Lack of visibility is one of the challenges that impact drivers' ability to perform driving tasks at night. Although prior studies indicated that lighting increases nighttime safety, lighting at stop-controlled intersections is not mandatory according to many U.S. states' guidelines. This paper aims to investigate the impact of different lighting conditions on safety-related driving behavior during nighttime at stop-controlled intersections. The data were collected using a driving simulator experiment where participants drove through several intersections during daytime, nighttime without lighting, nighttime with partial lighting, and nighttime with full lighting. Collected measures included speed, time-to-collision (TTC), and post-encroachment time (PET). TTC/PET were used as safety surrogate measures to evaluate the impact of lighting on drivers' safety. The results indicated that TTC/PET were higher during daytime and nighttime with partial/full lighting. Furthermore, the findings revealed that lower speeds were recorded at nighttime with partial/full lighting. Kruskal–Wallis test revealed that TTC/PET medians for nighttime without lighting were statistically significantly different from TTC/PET medians of the remaining lighting conditions. Moreover, negative binomial modeling indicated that lack of lighting and speed had inverse correlation with TTC. A survey was carried out in Rome to investigate whether street luminance affects pedestrians’ comfort, visibility and perception. Forty people walked five roads and assessed on a questionnaire their walking comfort, visibility of people and background, perception of lighting intensity and uniformity. Results indicated that walking comfort was affected by mean luminance of whole scene, of sidewalk, of lateral wall and of human body; luminance also influenced the perception of street lighting intensity and uniformity and, to a lesser extent, the visibility of other people and of background. Ubiquitous street lighting is essential for urban areas. While nowadays, LED-based "smart lamps" are commercially available, municipalities can only switch to them in the long run due to financial constraints. Especially, older types of lamps require frequent bulb replacements to maintain the lighting infrastructure's function. To speed up the detection of defects and enable better planning, a non-invasively retrofittable IoT sensor solution is proposed that monitors lamps for defects via visible light sensors, communicates measurement data wirelessly to a central location via LoRaWAN, and processes and visualizes the resulting information centrally. The sensor nodes are capable of automatically adjusting to shifting day- and nighttimes thanks to a second sensor monitoring ambient light. The work specifically addresses aspects of energy efficiency essential to the battery-powered operation of the sensor nodes. Besides design considerations and implementation details, the paper also summarizes the experimental validation of the system by way of an extensive field trial and expounds upon further experiences from it. The need for certification standards for new convergence products, such as a smart LED streetlight system, has been identified as a critical issue. This study proposes simulation modeling for smart LED streetlight systems and suggests three certification standards: the minimum time to initiate dimming-up, the duration of the dimming-up period, and the number of concurrently controlled streetlights. We utilized Relux to model streetlights and roads in terms of luminance levels, and used analytical formulas to compute the braking distances of oncoming vehicles. The two models were integrated into a smart LED streetlight system model using Simio. Simulation experiments were conducted with two objectives: to provide certification standards, and to apply and verify them in real-world cases. We experimented with 630 scenarios, modeling various dynamic situations involving roads and vehicles, and applied the model to two actual roads in the Republic of Korea to test its validity. The model was subsequently applied to roads for which traffic-volume data were available, to determine potential energy savings. The proposed simulation method can be applied to a smart LED streetlight system and to new products that lack certification standards. The assumption that vegetation improves air quality is prevalent in scientific, popular, and political discourse. However, experimental and modeling studies show the effect of green space on air pollutant concentrations in urban settings is highly variable and context specific. We revisited the link between vegetation and air quality using satellite-derived changes of urban green space and air pollutant concentrations from 2,615 established monitoring stations over Europe and the United States. Between 2010 and 2019, stations recorded declines in ambient NO2, (particulate matter) PM10, and PM2.5 (average of −3.14% y−1), but not O3 (+0.5% y−1), pointing to the general success of recent policy interventions to restrict anthropogenic emissions. The effect size of total green space on air pollution was weak and highly variable, particularly at the street scale (15 to 60 m radius) where vegetation can restrict ventilation. However, when isolating changes in tree cover, we found a negative association with air pollution at borough to city scales (120 to 16,000 m) particularly for O3 and PM. The effect of green space was smaller than the pollutant deposition and dispersion effects of meteorological drivers including precipitation, humidity, and wind speed. When averaged across spatial scales, a one SD increase in green space resulted in a 0.8% (95% CI: −3.5 to 2%) decline in air pollution. Our findings suggest that while urban greening may improve air quality at the borough-to-city scale, the impact is moderate and may have detrimental street-level effects depending on aerodynamic factors like vegetation type and urban form. Evidence about the relationship between lighting and crime is mixed. Although a review of evidence found that improved road / street lighting was associated with reductions in crime, these reductions occurred in daylight as well as after dark, suggesting any effect was not due only to changes in visual conditions. One limitation of previous studies is that crime data are reported in aggregate and thus previous analyses were required to make simplifications concerning types of crimes or locations. We will overcome that by working with a UK police force to access records of individual crimes. We will use these data to determine whether the risk of crime at a specific time of day is greater after dark than during daylight. If no difference is found, this would suggest improvements to visual conditions after dark through lighting would have no effect. If however the risk of crime occurring after dark was greater than during daylight, quantifying this effect would provide a measure to assess the potential effectiveness of lighting in reducing crime risk after dark. We will use a case and control approach to analyse ten years of crime data. We will compare counts of crimes in 'case' hours, that are in daylight and darkness at different times of the year, and 'control' hours, that are in daylight throughout the year. From these counts we will calculate odds ratios as a measure of the effect of darkness on risk of crime, using these to answer three questions: 1) Is the risk of overall crime occurring greater after dark than during daylight? 2) Does the risk of crime occurring after dark vary depending on the category of crime? 3) Does the risk of crime occurring after dark vary depending on the geographical area? The article presents selected results of research on improving pedestrian traffic safety. Based on annually-updated accident statistics made available by the police, as well as the new pedestrian traffic regulations in force, detailed work was undertaken to assess the level of visibility of pedestrians by drivers in pedestrian crossing areas. The research was carried out by analyzing several characteristic cases of pedestrian crossings occurring in Poland, in which there was only dedicated lighting for crossings, only street lighting, and a variant of coexistence of both of the above lighting solutions. Illuminance measurements were made in the horizontal and vertical planes of pedestrian crossings, and the results were confronted with the relevant guidelines. The next step involved a complementary measurement of the luminance distribution of the vertical plane containing the pedestrian and a portion of the sub- and super-horizontal background. Visibility pedestrians was considered in positive and negative contrast variants, and was then related to the obtained results of the illumination distribution. The analysis of the results of the study indicated the possibility of limited visibility of pedestrians at the crossings despite the satisfactory results obtained from measurements of the illuminance distribution within the crossings. Lighting pedestrian crossings play an important role in ensuring the safety of pedestrians on the road, especially at night or in conditions of reduced visibility. Currently functioning normative and formal requirements, which are the basis for the design of lighting for pedestrian crossings, are described by criteria of lighting intensity. Each of the existing solutions operates in an urban environment, and at the stage of design and operation, the obtained values of the produced luminance contrast of the pedestrian silhouette and its background are not known. The main purpose of the article is to compare, based on luminance parameters, the three lighting solutions used at pedestrian crossings. This article presents and describes the method of determining the luminance contrast based on luminance measurements of the pedestrian silhouette and its background. Detailed results of measurements of luminance parameters at selected pedestrian crossings are presented. An analysis of the results was made with a breakdown of typical lighting solutions used in urban conditions. The differences between standard lighting were discussed, as well as supplementary and dedicated lighting. The 'compact city' implies a return to the urban morphology of the nineteenth-century city, one in which most people walked, predominantly for utilitarian purposes. This article, however, details a leisure practice—the bourgeois promenade—as it unfolded in Stockholm. Employing a diverse set of texts and visual sources the article seeks to understand how this genteel urban practice was enabled and performed in the midst of a growing working-class population with which they shared the streets. It suggests that new street lighting and smoother pavements redirected vision from the ground to the people around, opening up for walking practices that foregrounded the visual over other senses—one being the bourgeois promenade. It further highlights the multiple rhythms of the promenade and the upper middle class' efforts to create hierarchies of walking on city pavements and in urban parks. In sum, the article shows that leisure mobility was central to the very idea of nineteenth century urban life. The phenomenon that occurs today is an increase in the use of electrical energy consumption every year and especially in Public Street Lighting (PSL) lamps. It can be noticed that almost every road is public, and the expressway has PSL lights. PSL lamps are installed on each median, left or right of the road with a distance between ± lights of 30meters. The object of research on this foreign cooperation is located in the PIK2 project located in the Dadap area, Indonesia. The PSL lamp installation location has a road length of ±1.8Km. PSL lamps used have a power of 250watts. While the specific purpose of this study is to design and analyze measurements of power, voltage and current in PSL lamps and also to control and monitor the condition of PSL lamps through the Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) by applying a star topology for the efficiency of electrical energy consumption in PSL lamps, using microcontrollers, sensors, and LoRa. This research is expected to produce a best practice model for the application of WSN in the PSL system in Indonesia and become a recommendation for companies in improving WSN technology and global competitiveness. The proposed research methods are quantitative and objective, so this study is applied to acquire and distribute data at PSL light points. Maintaining sufficient and uniform roadway lighting is an effective countermeasure to improve pedestrian visibility and prevent nighttime pedestrian crashes and injuries. Previous studies have not quantified the safety effects of roadway photometric patterns (i.e., average lighting level and uniformity) on nighttime pedestrian crashes on roadway segments. Method: This study investigated the association between two roadway photometric criteria (horizontal illuminance mean representing average lighting level and horizontal illuminance standard deviation representing lighting uniformity) and nighttime pedestrian crash occurrence in Florida roadway segments. The matched case-control method was used to decouple the confounding effects between the illuminance mean and standard deviation. Statistically-significant crash modification factors (CMFs) were developed to quantify the safety effects of the mean and standard deviation of horizontal illuminance on nighttime pedestrian crashes. Results: The results show that if the average lighting level on a roadway segment is increased from a low illuminance mean (<0.2 foot-candle [fc]) to a medium illuminance mean [0.2 fc, 0.5 fc], a medium–high illuminance mean (0.5 fc, 1.0 fc], and a high illuminance mean (>1.0 fc), the relative likelihood of nighttime pedestrian crashes on midblock segments in Florida tends to be reduced by 77.5% (CMF = 0.225), 81.2% (CMF = 0.188), and 85.5% (CMF = 0.145), respectively. Practical Applications: A poor uniformity (illuminance standard deviation ≥ 0.52 fc) is likely to increase the relative likelihood of nighttime pedestrian crashes on midblock segments in Florida by 80.3% (CMF = 1.803) compared to good uniformity (illuminance standard deviation < 0.52 fc). Objectives: This paper estimates the effect of changes in street lighting at night on levels of crime at street-level. Analyses investigate spatial and temporal displacement of crime into adjacent streets. Methods: Offense data (burglaries, robberies, theft of and theft from vehicles, and violent crime) were obtained from Thames Valley Police, UK. Street lighting data (switching lights off at midnight, dimming, and white light) were obtained from local authorities. Monthly counts of crime at street-level were analyzed using a conditional fixed-effects Poisson regression model, adjusting for seasonal and temporal variation. Two sets of models analyzed: (1) changes in night-time crimes adjusting for changes in day-time crimes and (2) changes in crimes at all times of the day. Results: Switching lights off at midnight was strongly associated with a reduction in night-time theft from vehicles relative to daytime (rate ratio RR 0.56; 0.41–0.78). Adjusted for changes in daytime, night-time theft from vehicles increased (RR 1.55; 1.14–2.11) in adjacent roads where street lighting remained unchanged. Conclusion: Theft from vehicle offenses reduced in streets where street lighting was switched off at midnight but may have been displaced to better-lit adjacent streets. Relative to daytime, night-time theft from vehicle offenses reduced in streets with dimming while theft from vehicles at all times of the day increased, thus suggesting temporal displacement. The article presents selected results of research related to the use of outdoor lighting, mainly street lighting, in the design of facility illumination. The indicated subject matter primarily concerns architectural structures that are located in urbanized city spaces and in the strict centers of old cities. It is in these areas that there is usually a significant saturation of historic secular and sacred buildings with significant tourist values. At the same time, the immediate surroundings of the structures are usually wrapped by a dense network of street lighting infrastructure. This illumination can be a major setback in the process of illumination planning. Therefore, it is necessary to take into account the extent of this impact on the planned illumination work, related to the selection, mounting, and direction of illumination equipment. This is related to the distance of the street luminaires from the facade, the height of their installation, the distance of the poles from each other, the power of the street luminaires, and the luminous flux distribution of the luminaires used. The purpose of the work undertaken was to analyze the extent to which outdoor lighting influences the planned illumination of an architectural structure and to explore the possibility of its potential use as a component of illumination. Analytical work was conducted at two levels of detail using advanced graphical computer applications. After general considerations and the derivation of conclusions, an example of illumination of a large sacral building was realized successfully using the element of street lighting as a component of illumination. Urban lighting can ensure the safety of people or properties, highlight the architectural or historical features of cities, or provide a healthy use of functionally various facilities by users. In this respect, a properly designed urban lighting can respond to various functional needs and play an active role in revealing the different features of the city. In this respect, it should not be ignored that exterior lighting not only illuminates the environment, but also has social, cultural, and aesthetic effects. It is necessary to specially consider and construct the lighting designs of regions that reflect the connection of cities with the past, such as historical areas, that contribute to tourism, that have a positive effect on the identity of the city, and that have historical value. In this study, the existing lighting schemes of 26005 and 26012 streets, which are located in the Kayalıbag District of Adana city, where registered and traditional buildings are located, were examined and the insufficient conditions in terms of lighting were determined by on-site measurement and observation method. In the light of the obtained data, functional lighting design alternatives are suggested. Suggested designs were modeled in computer environment and compared with current lighting conditions and analyzes were made. It has been revealed that the proposed designs are more successful in providing visual comfort conditions and use energy more effectively compared to the current situation within the framework of lighting standards. In addition, it has been seen that the designs made illuminate the buildings and regions in accordance with the historical importance of the area. Does civil resistance work? Research emphasizes the effectiveness of nonviolent resistance over violent resistance in achieving campaign goals, with the seminal study Why Civil Resistance Works (WCRW) by Chenoweth and Stephan being the main point of reference to date. I revisit this pivotal finding in three steps. First, I reproduce WCRW's results on nonviolent effectiveness. Second, I discuss how cases may have been overlooked due to a streetlight effect. Third, I quantify the results' sensitivity using simulations. I find that WCRW's main findings on nonviolent effectiveness are highly sensitive to variable selection, under-coverage bias, bootstrapping, and omitted variable bias. A street lighting system is a very essential part of the highways and streets of a smart city. Managing power consumption and maintenance of a street light system will be a challenging task in huge countries. The proposed work is mainly focused on the minimization of power consumption in the implementation of a smart street lighting system. Also, use a mobile application for setting up the brightness levels of the lamps in an encrypted form so that an unauthorized person will not be able to modify the settings. In the existing streetlight system, wireless sensors are installed to control and monitor the streetlamps. In the proposed system, using an nRF24L01 radio transceiver module, a secured communication link is established to operate the streetlights depending on the ambient weather conditions, movement of humans, vehicles and any other objects. A failsafe mechanism is implemented in the modules for conventional lamp operation in the case of module failures. Light-dependent resistor (LDR) is used to determine the ambient brightness levels to automatically turn on/off the streetlights based on weather conditions and lighting on roads. Using smartphones, we access and control the brightness information from the master node at which the nRF24L01 radio transceiver module is installed, and the same information is relayed to all the slave nodes. The results show that we could effectively monitor and control the brightness of streetlights in a secure way and there is a significant amount of power savings. The proposed system saves the average powers of 53.45%, 44.76%, 39.39%, and 32.25% respectively for 10%, 20%, 30%, and 50% idle mode brightness compared to the state-of-the-art techniques present in the literature. Introduction: Spatiotemporal correlations have been widely recognized in single-vehicle (SV) crash severity analysis. However, the interactions between them are rarely explored. The current research proposed a spatiotemporal interaction logit (STI-logit) model to regression SV crash severity using observations in Shandong, China. Method: Two representative regression patterns-mixture component and Gaussian conditional autoregression (CAR)-were employed separately to characterize the spatiotemporal interactions. Two existing statistical techniques-spatiotemporal logit and random parameters logit-were also calibrated and compared with the proposed approach with the aim of highlighting the best one. In addition, three road types-arterial road, secondary road, and branch road-were modeled separately to clarify the variable influence of contributors on crash severity. Results : The calibration results indicate that the STI-logit model outperforms other crash models, highlighting that comprehensively accommodating spatiotemporal correlations and their interactions is a recommended crash modeling approach. Additionally, the STI-logit using mixture component fits crash observations better than that using Gaussian CAR and this finding remains stable across road types, suggesting that simultaneously accommodating stable and unstable spatiotemporal risk patterns can further strengthen model fit. According to the significance of risk factors, there is a significant positive correlation between distracted diving, drunk driving, motorcycle, dark (without street lighting), and collision with fixed object and serious SV crashes. Truck and collision with pedestrian significantly mitigate the likelihood of serious SV crashes. Interestingly, the coefficient of roadside hard barrier is significant and positive in branch road model, but it is not significant in arterial road model and secondary road model. Practical Applications: These findings provide a superior modeling framework and various significant contributors, which are beneficial for mitigating the risk of serious crashes. This study aimed to plan an alternative for community street lighting in an older community by simulating illuminance improvements. We applied the natural surveillance principle of crime prevention through environmental design to an older community in Busan Metropolitan City in South Korea. We conducted four field investigations to identify lighting sources and measure their illuminance and heights. Using the Relux Pro program, the gaps in lighting were identified and alternative plans for improvement for night lighting were simulated. Narrow alleys and houses were sources of light disruption and lighting blind spots. We determined the location and type of lighting within the community and considered the continuity necessary to meet natural surveillance standards in alternative settings. We considered visibility, facial recognition, the risk of traffic accidents, and other variables (i.e., lamp type). Our results confirmed that the community's average horizontal illuminance met the requirement of the Korean Agency for Technology and Standards and the minimal illuminance criterion of the International Commission on Illumination in all community lighting spaces--which was improved by about 2.2% to 85.7% compared to the previous situation. The results of this study are meaningful in that they present an effective planning support tool using simulation methods to establish community street lighting alternatives and determine their suitability. To date, studies of the effects of artificial light on wildlife have mostly focused on street lighting. However, less attention has been paid to light from greenhouses, which can be sources of substantial light pollution from autumn to early spring. We investigated how daily 4–8 h of nocturnal illumination from a greenhouse influences the time of daily vocalization of forest birds in a non-urban area. Our study revealed that birds exposed to greenhouse lightning start dawn singing and calling earlier and stop dusk vocalization later, especially before the breeding season in the second half of February. The most affected species were the European Robin (entire study period) and Blackbird (early period only), but other species also revealed a significant impact on vocal activity (calls). The loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) primers were designed for the conserved region of the selected Nicotiana-specific gene Ntsp151 sequence, and a visual LAMP detection method for tobacco materials based on the SYBR Green I was established. The genomic DNA extraction method and reaction conditions were optimized in the detection process. Furthermore, the specificity and sensitivity of the LAMP reaction system were evaluated. The results showed that the genomic DNA extracted by Chelex-100 could be directly amplified and fluorescently colored by LAMP; the optimal reaction conditions of the LAMP primers were amplification temperature 63 °C, reaction time 60 min, Mg2+ concentration 6 mmol/L; LAMP detection method had good specificity and the results of chromogenic amplification and fluorescence detection of 17 non-tobacco materials and 1 tobacco material were consistent and had good specificity. The sensitivity test showed that the minimum detection limit of the LAMP reaction system was 102 copies/μL. Computational methods play a significant role in reducing energy consumption in cities. Many different sensor networks (e.g., traffic intensity sensors, intelligent cameras, air quality monitoring systems) generate data that can be useful for both efficient management (including planning) and reducing energy usage. Street lighting is one of the most significant contributors to urban power consumption. This paper presents a summary of recent attempts to use computational methods to reduce energy usage by lighting systems, with special focus on graph-based methods. Such algorithms require all the necessary data to be integrated, in order to function properly: this task is not trivial, and is very time-consuming; therefore, the second part of the paper proposes a novel approach to integrating urban datasets and automating the optimisation process. In two practical examples, we show how spatially triggered graph transformations (STGT) can be used to build a model based on the road network map, sensor locations and street lighting data, and to introduce semantic relations between the objects, including utilisation of existing infrastructure, and planning of development to maximise efficiency. Anarchists vs. the State: As Latin America swings left, activists keep alive a long anarchist tradition of critiquing the limits of state power. While anarchists remain skeptical of efforts initiated from the top of the political-economic -social hierarchy-national governments-there is often a note of cautious optimism with the election ofleftist governments. The smart city concept has been popularized in the urbanization of major metropolitan areas through the implementation of intelligent systems and technology to serve the increasing human population. This work developed an automatic light adjustment system at Thammasat University, Rangsit Campus, Thailand, with a primary objective of optimizing energy efficiency, while providing sufficient illumination for the campus. The development consists of two sections: the device control and the prediction model. The device control functionalities were developed with the user interface to enable control of the smart street light devices and the application programming interface (API) to send the light-adjusting command. The prediction model was created using an AI-assisted data analytic platform to obtain the predicted illuminance values so as to, subsequently, suggest light-dimming values according to the current environment. Four machine-learning models were performed on a nine-month environmental dataset to acquire predictions. The result demonstrated that the three-day window size setting with the XGBoost model yielded the best performance, attaining the correlation coefficient value of 0.922, showing a linear relationship between actual and predicted illuminance values using the test dataset. The prediction retrieval API was established and connected to the device control API, which later created an automated system that operated at a 20-min interval. This article proposed the use of multi-period mixed-integer linear programming method for investment planning to support decision-making processes in upgrading and managing street lighting systems. The technique incorporates a multi-variate model that maximizes energy-saving by considering budget constraints, the state of the lighting system, and the available technology in the market to replace the existing streetlights. This topic is novel because the complexity of the problem relies on the existence of several potentially large investments. As explained in this paper, the proposed method optimally considers the investments and returns as a combination that maximizes energy savings. The method was tested using actual data from an undisclosed public lighting system in Colombia. The results obtained revealed that multi-period investment optimization based on mixed-integer linear programming is an ideal investment plan, particularly in streetlight systems. Therefore, it forms an invaluable tool for street lighting systems' administrators and decision-makers in optimizing and facilitating the critical decision-making process in their work environment. Gashanes, which were established to meet the lighting and heating needs of Dolmabahçe and Beylerbeyi Palaces, shared their surplus production with the outside to illuminate the surrounding districts. Thus, the lighting of Istanbul with gas started and the public lighting of its streets was first possible with gas. After the Dolmabahçe and Kuzguncuk gasworks established in the middle of the 19th century, Yedikule and Hasanpaşa Gashouses were put into service in the last quarter of the century. The use of gas in Istanbul, in its journey that has passed through many stages and reached a century and a half, experienced the biggest leap over the rate of increase in the number of subscribers after 1945, when Hasanpaşa and Yedikule Gasworks were nationalized, and entered a downward trend after 1965. The working range was determined between 1945-1967 after the nationalization, in which the use of coal gas was intense. Over the inter-year performance of the enterprise, the gas consumption of the society has been evaluated and the economic income-expenditure balance has been compared. Objectives: For more than one hundred years, street lighting has been one of the most ubiquitous capital investments in public safety. Prior research on street lighting is largely limited to ecological studies of very small geographic areas, creating substantial challenges with respect to both causal identification and statistical power. We address limitations of the prior literature by studying a natural experiment created by short-term disruptions to municipal street lighting. Methods: We leverage a natural experiment created by the differential timing of the repair of nearly 300,000 street light outages in Chicago. By conditioning on street segment fixed effects and focusing on a short window of time around the repair of a street light outage, we can credibly rule out confounding factors due to area-specific time trends as well as street segment-level correlates of crime. Results: We find that outdoor nighttime crimes change very little on street segments affected by street light outages, but that outages cause crime to spill over to nearby street segments. Effects are largest for robberies and motor vehicle theft. Conclusions: Despite strong environmental and social characteristics that tend to tie crime to place, we observe that street light outages are sufficiently salient to disrupt longstanding patterns. While the impact of localized street light outages can reverberate throughout a community, the findings imply that improvements in lighting can be defeated by the displacement of crime to adjacent spaces and therefore do not necessarily suggest that localized investments in municipal street lighting will yield a large public safety dividend. When it comes to smart cities, one of the biggest issues is energy optimization. This is because these cities employ a large number of interconnected devices to autonomously manage city operations, which consumes a lot of energy. This difficulty has been addressed in this paper by using the advantages of contemporary cutting-edge technologies such as the Internet of Things (IoT), 5 G, and cloud computing for energy efficiency in smart cities. With the use of these cutting-edge technologies, we have proposed a model that can be used to optimize energy consumption in smart homes and smart cities alike. Street lighting, building and street billboards, smart homes, and smart parking are among the four essential features of smart cities that would benefit from the proposed model's energy savings. All smart city electric appliances will be equipped with IoT sensors that will detect movements and react to commands. In order to transport data swiftly between communication channels and the cloud, 5 G technology will be deployed, and the cloud technology will be used to store and retrieve data effectively. Street lighting should realise normative illuminance levels throughout the roadway. The determination of the illuminance level of a road requires the use of a measurement technique based on classic point measurements at a specific grid of measurement points. Classical stationary measurements using the method indicated in the prescriptive requirements are time-consuming and labor-intensive. The authors of the article have presented a concept of a measurement system that could be used to partially automate road lighting measurements and increase their universality. The proposed measurement system uses the simultaneous measurement of illuminance values from lux meters located on the roof of the vehicle. The measurement is carried out while the vehicle is driving on a lit road, and the illuminance values are localized using a global GPS satellite location system equipped with RTK corrections. The use of GPS RTK localization data corrections allowed the measurement results to be unambiguously assigned to post-measurement fields. On the basis of the collected measurement data, with the use of terrain maps, it is possible to determine in detail the illuminance parameters on the surveyed road sections. The paper presents the construction of a measurement system for the mobile measurement of street lighting intensity using a GPS RTK receiver, along with verification of its correct operation. The correctness of the system's operation was confirmed on the basis of the Measurement System Analysis (MSA) method. The calculations performed confirmed an R&R result of 11.14%. The proposed solution allows data on the lighting parameters of the surveyed road section to be obtained in a quick and repeatable manner. As a result, it is possible to make a quick assessment of the street lighting condition of the entire road section. Research summary: For centuries and even millenia, street lighting has been among the most ubiquitous capital investments that societies have made in public safety. Recent research by Chalfin et al. (2021)—the first randomized experiment that studies the effect of street lighting on public safety—demonstrated that a tactical street lighting intervention in New York City's public housing developments led to a 36% reduction in serious criminal activity during nighttime hours in the 6 months after the new lights were rolled out. But do the effects endure? In this study, we examine the longer‐term effects of the same street lighting intervention using 3 years of outcome data. We show that the effects of the lighting intervention persist over time. Critically, the intervention reduced crime without eventually leading to a larger number of arrests. Policy implications: As street lighting requires a large up‐front capital investment, the attractiveness of enhanced lighting to policy makers depends critically on whether its public safety benefits will be long lasting. These findings provide some assurance that the impact of street lighting can endure beyond their initial installation. The analysis of the colour of artificial lights at night has an impact on diverse fields, but current data sources have either limited resolution or scarce availability of images for a specific region. In this work, we propose crowdsourced photos of streetlights as an alternative data source: for this, we designed NightUp Castelldefels, a pilot for a citizen science experiment aimed at collecting data about the colour of streetlights. In particular, we extract the colour from the collected images and compare it to an official database, showing that it is possible to classify streetlights according to their colour from photos taken by untrained citizens with their own smartphones. We also compare our findings to the results obtained from one of the current sources for this kind of study. The comparison highlights how the two approaches give complementary information about artificial lights at night in the area. The village has a lot of potentials to improve the welfare of the community, such as Sodong coastal tourism in Cilacap which can be developed with Community Based Tourism. The study used descriptive quantitative methods and analysis with data collection through questionnaires, interviews, focus group discussions, observation, and documentation. Respondents were determined by a total sample of 120 people consisting of internal parties, namely the village government, tourism administrators, fishermen, farmers, and traders using Random Sampling of as many as 60 people and 60 people from outside visitors using Accidental Sampling. The research took place in Sodong Beach, Karangbenda Village, Cilacap Regency, Central Java Province of Indonesia. The results showed that the development of coastal tourism requires improving facilities and infrastructure such as electricity networks, street lighting, trash cans, and information centers. Then it requires a joint commitment to tourism managers and owners, a network of cooperation, and a more proactive government role with policies, budgets, and programs to make coastal tourism based on agribusiness and community participation. This paper presents an adaptive control scheme for streetlights by optimizing the energy consumed using deep learning during late hours at night. A city's infrastructure is not complete without a proper lightening system for streets and roads. The streetlight systems often consume up to 50% of the electricity utilized by the city. Due to this reason, it has a huge financial impact on the electricity generation of the city. Furthermore, continuous luminosity of the streetlights contributes to the environmental pollution as well. Economists and ecologists around the globe are working hard to reduce the global impact of continued utilization of streetlights at night. In regard to a developing country which is already struggling to produce enough electrical energy to fulfill its industry requirements, proposing a system to lessen the load of the energy utilization by the streetlights should be beneficial. Therefore, an innovative and novel energy efficient streetlight control system is presented based on embedded video processing. The proposed system uses deep learning for the optimization of energy consumption during the later hours. Conventional street lighting systems consume enormous amounts of electricity, even when there is no need for the light, i.e., during off-peak hours and late at night when there is reduced or no traffic on the roads. The proposed system was designed, and implemented and tested at two different sites in Karachi, Pakistan. The system is capable of detecting vehicles and pedestrians and is able to track their movements. The YOLOv5 deep-learning based algorithm was trained according to the local requirements and implemented on the NVIDIA standalone multimedia processing unit "Jetson Nano". The output of the YOLOv5 is then used to control the intensity of the streetlights through intensity control unit. This intensity control unit also considers the area, object and time for the switching of streetlights. Research Summary: This article reports on an updated systematic review and meta‐analysis of the effects of street lighting interventions on crime in public places. Following Campbell Collaboration guidelines, it uses robust criteria for inclusion of studies, comprehensive search strategies to identify eligible studies, a detailed protocol for coding key study characteristics, and rigorous methods for analyzing studies. A total of 21 studies met the inclusion criteria, originating in four countries (United States, United Kingdom, Brazil, and South Korea) and covering almost 50 years (1974–2021). The review finds that street lighting interventions are associated with a significant desirable effect on total crime (14% reduction in treatment areas compared with comparable control areas); desirable effects are greater in studies that measured both night and day crimes than in studies that only measured night crimes; and street lighting is followed by a significant reduction in property crimes, but not in violent crimes. Policy Implications: Compared to past years, it would seem that an even stronger case can be made today for street lighting interventions to be part of crime‐prevention policy. A larger body of high‐quality evaluation research, implemented in a range of high‐crime public places, some evidence of value for money, and a continued desirable impact on crime, especially property crime, all point to the policy relevance of street lighting interventions.
