We evaluated changes in hyperhydration and beverage hydration index (BHI, a composite measure of fluid balance after consuming a test beverage relative to water) during resting, induced by the consumption of beverages containing glycerol and sodium supplemented with fast-absorbing sucrose or slow-absorbing isomaltulose. In a randomized crossover, single-blinded protocol (clinical trials registry: UMIN000042644), 14 young physically active adults (three women) consumed 1 L of beverage containing either 7% glycerol + 0.5% sodium (Gly + Na), Gly + Na plus 7% sucrose (Gly + Na + Suc), Gly + Na plus 7% isomaltulose (Gly + Na + Iso), or water (CON) over a 40 min period. We assessed the change in plasma volume (ΔPV), BHI (calculated from cumulative urine output following consumption of water relative to that of the beverage), and blood glucose and sodium for 180 min after initiating ingestion. Total urine volume was reduced in all beverages containing glycerol and sodium compared to CON (all P ≤ 0.002). The addition of isomaltulose increased BHI by ∼45% (3.43 ± 1.0 vs. 2.50 ± 0.7 for Gly + Na, P = 0.011) whereas sucrose did not (2.6 ± 0.6, P = 0.826). The PV expansion was earliest for Gly + Na (30 min), slower for Gly + Na + Suc (90 min), and slowest for Gly + Na + Iso (120 min) with a concomitant lag in the increase of blood glucose and sodium concentrations. Supplementation of beverages containing glycerol and sodium with isomaltulose but not sucrose enhances BHI from those of glycerol and sodium only under a resting state, likely due to the slow absorption of isomaltulose-derived monosaccharides (i.e., glucose and fructose). Background: Migrant seasonal agricultural workers face conditions of material vulnerability such as inadequate housing difficulties prevent access to running water supplies. The purpose of this study is to explore the perceptions of professionals involved in the care and support of seasonal migrant agricultural workers, as it relates to water access and water consumption and their impact on these workers' health, in a context of COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: A qualitative exploratory and descriptive study was conducted in 2021 as part of a larger research project, based on 63 personal semi-structured interviews with professionals who provided support to seasonal migrant agricultural workers in three Spanish autonomous regions. COREQ checklist was used for reporting. The interviews were recorded, transcribed, and imported into ATLAS.ti-9 for an inductive thematic analysis. Results: The results have been structured into two main themes: (1) Accessing and obtaining water; and (2) Health problems related to water consumption. Seasonal migrant agricultural workers experience barriers to obtaining safe water for hygiene, cleaning, food preparation and drinking. The implementation of regulations to reduce COVID-19 transmission resulted in improved hygiene levels in the migrants' quarters, including access to safe drinking water. Conclusion: This study suggests that water insecurity experienced by migrant seasonal agricultural workers in Spain results from their poor living conditions and causes health problems related to a lack of hygiene and the use of unsafe water. Background: Fluid loss during prolonged exercise in hot conditions poses thermoregulatory and cardiovascular challenges for athletes that can lead to impaired performance. Pre-exercise hyperhydration using nutritional aids is a strategy that may prevent or delay the adverse effects of dehydration and attenuate the impact of heat stress on exercise performance. Objectives: The aim of this systematic review was to examine the current literature to determine the effect of pre-exercise hyperhydration on performance, key physiological responses and gastrointestinal symptoms. Methods: English language, full-text articles that compared the intervention with a baseline or placebo condition were included. An electronic search of Medline Complete, SPORTDiscus and Embase were used to identify articles with the final search conducted on 11 October 2022. Studies were assessed using the American Dietetic Association Quality Criteria Checklist. Results: Thirty-eight studies involving 403 participants (n = 361 males) were included in this review (n = 22 assessed exercise performance or capacity). Two studies reported an improvement in time-trial performance (range 5.7–11.4%), three studies reported an improvement in total work completed (kJ) (range 4–5%) and five studies reported an increase in exercise capacity (range 14.3–26.2%). During constant work rate exercise, nine studies observed a reduced mean heart rate (range 3–11 beats min−1), and eight studies reported a reduced mean core temperature (range 0.1–0.8 °C). Ten studies reported an increase in plasma volume (range 3.5–12.6%) compared with a control. Gastrointestinal symptoms were reported in 26 studies, with differences in severity potentially associated with factors within the ingestion protocol of each study (e.g. treatment, dose, ingestion rate). Conclusions: Pre-exercise hyperhydration may improve exercise capacity during constant work rate exercise due to a reduced heart rate and core temperature, stemming from an acute increase in plasma volume. The combination of different osmotic aids (e.g. glycerol and sodium) may enhance fluid retention and this area should continue to be explored. Future research should utilise valid and reliable methods of assessing gastrointestinal symptoms. Furthermore, studies should investigate the effect of hyperhydration on different exercise modalities whilst implementing a strong level of blinding. Despite an often favorable risk/benefit ratio, patients with severe chronic kidney disease are sometimes declined for interventional coronary procedures, due to the risk of acute kidney injury post-contrast (AKI-PC). A large preventive supply of intravenous fluid may be problematic in this population. The RenalGuard® system allows hyperhydration by maintaining a stable volemia through an enhanced diuresis. This work reports the evaluation of the RenalGuard® system in 25 consecutive patients with chronic kidney disease (glomerular filtration rate < 40 mL/min/1.73 m²) requiring an interventional coronary procedure (coronary angiography and/or percutaneous coronary intervention) and at high risk of IRA-PC. An increase in serum creatinine ≥ 26.5 µmol/L at 48–72 hours (AKI-PC definition) was observed in 4 patients (16%). The mean glomerular filtration rate was 26 ± 8 mL/min/1.73 m² at 48–72 hours versus 25 ± 8 mL/min/1.73 m² at baseline. No patient presented with an increase in serum creatinine ≥ 1.5 from baseline, stage 2 or 3 AKI, or acute pulmonary edema. No renal replacement therapy was necessary. One death unrelated to AKI-PC occurred during hospital stay. This single-center observational study suggests that the RenalGuard® system, allowing diuresis-adjusted hyperhydration, is safe and useful for patients at high risk of AKI-PC after an interventional coronary procedure. Low urinary luteinizing hormone (LH) values have been discussed as a marker to detect steroid abuse. However, suppressed LH concentrations related to highly diluted urine samples could be a misleading indication of anabolic steroid abuse. One aim of the present study was to examine the effect of hyperhydration on the interpretation of LH findings during doping control analysis and to investigate different possibilities to correct volume-related changes in urinary LH concentrations. Seven healthy, physically active, nonsmoking White males were examined for a 72-hr period, using water and a commercial sports drink as hyperhydration agents (20 ml/kg body weight). Urine samples were collected and analyzed according to the World Anti-Doping Agency's technical documents. Baseline urinary LH concentrations, expressed as the mean ± SD for each individual, were within the acceptable physiological range (7.11 ± 5.42 IU/L). A comparison of the measured LH values for both hyperhydration phases (Phase A: 4.24 ± 5.60 IU/L and Phase B: 4.74 ± 4.72 IU/L) with the baseline ("normal") values showed significant differences (Phase A: p < .001 and Phase B: p < .001), suggesting the clear effect of urine dilution due to hyperhydration. However, an adjustment of urinary LH concentrations by specific gravity based on a reference value of 1.020 seems to adequately correct the hyperhydration-induced decrease on the LH levels. Aquaporin-4 (AQP4) is characterized by the formation of orthogonal arrays of particles (OAPs) comprising its M1 and M23 isoforms in the plasma membrane. However, the biological importance of OAP formation is obscure. Here, we developed an OAP depolymerization male mouse model by transgenic knock-in of an AQP4-A25Q mutation. Analyses of the mutant brain tissue using blue native polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis, super-resolution imaging, and immunogold electron microscopy revealed remarkably reduced OAP structures and glial endfeet localization of the AQP4-A25Q mutant protein without effects on its overall mRNA and protein expression. AQP4A25Q/A25Q mice showed better survival and neurologic deficit scores when cerebral edema was induced by water intoxication or middle cerebral artery occlusion/reperfusion. The brain water content and swelling of pericapillary astrocytic endfeet processes in AQP4A25Q/A25Q mice were significantly reduced, functionally supporting decreased AQP4 protein expression at the blood–brain barrier. The infarct volume and neuronal damage were also reduced in AQP4A25Q/A25Q mice in the middle cerebral artery occlusion/reperfusion model. Astrocyte activation in the brain was alleviated in AQP4A25Q/A25Q mice, which may be associated with decreased cell swelling. We conclude that the OAP structure of AQP4 plays a key role in its polarized expression in astrocytic endfeet processes at the blood–brain barrier. Background: Antineoplastic treatments produce adverse events (AE) such as gastrointestinal toxicity. These AE can reduce nutritional intake and promote weight and muscle mass loss. Objective: To determine if body composition, nutritional status, or muscle function predicts gastrointestinal toxicity during chemotherapy in cervical cancer (CC) patients. Methods: Women with CC were studied. Nutritional status was evaluated according to PG-SGA, and body composition was measured with bioimpedance. Toxicity was graded according to the National Cancer Institute (NCI) Common Terminology Criteria for Adverse Events (CTCAE). Results: A total of 207 women, 81 with toxicity and 126 without toxicity groups, were studied. Patients in the toxicity group had less handgrip strength (17.7 ± 5.0 vs. 20.3 ± 5.0 p = 0.0004); phase angle (5.2 ± 1.1 vs. 5.9 ± 1.0, p = 0.0065); higher prevalence of sarcopenia (35.9% vs. 20.6%, p = 0.016); overhydration (25.9% vs. 6.3% p < 0.001); and PG-SGA C (14.1% vs. 4.0%, p < 0.001) when compared to patients without toxicity. Handgrip strength (HR: 0.93, 95% CI 0.88–0.98, p = 0.028), overhydration (HR: 2.82, 95% CI 1.22–6.51, p = 0.015) and been severely malnourished according to PG-PGA (HR: 3.6, 95%CI 1.46–9.2, p < 0.001) were associated with the risk to present gastrointestinal toxicity. Hyponatremia is acute when present for <48 h. Most cases of acute hyponatremia involve both excess free water intake and an at least partial urinary free water excretion defect. By contrast, hyperacute water intoxication may result from a large excess electrolyte-free water intake in such a short time that properly working urinary free water excretion mechanisms cannot cope. A hyperacute decrease in serum sodium may lead to death before medical intervention takes place. Well-documented cases have been published in the military medicine literature. In addition, news reports suggest the existence of cases of voluntary ingestion of excess free water by non-psychiatric individuals usually during 'dare' activities. Education of the public is required to prevent harm from these high-risk activities. Adequate training of emergency medical units may prevent lethal outcomes. Spanish media reported the case of a male who died following his triumph in a 20-min beer drinking contest. 'From a heart attack. We now review the physiology underlying hyperacute water intoxication and discuss the potential contribution of hyperacute water loading and acute hyponatremia to the demise of this patient. An acute reduction in plasma osmolality causes rapid uptake of water by astrocytes but not by neurons, whereas both cell types swell as a consequence of lost blood flow (ischemia). Either hypoosmolality or ischemia can displace the brain downwards, potentially causing death. However, these disorders are fundamentally different at the cellular level. Astrocytes osmotically swell or shrink because they express functional water channels (aquaporins), whereas neurons lack functional aquaporins and thus maintain their volume. Yet both neurons and astrocytes immediately swell when blood flow to the brain is compromised (cytotoxic edema) as following stroke onset, sudden cardiac arrest, or traumatic brain injury. In each situation, neuronal swelling is the direct result of spreading depolarization (SD) generated when the ATP-dependent sodium/potassium ATPase (the Na+/K+ pump) is compromised. The simple, and incorrect, textbook explanation for neuronal swelling is that increased Na+ influx passively draws Cl− into the cell, with water following by osmosis via some unknown conduit. We first review the strong evidence that mammalian neurons resist volume change during acute osmotic stress. We then contrast this with their dramatic swelling during ischemia. Counter-intuitively, recent research argues that ischemic swelling of neurons is non-osmotic, involving ion/water cotransporters as well as at least one known amino acid water pump. While incompletely understood, these mechanisms argue against the dogma that neuronal swelling involves water uptake driven by an osmotic gradient with aquaporins as the conduit. Promoting clinical recovery from neuronal cytotoxic edema evoked by spreading depolarizations requires a far better understanding of molecular water pumps and ion/water cotransporters that act to rebalance water shifts during brain ischemia. Ces recommandations traitent notamment du bilan initial minimal, des scores de gravités reconnus, de la prise en charge médicale initiale avec l'hyperhydratation, l'anticoagulation préventive, la réalimentation précoce, des délais d'imagerie et de la gestion des complications. Nous avons essayé dans ce travail, de regrouper les différentes recommandations, articles et études traitant de ce sujet, en nous fondant plus particulièrement sur les recommandations européennes, afin de guider la prise en charge de la pancréatite aiguë en pratique courante. The management of acute pancreatitis is now fairly codified, with specific recommendations developed by expert groups. These recommendations deal in particular with the minimum initial assessment, recognized severity scores, initial medical management with hyperhydration, preventive anticoagulation, early refeeding, delays in imaging and management of complications. In this work, we have tried to bring together the various recommendations, articles and studies dealing with this subject, based more particularly on European recommendations, in order to guide the management of acute pancreatitis in current practice. We determined the relationship between changes in bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) parameters and response of critically ill patients to fluid therapy during early postoperative period. Associations between BIA values indicating volume status of postoperative patient and clinical outcomes were also evaluated. From May 2019 to April 2020, patients who were admitted to the surgical intensive care unit (SICU) of our institution at more than 48 h after surgery were enrolled. Volume status was measured with a portable BIA device every morning for five days from SICU admission. Overhydration was defined as the case where extracellular water (ECW) ratio > 0.390 measured by BIA. Participants were daily classified into an overhydration or a normohydration group. The relationship between daily hydration status and postoperative outcome was evaluated. Most of the 190 participants showed the overhydration status in the first 48 h after surgery. The overhydration status on day 3 was significant predictor of postoperative morbidities (OR 1.182) and in-hospital mortality (OR 2.040). SOFA score was significant factor of postoperative morbidities (OR 1.163) and in-hospital mortality (OR 3.151) except for the overhydration status on day 3. Cut-off values of overhydration status by ECW ratio at day 3 for predicting postoperative morbidities and in-hospital mortality were > 0.3985 and > 0.4145, respectively. BIA would be a useful and convenient tool to assess the volume status of patients requiring intensive fluid resuscitation in early postoperative period. Water intoxication is a potentially fatal hypo-osmolar syndrome with brain function impairment. Isolated symptomatic excessive ingestion of free water is very rare in childhood. We report a case of acute hyponatremia due to water intoxication without Antidiuretic Hormone (ADH) excess in a child with sickle cell disease. The boy was admitted to our Emergency Department because of new-onset prolonged generalized seizures. Blood test showed hyponatremia, and elevated creatine kinase value; neuroimaging was negative. His recent medical history revealed that on the day before he had drunk about 4 liters of water in 2 hours to prevent sickling, because of back pain. He was treated with mild i.v. hydration with normal saline solution and showed progressive clinical improvement and normalization of laboratory test. Background: Acute water intoxication after hysteroscopy is a rare, life-threatening condition, often accompanied with delayed diagnosis owing to masked symptoms because of general anesthesia.Case Presentation: Herein we presented a 39-year-old female who presented with cardiac arrest after hysteroscopic myomectomy because of acute water intoxication and survived after extracorporeal membrane oxygenation, continuous venous-venous hemofiltration, and aggressive high sodium fluid resuscitation.Conclusion: Failure to recognize and treat this condition appropriately may lead to potentially lethal cardiopulmonary complications. Background: Hyponatremia during labor and delivery may result in severe maternal and neonatal sequelae. Our aim was to describe the direct effect of hyponatremia in labor on pregnancy outcome.Methods: A case series of parturients diagnosed with hyponatremia during labor and their neonates. Clinical presentation, laboratory workup, and maternal and neonatal outcomes are presented.Results: Four parturients and their corresponding six neonates were diagnosed with hyponatremia. Of these, two cases were caused by water intoxication and two were preeclampsia induced. While two were identified due to maternal or neonatal symptoms, two were diagnosed by routine laboratory testing. In all cases, low maternal sodium resulted in similarly low neonatal sodium. Neonatal symptoms included respiratory distress syndrome (RDS), lethargy, and jaundice.Conclusion: Psychogenic drinking during labor and preeclampsia may predispose to maternal hyponatremia, resulting in neonatal hyponatremia. Glycerol-induced hyperhydration (GIH) has been shown to improve fluid retention and endurance performance compared with water-induced hyperhydration. The goal of this article is to report on what is known and unknown about how glycerol-containing hyperhydration solutions (GCHSs) are processed at the stomach and intestine level, propose strategies to improve the efficacy of GIH, and provide research questions for future studies. Through statistical analyses, it is demonstrated that the effectiveness of GCHSs in increasing fluid retention is maximized when fluid ingestion is in the upper range of what is normally administered by studies (∼26 ml/kg body weight) and the duration of the protocol is no longer than the time it takes for the glycerol-fluid load to be totally or nearly completely integrated inside the body. The rate of gastric emptying and intestinal absorption of GCHSs is unknown. However, based on an analysis of indirect evidence obtained from human studies, it is proposed that most glycerol (∼80 g) and fluid (∼ 1,700 ml) ingested during a typical GIH protocol can be integrated inside the body within 60-90 min. Whether the stress associated with competition could alter these figures is unknown. Research in rats indicates that combining glycerol with glucose at a 3:1 ratio accelerates intestinal absorption of both glycerol and water, thereby potentially improving the efficacy of GIH. Human studies must be conducted to determine how GCHSs are processed by the gastrointestinal system and whether adding glucose to GCHSs could improve the technique's efficacy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The authors determined, through a meta-analytic approach, whether glycerol-induced hyperhydration (GIH) enhances fluid retention and increases endurance performance (EP) significantly more than water-induced hyperhydration (WIH). Collectively, studies administered 23.9 ± 2.7 mL of fluid/kg body weight (BW) with 1.1 ± 0.2 g glycerol/kg BW, and hyperhydration was measured 136 ± 15 min after its onset. Compared with WIH, GIH increased fluid retention by 7.7 ± 2.8 mL/kg BW (P < 0.01; pooled effect size [PES]: 1.64 ± 0.80, P < 0.01, N = 14). The use of GIH was associated with an improvement in EP of 2.62% ± 1.60% (P = 0.047; PES: 0.35 ± 0.13, P = 0.014, N = 4). Unarguably, GIH significantly enhances fluid retention better than WIH. Water intoxication is rarely seen in forensic practice and is typically associated with excessive water consumption, amphetamine intake, and child abuse. Iatrogenic water intoxication is rare but usually related to medical disputes. Here, we report a 44-year-old female was admitted to the hospital due to a 3-month history of excessive menstrual bleeding. B-ultrasound revealed multiple substantial intrauterine masses, leading to a diagnosis of multiple uterine fibroids. After admission, she underwent submucous myomectomy, endometrial resection, and transcervical resection of endometrial polyps. During the procedure, the patient suffered dizziness and chest tightness, her blood pressure decreased to 89/52 mmHg, and moist rales were heard in her both lungs; she died despite medical efforts. A forensic autopsy was performed and revealed severe pulmonary edema. Considering the patient’s clinical history, acute water intoxication was considered to be the cause of death. This highlights the need for forensic pathologists to be vigilant of postoperative water intoxication, a rare complication in obstetrics, to ensure accurate assessments. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract Cerebral edema in ischemic stroke can lead to increased intracranial pressure, reduced cerebral blood flow and neuronal death. Unfortunately, current therapies for cerebral edema are either ineffective or highly invasive. During the development of cytotoxic and subsequent ionic cerebral edema water enters the brain by moving across an intact blood brain barrier and through aquaporin-4 (AQP4) at astrocyte endfeet. Using AQP4-expressing cells, we screened small molecule libraries for inhibitors that reduce AQP4-mediated water permeability. Additional functional assays were used to validate AQP4 inhibition and identified a promising structural series for medicinal chemistry. These efforts improved potency and revealed a compound we designated AER-270, N-[3,5-bis (trifluoromethyl)phenyl]-5-chloro-2-hydroxybenzamide. AER-270 and a prodrug with enhanced solubility, AER-271 2-{[3,5-Bis(trifluoromethyl) phenyl]carbamoyl}-4-chlorophenyl dihydrogen phosphate, improved neurological outcome and reduced swelling in two models of CNS injury complicated by cerebral edema: water intoxication and ischemic stroke modeled by middle cerebral artery occlusion. Abstract This paper reports a study, performed by in-situ synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction, of the high-pressure behavior of zeolite L. The experiments were performed using both penetrating (methanol: ethanol: water mixture, m.e.w.) and non-penetrating (silicon oil, s.o.) pressure transmitting media (PTM) to study the compressibility and the possible pressure-induced hydration (PIH) of this synthetic zeolite, technologically relevant as host-guest system exploited in numerous application fields. The experiments were performed from P amb to 6.2 and 6.3 GPa in s.o. and m.e.w., respectively. The crystal structure refinements were performed up to 6.3 GPa and 3.1 GPa for the patterns collected in m.e.w. and s.o., respectively, while the unit cell parameters were determined in the whole pressure range for both media. A strong PIH effect is evident when zeolite L is compressed in m.e.w. and the over-hydration is essentially ascribable to the filling of most the H 2 O sites, to the appearance of a new H 2 O site and to the partially filling of the K sites. The over-hydration starts at a very low pressure (0.5 GPa) and the maximum H 2 O content can be estimated in 31.1 H 2 O molecules, against the original value of 18. The PIH is completely reversible upon P release. The main difference between the compression behavior of zeolite L in the two media is the higher compressibility in the non-penetrating one, evidenced by ΔV = − 6.3% and −9.9% in m.e.w. and s.o, respectively. Our data are consistent with the general behavior of zeolites compressed with penetrating media, when the intrusion of H 2 O molecules hinders the effects of the applied pressure. The results of this work are compared with those obtained on a K-gallosilicate with LTL topology, where PIH induces the formation of H 2 O nanotubes inside the zeolite channel. The health and performance of ultra-endurance athletes is dependent on avoidance of performance limiting hypohydration while also avoiding the potentially fatal consequences of exercise-associated hyponatremia due to overhydration. In this work, key factors related to maintaining proper hydration during ultra-endurance activities are discussed. In general, proper hydration need not be complicated and has been well demonstrated to be achieved by simply drinking to thirst and consuming a typical race diet during ultra-endurance events without need for supplemental sodium. As body mass is lost from oxidation of stored fuel, and water supporting the intravascular volume is generated from endogenous fuel oxidation and released with glycogen oxidation, the commonly promoted hydration guidelines of avoiding body mass losses of >2% can result in overhydration during ultra-endurance activities. Although dehydration is a serious condition associated with significant morbidity and mortality in palliative care patients, as in any other patient group, treatment remains controversial. A narrative review of the causes of dehydration during end of life was conducted paying special attention to the nature of terminal dehydration. A comprehensive search of the literature was performed to identify relevant articles published in English and German languages between 1960 and 2018. Currently available options for bed-side evaluation and therapeutic approaches were critically appraised and areas of future research are emphasized. The following inferences can be derived: 1) the available evidence does not support a clear decision in favor or against fluid therapy during the dying phase. 2) There is inadequate precision of the term end of life care (ELC) and insufficient differentiation between modes of dehydration of palliative care patients. 3) Evaluation of dehydration based on its clinical appearance is considered the method of choice compared to invasive procedures. 4) Detailed clinical assessment of symptom reversibility in terminal dehydration by an appropriate fluid challenge is mandatory in the decision-making process. 5) If despite adequate rehydration measures, complete reversibility of the clinical picture of dehydration can no longer be achieved since organ systems are gradually deteriorating, the cessation of clinically assisted hydration (CAH) can be considered. 6) If symptoms of dehydration are reversible after fluid challenge and no other patient wishes to the contrary are known, fluid management should be continued in the context of symptom control. 7) Hyperhydration represents a considerable threat during fluid management that needs to be prevented by noninvasive monitoring procedures. In conclusion, if CAH is applied as a part of ELC the hydration status needs to be individually appraised and all therapeutic measures constantly need to be adapted to the findings of diligent monitoring procedures. Background and purpose: Diphenylarsinic acid (DPAA) intoxication caused by drinking contaminated well water was found in Kamisu, Japan. The symptoms indicated cerebellar–brainstem and temporo‐occipital involvement. However, it remains unclear how it affects the human brain. To elucidate the effect of DPAA on the human brain, we analyzed cerebral blood flow (CBF) data after the drinking of DPAA‐contaminated water was stopped and investigated the correlation between DPAA exposure level and CBF by single‐photon emission computed tomography (CBF‐SPECT). Methods: The DPAA‐exposed inhabitants (n = 78) were divided into 35 symptomatic and 43 asymptomatic subjects and compared with 38 healthy controls. The DPAA concentration in nails or hair and well water was measured using a high‐performance liquid chromatography system and coupled plasma mass spectrometry after adequate extraction treatment. CBF‐SPECT data, obtained within 1 year after the drinking of contaminated well water was stopped, were analyzed by statistical parametric mapping. We also examined the relationship between variations in CBF‐SPECT signals and variations in DPAA concentrations in the hair or nails of the subjects. Results: Compared with control subjects, CBF in symptomatic DPAA‐exposed subjects was significantly lower in the occipital lobe, including the cuneus and inferior occipital gyri. The DPAA concentration in the nails or hair of subjects was inversely and significantly related to their CBF. Background and aims: Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a significant public health issue, being one of the major contributors to morbidity and mortality in the modern societies. Chronic hyperglycemia produces significant physiological, biochemical, and histological changes in the affected organisms. This study aims to evaluate the markers of endogenous intoxication in rats with diabetes mellitus combined with carrageenan-induced enterocolitis. Materials and methods: Diabetes mellitus was induced by a single intraperitoneal administration of streptozotocin (Sigma Aldrich, USA, at a dose of 60 mg/kg body weight). Carrageenan-induced enterocolitis was modeled by giving the animals free access to 1.0 % solution of carrageenan in drinking water for 1 month. The syndrome of endogenous intoxication was assessed by quantification of low and medium molecular weight substances in blood plasma, red blood cell suspension and urine using extraction-spectrophotometric method. Results: The increase in endogenous intoxication in streptozotocin-induced diabetes combined with chronic enterocolitis can mainly be attributed to the catabolic pool of blood plasma substances of low and medium molecular weight. The index of distribution of low- and medium-molecular-weight substances between blood plasma proteins and glycocalyx of erythrocytes in the experimental groups increased simultaneously with the quantities of investigated fractions in the erythrocyte suspension measured at the wavelengths of 242, 254 and 280 nm. Conclusions: We observed upsurge of endogenous intoxication markers in the rats with diabetes mellitus. Objective: Hemodialysis (HD) patients are exposed to dysregulated fluid balance which can lead to overhydration. Poor sleep quality and excessive daytime sleepiness are particularly common in these patients, however the relationship between fluid status and sleep quality and daytime sleepiness has not yet been studied. Therefore, the aim of this study is to evaluate the correlations between fluid status and sleep quality and daytime sleepiness in HD patients.Method: This cross-sectional study included 115 HD patients and 30 healthy control subjects from the HD center of Shanghai Ninth People's Hospital. Fluid compartments [total body water (TBW)], extracellular water (ECW)] and overhydration index (OH) were analyzed by multifrequency bio-impedance (BCM). Overhydration was defined as OH/ECW≥7%. HD patients were divided into an overhydration group and non overhydration group according to OH/ECW. Sleep quality was assessed by the Chinese version of the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), and excessive daytime sleepiness was evaluated by the Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS).Results: The prevalence rate of fluid overload in HD patients was 65.2%. Poor sleep quality (PSQI≥5) and excessive daytime sleepiness (ESS≥11) were significantly higher in HD patients compared with the healthy controls [6 (3, 10) vs.2.11 ± 1.59, p = 0.000; 3 (0, 6) vs.1.68 ± 1.07, p = 0.045]. Furthermore, the PSQI scores were higher in HD patients with overhydration (7.8 ± 4.5 vs. 4.8 ± 3.2, p = 0.000). The component scores 1, 2, 3 and 5 of the PSQI showed significant differences between the overhydration and non overhydration groups. The ESS scores did not show differences between the two groups (3.9 ± 4.1 vs. 3.3 ± 3.5, p = 0.508). OH was correlated with Systolic BP and Diastolic BP, and additionally was an independent predictor of poor sleep quality.Conclusion: Fluid overload is significantly linked with poor quality of sleep in HD patients, however there is no association with excessive daytime sleepiness. Background Accurate volume status evaluation and differentiation of cardiac and non-cardiac components of overhydration (OH) are fundaments of optimal haemodialysis (HD) management. Methods This study, by combining bioimpedance measurements, cardiovascular biomarkers and echocardiography, aimed at dissecting OH into its major functional components, and prospectively tested the association between cardiac and non-cardiac components of OH with mortality. In the first part, we validated soluble CD146 (sCD146) as a non-cardiac biomarker of systemic congestion in a cohort of 30 HD patients. In the second part, we performed a prospective 1-year follow-up study in an independent cohort of 144 HD patients. Results sCD146 incrementally increased after the short and long intervals after HD (+53 ng/mL, P = 0.006 and  +91 ng/mL, P < 0.001), correlated with OH as determined by bioimpedance and well-diagnosed OH (area under the receiver operating characteristics curve 0.72, P = 0.005). The prevalence of OH was lower for low-sCD146 and low-BNP patients (B-type natriuretic peptide, 29%) compared with subjects with either one or both biomarkers elevated (65–74%, P < 0.001). Notably, most low-BNP but high-sCD146 subjects were overhydrated. Systolic dysfunction was 2- to 3-fold more prevalent among high-BNP compared with low-BNP patients (44–68% versus 21–23%, chi-square P < 0.001), regardless of sCD146. One-year all-cause mortality was markedly higher in patients with high-BNP (P = 0.001) but not with high-sCD146. In multivariate analysis, systolic dysfunction and BNP, but not OH, were associated with lower survival. Conclusions The combination of BNP and sCD146 dissects OH into functional components of prognostic value. Compression of Ksubstituted clinoptillolite in a water:ethanol (1:1) mixture results in its additional hydration: inclusion of 2.2 additional H2O molecules into the structure at the initial stage. Upon further compression the H2O concentration increases by two molecules. This is caused by additional occupancy of partially vacant H2O sites. The cation environment practically does not change during overhydration. Changes in the coordination polyhedra of cations during compression in paraffin are reduced to a small (0.02-0.1 Å) decrease in bond lengths. Distinctions in the degree of hydration of the K-form upon compression in penetrating and non-penetrating media are manifested in the features of the compressibility of the compound. Background: Overhydration is common among peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients and can affect PD-related outcomes. This paper aims to systematically investigate whether bioimpedance-assessed overhydration is a predictor for mortality and technique failure in PD patients. Methods: We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of cohort studies on overhydration and prognosis in PD patients, strictly complying with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematical Reviews and Meta-analyses. Results: Eight articles met the selection criteria and 5 studies were included in the meta-analysis. Meta-analyses-revealed overhydration, defined as a high ratio of extracellular water/total body water (ECW/TBW), was significantly associated with higher risk for all-cause mortality and technique failure. Other higher dichotomized overhydration indicators and continuous hydration variables all indicated overhydration as a significant risk factor for all-cause mortality. Conclusion: Overhydration, defined by a higher ratio of ECW/TBW, might be an independent predictor for all-cause mortality and technique failure among PD patients. Background/Aims: Fluid overload is common and associated with morbidity and mortality in patients with end-stage renal disease. The relationship between fluid overload and cardiac function is complex, and whether fluid overload is associated with adverse outcomes in patients undergoing hemodialysis (HD) independently of systolic and diastolic function of the left ventricle (LV) remains unclear. Methods: The present study aimed to investigate the relationship between overhydration and all-cause and cardiovascular (CV) mortality after adjusting for LV function in 178 maintenance HD patients. The relative hydration status (overhydration/ extracellular water, ∆HS) was measured using a body composition monitor, and then used to assess the fluid status. A ∆HS ≥7% was defined as fluid overload. Global left ventricular longitudinal systolic strain (GLS), and the early filling and early diastolic mitral annular velocity (E/E') ratio were assessed using speckle-tracking and tissue Doppler echocardiography. Results: During a mean follow-up period of 2.7 years, 24 patients died, including 11 CV deaths. An increased ∆HS was significantly associated with all-cause and CV mortality in the univariate analysis. This prognostic significance remains after multivariate adjusting for GLS and E/E' ratio for all-cause (HR, 1.123; 95% CI, 1.063–1.186; p-value < 0.001) and CV (HR, 1.088; 95% CI, 1.005–1.178; p-value =0.037) mortality. Moreover, ∆HS significantly improved the prognostic value beyond conventional clinical and echocardiographic parameters. Conclusion: A higher ∆HS was independently associated with increased all-cause and CV mortality after adjusting for systolic and diastolic function of the LV. Background: Assessment of access recirculation (AR) is crucial to dialysis efficiency and there is thus a need for a method yielding a highly accurate, fast, easy and economical measurement that can be applied in any dialysis clinic. Non-urea based dilutional methods are more accurate than urea based methods and avoid problems with cardiopulmonary recirculation, but they require expensive specialized devices, which limit their applicability. Patients and Methods: We used simple dilutional method of AR based on the determination of serum potassium [K+] in two samples. A prospective study was performed in a Dialysis Unit at El Sahel Teaching hospital, Cairo, on End stage kidney disease patients on regular Hemodialysis through a functioning Arterio-venous fistula. Results: Access recirculation was found in 42% of studied patients. There were Highly Significant positive correlation between access recirculation, pre / post dialysis blood urea, basal k, and parathyroid hormone level. In addition, there were highly significant negative correlation between AR, Urea reduction ratio and KT/V. Conclusion and Recommendations: Potassium dilution method is one of the most simple, specific, and economical way to measure access recirculation and can easily be performed in any dialysis unit. Late-onset HC is a well-recognized complication associated with cyclophosphamide/acrolein-induced toxicity. It poses a management challenge when hyperhydration and bladder irrigation do not result in clinical improvement as desired. The data regarding use of hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBO2) as an early treatment modality in this clinical setting are limited. We present 2 cases, that were refractory to hyperhydration and bladder irrigation but responded to HBO2. They were treated with 20-30 daily sessions over weekdays with 100% oxygen for 90 minutes at 2 atmospheric pressure units (2 atm). Both patients reported improved symptoms within the first 15 sessions, and hematuria diminished by 20 sessions. Hyperbaric oxygen is a less invasive, outpatient therapy that is effective for treatment of HC and is tolerated well by young patients. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: Diaper dermatitis is the most common contact eczema present in early childhood. The main cause is an irritant reaction to urine and feces, which is facilitated by the occlusive conditions under the diaper, leading to hyperhydration of the stratum corneum (diaper dermatitis). In addition, diaper pressure and friction can increase the risk of skin inflammation, which also opens the skin up to other irritant agents, allergens, and infectious agents, such as candida albicans. However, a variety of diseases are associated with inflammation of the skin in the diaper region, therefore the term “diaper dermatitis” is merely descriptive and does not reflect anything about the etiopathogenesis. The term diaper dermatitis refers only to an inflammation in the diapering area and should not be automatically equated with reactions to diapers. Making the correct diagnosis requires a thorough examination of the skin in its entirety and a detailed report of the patient's medical and family history. Exertional heat illness and exercise-associated hyponatremia continue to be a problem in military and recreational events. Symptoms of hyponatremia can be mistaken for heat exhaustion or heat stroke. We describe three cases of symptomatic hyponatremia initially contributed to heat illnesses. The first soldier was a 31-yr-old female who "took a knee" at mile 6 of a 12-mile foot march. She had a core temperature of 100.9°F, a serum sodium level of 129 mmol/L, and drank approximately 4.5 quarts of water in 2 h. The second case was a 27-yr-old female soldier who collapsed at mile 11 of a 12-mile march. Her core temperature was 102.9°F and sodium level was 131 mmol/L. She drank 5 quarts in 2.5 h. The third soldier was a 27-yr-old male who developed nausea and vomiting while conducting an outdoor training event. His core temperature was 98.7°F and sodium level was 125 mmol/L. He drank 6 quarts in 2 h to combat symptoms of heat. All the three cases developed symptomatic hyponatremia by overconsumption of fluids during events lasting less than 3 h. Obtaining point-of-care serum sodium may improve recognition of hyponatremia and guide management for the patient with suspected heat illness and hyponatremia. Depending on severity of symptoms, exercise-associated hyponatremia can be managed by fluid restriction, oral hypertonic broth, or with intravenous 3% saline. Utilizing an ad libitum approach or limiting fluid availability during field or recreational events of up to 3 h may prevent symptomatic hyponatremia while limiting significant dehydration. Objective: We performed the present study to investigate the feto-maternal osmotic relationship at term with the hypothesis that, in contrast to the literature, maternal plasma osmolality is lower than fetal levels. In a previous study, we found that maternal plasma sodium at delivery was consistently lower than the sodium in the umbilical artery. Our aim was to corroborate these results with analysis of osmolality. Methods: Blood was sampled from 30 women immediately before cesarean section and from the umbilical artery and vein before cord clamping and osmolality, sodium and albumin were analyzed. Results: Maternal osmolality was (mean; 95% confidence interval) 287.0 (285.8–288.2) mOsmkg/kg, arterial cord osmolality was 289.4 (287.9–291.0) mOsm/kg and venous cord osmolality was 287.3 (286.0–288.5) mOsm/kg. The paired difference between maternal and umbilical arterial osmolality was mean (SD) −2.4 (3.3) mOsm/kg (P<0.001), between maternal and umbilical vein −0.3 (3.0) mOsm/kg (P=0.63) and between umbilical artery and vein −2.1 (2.8) mOsm/kg (P<0.001). Conclusion: Maternal osmolality was significantly lower than arterial cord osmolality confirming our previous results. The feto-maternal osmotic gradient favors water transport from the mother to the fetus and may increase the fetal risk of water intoxication when the mother ingests or is administered large volumes of electrolyte free solutions. Background/Aims: Protein energy wasting (PEW) is a common medical phenomenon that is observed in maintenance dialysis patients. PEW also increases morbidity and mortality of these patients. Its pathogenesis is unclear. We hypothesize that serum irisin levels and volume overload may induce PEW in peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients. The aim of this study is to measure serum irisin levels, evaluate volume status of PD patients, and study their correlations with PEW in PD patients. Methods: This study is a cross-sectional study with 160 PD patients from the PD center of Peking University Third Hospital and 35 healthy control subjects. PD patients were divided into PEW group and non-PEW group according to PEW diagnosis criteria. Serum irisin concentrations were measured by ELISA. Volume overload status (volume overload is defined as overhydration value ≥2 liters) of PD patients was analyzed by bioelectrical impedance. Results: The serum irisin levels were significantly lower in PD patients compared with those of the controls (113.2±11.8 ng/ml vs. 464.2±37.4 ng/ml, P<0.01). The serum irisin levels were lower in PD patients with PEW than those of the patients without PEW (106.5±15.2 ng/ml vs. 117.4±17.6 ng/ml, P<0.01). PEW is more prevalent in patients with volume overload than patients without volume overload (62.5% vs. 43.1%, χ²=5.756, P=0.016); however, no direct relationship was found between irisin levels and volume overload status. The independent influencing factors of PEW were serum irisin, serum albumin, and volume overload. Conclusion: Our results are the first to provide clinical evidence of the association between serum irisin, volume overload, and PEW in PD patients. Hyponatremia is defined as a plasma sodium concentration less than 135 or 130 mEq/L (or mmol/L) and may be responsible for life threatening symptoms that can be observed in a variety of medical conditions. Cases of fatal hyponatremia have been reported in both clinical and forensic literature in situations of water intoxication due to psychogenic polydipsia, amphetamine derivative drug intake, high-endurance exercise, iatrogenic causes, and exceptional cases of child abuse by forced water intoxication. Vitreous sodium levels have been determined to be relatively stable during the early postmortem period and similar to levels found in normal serum of living subjects. Nevertheless, there are relatively few cases of fatal hyponatremia described in literature that underwent exhaustive postmortem biochemical investigations. A case of fatal water intoxication in a psychiatric patient who underwent medicolegal investigations, including postmortem biochemistry, was chosen as a starting point to a literature review of deaths by hyponatremia that may be encountered in the forensic setting. Overhydration is a frequent complication in dialysis patients. It has been linked with hypertension, left ventricular hypertrophy, arterial stiffness, atherosclerosis uremic cardiomyopathy, and all-cause mortality or cardiovascular morbidity. In addition, predialysis underhydration is also associated with increased risk of death in ESRD patients. In this context, the optimal evaluation of hydration status is a must. However, this mission is not easy or accurate. In the last 10 years, several new methods have been tested in dialysis patients, particularly bioimpedance and lung ultrasonography. The precise clinical value of these techniques in the daily care of hemodialysis patients is not obvious yet. Sodium is also an important piece of this puzzle. Salt intake and/or removal of sodium during dialysis are essential determinants of optimal hydration status. Recent studies have revealed that salt and water homeostasis is also dependent of tissue sodium storage-increased in hemodialysis patients. Objective Hyponatraemia due to excessive fluid intake (ie primary polydipsia [ PP]) is common. It may culminate in profound hyponatraemia-carrying considerable risk of morbidity. However, data on patients with PP leading to hyponatraemia are lacking. Herein, we describe the characteristics of polydiptic patients hospitalized with profound hyponatraemia and assess 1-year outcomes. Design Substudy of the prospective observational Co- MED Study. Patients Patients with an episode of profound hyponatraemia (≤125 mmol/L) due to PP in the medical emergency were eligible and classified into psychogenic polydipsia (PsyP), dipsogenic polydipsia (DiP) and beer potomania ( BP). Measurements Symptoms, laboratory findings and factors contributing to hyponatraemia (comorbidities, medication and liquid intake) were assessed. A 1-year follow-up was performed to evaluate recurrence of hyponatraemia, readmission rate and mortality. Results Twenty-three patients were included (median age 56 years [ IQR 50-65], 74% female), seven had PsyP, eight had DiP and eight had BP. Median serum sodium of all patients was 121 mmol/L ( IQR 114-123), median urine osmolality 167 mmol/L ( IQR 105-184) and median copeptin 3.6 mmol/L ( IQR 1.9-5.5). Psychiatric diagnoses, particularly dependency disorder (43%) and depression (35%), were highly prevalent. Factors provoking hyponatraemia were found in all patients (eg acute water load, medication, stress). During the follow-up period, 67% of patients were readmitted, 52% of these with rehyponatraemia, and three patients (38%) with BP died. Conclusion Patients with PP are more likely to be female and to have addictive and affective disorders. Given the high recurrence, rehospitalization and mortality rate, careful monitoring and long-term follow-up including controls of serum sodium, education and behavioural therapy are needed. Background: Chronic fluid overload is common in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) and can with time lead to diastolic dysfunction and heart failure. We investigated whether markers of fluid status, such as NT-proBNP and bioimpedance spectroscopy (BIS), can predict echocardiographic findings of diastolic dysfunction in non-dialysis CKD5 patients. Methods: BIS, echocardiography, and measurement of serum NT-proBNP were performed in patients with non-dialysis CKD stage 5 at a single study visit. E/e´ ratio reflect mean LV diastolic pressure and a ratio greater than 15 was used as a definition of diastolic dysfunction. Results: Eighty-four patients were analyzed. Forty-six patients (54.76%) had E/e´ ratio ≤15 and 38 patients (45.24%) had E/e´ > 15 (diastolic dysfunction). Patients with E/e´>15 had significantly higher serum NT-proBNP (14,650 pg/mL) than patients with to E/e´≤15 (4,271 pg/mL) and had more overhydration (OH), 5.1 liters compared to 2.4 liters. The cut-off values predicting diastolic dysfunction were found to be 2,797 pg/mL for NT-proBNP and 2.45 liters for OH. Conclusions: Regular monitoring of fluid status by BIS and NT-proBNP can be used to find patient with risk of developing diastolic dysfunction. Treatments to correct fluid overload may reduce the risk of developing diastolic dysfunction and improve cardiovascular outcome in patients with CKD. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Haemodialysis (HD) patients are predisposed to dysregulated fluid balance leading to extracellular water (ECW) expansion. Fluid overload has been closely linked with outcome in these patients. This has mainly been attributed to cardiac volume overload, but the relation between abnormalities in fluid status with micro- and macrovascular dysfunction has not been studied in detail. We studied the interaction of macro- and microvascular factors in states of normal and over- hydration in HD-dependent CKD. Methods: Fluid compartments [total body water (TBW) and ECW] and overhydration index (OH) were measured with Multifrequency bio-impedance (BCM). Overhydration was defined as OH/ECW>7%. Overhydration was also assessed using the ECW/TBW ratio. Macrocirculation was assessed by pulse-wave velocity (PWV) and mean arterial pressure (MAP) measurements while microcirculation through sublingual capillaroscopy assessment of the Perfused Boundary Region of the endothelial glycocalyx (PBR 5-25mcg). A panel of pro-inflammatory and vascular serum biomarkers and growth factors was analysed. Results: Of 72 HD participants, 30 were in normohydration (N) range and 42 overhydrated according to the OH/ECW ratio. Average ECW/TBW was 0.48±0.03. Overhydrated patients had higher MAP (122.9±22.5 v 111.7±22.2mmHg, p = 0.04) and comorbidities (median Davies score 1.5 v 1.0, p = 0.03). PWV (p = 0.25) and PBR 5-25mcg (p = 0.97) did not differ between the 2 groups. However, Vascular Adhesion Molecule (VCAM)-1, Interleukin-6 and Thrombomodulin, and reduced Leptin were observed in the overhydrated group. Elevation in VCAM-1 levels (OR 1.03; 95% CI 1.01–1.06; p = 0.02) showed a strong independent association with OH/ECW>7% in an adjusted logistic regression analysis and exhibited a strong linear relationship with ECW/TBW (Bata = 0.210, p = 0.03) in an also adjusted model. Conclusion: Extracellular fluid overload is significantly linked to microinflammation and markers of endothelial dysfunction. Introduction: Fluid overload is one of the most important, yet modifiable, risk factors associated with worse outcomes in hemodialysis (HD) patients. However, its precise assessment in clinical practice is still under investigation. Material and methods: This is an observational prospective study which included 285 stable patients with end-stage renal disease on standard thrice-weekly HD therapy. Overhydration was assessed by the combination of relative fluid overload (RFO), using bioimpedance spectroscopy, and N-terminal pro-B-type natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP). The outcome of interest was all-cause mortality. Results: The median values for NT-proBNP and RFO were 4595 pg/ml and 6.9%, respectively. We divided the study population into four groups according to these median levels: group 1 - low NT-proBNP and low RFO; group 2 - high NT-proBNP and low RFO; group 3 - low NT-proBNP and high RFO; group 4 - high NT-proBNP and high RFO. During the follow-up (mean: 41.1, median: 48.7 months), 89 (31.2%) patients died. In the univariable Cox survival analysis only patients in group 4, and not those from group 2 or 3, had significantly higher HRs as compared to those in group 1 (HR = 1.5, 95% CI: 0.8-2.8, HR = 1.6, 95% CI: 0.8-2.9 and HR = 2.4, 95% CI: 1.3-4.2, for group 2, 3 and 4, respectively). Furthermore, these results were maintained in the multivariable Cox analysis. Conclusions: Including both bioimpedance and NT-proBNP monitoring in a more comprehensive fluid status assessment could improve the diagnosis of fluid overload with a final improvement in patients' outcome. The differential diagnosis of hyponatraemia is notoriously wide. However, only a minority is acute, ie develops in less than 48 hours. We describe an unusual cause of water intoxication due to toothache. A 30-year-old man with no medical history of note presented in an acute confusional state. Laboratory results disclosed profound hyponatraemia. Urinary indices were consistent with overdrinking, but in the absence of a reliable history, other aetiologies had to be excluded. Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs), ubiquitous compounds coming from incomplete combustion processes, are very toxic species and can cause serious effects on the human health. At authors' knowledge, studies on PAHs levels in surface waters are scarce: the main problem regards the analytical implications due to analyzing such compounds at very low levels. This paper would like to present a new extraction protocol based on Dispersive Liquid-Liquid MicroExtraction (DLLME) procedure followed by GC-IT/MS for simultaneous determination of nine PAHs in surface water. Iso -octane is used as extraction solvent whereas no dispersive solvent is involved. An important issue regarded the procedure to obtain the emulsion without dispersive solvent but using ultrasounds; the other important novelty of this method of extraction regards the enrichment factors, that were demonstrated to be significantly high (up to 100,000). Methodological parameters such as the volume of surface water sample, the extraction solvent and relative volume, the time required for breaking emulsion and the salting-out effect have been investigated. Under the optimum experimental conditions (1 L-volume of surface water sample, 300 μL of isooctane as extraction solvent, 2 min-ultrasound for the emulsion and 10 minutes-agitation for breaking the emulsion, nitrogen stream for concentrating up to 10 μL, analysis by GC-IT/MS) the method provides very good correlation coefficients (R 2 > 0.99) in the range investigated, LODs and LOQs able to analyze such compounds in any water matrix (0.001–0.009 pg μL − 1 and 0.003–0.022 pg μL − 1 , respectively), recoveries ranging 97–108%, inter- and intra-day precisions below 6.0% and 8.2%, respectively, for all PAHs. A comparison with other methods reported in literature demonstrates the reliability of such easy, cost-effective and reproducible methods.
