OBJECTIVES: To identify subgroups of patients with distinct cough occurrence profiles and evaluate for differences among these subgroups. SAMPLE & SETTING: Outpatients receiving chemotherapy (N = 1,338) completed questionnaires six times over two chemotherapy cycles. METHODS & VARIABLES: Occurrence of cough was assessed using the Memorial Symptom Assessment Scale. Latent class analysis was used to identify subgroups with distinct cough occurrence profiles. Parametric and nonparametric tests were used to evaluate for differences. RESULTS: Four distinct cough profiles were identified (None, Decreasing, Increasing, and High). Risk factors associated with membership in the High class included lower annual household income; history of smoking; self-reported diagnoses of lung disease, heart disease, and back pain; and having lung cancer. Aim: To explore predictors of spiritual well‐being behaviors among heart failure patients based on Wilson and Cleary's conceptual model of health‐related quality of life and to clarify the interrelationships among these variables. Design: A descriptive and correlational study design was used. Methods: This study included 202 heart failure patients treated between October 2020 and July 2021. Data were collected using the Symptom Status Questionnaire‐Heart Failure, Perception of Health Scale, and Functional Assessment of Chronic Illness Therapy‐Spiritual Well‐Being Scale. Descriptive analysis, correlation, and structural equation modeling were performed. Results: Characteristic factors positively affected spiritual well‐being both directly (β = 0.19, p = 0.007) and indirectly (β = 0.19; CI (0.106; 0.311)). The direct relationship between health perception and spiritual well‐being was significant (β = 0.83, p < 0.05). Symptom status acted as an essential mediator between model variables and spiritual well‐being (β = −0.28; CI (−0.449; −0.133)). Comorbidity and symptom status also influence spiritual well‐being through health perceptions. These variables explain 77% of the variance in spiritual well‐being. Conclusion: The modified structural equation modeling based on Wilson and Cleary's conceptual model fits well in predicting spiritual well‐being in patients with heart failure. Spiritual well‐being was reported to be poor, and changes in spiritual well‐being were predicted by age, educational level, marital status, comorbidity, symptom status, and health perception. The results can be applied to patients with heart failure and may serve as a guide for assessment and interventions for improving spiritual well‐being. Clinical Relevance: This study mainly concludes that symptom status and perceived health status affect spiritual well‐being in heart failure patients. Symptom relief and improvement in perceived health status interventions may help enhance spiritual well‐being in this population. Future studies are needed to investigate the different predictor's effects on spiritual well‐being and examine whether symptom management and health status‐enhancing interventions result in improved spiritual well‐being in the heart failure population. Exertional breathlessness is a cardinal symptom of cardiorespiratory disease. How does breathlessness abnormality, graded using normative reference equations during cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET), relate to self-reported and physiologic responses in people with chronic airflow limitation (CAL)? An analysis was done of people aged ≥ 40 years with CAL undergoing CPET in the Canadian Cohort Obstructive Lung Disease study. Breathlessness intensity ratings (Borg CR10 scale [0-10 category-ratio scale for breathlessness intensity rating]) were evaluated in relation to power output, rate of oxygen uptake, and minute ventilation at peak exercise, using normative reference equations as follows: (1) probability of breathlessness normality (probability of having an equal or greater Borg CR10 rating among healthy people; lower probability reflecting more severe breathlessness) and (2) presence of abnormal breathlessness (rating above the upper limit of normal). Associations with relevant participant-reported and physiologic outcomes were evaluated. We included 330 participants (44% women): mean ± SD age, 64 ± 10 years (range, 40–89 years); FEV 1 /FVC, 57.3% ± 8.2%; FEV 1 , 75.6% ± 17.9% predicted. Abnormally low exercise capacity (peak rate of oxygen uptake < lower limit of normal) was present in 26%. Relative to peak power output, rate of oxygen uptake, and minute ventilation, abnormally high breathlessness was present in 26%, 25%, and 18% of participants. For all equations, abnormally high exertional breathlessness was associated with worse lung function, exercise capacity, self-reported symptom burden, physical activity, and health-related quality of life; and greater physiologic abnormalities during CPET. Abnormal breathlessness graded using CPET normative reference equations was associated with worse clinical, physiological, and functional outcomes in people with CAL, supporting construct validity of abnormal exertional breathlessness. Most children treated for obstructive sleep disordered breathing (oSDB) are not systematically assessed by polysomnography (PSG) nor by structuredsymptom quantification before surgical treatment. The main objective of this study wasto investigate the effect of adeno-tonsillotomy (ATO) on symptom burden and PSGparameters. Children aged 2–10 years with oSDB were selected for ATO based uponclinical findings according to current standards of care in Denmark. Each childunderwent standardized assessment before and 3 months after surgery, including aPSG, tonsil size assessment, and the Pediatric Sleep Questionnaire –Sleep RelatedBreathing Disorder (PSQ) to quantify symptom burden. Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA)was defined as an obstructive apnea-hypopnea index (oAHI) ≥2/h. Successfultreatment was defined as post-surgery oAHI ≤5/h, and complete cure as oAHI ≤2/h. Fifty-two children were included. Mean age was 5.0 years (SD ± 1.76). Thirteen children were identified with baseline oAHI <2/h. Significant improvement inOSA severity was observed in children with moderate-to-severe OSA, in whom oAHI decreased from 15.7/h to 2.6/h (p < 0.001). Treatment success was obtained in 85% and cure was obtained in 42% of children. PSQ-score significantly improved from 0.52 (CI 0.47–0.56) to 0.26 (CI 0.21–0.32) (p < 0.001). Baseline OSA severity was notcorrelated to baseline symptom burden nor to symptom relief after ATO. There were noserious adverse events. Adeno-tonsillotomy significantly reduced symptom burden in otherwise healthy children with oSDB symptoms. Significant improvement in oAHI was observedonly in children with moderate-to-severe OSA. Eating disorders are serious mental health conditions that are accompanied by negative health outcomes, high mortality rates, impaired functioning, and comorbid mental health conditions. Despite many empirically supported interventions for eating disorders, it remains one of the most challenging mental disorders to treat, as individuals often struggle to maintain treatment gains. One method of improving our understanding of effective eating disorder treatment is to identify important processes of change to target during therapy. The aim of the current study was to test two candidate mediators of disordered eating symptom change during residential treatment: self-compassion and body image inflexibility. In the present study, women and adolescent girls (N = 132) completed a battery of measures, including eating disorder severity, self-compassion, and body image inflexibility, at admission to and discharge from a residential eating disorder facility. Our results indicated that changes in body image inflexibility and self-compassion, specifically self-judgment, were both mediators between ED symptom severity from pre- to post-treatment. These results have potential treatment implications, pointing to the possible importance of targeting body image inflexibility, self-judgment, and self-compassion while treating eating disorders. Purpose: The study investigated the relationship of gut microbiome features and sickness symptoms in kidney transplant recipients. Methods: Employing a prospective, longitudinal design, we collected data from 19 participants who had undergone living-donor kidney transplant at three timepoints (pre-transplant and 1 week and 3 months post-transplant). Sickness symptom data and fecal specimens were collected at each timepoint. Participants were grouped either as high or low sickness symptom severity at baseline. Shotgun metagenomics sequencing characterized gut microbial structure and functional gene content. Fecal microbial features, including alpha (evenness and richness within samples) and beta (dissimilarities between samples) diversity and relative abundances, were analyzed using R statistical packages. Cross-sectional and longitudinal analyses examined relationships between gut microbial features and sickness symptoms. Results: Although our exploratory findings revealed no significant differences in alpha and beta diversity between groups, the high-severity group showed lower microbial richness and evenness than the low-severity group. The high-severity group had enriched relative abundance of bacteria from the genera Citrobacter and Enterobacter and reduced relative abundance of bacteria from the genus Akkermansia across timepoints. No functional genes differed significantly between groups or timepoints. Conclusions: Kidney transplant recipients with high symptom burden displayed increased putative proinflammatory bacteria and decreased beneficial bacteria. This study provides an effect size that future large cohort studies can employ to confirm associations between gut microbial features and sickness symptom experiences in the kidney transplant population. Long COVID is associated with many symptoms, including fatigue. As some with long COVID report remission of symptoms over time, previous long COVID has become increasingly prevalent. This cross-sectional study assessed differences in fatigue and somatic symptom burden among individuals with current, previous, and no history of long COVID symptoms. An online survey was conducted with United States adults (N = 2,872), with 2,310 reporting never experiencing long COVID, 183 reporting previously experiencing long COVID, and 379 reporting currently experiencing long COVID. Multivariable linear regression analyses were used to assess the association of long COVID status with fatigue and somatic symptom burden. Participants were an average age of 41.3, with the majority identifying as female (51.7%), White (87.6%), and non-Hispanic or Latino/e (87.6%). Both fatigue and somatic symptoms were significantly higher among those with both current (ps < 0.001; d = 1.24, 1.38 respectively) and previous long COVID (ps < 0.001; d = 0.42, 0.82 respectively) compared to those reporting never having long COVID. These differences remained after accounting for health behaviors (alcohol use, tobacco use, physical activity, sleep). Hallucinations are a core feature of psychosis, and their severity during the acute phase of illness is associated with a range of poor outcomes. Various clinical and sociodemographic factors may predict hallucinations and other positive psychotic symptoms in first episode psychosis (FEP). Despite this, the precise factors associated with hallucinations at first presentation to an early intervention service have not been extensively researched. Through detailed interviews and chart reviews, we investigated sociodemographic and clinical predictors in 636 minimally-medicated patients who entered PEPP-Montréal, an early intervention service for FEP, between 2003 and 2018. Hallucinations were measured using the Scale for the Assessment of Positive Symptoms (SAPS), while negative symptoms were assessed using the Scale for the Assessment of Negative symptoms (SANS). Depressive symptoms were evaluated through the Calgary Depression Scale for Schizophrenia (CDSS), and anxiety symptoms via the Hamilton Rating Scale for Anxiety (HAS). A majority (n = 381, 59.9 %) of the sample presented with clinically significant hallucinations (SAPS global hallucinations score ≥ 3) at program entry. These patients had an earlier age at onset, fewer years of education, and a higher severity of delusions, depression and negative symptoms than those without clinical-level hallucinations. These results suggest that individuals with clinically significant hallucinations at admission tend to be younger and have a greater overall symptom burden. This makes it especially important to monitor hallucinations alongside delusions, depression and negative symptoms in order to identify who might benefit from targeted interventions. Background Methods Key Results Conclusions and Inferences Patients with chronic laryngopharyngeal symptoms, with or without pathologic reflux, frequently have poor response to standard therapies, which may be a result of overlapping cognitive‐affective processes. Therefore, the aims of this study included measuring psychosocial distress and laryngeal‐specific cognitive distress in patients with chronic laryngopharyngeal symptoms (LPS) as well as comparing these among laryngeal symptomatic patients with and without conclusive gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).This prospective, single‐center study enrolled adults with chronic LPS from 9/22 to 6/23. Patients completed eight questionnaires on quality of life, symptom burden, and psychosocial distress. The laryngeal cognitive affective tool (LCAT) assessed laryngeal‐specific hypervigilance and anxiety; LCAT scores ≥33 were elevated. All patients underwent objective testing with endoscopy and/or ambulatory reflux monitoring and were categorized as proven GERD (GER+) or no proven GERD (GER−).One hundred twenty‐nine patients were included: 66% female, mean age 54.1 (17.5) years, mean BMI 27.6 (6.8) kg/m2, 66% Caucasian, 57% with an elevated LCAT, and 53% GER+. Moderate‐to‐severe anxiety was found in 39% and moderate‐to‐severe depression in 19%. An elevated LCAT alone or with an elevated anxiety/depression score was found in 58%. Patient‐reported outcomes scores, including LCAT scores (32.9 (13.8) GER− vs. 33.1 (12.6) GER+, p = 0.91), were similar between patients with and without GER+.Patients with chronic LPS experience heightened levels of hypervigilance, symptom‐specific anxiety, and psychosocial distress, regardless of the presence of pathologic GER. Background: Patients diagnosed with advanced stage cancer face an elevated risk of suicide. We aimed to develop a suicidal ideation (SI) risk prediction model in patients with advanced cancer for early warning of their SI and facilitate suicide prevention in this population. Patients and Methods: We consecutively enrolled patients with multiple types of advanced cancers from 10 cancer institutes in China from August 2019 to December 2020. Demographic characteristics, clinicopathological data, and clinical treatment history were extracted from medical records. Symptom burden, psychological status, and SI were assessed using the MD Anderson Symptom Inventory (MDASI), Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS), and Patient Health Questionnaire‐9 (PHQ‐9), respectively. A multivariable logistic regression model was employed to establish the model structure. Results: In total, 2814 participants were included in the final analysis. Nine predictors including age, sex, number of household members, history of previous chemotherapy, history of previous surgery, MDASI score, HADS‐A score, HADS‐D score, and life satisfaction were retained in the final SI prediction model. The model achieved an area under the curve (AUC) of 0.85 (95% confidential interval: 0.82–0.87), with AUCs ranging from 0.75 to 0.95 across 10 hospitals and higher than 0.83 for all cancer types. Conclusion: This study built an easy‐to‐use, good‐performance predictive model for SI. Purpose: Symptom assessment is central to appropriate adenomyosis management. Using a WeChat mini-program-based portal, we aimed to establish a valid symptom assessment scale of adenomyosis (AM-SAS) to precisely and timely identify needs of symptom management and ultimately, to alert disease recurrence. Methods: A combination of intensive interviews of patients with adenomyosis and natural language processing on WeChat clinician-patient group communication was used to generate a pool of symptom items-related to adenomyosis. An expert panel shortened the list to form the provisional AM-SAS. The AM-SAS was built in a Wechat mini-programmer and sent to patients to exam the psychotically validity and clinical applicability through classic test theory and item response theory. Results: Total 338 patients with adenomyosis (29 for interview, 179 for development, and 130 for external validation) and 86 gynecologists were included. The over 90% compliance to the WeChat-based symptom evaluate. The AM-SAS demonstrated the uni-dimensionality through Rasch analysis, good internal consistency (all Cronbach's alphas above 0.8), and test-retest reliability (intraclass correlation coefficients ranging from 0.65 to 0.84). Differences symptom severity score between patients in the anemic and normal hemoglobin groups (3.04 ± 3.17 vs. 5.68 ± 3.41, P < 0.001). In external validation, AM-SAS successfully detected differences in symptom burden and physical status between those with or without relapse. Conclusion: Electronic PRO-based AM-SAS is a valuable instrument for monitoring AM-related symptoms. As an outcome measure of multiple symptoms in clinical trials, the AM-SAS may identify patients who need extensive care after discharge and capture significant beneficial changes of patients may have been overlooked. The current study investigated how students' private in-class use of technical devices is associated with teachers' mental health. Data of 361 teachers from primary and secondary schools in Germany were assessed via online surveys. The present cross-sectional results show a positive association between burden caused by the students' private in-class use of technical devices and teachers' depression symptoms. Both were negatively linked to teachers' positive mental health (PMH) and teachers' competence in handling students' private in-class use of technical devices. In a moderated mediation analysis, the association between burden and depression symptoms was mediated by PMH. Teachers' competence moderated the link between PMH and depression symptoms. Specifically, the higher the competence, the weaker the relationship between both variables. Thus, the protective effect of teachers' competence could be especially important in persons with low PMH. Background: A subset of individuals (10–20%) experience post-COVID condition (PCC) subsequent to initial SARS-CoV-2 infection, which lacks effective treatment. PCC carries a substantial global burden associated with negative economic and health impacts. This study aims to evaluate the association between plasma taurine levels with self-reported symptoms and adverse clinical outcomes in patients with PCC. Methods and findings: We analyzed the plasma proteome and metabolome of 117 individuals during their acute COVID-19 hospitalization and at the convalescence phase six-month post infection. Findings were compared with 28 age and sex-matched healthy controls. Plasma taurine levels were negatively associated with PCC symptoms and correlated with markers of inflammation, tryptophan metabolism, and gut dysbiosis. Stratifying patients based on the trajectories of plasma taurine levels during six-month follow-up revealed a significant association with adverse clinical events. Increase in taurine levels during the transition to convalescence were associated with a reduction in adverse events independent of comorbidities and acute COVID-19 severity. In a multivariate analysis, increased plasma taurine level between acute and convalescence phase was associated with marked protection from adverse clinical events with a hazard ratio of 0.13 (95% CI: 0.05–0.35; p<0.001). Conclusions: Taurine emerges as a promising predictive biomarker and potential therapeutic target in PCC. Background: Patients with myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPNs) experience a high disease-related symptom burden. A specific instrument to evaluate quality of life (QoL), i.e., the MPN Symptom Assessment Form Total Symptom Score (MPN-SAF TSS; MPN-10), was developed. We conducted the translation, cultural adaptation, and validation into Romanian of the MPN-10. Methods: We translated the MPN-10 and tested its psychometric properties. Results: We recruited 180 MPN patients: 66 polycythemia vera (36.67%), 61 essential thrombocythemia (33.89%), 51 primary and secondary myelofibrosis (SMF) (28.33%), and 2 MPN-unclassifiable (1.11%). The mean TSS was 19.51 ± 16.51 points. Fatigue, inactivity, and concentration problems were the most cumbersome symptoms. We detected scoring differences between MPN subtypes regarding weight loss (p < 0.001), fatigue (p = 0.006), early satiety (p = 0.007), night sweats (p = 0.047), pruritus (p = 0.05), and TSS (p = 0.021). There were strong positive associations between TSS and inactivity, fatigue, and concentration problems, and moderate negative correlations between QoL scores and all MPN-10 items. Cronbach's α internal consistency coefficient was 0.855. The Kaiser–Meyer–Olkin construct validity test result was 0.870 and the Bartlett Sphericity Test was significant (p < 0.001). Symptom scores were loaded into one single factor according to the exploratory factor analysis. Conclusions: The Romanian MPN-10 version displayed excellent psychometric properties and is a reliable instrument for assessing symptom burden and QoL in Romanian MPN patients. Connective tissue diseases (CTD) are heterogeneous, immune-mediated inflammatory disorders often presenting with multiorgan involvement. With the advent of high-resolution computed tomography, CTD-related pleuritis—pleural thickening and effusion—is now increasingly recognized early in the disease trajectory. The natural history of CTD-related pleural effusions varies from spontaneous resolution to progressive fibrothorax with ventilatory impairment. Treatment of the underlying CTD is necessary to manage the pleural disease. Depending on the degree of symptom burden and physiological insult, specific treatment of pleural disease can include monitoring, repeated aspirations, systemic anti-inflammatory medication, and surgical decortication. • Patient reported outcome measure for all limb girdle muscular dystrophies (LGMDs). • This outcome measure is specific to LGMD and measures 15 areas of disease burden. • This measure is designed for use in clinical trials to capture patient experience. Limb girdle muscular dystrophy (LGMD) is a debilitating disease and the fourth most common muscular dystrophy. This study describes the development of the LGMD-Health Index (LGMD-HI). Participants were aged >18 years and recruited from three LGMD registries and GRASP-LGMD consortium. The initial instrument, comprised of 16 thematic subscales and 161 items, underwent expert review resulting in item removal as well as confirmatory factor analysis followed by inter-rater reliability and internal consistency of the subscales. Following expert review, one subscale and 59 items were eliminated. Inter-rater reliability was assessed and five items were removed due to Cohen's kappa <0.5. The final subscales had high internal consistencies with an average Cronbach alpha of 0.92. Test re-test reliability of the final instrument was high (intraclass correlation coefficient=0.97). Known groups validity testing showed a statistically significant difference in LGMD-HI scores amongst subjects based on ambulation status (28.7 vs 50.0, p < 0.0001), but not sex, employment status, or genetic subtype. The final instrument is comprised of 15 subscales and 97 items. The LGMD-HI is a disease-specific, patient-reported outcome measure designed in compliance with published FDA guidelines. Purpose: The study identified different patterns of symptom burden and posttraumatic growth (PTG) among patients with cancer and to explored the effects of sociodemographic, disease-related, and family resilience factors, which could provide reference for the development of personalized nursing measures. Methods: A questionnaire survey was conducted with 329 patients with cancer who were undergoing treatment. Latent profile analysis (LPA) was used to explore the patterns of symptom burden and PTG among patients with cancer, and multiple logistic regression analysis was used to explore the influencing factors of different patterns. Results: Based on the fit indicators of LPA, a three-class pattern model of posttraumatic responses was shown to be optimal, including resisting, struggling, and growth groups. In the resisting group (34.34%), patients reported low symptom burden and low PTG; in the struggling group (19.15%), patients showed a high symptom burden and moderate PTG; in the growth group (46.51%), patients showed low symptom burden and high PTG. Moreover, patients with cancer with high levels of family resilience were more likely to fall into the struggling and growth groups. Specifically, those with lower scores in the optimistic attitude and higher scores in the family and social support dimension of family resilience were more likely to fall into the struggling group, whereas those with lower scores in the transcendence and spiritual belief dimensions of family resilience were more likely to fall into the resisting group. Additionally, patients with at least three children were more likely to fall into the struggling group. Conclusions: This study showed heterogeneity in symptom burden and PTG patterns among patients with cancer. Patients’ growth must include both psychological growth and the mitigated symptom burden. Aims: To elicit experiences of patients, family caregivers, and healthcare professionals in intermediate care units (IMCUs) in an academic medical centre in Baltimore, MD related to the challenges and intricacies of multimorbidity management to inform development of a multimorbidity symptom management toolkit. Design: Experience‐based co‐design. Methods: Between July and October 2021, patients aged 55 years and older with multimorbidity admitted to IMCUs at an academic medical centre in Baltimore, Maryland, USA were recruited and interviewed in person. Interdisciplinary healthcare professionals working in the IMCU were interviewed virtually. Participants were asked questions about their role in recognizing and treating symptoms, factors affecting the quality of life, symptom burden and trajectory over time, and strategies that have and have not worked for managing symptoms. An inductive thematic analysis approach was used for analysis. Results: Twenty‐three interviews were conducted: 9 patients, 2 family caregivers, and 12 healthcare professionals. Patients' mean age was 67.5 (±6.5) years, over half (n = 5) were Black or Hispanic, and the average number of comorbidities was 3.67. Five major themes that affect symptom management emerged: (1) the patient–provider relationship; (2) open and honest communication; (3) accessibility of resources during hospitalization and at discharge; (4) caregiver support, training, and education; and (5) care coordination and follow‐up care. Conclusion: Patients, caregivers, and healthcare professionals often have similar goals but different priorities for multimorbidity management. It is imperative to identify shared priorities and target holistic interventions that consider patient and caregiver experiences to improve outcomes. Implications for the Profession and/or Patient Care and Impact: This paper addresses the paucity of research related to the shared experience of disease trajectory and symptom management for people living with multimorbidity. We found that patients, caregivers, and healthcare professionals often have similar goals but different care and communication priorities. Understanding differing priorities will help better design interventions to support symptom management so people with multimorbidity can have the best possible quality of life. Background: Malignant pleural effusion (MPE) affects up to 15% of patients with malignancy, and the prevalence is increasing. Non-expandable lung (NEL) complicates MPE in up to 30% of cases. However, it is not known if patients with malignant pleural effusion and NEL are more symptomatic in activities of daily living compared to patients with MPE with expandable lung. Methods: This was an observational study on consecutively recruited patients with MPE from our pleural clinic. Before thoracentesis, patients completed patient-reported outcomes on cancer symptoms (ESAS), health-related quality of life (5Q-5D-5L), and dyspnoea scores. Following thoracentesis, patients scored dyspnoea relief and symptoms during thoracentesis. Data on focused lung ultrasound and pleural effusion biochemistry were collected. The non-expandable lung diagnosis was made by pleural experts based on radiological and clinical information. Results: We recruited 43 patients, including 12 with NEL (28%). The NEL cohort resembled those from previous studies concerning ultrasonography, pleural fluid biochemistry, and fewer cases with high volume thoracentesis. Patients with and without NEL were comparable concerning baseline demography. The 5Q-5D-5L utility scores were 0.836 (0.691–0.906) and 0.806 (0.409–0.866), respectively, for patients with and without NEL. We observed no between-group differences in symptom burden or health-related quality of life. Conclusion: While the presence of NEL affects the clinical management of recurrent MPE, the presence of NEL seems not to affect patients' overall symptom burden in patients with MPE. Use of palliative care interventions in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) has increased in recent years and inclusion criteria used to identify patients with COPD appropriate for palliative care vary widely. We evaluated the inclusion criteria to identify ways to improve enrollment opportunities for patients with COPD. To determine inclusion criteria used to select patients with COPD for palliative care trials. A systematic review was conducted to determine criteria used to select patients with COPD for palliative care randomized controlled trials. A narrative synthesis was conducted for all trials. Inclusion criteria were highly heterogeneous. Most studies (n = 11, 79%) used a combination of criteria to identify patients with COPD. Commonly used criteria included hospitalization for an acute exacerbation of COPD (n = 8, 57%), home supplemental oxygen use (n = 8, 57%), and spirometry values confirming COPD (n = 6, 43%). Three studies (21.4%) used Modified Medical Research Council score and two studies (21%) used physician prognosis or a performance scale. The most common criteria, a hospitalization for acute exacerbation of COPD or supplemental oxygen use at home, both have the benefit of selecting patients who have a higher symptom burden or higher healthcare utilization who might therefore benefit more from palliative care. By describing the landscape and variability of previously used inclusion criteria, this article serves as a resource for clinicians and researchers. To describe the baseline symptom burden(SB) experienced by patients(pts) with recurrent ovarian cancer(ROC) prior and associations with progression free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS). We analysed baseline SB reported by pts. with platinum resistant/refractory ROC (PRR-ROC) or potentially‑platinum sensitive ROC receiving their third or greater line of chemotherapy (PPS-ROC≥3) enrolled in the Gynecologic Cancer InterGroup - Symptom Benefit Study (GCIG-SBS) using the Measure of Ovarian Symptoms and Treatment concerns (MOST). The severity of baseline symptoms was correlated with PFS and OS. The 948 pts. reported substantial baseline SB. Almost 80% reported mild to severe pain, and 75% abdominal symptoms. Shortness of breath was reported by 60% and 90% reported fatigue. About 50% reported moderate to severe anxiety, and 35% moderate to severe depression. Most (89%) reported 1 or more symptoms as moderate or severe, 59% scored 6 or more symptoms moderate or severe, and 46% scored 9 or more symptoms as moderate or severe. Higher SB was associated with significantly shortened PFS and OS; five symptoms had OS hazard ratios larger than 2 for both moderate and severe symptom cut-offs (trouble eating, vomiting, indigestion, loss of appetite, and nausea; p < 0.001). Pts with ROC reported high SB prior to starting palliative chemotherapy, similar among PRR-ROC and PPS-ROC≥3. High SB was strongly associated with early progression and death. SB should be actively managed and used to stratify patients in clinical trials. Social determinants of health (SDOH) are structural factors that yield health inequities. Within the context of cancer, these inequities include screening rates and survival rates, as well as higher symptom burden during and after treatment. While pain is one of the most frequently reported symptoms, the relationship between SDOHs and cancer pain is not well understood. The purpose of this study is to describe and synthesize the published research that has evaluated the relationships between SDOH and cancer pain. A systematic search of PubMed, CINAHL, and Embase was conducted to identify studies in which cancer pain and SDOH were described. In all, 20 studies met the inclusion criteria. In total, 14 studies reported a primary aim related to SDOH and cancer pain. Demographic variables including education or income were used most frequently. Six specific measurements were utilized to measure SDOH, such as the acculturation scale, the composite measure of zip codes for poverty level and blight prevalence, or the segregation index. Among the five domains of SDOH based on Healthy People 2030, social and community was the most studied, followed by economic stability, and education access and quality. The neighborhood and built environment domain was the least studied. Despite increasing attention to SDOH, the majority of published studies use single-dimension variables derived from demographic data to evaluate the relationships between SDOH and cancer pain. Future research is needed to explore the intersectionality of SDOH domains and their impact on cancer pain. The results of prior research concerning the effects of repeated concussions have been mixed. The aim of this study was to evaluate how concussion outcomes and presentation changed within patients who were evaluated at a concussion specialty clinic multiple times with a concussion. Subjects included 202 patients (54% male) aged 10–21 years (M = 13.17) who presented to a specialty concussion clinic for two and three concussions (77% sport-related) and were followed through formal clearance. First, growth curve models were estimated to determine recovery time and initial symptom burden across the multiple injuries. Second, covariates were added to these models to evaluate which demographic, risk factor, or injury variables predicted any change that did occur in evaluation or outcome variables. Models indicated that each subsequent concussion linearly resulted in significantly fewer days to recovery (-4.62 days, p < 0.047) across three concussions, and significantly lower (and linear) symptom scores on the post-concussion symptom scale (PCSS) (-2.16, p = 0.05). More severe presentation (i.e., days to recovery; higher symptom score) was significantly associated (-.62, p = 0.005) with greater improvement in recovery time (-.62, p = 0.005) and symptom burden (-.56, p < 0.001) at subsequent injuries. No covariates were significantly associated with improvement (or lack thereof) at subsequent injuries. This study adds to evidence suggesting multiple injuries is not associated with protracted recovery at subsequent injuries, in the context of treatment and full clearance for each injury at a multi-disciplinary clinic. Objective: The Interpersonal Theory of Suicide (ITS) could help identify differences in groups of suicidal adolescents and inform treatment. Method: Latent Profile Analysis (LPA) using thwarted belongingness (TB), perceived burdensomeness (PB), hopelessness, and capability was conducted on data from an at‐risk clinical sample (N = 500). The ITS prediction that changes in TB and PB are associated with changes in suicidal ideation was tested using admission and discharge data. Results: Latent Profile Analysis identified three profiles with increasing complexity and severity on ITS factors. The profiles were labelled low‐severity (7.6% of participants), moderate‐severity (45.2%), and high‐severity (47.2%). ITS predictions were partially supported for the full sample and only for the high‐severity and moderate‐severity subgroups, whereby changes in TB were significantly associated with changes in suicidal ideation over the course of treatment. However, changes in PB were only significant in the moderate‐severity subgroup, and none of the ITS predictions were supported in the low‐severity subgroup. Additionally, effect sizes for changes in TB and PB were modest in all analyses. Conclusions: Our findings highlight the importance reducing low belongingness in youth, which is a component of all supported interventions of youth suicide prevention. However, given the modest association of changes in ITS variables had with changes in suicidal ideation, it may be fruitful to elaborate on the relative importance on types of low belongingness or include other non‐ITS variables. Objective: Previous research on psychotherapy treatment response has mainly focused on outpatients or clinical trial data which may have low ecological validity regarding naturalistic inpatient samples. To reduce treatment failures by proactively screening for patients at risk of low treatment response, gain more knowledge about risk factors and to evaluate treatments, accurate insights about predictors of treatment response in naturalistic inpatient samples are needed. Methods: We compared the performance of different machine learning algorithms in predicting treatment response, operationalized as a substantial reduction in symptom severity as expressed in the Patient Health Questionnaire Anxiety and Depression Scale. To achieve this goal, we used different sets of variables--(a) demographics, (b) physical indicators, (c) psychological indicators and (d) treatment- related variables-- in a naturalistic inpatient sample (N = 723) to specify their joint and unique contribution to treatment success. Results: There was a strong link between symptom severity at baseline and post- treatment (R2 = .32). When using all available variables, both machine learning algorithms outperformed the linear regressions and led to an increment in predictive performance of R2 = .12. Treatment- related variables were the most predictive, followed psychological indicators. Physical indicators and demographics were negligible. Conclusions: Treatment response in naturalistic inpatient settings can be predicted to a considerable degree by using baseline indicators. Regularization via machine learning algorithms leads to higher predictive performances as opposed to including nonlinear and interaction effects. Background: Myelofibrosis (MF) is a clonal Philadelphia chromosome negative myeloproliferative neoplasm (Ph‐MPN). MF is featured by an inflammatory condition that can also drive the progression of disease. Ruxolitinib (ruxo) is the‐first‐in‐class Jak1/2 inhibitor approved for treatment of MF, proved to reduce spleen volume and decrease symptom burden. In various malignancies neutrophil‐to‐lymphocyte ratio (NLR) has been indicated as predictor of progression free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS). NLR might reflect the balance between systemic inflammation and immunity and is emerging as a prognostic biomarker in several neoplasms, including the hematological ones. Methods: We analyzed a cohort of 140 MF patients treated with ruxo to validate baseline NLR (as a continuous variable and as a cut‐off 2) as predictor of OS and of ruxo treatment discontinuation. Results: We found that both baseline NLR as a continuous variable [HR 0.8 (95% CI: 0.7–0.9) (p =.006)] and NLR (<2 vs. ≥2) [HR 3.4 (95% CI: 1.6–7.0) (p =.001)] were significantly associated with OS. Censoring for patients undergone allotransplant, baseline NLR <2 was predictive of an earlier ruxo any‐other‐cause discontinuation [HR 3.7 (95%CI 1.7–8.3) (p <.001)]. Introduction/Purpose: There is a well-established association between preexisting depression/anxiety and greater postconcussion symptom burden, but the potential impact of antidepressant medications has not been fully explored. The primary objective of this study was to compare preinjury/baseline and postinjury concussion symptomscores and neurocognitive performance of athletes on antidepressant medications, both with healthy controls and with those with depression/anxiety not on antidepressants. Methods: This is a cross-sectional study using data collected from 49,270 junior and high school athletes from computerized neurocognitive assessments (Immediate Post-Concussion Assessment and Cognitive Test [ImPACT]) administered between 2009 and 2018 held by the Massachusetts Concussion Management Coalition. The main outcome measures were symptom scores and neurocognitive performance measures, all of which were assessed both at baseline and postinjury. Statistical analysis included analysis of variance and Tukey pairwise comparisons for continuous variables and Fisher's exact test for categorical variables. Multivariate regression models were used to adjust for potential confounding variables. Results: Both at baseline and postinjury, athletes with depression/anxiety had mean total symptom scores that were more than double that of healthy controls regardless of antidepressant use. Although there were no significant differences in neurocognitive performance at baseline, depression/anxiety was associated with small but significant decreases in postinjury visual memory and visual motor scores. Conclusions: Both at baseline and after sustaining a concussion, young athletes with depression/anxiety experience significantly greater symptom burden compared with healthy controls regardless of antidepressant use. When newly diagnosed with inflammatory arthritis (IA), acquiring self-management skills is beneficial, to enhance quality of life. The personal beliefs and mental representations patients hold about their illness, known as illness perception, significantly influence the development of these skills. Recognizing characteristics that affect illness perception is key to identifying patients requiring additional support for the development of self-management skills. This study aimed at identifying the sociodemographic and clinical characteristics associated with a negative illness perception. This cross-sectional study was based on survey data from patients diagnosed for ≤ 2 years. The Brief Illness Perception Questionnaire (B-IPQ) was used to measure illness perception. After psychometric testing, we divided the B-IPQ into two domains: (1) a control domain and (2) a consequence domain. We performed logistic regression analyses with multiple imputations. A total of 1,360 patients (61% females) were included. Among them, 64%, 20%, and 16% were diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis (PsA) and axial spondyloarthritis (axSpA), respectively. Younger patients with lower socioeconomic status, a diagnosis of PsA or axSpA, high disease activity (OR 3.026, CI 2.208;4.147), severe physical disability (OR 4.147. CI 2.883;6.007), severe pain (OR 3.034, CI 1.991;4.622), and severe fatigue (OR 2.612, CI 1.942;3.513) were significantly more likely to report having a negative illness perception. Younger patients with a higher symptom burden, increased disease activity, lower socioeconomic status, and a diagnosis of PsA or axSpA may require additional attention and support in rheumatology clinical practice to aid in the development of their self-management skills. Objectives: Patients with advanced colorectal cancer (CRC) have multiple concurrent physical and psychological symptoms. This study aimed to explore the relationship between anxiety, depression, and symptom burden in advanced CRC. Methods: A multicenter cross‐sectional study was conducted in 10 cancer centers from geographically and economically diverse sites in China. A total of 454 patients with advanced CRC completed the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale and the MD Anderson Symptom Inventory. Multiple regression analysis was applied to explore the relationship between anxiety, depression and symptom burden. Results: About one‐third of the patients showed symptoms of anxiety or depression. Patients with anxiety or depression reported significantly higher symptom burden than those without (p < 0.001). Patients with anxiety or depression reported a higher proportion of moderate‐to‐severe (MS) symptom number than those without (p < 0.001). About 52% of the patients with anxiety or depression reported at least three MS symptoms. The prevalence of MS symptoms was ranging from 7.3% (shortness of breath) to 22% (disturbed sleep), and in patients with anxiety or depression was 2–10 times higher than in those without (p < 0.001). Disease stage (β = −2.55, p = 0.003), anxiety (β = 15.33, p < 0.001), and depression (β = 13.63, p < 0.001) were associated with higher symptom burden. Conclusions: Anxiety and depression in patients with advanced cancer correlated with higher symptom burden. Simple Summary: Despite advances in head and neck cancer control, survivors encounter significant difficulties accessing survivorship care in the USA. We conducted a qualitative study aimed to better understand their experiences and identify unmet needs. Fifteen long-term head and neck cancer survivors were interviewed, where themes around chronic emotional distress, fatigue, and disruptions in daily life emerged across the focus group. Secondary issues included sleep problems, cognitive difficulties, and other health conditions. Surprisingly, physical symptoms like pain and changes in appetite were less discussed. These findings underscore the need for tailored holistic multi-dimensional cancer survivorship programs that address physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being. The study highlights the importance of increased awareness and comprehensive long-term support to prioritize and enhance quality of life for the head and neck cancer survivorship community. Improved rates of cancer control have increased the head and neck cancer survivor population. Cancer survivorship clinics are not widely available in the USA, and longitudinal supportive care for patients undergoing multimodal therapy has not advanced at a pace commensurate with improvements in cancer control. Consequently, a large head and neck cancer survivor population whose quality of life may be chronically and/or permanently diminished presently exists. This lack of awareness perpetuates under-recognition and under-investigation, leaving survivors' (mostly detrimental) experiences largely uncharted. We conducted a qualitative exploration of survivors' experiences, aiming to unpack the profound impact of late systemic symptoms on daily life, encompassing work, relationships, and self-identity in the head and neck cancer survivor community. The study included 15 remitted head and neck survivors, ≥12 months from their final treatment, who participated in semi-structured interviews conducted by a medical oncologist. Data analysis comprised qualitative thematic analysis, specifically inductive hierarchical linear modeling, enriched by a deductive approach of anecdotal clinical reporting. Results highlighted that 43.36% of all quotation material discussed in the interviews pertained to chronic emotion disturbance with significant implications for other domains of life. A central symptom cluster comprised impairments in mood/emotions, daily activity, and significant fatigue. Dysfunction in sleep, other medical conditions, and cognitive deficits comprised a secondary cluster. Physical dysfunctionality, encompassing pain, appetite, and eating, and alterations in experienced body temperature, constituted a tertiary cluster, and perhaps were surprisingly the least discussed symptom burden among head and neck cancer survivors. Symptoms causing heightened long-term survivor burden may be considered epiphenomenal to central physical dysfunctionality, albeit being presently the least represented in cancer survivor care programs. Moving forward, the development of targeted and multi-dimensional treatment programs that encompass physical, psychosocial, and spiritual domains are needed to increase clinical specificity and effective holistic long-term solutions that will foster a more compassionate and informed future of care for the cancer survivorship community. The clinical application of Pharmacogenomics (PGx) has improved patient safety. However, comprehensive PGx testing has not been widely adopted in clinical practice, and significant opportunities exist to further optimize PGx in cancer care. This systematic review and meta‐analysis aim to evaluate the safety outcomes of reported PGx‐guided strategies (Analysis 1) and identify well‐studied emerging pharmacogenomic variants that predict severe toxicity and symptom burden (Analysis 2) in patients with cancer. We searched MEDLINE, EMBASE, CENTRAL, clinicaltrials.gov, and International Clinical Trials Registry Platform from inception to January 2023 for clinical trials or comparative studies evaluating PGx strategies or unconfirmed pharmacogenomic variants. The primary outcomes were severe adverse events (SAE; ≥ grade 3) or symptom burden with pain and vomiting as defined by trial protocols and assessed by trial investigators. We calculated pooled overall relative risk (RR) and 95% confidence interval (95%CI) using random effects models. PROSPERO, registration number CRD42023421277. Of 6811 records screened, six studies were included for Analysis 1, 55 studies for Analysis 2. Meta‐analysis 1 (five trials, 1892 participants) showed a lower absolute incidence of SAEs with PGx‐guided strategies compared to usual therapy, 16.1% versus 34.0% (RR = 0.72, 95%CI 0.57–0.91, p = 0.006, I2 = 34%). Meta‐analyses 2 identified nine medicine(class)‐variant pairs of interest across the TYMS, ABCB1, UGT1A1, HLA‐DRB1, and OPRM1 genes. Application of PGx significantly reduced rates of SAEs in patients with cancer. Background: Long-term neurological conditions include multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's-related diseases, and motor neurone disease. National and international guidelines recommend a palliative approach for advancing neurological disease, but there is little research describing and comparing the palliative care needs of these patients side by side. Objective: The aim of this study was to describe and compare the symptom burden and psychological distress of patients with multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's-related diseases, and motor neurone disease. Design: A cross-sectional secondary analysis of the OPTCARE Neuro trial data was performed. Setting/Subjects: Recruitment was from seven sites across the United Kingdom. Patients aged 18 years or older, severely affected by advanced stages of multiple sclerosis or Parkinson's-related diseases or any stage of motor neurone disease, with an unresolved symptom, and one other issue despite usual care were eligible. Measurements: Baseline demographics, Integrated Palliative care Outcome Scale (IPOS) Neuro, and Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) results were analyzed. Results: Data from 348 participants were analyzed. The mean IPOS Neuro-S24 score was 27, with no statistical difference found between groups (p = 0.341). The most common symptoms were poor mobility (68.5%), problems using legs (63%), and fatigue (34.8%). The HADS revealed that a quarter of participants met the criteria for a diagnosis of anxiety and depression. Conclusions: Multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's-related disease, and motor neurone disease patients who were eligible for the OPTCARE Neuro trial have unmet needs in the form of distressing physical and psychological symptoms. It is unclear how to address these needs. The answer likely lies in a collaborative approach between neurology, palliative care, psychology, and specialized allied health professionals. Palliative cancer care patients may live for a long time, but malnutrition worsens the prognosis. Parenteral nutrition (PN) is suitable for replenishing a calorie deficit, but its advantages and tolerance late in the cancer trajectory are debated. We examined symptom development in hospitalized patients with and without PN. A total of 21 palliative cancer care patients receiving PN and 155 palliative cancer care patients not receiving PN during hospitalization in a specialized unit were retrospectively compared. We studied symptom intensity at admission, symptom relief during the hospital stay, and survival. The patients had locally advanced or metastatic cancer, a mean age of 70 years, and their median ECOG performance status was III. Symptom burden at admission was similar in the compared groups. Symptom relief during hospitalization was also similar. However, patients already on PN at admission reported more nausea and patients receiving PN during hospitalization reported better nausea relief compared to patients not receiving this intervention. Overall median survival was less than two months and similar in the compared groups. Based on a limited number of observations and a suboptimal study design, we were not able to demonstrate an increased symptom burden for palliative cancer care patients receiving PN late in the disease trajectory. Background: Distressing symptoms are common in advanced cancer. Medicinal cannabinoids are commonly prescribed for a variety of symptoms. There is little evidence to support their use for most indications in palliative care. This study aims to assess a 1:20 delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol/cannabidiol (THC/CBD) cannabinoid preparation in the management of symptom distress in patients with advanced cancer undergoing palliative care. Methods and design: One hundred and fifty participants will be recruited across multiple sites in Queensland, Australia. A teletrial model will facilitate the recruitment of patients outside of major metropolitan areas. The study is a pragmatic, multicenter, randomised, placebo-controlled, two-arm trial of escalating doses of an oral 1:20 THC/CBD medicinal cannabinoid preparation (10 mg THC:200 mg CBD/mL). It will compare the efficacy and safety outcomes of a titrated dose range of 2.5 mg THC/50mgCBD to 30 mg THC/600 mg CBD per day against a placebo. There is a 2-week patient-determined titration phase, to reach a dose that achieves symptom relief or intolerable side effects, with a further 2 weeks of assessment on the final dose. The primary objective is to assess the effect of escalating doses of a 1:20 THC/CBD medicinal cannabinoid preparation against placebo on change in total symptom distress score, with secondary objectives including establishing a patient-determined effective dose, the effect on sleep quality and overall quality of life. Some patients will be enrolled in a sub-study which will more rigorously evaluate the effect on sleep. Discussion: MedCan-3 is a high-quality, adequately powered, placebo-controlled trial which will help demonstrate the utility of a THC:CBD 1:20 oral medicinal cannabis product in reducing total symptom distress in this population. Secondary outcomes may lead to new hypotheses regarding medicinal cannabis' role in particular symptoms or in particular cancers. The sleep sub-study will test the feasibility of using actigraphy and the Insomnia Severity Index (ISI) in this cohort. This will be the first large-scale palliative care randomised clinical trial to utilise the teletrial model in Australia. Background: Variation in the provision of care and outcomes in the last months of life by cancer and non-cancer conditions is poorly understood. Aims: (1) To describe patient conditions, symptom burden, practical problems, service use and dissatisfaction with end-of-life care for older adults based on the cause of death. (2) To explore factors related to these variables focussing on the causes of death. Design: Secondary analysis of pooled data using cross-sectional mortality follow-back surveys from three studies: QUALYCARE; OPTCare Elderly; and International Access, Right, and Empowerment 1. Setting/participants: Data reported by bereaved relatives of people aged ⩾75 years who died of cancer, cardiovascular disease, respiratory disease, dementia or neurological disease. Results: The pooled dataset contained 885 responses. Overall, service use and circumstances surrounding death differed significantly across causes of death. Bereaved relatives reported symptom severity from moderate to overwhelming in over 30% of cases for all causes of death. Across all causes of death, 28%–38% of bereaved relatives reported some level of dissatisfaction with care. Patients with cardiovascular disease and dementia experienced lower symptom burden and dissatisfaction than those with cancer. The absence of a reliable key health professional was consistently associated with higher symptom burden (p = 0.002), practical problems (p = 0.001) and dissatisfaction with care (p = 0.001). Conclusions: We showed different trajectories towards death depending on cause. Objective The aim of the study is to determine whether the use of labor analgesia had a higher risk of pelvic floor functional problems after delivery. Study Design All primiparas who delivered at our hospital between June 2019 and May 2020 were enrolled in the study. They were divided into two groups according to their choices: delivery with labor analgesia (analgesia group, n = 76), and delivery without labor analgesia (nonanalgesia group, n = 78). The primary outcome of the study was to test the pelvic floor function by electromyography (EMG) at postpartum 6 to 8 weeks. Participants also completed questionnaires including Pelvic Floor Distress Inventory (PFDI-20), International Consultation on Incontinent Questionnaire-Short Form (ICIQ-SF), and Overactive Bladder Symptom Score (OABSS) at postpartum 6 to 8 weeks. Results Primiparas in the analgesia group experienced longer first and second stages of labor (p < 0.05), and had significantly higher PFDI-20 scores at postpartum 6 to 8 weeks (p < 0.05). But the differences in ICIQ-SF, OABSS scores, and Pelvic Organ Prolapse Quantification (POP-Q) system between the two groups were not significant (p > 0.05). No statistically significant difference was found in class II and class I muscles, scores of pretest resting baseline, and posttest resting baseline between primiparas with or without labor analgesia (p > 0.05). Conclusion Our results strongly confirmed that labor analgesia did not increase the risk of pelvic floor dysfunction up to 6 to 8 weeks after delivery, although symptom burden might be increased after labor analgesia. Background: An increasing number of epidemiological studies assessing the incidence, prevalence and severity of injury in youth female sport are available. However, no study has sought to synthesise the current evidence base across all youth female sport. As such, a systematic review and meta-analysis of injury in this cohort is necessary to understand the diversity of injury and its associated burden between sports in addition to identifying the density of research available. Objective: To conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis of epidemiological data of injuries in youth female athletes with particular attention to injury incidence, mean days lost and injury burden. Methods: Searches were performed in PubMed, EBSCO (SPORTDiscus with Full Text MEDLINE, APA PsycINFO, CINAHL, Academic Search Complete) and Cochrane databases. Studies were considered if they reported time-loss injury incidence or prevalence in youth female (≤ 19 years old) athletes. Study quality and risk of bias were assessed using STROBE-SIIS extension, Newcastle-Ottawa Scale, and funnel plots, respectively. Injury incidence and burden rate data were modelled using a mixed-effect Poisson regression model. Days lost data were modelled using a generalised linear mixed model. Results: Thirty-two studies were included. The overall incidence rate, mean days lost per injury, and burden rate were 4.4 injuries per 1000 h (95% CI 3.3–5.9), 10 days (95% CI 6–15), and 46 days per 1000 h (95% CI 23–92), respectively. Forty percent of athletes sustained at least one time-loss injury. Competitive level was a significant moderator of match and training injury incidence, with elite youth athletes presenting greater pooled injury incidence estimates than non-elite athletes (p = 0.0315 and p = 0.0047, respectively). The influence of moderators on days lost and injury burden could not be determined due to an insufficient number of studies for analysis. Conclusion: Despite a broad inclusion criterion, there is limited injury surveillance research available across youth female sport. Outside of soccer, little research density is evidenced with single studies available in popular team sports such as Australian football and rugby union. Insufficient study numbers reporting mean days lost and injury burden data were available for analysis, and pooled days lost data could only be estimated for soccer. This highlights a need for future research to report days lost data alongside injury number and exposure so burden can be calculated and the full risk of injury to youth female athletes can be identified. Background: Limited information is available about patterns of healthcare utilization for prevalent gastrointestinal conditions and their link to symptom burden. Aim: To identify patterns of healthcare utilization among outpatients with highly prevalent gastrointestinal conditions and define the link between healthcare utilization, symptom burden, and disease group. Methods: We randomly selected patients from the gastroenterology outpatient clinic at Princess Alexandra Hospital who had chronic gastrointestinal conditions such as constipation-predominant irritable bowel syndrome (IBS-C, n = 101), diarrhea-predominant IBS (IBS-D, n = 101), mixed IBS (n = 103), inflammatory bowel disease with acute flare (n = 113), IBD in remission (n = 103), and gastroesophageal reflux disease (n = 102). All had presented at least 12 months before and had a 12-month follow-up after the index consultation. Healthcare utilization data were obtained from state-wide electronic medical records over a 24-month period. Intensity of gastrointestinal symptoms was measured using the validated Structured Assessment of Gastrointestinal Symptoms (SAGIS) Scale. Latent class analyses (LCA) based on healthcare utilization were used to identify distinct patterns of healthcare utilization among these patients. Results: LCA revealed four distinct healthcare utilization patterns across all diagnostic groups: Group A: Emergency department utilizers, Group B: Outpatient focused care utilizers, Group C: Inpatient care utilizers and Group D: Inpatient care and emergency department utilizers. LCA groups with high emergency utilization were characterized by high gastrointestinal symptom burden at index consultation regardless of condition (Mean (standard deviation)) SAGIS score Group A: 24.63 (± 14.11), Group B: 19.18 (± 15.77), Group C: 22.48 (± 17.42), and Group D: 17.59 (± 13.74, p < 0.05). Purpose: Hematopoietic stem cell transplant (HSCT) is an intense form of treatment, resulting in major symptom burden but can prove curative. The quality of life (QOL) is a major endpoint for these patients as the survival rate in them has improved over time. The aim of the study is to assess the QOL and symptom burden of hematological malignancy patients at admission to hospital for HSCT, at 1 month and at 3 months following HSCT. Methods: This prospective observational study was done on hematological malignancy patients who were admitted for HSCT in a regional cancer center. The study subjects were assessed by the Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy–Bone Marrow Transplant Scale (FACT–BMT Scale), Edmonton Symptom Assessment Scale-revised (r-ESAS), and Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scale—21 Items (DASS-21) at the time of hospital admission for transplantation, on day 30 (~ 1 month) and day100 (~ 3 months) of transplantation. Results: A total of 68 patients were included in this study. FACT–BMT scores have decreased from baseline (F0) to the first follow-up (F1) and then increased in the third follow-up (F2). The maximum r-ESAS mean score was for tiredness among all other symptoms at F0 as well as at F1 and at F2. The DASS 21 scores for depression, anxiety, and stress were maximum during F1 and minimum during F2. Aim: To identify and appraise the quality of evidence of transitional care interventions on quality of life in lung cancer patients. Background: Quality of life is a strong predictor of survival. The transition from hospital to home is a high‐risk period for patients' readmission and death, which seriously affect their quality of life. Design: Systematic review and meta‐analysis. Methods: The PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, Web of Science and CINAHL databases were searched from inception to 22 October 2022. The primary outcome was quality of life. Statistical analysis was conducted using Review Manager 5.4, results were expressed as standard mean difference (SMD) with a 95% confidence interval (CI). The risk of bias of the included studies was assessed using the Cochrane risk of bias assessment tool. This study was complied with PRISMA guidelines and previously registered in PROSPERO (CRD42023429464). Results: Fourteen randomized controlled trials were included consisting of a total of 1700 participants, and 12 studies were included in the meta‐analysis. It was found that transitional care interventions significantly improved quality of life (SMD = 0.21, 95% CI: 0.02 to 0.40, p =.03) and helped reduce symptoms (SMD = −0.65, 95% CI: −1.13 to −0.18, p =.007) in lung cancer patients, but did not significantly reduce anxiety and depression, and the effect on self‐efficacy was unclear. Conclusions: This study shows that transitional care interventions can improve quality of life and reduce symptoms in patients, and that primarily educational interventions based on symptom management theory appeared to be more effective. But, there was no statistically significant effect on anxiety and depression. Objective: To determine whether an investigational head–neck cooling device, Pro2cool, can better reduce symptom severity compared with standard postconcussion care in early adolescent athletes after a sports-related concussion. Design: Prospective, longitudinal, randomized trial design conducted over a 28-day period. Setting: Six pediatric medical centers in Ohio and Michigan. Participants: The study enrolled 167 male and female 12- to 19-year-old athletes who experienced a sports-related concussion within 8 days of study enrollment and registering a Sports Concussion Assessment Tool 5 (SCAT5) composite score.7. Interventions: Pro2cool, an investigational head–neck cooling therapy device, was applied at 2 postinjury time points compared with postconcussion standard of care only. Main Outcome Measures: Baseline SCAT5 composite symptom severity scores were determined for all subjects. Sports Concussion Assessment Tool 5 scores for concussed athletes receiving cooling treatment were analyzed across 6 independent postenrollment time points compared with subjects who did not receive cooling therapy and only standard care. Adverse reactions and participate demographics were also compared. Results: Athletes who received Pro2cool cooling therapy (n 5 79) experienced a 14.4% greater reduction in SCAT5 symptom severity scores at the initial visit posttreatment, a 25.5% greater reduction at the 72-hour visit posttreatment, and a 3.4% greater reduction at the 10-day visit compared with subjects receiving only standard care (n 5 88). Overall, 36 adverse events (increased blood pressure, decreased pulse, and dizziness) were reported, with 13 events associated with the device, of which 3 were classified as moderate in severity. Conclusions: This study demonstrates the efficacy and safety of head and neck cooling for the management of concussion symptoms in adolescent athletes of an age group for which little to no prior data are available. AbstractObjectiveMethodsResultsConclusionThis study aimed to examine physicians’ and patients’ perceptions regarding symptom burden and impact in women experiencing natural vasomotor symptoms (nVMS) or vasomotor symptoms induced by endocrine therapy for breast cancer (iVMS).The cross-sectional survey based on real-world clinical consultations was conducted in the USA and five European countries. Obstetrician–gynecologists, primary-care physicians and oncologists provided demographic and symptom data for patients experiencing VMS; patients optionally self-reported their experiences via questionnaires, including their symptom profile and work/activity burden through the Menopause Quality of Life (MENQOL) and Work Productivity and Activity Impairment (WPAI) tools.Physicians completed survey forms on 2451 consulting patients; patients completed 1029 questionnaires. nVMS and iVMS severity was significantly associated with the severity of mood symptoms and sleep disturbances (p < 0.0001). However, around half of the patients with mild nVMS/iVMS also experienced moderate–severe mood changes (55.4%/43.7%) or sleep disturbances (42.4%/40.4%). Presence of mood/sleep disturbances alongside nVMS increased MENQOL vasomotor scores (p = 0.004/p < 0.001). Presence of sleep disturbances increased WPAI activity impairment (p < 0.001) but mood changes did not. Background Athletes who are diagnosed with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are at increased risk of concussion compared to other athletes. Immediate Post-Concussion Assessment and Cognitive Testing (ImPACT) is a widely used concussion tool, but it relies on pre-injury baseline testing that can be affected by psychiatric conditions. This research aims to determine if there are differences in pre-injury testing composite scores in student-athletes with ADHD compared to those without ADHD diagnosis. Methods We obtained 11,563 pre-season ImPACT assessments of 7,454 student-athletes (ages: 12–22) from 2009 to 2019. After exclusions, there were 6,920 control and 276 ADHD subjects. Multivariable linear regression analyses compared the independent effect of ADHD on the six ImPACT composite score metrics with Bonferroni correction for multiple comparisons with a = 0.008. Results Univariate analyses indicated ADHD is associated with more symptoms as measured by the Post-Concussion Symptom Scale (PCSS) (β = 2.67, 95% CI: 1.47–3.87, p  < .0001) and worse Impulse Control scores (β = 0.93, 95% CI: 0.33–1.53, p  = .002). In multivariate analysis, this association was the same for symptom score (β = 2.48, 95% CI: 1.22–3.74, p  < .0001), but Impulse Control was not significantly different after multiple comparison adjustment (β = 0.87, 95% CI: 0.22–1.15, p  = .009). Conclusions The ADHD subjects reported worse symptoms at baseline and had worse Impulse Control in univariate analysis, but not multivariate analysis. Background: Data are lacking on patient‐reported outcomes (PRO) following cryoballoon ablation (CBA) versus radiofrequency ablation (RFA). We sought to evaluate QoL and clinical outcomes of cryoballoon pulmonary vein isolation only (CRYO‐PVI‐ONLY) versus RFA with PVI and posterior wall isolation (RF‐PVI+PWI) in a large prospective PRO registry. Methods: Patients who underwent AF ablation (2013–2016) at our institution were enrolled in an automated, prospectively maintained PRO registry. CRYO‐PVI‐ONLY patients were matched (1:1) with RF‐PVI+PWI patients based on age, gender, and type of AF (paroxysmal vs. persistent). QoL and clinical outcomes were assessed using PRO surveys at baseline and at 1‐year. The atrial fibrillation symptom severity scale (AFSSS) was the measure for QoL. Additionally, we assessed patient‐reported clinical improvement, arrhythmia recurrence, and AF burden (as indicated by AF frequency and duration scores). Results: A total of 296 patients were included (148 in each group, 72% paroxysmal). By PRO, a significant improvement in QoL was observed in the overall study population and was comparable between CRYO‐PVI‐ONLY and RF‐PVI+PWI (baseline median AFSSS of 11.5 and 11; reduced to 2 and 4 at 1 year, respectively; p = 0.44). Similarly, the proportion of patients who reported improvement in their overall QoL and AF related symptoms was high and similar between the study groups [92% (CRYO‐PVI‐ONLY) vs. 92.8% (RF‐PVI+PWI); p = 0.88]. Arrhythmia recurrence was significantly more common in the CRYO‐PVI‐ONLY group (39.7%) compared to RF‐PVI+PWI (27.7 %); p = 0.03. Comparable results were observed in paroxysmal and persistent AF. Conclusion: CRYO‐PVI‐ONLY and RF‐PVI+PWI resulted in comparable improvements in patient reported outcomes including QoL and AF burden; with RF‐PVI+PWI being more effective at reducing recurrences. Tremor is common with tacrolimus treatment and is linked with peak blood drug concentrations. We investigated the effect of switching from immediate-release tacrolimus (IR-TAC) to MeltDose prolonged-release tacrolimus (LCPT) on tremor in kidney transplant recipients experiencing tremor at therapeutic levels of IR-TAC. The Activities of Daily Living Subscale (ADL, range 0-48, lower = better) of the Essential Tremor Rating Scale was used to assess the effect of therapy change on speech, occupational impairment and social activities over a 12-month follow-up period. The study included 18 patients (mean age = 45.6 y, range 26-73; median (IQR) time from transplant = 1.1 y (0.6-1.5), with baseline IR-TAC trough concentrations (C 0) ranging from 4.2 to 9.4 ng/mL (mean C 0 = 6.7 ± 1.3 ng/mL). After the switch to LCPT, the mean ADL score improved from baseline 11.2 to 8.4 after 7 to 14 days (an 18% improvement, P <.001). This improvement was sustained after 3 months (ADL score = 5.0, 46% improvement vs baseline), 6 months (ADL score = 4.4, 48% improvement vs baseline), and 12 months (ADL score = 3.6, 63% improvement vs baseline); all P <.001. Despite a 40% reduction in LCPT daily doses (mean −1.9 mg/day compared to IR-TAC), the achieved C 0 was constant during the course of the 12-month observation (P =.755). The renal function remained stable after conversion (eGFR 12 months vs baseline = +1.1 mL/min/1.73 m2, 95% CI: −5.6 to +7.9). Background: Wireless pH monitoring allows for a definitive GERD diagnosis, which is essential for optimal medical or surgical management of the patient. However, there is no guideline recommendation on whether prolonged pH testing (72 or 96 h) provides additional benefit when compared to the standard 48-h testing. We aimed to assess whether prolonged pH monitoring diagnoses more patients with GERD, as well as compare the DeMeester score to acid exposure time as diagnostic criteria for GERD. Methods: This was a retrospective analysis of consecutive adult patients who underwent wireless esophageal pH monitoring between August 2018 and July 2021. The primary outcome was the additional diagnoses of GERD (predominant acid exposure pattern) in patients who underwent 48-h versus 96-h pH monitoring. Secondary outcomes included comparison of the DeMeester score to acid exposure time and internal agreement between the first and second 48-h blocks of a prolonged 96-h pH study. Results: When comparing 48-h versus 96-h pH testing, the prolonged monitoring group was more likely to have a predominant reflux pattern and thus be diagnosed with definitive GERD by elevated DeMeester score (58.8% vs. 40.8%, p = 0.003) or acid exposure time > 6% (44.7% vs. 32.4%, p = 0.039). For patients who underwent prolonged testing, the results of monitoring beyond 48 h led to a clinically meaningful change in study interpretation in 24.8% of patients. The study data from Days 3 to 4 yielded only a 56.6% agreement with the first 2 days. Conclusions: In patients undergoing extended pH monitoring, almost half were found to have an abnormal pH study after a normal study on Day 1. An additional 25% of patients had a change in study interpretation by extending the study beyond 48 h. STUDY QUESTION What is the relationship between sexual function, health-related quality of life (HRQoL), and laparoscopic surgery in individuals living with endometriosis? SUMMARY ANSWER A higher number of laparoscopic surgeries is significantly associated with poorer HRQoL and greater levels of sexual dysfunction in individuals with endometriosis. WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY Prior research indicates that endometriosis is associated with lowered HRQoL and sexual function and that these outcomes are influenced by endometriosis-related symptom profiles, medical, and surgical management. A limited number of studies have examined changes in sexual function in individuals with endometriosis following laparoscopic surgery or following repeated surgeries. STUDY DESIGN, SIZE, DURATION A cross-sectional community-based online survey was used to examine the relationships between sexual function, HRQoL, and laparoscopic surgery (n   =   210). PARTICIPANTS/MATERIALS, SETTING, METHODS Individuals with a self-reported diagnosis of endometriosis were recruited via online advertising through social media and gynaecology clinics. Endometriosis-specific data (e.g. diagnostic delay, symptom experience) was collected in addition to engagement with laparoscopic surgery, level of HRQoL (EuroQol-5 Dimension: EQ-5D-5L), and sexual function (Female Sexual Function Index: FSFI). Bivariate correlational analyses and hierarchical multiple regression were used to determine the associations between the variables of interest. MAIN RESULTS AND THE ROLE OF CHANCE Individuals with endometriosis have substantially poorer HRQoL in comparison to Australian normative samples, with greater levels of endometriosis-related symptom burden, distress, and pain significantly associated with lower levels of HRQoL. The mean FSFI score was suggestive of clinically significant female sexual dysfunction, with the lowest level of function noted in the domain of sexual pain and the highest level of function noted in the sexual satisfaction domain. A greater number of laparoscopic surgeries was significantly associated with poorer overall HRQoL and greater levels of sexual dysfunction. LIMITATIONS, REASONS FOR CAUTION The cross-sectional nature of the data precludes direct findings of causality and further longitudinal research is recommended. The information pertaining to engagement in laparoscopic surgery was self-report in nature and was not medically verified. WIDER IMPLICATIONS OF THE FINDINGS The study's findings highlight the pervasive impact of endometriosis on all domains of living, emphasizing the need to extend treatment planning beyond that of physical pain management alone. Early referral for assessment and management of sexual wellbeing is recommended prior to, and post-surgical intervention, with a focus on maintaining post-surgical changes, potentially reducing the need for multiple surgeries. Background Despite significant support system disruptions during the coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, little is known about the relationship between social support and symptom burden among older adults following COVID-19 hospitalization. Methods From a prospective cohort of 341 community-living persons aged ≥60 years hospitalized with COVID-19 between June 2020 and June 2021 who underwent follow-up at 1, 3, and 6 months after discharge, we identified 311 participants with ≥1 follow-up assessment. Social support prehospitalization was ascertained using a 5-item version of the Medical Outcomes Study Social Support Survey (range, 5–25), with low social support defined as a score ≤15. At hospitalization and each follow-up assessment, 14 physical symptoms were assessed using a modified Edmonton Symptom Assessment System inclusive of COVID-19-relevant symptoms. Mental health symptoms were assessed using Patient Health Questionnaire-4. Longitudinal associations between social support and physical and mental health symptoms, respectively, were evaluated through multivariable regression. Results Participants' mean age was 71.3 years (standard deviation, 8.5), 52.4% were female, and 34.2% were of Black race or Hispanic ethnicity. 11.8% reported low social support. Over the 6-month follow-up period, low social support was independently associated with higher burden of physical symptoms (adjusted rate ratio [aRR], 1.26; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.05–1.52), but not mental health symptoms (aRR, 1.14; 95% CI, 0.85–1.53). Conclusions Low social support is associated with greater physical, but not mental health, symptom burden among older survivors of COVID-19 hospitalization. Our findings suggest a potential need for social support screening and interventions to improve post-COVID-19 symptom management in this vulnerable group. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: Atopic dermatitis (AD) is characterized by intense itch and other symptoms that negatively impact quality of life (QoL). This study evaluates the effect of upadacitinib (an oral selective Janus kinase inhibitor) monotherapy on patient-reported outcomes (PROs) among adults and adolescents with moderate-to-severe AD over 16 weeks. Methods: This integrated analysis of the double-blind, placebo-controlled periods of phase 3 monotherapy clinical trials Measure Up 1 (NCT03569293) and Measure Up 2 (NCT03607422) assessed itch (Worst Pruritus Numerical Rating Scale [WP-NRS] and SCORing Atopic Dermatitis [SCORAD]), skin pain and symptom severity (AD Symptom Scale), symptom frequency (Patient-Oriented Eczema Measure), sleep (AD Impact Scale [ADerm-IS] and SCORAD), daily activities and emotional state (ADerm-IS), QoL (Dermatology Life Quality Index [DLQI] and Children's DLQI), mental health (Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale), and patient impressions (Patient Global Impression of Severity, Patient Global Impression of Change, and Patient Global Impression of Treatment). Results: Data from 1683 patients (upadacitinib 15 mg, n = 557; upadacitinib 30 mg, n = 567; placebo, n = 559) were analyzed. A greater proportion of patients receiving upadacitinib versus placebo experienced improvements in itch (≥ 4-point improvement on WP-NRS) by week 1 (upadacitinib 15 mg, 11.2%; upadacitinib 30 mg, 17.7%; placebo, 0.5%; P < 0.001), with response rates sustained through week 16 (upadacitinib 15 mg, 47.1%; upadacitinib 30 mg, 59.8%; placebo, 10.4%; P < 0.001). Improvements were similar for PROs assessing skin pain/symptoms, sleep, daily activities, QoL, emotional state, mental health, and patient impressions of disease severity and treatment. Responses generally improved rapidly (within 1–2 weeks), increased through weeks 4–6, and were maintained through week 16. Conclusions: Once-daily oral upadacitinib monotherapy improved response rates across PROs compared with placebo. Upadacitinib therapy resulted in rapid, sustained improvements in PROs measuring symptom burden and QoL in adults and adolescents with moderate-to-severe AD. These symptoms often make it difficult for patients to get adequate sleep. Patients with atopic dermatitis may also experience anxiety, depression, reduced self-confidence, social isolation, disruption to daily activities like school and work, and decreased quality of life. Many atopic dermatitis symptoms, including itch and psychological impact, are difficult for doctors to assess. Thus, it is important to consider patients' descriptions of their symptoms and quality of life, particularly when assessing treatment benefit. Upadacitinib is an orally administered drug approved to treat moderate-to-severe atopic dermatitis. We investigated how upadacitinib (15 mg or 30 mg) given once daily to adults and adolescents with moderate-to-severe atopic dermatitis in the Measure Up 1 and 2 clinical trials impacts their symptoms and quality of life over a 16-week period. We compared changes in patient-reported itch, pain, sleep, daily activities, emotional state, mental health, and overall quality of life among patients in the clinical trials who received upadacitinib with those in the same studies who received a dummy (placebo) treatment. Upadacitinib improved patient-reported symptoms and quality of life early in the clinical trials, often within the first 1–2 weeks. The extent of the improvements increased through weeks 4–6 of treatment and lasted through week 16. Patients who received upadacitinib reported greater improvements in symptoms and quality of life than did patients who received placebo. Background: Existing patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) for chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) use a variety of recall periods and response scales to assess CRS symptom burden. Global perspectives of CRS patients regarding optimal recall periods and response scales for CRS PROMs are unknown. Methods: This was a multi-center, cross-sectional study recruiting 461 CRS patients from sites across the United States, Saudi Arabia, New Zealand, and Austria. Participants chose which CRS symptom recall period (1 day, 2 weeks, 1 month, >1 month) was most reflective of their current disease state and upon which to best base treatment recommendations (including surgery). Participants also chose which of six response scales (one visual analogue scale and five Likert scales ranging from four to eight items) was easiest to use, understand, and preferred. Results: A plurality of participants (40.0%) felt their CRS symptoms' current state was best reflected by a 1-month recall period. However, most patients (56.9%) preferred treatment recommendations to be determined by symptoms experienced over a >1 month period. The four- and five-item Likert scales were the easiest to understand (26.0% and 25.4%, respectively) and use (23.4% and 26.7%, respectively). The five-item (26.4% rating it most preferred and 70.9% rating it preferred) and four-item Likert (22.3% rating it most preferred and 56.4% rating it preferred) response scales were most preferred. Conclusion: Future PROMs for CRS should consider assessment of symptoms over a 1-month period and use a four- or five-itemLikert response scale to reflect global patient preferences.
