SUSTAINABILITY , *HEALTH facilities , *WASTE minimization , *MEDICAL quality control , *MEDICAL personnel - Abstract
Recently, hospitals around the world have been taking important steps to improve their sustainable environmental practices and minimize their negative effects on the environment while providing health services. In this context, in Türkiye, the "Zero Waste Regulation" was published in 2019 and it was reported that all institutions and organizations should gradually establish, document, and implement the "Zero Waste Management System" (ZWMS) until 31 December 2022. "Zero Waste", which is a full system approach to prevent waste, takes the generation of waste under control through recycling and reuse; it focuses on restructuring and improving production and/or service systems to reduce waste. With the publication of the Zero Waste Regulation, health institutions and organizations took on important responsibilities in the fight against the epidemic, due to the first cases of COVID-19 at the global level. For this reason, the majority of health institutions had to complete their transition to ZWMS during the pandemic period. It is necessary for the hospital management to implement ZWMS, which will help prevent, reduce, and recycle waste by including the patient and their relatives, especially the hospital staff. In order to ensure the continuity of this system, it is important to establish ZWMS policies and to create "Corrective and Preventive Actions-CPA" by constantly checking the practices on site. The effectiveness of ZWMS will be primarily ensured by preventing the generation of waste. In addition, the success of waste reduction, recycling, and recovery efforts will play an important role in this process. Processing and monitoring the waste instantly in the system according to its type and amount on a unit basis, comparing it with the data of previous years and questioning the unusual waste movements will increase the effectiveness of ZWMS policies. The aim of this study is to increase the awareness of health personnel on this issue, together with the concepts and models that will contribute to a better understanding of ZWMS, which is still in the implementation phase, in health institutions, and to offer suggestions to health managers on how to improve the quality of health care provided by ensuring sustainability. BLUE economy , *CARBON dioxide , *ECONOMIC impact , *GROSS domestic product , *SOCIAL impact , *ENTERPRISE content management - Abstract
Ocean-sea acidification is an important issue that threatens the blue economies of countries. Increases in carbon dioxide concentration are making the seas increasingly acidic. The acidification of the seas causes a decrease in carbonate saturation and adverse biological effects on marine organisms. The impact of the entire ecosystem due to acidification has both social and economic consequences. The main purpose of this study is to examine whether the intra-industry trade structure of Turkey's blue economy (for the fishery sector) is affected by acidification. Therefore, in the study, the total greenhouse gas equivalent to carbon dioxide, real gross domestic product and Grubel-Lloyd index values for the period 1990-2019 were used as variables. ARDL bounds test and ECM method were used to determine the cointegration relationship between the variables and to obtain the short-long-term coefficients. According to the results of the analysis; i) There is a cointegration relationship between the variables. ii) In the long run, increases in total greenhouse gas equivalent to carbon dioxide increase intra-industry trade. iii) Increases in real gross domestic product in the short and long run increase intra-industry trade. As a result, ocean-sea acidification has the power to change the intra-industry trade that belongs to blue economies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

CARBON emissions , *FOREIGN investments , *ECONOMIC expansion , *POLLUTION - Abstract
Developing countries are strongly interested in attracting foreign direct investment to improve the lack of capital and finance economic growth. To do this, they usually implement less stringent environmental policies for foreign investment. However, this strategy comes with the expense of more pollution and environmental disasters in some cases. This study aims to reveal the relationship between foreign investment, growth, and environmental pollution. However, the type of investment matters when it comes to pollution. Thus, we consider the components of foreign investment as greenfield and brownfield investments, where the former is an investment made from scratch and the latter is a purchase of an existing firm. The empirical analysis covers the period between 1990 and 2020. The primary data sources are the World Bank and OECD. We used three VAR models to investigate the effects of greenfield and brownfield investments on carbon emission and growth. We highlight that the change in total foreign direct investment and greenfield variables was statistically significant in explaining the change in CO2 emissions, but brownfield investments were found to be statistically insignificant in explaining CO2 emissions. CITIES & towns , *TRAFFIC density , *HEAVY metal toxicology , *AILANTHUS altissima , *BLACK locust - Abstract
Urban pollution, which reduces the quality of life of residents and poses a vital threat to human health, can be reduced by effective city planning. Pollution due to heavy metals is increasing in today's cities, and these heavy metals are of particular concern because as they do not naturally decompose on earth, they can bioaccumulate in the human body and cause serious diseases. It is, however, possible to reduce exposure to pollutants through making spatial decisions. The research aims to determine the variation of concentrations of Mn by location, which is greatly affected by the poor air quality caused by traffic density. Within the scope of the study, the following species were analyzed: Robinia pseudoacacia, Platanus orientalis, Acer negundo, Fraxinus excelsior, Ailanthus altissima, Aesculus hippocastanum, and Tilia tomentosa. Samples were taken from Ulus, the traditional center of the political capital of Ankara, and Kızılay, its modern center. Although the two areas of research are close to each other, the traffic density had increased due to the current planning decisions in Kızılay, while Ulus was chosen as a region with relatively low vehicle density due to its historical structure. It was found that four wood species have higher values in their leaves and wood, and five wood species have higher values in their bark in the Kızılay region, as compared to Ulus. This demonstrates that motor vehicles have a significant effect in Kızılay. In addition, the values of the leaves and bark of the same wood are higher in Kızılay than Ulus. It has therefore been determined that A.negundo and F. excelsior are suitable species for use in urban planting design to monitor the concentrations of heavy elements in the air.

SUSTAINABLE development , *ECOLOGICAL impact , *NATURAL resources , *ENVIRONMENTAL quality , *ENVIRONMENTAL degradation , *ECONOMIC globalization , *ENERGY consumption - Abstract
Population growth, urbanization, industrialization and technological developments have an important place in natural resource consumption. These developments are among the main dynamics in terms of economic growth in national economies. However, with the related developments, an increase in environmental degradation has been observed. Determining the cause of these deteriorations is considered to be important for increasing environmental quality and ensuring sustainable economic development. In the study, the determinants of ecological footprint in ASEAN-5 countries consisting of Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, Singapore and the Philippines are investigated. Westerlund (2006) panel cointegration test is used as an empirical method, which considers cross-sectional dependence. The period of 1980-2018, in which the globalization process generally deepened, is chosen as the sample period. General globalization index, economic growth, energy consumption and ecological footprint variables of ASEAN-5 countries are used. Empirical results reveal the existence of a cointegration relationship between these variables in ASEAN-5 countries. Augmented Mean Group (AMG) is applied as the panel cointegration coefficient estimator. AMG findings show that globalization, economic growth and energy consumption increase the ecological footprint of ASEAN-5 countries across the panel. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
With the development of industry, the increase in human needs has led to an increase in production and consumption. The inadequacy of waste recycling in the production-consumption-waste cycle chain brings environmental, climatic, economic and many problems together. Within the framework of the 2015 Circular Economy Action Plan, the European Union has taken many decisions, including waste management. Improvement of recycling capacity and waste management for EU member and candidate countries is at the top of the targeted strategies. In this study, after the 2015 Circular Economy Action Plan, the waste management performances of EU countries for the years 2017, 2018 and 2019 were examined with the Artificial Neural Networks method based on Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA). DEA input variables; municipal waste generation per capita, import of waste for recycling, national expenditures for environmental protection, real GDP per capita, human development index, plastic packaging waste production per capita, output variable; taken as the recycling rate of municipal waste. Efficiency scores obtained with DEA were used as output variables in artificial neural networks, and predictions were made for the efficiency scores of countries in 2019 with artificial neural networks feed-forward networks. In the findings, it has been concluded that Slovenia, Latvia, Germany, Ireland, Luxembourg and Belgium are the countries that are active in all years and are frequently included in the reference clusters of other countries. It has been observed that the 2019 prediction values obtained from the data set trained with Feed Forward Artificial Neural Networks are very close to the real efficiency values. - Abstract
The acceleration of globalization, population growth, industrialization and technological developments cause environmental effects as well as economic effects. As environmental problems threaten the future, both national and international measures have begun to emerge. As a result of these measures, the concept of sustainability has emerged. Sustainability means ensuring efficiency in resource distribution in terms of economic, social and environmental aspects for future generations and ensuring that future generations benefit from today's opportunities. It is aimed to achieve growth and sustainable development without causing environmental damage. For this, technological development and innovation tools come to the fore. In this study, the effects of environmental technological innovations, renewable energy consumption and economic growth on environmental pollution are examined with annual data for the period 1990- 2018. While the number of patents related to the environment is taken as an indicator of environmental technological innovations, ecological footprint measurement is used as an indicator of environmental pollution. The concept of ecological footprint, which is one of the most important indicators of environmental damage, measures environmental pollution in a comprehensive way. In this study, in which the empirical analysis method is used, the cointegration relationship between the variables is tested with the ARDL bounds test. As a result of the ARDL bounds test, environmental technological innovations and increases in renewable energy consumption both in the short and long term reduce the ecological footprint; however, it is found that economic growth increases the ecological footprint. In order to increase environmental quality, it is recommended to increase environmental technological innovations and increase renewable energy consumption. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study aims to investigate the relationship between FDIs and environmental pollution in countries classified by per capita income. In this study, in which the 1992-2019 period data were used, the relations between the variables were examined by panel data co-integration and causality analysis. Within the Westerlund Cointegration Analysis scope, a co-integrated relationship is observed between the FDI in GDP and CO2 emission variables in low and middle-income country groups in the long run; in the high-income country group, however, no significant relationships could be found between the variables. On the other hand, according to analysis results, no causality relationship is observed in low-income countries in the short run, while a causal relationship from FDIGDP to CO2 emissions is observed in middle and high-income countries. - Abstract
The relationship between nature and nature-human is one of the main subjects of art since cave drawings. Nature, which serves as a backdrop for the figure, becomes a topic in itself during the Renaissance and later. Along with the Industrial Revolution, the development of technology, the growth of cities, the change in the appearance of cities and pollution are evident in Claude Monet's drawings on the River Thames in London. Burning too much coal to meet the demand for cheap and reliable energy, and the coal being burned without filtering, causes air pollution, which is revealed in the foggy image Monet loved in London and in his paintings. Umberto Boccioni, on the other hand, saw the steam coming out of trains and the exhaust gas coming out of cars as a reflection of the dynamic conditions of modern life and associated it with movement and progress. With factories and factory chimneys stripped of human presence and polluting the sky, Charles Sheeler was emphasizing a new landscape under the influence of industrialization. Although environmental pollution can be seen in these artworks, this was not the main thing that the artists wanted to bring to the agenda. As the end of the 20th century approaches, the issues of environmental pollution and climate change, which are mentioned together with land art, begin to be emphasized in contemporary art. In these artworks, the aim of the artists is to show the increasing and inevitable effects of climate change and to raise awareness. In this research with descriptive survey model, global climate change; analyzed through the artworks of prominent contemporary artists in this regard. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Environmental pollution is defined as the disruption of normal ecological balance with emmision of various substances and energy residues as a result of human activities. Animal production is one of the major human activity that enables this emission to increase significantly. Although ruminants play an important role in the effects of animal production on environmental pollutant emissions, the effects of poultry production and broiler production are also worth considering. As in all livestock types, the main factor that has a direct impact on environmental pollutant emissions is feeding for this animal types too. High nutrient needs of broilers and production processes of feed containing these nutrients; greenhouse gas causes increased nitrogen and phosphorus emissions; consequently, they cause air, soil and water pollution to multiply. Changes in protein and amino acid levels or the use of certain feed additives in feeds affect the emission value of broiler production. In addition, the feeding methods also has an effect on these emission values. When these effects are taken into consideration, it is possible to reduce the emission values in broiler production. In this review, environmental effects of broiler nutrition examined in terms of feed production, nutrient emission by manure, presentation of feed and feed form.

In recent years, environmental pollution, climate change and excessive use of natural resources have caused problems in the ecosystem. Honey bees are among the most affected by this environmental pollution. Climate change and environmental pollutants cause irregularities in colony development, the formation of weak colonies, the spread of diseases, the inability to return to the hive of field bees, and their mortality and low productivity. Turkey ranks second after China in the production of honey in the world. Honey is a strategic product for Turkey. This study investigated the effect of some environmental pollutants on honey yield in Turkey. This study used the time series analysis covers the years 1990-2017. In the research, honey yield as dependent variable, as independent variables; methane (CH4), carbon dioxide (CO2), diazot oxide (N2O) release, pesticide, insecticide, fungicide, herbicide use and industrial production index were used. After the stationary of the series was tested with ADF Unit Root test, the relationship between the variables was examined by Johansen Co-integration analysis. The effect of environmental pollutants on honey yield was tested by the FMOLS analysis method. According to the FMOLS results, the increase of 1% pesticide use, CH4, CO2, and N2O resulted in a decrease in honey yield of 0.36%, 0.70%, 0.74%, and 0.37% respectively. On the other hand, the increase of 1% insecticide, fungicide, herbicide use and industrial production index caused 0.15%, 0.14%, 0.09% and 0.84% increase in honey yield, respectively.

CARBON emissions , *FOREIGN investments , *POLLUTION , *ENVIRONMENTAL quality , *PATH analysis (Statistics) , *PER capita - Abstract
Multinational companies, by taking advantage of the pollution haven hypothesis, bring polluting technologies to host countries within the scope of foreign direct investments (FDIs), creating negative effects on the national environment and therefore on population welfare. The current study examines the impact of FDI on environmental quality, the effect of FDI on population welfare, and thus the impact of environmental pollution on population welfare in sub-Saharan African (SSA) countries. Due to the presence of indirect effects in the analysis, a path analysis and bootstrap approach were used. In the models, net inflows FDI is an exogenous variable and real GDP per capita (proxy of welfare per capita) is an endogenous variable. In addition, carbon dioxide emission per capita, the mortality rate due to non-communicable diseases and health expenditures per capita are mediating variables. According to the findings, an increase in FDI in SSA countries decreases the environmental quality. Intermediate variables were used between FDI and population welfare. Therefore, when carbon dioxide emissions per capita and the mortality from noncommunicable diseases mediate the relationship between FDI and population welfare, the increase in FDI reduces population welfare. When only the mortality rate from non-communicable diseases mediates the relationship between carbon dioxide emissions and population welfare per capita, the increase in carbon dioxide emissions per capita lowers population welfare per capita. Furthermore, an increase in FDI increases population welfare when health expenditures per capita are included in models. At this point, SSA countries should seek an endogenous source of improving the welfare rather than relying entirely on FDI. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Environment, the main source of the welfare of societies, has become an important threat to welfare today. The effectiveness of the measures to be taken for "qualified environment", included in the list of basic needs, depends on the definition of the relationship between environmental pollution and macroeconomic variables. In this study, for the 1995-2016 period, the relationship between the environmental pollution and macroeconomic variables affecting the environmental pollution in Denmark, Hungary, Italy, Malta, Netherlands, Portugal, Slovakia, Switzerland, Britain and Turkey was analyzed by panel data method. The environmental pollution variable has been calculated through Principal Component Analysis (PCA) by considering gases (CO2, CH4, N2O, NH3, NMVOC, CO and NOx) causing air pollution. Explanatory variables are per capita income, foreign direct investments, human development index and environmental taxes. According to the Pedroni co-integration test, variables are co-integrated in the long run. Pedroni FMOLS and DOLS results show that the increase in human development index in the long term significantly reduces environmental pollution. While environmental taxes have no effect according to FMOLS, DOLS results indicate that environmental taxes increase environmental pollution. Therefore, it is possible to say that the development of environmental awareness in societies will have stronger effects on environmental pollution than authoritarian practices such as taxes. Purpose: In this study, the impact of the economic growth and the environmental regulations on air pollution were investigated in Turkish economy on the basis of the years 1990-2015. Methodology: In the study the stationarity test for the variables was performed using the ADF unit root test without structural break. The unit root test outcomes showed that the ARDL bounds test was appropriate in determining the long-term relationship between the variables. Finally, Frequency domain causality test were used to investigate the causality relationship between variables.Findings: Boundary test findings revealed a long-term relationship between the variables. Long-term results have shown that economic growth has a positive effect on air pollution, whereas the number of patents related to environmental technologies has a negative effect on air pollution. According to the causality test findings, bidirectional causality was found between air pollution and environmental regulations in the short-term and mid-term. The environmental regulations have a significant impact on reducing air pollution in the short and mid-term.Originality: There is no other paper in the literature that analyzes the effects of environmental regulations on air pollution in Türkiye. Therefore, this is the first paper to analyze the impact of environmental regulations on air pollution for the Turkish economy. In addition, the effect of environmental technologies on air pollution was also investigated., Amaç: Bu çalışmanın amacı, ekonomik büyüme ve çevresel düzenlemelerin hava kirliliği üzerine etkilerini Türkiye ekonomisi için 1990-2015 yılları kapsamında araştırmaktır.
