The effects of the electrical parameters, including storage capacitance, additional inductance, charging voltage, and electrode gap, on the shock wave induced by spark discharge in gas were experimentally investigated. The results showed that the shock waves induced by spark discharge conform to the attenuation law for weak spherical shock waves outside the spark core. The shock wave amplitude is approximately proportional to the electrode gap and storage energy and decreases with increasing inductance. The effect of the charging voltage on the shock wave amplitude can be almost ignored if the storage energy is the same. The average power in the first quarter cycle of spark discharge was found to be closely related to the shock wave amplitude. An empirical equation was given between the shock wave amplitude and the average discharge power, which provides convenient access to set appropriate electrical parameters to generate shock waves of specified amplitude induced by spark discharge. Optical Wireless Communications (OWCs) are capable of handling large data rates in the Internet of Underwater Things (IoUT) at low latency to be suitable for real-time image and video applications. This paper presents communication link feasibility via link budget to determine the link communication range for three types of line-of-sight link configurations: point-to-point, diffused, and modulating retro-reflector link. The main aim of this paper is to present a more realistic power link budget which is developed to take into account the following: LED Photo Source Lambertian radiation model, Beer-Lambert pass loss model that includes absorption and scattering effects of water types, Spherical wave propagation model, photodetector which is modeled by active area model, transmitter projection optics (PO) gain and receiver collection optics (CO) gain. Moreover, this paper considers the effects of aquatic channels 'scattering and absorption by using intensity modulation direct detection IM-DD OOK, LED and LD–PS based transmitter, and SiPM-PD based receiver. The impact of different underwater environments, transmitter, and receiver parameters will be investigated on the communication link range. Its communication range on the order of tens of meters could be achieved by the three-link configurations. It is concluded from the analysis; that the line-of-sight point-to-point provides more communication range than a diffused line of sight. A diffused line of sight is used when it is required to multicast from a node to several nodes. Modulating retro-reflector provides moderate communication range and it is used when one party has more resources than the other one on the communication link. Medium distances are achieved by up to a hundred meters by placing multiple relay nodes between the source node and the destination node. The communication range is increased as increasing the active physical area of the photodetector and the transmitted power of the photo source. The communication range in both clear sea water and clear ocean water is higher than turbid water which is less since optical water suffers from higher attenuation. In this study, we propose a new method for single-shot, high-resolution lensless imaging called double-slit holography. This technique combines the properties of in-line and off-axis holography in one single-shot measurement using the simplest double-slit device: a plate with two apertures. In double-slit holography, a plane wave illuminates the two apertures giving rise to two spherical waves. While diffraction of one spherical wave from a sample positioned behind the first aperture (the object aperture) provides the object wave, the other spherical wave diffracted from the second (reference) aperture provides the reference wave. The resulting interference pattern in the far-field (hologram) combines the properties of an in-line (or Gabor-type) hologram and an off-axis hologram due to the added reference wave from the second aperture. Both the object and reference waves have the same intensity, which ensures high contrast of the hologram. Due to the off-axis scheme, the amplitude and phase distributions of the sample can be directly reconstructed from the hologram, and the twin image can be easily separated. Due to the object wave being the same as in-line holography with a spherical wave, imaging at different magnifications is similarly done by simply adjusting the aperture-to-sample distance. The resolution of the reconstructed object is given by the numerical aperture of the optical setup and the diameter of the reference aperture. It is shown both by theory and simulations that the resolution of the reconstructed object depends on the diameter of the reference wave aperture but does not depend on the diameter of the object aperture. Light optical proof-of-concept experiments are provided. The proposed method can be particularly practical for X-rays, where optical elements such as beam splitters are not available and conventional off-axis holography schemes cannot be realised. In this paper, a transmissive reconfigurable polarization converter (RPC) based on an active metasurface is proposed, which can regulate the ideal plane wave and the spherical wave as a cladding of the horn antenna. The metasurface unit is composed of a single-layer F4B dielectric substrate and two double-cross metal strips with a p–i–n diode on the top and seven vertical metal strips on the bottom. One RPC prototype with 15 × 15 units has been fabricated and measured when it regulates an ideal plane wave. By controlling the states of diodes, the RPC can realize the linear-to-circular polarization conversion (LCPC) or the linear polarization maintaining (LPM) function from 2.5 to 3.64 GHz. Furthermore, the RPC is used as the cladding of a horn antenna for high integration in practical applications. The measured results show that this RPC-antenna system can still achieve LCPC or LPM function from 3.1 to 4.5 GHz. It is worth mentioning that the 3 dB axial ratio beam width of RPC can cover from −65° to 65° in LCPC. Using similarity methods with general physical assumptions and sufficient mathematical relations, researchers can obtain approximate solutions ready for experimental confirmation. Singh et al. claimed to have analyzed the second-kind self-similar motion of converging cylindrical shock waves in magnetogasdynamics. However, we found the dominated equation (11) and relevant equations of Singh et al. [Chin. Phys. Lett. 28(9) (2011) 094701] as well as the dominated equation (12) and relevant equations of Singh et al. [AIAA J. 48(11) (2010) 2523] being not correct. We show the correct mathematical derivations in details. It seems to us corresponding equations as well as illustrations by Singh et al. are of doubt due to above-mentioned issues. Detection of sound pressure level is an important factor for individuals working in noisy environments. When noise occurs in large quantities, it threatens the health and working safety of individuals working in that environment. Since it is necessary to determine periodic pressure changes to measure sound intensity, many mathematical analyzes and experimental studies have been carried out on this subject. Logarithmic equations are used in the intensity measurements of the sound and in the distribution, reduction and exposure analyzes of the sound depending on the distance. In this study, Galerkin Weighted Residues Method (WRM) and Spherical Harmonic Functions, which have been used frequently in sound problems in recent years, are used for the solution of sound wave equations in spherical coordinates, which have not been observed in the literature before, in determining the periodic pressure values of sound. Based on the directivity coefficient and spherical harmonic functions in detecting sound pressure levels in the near field, The Critical Distance Threshold, r_cri, was defined and combined with data from WRM. In this way, it was determined that the numerical sound pressure values obtained were very close to the values used in the classical logarithmic approach, and as a result of the logarithmic consistency analysis made for these numerical data. Transient high-frequency spherical wave propagation in the porous medium is studied using the Biot-JKD theory. The porous media is considered to be a composed of deformable solid skeleton and viscous incompressible fluid inside the pores. In order to treat the fractional proportionality of the dynamic tortuosity to the frequency (or equivalently, to time) due to the viscous interaction between solid and fluid phases, the fractional calculus theory along with the Laplace and Fourier transforms are used to solve the coupled governing partial differential equations of the scaler and vector potential functions obtained from the Helmholtz's decomposition in the Laplace domain. Both the longitudinal and transverse waves, additionally the reflection and transmission kernels are determined in detail at the Laplace domain. For the Laplace-to-time inversion transform, Durbin's numerical formula is used and the independence of the results from the involved tuning and accuracy parameters is checked. The effects of the porosity, dynamic tortuosity, characteristics length, etc. on the reflected pressure and stress are investigated. The general pattern of the results is similar to our previous knowledge of wave propagation. Further works and experiments may be conducted in future works for various applications. The propagation of spherical shock waves through metallic mediums have been considered in this paper. The effect of overtaking disturbances in the propagation of spherical shock waves through solids, especially metals such as Aluminium and Copper, has been analysed by employing Chisnell-Chester-Whitham method. Under the influence of spherical shock waves flow variables have been obtained analytically as well as estimated numerically. Expressions for the pressure and the particle velocity behind the shock wave have also been obtained. It is found that shock strength in both the metals decreases as shock propagates through them. Shock velocity and modified shock velocity depict a decreasing pattern with increasing propagation distance. These observations suggest many industrial and medical applications of shock waves. Blast wave reflection is a critical area in military and infrastructure defense, converging shock dynamics, and colliding blast waves. While irregular blast reflections have garnered remarkable attention, research on regularly reflected (RR) blast waves remains comparatively limited. This study presents a detailed literature on shortcomings of post-reflection quantities of RR blast waves and aims to bridge this gap by extensively analyzing RR behaviors of spherical blast waves against a planar surface in air via numerical methods. With 31 scenarios involving a 1 kg charge and scaled distances from 0.5 to 4.0 m/kg1/3, comprehensive field data on parameters including pressure, density, and velocity were gathered using a fan-like gauge array. A dedicated program for tracking the RR shock front was developed, enabling precise trajectory detection and detailed quantitative analyses of RR wave decay. First, accurate empirical trajectory equations for RR waves were formulated along its normal axis. Second, spatial decay analysis was conducted, revealing consistent decay rates for each RR field parameter under 1 m/kg1/3 and diminishing decay rates beyond this threshold. Third, parameter profiles preceding RR shock fronts at various post-reflection distances were examined, while discrepancies and complexities against generalized profiles were uncovered. Qualitatively, this study identified four internal interactions within the reflection phenomenon, categorized by scaled distance ranges, and elucidated the secondary wave's impact on RR wave propagation. The comprehensive quantitative and qualitative findings in this work offer profound insights into blast wave dynamics, addressing several gaps on RR blast wave behaviors and laying a foundation for understanding more complex blast reflection phenomena crucial in various domains. The propagation of shock waves in different geometries is crucial in engineering and scientific applications. A comprehensive model is developed to elucidate the hydrodynamic growth and decay of shock waves in cylindrical and spherical geometries by using the strong shock wave assumption. This model takes into consideration the conservation equations governing mass, momentum, and energy, thereby allowing for an accurate description of the coupled behavior between the piston and shock wave propagation. In contrast to the localized analysis employed in previous self-similar methods, this model incorporates the finite sound wave velocity to introduce the concept of retarded pressure on the piston surface. Consequently, the proposed model offers a multitude of advantages by providing a complete set of dynamic information concerning the trajectories, velocities, and accelerations of both the piston and shock wave. Furthermore, an asymptotic analytical solution is derived to describe the decay of shock waves in cylindrical and spherical geometries. To validate the theoretical analysis and illustrate the propagation characteristics of shock waves in these specific geometries, thorough comparisons are conducted. The scattering of perfect electromagnetic conductor (PEMC) sphere illuminated by a Hermite–Gaussian (HG) beam is studied. The PEMC is regarded as a generalization of both the perfect electric conductor and the perfect magnetic conductor. By utilizing vector potential, the incident and scattered electromagnetic fields for HG beams are expressed in the context of spherical vector wave functions. By implementing the boundary condition on PEMC sphere, the scattering coefficients of the HG beam in terms of beam expansion coefficients are derived. The numerical results in the context of normalized differential scattering cross section (DSCS) and polarization of the HG beam are computed. The influence of the HG beam configuration parameters i.e., (mode indices, beam waist radius, center coordinates) and PEMC electromagnetic admittance are explored. As the beam modes varies, the normalized DSCS was influenced owing to internal spatial degrees of freedom of the HG beam for non-zero beam modes. Polarizability is also very sensitive to the admittance of the PEMC sphere. So, admittance parameter regulates the polarization of the HG beam. The application of standing surface acoustic wave (SSAW) tweezers based on backpropagation superposition to achieve precise behavior manipulation of microscale cells and even nanoscale bacteria has been widely studied and industrialized. However, the structure requires multiple transducer components or full channel resonance. It is very challenging to design a simple structure for nano-control by complex acoustic field. In this study, a reflector-interdigital transducer (R-IDT) acoustofluidic device based on unilateral coherence enhancement is proposed to achieve SSAW definition features of periodic particle capture positions. The SAW device based on a unilateral transducer can not only generate leaky-SAW in water-filled microchannel, but also have a contribution of spherical waves in the vibration area of the substrate-liquid interface due to the Huygens-Fresnel diffractive principle. Both of them form a robust time-averaged spatial periodicity in the pressure potential gradient, accurately predicting the lateral spacing of these positions through acoustic patterning methods. Furthermore, a reflector based on Bragg-reflection is used to suppress backward transmitted SAW and enhance forward conducted SAW beams. By using a finite element model, R-IDT structure's amplitude enhances 60.78% compared to single IDT structure. The particle manipulation range of the diffractive acoustic field greatly improves, verified by experimental polystyrene microspheres. Besides, biocompatibility is conformed through red blood cells and Bacillus subtilis. We investigate the overall shift of periodic pressure field that can still occur when the phase changes. Interfacial instability would be aroused on a spherical liquid droplet when it is subject to external vertical vibration. In this paper, a linear analysis was conducted on this instability problem. The polar-angle dependent acceleration in the spherical coordinate is strongly coupled with the temporal and spatial component of the surface deformation displacement, which gives a recursion equation that implicitly expresses the dispersion relation between the growth rate and the spherical mode numbers. The unstable regions (or unstable tongues) for the inviscid fluids considering the latitudinal mode (longitudinal mode number m = 0) were derived and presented in the parameter space. Compared to the solution of the spherical Faraday instability under radial vibration acceleration, the regions of harmonic unstable tongues for the mono-directional vibration cases become much narrower, and the subharmonic unstable tongues almost approach straight lines. The analysis shows that the latitudinal waves emerging on the spherical droplet surface ought to oscillate harmonically instead of subharmonically, which is opposite to the results for the case under radial vibration acceleration. A corresponding experiment of a liquid droplet lying on a vertically vibrating plate was conducted, and the observations substantiate our theoretical predictions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In the framework of the work the description of sphere wave filed in the far observation region is discussed. The consideration is based on the decomposition of the wave field over the longitudinal and transverse spatial parameters of the problem in the direction of observation. It is shown that the approximation of a sphere wave by the flat field is correct only if the consideration is conducted in the limit of solid angle. The magnitude of the solid angle, which includes the area of flatness of the spherical wave, is determined using the so-called wave parameters corresponding to the observation area and the illuminated point. The wave field created by a small flat area is defined as a limit case of a superposition field generated by a system of point sources. It is shown that in an observation point the wave field of a small flat area can be characterized by the angle between the area normal and the vector indicting from the given area the observation point. The problem of description of a wave filed in the framework of a small flat aria is also discussed. Indirect far field (IFF) over‐the‐air (OTA) test could be one of the most applicable test methods for 5G mmWave devices. The compact antenna test range (CATR) method has been introduced to the OTA test by 3GPP. Conventional metallic parabolic reflectors without edge treatment can lead to serious edge diffraction which results in high noise and low accuracy. The serrated reflector improves edge diffraction but performs poorly at low frequencies. Reflector antenna with a resistance frequency selection surface (RFSS) frame is proposed for 5G OTA CATR measurement at millimeter frequency, which collimates spherical incident waves into quasi‐plane waves in a relatively short distance, thus forming a quiet zone (QZ) in which large devices under test can be measured in small chamber. In this paper, the reflector with RFSS is investigated through the numerical and experimental methods, it is found that serrated RFSS frame with low edge diffraction could achieve the excellent QZ, which could be helpful in miniaturing CATR chambers for 5G OTA measurement. The European Space Agency's Aeolus mission, launched in August 2018, provides the first global horizontal line‐of‐sight wind profile measurements. Previous studies have shown that Aeolus winds in global forecast systems improve the overall forecast skill, especially in the upper tropospheric tropics and in other data‐sparse regions. In this study, we use a series of observing system experiments with the latest version of the reprocessed Aeolus wind product (2B11) to better characterize the locations and drivers of improved skill from Aeolus with Environment and Climate Change Canada's Global Deterministic Prediction System. Observing system experiments that test the impact of Aeolus winds and the impact of all operational wind observations are carried out, covering the period summer 2019 and winter 2019–2020. Assimilation of operational winds improves the tropospheric wind forecast over the Tropics by a reduction of 8% in the forecast error, and adding the Aeolus winds to the assimilations results in an extra 0.7–0.9%. Aeolus wind impacts are improvements are 0.7–0.9% for the Arctic, and 0.4–0.6% over the Northern and Southern Hemisphere extratropics. The scale dependence of these impacts is investigated using spatial spectra (spherical harmonic decomposition). The improvement is quantified using the difference of the 250 hPa kinetic energy forecast error spectra between experiments. The operational winds largely improve the forecast of planetary scale to intermediate scale for spherical wave numbers between 1 and 20 in the short‐range forecasts. The operational wind impact decreases as the forecast lead time increases. On the other hand, the impact of Aeolus is mostly seen in the intermediate to large scale range with a peak around spherical wave number 8. The Aeolus‐related improvement around this wave number increases with forecast lead time. This analysis suggests that Aeolus winds provide estimates of the wind state that are valuable and complementary to that provided from current operational winds. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The gas‐insulated switchgear (GIS) is a vital component of a power system, and understanding the shock wave characteristics of its internal discharge is crucial to ensure the safe and stable operation of the entire system. In this study, a high‐speed shadowing technique is employed to obtain the shadowgraphs of a typical flow‐field evolution of sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) gas following the breakdown of a pin–plate gap inside a GIS. Experimental data were used to derive parameters, including the Mach number, propagation speed, distance of the discharge shock wave, and the temperature, pressure, density, and velocity of the SF6 gas after wave generation. With a 0.2‐mm discharge gap and 0.4‐MPa pressure, the discharge generates a spherical shock wave, centred at the contact between the discharge channel and electrodes, that propagates in all directions. The shock wave gradually weakens after 20 μs, propagating at near‐sonic speed, and its Mach number decreases from 2.92 to 1.15; similarly, its post‐wave parameters sharply decrease during the first 20 μs. Additionally, a significant reflection occurs when the shock wave propagates to the metal wall. This article presents a mathematical model for characterizing the dynamic behavior of spherical shock waves in a self-gravitating, radiating ideal gas with the presence of an azimuthal magnetic field, emphasizing adiabatic conditions. The analysis assumes that the environment just ahead of the shock wave is stationary, and it accounts for variations in density, magnetic field, and fluid velocity within the disturbed medium just behind the shock front. Furthermore, the impact of thermal radiation within the context of an optically thin limit is incorporated into the energy equation of the governing system. Employing the Lie invariance method, the set of partial differential equations governing the flow within this medium is transformed into a system of nonlinear ordinary differential equations through the use of similarity variables. Four distinct cases of similarity solutions are derived by selecting different values for the arbitrary constants associated with the generators. Among these four cases, only two yield similarity solutions, one assuming a power-law shock path and the other an exponential-law shock path. In the case of a power-law shock path, the resulting set of nonlinear ordinary differential equations is numerically solved using the 4 t h -order Runge-Kutta method in MATLAB software. The article thoroughly discusses the influence of various parameters, including γ (adiabatic index of the gas), M a − 2 (Alfvén–Mach number), ϕ (ambient density exponent), and G 0 (gravitational parameter), on the flow properties. Exact solutions of spherically symmetric black hole and gravitational wave are explored in f(R) gravity in arbitrary dimension. We find two exact solutions for the radiation and absorption of null dust. In the framework of general relativity, the Birkhoff theorem strictly forbids the existence of spherical gravitational waves in vacuum space. In this paper. we use lie group of method to study the similarity solution of spherical shock waves in the presence of gravitational field of a variable point mass. In the expressions of the generators of the local Lie group of transformations, we obtain some arbitrary constants which give rise to two cases of possible solutions such as with a power law and exponential shock paths. A particular case of the collapse of an imploding shock is discussed in detail. To obtain the similarity exponents and the flow variables. we performed numerical calculations. A piecewise-homogeneous medium, consisting of anisotropic layers, is excited by a primary spherical sound wave due to a point source lying in the exterior of the medium or in one of its layers. The direct scattering problem is formulated by means of a modified scalar Helmholtz equation incorporating the anisotropic characteristics of the problem. The T-matrix of the problem is determined analytically by means of a suitable coordinate transformation. Then, the acoustic fields in all layers are obtained. The spherical and parabolic wave functions are calculated for the generalized MIC–Kepler system in the continuous spectrum. It is shown that the coefficients of the parabola–sphere and sphere–parabola expansion are expressed in terms of the generalized hypergeometric function . Thin-shell models offer important insights into the complex process of sound-structure interaction but are found to be inconsistent with the rigorous thick-shell theory for fluid-loaded spherical shells. Here, linearized equations of motion of fluid-loaded, thin, spherical shells are re-derived from the first principles. The shell may be prestressed due to the difference in the static pressures in the internal and external fluids. Differences in the fluid-loading terms from previously proposed ad hoc models are identified and their significance is analyzed. Analytic solutions are derived of the problems of spherical sound wave scattering by a fluid-filled, prestressed spherical shell and resonant vibrations of the shell. The results reduce to a number of known exact and asymptotic solutions in appropriate limiting cases. The mathematical model of the shell vibrations is applied to characterize the influence of the shell's material properties and the prestress on passive suppression of low-frequency underwater sound radiation due to diffraction on an acoustically compliant sphere, such as an encapsulated gas bubble. Purpose: The purpose of the present article is to obtain the similarity solution for the shock wave generated by a piston propagating in a self-gravitating nonideal gas under the impact of azimuthal magnetic field for adiabatic and isothermal flows. Design/methodology/approach: The Lie group theoretic method given by Sophus Lie is used to obtain the similarity solution in the present article. Findings: Similarity solution with exponential law shock path is obtained for both ideal and nonideal gas cases. The effects on the flow variables, density ratio at the shock front and shock strength by the variation of the shock Cowling number, adiabatic index of the gas, gravitational parameter and nonidealness parameter are investigated. The shock strength decreases with an increase in the shock Cowling number, nonidealness parameter and adiabatic index, whereas the strength of the shock wave increases with an increase in gravitational parameter. Originality/value: Propagation of shock wave with spherical geometry in a self-gravitating nonideal gas under the impact of azimuthal magnetic field for adiabatic and isothermal flows has not been studied by any author using the Lie group theoretic method. We extend our linear-scaling approach for the calculation of Hartree–Fock exchange energy using localized in situ optimized orbitals [Dziedzic et al., J. Chem. Phys. 139, 214103 (2013)] to leverage massive parallelism. Our approach has been implemented in the onetep (Order-N Electronic Total Energy Package) density functional theory framework, which employs a basis of non-orthogonal generalized Wannier functions (NGWFs) to achieve linear scaling with system size while retaining controllable near-complete-basis-set accuracy. For the calculation of Hartree–Fock exchange, we use a resolution-of-identity approach, where an auxiliary basis set of truncated spherical waves is used to fit products of NGWFs. The fact that the electrostatic potential of spherical waves (SWs) is known analytically, combined with the use of a distance-based cutoff for exchange interactions, leads to a calculation cost that scales linearly with the system size. Our new implementation, which we describe in detail, combines distributed memory parallelism (using the message passing interface) with shared memory parallelism (OpenMP threads) to efficiently utilize numbers of central processing unit cores comparable to, or exceeding, the number of atoms in the system. We show how the use of multiple time-memory trade-offs substantially increases performance, enabling our approach to achieve superlinear strong parallel scaling in many cases and excellent, although sublinear, parallel scaling otherwise. We demonstrate that in scenarios with low available memory, which preclude or limit the use of time-memory trade-offs, the performance degradation of our algorithm is graceful. We show that, crucially, linear scaling with system size is maintained in all cases. We demonstrate the practicability of our approach by performing a set of fully converged production calculations with a hybrid functional on large imogolite nanotubes up to over 1400 atoms. We finish with a brief study of how the employed approximations (exchange cutoff and the quality of the SW basis) affect the calculation walltime and the accuracy of the obtained results. The Markov approximation is widely used in wave propagation in random media. This approximation is valid if the propagation path length is greater than the scale of the medium inhomogeneities affecting a particular statistical moment of a wave field and the moment changes insignificantly over this scale. These conditions might be violated for the variance of the phase fluctuations and other statistical moments of acoustic signals that have propagated through atmospheric turbulence: the scale of the largest eddies can be hundreds of meters, and fluctuations in the acoustic refractive index are relatively strong. In the current article, the phase variance of a spherical sound wave in statistically inhomogeneous turbulence is formulated without the Markov approximation. For propagation ranges smaller than the scale of the largest eddies, the phase variance without the Markov approximation is significantly smaller than when this approximation is employed. As the range increases, the difference between the two results tends toward a constant value (a 'memory' effect), which might be significant in many applications. The phase variance without the Markov approximation agrees better with the experimental data on sound propagation through the atmosphere, while the variance calculated with this approximation significantly overpredicts the data. A system of initially immobile spherical liquid drops placed in another liquid in the field of a propagating acoustic wave is considered. The acoustic radiation force acting on each spherical liquid drop is determined as the function of the incident wave frequency, making use of the solution of a problem of plane harmonic wave scattering on a system of two spherical bodies. The problem is solved by the variable separation method. To satisfy the boundary conditions on spherical surfaces, the expansion of the incident and reflected wave potentials over the spherical wave functions are used. Required constants in the solution are calculated from an infinite system of the algebraic equations, which is solved by a truncation method. It is established that the value of the acoustic radiation force affecting each liquid drop depends significantly on the densities, speed of sound in the outer and internal liquid, as well as on the distance between drops. It is also found that the acoustic radiation force has the same or opposite direction as the incident sound wave depending on its frequency. The dynamic responses of both underground structures and their surrounding geoformations induced by tamped spherical detonation have been recognised as one of the key topics in both defence engineering and civil engineering. Proper understanding and evaluation of tamped detonation-induced particle movement, spherical stress wave propagation/attenuation, and dynamic crack propagation in geoformations require effective experimental methods and numerical tools. To capture the main characteristics of the spherical shock waves, including the wave propagation and attenuation, a systematic tamped spherical detonation test technique on PMMA has been designed in this study. A mini-explosive sphere with a diameter of 4 mm is generated to produce a small-scale explosion within the PMMA specimen. To monitor the movement of particles during explosion, an electronic measurement system consisting of embedded particle velocity sensors and high-intensity magnetic field generators, has been developed. For the modelling of tamped spherical detonation, a modified multibody failure criterion, equation of state (EOS), and Johnson–Holmquist–Beissel (JHB) model have been implemented in a four-dimensional lattice spring model, thus forming an improved JHB-4DLSM model (M-JHB-4DLSM). It is capable of reproducing the effects of large Poisson's ratios, the strain rate and the high ratio of uniaxial compressive strength to the uniaxial tensile strength values (UCS/T). The developed M-JHB-4DLSM model has been validated through modelling the dynamic responses of both granite and PMMA. Results indicate that the dynamic process and fracturing patterns reproduced by M-JHB-4DLSM are consistent with experimental observations. M-JHB-4DLSM model is then applied to investigate the impact effects of tunnels subjected to close-in buried blasting. This study examines the scattering of the orbital angular momentum (OAM) carrying wave by perfect electromagnetic conductor (PEMC) sphere. The incident and scattered electromagnetic fields are expressed using vector spherical wave functions (VSWFs) and unknown field coefficients. A relation between the incident and scattered field coefficients is formulated by implementing the appropriate boundary conditions (BCs) at the surface of the PEMC sphere. Expressions related to the extinction efficiency and scattering asymmetry parameter are derived and computed. The influences of the size parameter of the sphere and the beam waist radius are analyzed. To check the convergence of the proposed work, the numerical results of the scattering efficiency for the vortex electromagnetic (VEM) wave (l = 1) and plane wave (l = 0) for the PEMC sphere are calculated and found to be satisfactory. Near-field acoustic holography (NAH) is an effective tool for realizing accurate sound field reconstruction in three-dimensional space on the prerequisite that appropriate elementary wave functions are selected or constructed to match the characteristics of the sound sources. However, for elongated sources, common wave functions, i.e., plane, cylindrical, or spherical waves, sometimes do not perform well during the sound field projections. To solve this problem, statistically optimized near-field acoustical holography combined with prolate spheroidal wave functions is proposed. In the approach, the sound field is expanded by a series of prolate spheroidal wave functions, whose wavefronts can be set nearly conformal to the elongated sources. Based on these wave functions, fewer expansion terms are required to model the sound field, and the need for regularization can be reduced during the inverse solving process. Therefore, the accuracy of the reconstruction results can be further improved. Numerical simulations are conducted by two types of elongated source models, namely, spatially separated and extended. The results show that the proposed method can effectively reconstruct the sound pressures of elongated sources and perform robustly across a wide frequency range. The sound propagating in a turbulent atmosphere fluctuates in amplitude and phase. This phenomenon, known as acoustic scintillation, is caused by random fluctuations in the acoustic refractive index of the air induced by atmospheric turbulence. Auralization techniques should consider this phenomenon to increase the realism of the synthetic sound. This paper proposes a physics-based formulation to model sequences of log-amplitude and phase fluctuations of a sound propagating in a turbulent atmosphere. This method applies to slanted and vertical propagation of the sound, which is useful for simulating elevated noise sources such as aircraft, drones, and wind turbines. The theoretical framework is based on the spatial correlation functions for the log-amplitude and phase fluctuations for spherical waves, the von Kármán spectrum, and similarity theories to model atmospheric turbulence. A more accurate and efficient millimeter-wave imaging algorithm for a monostatic system is presented in this paper. Firstly, a more precise physical model is implemented, which considers the propagation loss of both the incident wave and scattered wave. However, this physical model cannot be processed using classical mathematical methods such as spherical wave decomposition and Weyl identity. Instead, the method of stationary phase (MSP) is applied to derive the imaging formula. As a result, the proposed algorithm achieves superior imaging results for multiple targets at different ranges. Additionally, the range stacking technique is introduced to avoid time-consuming interpolation, which also contributes to improving computational efficiency comparing to the algorithms employing interpolation. The simulation results show that the proposed algorithm reduces the computation time by half. The Dirac equation in R 1 , 3 with potential Z / r is a relativistic field equation modeling the hydrogen atom. We analyze the singularity structure of the propagator for this equation, showing that the singularities of the Schwartz kernel of the propagator are along an expanding spherical wave away from rays that miss the potential singularity at the origin, but also may include an additional spherical wave of diffracted singularities emanating from the origin. A thermoacoustic sound generation model, based on the classical balance equations of the continuum mechanics, is here developed for the cylindrical and the spherical thermoacoustic wave generation. In both geometries, the model considers an arbitrary multilayered structure, where each layer can be fluid or solid and it is characterized by the fully coupled thermo-visco-acoustic response. It means that the viscous behavior and the thermal conduction are considered in each layer. The model is based on a unified representation of cylindrical or spherical thermoacoustic waves, which is valid for both fluid and solid phases. Thanks to the continuity of temperature, particle velocity, normal stress, and heat flux between adjacent layers, the model can be implemented by means of a versatile matrix approach, allowing flexible analysis and design of cylindrical or spherical thermophones. Any thermoacoustic variable can be determined at any position, any frequency, and for any input power. The results are compared with the models already existing in the literature, and the underlying physics is thoroughly discussed. Distributed array radar achieves high angular resolution and measurement accuracy, which could provide a solution to suppress digital radio frequency memory (DRFM) repeater jamming. However, owing to the large aperture of a distributed radar, the far-field plane wave assumption is no longer satisfied. Consequently, traditional adaptive beamforming methods cannot work effectively due to mismatched steering vectors. To address this issue, a DRFM repeater jamming suppression method based on joint range-angle sparse recovery and beamforming for distributed array radar is proposed in this paper. First, the steering vectors of the distributed array are reconstructed according to the spherical wave model under near-field conditions. Then, a joint range-angle sparse dictionary is generated using reconstructed steering vectors, and the range-angle position of jamming is estimated using the weighted L1-norm singular value decomposition (W-L1-SVD) algorithm. Finally, beamforming with joint range-angle nulling is implemented based on the linear constrained minimum variance (LCMV) algorithm for jamming suppression. Sound propagation through atmospheric turbulence is important in many applications such as localization of low flying aircraft, sonic boom disturbances, and auralization of aircraft during takeoff and landing. This article extends an isotropic turbulence model in the atmospheric boundary layer to account for ground blocking of buoyancy-produced velocity fluctuations. The extended, anisotropic turbulence model is needed to correctly predict the effect of the largest velocity eddies on the statistical characteristics of sound signals. This model and geometrical acoustics are then employed to derive a closed-form expression for the variance of the phase fluctuations of a spherical sound wave for vertical and slanted propagation, without the use of the Markov approximation. A numerical analysis of this expression indicates significant anisotropy of the phase variance due to the buoyancy-produced velocity fluctuations with ground blocking such that it decreases in the vertical direction and increases in the near-horizontal directions. The newly formulated phase variance is compared with data from an outdoor experiment on vertical and slanted sound propagation. Impulsive underwater discharges have been investigated for many decades, yet the complex pre-breakdown processes that underpin their development are not fully understood. Higher pre-breakdown energy losses may lead to significant reduction in the magnitude and intensity of the pressure waves generated by expanding post-breakdown plasma channels. Thus, it is important to characterize these losses for different discharge types and to identify approaches to their reduction. The present paper analyses thermal pre-breakdown processes in the case of free path and wire-guided discharges in water: fast joule heating of a small volume of water at the high-voltage electrode and joule heating and the melting of the wire, respectively. The energy required for joule heating of the water and metallic wire have been obtained from thermal models, analysed and compared with the experimental pre-breakdown energy losses. Pressure impulses generated by free path and by wire-guided underwater discharges have also been investigated. It was shown that wire-guided discharges support the formation of longer plasma channels better than free path underwater discharges for the same energy available per discharge. This results in stronger pressure impulses developed by underwater wire-guided discharges. It has been shown that the pressure magnitude in the case of both discharge types is inversely proportional to the observation distance which is a characteristic of a spherical acoustic wave. Huygens' metasurfaces, as a class of artificial electromagnetic surfaces, have garnered significant interest due to their ability to effectively manipulate electromagnetic wave fronts. In this article, a Huygens' element with a simple design is discussed. The structure comprises a dielectric substrate sandwiched between a reverse-opening resonant ring and a pair of single-opening resonant rings. The proposed structure enables independent modulation of the electrical and magnetic response, particularly delivering transmittance amplitude of at least 0.8 and 0°–360° phase control simultaneously in a single double layer without vias. Based on this structure, we create a Huygens' metasurface focusing lens that gathers plane waves at the focal point. Then, a patch antenna is mounted onto this metalens to transform the radiated spherical waves into plane waves, increasing the antenna gain by up to 11 dBi. The experimental and simulated results demonstrate excellent agreement, demonstrating the usefulness of the proposed metalens and the importance of the designed Huygens-atom for metalens applications. A semi-analytical approach is presented to solve three-dimensional dynamic Green's function for an infinitely extended acoustic field with multiple spheres subjected to the Robin boundary conditions. The multipole expansions of the acoustic field induced by a time-harmonic point source are expanded with spherical wave functions. As an alternative to the complex addition theorem, the multipole expansion is computed in a straightforward way. By taking the finite number of terms, an algebraic system is constructed and is used to obtain Green's function. This result of one sphere agrees with the available analytical solution. For the case of more than one sphere, the proposed results are verified by the numerical method such as the boundary element method (BEM). It indicates that the present solution is more accurate than that of the BEM and shows a fast convergence. Finally, the parameter study is performed to explore the influences of the exciting frequency of the point source, the surface admittance, the number and the separation of spheres on the dynamic Green's functions. The proposed results can be applied to solve the acoustic scattering problems and to increase the application of boundary integral equation method in the way of numerical Green's functions. In this manuscript, we analyzed the scattering of Laguerre–Gaussian (LG) beam by a perfect electromagnetic conductor (PEMC) sphere. The LG beam is famous due to an additional characteristic of orbital angular momentum (OAM). For an incident LG beam, the vector potential A LG p , l is employed to obtain the electromagnetic (EM) fields. LG beam may be described like superposition of Hermite–Gaussian (HG) modes, so the LG beam is expanded in the context of spherical vector wave functions (SVWFs) employing relation between LG and HG beam modes. The unknown scattering coefficients by an LG beam with helical phase profile are calculated using radial and tangential boundary conditions at the surface of PEMC sphere. The effects of the beam modes, beam width, and beam center coordinate position on the differential scattering cross section (DSCS) for a PEMC sphere have been computed. Numerical results explore that when the number of beam modes increase, the DSCS increases due to internal spatial degrees of freedom of the LG beam for nonzero p or l . The influence of heat conductivity and viscosity is taken into account; the results of G. Kirchhoff's classical work on sound propagation in a viscous and heat-conducting medium are used. This paper proposes a method to add an additional phase compensation to conventional phased arrays to achieve flat-topped beam forming, which can convert the spherical waves emitted by common conical horn antennas into cylindrical flat-topped beams, at the same time, there is also a certain power enhancement. A centrosymmetric unit composed of four layers of F4B and metal patches is designed. By changing the value of the parameters, a 360? phase change can be achieved, and it has the advantages of small size and low-profile. To validate the design concept, a prototype of the transmitarray (TA) was designed, fabricated, and measured by calculating the phase distribution of the front. The measurement results show that the designed TA can achieve flat-topped beams at 5.2GHz, the maximum gain is 1.15dB higher than that of the horn antenna, and the flat-topped range is about ±10?. This paper is written to commemorate the 10th anniversary of academician Ye Duzheng (Yeh T.C.) pass away and his great contributions to the development of atmospheric dynamics. Under the inspiration and guidance of the theory of Rossby wave energy dispersion, remarkable progresses have been made in research on planetary wave dynamics and teleconnections of atmospheric circulation anomalies. This paper aims to make a brief review of the studies on the propagating characteristics of quasi-stationary planetary waves in a three-dimensional spherical atmosphere and the dynamic processes of the interannual and interdecadal variabilities of the East Asian summer and winter monsoon systems. Especially, this paper systematically reviews the progresses of the studies on the impacts of the interannual and interdecadal variabilities of the East Asia/Pacific (EAP) pattern teleconnection wave train propagating along the meridional direction over East Asia and the "Silk Road" pattern teleconnection wave train propagating along the zonal direction within the subtropical jet from West Asia to East Asia on the East Asian summer monsoon system and the summer precipitation variability in China, under the guidance of the theory of Rossby wave energy dispersion. Moreover, this paper reviews the dynamic processes of the impact of the interannual and interdecadal oscillations of the propagating waveguides of boreal quasi-stationary planetary waves on the variability of the East Asian winter monsoon system. Intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) is a key enabling technology to reshape the electromagnetic propagation environment and enhance the communication performance. Current single IRS-aided or multiple distributed IRSs-aided wireless communication systems leave inter-IRSs collaboration out of consideration, and as a result, the system performance may be severely restricted. For cooperative double IRSs-aided wireless communication systems, dyadic backscatter channel model is widely used in the performance analysis and optimization. However, the impact of factors such as the size and gain of IRS elements is omitted. As a result, the performance quantification and evaluation are inaccurate. In order to avoid the above limitations, spatial scattering channel model is leveraged to quantify the path loss of the double reflection link in typical application scenarios of double IRSs-aided wireless communication systems. When the near-field condition is satisfied, the electromagnetic wave signal transmitted between IRSs is a spherical wave, which leads to high-rank channel and a lower signal to noise ratio. This paper considers the rank-1 inter-IRSs equivalent channel and derives the closed-form received signal power which reveals its relationship with the deployment of IRSs and the physical and electromagnetic properties of IRSs. Taking the impact of near/far-field effects of IRS on signal propagation further into consideration, the network configurations under which double cooperative IRSs can enhance the system performance are recognized. Simulation results show that whether double IRSs should be selected to assist in the communication between the transmitter and the receiver depends on practical network configurations, and the same number of elements should be assigned to the two IRSs to maximize the system performance if they are adopted. An efficient and more accurate millimeter-wave imaging algorithm, applied to a close-range monostatic personnel screening system, with consideration of dual path propagation loss, is presented in this paper. The algorithm is developed in accordance with a more rigorous physical model for the monostatic system. The physical model treats incident waves and scattered waves as spherical waves with a more rigorous amplitude term as per electromagnetic theory. As a result, the proposed method can achieve a better focusing effect for multiple targets in different range planes. Since the mathematical methods in classical algorithms, such as spherical wave decomposition and Weyl identity, cannot handle the corresponding mathematical model, the proposed algorithm is derived through the method of stationary phase (MSP). The algorithm has been validated by numerical simulations and laboratory experiments. Good performance in terms of computational efficiency and accuracy has been observed. The synthetic reconstruction results show that the proposed algorithm has significant advantages compared with the classical algorithms, and the reconstruction by using full-wave data generated by FEKO further verifies the validity of the proposed algorithm. The exact solution to the axisymmetric acoustic problem of the interaction of a plane wave with a spherical liquid bubble immersed into a dissimilar fluid in a cylindrical cavity is obtained. To satisfy all boundary conditions, the general solution is expanded into a series of normal modes in the coordinate systems fixed to the bubble and cavity, and the expressions of cylindrical wave functions in terms of spherical wave functions are used. The problem is reduced to an infinite system of algebraic equations solved by reduction. The obtained numerical results describe the pressure and velocity fields in the vicinity of the bubble as functions of frequency, fluid characteristics, and geometric parameters of the mechanical system. An analysis of electromagnetic scattering by perfect electromagnetic conductor (PEMC) sphere using Bessel beam incidence is presented which is based on the generalized Lorenz–Mie theory (GLMT). The PEMC is famous for the generalization of the renowned concept of perfect electric and perfect magnetic conductor (PEC and PMC). The scattering problem is solved by representing the Bessel beam fields i.e., incident and scattered in the context of vector spherical wave functions (VSWFs).
