In recent decades, TV has depicted schooling in wildly different ways. During this time, the field of Curriculum Studies has evolved with the generation and incorporation of different theories. The FOX television show The Simpsons has been around for over 30 years, with more than 700 episodes. A satirical, animated comedy, The Simpsons has millions of fans around the world and its numerous characters are instantly recognizable. Two of the main characters, children Bart and Lisa, are in elementary school and their educational experience is satirized frequently, with episodes taking place at Springfield Elementary and featuring their teachers, classmates, and administration—often with biting criticism of curriculum, privatization, and standardized testing, to name a few. The Simpsons also features episodes retelling historical events, where the family experiences different countries and cultures, and participates in the political process. The Simpsons is unique in that the show itself is also a historical source, having been on the air since 1989. Issues that were current in the early 1990s at the height of popularity of The Simpsons are now considered historical, and there is room in classrooms to critically analyze the show with students about whether the show has adapted well to the 2020s, particularly with the show's use of cultural stereotypes. This edited book offers a collection of classroom-ready tools based on the Hollywood or History? strategy and designed to foster historical inquiry through the careful use of episodes or clips from The Simpsons. This book will be organized by the 10 Themes of Social Studies as outlined by the National Council for the Social Studies (NCSS, 2010). Each of these 10 sections of the book feature two or three lesson plans from the massive catalog of The Simpsons. Over the last eighty years there has been a global rise in'peace communication'practice, the use of interpersonal and mass communication interventions to mediate between peoples engaged in political conflict. In this study, Yael Warshel assesses Israeli and Palestinian versions of Sesame Street, which targeted negative inter-group attitudes and stereotypes. Merging communication, peace and conflict studies, social psychology, anthropology, political science, education, Middle Eastern and childhood studies, this book provides a template to think about how audiences receive, interpret, use and are influenced by peace communication. By picking apart the text and subtext of the kind of media these specific audiences of children consume, Warshel examines how they interpret peace communication interventions, are socialized into Palestinians, Jewish Israelis and Arab/Palestinian Israelis, the political opinions they express and the violence they reproduce. She questions whether peace communication practices have any relevant structural impact on their audiences, critiques such interventions and offers recommendations for improving future communication interventions into political conflict worldwide. more...

A reversal in rural-to-urban migration patterns is creating increasing interest in the quality of education in rural areas and in techniques for meeting educational needs in sparsely populated regions. Wholesale urbanization of rural schools generally is rejected as a potential solution: it is logistically inefficient; centralization and standardization are met with growing resistance; and conventional solutions to educational problems produce uneven results when applied to rural areas. This book addresses the broad spectrum of rural education issues within OECD member countries. Tal es el caso de la presente obra, la cual ofrece una solución dirigida a proveedores de servicios IPTV para el soporte de Comunidades académicas virtuales —CAV— en torno a contenidos de Vídeo bajo demanda —VoD, por las iniciales en inglés—. Im ersten Teil dieser Arbeit soll der heutige Wissensstand in Bezug auf den Fernsehkonsum von Vorschulkindern und dessen Auswirkungen erläutert werden. Im zweiten Teil wird ein Überblick über das Kinderzeichnen gegeben. Daraufhin wird auf die unterschiedlichen Funktionen des Zeichnens eingegangen, bevor die wichtigsten Inhaltselemente einer Zeichnung und deren Bedeutung erklärt werden. Als letztes wird in diesem Kapitel noch auf häufige Fehlerquellen hierzu eingegangen. Dem dritten Teil liegt eine vom Autor dieser Arbeit durchgeführte Studie über mögliche Auswirkungen des Fernsehens auf das Kinderzeichnen zugrunde. Um diese im weiteren Verlauf auszuwerten und interpretieren zu können, werden hier zu Beginn sowohl die Voraussetzungen der Studie an sich als auch die der Kinder behandelt. Im vierten Teil folgt abschließend die Interpretation der Zeichnungen der Kinder mit Hilfe der zuvor genannten Inhaltselemente und dem Inhalt der Zeichnungen selbst.
