Watoto wa Maman'tilie (lit. Children of a Woman Street Food Vendor), a Swahili novel by a Tanzanian writer Emmanuel Mbogo, narrates the horrendous experiences of children who are forced to drop out of school and become street children. The novel also narrates their survival strategies in the periphery of the city. This article discusses how the novel uses musical figures including songs by renowned African popular musicians, Swahili local dances and music genres as semiotic resources to represent and criticise the urban forms of marginality and the resulting experiences of the urban underclass. In this essay I seek to place Andy Weir’s The Martian (2011) in discourse with two imbricated genres: the political and cultural history of the American frontier, embodied, in this case, in the archetype of the yeoman, and the scientific and fictional history of Mars. The red planet has historically served as a site where, by way of the mythic American frontier, authors have sought imaginary solutions to contemporary anxieties. In the case of The Martian, Andy Wier draws upon the intellectual heritage of the American yeoman to present Mars as a habitable alternative to the Earth. His rhetoric is problematic not only because it lessens the apparent urgency of interventions into global climate change, but also because it reinforces the apparent verisimilitude of a certain version of American history. The Martian, I argue, represents the latest fold in the Martian fantasy of American frontierism in that it presents a version of the America’s mythic past centered upon the white male experience and free of human or ecological victims. It thus seeks to sustain and invigorate a literary tradition predicated upon cultural, environmental, and physical violence as well as the marginalization of people of color in narratives of American history. The theatrical production of Baroque Iberia exhibits an obsession with wildness that remains to be fully explored. By the time Segismundo takes the stage dressed in animal pelts in Calderón's La vida es sueño, the wild figure had already enjoyed a long history on the Spanish stage, first appearing in Lope de Vega's El nacimiento de Ursón y Valentín in 1588. Enduring popularity until Bances Candamo's 1693 comedia, La piedra filosofal, this steady preoccupation with the concept of wildness offers unique insights on the evolving landscape of Baroque ideologies over time, which are rarely considered diachronically. Dramatic representations of wildness signify the transgression of a prescribed norm—be it social, political, racial, or otherwise—which leads to its necessary elimination to resolve the conflict of a given play. In this article, I will plot the trajectory of dramatic conventions in their diminishing ability to resolve the recurring problem of wildness, thus offering a literary history of the comedia's social efficacy as it struggled to sustain the weight of its own ideological commitments. Furthermore, I will examine the implications of my approach on longstanding debates on the ideological function of Baroque Iberian drama by analyzing the theoretical problem inherent in the existence of the marginal terrain wildness inhabits. My approach considers who stands to benefit from social order and those who, like the wild figure, find themselves excluded. Hence, it is argued in this work that besides writing beautifully and achieving a unity of ideas, a careful reading of the books reveals that the writer is not at ease with the conditions of women and thus, she places a spotlight on them via themes of feminism. The recent upsurge in the global circulations of post-colonial subjects recapitulates forms of mobility historically facilitated by mercantilism and colonialism. The same logic of capital accumulation that dispatched imperial agents in search of new territories appears to be at work in determining the periphery-metropole circulations of post-colonial subjects, who navigate these same routes as voluntary or forced migrants, expatriates, asylum-seekers, exiles, etc. For these mobile subjects, negotiating entry into imperial metropolises activates similar racial logic that spurred slavery and colonialism, with far-reaching implications for how the activated racial marginalisation determines relationships with host societies and among the decentred groups themselves. I explore the ideas above drawing on Abdulrazak Gurnah's By the Sea and Caryl Phillips's The Atlantic Sound as narratives that represent long histories of cultural flows across the Indian and Atlantic oceans, with Britain as their point of both convergence and divergence. This paper analyzes three novels by Chilean writer Diamela Eltit: Lumpérica, Los vigilantes and Los trabajadores de la muerte, considering geographical space and the body as the center of power relations and the materiality of the body as a container for a historical violence that attempts to subject it to various forms of normalization. Despite the violence inflicted, this body is also a form of resistance that enshrines, in its own materiality, narrative memory in order to retell the past and criticize the present. The aim is to develop a political interpretation of history through the body in order to interpret the signs of social and mental distress of a society that continually attempts to erase its past. James Baldwin’s stories concentrate on racially and sexually marginalized identities placed within cosmopolitan capitals (Paris and New York). In such novels as Another Country, Baldwin explores antonyms, contrasting ideals and ideologies, and the formation of nonconforming relationships. Individual desire and external social pressure create a complex tension that pulls white and black, homo- and heterosexual characters toward and away from each other. Space repeatedly appears as reflective of the inner landscapes of the characters who are intricately linked to the space in which they act. Similar tensions that characterize their inner conflicts appear also in the concept of cosmopolitanism that defines the cities they inhabit. Indeed, a cosmopolitan world citizen, who is at home everywhere but not belonging anywhere, is torn between opposing forces, between inclusion and exclusion. The article examines a variety of social exclusion and inclusion indicators grouped by domains that are commonly referred to in the social exclusion literature: economic, social, political and intra-household. Levels of social exclusion and inclusion among different groups of women across these domains are studied. This analysis reveals a complex pattern with great variations among women with different socio-demographic and socio-cultural backgrounds. Subsequently we perform a factor (principal components) analysis that identifies four major dimensions of women's social exclusion and inclusion: outward orientation, civil society involvement, household decision-making power and monetary income. These four dimensions help us uncover factors that have contributed to the social inclusion of women, from a position of exclusion a generation ago. Crucial drivers of change have been education and urbanisation, but participation in community-based organisations has also contributed. We find that gender relations in the household are the most resistant to change and cannot be easily influenced by external change agents. There appear to be different mechanisms operating for social inclusion within each of the identified dimensions. This means there is no blueprint for any policy measures that would increase social inclusion along all the four dimensions, but measures should be specifically designed for each dimension. The crime novelist Didier Daeninckx originally established himself as an author of historical crime fiction. His 1984 novel, Meurtres pour mémoire, in particular challenged occluded and intertwined memories of the Occupation and the Algerian War of Independence. Since then, and through his subsequent writings and political activities, Daeninckx has been recognised as giving voice to a range of marginalised communities and memories. Much academic study has therefore concentrated on the recovery of the past in Daeninckx’s fiction, approaching his work from the perspective of cultural history and memory studies, considering it a form of memory activism. This article offers a new perspective on Daeninckx’s political engagement. It will examine Daeninckx’s three contributions to Éditions Baleine’s collaboratively authored detective series Le Poulpe: Nazis dans le métro (1996), Éthique en toc (2000) and La Route du Rom (2003). It will argue that they are informed by a memory of France’s broad libertarian tradition which constitutes a hidden referent essential to understanding the formulation of the ethico-political counter-communities to which many of his characters (and his ideal, implied reader) belong. More particularly, it will argue that these communities form the basis of a new model of political engagement beyond party, state and class, suggesting not only the persistence but also the adaptability of libertarian thinking in Daeninckx’s work and the French roman noir. This article engages North African Women's writing their unique identities in the epistolary form as depicted in the anthology,Women Writing Africa: The Northern Region.The epistolary or letter form is a unique genre. On one hand, the form of a letter is personal, and lays claim to private experiences whose content is the confidential lives of those who write them. And yet, on the other hand, the contents of an epistolary form can be thrust into the public domain where the lives on which it narrates is read by many people for the interest it can generate when the form assumes the figure of a metaphoric allegory. In the anthology, there are six letters written by women, touching on themes of slavery, sisterhood, marginality and the quest for political freedom in a patriarchal-dominated North African community. It is curious to observe that North African women who represented their experiences in the form of the letters did so against the repression of this form from the predominance of realism, song and political treatise. This article argues that the editors ofWomen Writing Africa: The Northern Regioncan be accused of bias in their selection that privileges literary forms ordinarily associated with men's preference for classical realism. Despite this literary imbalance, the epistolary form effects some form of resistance to ideological and literary enforcements. The epistolary form also attempts to manage contradictory identities revealed on the spectrum of differences in how women shape their identities. Thus, the epistolary form functions in an ambiguous way; it affirms as well as interrogates patriarchy and also critiques the writings on women by women who write for men or like men. The article discusses the works of Randall Kenan which focused on Southern Renaissance writers. In Kenan's novel "A Visitation of Spirits," he focuses on the narrative of Horace Cross, whose homosexuality compels his mad dance along multiple social margins. It was noted that Kenan acknowledges the importance of Southern Renaissance writers in his literary imagination. Background: Scholars of children's literature have been investigating portrayals of females and racial groups fo r several decades, yet few have examined depictions of social class. Research on social class depictions in children's literature is needed in order to identify books that affirm children's class identities and offer portrayals of socioeconomic diversity. Focus of the Study: This study investigates portrayals of social class in 35 titles receiving the Batchelder Award or Honor between 2001 and 2013. The Batchelder Award recognizes outstanding translated books with international origins. International books for children were selected in this study because American titles are thought to be middle class in orientation; the researchers hypothesized that the international books might provide a more complex analysis of social class. Research Design: The inductive approach to qualitative content analysis was utilized. At least two researchers read and coded each book in the sample. The researchers examined passages referencing social class as well as other cultural constructs such as race/ethnicity, gender, religion, and nationality. Findings: The researchers identified several markers that served as indicators of social class status: living conditions, food, safety and protection, healthcare, leisure, education, occupation, residence, speech and mannerisms, clothing/dress, death rituals, and material possessions. Social class was often associated with other identities such as a character's religion or ethnicity. Characters from typically marginalized class groups, such as the poor and the working class, were portrayed sensitively and with dignity. Conclusions: The markers of class identified in this study may serve as a framework fo r other researchers interested in examining class in children's literature or media. Facing the question why Juan L. Ortiz is a marginal poet, the continuation of different critical texts produced between 1940 and 2000 is made to see how the poet is categorized and political ethical aspects are integrated to the poetic conception and to the poetry of Juan Ele. Likewise it is analyzed in what ways the cultural field is placed along those decades, depending on the political-ideological position in relation to communism and the utopian of restitution of the whole harmony trampled to every human being. Two philosophers enlighten this journey Ernst Bloch and his concept that the utopian has been just a "dream dreamed awake" for a long time, and Jacques Ranciere who assigns to literature and art the possibility of giving new light to the previous obscuration or unseen. This variation is analyzed from a point of view that incorporates the space in equality of conditions that time, being considered both as constitutive of the historical-social and political relations. Nevertheless it is in the poetical and artistic perceptions that time turns up to be crossed in its density, it turns vertical, and it may be known beyond the reason. In this sense, the poetical-political thinking of Juan Ele is especially heterodox to Marxism being Marxist, and his perception of the landscape moves away from the local color and from the nationalist rhetoric. Besides it is observed that to this possible causes of marginality, of the construction of a "rare poet", it is add as determining the social practice of the genocide that included the burning of many books, among them the complete work of Juan Ele edited by the Vigil Library in 1970. This paper examines the role that systemic theories came to play in the research of Xoán González-Millán. First, we reconstruct the overarching theoretical framework present in the 1900s with regard to the study of literatures marked by marginalization and dependency, focusing on the founding of a model of institutional analysis geared for application to the Galician context. The second half of the paper focuses on Gonzalez-Millán’s criticism of systemic-based proposals. This criticism, begun in the late 1990s, is based on an epistemological openness to other theoretical frameworks, such as theories dealing with the public sphere or subalternity. Over the past 30 years a growing body of scholarship has highlighted the significance of practices of punishment and penality within contemporary Western societies. Penal expansionism, most dramatically evidenced in the United States, has drawn the attention of a raft of commentators, including that of French sociologist Loïc Wacquant. This article analyses the literary work of Laura Pariani (1951-), a writer who, over the last twenty years, has gained a niche position in the contemporary canon. After situating Pariani in the context of Italian fiction in the 1990s-2010s, the analysis focuses on the 'centrality of margins' as the inspiring principle underpinning her production. In Pariani's writings marginality - geographical, gender-based, generational, linguistic - becomes a privileged point of view from which to assess the world. The protagonists of her works are women, but also children, immigrants, the socially marginalized, often dialect speakers, or those caught in situations of opposition to or compromise with the 'language of power', covering a chronological range from the sixteenth century to today. The decision to place those whom History has ignored at the centre of the stories, to give voice to the voiceless, is investigated here with a focus on multilingualism, on the places of narration, and on narrative structures, and is related back to the author's youthful militancy in the youth movements of the 1970s, including Milan's feminist collectives. The present paper studies Diamela Eltit's Lumpérica (1983) as an artistic postmodern instance of historical criticism by way of a restitution of all public symbols of protest in a city invaded by fear and silence. This critical attitude towards all kinds of totalitarianism is voiced by the tatterdemalions of the 'lumpenry', by a woman with multiple faces, by subversive writing methods, by collective sceneries dismantled by vigilance and terror. The article analyzes the novel "Native Speaker" by Chang-rae Lee. It examines the books' portrayal of the social and political marginalization of immigrants in New York City, noting Lee's use of ash imagery inspired by the novel "The Great Gatsby" by F. Scott Fitzgerald to accomplish this. Similarities between Lee's narrator Henry Park and Fitzgerald's narrator Nick Carraway are presented in terms of their description of their social surroundings and references to ash.

Bernardin de Saint-Pierre's remarkable first publication (1773) is considered here in broad terms, but also as the 'founding' work of an oeuvre best known for the Etudes de la nature and Paul et Virginie. Compared with other contemporary voyage narratives, it is characterized by a freer structure, strong social critique, intense sensibility, and personal voice. It sympathetically depicts disadvantaged groups (from Breton fisher families to black slaves on Mauritius), and advocates a free agriculture connoting (especially at the Dutch Cape) stability and plenty. This paper examines a group of Latin American texts and films from the last two decades which show growing social, political and economic inequality in the continent, together with cultural practices and experiences, from an urban perspective. With the configuration of space in the Latin American city as the central theme, the paper explores the way in which these narratives reformulate classic notions of urban design with the scope of presenting, in their place, a distinct space, with specific codes that act as alternative forms of avoiding the influence of globalisation and neoliberal policies. A literary criticism for the book "Zeitoun," by Dave Eggers is presented. Particular focus is given to the book's theme of what is referred to as disidentification, which is the transformation of a society's dominant group narrative into a narrative that affirms the culture of socially marginalized people. It discusses Eggers' use of the aftermath of the 2005 Hurricane Katrina to highlight the social conditions of diasporic people and refugees.

Catherine Banks's Three Storey, Ocean View explores the concept of home from the perspective of a prospective buyer, Peg, and four families who had previously lived in the house listed for sale. In keeping with Henri Lefebvre's definition of social space, the space of this home is shown to be both physically and temporally determined as the past occupants remain on stage, in the house, for the scenes of the present day, and Peg and her family respond to their movements and dialogue. Many of these former inhabitants have been disenfranchised through race, poverty, language, or disability and, for them, home is a prison as much as a shelter. Examining the house through Una Chaudhuri's theory of geopathology reveals not only the instability of home and the ruptures between individual and community, home and the surrounding environment, but also the psychogeopathology of those who live there. In addition, both the playtext and the productions of 2000 and 2003 emphasize the vertical structure of the house, which reflects the architecture of Gaston Bachelard's oneiric house. This paper reflects on how the corporeality of women's bodies frames their experiences, options, and choices. Through a reading of Yvonne Vera's Without a Name and Butterfly Burning, the paper suggests that Vera explores interactions between discursive practices and the embodied experience of these discourses for women living on the extreme margins of society. This reading suggests that these women's lived experiences as played out by, and on their bodies, are central in shaping the choices they make and their exercise of agency. Further, the essay argues, these women's responses, while appealing to seemingly extravagant and melodramatic tropes, in the contexts of their circumstances articulate a radical reconceptualization of agency and resistance. Most remarkably, Vera's women force us to rethink ideas about nature/sex/body as rigid and immutable, and therefore an unviable site of intervention in gender struggles. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The novel The Uncle's Story by New Zealand Maori Witi Ihimaera tells a story within a story, recounting the coming out narratives of two Maori gay men who lived 25 years apart in the same family. The novel is examined in light of Bacon's (1998) discussion of the possibility of a cultural rhetoric of the queer movement for liberation. Representations of self in the two Maori gay men's stories both challenge and sustain essential notions of sexual identity and contemporary theories of rhetorical practice. Ihimaera's fictional representations of coming out capture the complexity and nuance of coming-out experiences in a way that expressivist accounts of actual coming-out stories may obliterate or obscure. In this novel Ihimaera extends the artistic representation of gay culture he presented in Nights in the Gardens of Spain in a way that does not fall apart under close scrutiny because it does not oversimplify what happens in the same way that truth-telling often does.
