The thermal phase transitions of a spin-1/2 Ising-Heisenberg model on the diamond-decorated square lattice in a magnetic field are investigated using a decoration-iteration transformation and classical Monte Carlo simulations. A generalized decoration-iteration transformation maps this model exactly onto an effective classical Ising model on the square lattice with temperature-dependent effective nearest-neighbor interactions and magnetic field strength. The effective field vanishes along a ground-state phase boundary of the original model, separating a ferrimagnetic and a quantum monomer-dimer phase. At finite temperatures this phase boundary gives rise to an exactly solvable surface of discontinuous (first-order) phase transitions, which terminates in a line of Ising critical points. The existence of discontinuous reentrant phase transitions within a narrow parameter regime is reported and explained in terms of the low-energy excitations from both phases. These exact results, obtained from the mapping to the zero-field effective Ising model are corroborated by classical Monte Carlo simulations of the effective model., Comment: 17 pages, 15 figures

Research efforts on the low temperature magnetic order and electronic properties of U$_3$O$_8$ have been inconclusive so far. Reinterpreting neutron scattering results, we use group representation theory to show that the ground state presents collinear out-of-plane magnetic moments, with antiferromagnetic coupling both in-layer and between layers. Charge localization relieves the initial geometric frustration, generating a slightly distorted honeycomb sublattice with N\'eel order. We show, furthermore, that spin-orbit coupling has a giant effect on the conduction band states and band gap value. Uranium dioxide (UO2) is the main component of nuclear fuels. This compound is very susceptible to oxidation, which results in the formation of the mixed-valence oxide U3O8. [1] From an application point of view, this interest relates to the safe and sustainable management of nuclear fuel. Our goal is an understanding of this oxidation process at the atomic level, using ab initio electronic structure calculations. The focus of this work lies in the early oxidation of stoichiometric UO2, where excess oxygen can be treated as interstitial point defects. In order to study this oxidation we investigate the adsorption of the O atom and oxygen-containing molecules (O2, H2O, H2O2) on the three most stable UO2 surfaces ((111), (110), and (100)). The calculations are performed within DFT, using PBE+U including spin-orbit coupling and taking into account the non-collinear 3k (transverse) magnetic ground state. Dissociative adsorption is found for H2O and H2O2 on the (111) and (100) UO2 surfaces respectively, forming hydroxyl groups on the surface. Adsorption on the UO2 surface lowers the barrier for the dissociation of O2. The defect formation energy is calculated for interstitial oxygen, up to several layers into the material starting from the surface. Additionally, adsorption energies are studied as a function of temperature and partial pressure.

and presentation of a contributed talk at the MRS 2022 Spring Meeting in Symposium SF01: Materials Research Needs to Advance Nuclear Fuels, Structural Materials and Wasteforms ---Abstract--- The principal type of nuclear fuel material, which remains widely used today, is uranium dioxide (UO2). After discharge from a nuclear reactor some sort of disposal scenario needs to be considered to manage the spent fuel in a sustainable and safe way during extensive periods of time. However, in most countries which employ(ed) commercial nuclear energy, no political decision has yet been made, leading to prolonged intermediate storage periods up to several decades. As a result, oxidation and corrosion reactions due to accidental interaction between air, water, or moisture and the spent fuel need to be considered and understood. The response of conventional nuclear fuel to oxidation and corrosion is determined mainly by the physico-chemical properties of uranium. The binary uranium-oxygen system displays a very complex landscape of oxide phase fields. At temperatures below about 450 °C two single-valence compounds, uranium(IV) oxide (UO2) and uranium(VI) oxide (UO3), and several mixed-valence compounds (U4O9, U3O7, U3O8) can occur [1-4], characterized by particular associations of oxygen interstitials and vacancies. At higher temperature, long-range correlations among defects become less effective and the phase diagram becomes simpler, displaying a wide phase domain of nonstoichiometric UO2±x [5]. A characteristic feature of these higher oxide compounds lies in their crystallographic modifications, which occur almost exclusively in the anion sublattice, where point defects arrange into larger clusters to form complex long-range ordered structures [6-8]. However, despite sustained efforts for almost a century, the transition and structural relations between the different compounds is yet to be fully understood. New perspectives on the oxidation behavior of UO2 were obtained by investigating the kinetic mechanisms of these materials at the nanoscale, where fundamental differences were reported compared to the macroscale observations. Recent breakthroughs were made possible by using nanoscale imaging techniques like transmission electron microscopy [9], and by evaluating atomistic models of crystal structures [8,10,11]. A key instrument has been the application of neutron scattering techniques, owing to its sensitivity towards the anion sublattice [10], and its selectivity in probing magnetic transitions [12] and the local structure [13]. In this contribution we will report our current understanding of the uranium oxide systems U3O7 and U3O8 in ground state, based on latest neutron scattering data and ab-initio calculations. Oxidation of uranium dioxide (UO2) nuclear fuel occurs under normal operation and is most evident at high burnup levels or during accident conditions. The excess oxygen is incorporated into the fluorite structure and the resulting atomic-scale defect configuration significantly influences important bulk properties such as thermal conductivity and fission gas release. Previous experimental and modelling efforts have proposed distinct oxygen defect cluster configurations; however, most characterization techniques lack sensitivity to the local atomic structure or the oxygen sublattice and the resulting data cannot be used to validate predicted defect clusters. Here, we present results on single-phase UO2+x systems (x = 0.07 and 0.15) combining advanced experimental and modelling techniques to create high fidelity atomistic models of the oxygen defect clusters. In situ high-temperature neutron total scattering measurements with high sensitivity to the oxygen sublattice were performed at the Nanoscale-Ordered Materials Diffractometer (NOMAD) instrument at the Spallation Neutron Source (Oak Ridge National Laboratory). The data acquired at 600 °C and 1000 °C were analyzed via Reverse Monte Carlo modelling techniques which consider both the long- and short-range structures. The analysis reveals evolving behavior as a function of oxygen content with simple clusters in the low O:M regime (UO2.07) and more complex, extended defects for higher oxygen concentrations (UO2.15). Our findings have implications in improving and validating potentials for Molecular Dynamics simulations to advance larger fuel performance codes.

Cerium, praseodymium, and terbium stand out among other rare-earth systems because they exhibit two possible oxidation states that produce a series of anion deficient phases that are fluorite-related and have a generic formula Ln_nO_2n-2. Since the seminal works of Eyring, and the valuable contributions of many other scientists, many of the occurring phases were determined using scattering techniques. It was then possible to propose a paradigm for the particular oxygen vacancy order that is observed in most of these phases We would like to discuss how the structural characteristics of these systems can affect their radiation tolerance. In this contribution, we analyze using Bader’s analysis the charge density and the chemical bonds of the A-type, B-type, and the iota phase, which corresponds to the generic compound formula with n=7. Then we try to correlate these results with irradiation experiments on simple lanthanide oxides and with the behavior of the broad family of delta phases that are pseudo-binary compounds with generic formulas A_6BO_12 or A_4B_3O_12 that share many structural features.

The many body quantum problem size grows factorially with respect to the number of elements. In order to treat solids, the DFT uses approximations to reduce the complexity of the problem. However, some materials present properties that are not correctly described by these approximations. This is due to the presence of strong correlations, which are not well taken into account by the standard approximations of DFT.Different methods have been developed to deal with these strong correlations. Some of these methods (DFT+U and DFT+DMFT) propose to calculate exactly the electronic interactions between the electrons of the system which present the most important correlations. These methods require to know the value of the effective interaction between correlated electrons. We use the cRPA, which takes into account the screening effects in materials, to calculate the value of effective interactions.We set up a new implementation of the cRPA allowing to calculate the effective interactions within several correlated orbitals per system. This implementation is then tested against results from the literature. Finally, the calculation of selfconsistent effective interactions in DFT+U /cRPA, leads us to evaluate the relevance of taking into account the correlations on the p-orbitals of the oxygens in the oxides. We show the importance of the choice of correlated orbitals used in DFT+U and we propose, on a physical basis, to use Wannier functions., La résolution du problème à N-corps quantique est un problème dont la taille augmente factoriellement avec le nombre d'élements. Afin de traiter les solides, la DFT utilise des approximations afin de réduire la complexité du problème. Cependant, certains matériaux présentent des propriétés qui ne sont pas décrites correctement par ces approximations. Cela est dû à la présence de fortes corrélations, mal prises en compte par les approximations standards de la DFT.Différentes méthodes ont été developpées afin de traiter ces fortes corrélations. Certaines de ces méthodes (DFT+U et DFT+DMFT) proposent de calculer exactement les interactions électroniques entre les électrons du système qui présentent les corrélations les plus importantes. Ces méthodes nécessitent pour cela de connaître la valeur de l'interaction effective entre électrons corrélés. On utilise la cRPA, qui prend en compte les effets d'écrantage dans les matériaux afin de calculer la valeur des interactions effectives.Nous mettons en place une nouvelle implémentation de la cRPA permettant de calculer les interactions effectives au sein de plusieurs orbitales corrélées par système. Cette implémentation est ensuite testée par rapport à des résultats de la littérature. Enfin, le calcul d'interactions effectives auto-cohérentes en DFT+U /cRPA nous pousse à évaluer la pertinence de la prise en compte des corrélations sur les orbitales p des oxygènes dans les oxydes. On montre l'importance du choix des orbitales corrélées utilisées en DFT+U et nous proposons sur la base d'arguments physiques, l'utilisation de fonctions de Wannier.

Structural changes produced by irradiation have been extensively studied in compounds derived from the parent fluorite structure where cations are initially ordered and in systems where both sub-lattices do not display long-range order. The irradiation behaviour of fluorite-related oxide systems where the cations are randomly distributed but the anions are highly ordered is not quantitatively explored yet. We report on a model system Gd2Ce2O7, with a randomly occupied cation sub-lattice while an ordered anion sublattice. This compound crystallizes in a new bixbyite-type symmetry where O vacancies order on half of the vacant sites of the ideal bixbyite structure. Swift heavy ion irradiation experiments and quantitative x-ray diffraction analysis were used to study the separate response of the anion sub-lattice to radiation. We show that the topological disorder on the anion sub-lattice grows faster than that on the cation sub-lattice. While a decrease in strain is observed as a function of fluence, the variance of the strain increases due to an increase of the microdomain wall density.

Frustrated quantum magnets have received a lot of attention in the past decades for they are expected to host exotic magnetic states such as quantum spin liquids exhibiting fractionalized excitations and topological properties. One way to study these spin liquid phases is to perform a parton construction of the quantum Heisenberg Hamiltonian. This mean-field method has the valuable advantage of treating magnetically ordered states and spin-liquid states on an equal footing. In this thesis, we have employed such a method based on the Schwinger boson mean-field theory (SBMFT) to study two magnetically frustrated systems. After a brief introduction of the core concepts behind frustrated magnetic systems in chapter 1 we will introduce the Schwinger boson theory and the associated numerical tools in chapter 2. In chapter 3, we will present the full phase diagram of the J1-J2 Heisenberg model on the square-kagome lattice with a particurlarly interesting ground state in the form of a topological nematic spin liquid. We will then make connections with a recently synthesized compound exhibiting perfect square-kagome geometry. In the final chapter of this manuscript, we will turn to the J1-J2-J3 Heisenberg model on the kagome lattice in the case where J2=J3=J. Once again, a full phase diagram is obtained thanks to our SBMFT self-consistent procedure. It is composed of three distinct ground states: a chiral spin liquid for J1/2 and a symmetric spin liquid in between. Finally, we will make connections with previous quantum and classical works, especially by discussing the presence of half-moon patterns in the static structure factor of an excited state of the model for J>1/2. In conclusion, we have revealed both rich and complex phase diagrams presenting various exotic spin-liquid states on the two frustrated systems studied in this manuscript., Le magnétisme quantique frustré a attiré beaucoup d'attention au cours des dernières décennies, en particulier due à la possibilité de trouver des systèmes hébergeant des états magnétiques exotiques tels que des liquides de spin quantiques présentant des excitations fractionnaires et des propriétés topologiques. Une manière d'étudier ces phases liquides de spins est d'effectuer une construction en parton de l'hamiltonien d'Heisenberg quantique. Cette méthode de type champ moyen possède le précieux avantage de traiter sur un pied d'égalité les états magnétiquement ordonnés et les états de type liquide de spin. Dans le cadre de cette thèse, nous avons employé une telle méthode basée sur la théorie des bosons de Schwinger en champ moyen (SBMFT) afin d'étudier deux systèmes magnétiquement frustrés. Après une brève introduction de concepts fondamentaux en frustration magnétique dans le chapitre 1, nous présenterons la théorie des bosons de Schwinger et les outils numériques associés dans le chapitre 2. Dans le chapitre 3, nous présenterons le diagramme de phase complet du modèle de Heisenberg J1-J2 sur le réseau square-kagome. Ce dernier comporte un état fondamental particulièrement intéressant: un liquide de spin nématique et topologique. Nous établirons ensuite des liens avec un composé récemment synthétisé présentant une géométrie square-kagome parfaite. Dans le dernier chapitre de ce manuscrit, nous nous tournerons vers le modèle de Heisenberg J1-J2 -J3 sur le réseau kagome dans le cas où J2=J3=J. Une fois encore, un diagramme de phase complet est obtenu grâce à notre procédure SBMFT auto-cohérente. Il est composé de trois états fondamentaux distincts : un liquide de spin chiral pour J1/2 et un liquide de spin régulier dans la région intermédiaire. Nous établirons enfin des liens avec les précédentes études quantiques et classiques, notamment en discutant de la présence de motifs en demi-lune dans le facteur de structure statique d'un état excité du modèle pour J>1/2. En conclusion, nous avons révélé des diagrammes de phase à la fois riches et complexes présentant divers états exotiques de type liquide de spin sur les deux systèmes frustrés étudiés dans ce manuscrit.

This thesis is dedicated to the experimental study of new effective spin S=1/2 rare-earth based frustrated quantum magnets using magnetization measurements, neutron and muon spectroscopies. The common thread of this body of experimental work is to understand the effect of random disorder on the exotic quantum states of these highly frustrated rare earth based magnets. Motivated by the recent discovery of the new quantum triangular magnet YbMgGaO₄ –which shows controversial experimental signatures of spin liquid behavior in the presence of strong chemical disorder –, we first investigate the sister compound ErMgGaO₄ of the same structural family in order to shed new light on the effect of disorder on their magnetic properties. We confirmed the single-ion anisotropy already reported on single-crystal and further detected the signature of a striped-order state at T = 2.5K from elastic neutron scattering. Furthermore, neutron and muon spectroscopies both showed the existence of persistent dynamics in the form of a quasi-elastic continuum and a constant muon spin relaxation rate down to 25 mK. Its spin liquid behavior may originate from the superposition of all the possible degenerate stripe-ordered phases, separated by a small energy barrier, which can be overcome by thermal fluctuations or quantum tunneling. Our results pave the way to the understanding of the ubiquitous spin fluctuations in the context of rare-earth frustrated magnets with strong disorder. Alternatively, we focus on new Yb-based quantum triangular magnets, with a perfect triangular lattice and without any detectable disorder, to search for other quantum spin liquid candidates. Finally, we investigate the new pyrochlore series Yb₂(Ti₍₁₋ₓ₎Zrₓ)₂O₇, where the substitution of Zr on the Ti site is used as chemical pressure to destabilize the magnetic order observed for the pure, x=0, parent compound, and explored the evolution of the spin dynamics in the vicinity of this peculiar x=0 phase in zero and in applied magnetic fields. A detailed modelling of our inelastic neutron scattering results on the x=0 and Zr-substituted samples may hold the key for understanding the mechanism that turns the splayed ferromagnetic order into a fluctuating spin liquid regime, perhaps because of a strong scattering of magnons caused by random disorder. It provides a strong constrain to any theoretical model trying to address the origin of the continuum of scattering in disordered rare-earth frustrated systems., Cette thèse est dédiée à l’étude expérimentale de nouveaux matériaux quantiques frustrés à base de terre rare de spin effectif S=1/2, par mesures d’aimantation et de susceptibilité magnétique, ainsi que par spectrocopies de neutrons et de muons. Le dénominateur commun de l’ensemble de ce travail expérimental est la compréhension de l’effet d’un désordre aléatoire sur les états quantiques exotiques présents dans ces composés frustrés à base de terre rare. Motivés par la récente découverte du nouveau composé triangulaire YbMgGaO₄ – qui montrent des signatures expérimentales d’un état de liquide de spin quantique en présence d’un désordre chimique important - nous étudions d’abord le composé iso-structural ErMgGaO₄ afin de mettre à jour les effets du désordre sur les propriétés magnétiques dans cette famille de composés. Nous confirmons l’anisotropie de l’ion magnétique Er³⁺ (1) rapportée par des mesures précédentes sur monocristal et mettons en évidence l’existence d’un ordre de spin modulé de type « stripe » en dessous de T = 2.5 K d’après les mesures de diffusion élastique de neutrons. De plus, les spectroscopies de neutrons et de muons démontrent l’existence de fluctuations de spins qui persistent jusqu’à 25 mK, d’après la présence d’un continuum (intensité quasi-élastique) en diffusion de neutrons et d’un taux de relaxation constant en spectroscopie de muons. Ce comportement de liquide de spin est peut-être dû à la superposition de tous les états dégénérés des ordres modulés de spin, séparés par une faible qui peut alors être franchie grâce aux fluctuations thermiques ou bien par effet tunnel. Cette hypothèse pourrait permettre de mieux comprendre les fluctuations de spins quasi-omniprésentes dans les composés frustrés à base de terre-rare en présence d’un désordre important. Dans une approche alternative, nous avons également étudié de nouveaux composés quantiques triangulaires à base d’ytterbium, qui présentent un réseau triangulaire régulier et sans la présence de désordre détectée, afin de rechercher de nouveaux candidats expérimentaux à l’état de liquide de spin quantique. Enfin, nous avons sondé les propriétés d’une nouvelle famille de pyrochlore, Yb₂(Ti₍₁₋ₓ₎Zrₓ)₂O₇, dans laquelle la substitution du Zr sur le site du Ti induit une pression chimique qui déstabilise l’ordre magnétique observé dans le composé parent x=0 et avons suivi l’évolution de la dynamique de spin par diffusion inélastique de neutrons pour différentes valeurs x, en champ magnétique nul et appliqué. La compréhension fine de nos résultats expérimentaux de spectroscopie neutronique pourrait permettre de mieux comprendre le mécanisme responsable de la transition d’un état ordonné ferromagnétique (x=0) vers un état de type liquide de spin, par exemple à cause de la diffusion des magnons causée par un désordre aléatoire. Nos résultats fournissent une base solide pour de futurs modèles théoriques dédiés à la compréhension de l’origine d’un continuum d’excitations dans les composés frustrés désordonnés à base de terre rare.

Progress in advanced fuels and waste forms requires unprecedented control of the design and organization of systems at the micro, meso, and nanoscale. In the last years, weberite-type oxides with the general formula A3BO7 (where A is a trivalent rare earth element and B is a pentavalent cation, such as Ta, Nb) have sparked interest in a number of technological applications due to their chemical and structural flexibility, which leads to a broad spectrum of physical properties, such as high ionic conductivity, ferroelectricity, and photocatalytic activity. In addition, weberite-type oxides have recently been linked to pyrochlore oxides (A2B2O7) because they share similar atomic building blocks that form after exposure to swift heavy ions. Here, we present a comprehensive ion irradiation study on weberite-type tantalate oxides (A3TaO7, A = Pr, Tb, Dy, Y, Yb), covering three major structural classes characterized by different long-range symmetries and organizations at the nano and mesoscale. Irradiation experiments were performed using 1.6 GeV Au ions at the X0 beamline of the GSI Helmholtz Center (Darmstadt, Germany). Samples were analyzed using the neutron total scattering technique at the Nanoscale-Ordered Materials (NOMAD) beamline at Oak Ridge National Laboratory and X-ray diffraction at the Advanced Photon Source (APS) at Argonne National Laboratory, respectively. The data analysis establishes a link between the material resistance to amorphization and the A-site cation ionic radius: smaller cations enhance radiation resistance to amorphization. Analyses of the neutron pair distribution function (PDF) establish that the pristine (unirradiated) local organization in these materials is a critical factor: indeed, ion beams are more susceptible to destroying the long-range order in orthorhombic Pr3TaO7 (Cmcm) than in Tb3TaO7 (Ccmm). Cubic Yb3TaO7 (an Fm-3m oxygen-deficient fluorite) does not display any long-range organization of the cations and vacancies though it does at the nanoscale: this system shows the highest radiation resistance and only extremes radiation levels trigger, besides a minor amorphization, the transformation another cubic structure, which was previously reported only during swift heavy ion irradiation of lanthanide sesquioxides (A2O3).

The spin-1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the frustrated diamond-decorated square lattice is known to feature various zero-field ground-state phases, consisting of extended monomer-dimer and dimer-tetramer ground states as well as a ferrimagnetic regime. Using a combination of analytical arguments, density matrix renormalization group (DMRG), exact diagonalization, as well as sign-problem-free quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) calculations, we investigate the properties of this system and the related Lieb lattice in the presence of a finite magnetic field, addressing both the ground-state phase diagram as well as several thermodynamic properties. In addition to the zero-field ground states, we find at high magnetic field a spin-canted phase with a continuously rising magnetization for increasing magnetic field strength, as well as the fully polarized paramagnetic phase. At intermediate field strength, we identify a first-order quantum phase transition line between the ferrimagnetic and the monomer-dimer regime. This first-order line extends to finite temperatures, terminating in a line of critical points that belong to the universality class of the two-dimensional Ising model., Comment: 16 pages, 17 figures; published version

This thesis focuses on the intrinsic scattering of phonons by a general quantum degree of freedom, i.e. a fluctuating field Q with a priori completely general correlations, constrained only by unitarity and translational invariance. The scattering rates induced by this interaction are computed using quantum scattering theory. The phonon non-equilibrium dynamics is studied via kinetic theory and Boltzmann’s equation.The computed scattering rates involve two- and four-point correlation functions of the Q field. We obtain general and explicit forms for these correlations which isolate the contributions to the Hall conductivity. We then evaluate these correlation functions, and hence the thermal transport, in the case of a general interaction between one phonon and two free fields. We treat both the bosonic and the fermionic cases.We then consider the illustrative example of an ordered two-dimensional antiferromagnet. In this case the Q field is the most general composite of two magnon operators arising from spin-strain coupling allowed by the symmetries. Thermal conductivity in this model is studied both analytically and numerically, and evidence is shown of a non-vanishing phonon Hall effect.So as to clarify the role of correlations in a magnetically disordered phase, we finally consider the case of a spinon Fermi surface U(1) spin liquid. In this case the Q field is a composite of two spinon operators. We propose a model of spin-phonon coupling which leads to non-vanishing thermal Hall conductivity., Dans cette thèse, l’on étudie la diffusion intrinsèque des phonons par un degré de liberté quantique générique, c’est-à-dire un champ Q dont les corrélations, a priori complètement générales, sont restreintes uniquement par l’unitarité et l’invariance par translation. Les taux de diffusion résultant de cette interaction sont calculés via la théorie quantique de la diffusion. La dynamique hors d’équilibre des phonons, elle, est étudiée via la théorie cinétique et l’équation de Boltzmann. Les taux de diffusion obtenus font intervenir des fonctions de corrélation à deux et quatre points du champ Q. Nous obtenons des formes générales et explicites pour ces corrélations, qui isolent les contributions spécifiques à la conductivité de Hall. Nous calculons ensuite explicitement ces fonctions de corrélation, et les conductivités thermiques qui en résultent, pour une interaction générique entre un phonon et deux opérateurs libres, bosoniques d’une part, fermioniques d’autre part.Afin d’illustrer ce formalisme par l’exemple, nous considérons le cas d’un matériau antiferromagnétique 2D. Q est alors un opérateur à deux magnons, issu d’un couplage entre les spins et le réseau aussi général que possible compte tenu des symétries. Nous étudions analytiquement et numériquement la conductivité thermique dans ce modèle, et mettons en évidence un effet Hall phononique. Pour élucider le rôle des corrélations dans une phase magnétiquement désordonnée, nous considérons enfin le cas d’une surface de Fermi dans un liquide de spin U(1). Q est alors un opérateur à deux spinons. Nous proposons un modèle de couplage spin-phonon rendant compte d’un effet Hall thermique.

The RMn₂O₅ compounds form a family of type II multiferroics, which has already been characterized from a structural point of view or for its macroscopic properties. This thesis aims at complementing these investigations by studying the dynamics. We will focus in particular on the measurement and characterization of spin-lattice excitations called electromagnons, which are collective modes of a magnetic nature, sensitive to the application of an electric field (for example that of light). Electromagnons have already been measured in the past for many materials, including some members of the RMn₂O₅ family (R=Y, Tb). This thesis has allowed to measure another one in GdMn₂O₅, to characterize it in details by combining measurements of inelastic neutrons scattering (3-axis, polarized, under H field or as a function of temperature) and infrared spectroscopy (as a function of temperature for different combinations (E,H) of incident light or under the action of an electric field).These experimental results will be detailed along this manuscript, and we will then propose a discussion on the mechanisms that could be at the origin of the measured electromagnon., Les composés RMn₂O₅ forment une famille de multiferroïques de type II, qui ont déjà été caractérisés ultérieurement du point de vue structural ou par les propriétés macroscopiques. Cette thèse a pour objectif de venir compléter ces investigations par l'étude de la dynamique. Nous nous concentrerons en particulier sur la mesure et caractérisation d'excitations spins-réseau nommées électromagnon, qui sont des modes collectifs de nature magnétique sensible à l'application d'un champ électrique (par exemple celui de la lumière). Des électromagnons ont déjà été mesurés dans le passé pour de nombreux matériaux, y compris pour certains membres de la famille des RMn₂O₅ (R=Y, Tb). Cette thèse aura permis d'en mesurer un autre dans GdMn₂O₅ et de le caractériser en détail en combinant des mesures de neutrons inélastiques (3 axes, polarisés, sous champ H ou en fonction de la température) et de spectroscopie infrarouge (en fonction de la température pour différentes combinaisons (E,H) de la lumière incidente ou sous l'action d'un champ électrique). Ces résultats expérimentaux seront détaillés le long de ce manuscrit, et nous proposerons ensuite une discussion sur les mécanismes pouvant être susceptibles d'être à l'origine de l'électromagnon mesuré.

Corrosion of nuclear fuel (UO2) leads to the formation of higher-order oxides up to U3O8. In order to study this oxidation, we investigate the adsorption of the O atom and oxygen-containing molecules (O2, H2O, H2O2) on the three most stable UO2 sur- faces ((111), (110), and (100)). The calculations are performed within DFT, using PBE+U including spin-orbit coupling and taking into account the non-collinear 3k (transverse) magnetic ground state.Dissociative adsorption is found for H2O and H2O2 on the (111) and (100) UO2 surfaces respectively, forming hydroxyl groups on the surface. Adsorption on the UO2 surface lowers the barrier to dissociation of O2. Defect formation energy is calculated for interstitial oxygen, up to several layers into the material starting from the surface. Diffusion energy barriers are presented. Adsorption energies are also studied as a function of temperature and partial pressure.

We present a detailed study of the field-dependent specific heat of the bimetallic ferromagnetically coupled chain compound MnNi(NO$_2$)$_4$(en)$_2$, en = ethylenediamine. For this material, which in zero field orders antiferromagnetically below $T_N=2.45$ K, small fields suppress magnetic order. Instead, in such fields a double-peak like structure in the temperature dependence of the specific heat is observed. We attribute this behavior to the existence of an acoustic and an optical mode in the spin wave dispersion as result of the existence of two different spins per unit cell. We compare our experimental data to numerical results for the specific heat obtained by exact diagonalization and Quantum-Monte-Carlo simulations for the alternating spin chain model, using parameters that have been derived from the high-temperature behavior of the magnetic susceptibility. The interchain coupling is included in the numerical treatment at the mean-field level. We observe remarkable agreement between experiment and theory, including the ordering transition, using previously determined parameters. Furthermore, the observed strong effect of an applied magnetic field on the ordered state of MnNi(NO$_2$)$_4$(en)$_2$ promises interesting magnetocaloric properties., Comment: ca. 25 pages including 18 figures

One of the signatures of the face-centered cubic (fcc) antiferromagnet as a typical example of a geometrically frustrated system is the large ground state degeneracy of the classical nearest neighbor and next-nearest neighbor Heisenberg (isotropic) model on this lattice. In particular, collinear states are degenerate with non-collinear and non-coplanar ones: this degeneracy is accidental and is expected to be lifted by anisotropic exchange interactions. In this work, we derive the most general nearest and next-nearest neighbor exchange model allowed by the space-group symmetry of the noncentrosymmetric half-Heusler compounds, which includes three anisotropic terms: the so-called Kitaev, Gamma and Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions -- most notably, the latter is allowed by the breaking of inversion symmetry in these materials and has not been previously been studied in the context of the fcc lattice. We compute the resulting phase diagram and show how the different terms lift the ground state degeneracy of the isotropic model, and lay emphasis on finding regimes where multi-q (non-collinear/non-coplanar) states are selected by anisotropy. We then discuss the role of quantum fluctuations and the coupling to a magnetic field in the ground state selection, and show that these effects can stabilize non-coplanar (triple-q) states. These results suggest that some half-Heusler antiferromagnets might host rare non-collinear/non-coplanar orders, which may in turn explain the unusual transport properties detected in these semimetals., Comment: 20 pages, 10 figures, 4 tables

In this article, we develop a description of topological pumps as slow classical dynamical variables coupled by a quantum system. We discuss the cases of quantum Hall pumps, Thouless pumps, and the more recent Floquet pumps based frequency converters. This last case corresponds to a quantum topological coupling between classical modes described by action-angle variables on which we focus. We propose a realization of such a topological coupler based on a superconducting qutrit suitably driven by three modulated drives. A detailed experimental protocol allowing to measure the quantized topological power transfer between the different modes of a superconducting circuit is discussed., Physical Review Research, 4 (1), ISSN:2643-1564

Cuprates are materials that have attracted a lot of attention when it was discovered that they become superconducting at temperatures above the boiling point of nitrogen. Since then, a large amount of experimental and theoretical works have been devoted to the understanding of the phase diagram of these materials. One of the main controversial point is the nature of the state from which superconductivity emerges, the pseudogap. Indeed, it defies the Fermi liquid theory for metals and presents a series of competing electronic instabilities that are difficult to disentangle. In this thesis, I present a new idea to describe the pseudogap phase and the superconducting transition within the framework of fractionalization. The recent observation of Pair Density Wave, i.e. modulated particle-particle pairs, on top of the usual Cooper pairing from conventional superconductivity shows that translation symmetry and pairing are both important to the physics of cuprates. Our idea is based on the fact that this Pair Density Wave is difficult to stabilize, due to multiple reasons such as disorder, and that the system will thus break it down into uniform particle-particle pairs that will condense in the superconducting state and modulated particlehole pairs that will break the translation symmetry. This fractionalization has strong consequences on the electronic and phononic degrees of freedom that we show matches the puzzling experimental observations in the pseudogap phase. The idea that modulated particle-particle pairs can contribute to the electrical transport outside the pseudogap phase is also explored to explain the anomalous “strange metal” phase above the optimal doping., Les cuprates supraconducteurs désignent une classe de matériaux qui ont attiré beaucoup d’attention lorsqu’il a été découvert qu’ils devenaient supraconducteurs à une température supérieure à celle de l’azote liquide. Depuis lors, une quantité importante de travaux, théoriques et expérimentaux, ayant pour but de comprendre le diagramme de phase de ces matériaux ont été conduits. Cependant, il n’y a aujourd’hui toujours pas de consensus sur la nature de la phase de laquelle la supraconductivité émerge, appelée pseudogap. Cette phase n’est pas décrite par la théorie des liquides de Fermi et présente de multiples autres instabilités électroniques en compétition qui sont difficiles à réconcilier dans un seul cadre théorique. Dans cette thèse, je présente une nouvelle idée pour décrire le pseudogap et la phase supraconductrice associée en utilisant le principe de la fractionnalisation. L’observation récente d’Onde de Densité de Paires, c’est-à-dire de paires électronélectron modulées dans l’espace, nous apprend que la symétrie par translation est, elle aussi, brisée dans le pseudogap. Notre idée est donc que ces Ondes de Densité de Paires sont fractionnalisées en paires électron-électron uniformes, qui sont à l’origine de l’état supraconducteur, et en paires électron-trou modulées qui sont responsables de la brisure de la symétrie par translation. Cette fractionnalisation a de nombreuses conséquences sur les propriétés électroniques qui correspondent aux observations expérimentales faites dans le pseudogap. La présence de ces paires électron-électron présentant une modulation spatiale peut aussi expliquer certains résultats inhabituels sur le transport électrique dans le régime sur-dopé.

International audience; Hybridization between f electrons and conduction bands (c-f hybridization) is a driving force for many unusual phenomena. To provide insight into it, systematic studies of CeCoIn5 heavy fermion superconductor have been performed by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) in a large angular range at temperature of T = 6 K. The used photon energy of 122 eV corresponds to Ce 4d-4f resonance. Calculations carried out with relativistic multiple scattering Korringa-Kohn-Rostoker method and one-step model of photoemission yielded realistic simulation of the ARPES spectra indicating that Ce-In surface termination prevails. Surface states, which have been identified in the calculations, contribute significantly to the spectra. Effects of the hybridization strongly depend on wave vector. They include a dispersion of heavy electrons and bands gaining f-electron character when approaching Fermi energy. We have also observed a considerable variation of felectron spectral weight at EF , which is normally determined by both matrix element effects and wave vector dependent c-f hybridization. Fermi surface scans covering a few Brillouin zones revealed large matrix element effects. A symmetrization of experimental Fermi surface, which reduces matrix element contribution, yielded a specific variation of 4f-electron enhanced spectral intensity at EF aroundΓ andM points. Tight-binding approximation calculations for Ce-In plane provided the same universal distribution of 4f-electron density for a range of values of the parameters used in the model.

We present a theory of optimal topological textures in nonlinear sigma-models with degrees of freedom living in the Grassmannian $\mathrm{Gr}(M,N)$ manifold. These textures describe skyrmion lattices of $N$-component fermions in a quantising magnetic field, relevant to the physics of graphene, bilayer and other multicomponent quantum Hall systems near integer filling factors $��>1$. We derive analytically the optimality condition, minimizing topological charge density fluctuations, for a general Grassmannian sigma model $\mathrm{Gr}(M,N)$ on a sphere and a torus, together with counting arguments which show that for any filling factor and number of components there is a critical value of topological charge $d_c$ above which there are no optimal textures. Below $d_c$ a solution of the optimality condition on a torus is unique, while in the case of a sphere one has, in general, a continuum of solutions corresponding to new {\it non-Goldstone} zero modes, whose degeneracy is not lifted (via a order from disorder mechanism) by any fermion interactions depending only on the distance on a sphere. We supplement our general theoretical considerations with the exact analytical results for the case of $\mathrm{Gr}(2,4)$, appropriate for recent experiments in graphene., 15 pages, 2 figures

Topological insulators are materials where current does not flow through the bulk, but along the boundaries, only. They are of particular practical importance, since it is considerably more difficult, by ``conventional'' means, to affect their transport properties, than for the case of conventional materials. They are, thus, particularly robust to perturbations. One way to accomplish such changes is by engineering defects. The defects that have been the most studied are domain walls; however flux compactifications can, also, work. We recall the domain wall construction and compare it to the construction from flux compactification. A particular way of engineering the presence of such defects is by introducing anisotropic couplings for the gauge fields. In this case a new phase appears, where matter is confined along layers and local degrees of freedom cannot propagate through the bulk. It is, also, possible to take into account the ``backreaction'' of the dynamics of the gauge fields on the defects and find that a new phase, the layered phase, where, while transport of local degrees of freedom is confined to surfaces, the topological properties can propagate through the bulk, constituting an example of anomaly flow. In this habilitation thesis I summarize about 9-10 years of research that I either personally carried out or directed, or to which I actively took part through joint projects with direct colleagues. My topics of research deal with the electronic properties of quantum materials and their nanostructures. This includes mostly superconducting and correlated systems. Through this period of time, I was also interested in several aspects of mesoscopic physics. Using scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and spectroscopy (STS), we access both the topography of the surface of the material under study and its local electronic energy-resolved properties, at the atomic scale. We thus obtain a real mapping of the local electronic density-of-states (LDOS) of a material for energies close to the Fermi energy, and we observe its evolution as a function of composition, nanostructuring, temperature, or applied magnetic field. In some cases we can also carry out electronic transport measurements in-situ. State-of-the-art experiments are carried out under increasingly extreme conditions combining: ultrahigh vacuum (UHV, 10-11 mbar), very low temperature (down to 300 mK) and strong magnetic field (up to 10 Tesla). These stringent conditions are actually mandatory to study quantum physics using surface sensitive tools, since the LDOS of metallic/superconducting materials is highly dependent of the amount and nature of the impurities present in the material. Our samples are grown in-situ under UHV in a preparation chamber coupled to the microscope, or cleaved in this same chamber for bulk materials. A very strong point of our team is to develop and build our own experimental devices. This allows us to explore the quantum world in experimental conditions that are only beginning to be accessible to commercial devices.

While there is compelling evidence for the existence of magnetic monopoles in spin ice, the direct observation of a point-like source of magnetic field in these systems remains an open challenge. One promising approach is electron holography, which combines atomic-scale resolution with extreme sensitivity to magnetic vector potentials, through the Aharonov-Bohm effect. Here we explore what holography can teach us about magnetic monopoles in spin ice, through experiments on artificial spin ice, and numerical simulations of pyrochlore spin ice. In the case of artificial spin ice, we show that holograms can be used to measure local magnetic charge. For pyrochlore spin ice, we demonstrate that holographic experiments are capable of resolving both magnetic monopoles and their dynamics, including the emergence of electric fields associated with fluctuations of closed loops of spins. These results establish that the observation of both magnetic monopoles and emergent electric fields in pyrochlore spin ice is a realistic possibility in an electron microscope with sufficiently--high phase resolution., Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures in main paper. 11 pages, 11 figures in supplemental V2: Updated citations and further details in supplemental

A quantum spin liquid (QSL) is a fascinating novel state of matter, with no on-site magnetization, no long-range order and which holds fractionalized excitations. In 1987, P. W. Anderson suggested that a QSL state may be the parent-state of the high-Tc superconductivity in cuprates. The Heisenberg hamiltonian for S=1/2 spins with antiferromagnetic nearest-neighbours interaction on the kagome lattice (HAFK) is one of the most promising candidate for realizing such an exotic state. However, there is still no theoretical consensus on the precise nature of its ground state. The mineral herbertsmithite ZnCu₃(OH)₆Cl₂ is the first accurate realization of the HAFK model. Although there is no magnetic transition down to the lowest temperature, the magnetic response of defects (residual interplane coppers) dominates the macroscopic thermodynamical measurements and hampers the measurement of the kagome plane magnetism. Accurate ¹⁷O NMR measurements demonstrated the absence of a gap in the excitations but the nature of the ground state is still under debate. In this thesis, we study new spin liquid candidates derived from the two minerals barlowite Cu₄(OH)₆FBr and claringbullite Cu₄(OH)₆FCl. These compounds contain kagome layers very similar to the ones in herbertsmithite with strong antiferromagnetic interaction between in-plane coppers ions (Jkago~-150 K). The main difference lies in the interplane atomic layer: a strong ferromagnetic interaction Jint binds the kagome coppers and interplane coppers (Jint/Jkago~-0.5). The resulting 3D coupling drives a magnetic transition into a Néel order at T~Jkago/10. It is however possible to selectively susbtitute those interplane coppers with non magnetic zinc, thus separating magnetically the kagome layers. The resulting ZnₓCu₄₋ₓ(OH)₆FBr and ZnₓCu₄₋ₓ(OH)₆FCl compounds are closely related to herbertsmithite. Above a zinc concentration x ≥ 0.6, the magnetic transition disappears and the magnetism stays dynamic even at very low temperature as proven by a µSR study. A direct comparison of the magnetic properties with herbertsmithite is then fully relevant. Triggered by a former fluorine NMR study concluding in favor of a gapped QSL in Zn-barlowite, we demonstrate by a similar study, but comparing Znₓ-barlowite compounds with various substitution rates, that fluorine is sensitive to the magnetism of all the coppers with opposite hyperfine coupling signs depending on the probed copper site. For x=0.66, we separate three temperature regimes in the NMR line shift. The interplane coppers are found to dominate the shift at low temperature. On this basis, we manage to extract the kagome susceptibility on a Zn₀.₇₅-barlowite sample using the spectra of three different Znx-barlowite compounds. Although the error bars on the local susceptibility are large, we highlight the presence of a maximum around T~Jkago/3 which was also reported in herbertsmithite. We associate the distribution of fluorine time relaxation with the distribution of NMR environments due to the presence of residual interplane coppers. In a second part of this thesis, we present the first ¹⁷O NMR study on a Zn₀.₅₉-barlowite sample. We also highlight a maximum of the kagome susceptibility around T~Jkago/3. At low temperature, it becomes difficult to extract the kagome susceptibility because of the important contribution of interplane coppers in the spectrum. The dynamical susceptibility measurements demonstrate the absence of a temperature-activated behavior which settle a upper boundary to the gap, if any, at 1.3K for an applied magnetic field of B=7.55T. Finally, we report the first NMR study of a Zn₀.₇₇-claringbullite sample. We show that it is possible to orient the powder sample under field with a very good orientation quality. Our chlorine NMR study on oriented powder shows that this nucleus is mainly coupled to interplane coppers. Our results open the path for future more accurate ¹⁷O NMR study on these compounds., Un liquide de spin quantique (QSL) est un nouvel état fascinant de la matière, sans aimantation sur site, sans ordre à longue distance et portant des excitations fractionnaires. P. W. Anderson proposa en 1987 que l’état QSL soit l’état précurseur de la supraconductivité dans les cuprates. Aujourd’hui, le hamiltonien de Heisenberg pour des spins S=1/2 en interactions antiferromagnétiques premiers voisins sur réseau kagome (modèle HAFK) est un candidat sérieux à la réalisation d’un tel état. Pourtant, il n’y a pas de consensus théorique sur la nature précise de son état fondamental. L’herbertsmithite ZnCu₃(OH)₆Cl₂ est la première réalisation fidèle du modèle HAFK. Ce matériau ne présente pas d’ordre magnétique à basse température et des mesures par RMN de l’¹⁷O démontrent l’absence de gap dans le spectre d’excitations mais la nature du fondamental reste débattue. Nous étudions dans cette thèse de nouveaux candidats liquides de spins dérivés de la barlowite Cu₄(OH)₆FBr et la claringbullite Cu₄(OH)₆FCl. Ces composés présentent des couches kagome très similaires à l’herbertsmithite mais des différences notables dans l’arrangement atomique interplan : les cuivres du plan kagome sont également en interaction ferromagnétique avec des cuivres interplans. Ce couplage 3D conduit à une transition vers un état de Néel à TN~Jkago/10. Il est cependant possible de substituer sélectivement les cuivres interplans par du zinc non magnétique séparant ainsi magnétiquement les plans kagome et formant les composés ZnₓCu₄₋ₓ(OH)₆FBr et ZnₓCu₄₋ₓ(OH)₆FCl. À partir d’une concentration x ≥ 0.6 de zinc, la transition magnétique disparaît et le magnétisme des composés formés reste dynamique même à très basse température comme le montrent les mesures par µSR. Une comparaison directe de leurs propriétés magnétiques avec l’herbertsmithite est donc pertinente. Motivés par une étude RMN du fluor antérieure concluant à la nature gappée du QSL dans la Zn-barlowite, nous montrons par une étude similaire, mais en comparant entre eux des échantillons de Znₓ-barlowite avec différents taux de substitution, que le fluor est en réalité sensible au magnétisme de tous les cuivres avec des couplages hyperfins de signes opposés suivant le type de cuivre sondé. Pour x=0.66, nous séparons trois régimes de température associés au déplacement de la raie RMN, ce déplacement étant dominé par les cuivres hors plan à basse température. Grâce à ces résultats, nous développons une analyse conjointe des spectres de trois échantillons de Znₓ-barlowite pour isoler la susceptibilité kagome sur un échantillon de Zn₀.₇₅-barlowite. Bien que les barres d’erreurs sur la susceptibilité locale obtenue soient importantes, nous mettons en évidence la présence d’un maximum vers T~Jkago/3 également observé dans l’herbertsmithite. Nous interprétons la distribution de temps de relaxation du fluor par la présence d’une distribution d’environnements du fluor liée à la présence des cuivres interplans résiduels. Dans un second temps, nous présentons la première étude par RMN de l’¹⁷O réalisée sur une Zn₀.₅₉-barlowite. Nous mettons également en évidence un maximum de la susceptibilité kagome vers T~Jkago/3. La contribution importante des cuivres interplans dans le spectre rend cependant difficile l’étude de la susceptibilité kagome à basse température. Les mesures de la susceptibilité dynamique démontrent l’absence d’un comportement activé en température plaçant ainsi une borne supérieure au gap sous champ, s’il existe, à 1.3K pour un champ magnétique appliqué de B=7.55T. Enfin, nous présentons une étude d’un échantillon de Zn₀.₇₇-claringbullite. Nous montrons qu’il est possible d’orienter la poudre de Zn-claringbullite sous champ avec une très bonne qualité d’orientation. Nos mesures par RMN du chlore sur poudre orientée montrent que ce noyau est principalement couplé aux cuivres interplans. Nos résultats ouvrent la voie à des études RMN de l’¹⁷O plus fines sur poudre orientée dans ces composés.

International audience; We discuss the properties of the non-Hermitian PT-symmetric twoscalar fields model. We investigate stability areas of this system and properties of vortices that emerge in the system of two interacting scalar fields. The phase diagram of the model contains stable and unstable regions depending on PT-symmetry breaking, which intercross the regions of U(1)-symmetric and U(1)-broken phases in a nontrivial way. At non-zero quartic couplings, the non-Hermitian model possesses classical vortex solutions in the PT-symmetric regions. We also consider a close Hermitian analog of the theory and compare the results with the non-Hermitian model.

Transition metal oxides (TMO) are a class of materials characterized by a dense phase diagram which arises from their interlinked degrees of freedom leading to various competing ground states. The main ingredient of this work is a cuprate YBa₂Cu₃O₇₋δ (YBCO) widely studied for its dome-like superconducting phase. Various studies have shown that the properties of cuprates can be altered by applying an electric field or light. We have thus investigated the interplay between the effects of electric field and light on TMOs based heterostructures. We first studied the effects of light on underdoped YBCO thin films. We have observed a persistent increase in its superconducting transition temperature as well as a decrease of its resistivity. A correlation between these changes and the changes in the carrier mobility has been established. Second, we covered the effects of electric field induced resistive switching observed in vertical junctions composed of YBCO and the alloy MoSi.By applying a voltage pulse, we have observed a persistent, fast and reversible switch in resistance. This effect has been attributed to a reversible electrochemical reaction occurring at the interface. Finally, by switching the opaque MoSi with a transparent electrode ITO, we have managed to investigate the interplay between electric field and light on the transport properties of these junctions. We have observed a photovoltaic effect (PVE) under visible light as well as a history-dependent persistent change of the resistive state of the junction. The PVE has been linked to standard photovoltaic effect observed in a pn junctions and the persistent changes to a light-induced electrochemical reaction. As an outlook, we covered the investigation of electric field induced resistive switching in nickelate based heterostructures. A similar effect to the one described previously has been observed. These effects might be exploited for neuromorphic applications as potential memristive devices., Les cuprates sont un exemple d’oxydes de métaux de transition caractérisé par une phase de supraconductivité à haute température critique. Il est possible de modifier leur état fondamental grâce à l’application de stimulus externe. L’objectif de cette thèse est d’étudier les interactions entre les effets de champ et de lumière sur des hétérostructures de cuprates. Premièrement nous avons étudié les effets de photo-dopage sur des films minces d’YBCO sous-dopé. Apres l’illumination par de la lumière nous observons une augmentation persistante de la température critique du film et une diminution de sa résistivité. Ces changements sont corrélés à un changement de la mobilité des porteurs de charge. Nous avons ensuite étudié le phénomène de « resistive switching » qui relate un changement de la résistance d’une jonction composée d’YBCO et d’un métal MoSi après l’application d’un champ électrique. Cet effet est expliqué grâce à une réaction d'oxydoréduction qui a lieu à l’interface entre les deux électrodes. Enfin, nous décrivons l’interaction entre les effets d’un champ électrique et les effets de lumière sur des jonctions composées de YBCO et d’un métal transparent, l’ITO. Sous l’action d’un champ électrique nous notons un effet de « resistive switching ». De plus, et après illumination, nous avons mesuré un effet photovoltaïque et un changement persistant de la résistance de la jonction, qui dépend de son historique. Le photo-voltage observé est dû à un effet photovoltaïque observé dans des jonctions pn. En revanche, les effets persistants sont interprétés grâce à une réaction d'oxydoréduction causée par lumière. Nous concluons cette thèse par des travaux de « resistive switching » sur des jonctions comprenant des nickélates qui sont similaires à celles des jonctions à base de cuprate. Ceci est particulièrement intéressant pour des applications en tant que memristors dans le domaine du neuromorphisme.

International audience; The physicochemical properties of uranium are being studied in many application fields, far beyond that of its original use as nuclear fuel. Owing to its complex electronic structure, with valence band electronic states associated with 5f and 6d orbital occupancy, uranium-containing compounds can be synthesized with either charge-insulating, semi-conducting, or even superconducting electronic properties [1]. Similarly, uranium shows exciting coordination chemistry based on a wide range of possible oxidation states, leading to the development of novel catalysts [2]. The binary U−O solid-state system has remained of particular interest, but despite almost a decade of ongoing research it continues to challenge us.It is quite well known that uranium(IV)oxide (UO2) is susceptible to oxidation under varying conditions. A wide non-stoichiometric solid solution phase-field (UO2±x) develops at temperatures above 700 K. In the low-temperature region, structural phase transformations occur, leading to the formation of mixed-valence compounds, commonly referred to as U4O9, U3O7, and U3O8. The oxides UO2±x, U4O9, and U3O7 are structurally closely related to a fluorite-type lattice, but the incorporation of excess anions results in local perturbations that eventually develop a long-range periodical order. The transformation to U3O8 induces a more drastic crystallographic reorganization associated with a considerable volume increase.In the progressive oxidation of the U−O system at ambient pressures, U3O7 is the last member with a fluorite-related structure, which makes it a tipping point. An understanding of the U3O8 oxidation reconstruction mechanism can be gained with the accurate characterization of the U3O7 phase. In pursuit of this goal, we recently performed a series of neutron scattering experiments and combined the analysis with electronic structure calculations [3]. The U3O7 phase showed a more pronounced charge-transfer insulating flavor compared to the usual Mott insulator picture of UO2. In accordance with recent X-ray absorption spectroscopy results [4], the structure refined from the present data contains atomic arrangements associated mainly with tetra- and pentavalent uranium states. However, one peculiarly compact uranium environment carries a hexavalent uranium state as indicated by Hirshfeld and bond-valence sum analysis of the charge densities. The localization of these atoms might have significant implications for the physicochemical properties of this uranium oxide compound. In a disordered or random solid, the wave functions of electronic states can depart from the extended Bloch states and on the contrary be instead exponentially localized in space. This dramatic change of the spatial structure of the wave functions has a strong influence on the transport properties of the system, and for instance, can be responsible for the metal/insulator transition in disordered alloys. In the recent years, a new theoretical tool called the emph{localization landscape} has emerged to study this disorder-induced localization. In this thesis, we use the localization landscape theory to study various aspects of wave localization. First, we show how to extract efficiently the spatial structure of wave localization in any dimension by adapting the so-called emph{watershed} algorithm. Turning to the spectral properties, we compute the distribution of eigenvalues (the integrated density of states) in tight-binding Anderson models using new approximations derived from the localization landscape. We then investigate how the localization landscape can shed a new light on the existence of a dimension-dependent mobility edge at higher energy. Finally, we take a case study of a deterministic potential mimicking disorder, the Aubry-André model, and explore which information on the system can be deduced from the localization landscape formalism., Dans un solide désordonné ou aléatoire, les fonctions d'onde des états électroniques peuvent s'écarter des états de Bloch étendus et au contraire, être localisées de manière exponentielle dans l'espace. Ce changement radical de la structure spatiale des fonctions d'onde a une forte influence sur les propriétés de transport du système et peut, par exemple, être responsable de la transition métal/isolant dans les alliages désordonnés. Dans les années récentes, un nouvel outil théorique appelé le emph {paysage de localisation} a émergé pour l'étude de cette localisation induite par le désordre. Dans cette thèse, nous utilisons la théorie du paysage de localisation afin d'étudier divers aspects de la localisation des ondes. Tout d'abord, nous montrons comment extraire efficacement la structure spatiale de localisation à n'importe quelle dimension en adaptant l'algorithme dit de emph{watershed}. Puis nous passons à l'analyse des propriétés spectrales et calculons la distribution des valeurs propres (la densité intégrée des états) dans des modèles d'Anderson en emph{tight-binding} en utilisant de nouvelles approximations dérivées du paysage de localisation. Nous étudions ensuite comment le paysage de localisation permet de comprendre l'existence d'un seuil de mobilité à plus haute énergie, en fonction de la dimension. Enfin, nous nous intéressons à un potentiel déterministe de désordre, le modèle d'Aubry-André, et explorons quelles informations sur le système peuvent être déduites du formalisme de localisation du paysage.

Many materials show strong electronic correlations where superconductivity competes with insulating states such as cuprates, pnictides or heavy fermions as well as the low dimensional molecular compounds that are the subject of this thesis. In these compounds, the transition from one fundamental state to another is carried out by modification of the chemical pressure or by the application of hydrostatic pressure. This thesis focuses more specifically on the study of the superconducting phase in two-dimensional molecular materials (κ-(BEDT-TTF)₂X family) where the deep understanding of the physics underlying superconductivity is still poorly understood. It comprises two parts. Firstly, tunnel spectroscopy measurements allow us to follow and try to understand the evolution of the symmetry of the superconducting order parameter as a function of chemical pressure. These measurements of the differential electrical conductivity are obtained by performing normal-superconducting junctions on samples placed under a strong magnetic field (up to 14 T) and at low temperature (down to 100 mK). Secondly, measurements of in-plane and out-of-plane resistivity as a function of temperature at different magnetic fields are presented for different hydrostatic pressures between 0 and 1GPa. The abnormally linear behavior of resistivity with temperature under magnetic fields (strong enough to destroy superconductivity) is discussed and compared to other materials with strong electronic correlations., De nombreux matériaux présentent de fortes corrélations électroniques où la supraconductivité est en compétition avec des états isolants tels que les cuprates, les pnictures, les fermions lourds ainsi que les composés moléculaires de basse dimension qui font l’objet de cette thèse. Dans ces composés, le passage d’un état fondamental à un autre s’effectue par modification de la pression chimique ou par l’application d’une pression hydrostatique. Cette thèse porte plus spécifiquement sur l’étude de la phase supraconductrice dans les matériaux moléculaires bidimensionnels (famille κ-(BEDT-TTF)₂X) où la compréhension profonde de la physique sous-jacente à la supraconductivité reste encore mal comprise. Elle comprend deux volets. Premièrement, des mesures de spectroscopie tunnel nous permettent de suivre et d’essayer de comprendre l'évolution de la symétrie du paramètre d'ordre supraconducteur en fonction de la pression chimique. Ces mesures de la conductivité électrique différentielle sont obtenues en réalisant des jonctions normal-supraconducteur sur des échantillons placés sous fort champ magnétique (jusqu’à 14 T) et à basse température (jusqu’à 100 mK). Deuxièmement, des mesures de la résistivité dans les plans conducteurs et hors plan en fonction de la température à différents champs magnétiques sont présentées pour différentes pressions hydrostatiques entre 0 et 1GPa. Le comportement anormalement linéaire de la résistivité avec la température sous champ magnétique (suffisamment fort pour détruire la supraconductivité) est discuté et comparé à d’autres matériaux à fortes corrélations électroniques.

The Dirac equation and its variants are ubiquitous in the low-energy description of topological materials ranging from topological insulators to semimetals as well as their topologically protected surface states. Their spectroscopic properties can be studied theoretically with the help of the corresponding Dirac Hamiltonian. On the one hand, thanks to the underlying Lorentz symmetry of the Dirac Hamiltonians, the relativistic renormalization manifests itself as the renormalization of the band gap resulting in a clear-cut experimental signature in magneto-optics. Most saliently, the renormalization of the band gap is experimentally observed in the magneto-optical measurements of the nodal-line Dirac semimetal niobium diarsenide by our collaborators in LNCMI, Grenoble. Not only are several typical Dirac-type Hamiltonians systematically discussed in order to unveil their relativistic properties, but their interpretation in the language of condensed matter physics is also provided. On the other hand, the magneto-optical signature of additional massive surface states of topological materials is also predicted using linear response theory and the corresponding Dirac Hamiltonians. These massive states called Volkov-Pankratov states arise generically on a smooth surface of topological materials. Their emergence can be equivalently seen as a consequence of a pseudo-magnetic field and/or of a quantum confinement effect. While ARPES cannot unambiguously substantiate the presence of Volkov-Pankratov states, their magneto-optical signature offers a smoking gun thanks to unusual selection rules. Furthermore, the presence of the additional Volkov-Pankratov states gives birth to non-reciprocal surface plasmon modes which provide possibilities in surface plasmonics of topological materials., L'équation de Dirac et ses variantes sont omniprésentes dans la description à basse énergie des matériaux topologiques incluant les isolants topologiques et les semi-métaux topologiques mais aussi leurs états de surface protégés. Leurs propriétés spectroscopiques pourraient être étudiées théoriquement en se basant sur le Hamiltonien de Dirac correspondant. D'une part, grâce à la symétrie de Lorentz sous-jacente des Hamiltonians de Dirac, la renormalisation relativiste se manifeste sous la forme de la renormalisation de gap qui offre une signature expérimentale claire et directe dans la spectroscopie magnéto-optique. En particulier, la renormalisation de gap est observée expérimentalement dans les mesures magnéto-optiques du semi-métal de lignes nodales de Dirac, diarséniure de niobium, par nos collaborateurs du LNCMI à Grenoble. Non seulement plusieurs Hamiltonians de Dirac sont systématiquement discutés afin de dévoiler leurs propriétés relativistes, mais aussi leurs interprétations dans le langage de la physique des solides. D'autre part, la théorie de la réponse linéaire appliquée au Hamiltonien de Dirac correspondant prédit une signature magnéto-optique des états de surface massifs au-delà des états de surface chiraux et topologiquement protégés. Ces états de surface massifs, qui sont aussi appelés états de Volkov-Pankratov, émergent génériquement aux surfaces douces des matériaux topologiques. L'origine de leur apparition peut être considérée de façon équivalente comme une conséquence soit d'un pseudo-champs magnétique soit d'un effet du confinement quantique. En comparant APRES qui ne peut pas établir sans ambiguïté la présence des états de Volkov-Pankratov, leurs signatures magnéto-optiques associées offrent des preuves claires pour leur présence grâce aux règles de sélection exceptionnelles. En plus, la présence des états de Volkov-Pankratov donne lieu aux plasmons de surface non-réciproques qui fournissent les possibilités dans la plasmonique de surface des matériaux topologiques.

The kagome Heisenberg antiferromagnet decorated with quantum spins is a fascinating model where to look for exotic quantum states including the elusive spin liquids. Despite its apparent simplicity, there is still no consensus on the exact nature of the ground state and of the excitation spectrum. The current availability of quantum kagome materials, each with their own deviation to the pure Heisenberg model, allows to confront a fair amount of experimental results to theoretical predictions and study the effect of perturbations inherent to real materials. The experimental work presented in this manuscript examines two directions.First, we focus on the emblematic herbertsmithite ZnCu₃(OH)₆Cl₂, with perfect kagome planes. It is the closest materialization of the pure Heisenberg model so far (J~180 K) and exhibits attributes of a quantum spin liquid at low temperatures, with the absence of magnetic long-range order and the persistence of spin dynamics. As main perturbations, we can mention magnetic impurities between the kagome planes and a finite out-of-plane Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya component (Dz~0.06J). With a comprehensive ¹⁷O NMR study on a high-quality single crystal, we were able to measure the intrinsic (kagome) low-temperature static spin susceptibility and spin dynamics, and we show unambiguously that the excitation spectrum is gapless, at variance with valence bond crystal states and numerous spin liquid candidates that are characterized by gapped excitations. Moreover, the disclosed static spin susceptibility restores some convergence with a fermionic Dirac cone model now advocated for in most numerical works. To shed another light on the low energy density of states, we measured the specific heat on high-quality single crystals. The kagome intrinsic specific heat is obtained in high magnetic fields only: at low magnetic fields, another dominant contribution prevents any conclusive analysis. Remarkably, the kagome specific heat is found to be almost field-independent up to 34 T. This seems to be at odds with a fermionic nature for the excitations, which in such a case would form field-induced Fermi pockets. Yet, as expected for Dirac particles, the density of states appears to vanish in the zero-temperature limit. Although the exact nature of the excitations remains unclear, our results severely constrain future theoretical developments. Further, thanks to NMR and specific heat, we were also able to identify field-induced transitions or crossovers at very low temperatures, and we present a tentative phase diagram. We also used µSR to investigate the robustness of the spin liquid state, which extends at least up to 28 kbar. Second, we introduce two new closely related materials, that implement interesting variants of herbertsmithite: the insulating yttrium kapellasites YCu₃(OH)₆OxCl₃-x, with compositions x=0 and x=1/3. These two compounds are fortuitous outcomes of the ongoing – and still unsuccessful – effort for doping herbertsmithite, by replacing the divalent zinc cations by monovalent or trivalent cations. In yttrium kapellasites, copper ions also build a kagome lattice with antiferromagnetic in-plane couplings, and the structure forbids interlayer impurities. The ground state properties are determined using bulk thermodynamics and µSR on powdered samples. The x=0 compound has a perfect kagome geometry but displays an ordered ground state, which is attributed to a large Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya anisotropy. The x=1/3 compound has a slightly distorted kagome geometry displaying anisotropic interactions, but exhibits features of spin liquid physics. Yet, we show with a comparative ³⁵Cl NMR study, that single crystal samples of the latter material actually develop static magnetism at variance with the polycrystalline samples. We conclude that Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya anisotropy and/or the modified kagome magnetic lattice in the x=1/3 compound are likely at the origin of the low-temperature magnetic transition., Le modèle d’Heisenberg antiferromagnétique pour des spins 1/2 sur le réseau kagome joue un rôle clé dans la recherche d’états quantiques exotiques, dont les liquides de spins qui, par dopage, pourraient engendrer de la supraconductivité. Malgré son apparente simplicité, la nature de l'état fondamental et du spectre d'excitations reste très débattue. Grâce à un nombre croissant de matériaux kagome, chacun ayant ses propres déviations par rapport au modèle d’Heisenberg, il devient possible de confronter expérience et théorie et d'étudier l'effet des perturbations inhérentes aux différents matériaux. Le travail expérimental décrit dans ce manuscrit présente deux volets. L’herbertsmithite ZnCu₃(OH)₆Cl₂, dont le réseau magnétique est formé par des plans kagome géométriquement parfaits représente la meilleure matérialisation du modèle d’Heisenberg à ce jour (J~180 K). Comme attendu pour un liquide de spin, il ne présente pas d’ordre magnétique à basse température mais une dynamique de spin persistante. La présence d’impuretés magnétiques inter-plans et l’interaction de Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (Dz~0.06J) sont les perturbations dominantes. Grâce à une étude locale par RMN de l'¹⁷O sur un monocristal, nous avons pu mesurer les susceptibilités statique et dynamique des plans kagome à basse température, et nous prouvons que le spectre d'excitations est sans gap. L’état fondamental stabilisé est donc distinct des états de type VBC et de nombreux états liquides de spins avec gap. L’analyse de la susceptibilité statique est compatible avec un modèle fermionique de cônes de Dirac, désormais proposé dans la plupart des travaux numériques. La chaleur spécifique intrinsèque aux plans kagome ne peut être mesurée que sous des champs magnétiques intenses. Elle complète nos informations sur la densité d’états à basse énergie et la nature des excitations. Sa quasi-indépendance en champ jusqu'à 34 T semble en contradiction avec la nature fermionique des excitations, qui devraient former des poches de Fermi sous champ. Pourtant, comme prévu pour des particules de Dirac, la densité d’états semble s’annuler à température nulle. Bien que la nature exacte des excitations reste donc incertaine, nos résultats limitent fortement les développements théoriques futurs. En outre, grâce à la RMN et à la chaleur spécifique, nous avons également pu identifier des transitions induites par le champ à très basse température, et nous ébauchons un premier diagramme de phases. Nous avons également utilisé la µSR pour sonder la robustesse de l'état liquide de spins, qui persiste au moins jusqu'à 28 kbar. Nous présentons ensuite les systèmes isolants yttrium-kapellasites YCu₃(OH)₆OxCl₃-x, avec x=0 et x=1/3, deux variantes de l’herbertsmithite, issus de tentatives infructueuses de dopage de l'herbertsmithite par substitution des cations de zinc divalents par des cations monovalents ou trivalents. Dans ces composés aussi à base de cuivre, la structure exclut la présence d’impuretés magnétiques inter-plans. Les propriétés de l'état fondamental sont déterminées à l'aide de mesures thermodynamiques macroscopiques et de µSR sur des échantillons polycristallins. Le composé x=0 présente un réseau kagome géométriquement parfait mais son état fondamental est ordonné à longue portée, attribué à une forte interaction de Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya. Le réseau kagome légèrement distordu du composé x=1/3 est à l’origine d’échanges anisotropes, mais son état fondamental présente toutes les caractéristiques d’un liquide de spins. Toutefois, nous montrons au moyen d’une étude comparative de RMN du ³⁵Cl sur des échantillons du composé x=1/3, que les monocristaux développent un magnétisme statique, à l’inverse des échantillons polycristallins. Pour le composé x=1/3, nous concluons que l'interaction de Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya et/ou le réseau magnétique distordu sont certainement à l'origine de la transition magnétique à basse température.

What do stars in a galaxy, drops in a river, and electrons in a superconducting cuprate levitating above a magnet all have in common? All of these systems cannot be described by the isolated motion of one of their parts. These singular properties emerge from particles and their interactions as a whole: we talk about the emph{many-body problem}.In this Thesis, we focus on properties of strongly-correlated systems, that obey quantum mechanics. Analytical methods being rapidly limited in their understanding of these materials, we develop novel numerical techniques to precisely quantify their properties when interactions between particles become strong.First, we focus on the equilibrium properties of the layered perovskite Sr2IrO4, a compound isostructural to the superconducting cuprate La2CuO4,where we prove the existence of a pseudogap and describe the electronic structure of this material upon doping.Then, in order to address the thermodynamic limit of lattice problems, we develop extensions of determinant Monte Carlo algorithms to compute dynamical quantities such as the self-energy. We show how a factorial number of diagrams can be regrouped in a sum of determinants, hence drastically reducing the fermionic sign problem.In the second part, we turn to the description of nonequilibrium phenomena in correlated systems.We start by revisiting the real-time diagrammatic Monte Carlo recent advances in a new basis where all vacuum diagrams directly vanish.In an importance sampling procedure,such an algorithm can directly addressthe long-time limit needed in the study of steady states in out-of-equilibrium systems.Finally, we study the insulator-to-metal transition induced by an electric field in Ca2RuO4, which coexists with a structural transition.An algorithm based on the non-crossing approximation allows us to compute the current as a function of crystal-field splitting in this material and to compare our results to experimental data., Quel est le point commun entre les étoiles formant une galaxie, les gouttes d'eau s'écoulant dans une rivière, et les électrons d'une céramique superconductrice lévitant au-dessus d'un aimant ? Tous ces systèmes ne peuvent être décrits par le mouvement isolé d'une seule de leurs composantes. C'est l'ensemble des particules et de leurs interactions qui fait émerger leurs singulières propriétés : on parle du problème à N corps.Dans cette Thèse, nous nous intéressons aux propriétés des systèmes d'électrons fortement corrélés, dont la physique est gouvernée par les principes de la mécanique quantique. Les méthodes analytiques étant rapidement limitées, nous développons de nouvelles approches numériques afin de quantifier précisément les propriétés de matériaux dans lesquels les interactions entre particules deviennent importantes.Nous nous intéressons tout d'abord aux propriétés d'équilibre de la pérovskite Sr2IrO4, un matériau structurellementéquivalent au cuprate supraconducteur La2CuO4. Nous mettons en évidence l'existence d'un pseudogapet décrivons la structure électronique de ce matériau en fonction du dopage.Nous développons ensuite des extensions aux algorithmes de Monte Carlo déterminantaux pour l'étude de quantités dynamiquescomme l'énergie propre, et nous montrons qu'il est possible de regrouper un nombre factoriel de diagrammes en une somme de déterminants, réduisantainsi fortement le problème de signe fermionique.Dans un deuxième temps, nous décrivons les systèmes fortement corrélés hors d'équilibre.Nous commençons par revisiter le Monte Carlo diagrammatique en temps réel dans une nouvelle base qui permet aux diagrammes du vide de s'annulerdirectement. Au cours d'un échantillonnage statistique, ceci permetd'atteindre la limite de long temps nécessaire à l'étude des états stationnaires des systèmes hors d'équilibre.Pour terminer, nous étudions la transition métal-isolant induite par un champ électrique de Ca2RuO4, qui coexiste avec une transition structurelle.Un algorithme basé sur l'approximation sans croisement nous permettent de calculer le courant en fonction du champ crystallin dans ce matériauet de comparer nos résultats aux données expérimentales.

International audience; We investigate the electromagnetic wave propagation in a triangular metallic photonic graphene structure and show that, associated to trigonally warped Dirac cones, the transport properties resulting from an incident beam at the armchair edge display drastically different behaviors as compared to the results obtained for other analogous systems. Namely, associated to the lower Dirac cone, the incident beam is collimated to one center beam; while, associated to the upper cone, it is split into two beams with a 2π/3 angle. The other expected beams are all strongly inhibited. This can be related to the metallic nature of the structure, where a propagating electromagnetic wave should follow the structure locals patterns that govern its field distribution, whose symmetry properties determine its excitation by an incident wave. This study highlights the singularity of a metallic photonic graphene in its interaction with the electromagnetic waves, and may find applications in valley photonics for high efficiency collimating and large angle beam splitting system designs.

International audience; Recently, there has been an increased focus on understanding the structural details of disordered materials which are found across all energy technologies [Shamblin et al., Nat. Mater. 2016]. Despite the importance of these materials, there is still little knowledge about the atomic-scale rules governing disordering processes. Here, we present results from neutron total scattering experiments from spinel (AB2O4) and pyrochlore (A2B2O7) model systems which reveal that short-range ordering and associated structural relaxations in disordered materials can be understood as an extension of Pauling’s rules [Pauling, J. Am. Chem. Soc. 1929]. These rules apply whether disorder is induced intrinsically (e.g., chemical substitution), extrinsically (high temperature), or even by highly non-equilibrium conditions (high-energy ion irradiation and mechanical milling). These results provide a framework that can be utilized to predict the atomic configuration in disordered materials, including those that result from exposure to extreme conditions. My PhD was devoted to the study of driven-dissipative quantum many-body systems. These systems represent natural platforms to explore fundamental questions about matter under non-equilibrium conditions, having at the same time a potential impact on emerging quantum technologies. In this thesis, we discuss a spectral decomposition of single-particle Green functions of Markovian open systems, that we applied to a model of a quantum van der Pol oscillator. We point out that a sign property of spectral functions of equilibrium systems doesn't hold in the case of open systems, resulting in a surprising ``negative density of states", with direct physical consequences. We study the phase transition between a normal and a superfluid phase in a prototype system of driven-dissipative bosons on a lattice. This transition is characterized by a finite-frequency criticality corresponding to the spontaneous break of time-translational invariance, which has no analog in equilibrium systems. Later, we discuss the mean-field phase diagram of a Mott insulating phase stabilized by dissipation, which is potentially relevant for ongoing experiments. Our results suggest that there is a trade off between the fidelity of the stationary phase to a Mott insulator and robustness of such a phase at finite hopping. Finally, we present some developments towards using dynamical mean field theory (DMFT) for studying driven-dissipative lattice systems. We introduce DMFT in the context of driven-dissipative models and developed a method to solve the auxiliary problem of a single impurity, coupled simultaneously to a Markovian and a non-Markovian environment. As a test, we applied this novel method to a simple model of a fermionic, single-mode impurity., Ma thèse de doctorat était consacrée à l'étude des systèmes quantiques à plusieurs corps dissipatifs et pilotés. Ces systèmes représentent des plateformes naturelles pour explorer des questions fondamentales sur la matière dans des conditions de non-équilibre, tout en ayant un impact potentiel sur les technologies quantiques émergentes. Dans cette thèse, nous discutons d'une décomposition spectrale de fonctions de Green de systèmes ouverts markoviens, que nous appliquons à un modèle d'oscillateur quantique de van der Pol. Nous soulignons qu’une propriété de signe des fonctions spectrales des systèmes d’équilibre ne s’imposait pas dans le cas de systèmes ouverts, ce qui produisait une surprenante "densité d’états négative", avec des conséquences physiques directes. Nous étudions ensuite la transition de phase entre une phase normale et une phase superfluide dans un système prototype de bosons dissipatifs forcés sur un réseau. Cette transition est caractérisée par une criticité à fréquence finie correspondant à la rupture spontanée de l'invariance par translation dans le temps, qui n’a pas d’analogue dans des systèmes à l’équilibre. Nous discutons le diagramme de phase en champ moyen d'une phase isolante de Mott stabilisée par dissipation, potentiellement pertinente pour des expériences en cours. Nos résultats suggèrent qu'il existe un compromis entre la fidélité de la phase stationnaire à un isolant de Mott et la robustesse d'une telle phase à taux de saut fini. Enfin, nous présentons des développements concernant la théorie du champ moyen dynamique (DMFT) pour l’étude des systèmes à plusieurs corps dissipatifs et forcés. Nous introduisons DMFT dans le contexte des modèles dissipatifs et forcés et nous développons une méthode pour résoudre le problème auxiliaire d'une impureté couplée simultanément à un environnement markovien et à un environnement non-markovien. À titre de test, nous appliquons cette nouvelle méthode à un modèle simple d’impureté fermionique.

The aim of this thesis is to study the influence of the pressure on the optical transitions between multi-determinant ground state and excited states of the NV center from the first-principles.In this work, I study both the neutral NV0 and negatively charged NV- centers.Long-range interactions have a crucial effect in such defects: first, elastic deformations have a long range and need to be accounted for; second, when the defect has a charge, it is important to avoid spurious charge-charge interactions between neighboring supercells caused by the use of periodic boundary conditions. Thus, I study the atomic structure of defect with large supercells by the density functional theory (DFT).The NV center is a deep-center defect, its optical and magnetic properties are related with localized levels in the electronic band-gap. These levels are believed to be built out of the localized orbitals of dangling bonds pointing towards the vacancy, providing strongly correlated electronic states. Thus, an accurate quantum mechanical treatment is needed.DFT is a powerful approach for the calculation of the ground state properties of defects. However, the single Slater determinant nature of the DFT wave function lacks the non-dynamical correlations, that characterize such defects, and does not allow for the calculation of many-body levels. Moreover, exchange and correlation (XC) functionals used in DFT add have a limited accuracy.Therefore, in this PhD work, I first develop a combined DFT + Hubbard model technique. I study the triplet-triplet transition both with the PBE XC functional and the HSE06 one. I confirm that the use of the hybrid XC functional HSE06 improves the description of correlations beyond DFT-PBE and allows for more accurate prediction of optical transitions.An exact diagonalization (or in quantum chemistry language full Configuration Interaction calculations) of the Hubbard Hamiltonian in the many-electron basis constructed of in-gap localized levels, allows to get access to multi-determinant ground and excited states. I benchmark this technique comparing it to the recent state of the art methods.Finally, I apply the developed technique in order to study the effect of the hydrostatic pressure on NV- and NV0 centers. Among many results of my work, I discovered a very interesting effect related to the singlet-singlet transition in the NV-center under hydrostatic pressure. The results I have obtained during my PhD have never been calculated nor observed experimentally. In order to validate the theoretical model, I have compared our results with the measurements that have been obtained by our experimental collaborators for the optical transition in the NV- and NV0. Last but not least, the effect of the electron-phonon interaction was discussed.As a perspective, I developed a new code that can be applied to study other defect systems of interest in the quantum technologies., Ce travail de doctorat a pour objet l’étude, dans le diamant, de l'influence de la pression sur les transitions optiques entres l’état fondamental et les états excités du centre « azote-lacune de carbone » NV, sans paramètre ajustable. Le centre neutre NV0 et le centre chargé négativement NV- ont chacun été étudiés. L’étude a nécessité le développement d’un modèle de Hubbard où les valeurs des interactions sont obtenues sans ajustement sur l’expérience, par une méthode de calcul à partir des principes premiers.Le centre NV est un défaut à niveaux profonds, ses propriétés optiques et magnétiques sont liées aux niveaux sans dispersion dans la bande interdite électronique associés à des états électroniques fortement localisés. Ces niveaux proviennent de combinaisons linéaires d’orbitales localisées correspondant aux quatre liaisons pendantes pointant vers le centre de la lacune et issues des corrélations électroniques fortes. C'est pourquoi un traitement rigoureux, à l’échelle quantique, est nécessaire. La DFT est une approche puissante pour les calculs des propriétés de l'état fondamental des défauts ponctuels. Cependant, les états électroniques en DFT ont un caractère mono-déterminantal : un seul déterminant de Slater intervient, auquel il manque les corrélations non dynamiques. La DFT seule ne permet pas de calculer certains états électroniques à N - corps qui caractérisent les défauts profonds. De plus, les fonctionnelles d'échange et corrélation (FXC) utilisées en DFT ont une précision limitée.C'est pourquoi j’ai d’abord développé une approche combinée modèle d'Hubbard + DFT. La transition triplet-triplet entre l’état fondamental et le premier état triplet excité est étudié à la fois avec la FXC standard GGA-PBE, et la FXC hybride HSE06. Il est montré que l'utilisation de cette dernière améliore la description des corrélations au-delà de la DFT-PB, et permet la prédiction des transitions optiques plus précise. De plus, les interactions à longue portée ont un effet crucial dans la modélisation des défauts profonds: premièrement, les déformations élastiques, dues à la présence d’un atome de nature différente (N) de ceux de la matrice (C), sont à longue portée et doivent être prises en compte; ensuite, quand le défaut est chargé, il est important d'éviter l'interaction non-physique charge-charge entre supermailles voisines, causée par l'utilisation des conditions périodiques aux limites. Par conséquent, j’ai étudié la structure atomique d’un défaut dans de grandes supermailles.La diagonalisation exacte soit, en termes de chimie quantique, le calcul d'interaction de configurations, du Hamiltonian de Hubbard dans la base à plusieurs électrons, construite à partir des niveaux localisé dans la bande interdite, permet d’accéder aux états fondamental et excités multi-configurationels. Cette technique a été comparée aux méthodes récentes de l'état de l'art.La méthode développée est appliquée à l’étude de l'effet de la pression hydrostatique sur les niveaux triplets et singulets du centre NV-, et sur les niveaux doublets et quadruplets du centre NV0. Parmi les nombreux résultats, j'ai découvert un effet très intéressant lié à la transition singulet-singulet sous pression hydrostatique dans le centre NV-. Les résultats obtenus dans ce travail n'ont jamais été ni calculé ni mesurés expérimentalement. Pour valider mon modèle théorique, j'ai comparé mes résultats avec des mesures expérimentales disponibles pour les transitions optiques du centre NV- et du centre NV0 obtenus par nos collaborateurs. Enfin, l'effet de couplage électron-phonon a été discuté.En perspective, j'ai développé un nouveau code de calcul qui peut être utilisé pour étudier d'autres défauts d'interêt dans les technologies quantiques.

This manuscript focuses on the electronic heat/charge transport dichotomy and the beyond-quantum-limit transport properties of dilute metals.In the first part, we report on a study of two semi-metals, WP2 and Sb. In both cases, we found that the Wiedemann-Franz (WF) law is recovered at low temperature (T ≈ 2 K), but not at T ≈ 15 K. We show that the finite-temperature deviation from the WF law is due to a mismatch between the prefactors of the T 2-resistivities. In the Boltzmann picture of transport, this difference is associated with abundant small-angle scattering among electrons. However, we argue that momentum-conserving fermionic collisions in normal-state liquid 3He also produce a thermal T2-resistivity. This opens the door for an alternative interpretation : the existence of a hydrodynamic regime of electrons in these semi-metals. In this scenario, the larger T2 thermal resistivity is due to momentum-conserving electronic collisions. In the case of Sb, the ratio of the two T2-prefactors evolves with sample size. This observation supports the hydrodynamic scenario. Finally, we find a large hydrodynamic correction in the phononic thermal conductivity.The second part deals with the fate of the Fermi sea in the quantum limit (QL). In the doped semi-conductor InAs, we observe a field-induced insulating state for all geometries of transport. This field-induced state is accompanied by a ‘giant’ Seebeck effect. The comparison with the succession of field-induced states in graphite up to B = 90 T reveals that the ground state of a 3D electron gas beyond the QL is system-dependent. The observation of a saturating resistivity accompanied by vanishing thermoelectric coefficients in InAs points to the existence of a conductive surface state., Cette thèse traite la dichotomie entre transport électronique de charge et de chaleur ainsi que les propriétés de transport au-delà de la limite quantique dans les métaux dilués.D’abord, nous étudions deux semi-métaux, WP2 et Sb. La loi de Wiedemann-Franz (WF) y est satisfaite à basse température (T≈2K) mais violée à T≈15K. Cette déviation à température finie à la loi de WF résulte de la différence entre les préfacteurs des T2-résistivités. Dans un cadre boltzmannien, cette différence est associée à une abondance de collisions électroniques à petit angle. Cependant, l’exemple de l’3He liquide montre que des collisions fermioniques qui conservent le moment total conduisent à une T2-résistivité thermique. Une interprétation différente est alors possible dans WP2 et Sb : la possible existence d’un régime hydrodynamique des électrons. Pour Sb, le ratio entre les T2-préfacteurs des résistivités thermique et électrique évolue avec la taille du système. Cette découverte appuie le scénario hydrodynamique. Enfin, nous montrons l’existence de corrections hydrodynamiques dans la conductivité thermique due à un autre type de quasiparticules, les phonons.La seconde partie de cette thèse traite du destin de la mer de Fermi au-delà de la limite quantique (QL). Dans le semi-conducteur dopé InAs, nous rapportons l’existence d’un état isolant induit par le champ magnétique selon toutes les géométries de mesure qui est accompagné par un effet Seebeck « géant ». La comparaison avec la succession d’états induits par le champ dans graphite jusqu’à B=90T révèle que l’état fondamental d’un gaz d’électrons 3D au-delà de la QL n’est pas universel et dépend du système. Nos résultats suggèrent l’existence d’un état de surface conducteur dans InAs.

One-dimensional quantum systems have long been seen as simple toy-models but are nowadays often realized in ultracold atoms experiments. In those experiments the confining potential creates a spatial inhomogeneity. This breaks the translation invariance which plays a key role in exact analytical solutions as the Bethe Ansatz. In this thesis, we propose an effective theory generalizing the Luttinger liquid approach for inhomogeneous systems. In this setup, the effective action lives in curved space. However, making the hypothesis of separation of scales allow to compute the action's parameters by using Bethe Ansatz. The problem can then be solved in flat space by using tools from conformal theory. This leads us to solving the inhomogeneous gaussian free field that gives access to all correlation functions of the model under investigation. Here we focus on the Lieb-Liniger model. Our results are tested against DMRG simulations., Si les systèmes quantiques à une dimension ont longtemps été vus comme de simples modèle-jouets, bon nombre sont à présent réalisés dans les expériences d’atomes ultra-froids. Dans ces expériences, le potentiel de confinement du gaz induit nécessairement une inhomogénéité spatiale. Cette inhomogénéité brise l'invariance par translation qui joue un rôle clé dans les solutions analytiques, notamment celle de l'Ansatz de Bethe. On propose dans cette thèse de développer une théorie des champs effective à même de caractériser ces gaz quantiques inhomogènes, en généralisant la théorie du liquide de Luttinger. Dans ces conditions la métrique de l'action effective est courbe. Sous une hypothèse de séparation des échelles, les paramètres de l'action peuvent néanmoins être fixés par les solutions de l'Ansatz de Bethe. Le problème peut alors se ramener au cas d'un espace plat en faisant appel aux théories conformes. On est ainsi amené à résoudre le champ libre gaussien inhomogène, qui donne accès à toutes les fonctions de corrélations du modèle considéré. Dans cette thèse, on s'intéresse plus particulièrement au modèle de Lieb-Liniger. Les résultats obtenus sont comparés au système simulé par DMRG.

Multiferroics are materials in which at least two ferroic orders coexist within a singlephase. Those combining a magnetic and a ferroelectric order are particulary attractivematerials. Indeed, the magnetization and the electrical polarization interracting throughthe magnetoelectric coupling open new possibilities in the technologies of storage and manipulationof the information. From a fundamental point of view, these complex materialsprovide a unique opportunity for the study of the possible links between the magnetic andferroelectric orders. This work is focused on the perovskite family and more particularlyon BiFeO3 and TbMnO3.BiFeO3 has one of the highest polarization of perovskites and an original magneticstructure. Our Raman spectroscopy study on nanoparticles highlights a link between thelattice, the magnetism and the surface at a peculiar size. This size can be related to theperiodicity of the magnetic cycloid which is the only comparable length scale.TbMnO3 presents two types of magneto-electric coupling : a spontaneous one at theorigin of a polarization and a dynamic one giving rise to the electromagnons. At ambientpressure, these two couplings are different but they merge when a hydrostatic pressureis applied. Our Raman spectroscopy study at high pressure reveals different behaviorsbetween the electromagnons. Especially, we have observed a strong increase of one of theelectromagnon activity., Les multiferroïques sont des matériaux dans lesquels coexistent au moins deux ordresferroïques au sein d’une même phase. Ceux combinant un ordre magnétique avec un ferroélectriquesont particulièrement intéressants. En effet, la présence d’une aimantationet d’une polarisation électrique interagissant via le couplage magnéto-électrique ouvre denouvelles possibilités dans les technologies de stockage et de manipulation de l’information.D’un point de vue fondamental, ces matériaux complexes présentent l’opportunitéd’étudier les liens possibles entre les ordres magnétiques et ferroélectriques. Ce travail seconcentre sur la famille des pérovskites et plus particulièrement sur les matériaux multiferroïquesBiFeO3 et TbMnO3.BiFeO3 possède une polarisation parmi les plus élevées des pérovskites et une structuremagnétique originale provenant d’un ensemble complexe d’interactions. Notre étude parspectroscopie Raman sur des nanoparticules met en évidence un jeu de couplage entrele réseau, le magnétisme et la surface à une taille particulière. Cette dernière peut êtrerapprochée de la périodicité de la cycloïde magnétique, unique échelle de longueur comparable.TbMnO3 présente deux types de couplage magnéto-électrique : un spontané qui est àl’origine d’une polarisation et un dynamique dont proviennent les électromagnons. À pressionambiante, ces deux couplages sont distincts mais ils se confondent lors de l’applicationd’une pression hydrostatique. Notre étude de spectroscopie Raman à haute pression a misen évidence des comportements différents entre les électromagnons. Notamment, nousavons observé une forte augmentation de l’activité d’un des électromagnons à haute pression.

Oxide thin films feature a wide range of physical phenomena and rich phase diagrams tunable by strain and interface engineering. CaMnO3, in particular, is extremely sensitive to both doping and strain and, when grown with compressive strain, transitions from an insulating and antiferromagnetic state to a metallic and weakly ferromagnetic state at only 2% Ce doping.We used a combination of angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, magnetotransport, and density functional theory to study the electronic properties of this material. We observed the existence of two separate charge carriers, light electrons and heavy polarons, whose physical nature differs because of drastically different couplings to phonons. We ascribe these differences to a different relative band filling due to correlations, which enhance greatly the coupling to phonons of the heavy polarons band. Magnetotransport experiments reveal that the polaron band dominates transport despite its lower mobility.Compressive strain also gives rise to a strong magnetic anisotropy which stabilizes magnetic bubbles that accompany a topological Hall effect. This suggests that these bubbles have topological character, i.e. are skyrmion bubbles. The topological Hall effect diverges as the manganite approaches the metal-insulator transition at low dopings. We used a recently developed theory in order to interpret this behavior, and we conclude that correlations may come into play, enhancing the effective mass of the carriers, and in turn the topological Hall effect.As this manganite is highly sensitive to changes in doping and carrier density, we grew BiFeO3/(Ca,Ce)MnO3 ferroelectric field-effect transistors. Upon switching the ferroelectric polarization of the BiFeO3 top layer, we could not observe any sizable changes in the properties of the underlying manganite layers. We used transmission electron microscopy to study the properties of these bilayers with an atomic resolution, and we observed that polarization pinning at the BiFeO3/(Ca,Ce)MnO3 impedes a complete switch of the polarization and so reduces the operational capabilities of these devices. Nevertheless, we could detect modifications of the electronic properties of the manganite induced by polarization reversal at the atomic scale., Les couches minces d'oxyde présentent un large éventail de phénomènes physiques et riches diagrammes de phase, ajustables par l'ingénierie des déformations et des interfaces. Le CaMnO3, en particulier, est extrêmement sensible au dopage et aux contraintes d’épitaxie et, lorsqu'il est élaboré sous compression, il passe d'un état isolant et antiferromagnétique à un état métallique et faiblement ferromagnétique à seulement 2% de dopage au Ce.Nous avons utilisé une combinaison de spectroscopie de photoémission résolue en angle, de magnétotransport et de théorie de la fonctionnelle de la densité pour étudier les propriétés électroniques de ce matériau. Nous avons observé l'existence de deux porteurs de charge distincts, les électrons légers et les polarons lourds, dont la nature diffère en raison de leur couplage radicalement différent aux phonons. Nous attribuons ces différences à un remplissage relatif différent de la bande en raison des corrélations, qui améliorent considérablement le couplage aux phonons de la bande des polarons lourds. Les expériences de magnétotransport révèlent que la bande polaire domine le transport malgré sa mobilité réduite.La compression épitaxiale donne également lieu à une forte anisotropie magnétique qui stabilise des bulles magnétiques et s’accompagnent d’un effet Hall topologique. Cela suggère que ces bulles ont un caractère topologique. L'effet Hall topologique diverge lorsque la manganite s'approche de la transition métal-isolant à faible dopage. Nous avons utilisé une théorie récemment développée pour interpréter ce comportement, et nous concluons que des corrélations peuvent entrer en jeu, augmentant la masse effective des porteurs et par conséquent l'effet Hall topologique.Comme cette manganite est très sensible aux changements de densités de porteurs, nous avons développé des transistors à effet de champ ferroélectriques BiFeO3/(Ca,Ce)MnO3. Lors de la commutation de la polarisation ferroélectrique de la couche supérieure de BiFeO3, nous n'avons pu observer de changement notable dans les propriétés des couches de manganite sous-jacentes. Nous avons utilisé la microscopie électronique en transmission pour étudier les propriétés de ces bicouches avec une résolution atomique, et nous avons observé que l'épinglage de polarisation à l’interface BiFeO3/(Ca,Ce)MnO3 empêche une commutation complète de la polarisation et réduit ainsi la capacité opérationnelle de ces dispositifs. Néanmoins, nous avons pu détecter l’influence de la polarisation ferroélectrique sur les propriétés électroniques de la manganite à l’échelle atomique.

International audience; Fission products, including rare earth elements, are incorporated into the fuel matrix through the operational life of the fuel in a nuclear reactor, at the same time the chemistry of uranium evolves to higher oxidation states with burn up. This evolution results in the formation of complex (multicomponent) oxides that are encompassed within the ternary oxide system UO2-UO3-Ln2O3 (where Ln stand for a lanthanide). We investigate the crystallographic and electronic structure of Ln-U-O compounds that may be formed inside nuclear fuel operational life using density functional theory (DFT) calculations. We used a layered atomic model to propose ordered structures and compared their stability to disordered phases. We also employed the atom-in-molecule (AIM) approach to study the oxidation state of uranium atoms and the iconicity/covalency of the U-O bonds. The AIM analyses revealed a quantitative inverse correlation between the charge density at the bonding critical points and the U-O bond length.

The physics of correlated materials offers a wealth of new phenomena, many of which are not yet - or only partially - understood. In this thesis, we focus on multi-orbital models, which we study using various methods, including dynamical mean-field theory. We show that in the multi-orbital Hubbard model close to the Mott transition, Hund's coupling gives rise to a bad metal regime the properties of which we analyze. Furthermore, we consider a more general class of models that include oxygen ligands. More specifically, we study the effect of inter-shell interactions between correlated metal- and ligand p-orbitals. In this context, we develop and test a new slave-rotor approach to treat such interactions in an effective manner. The final chapter constitutes an excursion to the field of molecular spintronics, where we study the physics of the hybridization-induced spin-state switching in organometallic nickel porphyrin molecules., Les matériaux corrélés offrent une richesse de nouveaux phénomènes, dont beaucoup ne sont pas encore - ou seulement partiellement - compris. Au centre de cette thèse sont des modèles multi-orbitalaires que j'etudie à travers une palette de méthodes, dont la théorie du champ moyen dynamique. Dans le modèle de Hubbard multi-orbitalaire proche de la transition de Mott, je mets en évidence un régime de mauvais métal induit par le couplage de Hund. Les propriétés de la transition de Mott dans ce système sont analysées. Dans un deuxèime temps, je traite un modèle élargi pour inclure des degrés de liberté des ligands dans les oxydes. Plus spécifiquement, cette thèse étudie les effets des interactions inter-couches entre orbitales corrélés d'un atome de métal de transition et les orbitales p des ligands. Une partie du travail est dédiée au développement de nouvelles méthodes dont une approche de rotateurs esclaves à ce problème. Le dernier chapitre concerne le domaine de la spintronique moléculaire, où j'étudie la physique du "spin-state switching" en fonction de l'hybridation d'un ion de métal de transition avec ses ligands dans les molecules organométalliques du type porphyrine de nickel.

Motivated by the recent experimental determination of the three-dimensional Fermi surface of overdoped La-based cuprate superconductors [Horio et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 2018, 121, 077004], we revisit the tight-binding parameterization of their conduction band. We construct a minimal tight-binding model entailing eight orbitals, two of them involving apical oxygen ions. Parameter optimization allows to almost perfectly reproduce the three-dimensional conduction band as obtained from density functional theory (DFT). We discuss how each parameter entering this multiband model influences it, and show that the peculiar form of its dispersion severely constraints the parameter values. We then evidence that standard perturbative derivation of an effective one-band model is poorly converging because of the comparatively small value of the charge transfer gap. Yet, this allows us to unravel the microscopical origin of the in-plane and out-of-plane hopping amplitudes. An alternative approach to the computation of the tight-binding parameters of the effective model is presented and worked out. It results that the agreement with DFT is preserved provided longer-ranged hopping amplitudes are retained. A comparison with existing models is also performed. Finally, the Fermi surface, showing staggered pieces alternating in size and shape, is compared to experiment, with the density of states also being calculated., Comment: 25 pages, 16 figures

The fields of in- and out-of-equilibrium quantum many-body systems are major topics in Physics, and in condensed-matter Physics in particular. The equilibrium properties of one-dimensional problems are well studied and understood theoretically for a vast amount of interacting models, from lattice spin chains to quantum fields in a continuum. This progress was allowed by the development of diverse powerful techniques, for instance, Bethe ansatz, renormalization group, bosonization, matrix product states and conformal field theory. Although the equilibrium characteristics of many models are known, this is in general not enough to describe their non-equilibrium behaviors, the latter often remain less explored and much less understood. Quantum impurity models represent some of the simplest many-body problems. But despite their apparent simplicity, they can capture several important experimental phenomena, from the Kondo effect in metals to transport in nanostructures such as point contacts or quantum dots. In this thesis consider a classic impurity model - the interacting resonant level model (IRLM). The model describes spinless fermions in two semi-infinite leads that are coupled to a resonant level -- called quantum dot or impurity -- via weak tunneling and Coulomb repulsion. We are interested in out-of-equilibrium situations where some particle current flows through the dot, and study transport characteristics like the steady current (versus voltage), differential conductance, backscattered current, current noise or the entanglement entropy. We perform extensive state-of-the-art computer simulations of model dynamics with the time-dependent density renormalization group method (tDMRG) which is based on a matrix product state description of the wave functions. We obtain highly accurate results concerning the current-voltage and noise-voltage curves of the IRLM in a wide range parameter of the model (voltage bias, interaction strength, tunneling amplitude to the dot, etc.).These numerical results are analyzed in the light of some exact out-of-equilibrium field-theory results that have been obtained for a model similar to the IRLM, the boundary sine-Gordon model (BSG).This analysis is in particular based on identifying an emerging Kondo energy scale and relevant exponents describing the high- and low- voltage regimes. At the two specific points where the models are known to be equivalent our results agree perfectly with the exact solution. Away from these two points, we find that, within the precision of our simulations, the transport curves of the IRLM and BSG remain very similar, which was not expected and which remains somewhat unexplained., Le domaine des problèmes quantiques à N-corps à l'équilibre et hors d'équilibre sont des sujets majeurs de la Physique et de la Physique de la matière condensée en particulier. Les propriétés d'équilibre de nombreux systèmes unidimensionnels en interaction sont bien comprises d'un point de vue théorique, des chaînes de spins aux théories quantiques des champs dans le continue. Ces progrès ont été rendus possibles par le développement de nombreuses techniques puissantes, comme, par exemple, l'ansatz de Bethe, le groupe de renormalisation, la bosonisation, les états produits de matrices ou la théorie des champs invariante conforme. Même si les propriétés à l'équilibre de nombreux modèles soient connues, ceci n'est en général pas suffisant pour décrire leurs comportements hors d'équilibre, et ces derniers restent moins explorés et beaucoup moins bien compris. Les modèles d'impuretés quantiques représentent certains des modèles à N-corps les plus simples. Mais malgré leur apparente simplicité ils peuvent capturer plusieurs phénomènes expérimentaux importants, de l'effet Kondo dans les métaux aux propriétés de transports dans les nanostructures, comme les points quantiques. Dans ce travail nous considérons un modèle d'impureté appelé "modèle de niveau résonnant en interaction" (IRLM). Ce modèle décrit des fermions sans spin se propageant dans deux fils semi-infinis qui sont couplés à un niveau résonant -- appelé point ou impureté quantique -- via un terme de saut et une répulsion Coulombienne. Nous nous intéressons aux situations hors d'équilibre où un courant de particules s'écoule à travers le point quantique, et étudions les propriétés de transport telles que le courant stationnaire (en fonction du voltage), la conductance différentielle, le courant réfléchi, le bruit du courant ou encore l'entropie d'intrication. Nous réalisons des simulations numériques de la dynamique du modèle avec la méthode du groupe de renormalisation de la matrice densité dépendent du temps (tDMRG), qui est basée sur une description des fonctions d'onde en terme d'états produits de matrices. Nous obtenons des résultats de grande précision concernant les courbes courant-voltage ou bruit-voltage de l'IRLM, dans un grand domaine de paramètres du modèle (voltage, force de l'interaction, amplitude de saut vers le dot, etc.). Ces résultats numériques sont analysés à la lumière de résultats exacts de théorie des champs hors d'équilibre qui ont été obtenus pour un modèle similaire à l'IRLM, le modèle de Sine-Gordon avec bord (BSG). Cette analyse est en particulier basée sur l'identification d'une échelle d'énergie Kondo et d'exposants décrivant les régimes de petit et grand voltage. Aux deux points particuliers où les modèles sont connus comme étant équivalents, nos résultats sont en accord parfait avec la solution exacte. En dehors de ces deux points particuliers nous trouvons que les courbes de transport de l'IRLM et du modèle BSG demeurent très proches, ce qui était inattendu et qui reste dans une certaine mesure inexpliqué.

We propose a general scheme for the derivation of the signals resonant inelastic (and elastic) x-ray scattering (RIXS) gives access to. In particular, we find that RIXS should allow to directly detect many hidden orders, such as spin nematic, bond nematic, vector and scalar spin chiralities. To do so, we choose to take the point of view of effective operators, leaving microscopic details unspecified, but still keeping experimentally-controllable parameters explicit, like the incoming and outgoing polarizations of the x-rays. We ask not what microscopic processes can lead to a specific outcome, but, rather, what couplings are in principle possible. This approach allows to systematically enumerate all possible origins of contributions to a general RIXS signal. Although we mainly focus on magnetic insulators, for which we give a number of examples, our analysis carries over to systems with charge and other degrees of freedom, which we briefly address. International audience; The magnetic properties of cobalt ferrites nanoparticles prepared using three different processes (thermal decomposition, polyol and co-precipitation synthesis routes) are investigated by X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy and X-ray Magnetic Circular Dichroism. The repartition of cobalt and iron ions amongst the various sites of the spinel structure is determined and correlated with their magnetic properties. The study reports on the influence of the synthesis method on the crystallographic order within a nanoparticle, and hence, on the magnetic anisotropy.
