Harry Thornton and Leslie Rae were the Editors of the BAA Lunar Section publication The Moon from 1953 to 1967, during which period charting the lunar surface visually was superseded by professional astronomical photography and early space probe imagery. As a result, lunar contributions to The Moon dried up and, after Rae's resignation, the publication ceased. Thornton and Rae were very prominent figures in the BAA of the 1 950s and 1960s, yet no obituaries of them were ever published in the journal. The aim of this paper is to address those omissions. A brief history of the creation of star orientation sensors at the Space Research Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences (IKI RAS) and star catalogs for them is presented. An experiment carried out in the early 1970s on synchronous photography of stars and the Earth's surface from the manned stations Salyut-2 and -3 is described. The difficulties of entering photographs into electronic computers (computers) of that time are shown. Based on the SAO, Hipparcos and Gaia star catalogs, about 11000 microcatalogs have been compiled around the brightest stars in the celestial sphere. Each of them contains in the center one star with a magnitude of up to 7.8m and all the surrounding stars up to 13m within a radius of 15′. The microcatalogs are combined into the "Basic Star Catalog," which in the near future will be used to compile onboard star catalogs for the orientation sensors of the BOKZ family of spacecraft. To work with the base catalog, two programs have been developed and are used in test mode: Catalog Guide and Star Manager. The first program is designed to view the base catalog, visualize its fragments and compile lists of stars with specified parameters. The second program is of a computational and analytical nature. It contains mathematical models of star orientation sensors of the BOKZ family, as well as a mathematical apparatus that allows for detailed modeling of the most subtle elements of onboard data processing. Both programs can operate in manual and automatic modes. A sequence of actions worked out manually on several stars can then be performed automatically for large lists of stars. Half a century separates us from the dawning of satellite oceanography. Aircraft flights, photographs from early space missions, and data from meteorological satellites in the 1960s already provided glimpses of the future role of remote sensing in marine science. A first generation of dedicated ocean-viewing satellites followed in the 1970s. The "Oceans from Space" conference series, which convenes every ten years in Venice, Italy, started in 1980, when unprecedented data sets originated by a second generation of satellites, SEASAT, TIROS-N, and NIMBUS-7, were just beginning to be analyzed. When "Oceans from Space II" was held in 1990, no major new missions were operating. However, in the 1990s, a third generation of missions were underway, based on a longer satellite series and larger orbital platform. By the time "Oceans from Space III" was held in 2000, increasing data quality, accessibility, and usability were contributing to the growth of this young research field. "Oceans from Space IV", in 2010, came at a time when remote sensing was already in everyday use as part of the marine scientist's standard toolkit. "Oceans from Space V", delayed by the COVID pandemic until 2022, offered a scientific and technical program reflecting the astounding panorama of missions, instruments, and innovations available today. Ice cover on lakes is subject to atmospheric forcing from above and the influence of water dynamics and heat flux from below. One characteristic example of these influences in some large lakes, such as Lake Baikal in Russia, are the giant ice rings and the associated eddies under the ice cover. In April 2020 a giant ice ring appeared in southern Baikal, and a lens-like eddy was detected below the ice. We analysed the temporal changes of ice cover using satellite images from multiple satellite missions – MODIS on Terra and Aqua, Sentinel-1 SAR, Sentinel 2 MSI, Landsat 8, PlanetScope, satellite photography from the International Space Station, and radar altimetry data from Jason-3. Satellite imagery and meteorological data show unusual temporal changes of ice colour in April 2020, which were explained by water infiltration into the ice followed by the competing influences of cold air from above and the warm eddy below the ice. Tracking of ice floe displacement also makes it possible to estimate eddy currents and their influence on the upper water layer. Multi-satellite data contribute to a better understanding of the development of ice cover in the presence of eddies, the role of eddies in horizontal and vertical heat and mass exchange, and their impact on the chemistry and biology of the lakes and on human activity. China's Chang'e‐4 (CE‐4) probe will explore the South Pole‐Aitken basin in late 2018. Its preselected landing area is located on the southeastern floor of the Von Kármán crater. Landing experience of China's Chang'e‐3 probe may not be applied to CE‐4 mission directly because the topography of lunar farside is more rugged. Moreover, due to scale dependence and smooth effects, the previous topographic studies derived from digital elevation model data with lower resolution cannot represent the meter‐scale topographic features. Because of low time and space complexities in lunar images, image segmentation algorithm is especially suitable for recognizing lunar features. We divided the narrow angle camera (NAC) mosaic image into three parts: dark area, bright area, and flat area, based on a double‐threshold Otsu method. The first two parts corresponded to the undulating areas (positive and negative terrains). And then we calculated the flat area percentage (Fap) of the previous successful lunar landing missions (including Chang'e‐3, Apollo, Surveyor, and Luna series) and obtained the Fap threshold (>0.6) for lunar safe landing. According to Fap map (~1.5 m per pixel) of CE‐4 preselected landing area, the divided square grids with a size of 0.01° can be classified into safe grids (Fap > 0.6) and unsafe grids (Fap ≤ 0.6). The CE‐4 preselected landing areas can be greatly reduced to five potential landing areas. In the last, we proposed a route planning method, which took both the distance and security into account, for CE‐4 rover to dynamically generate a safe and short route between current grid and target grid. Plain Language Summary: China's Chang'e‐4 (CE‐4) probe will land on the South Pole‐Aitken basin at the end of 2018. Its preselected landing area (45–46°S, 176.4–178.8°E) is located on the southeastern floor of the Von Kármán crater. It is a very large area, and there are many small (meter‐scale) topographic features such as rocks, craters, ridges, and troughs. Therefore, it is necessary to narrow the scope and choose the safe landing areas from the preselected landing area. The flat area percentage (Fap) is an important factor to measure the safety of landing area. Based on an image segmentation method, we extracted Faps in square grids with a size of 0.01°and then the CE‐4 landing areas were reduced to five safe areas. After CE‐4 lands at the safe site, a rover will be released to travel around. We proposed a path planning method for CE‐4 rover moving from current grid to target grid. This method took both the distance and security into account to find out the best path with safety and short distance. Abstract: The experience of constructing a geoinformational system (GIS) of the Svetlyi Yar irrigation system (Volgograd oblast) for monitoring the status of irrigated lands is considered. The GIS was based on comprehensive information that included remote sensing materials. Analyzing and processing these materials showed that the economic pattern in the area had changed in recent years, the area of irrigated land had decreased significantly, and the irrigation volume had decreased, bringing about a drop in the groundwater level. The structure of crops had also changed, and irrigated soils had entered the desalinization and calcareous invasion stage after the salinization stage of the 1990s. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Significant advances in spaceborne imaging payloads have resulted in new big data problems in the Earth Observation (EO) field. These challenges are compounded onboard satellites due to a lack of equivalent advancement in onboard data processing and downlink technologies. We have previously proposed a new GPU accelerated onboard data processing architecture and developed parallelised image processing software to demonstrate the achievable data processing throughput and compression performance. However, the environmental characteristics are distinctly different to those on Earth, such as available power and the probability of adverse single event radiation effects. In this paper, we analyse new performance results for a low power embedded GPU platform, investigate the error resilience of our GPU image processing application and offer two new error resilient versions of the application. We utilise software based error injection testing to evaluate data corruption and functional interrupts. These results inform the new error resilient methods that also leverages GPU characteristics to minimise time and memory overheads. The key results show that our targeted redundancy techniques reduce the data corruption from a probability of up to 46 percent to now less than 2 percent for all test cases, with a typical execution time overhead of 130 percent. Volcanic ash clouds can present an aviation hazard over distances of thousands of kilometres and, to help to mitigate this hazard, advanced numerical models are used to forecast ash dispersion in the atmosphere. However, forecast accuracy is usually limited by uncertainties in initial conditions such as the eruption rate and the vertical distribution of ash injected above the volcano. Here, we demonstrate the potential of the Telematics Earth Observation Mission (TOM) picosatellite formation, due for launch in 2020, to provide valuable information for constraining ash cloud dispersion models through simultaneous image acquisition from three satellites. TOM will carry commercial frame cameras. Using photogrammetric simulations, we show that such data should enable ash cloud heights to be determined with a precision (~30–140 m depending on configuration) comparable to the vertical resolution of lidar observations (30–180 m depending on the cloud height). To support these estimates, we processed photographs taken from the International Space Station of the 2009 Sarychev Peak eruption, as a proxy for TOM imagery. Structure-from-motion photogrammetric software successfully reconstructed the 3-D form of the ascending ash cloud, as well as surrounding cloud layers. Direct estimates of the precision of the ash cloud height measurements, as well as comparisons between independently processed image sets, indicate that a vertical measurement precision of ~200 m was achieved. Image sets acquired at different times captured the plume dynamics and enabled a mean ascent velocity of 14 m s −1 to be estimated for regions above 7 km. In contrast, the uppermost regions of the column (at a measured cloud top height of ~11 km) were not ascending significantly, enabling us to constrain a 1-D plume ascent model, from which estimates for the vent size (50 m) and eruption mass flux (2.6 × 10 6  kg s −1 ) could be made. Thus, we demonstrate that nanosatellite imagery has the potential for substantially reducing uncertainties in ash dispersion models by providing valuable information on eruptive conditions. Recently, the performance of high-resolution spaceborne synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data for urban landscape monitoring has attracted increased interest, in particular for regions where rainy weather prevails throughout of year. In this study, the phase component of SAR data was exploited for landscape monitoring in the western area of Nanjing city, China. Twenty-six scenes of TerraSAR-X single-look complex (SLC) interferometric images were acquired for the period of May 2013 to February 2015 and applied for urban change detection as well as surface subsidence monitoring by means of interferometric SAR (InSAR) technologies. Firstly, a small baseline strategy in conjunction with a fast statistically homogeneous pixel selection (FaSHPS) approach were applied for the coherence imagery generation and for the coherent change detection, resulting in a correct probability of better than 90%. Second, the surface deformation was derived with millimetre accuracy using an enhanced multi-temporal InSAR (MT-InSAR) tool by synergistically analyzing the amplitudes and phases of the SAR acquisitions. This study indicates that high-resolution SAR data have the potential for urban landscape monitoring by taking advantage of the interferometric performance and the all-day and all-weather imaging capability. For remote-sensing applications such as spectra classification or identification, atmospheric correction constitutes a very important pre-processing step, especially in complex urban environments where a lot of phenomenons alter the shape of the signal. The objective of this article is to compare the efficiency of two atmospheric correction algorithms, COCHISE (atmospheric COrrection Code for Hyperspectral Images of remote-sensing SEnsors) and an empirical method, on hyperspectral data and for classification applications. Classification is carried out on several simulated spaceborne data sets with different spatial resolutions (from 1.6 to 9.6 m). Four classifiers are considered in the study: ak-means, a Support Vector Machine (SVM), and a sun/shadow version of each of them, which processes sunlit and shadowed pixels separately. Results show that the most relevant atmospheric method for classification depends on the spatial resolution of the processed data set. Indeed, if the empirical method performs better on high-resolution data sets (up to 4%), its superiority fades out as the spatial resolution decreases, especially with the lower spatial resolution where COCHISE can be 10% more accurate than the empirical method. Laser-induced fluorescence and high-speed photography were employed to investigate the kerosene flame stabilization mechanism in a cavity-based scramjet combustor with an inlet condition corresponds to flight Mach number of 4. Pilot hydrogen was used to ignite the kerosene fuel. The PLIF results of kerosene distribution in the reacting cases showed that the mixing process was dramatically enhanced compared to the non-reacting cases. Sharp OH gradients were observed in the shear layer and the aft region of cavity, which indicated that the flame was located at these positions. A portion of hot products participated in the recirculation of the cavity and preheated the kerosene-air mixture in the leading edge. The heated mixture was ignited in the mid-cavity and the reaction zone spread into the mainstream flow. Due to the competition between the local flame speed and the local flow speed, the high-speed images showed that the spreading location was in fluctuation. Diffraction gratings are among the most commonly used optical elements in applications ranging from spectroscopy and metrology to lasers. Numerous methods have been adopted for the fabrication of gratings, including microelectromechanical system (MEMS) fabrication which is by now mature and presents opportunities for tunable gratings through inclusion of an actuation mechanism. We have designed, modeled, fabricated and tested a silicon based pitch tunable diffraction grating (PTG) with relatively large resolving power that could be deployed in a spaceborne imaging spectrometer, for example in a picosatellite. We have carried out a detailed analytical modeling of PTG, based on a mass spring system. The device has an effective fill factor of 52% and resolving power of 84. Tuning provided by electrostatic actuation results in a displacement of 2.7μm at 40V. We present our method to calculate the meteor limiting magnitude. The limiting meteor magnitude defines the faintest magnitude at which all meteors are still detected by a given system. An accurate measurement of the limiting magnitude is important in order to calculate the meteoroid flux from a meteor shower or sporadic source. Since meteor brightness is linked to meteor mass, the limiting magnitude is needed to calculate the limiting mass of the meteor flux measurement. The mass distribution of meteoroids is thought to follow a power law, thus being slightly off in the limiting magnitude can have a significant effect on the measured flux. Sky conditions can change on fairly short timescales; therefore one must monitor the meteor limiting magnitude at regular intervals throughout the night, rather than just measuring it once. We use the stellar limiting magnitude as a proxy of the meteor limiting magnitude. Our method for determining the stellar limiting magnitude and how we transform it into the meteor limiting magnitude is presented. Meteor ablation features in the spectral lines occurring at 394, 436, 520, and 589 nm were observed using a four-camera spectral system between September and December 2015. In conjunction with this multi-camera system the Canadian Automated Meteor Observatory was used to observe the orbital parameters and fragmentation of these meteors. In total, 95 light curves with complete data in the 520 and 589 nm filters were analyzed; some also had partial or complete data in the 394 nm filter, but no usable data was collected with the 436 nm filter. Of the 95 events, 70 exhibited some degree of differential ablation, and in all except 3 of these 70 events the 589 nm filter started or ended sooner compared with the 520 nm filter, indicating early ablation at the 589 nm wavelength. In the majority of cases the meteor showed evidence of fragmentation regardless of the type of ablation (differential or uniform). A surprising result was the lack of correlation found concerning the K B parameter, linked to meteoroid strength, and differential ablation. In addition, 22 shower-associated meteors were observed; Geminids showed mainly slight differential ablation, while Taurids were more likely to ablate uniformly. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

An attempt is made to model a meteor observed with the Canadian Automated Meteor Observatory tracking system using a single body model. This meteor showed only very faint wake, implying that fragmentation was not important. Previous attempts to model the meteor with models of fragmenting meteors had overpredicted the amount of wake seen. A single-body, non-homogeneous ablation code was developed, but proved unsuccessful at matching the observed light curve of the meteor, even after a thorough search of parameter space. A model of a meteoroid fragmenting in many small bursts of small fragments was developed in an attempt to match both the light curve and the observed wake, and it succeeded in producing a qualitative fit to the light curve and to the high-resolution wake. The structure of the Orionids and the Eta Aquariids meteor streams was studied using the IAU MDC Photographic Orbits Database. Both the streams are associated with one of the most active comet known in the cometary population – 1 P/Halley. The stream is therefore constantly supplemented by new particles, what creates conditions for a formation of a complex internal structure. We found that two frequency maxima of the photographic Orionids identified at the solar longitudes λ ⊙ =208.5° and λ ⊙ =210.5° coincide with the positions of the maximum activity of the visual meteors and bolides. One of five identified associations (O1) probably does not belong to the Orionids, i.e. meteor stream 008 ORI, but regards the September omicron Orionids - 479 SOO. The orbital parameters of the filament O4 correspond to the mean orbit of the Orionids resulting from the meteor radar observations in the period 2002–2012. There is no spatial relation between meteors observed in May (031 ETA) and October (008 ORI). While Eta Aquariids are in fact the core of the stream, the orbits of Orionids are much further from the cometary orbit. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper presents a methodology to design a spaceborne dual-beam along-track synthetic aperture radar interferometer to retrieve ocean surface velocity vectors. All related aspects and necessary tradeoffs are identified and discussed or reviewed, respectively. This includes a review of the measurement principle and the relation between baseline and sensitivity, the relation between wind and radar backscatter, a discussion of the observation geometry, including the antenna concept, polarization diversity, and all main error contributions. The design methodology consists of a sensitivity-based derivation of explicit instrument requirements from scientific requirements. In turn, this derivation is based on a statistical model for the interferometric phase error. This allows a quantitative, well-grounded instrument design offering an additional degree of freedom to the approach, which we call “noise-equivalent-sigma-zero requirement space.” Crucial tradeoffs for the system design, such as the resolution, the number of independent looks, the minimum wind speed, and the coherence and ambiguities, are pointed out and discussed. Finally, this paper concludes with a single platform system concept operating in Ku-band, which provides the measurement quality needed to achieve a surface velocity estimation accuracy of 5 cm/s, 200-km swath coverage, for 4 $\times$ 4 km2 L2-product resolution and winds starting at 3 m/s. Compared with fixed focus cameras, zoom cameras can be used to provide more precise measurements in space tasks. However, the calibration of zoom cameras in this case is a difficulty, as it is not convenient to set up a calibration device on the spacecraft. To solve this problem, the authors present a real-time zoom camera calibration algorithm based on fixed stars. With the star images captured by the zoom camera, they firstly use a star identification method to recognise the identity of stars. By means a series of coordinate transformation, they are able to build the one-to-one mapping between the pixel coordinates and epoch celestial coordinates of the stars. Finally, the internal and external parameters of the zoom camera are obtained based on the thick lens zoom camera model. Simulation and experiment results show that the internal parameters of zoom cameras are rarely affected by the noise of latitude, longitude and time. This exploratory study investigates (i) inter-individual variations of affective states before a parabolic flight (i.e., PF) on the basis of quality of adaptation to physical demands, and (ii) intra-individual variations of affective states during a PF. Mood-states, state-anxiety and salivary cortisol were assessed in two groups with a different quality of adaptation (an Adaptive Group, i.e., AG, and a Maladaptive Group, i.e., MG) before and during a PF. Before PF, MG scored higher on mood states (Anger-Hostility, Fatigue-Inertia) than AG. During the flight, while AG seemed to present “normal” affective responses to the demanding environment (e.g., increase in salivary cortisol), MG presented increases in mood states such as Confusion-Bewilderment or Tension-Anxiety. The findings suggest that the psychological states of MG could have disturbed their ability to integrate sensory information from an unusual environment, which led to difficulties in coping with the physical demands of PF. The PATENDER activity (Net parametric characterization and parabolic flight), funded by the European Space Agency (ESA) via its Clean Space initiative, was aiming to validate a simulation tool for designing nets for capturing space debris. This validation has been performed through a set of different experiments under microgravity conditions where a net was launched capturing and wrapping a satellite mock-up. This paper presents the architecture of the thrown-net dynamics simulator together with the set-up of the deployment experiment and its trajectory reconstruction results on a parabolic flight (Novespace A-310, June 2015). The simulator has been implemented within the Blender framework in order to provide a highly configurable tool, able to reproduce different scenarios for Active Debris Removal missions. The experiment has been performed over thirty parabolas offering around 22 s of zero-g conditions. Flexible meshed fabric structure (the net) ejected from a container and propelled by corner masses (the bullets) arranged around its circumference have been launched at different initial velocities and launching angles using a pneumatic-based dedicated mechanism (representing the chaser satellite) against a target mock-up (the target satellite). High-speed motion cameras were recording the experiment allowing 3D reconstruction of the net motion. The net knots have been coloured to allow the images post-process using colour segmentation, stereo matching and iterative closest point (ICP) for knots tracking. The final objective of the activity was the validation of the net deployment and wrapping simulator using images recorded during the parabolic flight. The high-resolution images acquired have been post-processed to determine accurately the initial conditions and generate the reference data (position and velocity of all knots of the net along its deployment and wrapping of the target mock-up) for the simulator validation. The simulator has been properly configured according to the parabolic flight scenario, and executed in order to generate the validation data. With the rapid development of spaceborne synthetic aperture radar (SAR) and the increasing need of ship detection, research on adaptive ship detection in spaceborne SAR imagery is of great importance. Focusing on practical problems of ship detection, this paper presents a highly adaptive ship detection scheme for spaceborne SAR imagery. It is able to process a wide range of sensors, imaging modes and resolutions. Two main stages are identified in this paper, namely: ship candidate detection and ship discrimination. Firstly, this paper proposes an adaptive land masking method using ship size and pixel size. Secondly, taking into account the imaging mode, incidence angle, and polarization channel of SAR imagery, it implements adaptive ship candidate detection in spaceborne SAR imagery by applying different strategies to different resolution SAR images. Finally, aiming at different types of typical false alarms, this paper proposes a comprehensive ship discrimination method in spaceborne SAR imagery based on confidence level and complexity analysis. Experimental results based on RADARSAT-1, RADARSAT-2, TerraSAR-X, RS-1, and RS-3 images demonstrate that the adaptive scheme proposed in this paper is able to detect ship targets in a fast, efficient and robust way. This paper describes a general-purpose parallel scheme for efficiently focusing synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data on multicore-based shared-memory architectures. The rationale of the proposed tiling-based parallel focusing model is first discussed, and then, its implementation structure is illustrated. The adopted parallel solution, which is based on a canonical processing pattern, exploits a segmented-block-based approach and works successfully on data acquired by different spaceborne SAR platforms. Insofar as a significant portion of the focusing algorithm is amenable to tiling, our approach decomposes the problem into simpler subproblems of the same type, also providing a suitable mechanism to explicitly control the granularity of computation through the proper specification of the tiling at the different stages of the algorithm itself. Relevant implementation makes use of multithreading and high-performance libraries. Achievable performances are then experimentally investigated by quantifying the benefit of the parallelism incorporated into the prototype solution, thus demonstrating the validity of our approach. Accordingly, canonical performance metrics have been evaluated, and the pertinent scalability has been examined on different multicore architectures. Furthermore, in order to emphasize the practical ability of the proposed parallel model implementation to efficiently deal with data of different SAR sensors, a performance analysis has been carried out in different realistic scenarios including data acquired by the Envisat/ASAR, RADARSAT-1, and COSMO-SkyMed platforms. The Micro-Imaging Dust Analysis System (MIDAS) atomic force microscope (AFM) onboard the Rosetta orbiter was the first such instrument launched into space in 2004. Designed only a few years after the technique was invented, MIDAS is currently orbiting comet 67P Churyumov–Gerasimenko and producing the highest resolution 3D images of cometary dust ever made in situ . After more than a year of continuous operation much experience has been gained with this novel instrument. Coupled with operations of the Flight Spare and advances in terrestrial AFM a set of “lessons learned” has been produced, cumulating in recommendations for future spaceborne atomic force microscopes. The majority of the design could be reused as-is, or with incremental upgrades to include more modern components (e.g. the processor). Key additional recommendations are to incorporate an optical microscope to aid the search for particles and image registration, to include a variety of cantilevers (with different spring constants) and a variety of tip geometries. Detailed land cover information is valuable for mapping complex urban environments. Recent enhancements to satellite sensor technology promise fit-for-purpose data, particularly when processed using contemporary classification approaches. We evaluate this promise by comparing the influence of spatial resolution, spectral band set and classification approach for mapping detailed urban land cover in Nottingham, UK. A WorldView-2 image provides the basis for a set of 12 images with varying spatial and spectral characteristics, and these are classified using three different approaches (maximum likelihood (ML), support vector machine (SVM) and object-based image analysis (OBIA)) to yield 36 output land cover maps. Classification accuracy is evaluated independently and McNemar tests are conducted between all paired outputs (630 pairs in total) to determine which classifications are significantly different. Overall accuracy varied between 35% for ML classification of 30 m spatial resolution, 4-band imagery and 91% for OBIA classification of 2 m spatial resolution, 8-band imagery. The results demonstrate that spatial resolution is clearly the most influential factor when mapping complex urban environments, and modern "very high resolution" or VHR sensors offer great advantage here. However, the advanced spectral capabilities provided by some recent sensors, coupled with contemporary classification approaches (especially SVMs and OBIA), can also lead to significant gains in mapping accuracy. The measurement and monitoring of critical infrastructure elements by remote sensing has become necessary for economical and security reasons. Information provided by remote sensing for infrastructure monitoring is extracted with specific signal processing chains that have to be adapted to the geometric particularities of the structure. In this paper we present in detail the first monitoring results obtained by combining spaceborne synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data with externally measured point clouds describing an infrastructure element. The processing core is essentially based on refocusing each available SAR image on the provided point cloud and identifying the scatterers that can be monitored by means of four dimensional tomography. The key points and limitations which appear in the measurement and data processing are illustrated on two test sites in France: the Puylaurent water-dam and the Chastel landslide. The SAR products used are high-resolution sliding spotlight SAR images acquired in the TerraSAR-X and TanDEM-X missions, whereas the point clouds of the structures were generated using GPS localization, topographic measurements and laser scans. The estimated deformations of the scatterers using the SAR images were in good agreement with available in-situ data provided through regular topographic surveys and embedded measuring systems. Since the SEASAT mission in 1978, satellite-based synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images have been used to study oceanic internal waves. Internal waves become visible in SAR images because their orbital currents modulate the surface roughness. While this leads to an accurate spatial representation of internal wave patterns, the complexity of the imaging mechanism makes it difficult to derive actual currents and internal wave amplitudes from SAR signatures. We demonstrate in this paper how a more robust parameter retrieval is possible with along-track interferometric SAR (InSAR) data that resolve amplitudes and temporal phase changes of the backscattered signal together, the latter of which are directly related to the scatterers' line-of-sight velocities. Our example data set, which was acquired by TerraSAR-X in Dual Receive Antenna mode at Dongsha (South China Sea), exhibits strong signatures of internal waves in the interferogram amplitude and phase. We use a simple internal soliton parameterization and a numerical radar imaging model to find a plausible combination of internal wave parameters, which leads to good agreement between simulated and observed signatures. Testing the sensitivity of radar amplitude and phase signatures to various parameters, we show that along-track InSAR data should generally permit more accurate and less ambiguous internal wave parameter retrievals than conventional SAR images.
