations in terms of both CO2 quantification and distribution. The most realistic long‐term and large‐scale mitigation technology is Carbon Capture (Utilization) and Storage (CC(U)S). The CO2 is captured from the main sources of emissions and injected into deep geological formation for its permanent disposal. Offshore saline aquifers formed by siliciclastic reservoir rocks (sandstones) appear as suitable emplacements due to large storage capacity, pore connectivity and low CO2‐fluid‐rock chemical reactivity. The main challenge for CCS is to ensure CO2 remains contained in the subsurface storage volume. Seismic and electromagnetic sources are the most widely used geophysical remote sensing tools in reservoir exploration, and in the last couple of decades also for CO2 plume monitoring. However, reservoir rocks are not homogeneous bodies, and heterogeneities can largely affect our geophysical interpretation of CCS reservoirs. In this contribution we assess how the geophysical responses of rock samples associated with their hydromechanical changes during CO2 injection might vary as a result of small differences in porosity, shale fraction and clay content between them. The Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau and its surrounding areas have a long and complex tectonic evolutionary history. Cratons and blocks, such as northern India, Lhasa, Qiangtang, Qaidam and Central Qilian, and their in-between orogenic belts constitute the main part of the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau. During the Cambrian Period, most of these cratons and blocks were on the northwestern periphery of Gondwana, and were associated with the surrounding blocks, e.g. Arabian, Central Iran, Afghanistan, Tarim, Alxa, North China, South China and Sibumasu through the Proto-Tethys Ocean. The Cambrian stratigraphic sequences on these stable blocks are composed of mixed siliciclastic and carbonate rocks deposited in the shallow-water marine environments, and contain the trilobite assemblages of shelf facies. The Cambrian stratigraphic sequences in the Qilian tectonic belts, however, are characterized by the intermediate-basic igneous rocks and silicates formed in the Proto-Tethys Ocean, and contain the trilobite assemblages of deep-water slope facies. Combining with previous data, field observations and newly discovered fossils through funding by the Second Tibetan Plateau Scientific Expedition and Research, the general characteristics of the Cambrian strata in different tectonic units of the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau and its surrounding areas have been summarized in this paper. Furthermore, efforts have been made to subdivide and correlate the Cambrian strata across these areas by utilizing available biostratigraphic and geochronological data. As a result, a comprehensive litho- and biostratigraphy chart has been compiled. Finally, from the biogeographic perspective, this paper also provides a brief overview of the Cambrian paleogeographical reconstruction of the major tectonic blocks, and discusses the problems associated with the evolution of the Proto-Tethys tectonic belt. Rocks of the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau (QTP) host abundant Triassic fossils. So far, the well established marine fossil sequences based on ammonoids, conodonts, bivalves, brachiopods, radiolarians, and terrestrial spora-pollen sequence have become standard for biostratigraphic correlation of the QTP. For much of Triassic time, the QTP occupied a marine setting as suggested by the dominance of marine deposits. The main sedimentary types represented in the Triassic successions include littoral to shallow marine clastic rocks, shallow marine carbonate platform carbonates, bathyal to abyssal slope carbonates intercalated with clastic and siliceous deposits, coal-bearing clastic strata contained within paralic facies deposits, and littoral and terrestrial volcaniclastic rocks. These deposits are organized into four stages in ascending order: (1) Early Triassic deposits that record marine transgression, including extensive shallow marine carbonate platform strata. (2) Middle Triassic Ladinian to Late Triassic Carnian deposits, including thin-bedded limestone, fine clastics, and siliceous rocks, that accumulated at greater depths than underlying Early Triassic strata and reflect the peak of the transgression. Magmatic activity appears to have occurred in some areas during this stage. (3) Late Triassic Norian deposits that record the onset of marine regression as suggested by the widespread occurrence of platform carbonates. It is noteworthy that stage 3 deposits of the Qin-Qi-Kun area in the northernmost region of the QPT is dominated by terrestrial strata and displays evidence of local erosion. (4) Late Triassic Rhaetian littoral and shallow marine clastic and coal-bearing deposits that preserve the record of continued marine regression continued. The Indus-Yarlungzangbo Suture Zone (IYSZ) appears to have been the rifting axis during Triassic time as suggested by sedimentary facies trends that reflect deepening to south and north. Thus, the Himalaya Block to the south of the IYSZ was part of the passive margin of Gondwana whereas the north side of the IYSZ, including the Gangdis (or Lhasa) and South Qiangtang blocks, belonged to the passive margin of Eurasia. The similarity of rocks of the Bangongco-Nujiang Suture Zone (BNSZ) to the north of the IYSZ with those of the Gangdis Block to the south and the South Qiangtang Block to the north does not support the contention that the BNSZ was a rift axis during Triassic time. Results of palaeobiological research also suggest that the IYSZ rather than BNSZ was a biogeographic boundary during the Triassic. Early and Middle Triassic break-up of Pangea was accompanied on the QTP by rifting along the IYSZ. The expression of crustal shortening induced by the Indosinian Orogeny on the QTP is largely a change of sedimentary facies induced by Late Triassic uplift. Deposits of the Gangdis to South Qiangtang regions of the QTP record a transition from shallow marine carbonate platform deposits to littoral and paralic coal-bearing strata. Moreover, the stratigraphic succession of the Qin-Qi-Kun area preserves a transition from littoral clastic deposits to terrestrial facies and local erosion. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Detrital composition of sandstone is the most important data for siliciclastic studies including sandstone classification, provenance analysis, oil and gas exploration. A large amount of detrital composition data has accumulated over the past decades, however, they are scattered in publications without unified standards. Here we constructed a global dataset of detrital components of sandstones from 646 peer‐reviewed publications using Gazzi‐Dickinson method. A total of 19,861 samples from Precambrian to Quaternary are involved in this dataset. For each sample, we present details on reference information, geographic information, geological background, depositional age and the original data. It is a high‐quality dataset for the information on each sandstone sample from different studies which was standardized. The dataset can be used widely, such as for stratigraphic comparison, provenance analysis, exploring the general laws of the source‐to‐sink process and geological engineering. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Nkout banded iron formations (BIFs)-hosted iron deposit is located in the Ntem Complex at the northwestern part of the Congo craton, southern Cameroon. We report geochronological and geochemical data of magnetite BIFs and interlayered mica schists from the Nkout iron ore deposit. The BIFs show typical features of chemical precipitates characterized by seawater-like shale-normalized rare earth elements plus yttrium spectra. Weak positive Eu anomalies indicate the contribution of high-temperature hydrothermal fluids to the BIFs, with low detrital input. The absence of true Ce anomalies indicates that the BIFs were likely to be deposited in anoxic seawater. LA-ICP-MS U-Pb detrital zircon data for the BIFs and associated metasiliciclasltic rocks constrained the maximum depositional age at ca. 2.8 Ga, suggesting that the Nkout BIFs are likely the oldest iron formations in the Ntem Complex. Our zircon U-Pb isotope data indicate that the Nkout succession experienced lower-amphibolite facies metamorphism at ca. 2.0 Ga, which correlates with the regional tectono-thermal event linked to the convergence and assembly of terranes between the Congo and São Francisco cratons during the Eburnean-Transamazonian orogeny. The Qom Formation is the most important hydrocarbon reservoir target in Central Iran. The Qom platform developed in a back‐arc basin during the Oligo–Miocene due to the closing of the Tethyan Seaway. This formation consists of a variety of carbonate and non‐carbonate facies deposited on a platform ranging from supratidal to basin. A combination of tectonic and eustatic events led to some lateral and vertical facies variations in the study area. Six third‐order depositional sequences and related surfaces were identified regarding vertical facies changes in the studied sections of this Oligo–Miocene succession. According to all results and data, this succession was initially deposited during the Chattian upon a distally steepened ramp of siliciclastic‐carbonate composition, including the Bouma sequence. Then, from the late Chattian to the Aquitanian, the platform changed into a homoclinal carbonate ramp with a gentle profile. With respect to tectonic activity, this phase was a calm period during the deposition of the Qom Formation. Finally, a drowned carbonate platform and a rimmed shelf emerged during the Burdigalian, terminated by the continental deposits of the Upper Red Formation. Thin, condensed coarse-grained shallow marine successions can be difficult to describe and interpret, especially in the subsurface since the recognition of finer-grained intervals, typically associated with sequence stratigraphic surfaces, is challenging. This lack of mudstones and siltstones means that they also typically make excellent reservoir intervals. The Oxfordian to Volgian intra-Draupne Formation sandstones in the Johan Sverdrup Field, southern Utsira High, represent such a system. This study presents a new sequence stratigraphic model for the Johan Sverdrup Field that unravels the detailed depositional history of the succession and places its formation within a regional Late Jurassic tectonostratigraphic framework. The intra-Draupne Formation sandstones comprise four parasequences deposited following a regional Kimmeridgian marine flooding event. Sediments were mainly supplied through West-derived fan deltas from the Haugaland High and NW-SE-directed tidal currents reworking the Augvald Graben and the Avaldsnes High at the East. The oldest parasequence shows a distinctive suite of facies consisting of fine-grained and mud-rich bioturbated sandstones deposited in a semi-restricted lagoon. Subsequent parasequences lack fine-grained sediments and are dominated by bidirectional cross-stratified, very coarse-to coarse-grained sandstones and gravels deposited in a tidal strait. A progressive reduction of fault-related subsidence in the Middle Volgian along with Late Volgian-Ryazanian sea-level rise and inversion of pre-existing structures promoted backstepping of the feeder systems, sediment starvation and the progressive deposition of the black and green-red shales of the Draupne and Asgard formations. The results of this study account for features previously unidentified in the Johan Sverdrup Field and which have implications for understanding the deposition of coarse-grained shallow marine successions around the Utsira High and other transgressed basement highs. Source-to-sink sedimentary systems associated with volcanic rifted margins serve as important archives for basin development by recording lithospheric changes affecting the depositional systems. Distinguishing between sediment transport processes and their sediment source(s) can guide the interpretation of a basin's history, and thereby inform regional paleogeographic reconstructions. In this contribution, we integrate and utilize wireline geophysical logs, detailed petrographic observations from side-wall cores, and seismic analysis to describe and decipher a Maastrichtian to Danian-aged basin-floor depositional system in the deep outer Møre Basin, mid-Norwegian margin. Well 6302/6-1 (Tulipan) is a spatially isolated borehole drilled in 2001 that penetrates Maastrichtian and younger strata. A succession of hitherto undescribed carbonates and sandstones in the outer Møre Basin was discovered. It is investigated for sediment transport, provenance, and depositional processes on the basin floor surrounded by structural highs and ridges. The strata from the lower parts form a basin-floor apron consisting of redeposited carbonate sourced from a westerly sub-aerial high. The apron transitions vertically from mixed siliciclastic and carbonate into a purely siliciclastic fan with intercalated sandstone and mudstone, providing a rare high-resolution record of how depositional environments experience a complete shift in dominant processes. The development coincides with similar latest Cretaceous-earliest Palaeocene sequences recorded south of this region (e.g., well 219/20-1) and may have been influenced by regional uplift associated with the onset of magmatism in the Northeast Atlantic. This study improves our understanding of a late, pre-breakup source-to-sink sedimentary system developed near the breakup axis of an infant ocean, and documents what is possibly the northernmost chalk deposit in the Chalk Group. Detrital zircon from three coarse-grained marine siliciclastic rocks was analyzed for U–Pb, Lu–Hf, and trace element compositions to constrain the timing of deposition and sediment provenance of the Cunningham Lake formation (formerly siliciclastic unit of the Sitlika assemblage) in north-central British Columbia. This strategy tests previously proposed sedimentary linkages between the Cache Creek terrane and the westerly rocks of the Stikine terrane. All three samples indicate maximum depositional ages at ca. 205–202 Ma (Rhaetian). The samples contain a predominant ca. 225–215 Ma detrital population, sourced from proximal contemporaneous volcanic arcs, and minor Permian to Middle Triassic and Carboniferous arc-derived detrital populations. The absence of Precambrian grains is consistent with the strongly suprachondritic zircon compositions (εHf(t) = +7 to +20), and indicates exclusively juvenile sources for the Cunningham Lake formation. Late Triassic sources of zircon are not known in the Cache Creek terrane and, except within western Stikine terrane, are uncommon among the Intermontane terranes that amalgamated with the Cache Creek terrane during Late Triassic–Early Jurassic. The Stikine suite (ca. 230–214 Ma) and coeval volcanic rocks in western Stikinia are the most probable sources of Late Triassic detritus for the Cunningham Lake formation. Stikinia's Paleozoic basement is the probable source of Carboniferous detrital zircon. Volcanic arc–backarc complexes in the Cache Creek terrane are the most likely sources of Permian to Middle Triassic detritus in the Intermontane terranes. Accordingly, the siliciclastic rocks of the Cunningham Lake formation represent an overlap sedimentary succession that links Stikinia to the Cache Creek terrane by the latest Triassic. The widely debated late Oligocene-middle Miocene Numidian Fm (NF) consists of supermature quartzose sediments deposited in the Maghrebian Flysch Basin (MFB) outcropping from the Betic Cordillera to the Southern Apennine passing by the Maghrebian Chain. The NF is commonly composed of three lithostratigraphic members and is characterized by two vertical successions (Type A and Type B) corresponding to different sedimentation areas in the MFB. It is noteworthy the occurrence of widespread lateral successions of the NF (Types C, D and E) indicating in some cases an interference of the Numidian sedimentation with other different depositional systems and supplies. The Type C 'Mixed Successions', deposited in depocentre areas, are composed of supermature Numidian supply interfingering with immature siliciclastic materials, coming from the internal portion of the MFB. The Type D consists of supermature Numidian materials supplied from the Africa Margin (external sub-domains) deposited in sub-basins on the Africa-Adria margins, outside the typical Numidian depositional area. The Type E, which stratigraphically overlies both the South Iberian Margin (SIM) and the Mesomediterranean Microplate (MM), represents the migration of the Numidian depositional system to reach the opposite margins of the MFB. The occurrence at a regional scale of all the above-mentioned lateral successions reveals a great evolutionary complexity resulting also from further constraints, which must be considered for palaeogeographic and palaeotectonic reconstructions. Another important point deals with the diachronism of the top of the NF, observed eastward from the Betic-Rifian Arc and the Algerian-Tunisian Tell (Burdigalian p.p.) to Sicily (Langhian p.p.) and up to the Southern Apennine (at least Langhian/Serravallian boundary) which can be related with eastwards delay in the MFB closure. A robust stratigraphic framework and a coherent depositional ramp model for the Zitai, Dawan, Meitan and Ningkuo formations of Floian–Darriwilian age (Early–Middle Ordovician) in the Yangtze (Daoba, Xiangshuidong, Daling, Gudongkou and Honghuayuan sections) and Jiangnan regions (Nanba section) was created based on lithofacies and major element analysis. Three siliciclastic (LF1–3) and six carbonate (LF4–9) lithofacies are recognized representing sediments that were deposited in mixed siliciclastic and carbonate ramp environment. The intensity of mixed sedimentation and terrigenous input were evaluated using the elemental proxies Intensity of Mixed sedimentation (IM) and Aluminum Accumulation Rate (AlAR), as well as their mean values during certain time intervals. Mixed sediments are most well‐developed along the marginal Yangtze region, strongly impacted by recurrent influx of westerly derived terrigenous materials in response to global eustatic changes and regional tectonic movements, shaping the gently southeast‐dipping morphology. Regular terrigenous influx resulted in periods of enhanced primary productivity on the Yangtze Ramp as evidenced by matching biodiversity peaks in planktonic organisms, i.e., chitinozoans and acritarchs. Brachiopods and other shelly fauna were also able to proliferate as new niches developed along the gently dipping ramp floor with substrate changes. The biodiversification patterns suggest that terrigenous influx controlled in part by regional tectonics played a more important role than previously thought in the development of Great Ordovician Biodiversification Event in South China. Parabadiella is considered the earliest trilobite representative in South China and was originally recovered from the mid-upper part of the Guojiaba Formation, in Liangshan section. Previous studies suggested that the earliest brachiopod co-occurred with the oldest trilobite, and the Parabadiella–Eoobolus association from the Xihaoping Member (Cambrian Series 2, Stage 3), in southern Shaanxi was considered the first trilobite–brachiopod assemblage zone in South China. Therein, brachiopods occur together with trilobites recovered in Well JS103 seemingly extending the First Appearance Datum deeply in the lower Cambrian at the central Yangtze Platform. Well JS103 is a shale gas exploration well that targets the lower Cambrian Jiulaodong Formation in southern Sichuan Basin. The uppermost fossiliferous layers are siliciclastic rocks nearly 10 metres thick. Here, two distinct trilobite zones are found, including the lower Parabadiella Zone and the upper Wutingaspis–Eoredlichia Zone. Additionally, the lowermost part of the Guojiaba Formation is poorly fossiliferous, and ranges from 200 to 250 metres in thickness. Thus, the discovery of the brachiopod–trilobite assemblage provides new insights into the biostratigraphy in Sichuan and is of great potentials for biostratigraphic correlation of the siliciclastic rocks in the western margin of the Yangtze Platform. Canyons in carbonate depositional settings, as important elements of the source-to-sink system, remain poorly studied compared to those in siliciclastic depositional environments. The latest high-resolution three-dimensional seismic data, well logs, and core data at the eastern edge of the Precaspian Basin are used to investigate the geomorphology, infillings, and depositional process of a unique carbonate-filled canyon in the Carboniferous KT-II formation parallel to the carbonate platform, which is distinct from other slope-perpendicular canyons. The canyon has a total length of more than 52.3 km with a nearly N-S orientation and an S-shaped geometry, and the whole canyon can be divided into three segments by two knickpoints. The slope-parallel orientation of the canyon is mainly controlled by the palaeogeomorphology and reverse faults. Due to the collision of the Kazakh and European plates in the early-middle Visean (early Carboniferous), the canyon was formed in a northern tilted, elongated, and restricted palaeotopographic feature between uplifts. The development of reverse faults related to tectonic movement controlled the variations in the width of the canyon and the positions of the knickpoints. Tectonics controlled the orientation and formation of the canyon, while sedimentary processes contributed to its infilling. The well-seismic tie analysis indicated two distinct periods of the canyon fillings, Ss1 and Ss2, which were separated by a second-order sequence boundary. The lower part contained sediments supplied by both sides of the canyon through channels or gullies, and the upper part was dominated by a carbonate platform that prograded from the eastern side of the canyon. The evolution of the canyon can be subdivided into three stages. The increasing stage was mainly characterized by significant upslope erosion through headward retrogressive mass failures in the slope-parallel confined negative relief to form the canyon during the lowstand system tract of Ss1. Subsequently, in the early filling stage, the carbonate factory was productive during the highstand, and massive excess carbonate sediments were transported into the adjacent canyon by channels or gullies on both sides and deposited. The canyon was basically filled, and the morphology became much gentler. During the subsequent late filling stage, the carbonate platform was flooded again during the highstand, and the production rates of the carbonate factory greatly increased. During the Early-Middle Ordovician, the Upper Yangtze Platform experienced extensive development of a distinctive set of mixed siliciclastic-carbonate deposits known as the Meitan Formation. To conduct a comprehensive study of the relationship between mixed sedimentation and sea-level changes, the Hailong section, situated at the southwest margin of the Upper Yangtze Platform in SW China, was selected as the study area due to its typical mixed sedimentary sequence. This section was effectively compared with sections in other regions. Clustering analysis of the point-count groups from the Honghuayuan and Meitan Formations revealed nine microfacies that developed during this period. Such a diverse range of microfacies provides the evidence of frequent sea-level changes in the Yangtze Platform throughout this period. Specifically, two sea-level rises were identified during the early TS.2b and early TS.3b, with the early TS.2b event occurring globally. Furthermore, four sea-level falls were observed in the late TS.2b, TS.2c, TS.3a, and late TS.3b periods. The late TS.2b sea-level fall was globally significant. From TS.2c onwards, distinct variations in sea-level changes among the Yangtze Platform, North China, Baltoscandia, Australia, and North America emerged due to alterations in the paleogeographic pattern. By comparing the sea-level curves in the Upper Yangtze Platform with the diversity curves of chitinozoans, acritarchs, and brachiopods, it became evident that environmental changes played a crucial role in the Great Ordovician Biodiversification Event (GOBE), especially during the Floian. The rising sea level and increased detrital materials fostered the development of diverse habitats, prompting organisms to adapt to varying environments. In general, rising sea levels favored increased brachiopod diversity, while falling sea levels favored enhanced planktonic diversity among chitinous and acritarch species. By shedding new light on the relationship between Ordovician sea-level changes and biodiversification in the Yangtze region, this study offers a fresh perspective on the subject from the microfacies analysis. During the Early Cretaceous, several extensive carbonate shelves were developed in the sedimentary basins located on the Central Segment of the South Atlantic Ocean. These marine successions are characterized by mixed carbonate and siliciclastic sediments with a diverse fossil content, deposited during the late Aptian–Albian interval. The microbiofacies content of two continuous cores (SER-01 and SER-03), each approximately 200 m deep, drilled in the onshore region of the Sergipe–Alagoas Basin, north-eastern Brazil consists of mudstones, wackestones, packstones, grainstones, rudstones, marls, claystone, shales and sandstones in Core SER-01, whereas those from Core SER-03 are essentially fine-grained lithologies such as mudstones, wackestones, claystone and shales. Two low-frequency sedimentation cycles are identified, with SER-01 being characterized by restricted and shallow-marine facies that grade up in a transgressive trend, which is also present throughout Core SER-03. Six microfacies are recognized, indicating deposition in a high-energy shallow-marine environment with a sand-bar system, which later evolved into a low-energy deeper-marine environment (outer shelf). The microfossil content includes planktic and benthic foraminifera, which are dominant in both cores, as well as macrofossils such as echinoderms and molluscs. Cadosinids, green algae, microcrinoids and inoceramids occur locally in both cores. In addition, Core SER-01 is characterized by abundant microbial units. The fossil content shows palaeogeographic affinities with the Tethyan Realm. Typical ophiolitic rock assemblages such as siliciclastic rocks, basalts and gabbros, together with the subduction-related intermediate-acidic intrusive rocks, are newly discovered in the Tongjiang-Fuyuan area of the Heilongjiang Provence, NE China. To determine the formation age and genesis of the mafic rocks (basalts and gabbros) and intermediate-acidic intrusive rocks (granodiorites) in the area, as well as their geodynamic settings, the whole-rock geochemical analysis and zircon LA-ICP-MS U-Pb dating were carried out. Zircon U-Pb results suggest that the granodiorites are 93–95 Ma and gabbro is 95 Ma, respectively. Geochemical results show that the gabbros and basalts exhibit characteristics of ocean island basalt (OIB) affinity and are typically related to having originated from mantle plumes. While the granodiorites show the nature of the island-arc magmatic rocks and may originate from the lower crust. Based on the coeval igneous rock associations and regional tectonic evolution, we conclude that the late Cretaceous magmatic rocks in the Tongjiang-Fuyuan area are the product of continuous subduction of the Palaeo-Pacific plate and reflect the subduction rollback process of the Palaeo-Pacific plate. The data on petrography and geochemical behaviour of Neoproterozoic siliciclastic sandstones of Kanpa-Tempa area from Chandrapur District are presented here to determine the provenance, source rock weathering and tectonic setting. The major elemental composition reveals that the Neoproterozoic sandstones are mainly as litharenite. The interrelationship of Zr vs. TiO2, Y/Ni vs. Cr/V, TiO2 vs. Al2O3, high LREE/HREE ratios (8.97 to 12.46) and negative Eu anomalies (Eu/Eu*= 0.52 to 0.79) suggest that the sandstones were mainly derived from the parent felsic igneous rocks. The higher values of paleo-weathering indices such as Plagioclase Index of Alteration (PIA), grading from 66.42 to 80.82 and Chemical Index of Weathering (CIW), ranging from 70.58 to 82.39 clearly point out that the sediments and their source rocks experienced moderate to intense weathering. The Chemical Index of Alteration (CIA) values (ranging from 62.79 to 76.16) coupled with average content of K2O (1.66) is indicative of K-addition during diagenetic processes. Similarly lower values of K2O/Na2O ratio (0.52) suggest limited chemical maturity and SiO2-K2O/Na2O discrimination plot exhibits the active continental marginal tectonic settings. The study examines bioclastic carbonate contourites that arise from the broad spectrum of bottom‐current related sedimentary processes ranging from deposition to erosion. The result of the intermittent accumulation of sediment are thin and condensed successions with abundant hiatuses. Such bottom‐current deposits are poorly known, since the broadly accepted contourite‐facies model, the bi‐gradational sequence, characterizes environments of contourite depositional systems as a continuous accretion of fine‐grained siliciclastic sediments. To increase current understanding of the carbonate facies within hiatal contourite records, the Eifelian–Frasnian of the Tafilalt Platform in Morocco was investigated. The succession is divided into five facies associations that are interpreted to reflect pelagic sedimentation and deposition from bottom currents on a contourite terrace, a gently inclined section of the upper slope of Gondwana shaped by a water‐mass interface. Contourite deposition was mainly controlled by oxic clear‐water currents (documented by moderately to completely bioturbated limestones with abundant hydrogenetic ferromanganese nodules, and low organic‐carbon contents), at times also by an anoxic water mass (featured by organic‐rich coquinas with absent to sparse bioturbation and predominantly syngenetic framboidal pyrites). Biostratigraphic data and the overall depositional architecture display palaeoceanographic hydrodynamic processes associated with a shifting water‐mass interface. The inner terrace was characterized by an alongslope contourite channel and a small mounded drift at its downslope margin. Energetic bottom currents furthermore caused abraded surfaces, i.e. plain areas of non‐deposition and localized erosion, and sandy condensation layers. The microfacies reflects repeated alternation between suspension deposition, winnowing of fines, bedload traction, dynamic sediment bypassing and reworking, together with concomitant seafloor cementation. Coquinas of mainly planktonic and nektonic organisms are identified as integral parts of bi‐gradational contourite sequences showing inverse and normal grading. Hiatal lag concentrations of carbonate intraclasts, ferromanganese nodules and conodonts often drape hardgrounds and erosional surfaces at the midpoint of these frequently incomplete sequences. This Devonian case provides the opportunity to investigate the spatial and temporal variability of the bed‐scale contourite sequence, also with regard to the drift‐scale depositional architecture. First large-scale concentration of gold to ore grade in Earth's crust took place at around 2.9 Ga in quartz-pebble conglomerates, well before endogenous deposits, such as porphyry and epithermal systems or orogenic-type deposits, started to play a significant role from ca. 2.75 Ga onwards. The conglomerate-hosted gold placers, typified by those in the Mesoarchaeaen Witwatersrand Basin in South Africa, are thought to have been sourced from the leaching of background levels of gold in the Archaean continental crust, promoted by deep chemical weathering under a reducing acidic atmosphere. Gold dissolved in meteoric waters was trapped by possibly acidophile microbes, fossil remnants of which are preserved as kerogen layers in the 2.9 Ga lower Central Rand Group of the Witwatersrand Supergroup. Mechanical reworking of the delicate microbial mat-bound gold led to rich gold placers from 2.9 Ga onwards. Well-endowed gold placers older than 2.9 Ga are conspicuously missing, although suitable siliciclastic host rocks, even containing relics of former microbes, are known from continental sediment sequences as old as 3.22 Ga. A review of climate-sensitive rock types and geochemical data on the extent of chemical weathering reveals that the period from 2.96–2.91 Ga was cold, with repeated glaciations as evidenced by glaciogenic diamicite, whereas warmer and (or) wetter climates reigned from 2.90 to 2.78 Ga. In concert with the temporal distribution of placer gold accumulation, the conclusion is reached that chemical weathering rate, dictated by climate, was a key determining factor in the exogenous binding of Au into sedimentary deposits. Sediment routing systems of cratonic domains have not been studied extensively because their relief and erosion rates are very low, although their vast dimensions allowed them to contribute to a significant proportion of the sediments exported to the global ocean. To gain further insights into the behavior of cratonic sediment routing systems at geological time scales, we investigated the Guiana Shield and its Atlantic rifted margin (i.e., the Guiana-Suriname and Foz do Amazonas Basins, northern South America) over the Meso-Cenozoic with an emphasis on paleoenvironment and accumulation histories of the offshore sediments. We show that the basins of the Guiana Shield rifted margin record (1) periods of very low siliciclastic supply concomitant with the development of carbonate platforms, alternating with (2) phases of higher siliciclastic supply associated with sand-dominated clastic deposits and turbidites. Low siliciclastic supplies reflect either very limited rift-related relief growth and erosion such as during the Central Atlantic rifting in the Late Jurassic or intense lateritic weathering of the cratonic source area during Paleogene-Miocene climate optima. Higher siliciclastic supplies correspond either to (1) periods of rapid rift-related relief growth and erosion such as during the Equatorial Atlantic rifting (Early Cretaceous), (2) periods of drainage reorganization over a steadily eroding cratonic domain (Late Cretaceous), or (3) periods of tapping of sediments stored in the Andean retro-foreland basins via the present-day Orinoco and Amazon Rivers (Plio-Pleistocene). The Portofino Conglomerate (PC) cropping out in the Eastern Liguria is an approximately 500 m thick, very gently folded succession mainly composed of poorly bedded and mostly matrix-supported conglomerates. It stratigraphically rests on the Helminthoid Flysch (UA3) thrusted onto the Antola Unit. We vertically distinguished three mostly ruditic litho/petrofacies: (i) Paraggi (fP) with carbonate clasts from an Helminthoid Flysch succession; (ii) Monte Pallone (fMP) with prevailing carbonate and meta-carbonate clasts and minor quartz-rich (meta)siliciclastic and high-pressure–low-pressure (HP-LP) metabasite clasts; and (iii) Monte Bocche (fMB) with dominant quartz-rich (meta)siliciclastic, meta-carbonate clasts, and minor granitoid elements and medium-temperature–high-temperature (MT-HT) regional metamorphic rocks. The middle-upper Eocen age of Paraggi litho/petrofacies is constrained by well-preserved microforaminifers (e.g., Globigerinatheka) recovered in the matrix. During its sedimentation, the directions of the paleocurrents would indicate that the PC underwent a counterclockwise rotation coeval with the first Cenozoic rotational phase of the Sardinia–Corsica system (50–30 Ma) and then stopped before the sedimentation of the Monte Pallone and Monte Bocche litho/petrofacies. The vertical compositional variation in the sedimentary inputs suggested that the PC is the result of a progressive deepening of the erosional level of a tectonic pile that can be located in the Ligurian Alps Chain. We considered the PC as the likely apical part of a submarine fan deposited in a piggy-back/thrust-top basin within the Alpine nappe stack. This sedimentary body was later tectonically transported eastward with its UA3 Helminthoid Flysch substrate (similarly to Epiligurian Units of the Northern Apennines) onto the Apenninic orogenic system (i.e., the Antola Unit). On September 5, 2022, an Ms6.8 earthquake struck Luding County, Sichuan Province, China. Through creating a coseismic landslide prediction model, we obtained the spatial distribution of the triggered geological hazards immediately after the earthquake. Through collecting all available multi-source optical remote sensing images of the earthquake-affected area via UAV and satellite platforms, the exact information of coseismic landslide was achieved by pattern recognition and visual inspection. According to the current results, the Luding earthquake triggered 5336 landslides with a total area of 28.53km2. The spatial distribution of the coseismic landslides is correlated statistically to various seismic, terrain, and geological factors, to evaluate their susceptibility at regional scale and to identify the most typical characteristics of these failures. The results reveal that the coseismic landslides mainly occurred on the sides of the Xianshuihe fault (within 1.2 km) and Dadu River (within 0.5 km) in striped patterns. They are concentrated in the regions with an elevation range of 1000–1800 m, a slope range of 25–55°, and lithologies of acid plutonic rocks, mixed sedimentary rocks, and siliciclastic sedimentary rocks. Besides, the coseismic landslides of the Luding earthquake are smaller in size and shallower than those triggered by the 2008 Wenchuan earthquake and the 2017 Jiuzhaigou earthquake. Rapidly achieving the spatial locations and distribution patterns of the coseismic landslides enables to provide effective support and guidance to emergency rescue, risk mitigation, and reconstruction planning. Petrographic, whole‐rock geochemical and geochronological analysis of polymictic conglomerate, associated siltstone and greywacke in the Neoarchean Gadag Greenstone Belt in the Western Dharwar Craton, India, provides new insights into sedimentary provenance and tectonic setting. The polymictic conglomerate contains granitic, gneissic, felsic and mafic volcanic, quartzite and banded ferruginous chert clasts within a quartzo‐feldspathic matrix. Framework grains in the siltstone and greywacke are quartz, feldspar with rock fragments, embedded in a chlorite‐dominant matrix. The chemical index of alteration values (~70) and A‐CN‐K plot for the rocks suggest a low‐to‐moderate degree of weathering. Rare earth element (REE) patterns show moderate fractionation (LaN/YbN ~ 12.31) with a weak negative europium anomaly (0.82). Enrichment in transition elements (Ni, Cr, Co, Sc) and depletion in high‐field‐strength elements, as well as relatively low La/Co (0.62), moderate to high Th/Yb (3.06), La/Th (5.16), La/Yb (17.5), and La/Sc (~2.37) ratios, suggest a mixed felsic‐mafic provenance. U–Pb dating of detrital zircon from the conglomerate and greywacke revealed major age peaks at ca. (3.2, 2.9, 2.8, 2.6, 2.5 Ga) and a maximum age of deposition of 2,508 ± 26 Ma, 2,493 ± 20 Ma, respectively. The above data suggest low to moderately weathered proximal sources for both conglomerate and greywacke, indicating that these two rock types were not deposited simultaneously, but rather separately. The association of these conglomerates and greywacke with continental arc‐related volcanics indicates the closing of an arc at the time of sedimentation. Complex provenance consisting of recycled and magmatic arc during basin closure confirm the notion of modern style plate tectonics operating during Neoarchaean. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The present study aims to investigate petrography characteristics and sedimental environments of upper Olenekian-middle Anisian deposits of Nakhlak group in the sedimentary-structural zone of central Iran. To this end, a section of these deposits with a thickness of 720 meters was first selected, and 190 samples were taken from this section for preparing thin sections. Also, quantitative and qualitative laboratory tests were performed and 25 samples of sandstone were selected for point counter analysis. The results indicated that the major deposits of this formation are related to siliciclastic, carbonate, and pyroclastic types, which are in the form of two facies associations. The facies association A at the bottom of the studied section with the thickness of 90 meters has a periodicity of clastic, carbonate, and pyroclastic facies. The clastic facies of this association consists of fine-grained sandstone. In addition, the carbonate facies in association A are characterized by two microfacies consisting of intraclast oolitic grainstone and oolitic grainstone. Further, tuffite is the only pyroclastic facies related to association A, which has a laminate structure, cross-bedding lamination, herringbone bedding, and upward-thinning and thickening cycles. The facies association, B which is deposited later, is more in the middle and top part of the section. The facies association B is 660 meters thick and has a periodicity of clastic and limestone facies. Clastic facies of this association includes four lithofacies such as conglomerate, pebble coarsegrained sandstone, medium-grained sandstone to thin layer siltstone and shale. The carbonate facies consists of four microfacies such as sandy intraclastic wackestone and mudstone. Furthermore, slumping structures, cross bedding, turbulence, boudinage structure, and convolute of sediments, along with the effects of erosional channels are observed in facies B. Field and laboratory studies conducted on this succession indicate the structure of facies association A was deposited in a mixed siliciclastic carbonate ramp. The Western Balkan lithium-boron metallogenic zone can be traced for 1500 km, extending subparallel to the Sava-Vardar and Western Vardar zones toward its Turkish counterpart, the Izmir-Ankara-Erzincan zone. Common features are: (1) lithium-boron mineralization is hosted in Lower-Middle Miocene extensional lacustrine basins; (2) lacustrine series consisting of fine-grained siliciclastic sediments and scarce evaporites with intercalations of volcaniclastics, tuff, or travertine indicating syndepositional volcanic activity; (3) lacustrine basins that are usually normal-fault-controlled extensional grabens, with the fault system probably acting as a major fluid pathway; (4) northernmost sodium borate/borosilicate deposits (Jadar, Valjevo, Rekovac; with jadarite, borax, probertite, searlesite) gradually transition to calcium borate deposits southward (Jarandol-Piskanja, Pobrđe; with colemanite ± ulexite); (5) Oligocene/Miocene granitic rocks from the westernmost part of the zone host pegmatite and greisen occurrences with surface lithium anomalies of 0.02–0.08 wt% Li2O extending for several km2; (6) igneous Li enrichment by fractionation processes is indicated for some younger (?Early/mid-Miocene) peraluminous granite plutons; (7) the formation of the lacustrine basins and associated Li-B mineralization was contemporaneous with the emplacement of the younger phase of Li-bearing granitic intrusions and exhumation of metamorphic core complexes which provided the large-scale heat flow for hydrothermal systems and syngenetic Li-B mineralization. Understanding how sedimentary rocks represent time is one of the significant challenges in sedimentology. Sedimentation rates retrieved from vertical sections are strongly timescale dependent, which means that we cannot use empirical rate data derived from vertical sections in modern environments to interpret the temporal structure of ancient sedimentary deposits. We use the Lower to Middle Campanian Blackhawk Formation deposits in eastern Utah and western Colorado as a natural laboratory to test a source‐to‐sink methodology circumventing this timescale dependence by relating modern progradation rates to the deltaic shoreline progradation of ancient siliciclastic rocks. Our objective is to quantify how much time is needed to account for the observed cumulative deltaic shoreline progradation recorded by the shallow‐marine sandstone bodies of the Blackhawk Formation in terms of progradation rates derived from comparable modern deltaic systems. By making the simplifying assumption that the Blackhawk Formation rocks were deposited along a linear coastline that only grew by aggradation and progradation, it is possible to argue that the stratigraphic completeness of two‐dimensional dip‐oriented stratigraphic cross‐sections through these deposits should be high. Furthermore, we hypothesise that delta progradation estimates capture a significant portion of the biostratigraphically and radiometrically constrained duration of the succession. By comparing the recorded progradation with modern progradation rates, we estimate that we need ca. 20% (median value, with minimum and maximum estimates of 2% and 300%) of the time available from biostratigraphic and radiometric dating to account for the progradation recorded by the sedimentary deposits. This indicates that long‐term progradation rates averaged over the entire duration of the Blackhawk Formation were only a factor of five times slower than the modern progradation rates derived from observations over periods that are five to six orders of magnitude shorter. We conclude that a significant amount of time is represented by prograding deltaic shoreline deposits and that by considering the cumulative shoreline progradation, we could limit the effects of timescale dependence on the rate estimates used in our analysis. The Lochkovian, Pragian, and basal part of the Emsian, which represent the post-Kwangsian Orogeny strata in the South China Block, are mainly composed of siliciclastic rocks. This lithological composition impedes investigation of Pragian and Lochkovian conodont biostratigraphy in the South China Block, which results in a persistent controversy on the age of relevant lithological units. The present study provides new evidence by reporting for the first time Lochkovian conodonts obtained from the South China Block, specifically the Gaoling Member of the Nahkaoling Formation at the Lingli section, central Guangxi. The conodont fauna, consisting of Pandorinellina exigua lingliensis Lu n. subsp., Pandorinellina exigua exigua, Zieglerodina? tuojiangensis Lu n. sp., Amydrotaxis praejohnsoni, and Eognathodus cf. E. irregularis, places the studied interval of the Gaoling Member in the lower or middle Lochkovian (contingent upon varying definitions for the base of the middle Lochkovian) to lower Pragian. Moreover, Amydrotaxis praejohnsoni, which was reported previously only in North America and eastern Australia, is herein also recorded in the South China Block, and thus may play an important role in intercontinental biostratigraphical correlation. By shedding light on the age of the upper limit of the underlying Lianhuashan Formation at the Lingli section, the present study indicates that the Kwangsian Orogeny ended before the late Lochkovian. This date is slightly earlier than the previously estimated late Lochkovian based on studies of fossil plants from the siliciclastic rocks deposited after the Kwangsian Orogeny. The formation of the East Kunlun Orogen (EKO) was related to the tectonic evolution of the Proto-Tethys and Paleo-Tethys Oceans. However, how the Paleo-Tethys Ocean transited from the Proto-Tethys Ocean, and whether the Paleo-Tethys Ocean subducted northward beneath the East Kunlun–Qaidam Terrane in Carboniferous to Permian times, is still highly debated. Early Carboniferous Halaguole and Late Carboniferous to Early Permian Haoteluowa formations are extensively outcropped in the EKO, north Tibetan Plateau, and have thus recorded key information about the tectonic processes of the Paleo-Tethys Ocean that have implications for the reconstruction of the Northern Paleo-Tethys Ocean (Buqingshan Ocean). Siliciclastic rocks within these formations are collected for petrogeological, geochemical, and detrital zircon U–Pb dating research. Our results show that sandstones from Halaguole and Haoteluowa formations have an average total quartz–feldspar–lithic fragment ratio of Q67F12L21 and Q50F20L30, respectively, indicating relatively high compositional maturity. The geochemical results suggest that the average values of the Chemical Index of Alteration (CIA) are 57.83 and 64.66; together with their angular to subangular morphology, this indicates that their source rocks suffered from weak weathering and the sandstones are the result of proximal deposition. Geochemical features such as the low La/Th, TiO2, and Ni values suggest that the parental rocks in the provenance area are mainly acidic igneous rocks with minor intermediate igneous and old sedimentary components. The detrital zircon U–Pb age spectrum of these samples is dominated by age peaks at ~405–503 Ma and ~781–999 Ma, with subordinate age peaks at ~1610–2997 Ma and ~1002–1529 Ma, which show tectono–thermal events similar to those of the North Qimatag Belt (NQB), North Kunlun Terrane (NKT), and South Kunlun Terrane (SKT). These features suggest a contribution from the Early Paleozoic magmatic arc and Proterozoic basements in the NQB, NKT, and SKT to the Halaguole and Haoteluowa formations in these areas. In addition, the youngest zircon age of ~440 Ma from these sandstones is greater than the depositional age of Halaguole and Haoteluowa formations, which is a typical basin depositional feature in a passive continental margin. Geochemical tectonic discrimination diagrams, based on a major and trace element Ti/Zr–La/Sc plot, in combination with a detrital zircon age distribution pattern, all suggest a passive continental margin setting. Considering this together with the previous data, we argue that the Paleo-Tethys Ocean did not begin to subduct northward and that there was no oceanic subduction zone in the south EKO during Carboniferous to Early Permian times. Combining this information with that from previous studies suggests that the initial opening of the Paleo-Tethyan Ocean may have occurred before the Early Carboniferous time, and all the branches of the Paleo-Tethys Ocean constituted a complex ocean–continent configuration across parts of what is now Asia during the Early Carboniferous to Early Permian. The Eastern Dahomey Basin is a continental to shallow marine hydrocarbon-bearing basin formed as a marginal pull-apart basin during the Late Mesozoic and Cenozoic. The heterogeneity of the sedimentary deposits filling the basin makes accurate location and prediction of reservoir rocks and their properties difficult. This difficulty is further complicated by the poor understanding of diagenetic processes and timing, and their influence on porosity. A proper understanding of the heterogeneity of diagenetic events promises a better assessment of the reservoir quality evolution. Sampling of outcrop analogues and petrographic analyses allows the identification of detrital and authigenic components, as well as pore types, and allows delineating reservoir quality controls. Outcrop and shallow well samples from the Cretaceous (Ise, Afowo, Cretaceous Benin Flank, Araromi formations) and Palaeogene (Ewekoro, Akinbo-Oshosun, Ilaro formations) were retrieved from the surface or a maximum depth of 35.4 m and generally exhibit poor to excellent optical porosity (2.7 to 39.7%; avg.: 19.4%; n = 66) for the siliciclastic rocks of the basin. Porosity distribution is largely controlled by the clay mineral matrix content and Fe-mineral cementation. The main pore types are intergranular and intragranular. The sampled near-surface siliciclastic sediments are within the early diagenetic realm where only iron oxide (FeOx) and iron oxyhydroxide (FeO(OH)) cementation, minor kaolinite and pyrite precipitation, and feldspar and possible carbonate dissolution constitute the major diagenetic modifications. Furthermore, the occurrence of oil sands indicates that these shallow reservoir rocks have locally been charged. In comparison to shallow subsurface samples from the region, intense FeOx and FeO(OH) cementation is only observed in outcrops, while subsurface samples contain Fe-rich carbonate cements. Porosity reduction other than that associated with compaction (at greater depth) is predicted to be low unless carbonate cements are still preserved. Poor to fair optical porosity is present in the limestones, with values ranging from 0 to 6.3% (avg.: 2.6%, n = 11). The wackestone and packstone samples have the highest optical porosity ranging from 0.3 to 6.3% (avg.: 4.2%, n = 6). Sparry carbonate cements and lime mud in bioclastic wackestones and packstones reduced the available interparticle porosity (to 0%). The cementstones only contain negligible optical porosity while sparstones retain some porosity in intercrystalline pores between dolomite rhombs (0 to 0.7%). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

During the early Bajocian, a conspicuous coal-bearing siliciclastic succession was deposited in the northern Tabas Bock, which is important for understanding the regional geodynamics of the Central-East Iranian Microcontinent (CEIM) as well as for the Jurassic coal genesis in this part of Laurasia. Sedimentary facies analysis in a well-exposed section of the lower Bajocian Hojedk Formation (Kalshaneh area, northern Tabas Block) led to the recognition of ten characteristic sedimentary facies and three facies associations, representing channels with point bars and floodplains of a Bajocian meandering river system. Modal analysis indicates that the mature quartz arenites and quartzo-lithic sandstones of the Hojedk Formation originated from the erosion and recycling of older, supracrustal sedimentary rocks on the Yazd Block to the west. The coal petrography and maturity show an advanced maturation stage, whereas the great thickness of these continental strata points to a pronounced extension-related subsidence in the northern Tabas Block. The rapid rate of differential subsidence can be explained by accelerated normal block-faulting in the back-arc extensional basin of the CEIM, facing the Neotethys to the south. Compared to the thick Jurassic, the post-Jurassic strata are relatively thin and played a limited role in the thermal history of the coal in the northern Tabas Block. A relatively high geothermal gradient in the tectonically highly mobile area of the northern Tabas Block and/or heating by regionally widespread Palaeogene intrusions were most probably the key drivers of the thermal maturation of the Middle Jurassic coals. Geochemical study in the siliciclastic sediments of a basin provides an understanding of palaeoclimate, provenance and subsequently, it can be used to reconstruct the palaeo‐tectonics and evolution of the basin. Sedimentation in the Gondwana basins, worldwide, generally provides a record of climatic fluctuations and evidences of the Permo‐Triassic mass extinction. In spite of its global importance, our knowledge about the nature of sedimentation, basin development and conceptual regional tectonic model in the Satpura Basin, one of the Gondwana basins of India is limited. Major and trace element concentrations of the mudstones from the Denwa Formation along with the existing geochemical data of other formations are studied here for establishing a comprehensive idea about the palaeoclimate, tectonic settings, provenance and basin evolution. The composition of the sediments in the lowermost Talchir Formation revealed cold and dry climatic conditions at the sources, whereas the sources of the sediments for the overlying formations have experienced warm, humid and semiarid climates. The contributions of the mafic rock‐derived sediments are relatively higher in the Talchir, Barakar and Motur formations compared to the overlying formations. Approximately 60% of the sediments in the overlying Bijori, Pachmarhi and Denwa formations were derived from the felsic volcanic rocks and granites of the Sausar Mobile Belt and Betul‐Chindwara Mobile Belt (BCMB) with minor inputs from mafic volcanic rocks of the BCMB. Furthermore, the sediments of the Talchir Formation were derived from the BCMB when they became tectonically active, whereas the sediments in the younger formations have been derived from a passive tectonic setting. West Papua province in eastern Indonesia is positioned in a dynamic tectonic zone along with the collision of the Australian, Pacific, and Eurasian plates. The interaction resulted in the formation of strike-slip faults such as Koor, Sorong, Ransiki, and Yapen, that are prone to earthquakes in the region. The rocks of West Papua in the northern part are a contribution to the Pacific Ocean plate consisting of ophiolite and volcanic arcs of the archipelago, even while the rocks of the Australian plate in the southern part are dominated by quaternary and siliciclastic sedimentary. It has a wide variety of resources, including oil and gas. This study combines the interpretation of regional gravity and magnetic data derived from satellite observations to identify the subsurface structure of West Papua. This is performed since most studies were conducted on the surface and did not significantly focus on the subsurface. The composition of subsurface is determined through three-dimensional (3-D) unconstrained inversion modeling using the iterative reweighting inversion of regional gravity and magnetic anomalies as a function of density contrast and magnetic susceptibility of rocks. In depth variations, gravity inversion produces density contrast ranging from − 0.348 to 0.451 gr/cm3, whereas magnetic inversion provides rock susceptibility varying between − 0.363 and 0.223 SI. Gravity and magnetic inversions characterize the subduction of the Pacific Ocean plate in the north, extensive intrusion of igneous rocks, and low density-susceptibility contrast in the Bintuni basin as a source of oil and natural gas. The boundary between the sediment layer and the basement is believed to be 15–20 km deep, with rocks from the uplifted mantle in the north and a Silur-Devon aged Kemum formation in the south. The Szeged Basin (S Hungary) occupies a relatively central position within the European Alpine–Carpathian–Dinaride orogenic belt. An ongoing controversy about the tectonic position of the study area indicates that its evolution is still not fully understood; however, several important hydrocarbon occurrences are known in the fractured basement reservoirs. The main aim of this contribution is to investigate the petrographic features and possible Alpine metamorphic conditions of volcanic/volcanoclastic and siliciclastic rocks from the Kelebia basement area. Due to the outcrop conditions and poor exposure, study samples are obtained from cores and core chips resulting from oil exploration. Based on an evaluation of petrographic (including also cathodoluminescence analysis) and microstructural features, joined with mineralogical and metamorphic data such as "illite crystallinity" and K-white mica crystallite size obtained by X-ray powder diffractometry (XRPD), a very low- to low-grade (ca. 300°C) Alpine metamorphic imprint of this portion of the basement can be proposed. Several deformation characteristics (deformation lamellae in quartz, deformation twins in dolomite, fragmented porphyroclasts, and strain shadows) were recognized in the studied samples, showing a weakly to moderately developed disjunctive foliation in the Permian rocks, as well as quartz veinlets, microcracks, and fluid inclusion planes in the Lower Triassic sandstones. Most likely, one of the Cretaceous orogenic events, namely, the "Turonian" phase (Early–Late Cretaceous nappe stacking), resulted in the prograde greenschist facies metamorphism in the study area, instead of the burial depth. We propose that the Permo-Triassic cover succession was also affected by shearing episodes accompanied by fluid migrations along the contact zone between the tectonic units. The scientific approach and dataset provided here are examples of how the application of XRPD parameters of phyllosilicates and micropetrographic observations can help to understand the evolution of an orogen and improve knowledge about the basement structure. The Upper Cretaceous (Maastrichtian) Lameta Formation is well-known for its osteological and oological remains of sauropods from the eastern and western parts of the Narmada Valley, central India. The newly documented ninety-two titanosaur clutches from Dhar District (Madhya Pradesh State, central India) add further to this extensive data. Previously parataxonomy of these titanosaur clutches was carried out with a few brief reports on palaeobiological and taphonomic aspects. The quantitative data collected from the new clutches (this study) opens avenues to additionally understand more about titanosaur palaeobiology and to qualitatively understand preservation and taphonomical aspects of their egg clutches. Herein, we document 256 eggs and three clutch patterns (viz. circular, combination, linear) that are assignable to six oospecies. The high oospecies diversity points to a possible high diversity in titanosaur taxa in the Indian sub-continent though it is not reflected in titanosaurid body fossils. All the macro- and micro-structures helped in understanding egg deformation and preservation from a taphonomic point of view. Additionally, a pathologic egg documented from the study area helped in understanding the reproductive biology of titanosaurs, such as the possibility of segmented oviduct and sequential laying of eggs by titanosaurs. In addition, we made an attempt to infer aspects such as egg burial, absence of parental care, colonial nesting behavior. All the egg clutches were observed within sandy limestone and calcareous sandstone lithologies that occur in scattered outcrops with rocks showing floating siliciclastic grains in a micritic groundmass. Further, the presence of ferruginous sandstone in the Jamniapura and Padlya regions (Dhar District, central India) is indicative of a possible alluvial/fluvial setting. The presence of grainy intraclastic fabric, alveolar-septal fabrics, brecciation and shrinkage cracks observed in the clutch-bearing rocks are indicative of a low energy-low gradient palustrine depositional condition in a fluvial/alluvial setting. Finally, we envisage that a few egg clutches of this area were laid close to lake/pond margins while most were laid away from the lake/pond margins, and thus, were hatched. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

On Bjørnøya, the exhumed crest of the Stappen High, the lower Permian (Cisuralian) Hambergfjellet Formation represents the only exposed part of the Bjarmeland Group carbonate platform, which occurs widely elsewhere in the subsurface of the Barents Shelf. A complex stratigraphic architecture has earlier been noted for the Hambergfjellet Formation and thickness estimates range from c. 50 to more than 100 m. Moreover, the unit lacks a formal type section, which hampers accurate regional correlations and comparisons. In this stratigraphic study, we integrate new field observations and microfacies analysis with data from previous work to present a composite section which is proposed as the type section for the Hambergfjellet Formation. Four internal units are recognized. Units A and B (post late Asselian-Sakmarian), which consist of mixed carbonate and siliciclastic rocks interpreted to be of shallow marine origin, are restricted to a series of fault-bounded basins defined by gently rotated basement fault blocks. Locally, units A and B onlap or truncate lowermost Permian strata and appear to transgressively fill in antecedent topography presumably created during Sakmarian uplift and erosion of the Stappen High. The distorted character of unit A suggests that slumping was an important process during the initial phase of infilling, amid or soon after transgression. Unit C (Sakmarian-early Artinskian) is a thick-bedded, sheet-like limestone unit which contains fauna elements consistent with deposition on a warm-water carbonate platform occasionally subject to subaerial exposure. Unit D (late Artinskian) is a brachiopod-dominated, fusulinid-bearing, bioclastic limestone unit deposited on a fully marine, transitional warm-temperate to cool-water carbonate platform which developed during a late Artinskian circum-Arctic transgression. The unit only occurs in the eastern part of the outcrop belt on southern Bjørnøya due to fault-controlled tilting and peneplanation prior to deposition of the Miseryfjellet Formation (Kungurian-Wordian) limestones. Distinct evidence, including breccia pipes, points to prolonged exposure and karstification of the Hambergfjellet Formation carbonate platform prior to transgression and submergence of the Stappen High in the middle to late Permian (Guadalupian). The presence of angular and highly diachronous unconformities at the base and top of the formation, a series of small grabens, internal dip variations, as well as a conspicuous north to northeastward thinning manifest tectonism pre-dating the late Permian extensional event along the western Barents Shelf margin. The western Iberian Chain of NE Spain represents a lateral prolongation of the West Asturian-Leonese Zone. As other proximal sectors fringing NW Gondwana, the chain comprises a con­formable and continuous Furongian‒Tremadocian transition, comprising a thick (3600‒4500 m) Lower Ordovician sedimentary succession, exclusively composed of siliciclastic strata and deposited in mid-latitude (temperate) waters. Although the shelly fossil record is not abundant, some key trilobites and brachiopods allow the identification of distinct biogeographic links with the Argentinian margin of West Gondwana, Oaxaca (Mexico), and the neighbouring Montagne Noire (France), with which a common biostratigraphic biozonation can be enviaged. Two phosphoritic interbeds rich in linguliformean brachiopods punctuate the Valconchán and Borrachón formations, and represent event beds related to condensation processes and sedimentation of explosive ignimbritic tuffs, respectively. The tank deposits are small sedimentary bodies of quaternary age that fill natural tanks in rocky outcrops, especially granite plains (lajedos) and domes, in the semiarid region of Northeastern Brazil. These deposits are, in most cases, stratified siliciclastic sediments and, eventually, fossiliferous, preserving remains of a diverse prehistoric megafauna that inhabited the area during the Late Pleistocene - Early Holocene. In the present work, the deposit that fills the interior of the fossiliferous natural tank Jirau 01, in the Paleontological Site Jirau - municipality of Itapipoca (CE), corresponds to the main target of investigation. The analysis of samples collected in the field indicates that the depositional dynamics is related to the action of several factors that influenced the surface processes and the transport of sediments in different space-time scales. There is evidence of erosive-depositional pulses, above all, events related to the remobilization of alteration mantles - resulting from physical-chemical weathering around the paleontological site - and flakes of desquamation in a saprolitic state on the side wall of the tank that provided part of the material sediment from the tank deposit. This discussion subsidizes, even at the local scale level, the understanding of the geologicalgeomorphological and paleontological reconstitution of the northeastern semi-arid region. The well‐known Baraboo Interval quartzites in the Laurentian midcontinent are a succession of mature red siliciclastic strata, locally more than 1.5 km thick, and covering an area >300,000 km2, much if not all of which was deposited after the Mazatzal orogeny (<1.63 Ga), and before the Baraboo Orogeny (~1.47 Ga). Ca. 1,300 new LA‐ICPMS detrital zircon ages from six Baraboo Interval inliers in Wisconsin and the Sioux Quartzite in South Dakota, USA attest to significant distal provenances not previously recognized. The principal ~1.8–1.9 Ga and >2.5 Ga age peaks represent local, southern Superior province sediment source areas. Yet more than 30% of our dataset includes ages between 1.9 and 2.5 Ga which are essentially absent from the region. We interpret these non‐locally derived zircons to have been transported ~2,500 km southeast to the Columbian supercontinental margin. The subsequent accretion of the Mazatzal terrane caused a major drainage reorganization, and transport of sediment for the uppermost Baraboo interval strata was north rather than south‐directed. The provenance and tectonic setting of the Middle Triassic siliciclastic rocks from the Malipo basin, western Dian‐Qiong suture, South China have been examined using the detrital mode, geochemistry and detrital zircon U–Pb dating. The petrological and geochemical results indicate increasing degrees of weathering, sorting and sediment recycling from north to south. Given the detrital zircon ages, we suggest that the sediments within the northern and southern Malipo basin have multiple provenances and distinctive tectonic settings, including (1) the former was deposited in a fore‐arc setting with derivation from mixed Late Permian–Middle Triassic volcanic arc and uplifted Palaeozoic sequences and (2) the latter deposited in the passive margin of the Northern Vietnam terrane with the predominate derivation from recycled Early Palaeozoic orogen and uplifted Palaeozoic and Precambrian successions. These sediments should be tectonically juxtaposed during the Late Triassic due to the closure of the Paleo‐Tethys branch ocean and the continued South China‐Indochina collision. In the course of raw material depletion, uneconomic production, climate change, and the energy transition, European hard coal mining areas are subject to change. Besides social and economic consequences for mining sites, these changes also involve the rebound of ground water that changes the local stress state and may induce ground movements, microseismicity, and gas anomalies. In order to contribute to the understanding of the geomechanical coupling of subsurface stress changes and surface ground movements, we present and discuss petrographic and petrophysical data of Upper Carboniferous (Westphalian B–C), fluvial, tight (most porosities <10%, most permeabilities <1 mD) sandstones and siltstones from the former Ibbenbueren coal mine in NW Germany where mine flooding currently proceeds. Varying and comparatively high compressional (3,809–6,656 m/s) and shear wave velocities (2,126–3,723 m/s), and Young’s moduli (31.3–80.9 GPa) are associated with Cretaceous maximum burial by which the textural framework was predominantly mechanically compacted and subordinately cemented by syntaxial quartz overgrowths. Grain size (0.008–1.1 mm) as a function of the depositional environment controls wave velocities and Young’s moduli. In contrast, the range of Poisson’s ratios (0.09–0.31) is typical for sandstones and depends on stress history, depositional and diagenetic mineralogy. Consequently, the textural and mineralogical heterogeneities of the sample set result in variations in wave velocities, Young’s moduli, and Poisson’s ratios. These petrophysical properties are crucial for the poroelastic behaviour of the subsurface and need to be considered in case studies, which model post-mining ground movements as a result of mine flooding. In the same paragraph of his comment, Reijmer quotes: "It needs to be mentioned that the water depth in the basin surrounding the Llucmajor carbonate platform, which forms the base of an extensive series of carbonate factory studies by Pomar between 1991 and 2020 (e.g. Pomar, 1991, 1993, 2001a,b, 2020; Pomar & Haq, 2016), was approx. 50 m (Pomar, 1991, fig. 3), and consequently the major part of the biota populating the platform margin to basin transect were situated in the photic zone. The same type of approach allowed documentation of the migration of the scleractinians upward in the water column from the mesophotic into the euphotic zone, when the first modern type of reefs appeared and developed in shallow and highly agitated waters above the chlorocline (Pomar, 2001b, 2020; Pomar & Hallock, 2007, 2008; Pomar I et al i ., 2017). We respectfully disagree with this statement for the following reasons: Pomar uses the carbonate factories as a I dynamic i analytical tool, something that many researchers acknowledge, for understanding the facies architecture of the different types of carbonate platforms (see Pomar & Ward, 1995; Pomar, 2001a, 2020; Pomar & Kendall, 2008; Pomar & Haq, 2016) and not as a I static i concept for the classification and labelling of carbonate platform systems. The Holocene shows rapid climatic changes associated with alternating intervals of glacier advances and retreats. The coastal regions, where beach ridges constitute common preserved landforms, are highly sensitive to register such changes and bring light into past littoral environments. Excellent marine Argentinean Holocene deposits associated with the last climate optimum are preserved at the Río de la Plata estuary (Argentina). In this beach ridge, fourteen detailed sedimentary logs were studied in order to generate an palaeoenvironmental model. The analysis of major hierarchy surfaces of the ridge was performed combined field work and Virtual-Outcrop analysis. The ridge presents internal clinoforms that subdivide it into eleven clinothems. The first two clinothems correspond to the development of a sand ridge as a response to the erosion and reworking of previous aeolian Late Pleistocene sediments. Subsequently, a bioclastic ridge was amalgamated with the sand ridge (clinothems III to XI). Simultaneously, in a landward position, a lagoon and washover deposits were developed. Finally, after the stabilization of the beach ridge the continuous sea level fall generated the actual coastal plain deposits. Six 14C ages were obtained at the base of selected clinothems, dated between 5,240 ± 110 cal BP and 3,900 ± 90 cal BP; meaning that in 1,340 years the beach prograded 290 m. Stable isotope analyses (δ13C and δ18O) allowed to infer that the temperature during the evolution of the ridge has two maximum values of 22.5 °C and a minimum of 18.5 °C. The salinity range between 32.53‰ and 33.16‰, showing short variability. The sudden change in the composition of the ridge, from sandy to carbonate sediments, may be interpreted as a combined result of an increase of carbonate productivity along with a decrease of siliciclastic supply at the coast. This stage would have been developed approximately around 5ka B.P., in coincidence with the Holocene Climatic Optimum (as recorded in Argentina) when propitious climatic conditions may have led to the proliferation of large communities of warm and warm temperate benthic organisms. We stress that, the strong activity of the Brazilian current during the Mid-Holocene thermal maximum enabled excellent conditions for the development of a carbonate warm beach similar to that occurring at tropical and subtropical areas nowadays. This study provides an example of the strong changes occurred in coastal environments as a result of climate change, particularly in the context of global warming episodes which characterized interglacial periods of the Late Quaternary in eastern South America.
