4. A five-axis parallel kinematic mirror unit for soft X-ray beamlines at MAX IV

Abstract

With the introduction of the multi-bend achromats in the new fourth-generation storage rings the emittance has decreased by an order of magnitude resulting in increased brightness. However, the higher brightness comes with smaller beam sizes and narrower radiation cones. As a consequence, the requirements on mechanical stability regarding the beamline components increases. Here an innovative five-axis parallel kinematic mirror unit for use with soft X-ray beamlines using off-axis grazing-incidence optics is presented. Using simulations and measurements from the HIPPIE beamline at the MAX IV Laboratory it is shown that it has no Eigen frequencies below 90 Hz. Its positioning accuracy is better than 25 nm linearly and 17-35 mu rad angularly depending on the mirror chamber dimensions.

Abstract

An overview of the design of compact elliptically polarizing undulator with small round magnetic gap to provide full polarization control of synchrotron radiation in a more cost effective manner and consuming less built in space than the state of the art devices. This type of undulator is meant as source for the potential future Soft X-ray (SXL) FEL beamline using the linear accelerator at MAX IV. In addition, it offers new capabilities for future beamlines at the 3 GeV ring to use full polarization control to photon energies using the fundamental harmonic which are not attainable with today’s technology of the out-of-vacuum insertion devices at 3 GeV beam energy., Proceedings of the 10th Int. Abstract

The MAX IV LINAC operates both as a full-energy injector for two electron storage rings, and as a driver for a Short Pulse Facility (SPF). There are also plans to build Soft X-ray Laser (SXL) beamlines at the end of the existing LINAC. For SPF and SXL operation, it is important to characterize beam parameters such as bunch profile, slice energy spread and slice emittance. For these measurements, two 3 m long transverse deflecting RF structures are being developed. The structures are operating at S-band, and it is possible to adjust the polarization of the deflecting fields. In order to verify the RF concept, a short 9-cell prototype was constructed. Abstract

The MAX IV facility consists of a 3 GeV storage ring, a 1.5 GeV storage ring and a full energy injector linac. The storage ring magnets are based on an integrated "magnet block" concept. Each magnet block holds several consecutive magnet elements. The 3 GeV ring consists of 140 magnet blocks and 1.5 GeV ring has 12 magnet blocks. During the installation, procedures were developed to guarantee block straightness.
