This paper examines whether tourism can improve the diversity of cuisine and destination residents' welfare. We constructed a theoretical model of tourism development-driven diversified welfare and found that, in open cities which receive tourists, non-tradable goods can be diversified by tourism development, which can enhance residents' welfare. We further used cuisine diversity as a proxy of the diversity of non-tradable goods and established a panel dataset. Regression results indicate that tourism intensity positively influences cuisine diversity and welfare. The impact of tourism intensity on welfare can be realized through the mediating effect of cuisine diversity. Our findings remain robust after robustness checks, and subsample analysis shows that the positive impact of tourism on welfare is more remarkable in urban destinations with limited resources for tourism development and undeveloped cities. The San Martín region, located in the Peruvian jungle, presents ecological constraints regarding environmental tourism, encompassing natural and cultural resources. However, unplanned urban growth is degrading the urban landscape, with the town center of San Antonio being the most affected, losing approximately 377 ha. in natural forest. Therefore, this research presents the following question: How do ecological tourism hubs articulate the sustainable urban landscape of the Morales–San Antonio axis? The objectives of this research are to identify centers of ecological tourism, delimit perimeters and geomorphological patterns, interpret the territory and its transition through landscape transformations, and recognize the social tourism dynamics of people in the province. Likewise, this research has a qualitative approach, whose instruments were the observation sheet, open interview, and municipal documents, and the data collection techniques were through satellite images, cartography, photographic records, and design software. The result is evidence of an axis with tourism potential in the city of Tarapoto, which is experiencing very accelerated urban growth and where urbanized ecological places can be seen. Indicators were also identified for tourism centers organized into four groups: buildings with tourism potential, natural remnants, ecological areas, and permanently flooded and/or swampy areas. Finally, it is concluded that the city of Tarapoto has ecological tourism centers and that these are articulated in the sustainable urban landscape of the Morales–San Antonio axis. This study aims to restructure a location-aware audio guide mobile application designed for urban walking tours. Traditional points of interest-based geofencing, which triggers automatic guide delivery as users approach specific locations, struggle to provide continuous and consistent storytelling in areas with limited notable spots, thereby diminishing tourist experiences. To address this challenge, we propose a hierarchical geofencing framework that forms the basis for seamless audio guide experiences through scale-based feature switching and the definition of story serialization rules. In addition, this study proposes geofence-to-conversation techniques utilizing text-to-speech engines and large language models to dynamically adapt guide document resources to dynamic tourists' movements. A demonstration conducted in a historic urban park area highlighted that the guide generation time in both English and Japanese guide modes is significantly shorter than playback duration, confirming technical feasibility for seamless regional storytelling. Furthermore, we define metrics such as starting time errors, ending time errors, undelivered time to evaluate the real-time performance of location-aware audio guide applications. The experimental results demonstrate effective strategies for geofence configuration and operations, enhancing user experiences in our generative audio tours. AbstractThis study evaluated the healing benefits of different holiday experiences on employee unhappiness. It developed a model of “Destination Experience–Psychological Recovery–Work Performance” based on liminality and logotherapy theories, which explain how tourism heals employee unhappiness. The researcher employed a weekly diary methodology to collect data from 596 participants, and then utilised partial least squares structural equation modelling (PLS-SEM) methods and multi-group analysis to test the theoretical model. The results indicated that tourism (vs home) and rural (vs urban) tourism destination experiences significantly healed urban employees’ unhappiness. Additionally, this study found that the healing effect of rural tourism destination experiences on urban employee unhappiness was mediated by mastery experiences and moderated by tour duration. To provide a deeper understanding of the hypotheses, semi-structured interviews were conducted to explore urban employees’ rural tourism healing experiences and strategies. This study enhances our understanding of how tourism reduces employee unhappiness and contributes to the literature on the spillover effects of tourism on work. Introduction: This study aims to elucidate the temporal and spatial distribution patterns of sports tourism resources within the Sichuan-Chongqing Urban Agglomeration, examining how these distributions reflect the developmental pathways of urban regions. The theoretical framework posits that the availability and allocation of sports tourism resources are influenced by various geographical and socio-economic factors, with topography, economic conditions, and population density playing pivotal roles in determining their distribution and development. Methods: Utilizing GeoDetector technology alongside indices such as the Geographic Concentration Index and the Disparities Index, we conducted a comprehensive analysis of the spatiotemporal dynamics of sports tourism resources, revealing that the distribution of these resources serves as a key indicator of urban development speed. Results: Our findings indicate that topographical features significantly influence sports tourism resource development differently in Chengdu compared to Chongqing. Furthermore, we identified a strong positive correlation between population density and the distribution of sports tourism resources, highlighting the motivational role of populated areas and emphasizing potential inequalities if attention is focused solely on densely populated regions. Discussion: This research provides novel insights into the complex relationships governing sports tourism resource distribution by employing advanced geo-analytical tools. It offers a strategic roadmap for equitable and sustainable urban development by addressing disparities in resource allocation, ultimately contributing to informed policy-making and enhanced regional resilience. Introduction: In the context of the internet economy era, historic cities face increasing pressure to attract tourists through effective urban design strategies. Immersive districts, particularly in historic Chinese cities, have emerged as an innovative approach to enhance tourism experiences, achieving notable success. This paper explores the use of immersive design strategies in the Guitanglou (簋唐楼) district in Xi'an, China, with a focus on gamification theory. Methods: The study employs in-depth interviews and content analysis to examine the design strategies employed in the Guitanglou immersive district. Through these methods, the research investigates how immersive experiences can be used to enhance tourist engagement in historic sites. Results: The research introduces a "4S" design model, consisting of Scene, Socialization, Story, and Stimulus. The model suggests that by innovating design within these four key areas, tourists can engage more deeply with the immersive district, resulting in stronger cultural resonance and emotional connections. Discussion: This study offers new insights into tourism and urban design, highlighting how immersive districts can serve as effective platforms for disseminating historical and cultural values. The findings suggest that leveraging communication strategies familiar to digital natives can create a balance between cultural preservation and economic growth, offering a fresh perspective on urban design in historic settings. Like other economic sectors, such as agriculture, the tourism and hospitality industry faces numerous sustainability challenges, including substantial environmental water and waste footprints. These challenges emerge out of various factors; amongst them is general environmental degradation due to growing global populations and the increasing impact of and pressure from climate change that forces shareholders and tourists to demand that the tourism industry adopt sustainable practices. However, water and waste management studies related to the tourism industry remain limited worldwide. This study examined water and waste management issues from Environmental, Social, Governance (ESG) and Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) perspectives, focusing on Cape Town hotels. The primary research question investigates how the tourism and hospitality industry has sought to address various targets under SDG 6 (water and sanitation) and SDG 12 (responsible consumption and production). Utilising mixed-method data collected through key informant interviews and field observations from 30 hotels in Cape Town's central business district, this study found that after Day Zero in Cape Town, the hotel industry has intensified efforts to address water efficiency and security through the implementation of various technologies and techniques to ensure water sustainability. In addition to addressing water issues, the hotel industry is making increasing efforts to minimise and avoid hotel waste in response to consumer demand for accountability and sustainable tourism products. The study notes that while waste management is often challenging, it can provide businesses an opportunity to leverage progress in waste management and water to cut on expenditure and sustainability green marketing, which, in a manner, is financially rewarding. The study recommends financial and non-financial means to address waste and water management to foster better resource management in light of environmental and climate change challenges faced globally. AbstractDespite the growth in research on tourism resilience and urban resilience, the resilience of urban tourist destinations remains underexplored. This is particularly concerning given the increasing disaster risks faced by these destinations. This article integrates a system–agent–institution resilience framework with disaster management cycles to examine the systemic structure, resilience qualities, and paths to resilience of urban tourist destinations. A qualitative approach is employed to investigate the resilience of a coastal urban destination to typhoons. Our findings reveal that: (1) the destination exhibited resilience qualities across the stages of preparation and mitigation, response and recovery, and adaptation and transformation; (2) urban destination resilience is driven by two stabilization paths and three innovative paths; and (3) the critical role of formal institutions, the integration of the tourism sector through multiple channels, and the combination of top-down management with bottom-up innovation are essential for urban destination resilience. This article extends existing discussions on tourism resilience by providing a comprehensive framework for urban destination resilience to disasters and identifying key elements that contribute to resilience. Taking the selection of "National Civilized City" as a quasi-natural experiment and basing on the research samples of 272 prefecture level and above cities in China from 2003 to 2020, this paper explores the impact of the establishment of civilized cities on urban inclusive development and its mechanism by using the time-varying DID model. The findings are as follows: firstly, the establishment of civilized cities has significantly promoted the urban inclusive development, and then parallel trend test, placebo test and other robustness tests verify the reliability of the research conclusions. Secondly, in regions with larger population, stronger financial strength and belonging to the Excellent Tourism City, the establishment of civilized cities has a more obvious role in promoting urban inclusiveness. Thirdly, the establishment of civilized cities promotes the urban inclusive development through government public regulation at the macro level, industrial structure upgrading at the middle level, and talent gathering and infrastructure construction at the micro level. The research conclusion of this paper has a certain reference value for giving full play to the policy effect of the selection of "National Civilized Cities", further promoting the urban inclusive development and achieving common prosperity. Regenerative tourism is a transformational approach to healing relationships between tourism, places and communities. Several urban rivers are being made swimmable (again) to mitigate against negative climate effects, promote urban health and liveability and contribute to the city's tourism potential. This paper examines the application of a regenerative tourism conceptual framework (RTCF) to the Swimmable Birrarung/Yarra River (SB2030) initiative in Narrm, Melbourne, Australia and the dynamics among the key initiative stakeholders. Swimming is applied to catalyse regenerative transformations of the city's main waterway. Tourism's contributions to regenerating the river and its community are examined. The RTCF is tested for the development and implementation of a transdisciplinary action research project involving the river, civil society, academic, Indigenous, business, and government actors. Analysis of the SB2030 initiative shows that extractive approaches dominate tourism's approach to the river but also that tourism can play a critical role in supporting the regenerative development of the river and its community. Rather than a type of tourism, it positions tourism's core purpose as a contributor to the regeneration of social-ecological systems. Evidently, other sectors must create conditions suitable for tourism to support the multi-systems urban river regeneration impetus. The debate on tourism in cities, both academically and in practice, has for a long time taken place in relative isolation from urban studies. Tourism is mostly addressed as an external agent and economic force that puts pressure on cities rather than as an interdependent part of city systems. The recent debate on city touristification and excessive dependence on the visitor economy, as well as the associated processes of exclusion, and displacement of local city users, serves to highlight how tourism is an integral part of urban developments. A wider urban perspective is needed to understand the processes underlying the tourism phenomena and more transdisciplinary perspectives are required to analyze the urban (tourism) practices. The current article seeks to contribute to such a perspective through a discussion of the literature on urban and tourism studies, and related fields such as gentrification, mobilities, and touristification. Based on this, theoretical reflections are provided regarding a more integral perspective to tourism and urban development in order to engage with a transversal urban tourism research agenda. Smart Heritage, a concept closely linked to Smart Cities and Smart Tourism, is an emerging field focused on enhancing heritage identity, visitor experience, and cultural sustainability. While initial frameworks have been developed, there is a gap in applying Smart Heritage at the precinct level, especially in large-scale heritage sites. This study addresses this gap by examining how open-access data can be utilised in a real-world case study of Chinatown Melbourne, a key urban heritage precinct. Data sources include archival maps, open-access databases, and 3D models provided by the local city council, covering resources such as on-street parking, pedestrian activity, microclimate, and dwelling functionalities. This study employed a structured methodology that transitions from global best practices to local applications, linking these data resources to Smart Heritage applications and identifying opportunities for improving urban management, heritage curation, and the tourism experience within the case study precinct. The findings offer practical insights for researchers and policymakers, demonstrating how data can support the development of culturally sustainable and technologically integrated heritage precincts. The nexus between tourism and income inequality has received much attention but no consensus emerged. It is of interest to explore how this nexus is affected by the important external condition of the Internet. This study examines the spatial threshold effect of the Internet on the nexus between tourism and urban-rural income inequality by developing a spatial threshold model. Using panel data for 280 Chinese cities from 2003 to 2019, the results show that the impact of the Internet is characterised by clear spatial thresholds, and the local and spatial spillover effects of tourism on urban-rural income inequality vary under different regimes of Internet development. Further, by differentiating the Internet's functions, the inequality-reducing effect of tourism in local and surrounding cities has strengthened significantly as cities' Internet penetration improves; meanwhile, this effect has increased first and then decreased as cities' online market penetration deepens, with a relative optimal interval.
