Stony Coral Tissue Loss Disease (SCTLD) has caused widespread coral mortality in the Caribbean Region. However, how the disease presence alters the microbiome community, their structure, composition, and metabolic functionality is still poorly understood. In this study, we characterized the microbial communities of the tissues of apparently healthy and diseased SCTLD colonies of the species Siderastrea siderea, Orbicella faveolata, and Montastraea cavernosa to explore putative changes related to the presence of SCTLD. Gammaproteobacteria, Alphaproteobacteria, and Bacteroidia were the best represented classes in the healthy tissues of all coral species, and alpha diversity did not show significant differences among the species. The microbial community structure between coral species was significantly different (PERMANOVA: F = 3.46, p = 0.001), and enriched genera were detected for each species: Vibrio and Photobacterium in S. siderea, Spirochaeta2 and Marivivens in O. faveolata and SAR202_clade and Nitrospira in M. cavernosa. Evidence of SCTLD in the microbial communities was more substantial in S. siderea, where differences in alpha diversity, beta diversity, and functional profiles were observed. In O. faveolata, differences were detected only in the community structure, while M. cavernosa samples showed no significant difference. Several microbial groups were found to have enriched abundances in tissue from SCTLD lesions from S. siderea and O. faveolata, but no dominant bacterial group was detected. Our results contribute to understanding microbial diversity associated with three scleractinian coral species and the shifts in their microbiomes associated with SCTLD in the Mexican Caribbean. In 2015, the communities of reef-associated motile macrocrustaceans (decapods and stomatopods) were compared between two coral reefs with contrasting levels of degradation in Puerto Morelos (Mexican Caribbean), "Limones", less degraded, with a healthy live coral cover, and "Bonanza", more degraded, with less live coral and more macroalgae. Since then, several stressors have impacted Puerto Morelos. Massive influxes of floating Sargassum, which reached record levels in 2018, 2021, and 2022, have exacerbated the already high eutrophication of the reef lagoon. An outbreak and rapid propagation of the Stony Coral Tissue Loss Disease in 2018 changed the functionality of reefs. Three back-to-back hurricanes struck the coast close to Puerto Morelos in October 2020 and another one in August 2021. We repeated the study in 2022 to examine the potential changes in the habitat and communities of reef-associated crustaceans since 2015. Reef degradation did not increase significantly between 2015 and 2022, but crustacean species richness, diversity, evenness, and dominance, which differed between reefs in 2015, became similar between reefs in 2022, as did the crustacean community composition. The abundance of herbivore crabs increased in Limones, displacing the coral- and hydrocoral-mutualistic crabs and the abundance of detritivore hermit crabs increased in Bonanza. These results suggest a taxonomic homogenization between reefs, apparently related to subtle ecological changes not necessarily captured by standard metrics of reef condition. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The once-dominant shallow reef-building coral Acropora palmata has suffered drastic geographical declines in the wider Caribbean from a disease epidemic that began in the late 1970s. At present there is a lack of quantitative data to determine whether this species is recovering over large spatial scales. Here, we use quantitative surveys conducted in 107 shallow-water reef sites between 2010 and 2012 to investigate the current distribution and abundance of A. palmata along the Mesoamerican Reef System (MRS). Using historical data we also explored how the distribution and abundance of this species has changed in the northern portion of the MRS between 1985 and 2010–2012. A. palmata was recorded in only a fifth of the surveyed reef sites in 2010–2012. In the majority of these reef sites the presence of A. palmata was patchy and rare. Only one site (Limones reef), in the northernmost portion of the MRS, presented considerably high A. palmata cover (mean: 34.7%, SD: 24.5%). At this site, the size-frequency distribution of A. palmata colonies was skewed towards small colony sizes; 84% of the colonies were healthy, however disease prevalence increased with colony size. A comparison with historical data showed that in the northern portion of the MRS, in 1985, A. palmata occurred in 74% of the 31 surveyed sites and had a mean cover of 7.7% (SD = 9.0), whereas in 2010–2012 this species was recorded in 48% of the sites with a mean cover of 2.9% (SD = 7.5). A. palmata populations along the MRS are failing to recover the distribution and abundance they had prior to the 1980s. Investigating the biological (e.g., population genetics) and environmental conditions (e.g., sources of stress) of the few standing reefs with relatively high A. palmata cover is crucial for the development of informed restoration models for this species. The article presents a study which seeks to investigate the impact of hurricanes Emily and Wilma in 2005 on the coral community in Cozumel Island, Mexico. It notes that the researchers assessed several reefs before and after the hurricanes. Data revealed that a 56% in cumulative decline of live coral was observed after the hurricanes. The result also showed a uniform reduction in different coral genera. Further analysis also revealed a directional change of more homogenous composition of the species in the area.
