Abstract Background The diaphragm, the main muscle involved in respiration and one of those responsible for maintaining life, is still little explored in terms of its morphology in wild animals. There are few studies on the anatomy of Eira barbara, a carnivorous mustelid that is a victim of the urbanization process. In order to contribute to the conservation of the species, we described the topography and morphology of the diaphragm, which may be involved in injuries caused by the impacts of human activities. Results We studied five specimens of Eira barbara, whose diaphragmatic muscle had a dorsal insertion on the 14th thoracic vertebra, laterally between the 8th and 13th intercostal space (EIC) and ventrally on the 8th EIC, with attachment to the xiphoid process. Consisting of three muscle regions (lumbar, costal and sternal), the diaphragm in Eira barbara showed radially arranged bundles, with the right costal muscle being slimmer than the left; the left pillar wider than the right and between them were the aortic and esophageal hiatuses. The Y-shaped tendinous center housed the foramen of the vena cava bordering the right costal region. In the most dorsal portion of the diaphragm, between the costal regions and the diaphragmatic pillar, we found two triangular-shaped regions devoid of muscle. Conclusions Our findings, when compared with the current literature, indicate that the location and positioning of the diaphragm are independent of the physical conformation of the species, and that the right costal region, as well as the triangular areas devoid of musculature, may be fragile points for herniation in cases of Eira barbara being run over.

Dasyprocta fuliginosa had a gestational period of approximately 104 days, to date there are few descriptions of fetal development in this species. From animals collected through subsistence hunting in the Amazon, it was possible to follow the fetal development of the female urogenital apparatus of animals from 56 days until the end of gestation. The kidneys of younger fetuses showed discreet lobations, and from the 75th gestational day onwards they were defined as smooth unilobed organs. The glomerular composition of the cortical region of the youngest fetuses had morphological differences, with poorly developed and undifferentiated capillaries. This composition was transmuted around the 82nd gestational day. Throughout the fetal development process the ureters inserted dorsolaterally to the urinary bladder, communicating with the fetal umbilical funiculus through the urachus, and with the urethra. The same occurred with the reproductive system, which was composed of a double-type uterus, with two uterine horns, a septum and two individual cervical canals, in addition to two uterine tubes, two ovaries, a vagina with a semi-open vaginal membrane, and a vulva, which made up the external genitalia. This constitution reveals that D. fuliginosa during the fetal phase has a well-developed morphology of the reproductive and urinary systems.

Bradypus variegatus, vulgarmente conhecida como preguiça comum, pertence a um grupo individualizado de mamíferos, com peculiaridades morfológicas e biológicas já descritas, porém, pouco se sabe sobre questões estruturais do seu trato digestório, incluindo a morfologia do esôfago. Diferindo dos mamíferos em geral quanto ao trajeto completo do órgão, o esfíncter esofágico cranial localiza-se dorsalmente à laringe, desviando à esquerda da traqueia, mantendo-se adjacente a ela, ainda no antímero esquerdo, ao longo da porção cervical. No tórax, seguiu pelo mediastino, atravessou transversalmente o diafragma através do hiato esofágico, alcançando o estômago. Histologicamente, apresentou o mesmo padrão tecidual ao longo das três porções, destacando-se a presença de três camadas musculares, adensando na porção torácica, e na adventícia cercada pela cadeia nervosa simpática, adjacente à região cárdica. Essas características histológicas conferem ao esôfago dessa espécie arquitetura peculiar, que pode explicar o comportamento de deglutição destes indivíduos frente aos seus hábitos posturais.

Callithrix penicillata is a non-human primate endemic to Brazil. It is widely used in biomedical studies; however, little is known about the anatomy of this species, including the vascular aspects. Therefore, this work describes the aortic arch of this species, in order to corroborate comparative studies and hemodynamic tests for experimental models. Five C. penicillata were evaluated, which presented two distinct types of aortic arch angioarchitecture, one commonly found in other mammals, and another similar to Saguinus niger, suggesting that this pattern may be related to the fact of both species belong to the family Callithrichidae.

Abstract Among the Nematodes of Cerdocyon thous, the genus Pterygodermatites is characteristic for presenting cuticular projections along the body, being mentioned in different hosts in South America, although there are no records of its occurrence in the Amazon Biome. To enable further exploration in terms of their morphology and morphometry, the nematodes collected from cadavers of C. thous were fixed and observed using bright field microscopy and scanning electron microscopy, revealing characteristics compatible with P. (Multipectines) affinis, thus contributing more information about the geographic distribution of the parasite, as well as knowledge of the helminthological fauna of wild mammals in the Brazilian Amazon.

Abstract Studies of helminths in road-killed wild animals are still uncommon but may provide promising results since they can identify the parasites in juvenile and adult hosts and meet the recommendations of current discussions on bioethics that prioritize alternative methods for the use of animals. This study evaluated three Cerdocyon thous individuals that were donated after dying from being run over. Two of them had small nematode adults in the epithelial and connective tissues of the tongue. The diagnosis was based on the presence of eggs, observed in histological sections, and morphological characteristics of the nematodes in the tongue. Morphologically, this nematode has a body with transverse grooves, simple mouth opening and no lips, esophagus and stichosome with stichocytes and bacillary bands along the body, which is characteristic morphology of the family Capilariidae and genus Capillaria . The presence of this nematode in the tongue of C. thous is an extremely important fact that contributes to what is known about the biodiversity of zoonotic parasites in wild canid populations. However, an explanation for these findings remains unclear because, until now, this has not been observed in the biological cycle of the species.

The black tamarin (Saguinus niger) occurs in all states of Brazil, including large urban centers due to population growth. Considering that the practice of medicine and surgery on wild animals has become more prevalent in veterinary medicine, this work describes the aortic arch of S. niger with the goal of aiding emergency surgeries. Four animals were studied. Three individuals had an aortic arch like the arch described for domesticated animals, including the presence of a left subclavian artery and brachiocephalic artery. In one individual, the arrangement of the collateral branches of the aortic arch followed the pattern found in humans, including the presence of a brachiocephalic artery, left common carotid artery, and left subclavian artery. Regardless of the initial configuration of the aortic arch of the black tamarin, the right subclavian, right vertebral, right internal thoracic, right costocervical and right superficial cervical arteries arose, sequentially, from the brachiocephalic artery. The branches formed by the left subclavian artery correlated with the right antimer.

O objetivo do presente trabalho foi descrever a anatomia cardíaca da espécie Sapajus apella, fazendo um estudo da morfologia e irrigação cardíaca, aorta abdominal e suas ramificações em duas fêmeas e dois machos desta espécie. Os animais foram dissecados em nível de arco aórtico, o qual foi canulado e nele injetado solução de látex Neoprene 650, corado com pigmento vermelho. Em seguida, foram fixados em solução aquosa de formoldeído a 10%. O coração dos exemplares analisados apresentava-se perfeitamente envolto pelo pericárdio, com a base do órgão na altura da terceira costela e localização dorsal. A morfologia interna do coração e suas ramificações revelam grande parte de suas estruturas-padrões descritas na literatura. As ramificações da aorta abdominal mostraram-se semelhantes às de outras espécies já descritas na literatura, apresentando como primeiro ramo a artéria celíaca, que se trifurcou de maneira clássica em gástrica esquerda, esplênica e hepática. O ramo seguinte foi o da artéria mesentérica cranial, seguido das artérias renais e mesentérica caudal. A região terminal da aorta originou as ilíacas externas e internas e, por fim, a sacral mediana, que estava ausente em um dos animais analisados.

Researchers have used dogs with neurological sequelae caused by distemper as an experimental model for multiple sclerosis, owing to the similarities of the neuropathological changes between distemper virus-induced demyelinating leukoencephalitis and multiple sclerosis in humans. However, little is known about the role of mesenchymal stem cells in treating such clinical conditions. Therefore, we investigated the use of mesenchymal stem cells in four dogs with neurological lesions caused by the distemper virus. During the first year after cellular therapy, the animals did not demonstrate significant changes in their locomotive abilities. However, the intense (Grade V) myoclonus in three animals was reduced to a moderate (Grade IV) level. At one year after the mesenchymal stem cell infusions, three animals regained functional ambulation (Grade I), and all four dogs started to move independently (Grades I and II). In two animals, the myoclonic severity had become mild (Grade III). It was concluded that the use of mesenchymal stem cells could improve the quality of life of dogs with neurological sequelae caused by canine distemper, thus presenting hope for similar positive results in human patients with multiple sclerosis.

The genus Aotus is found in South America and is known for its nocturnal habit. The morphology of the genus is poorly understood even though it is used in biomedical research. The objective of this study was to identify the collateral branches of the abdominal aorta of two females and one male Aotus azarae infulatus (commonly known as the night monkey). The vessels were observed and stained with Neoprene latex and radiopaque contrast. The animals were fixed in an aqueous solution of 10% formaldehyde via intramuscular and intracavitary routes, dissected and radiographed. It was observed that the celiac artery was divided into three subjacent branches, the gastric, hepatic and splenic arteries. The left and right renal arteries originated from a common trunk in two animals (animals 1 and 2), while the adrenal artery in one of the animals was derived from the celiac trunk and renal artery (animal 2). In one animal the mesenteric artery flow gave rise to individual cranial rectal, sigmoid and left colic arteries (animal 3). In the three animals the abdominal aorta bifurcated in the final portion of the abdomen, with the external and internal iliac artery on each side, and then the median sacral artery. These anatomical variations need to be identified and reported because these animals are frequently used in clinical and surgical, veterinary practices.

Resumo: Sapajus apella é um primata do Novo Mundo de porte médio e com distribuição geográfica desde a América do Sul até a Argentina. São bons modelos para estudo e nos últimos anos vêm sendo amplamente utilizados para este fim. A destruição progressiva do habitat natural desses animais os tem levado a migrarem para outras regiões, tornando-os, assim, mais susceptíveis à caça predatória. A necessidade de preservação das espécies silvestres desperta interesse por um maior conhecimento anatômico e clínico para estes animais. O presente estudo teve como objetivo examinar e descrever os aspectos morfológicos, quanto a anatomia macroscópica e microscópica dos órgãos do sistema urinário de fêmeas da espécie Sapajus apella visando estender o conhecimento anatômico para esta espécie. Foram utilizadas quatro fêmeas, oriundas do Centro Nacional de Primatas de Ananindeua/PA. istema urinário de S. apella apresenta características similares a outros primatas tanto humanos quanto não humanos e aos animais domésticos. Os rins apresentaram aspectos macroscópicos semelhantes aos rins de humanos, mas com a mesma classificação de outros primatas não humanos e alguns animais domésticos. A bexiga assemelhou-se aos animais domésticos e aos primatas de maneira geral, humano e não humano. O mesmo ocorreu quando analisamos estes órgãos histologicamente.

Abstract: Chlorocebus aethiops is a species of non-human primate frequently used in biomedical research. Some research involves this species as an experimental model for various diseases and possible treatment with stem cells. The bone marrow is one of the main sources of these cells and provides easy access. The aim of this study was to standardize the protocol of collection and separation of bone marrow in C. aethiops. Ten animals were submitted to puncture of bone marrow with access to the iliac crest and cell separation by density gradient. The bone marrow of C. aethiops had an average of 97% viability. From the results achieved, we can conclude that C. aethiops is an excellent model to obtain and isolate mononuclear cells from bone marrow, fostering several studies in the field of cell therapy.

ABSTRACT The wall of the diaphragm can be affected by changes caused by physical trauma, allowing the passage of viscera between the abdominal cavity and thoracic cavity, thus reducing the space for pulmonary expansion, leading to the formation of hernia and possible death. Thus, we aimed to characterize, size and determine the topography of the diaphragmatic muscle in the Southern Tamandua, since clinical and surgical activities in wild animals have become a reality more and more present in veterinary medicine. We used six adult animals, x-rayed and dissected, followed by collection of fragments of muscular portions for histological analysis. Initially we observed that the animals presented 17 thoracic vertebrae, 3 lumbar vertebrae and 5 sacral vertebrae. The diaphragm was conformed by three segments: sternal, costal and right and left diaphragm pillar, with presence of tendinous centre that housed the passage of the caudal vena cava, called foramen of the caudal vena cava. Dorsally to the tendinous centre, already in the muscle portion, we located the esophageal and aortic hiatus. These findings, as well as the microscopic, were equivalent to that found in the general literature also, corroborating with descriptions already carried out in other mammals’ diaphragms.

ABSTRACT The wall of the diaphragm can be affected by congenital or acquired alterations which allow the passage of viscera between the abdominal and chest cavities, allowing the formation of a diaphragmatic hernia. We characterized morphology and performed biometrics of the diaphragm in the common squirrel monkey Saimiri sciureus. After fixation, muscle fragments were collected and processed for optical microscopy. In this species the diaphragm muscle is attached to the lung by phrenopericardial ligament. It is also connected to the liver via the coronary and falciform ligaments. The muscle is composed of three segments in total: 1) sternal; 2) costal, and 3) a segment consisting of right and left diaphragmatic pillars. The anatomical structures analyzed were similar to those reported for other mammals. Histological analysis revealed stable, organized muscle fibers with alternation of light and dark streaks, indicating transverse striation.

Sciurus igniventris is a squirrel with broad distribution in South America. We examined one female adult specimen which was donated after death by trampling. The aim of this work was describe the morphological characteristics of mammary gland of one specimen. The body was fixed using 10% aqueous formaldehyde. Tissues were processed and slides prepared following standard histological protocols. Morphological analysis of the mammary glands revealed similarities to those described in the literature for domestic and wild mammals. As special features in kind, macroscopically identified a pair of thoracic glands, followed by three pairs of abdominal glands. Microscopically the abundant presence of connective tissue dividing the alveolar-tubular glands. Similar to that described for domestic and wild mammals.

Roeboides xenodon (dentudo) and Orthospinus franciscensis (piaba-facão) are small Teleostei with omnivorous feeding habits. In order to study the morphology of the digestive tract, specimens of O. franciscensis (n = 15) and R. xenodon (n = 16) were collected in the São Francisco River, Três Marias - MG and fixed in 4% formalin. In both species, a short esophagus began in the head and after the transverse septum, remained in the peritoneal cavity up to the first section of the stomach. In R. xenodon, the esophagus showed primary thick folds, narrow and longitudinally arranged, separated by deep grooves and free edges and lines. In O. franciscensis, the esophagus displayed longitudinal primary folds, thick and wide, no deep grooves, but with free edges and few anastomoses. The stomach was of the cecal type in “Y.” The intestines consisted of two parts: a longer and more convoluted anterior part and a short posterior section. The beginning of the hindgut was marked by an abrupt change in the pattern of the mucosa. There was an anal sphincter at the distal end of the digestive tract. The digestive tract of both species is complete and adapted to their carnivorous habits.

The Cerdocyon thous is a canid that has a wide distribution in South America and, besides some general aspects, its morphology is little known in the literature, especially regarding the nervous system. With the aim of elucidating the anatomical composition of brachial plexus, we studied three male specimens from Paragominas-PA, donated to the Morphological Laboratory of Animal Research (LaPMA), Federal Rural University of Amazonia (UFRA), after death by trampling. The animals were fixed in an aqueous solution of 10% formaldehyde for bilateral dissection of the origin of the brachial plexus. The brachial plexus of C. thous is derived from the last three cervical nerves and the first thoracic nerve (C6-T1). The main nerves that compose it, with their respective origins were the suprascapular nerve, subscapular nerve and musculocutaneous nerve (C6-C7), axillary nerve (C7-C8), radial nerve (C7-T1 and C7-C8), median nerve, ulnar nerve, thoracodorsal and thoracic lateral nerve (C8-T1). We conclude that the brachial plexus of C. thous is similar to that described for the domestic dogs, showing small differences in the composition of some nerves.

É geralmente formado por contribuições dos três últimos nervos cervicais e dos dois primeiros nervos torácicos. Devido à escassez de informações relativas à neuroanatomia, objetivou-se buscar a descrição da morfologia macroscópica do plexo braquial da jaguatirica (Leopardus pardalis). Foram utilizados dois exemplares de jaguatirica provenientes da área de Mina Bauxita Paragominas – PA, Brasil/Empresa Terra LTDA, doados após morte por atropelamento ao Laboratório de Pesquisa Morfológica Animal (LaPMA) da Universidade Federal Rural da Amazônia (UFRA), os quais foram fixados em solução aquosa de formoldeído a 10% por via intramuscular. Após fixação os animais foram dissecados, possibilitando a observação e identificação dos ramos ventrais dos nervos espinhais cervicais e torácicos que participaram da formação do plexo braquial. O plexo braquial mostrou-se formado por quatro troncos, os quais originaram os ramos ventrais dos nervos espinhais cervicais C6, C7 e C8 e do primeiro torácico T1. Tais troncos deram origem aos nervos supraescapular, subescapular, musculocutâneo, axilar, radial, mediano, ulnar, toracodorsal e torácico lateral.

Tendo em vista a carência de informações a respeito da anatomia dos mustelídeos, assim como a importância de um modelo vascular para a compreensão das lesões neurológicas no sistema nervoso central, este trabalho objetivou descrever a morfologia e a composição do circuito arterial da base do encéfalo do E. barbara fornecendo dados para estudos futuros. Para tal utilizou-se dois espécimes, machos, jovens, provenientes, da área de Mina Bauxita Paragominas-PA, doados após morte ao LaPMA. Os espécimes tiveram o sistema arterial preenchido com látex Neoprene 650 corado em vermelho e foram fixados em formaldeído 10% sendo posteriormente dissecados para sistematização dos vasos. Os animais estudados apresentaram o circuito arterial da base do encéfalo suprido pelas artérias carótidas internas e artéria basilar. A artéria carótida interna, após atravessar a dura-máter, continuou cranialmente emitindo as artérias cerebrais médias e terminando como artérias cerebrais craniais que se anastomosam fechando rostralmente o circuito arterial. As artérias comunicantes caudais integraram a artéria basilar ao circulo arterial e emitiram as artérias cerebrais caudais e cerebelares rostrais. A artéria basilar revelou como principais ramos, as artérias cerebelares médias e caudais.

Spotted paca (Cuniculus paca) is a rodent species from the family Cuniculidae, found in South America, from the Orinoco River Basin to Paraguay. Although widely studied with regard to its morphological and reproductive aspects, still there’re no records on the morphology of the male reproductive system in this species. Thus, this study aimed to evaluate not only the macro and microscopic anatomy of the external genital organs in this species, but also their topography. We studied the external genital organs of 10 adult spotted pacas; 5 specimens, fixed in a 10% aqueous formaldehyde solution, were macroscopically studied and from 5 specimens we collected fragments from the reproductive system, for microscopic analysis. The testicles showed a parenchyma structured in seminiferous tubules and the germinal epithelium rested on its basal membrane. These organs were located in the abdominal cavity, the inguinal path, or within the scrotum. Penis, fibroelastic, was located in the pubic region, in caudal direction. Its glans, coated by keratinized epithelium, were covered by the prepuce and, below this, we identified a slender cartilaginous structure with serrated edges. A couple of bone spurs was located into a bag ventral to the urethra, whose mucosa was lined by transitional epithelium. The epididymal duct was balled up in the head, had a body and tail, and its head was lined by pseudo-stratified stereociliated epithelium, and the tail by simple cubic epithelium; from this, the deferent duct stemmed, lined by columnar stratified epithelium.

The short-eared dog (Atelocynus microtis) is one of the rarest species of South American canids. Aiming to describe the morphology of this animal and enhance the study of comparative neuroanatomy, we studied the anatomical makeup of the brachial plexus of a female specimen from Paragominas (PA). The specimen was donated, after natural death, to the Institute of Animal Health and Production (ISPA) at the Universidade Federal Rural da Amazônia (UFRA). The animal was fixed in 10% formalin and later dissected bilaterally to reveal the origin of the brachial plexus. In A. microtis, the brachial plexus is derived from the ventral rami of the last three cervical spinal nerves and the first thoracic spinal nerve (C6-T1). The brachial plexus derivatives with their respective origins were: suprascapular n. (C6 and C7), subscapular n. (C6), musculocutaneous n. (C6 and C7), axillary n. (C6 and C7), radial n. (C7 and C8), median n. (C7, C8 and T1), ulnar n. (C8 and T1), thoracodorsal n. (C8 and T1), cranial pectoral nn. (C7, C8 and T1) and caudal pectoral nn. (C8 and T1). The brachial plexus of A. microtis resembled what has been described for the domestic dog, in relation to the origin of the initial and final segment, but showed differences in the composition of some nerves.

A paca (Cuniculus paca) é uma espécie de roedor da família Cuniculidae, encontrada na América do Sul, desde a Bacia do Rio Orinoco até o Paraguai. Apesar de amplamente estudada quanto aos aspectos morfológico e reprodutivo, ainda não há registros sobre a morfologia do aparelho reprodutor masculino dessa espécie. Assim, objetivou-se avaliar não só a anatomia macro e microscópica dos órgãos genitais externos dessa espécie, mas, também, sua topografia. Foram estudados os órgãos genitais externos de 10 pacas, machos, adultas; 5 espécimes, fixados em solução aquosa de formol a 10%, foram estudados macroscopicamente e de 5 espécimes foram coletados fragmentos do aparelho reprodutor, para análise microscópica. Os testículos apresentavam parênquima estruturado em túbulos seminíferos e o epitélio germinativo repousava sobre sua membrana basal. Esses órgãos estavam localizados na cavidade abdominal, no trajeto inguinal ou no interior do escroto. O pênis, fibroelástico, localizava-se na região púbica, em direção caudal. Sua glande, revestida por epitélio queratinizado, era recoberta pelo prepúcio e, abaixo deste, identificou-se uma estrutura delgada cartilagínea com bordas serreadas. Um par de esporões ósseos abrigava-se em um saco ventral à uretra, cuja mucosa era revestida por epitélio de transição. O ducto epididimário apresentava-se enovelado na cabeça, continha corpo e cauda, sendo a cabeça revestida por epitélio pseudoestratificado estereociliado, e a cauda por epitélio cúbico simples; desta originava-se o ducto deferente, revestido por epitélio estratificado colunar.

Encontrada principalmente na América do Sul, a irara é um carnívoro pertencente à família Mustelidae, a qual pouco se tem informações sobre sua morfologia de forma geral. Diante disso, objetivou-se conhecer melhor parte do sistema nervoso desta espécie, mais precisamente a topografia do cone medular, a fim de subsidiar intervenções anestésicas peridurais nesta, uma vez que a clínica de animais selvagens vem crescendo a cada dia. Foram estudados três exemplares machos, adultos, provenientes da área de Mina Bauxita, Paragominas, doados ao Laboratório de Pesquisa Morfológica Animal (LaPMA), Universidade Federal Rural da Amazônia (UFRA), Belém, os quais foram radiografados e dissecados ao nível lombossacral, seguido de exposição do cone medular. Este, por sua vez, situou-se entre L4-L6 possuindo comprimento médio de 4,31cm, o que nos levou a sugerir a região sacrococcígea como ponde ideal para prática de anestesias epidurais nesta espécie.

Saguinus niger popularly known as Sauim, is a Brazilian North primate. Sympathetic chain investigation would support traumatic and/or cancer diagnosis which are little described in wild animals. The aim of this study was to describe the morphology and distribution of sympathetic chain in order to supply knowledge for neurocomparative research. Three female young animals that came death by natural causes were investigated. Animals were fixed in formaldehyde 10% and dissected along the sympathetic chain in neck, thorax and abdomen. Cranial cervical ganglion was located at the level of carotid bifurcation, related to carotid internal artery. In neck basis the vagosympathetic trunk divides into the sympathetic trunk and the parasympathetic vagal nerve. Sympathetic trunk ran in dorsal position and originated the stellate ganglia, formed by the fusion of caudal cervical and first thoracic ganglia. Vagal trunk laid ventrally to heart and formed the cardiac plexus. In abdomen, on the right side, were found the celiac ganglion and cranial mesenteric ganglion; in the left side these ganglia were fusioned into the celiac-mesenteric ganglion displaced closely to the celiac artery. In both sides, the caudal mesenteric ganglion was located near to the caudal mesenteric artery.O Saguinus niger popularmente conhecido como Sauim, é um primata do Norte do Brasil. A investigação da cadeia simpática pode dar suporte a diagnósticos traumáticos e/ou de câncer que são pouco descritos em animais selvagens. O objetivo deste estudo foi descrever a morfologia e a distribuição da cadeia simpática para suprir conhecimentos em pesquisas neurocomparativas. Foram investigadas três fêmeas jovens que vieram a óbito por causas naturais. Os animais foram fixados em formaldeído 10% e dissecados ao longo da cadeia simpática no pescoço, tórax e abdômen. O gânglio cervical cranial foi localizado ao nível da bifurcação carotídea, relacionado à artéria carótida interna. Na base do pescoço o tronco vago simpático se divide em tronco simpático e nervo vago parassimpático. O tronco simpático corre na posição dorsal e originou os gânglios estrelados, formados pela fusão dos gânglios cervicais caudais e do primeiro gânglio torácico. O tronco vagal passa ventralmente ao coração e forma o plexo cardíaco. No abdômen, no lado direito encontrouse o gânglio celíaco e o mesentérico cranial, no lado esquerdo estes gânglios estavam fusionados no gânglio celíaco-mesentérico disposto próximo à artéria celíaca. Em ambos os lados, o gânglio mesentérico caudal estava localizado próximo à artéria mesentérica caudal.

Tamandua tetradactyla, Xenarthra, is a native species from South America which, due to the few number of studies on its biology, still has many unknown aspects in its morphology. Taking into account the importance of morphological data for various studies, this paper aimed to elucidate the branching of the abdominal aorta in this species to foster the development of further studies. To do this, 4 specimens were used, 2 male and 2 female, all young, from the Bauxite Mine – Paragominas, Para, Brazil, donated after death due to running over to the Animal Morphology Research Laboratory (LaPMA) of Universidade Federal Rural da Amazonia (UFRA). The arterial system was filled with contrasted latex and the animals were fixed in a formaldehyde solution (10%), and then dissected, in order to evidence the abdominal aorta and its collateral branches. The parietal branches consisted of 1 pair of caudal phrenic arteries, 2 pairs of intercostal arteries, and 3 pairs of lumbar arteries. Among the visceral branches, stood out: celiac artery; cranial mesenteric artery; adrenal arteries; renal arteries; caudal mesenteric artery; and external, internal, and median sacral iliac arteries, formed from the final portion of the abdominal aorta. Testicular and ovarian arteries originated from the renal arteries, differing from that described in various species.

Saguinus niger popularly known as Sauim, is a Brazilian North primate. Sympathetic chain investigation would support traumatic and/or cancer diagnosis which are little described in wild animals. The aim of this study was to describe the morphology and distribution of sympathetic chain in order to supply knowledge for neurocomparative research. Three female young animals that came death by natural causes were investigated. Animals were fixed in formaldehyde 10% and dissected along the sympathetic chain in neck, thorax and abdomen. Cranial cervical ganglion was located at the level of carotid bifurcation, related to carotid internal artery. In neck basis the vagosympathetic trunk divides into the sympathetic trunk and the parasympathetic vagal nerve. Sympathetic trunk ran in dorsal position and originated the stellate ganglia, formed by the fusion of caudal cervical and first thoracic ganglia. Vagal trunk laid ventrally to heart and formed the cardiac plexus. In abdomen, on the right side, were found the celiac ganglion and cranial mesenteric ganglion; in the left side these ganglia were fusioned into the celiac-mesenteric ganglion displaced closely to the celiac artery. In both sides, the caudal mesenteric ganglion was located near to the caudal mesenteric artery.

O circuito arterial do encéfalo é de grande importância, pois é responsável pela vascularização do encéfalo, sendo este o principal órgão do sistema nervoso central e responsável por receber e processar informações. A espécie estudada foi escolhida por tratar-se de um mamífero pertencente à ordem Xenarthra e os integrantes dessa ordem são pouco estudados, devido à dificuldade de acesso a esses animais. Para desenvolver este trabalho, foram estudados cinco espécimes de Tamanduá-mirim (Tamandua tetradactyla). O material teve o sistema arterial injetado com látex Neoprene 650, corado em vermelho e fixado em solução aquosa de Formaldeído 10%, sendo posteriormente dissecados para sistematização dos vasos. O circuito arterial da base do encéfalo do tamanduá-mirim circunda o corpo mamilar, a fossa interpenduncular, o túber cinéreo, a hipófise e o quiasma óptico. A porção rostral desse circuito é caracterizada pelos ramos rostrais das artérias carótidas internas e a porção caudal é constituída pelas artérias comunicantes caudais e ramos caudais da artéria carótida interna. Esta espécie animal apresenta o tipo II de irrigação encefálica no qual existe a participação das artérias carótidas internas e do sistema vértebro-basilar para a formação do circuito arterial.The arterial circuit of the brain is of great importance because it is responsible for vascularization of the brain and this is the main organ of the central nervous system and responsible for receiving and processing information. The species was chosen because it is a mammal belonging to the Xenarthra order and the members of this order are little studied because of the difficulty of access to these animals. To develop this work were studied five specimens of lesser anteater (Tamandua tetradactyla). The material had the arterial system filled with Neoprene latex stained in red, fixed in aqueous solution of 10% paraformaldehyde and dissected for vessels systematization. The encephalon arterial circuit of lesser anteater surrounds the mammillary body, the interpeduncular fossa, tuber cinereum, hypophysis and optic chiasm. The rostral portion of this circuit is characterized by rostral branches of internal carotid arteries and the caudal portion is formed by caudal communicant arteries from internal carotid artery. This animal species had a type II of encephalic irrigation with participation of internal carotid arteries and vertebrobasilar system to formation of arterial circuit.

Tamandua tetradactyla, Xenarthra, é uma espécie nativa da América do Sul que, devido aos poucos estudos acerca de sua biologia, ainda apresenta vários aspectos desconhecidos em sua morfologia. Tendo em vista a importância de dados morfológicos para diversos estudos, objetivou-se elucidar a ramificação da aorta abdominal dessa espécie para subsidiar a realização de futuros estudos. Para tal, foram utilizados quatro espécimes, sendo dois machos e duas fêmeas, todos jovens, provenientes da área de Mina Bauxita - Paragominas-PA, doados após morte por atropelamento ao Laboratório de Pesquisa Morfológica Animal (LaPMA) da Universidade Federal Rural da Amazônia (UFRA). O sistema arterial foi preenchido com látex contrastado e os animais fixados com solução de formol (10%), sendo posteriormente dissecado, para evidenciar a aorta abdominal e seus ramos colaterais. Os ramos parietais eram constituídos por um par de artérias frênicas caudais, dois pares de artérias intercostais e três pares de artérias lombares. Dentre os ramos viscerais, destacaram-se: artéria celíaca; artéria mesentérica cranial; artérias adrenais; artérias renais; artéria mesentérica caudal; e artérias ilíacas externas, internas e sacral mediana, que se formaram a partir da porção final da aorta abdominal. As artérias testiculares e ováricas tiveram origem nas artérias renais, divergindo daquilo descrito em diversas espécies.

Os autores descreveram a origem e composição do plexo braquial de quatro Saimiri sciureus, pertencentes ao Centro Nacional de Primatas (Cenp), Ananindeua/PA, os quais foram fixados com formaldeído e dissecados. Os achados revelaram que o plexo braquial desta espécie é constituído por fibras neurais provenientes da união das raízes dorsais e ventrais das vértebras cervicais C4 a C8 e torácica T1, e organizado em quatro troncos. Cada tronco formou um nervo ou um grupo de nervos, cuja origem variou entre os animais; na maioria, foi encontrado o tronco cranial originando o nervo subclávio, o tronco médio-cranial dando origem aos nervos supraescapular, subescapular, parte do radial, e em alguns casos ao nervo axilar, nervo musculocutâneo e ao nervo mediano; o tronco médio-caudal formou parte do nervo radial, e em alguns casos os nervos axilar, nervo musculocutâneo, nervo mediano, nervo toracodorsal, nervo ulnar e nervo cutâneo medial do antebraço, sendo os dois últimos também originados no tronco caudal.The authors described the origin and composition of the brachial plexus of four Saimiri sciureus, from the National Primate Center (Cenp), Ananindeua/PA, which were fixed with formaldehyde and dissected. Findings revealed that the brachial plexus of this species is composed by nervous fibers from the roots of cervical vertebrae C4 to C8 and thoracic vertebrae T1, and organized into four branchs. Each branch has formed a nerve or a group of nerves, the origin was varied between animals, mostly were found the cranial trunk originate the subclavian nerve; the medium-cranial originate the suprascapular, subscapular, part of radial and in some cases the axillary, musculocutaneous and median nerves; the medium-caudal trunk originate part of radial nerve and in some cases the axillary, musculocutaneous, median, thoracodorsal, ulnar and medial cutaneous of forearm nerves, the last two nerves also originate from the caudal trunk.

The aim of this work is to study the morphological characteristics of the trachea of Saimiri sciureus through quantification and measurement of the cartilaginous rings, providing information to facilitate the election of more appropriate endotracheal tube, laryngeal mask or tracheostomy tube for anesthetic and emergency procedures, as it is a species of Neotropical primates most commonly used as biological models, and little is known about their morphology. Nine animals were investigated, being 4 adults and 5 young acquired from the Centro Nacional de Primatas (National Primate Center - CENP) - Ananindeua - PA, which died from natural causes and then fixed in aqueous buffered formalin 10%. Saimiri sciureus trachea comprises an average of 32.8 incomplete rings and an average length of 3.74 cm in young animals, while in adults it demonstrated an average of 30.25 rings and average length of 3.67 cm. The shape of the light and its proportion varied along the trachea. Endotracheal tube with a diameter the 2.0 - 2.5mm, laryngeal mask number 1.0 or tracheostomy tube neonatal Shiley number 3.0, can be placed in animals weighing 600g - 1.2 Kg. Given the great importance of the species studied, which is widely used as a biological model, the detailing on the morphology and morphometry of tracheal animal studies provides new approaches needed in respiratory emergency, as well as, facilitates the development of future anesthetic protocols.Estudou-se as características morfológicas da traqueia do Saimiri sciureus através da quantificação e mensuração dos anéis cartilaginosos, a fim de fornecer informações que facilitem a eleição mais adequada de sonda endotraqueal, máscara laríngea ou cânula de trasqueostomia para procedimentos anestésicos e de emergência, visto que é uma das espécies de primatas neotropicais mais comumente utilizadas como modelos biológicos e pouco se sabe sobre sua morfologia. Foram utilizados nove animais, sendo quatro adultos e cinco jovens, oriundos do Centro Nacional de Primatas (CENP) - Ananindeua - PA, os quais vieram a óbito por causas naturais e, posteriormente, foram fixados em solução aquosa de formol tamponado a 10%. A traqueia do Saimiri sciureus é composta por uma média de 32, 8 anéis incompletos nos animais jovens e comprimento médio de 3, 74cm, já os adultos apresentam uma média de 30, 25 anéis e comprimento médio de 3, 67cm. A forma da luz e suas proporções variaram ao longo da traqueia. Sonda endotraqueal com diâmetro de 2, 0 - 2, 5mm, máscara laríngea número 1, 0 ou cânula de traqueostomia neonatal Shiley número 3, 0, podem ser colocados em animais pesando 600g - 1, 2 K. Dada a grande importância da espécie estudada, que é amplamente utilizada como modelo biológico, o detalhamento sobre o estudo da morfologia e morfometria traqueal animal, fornece novas abordagens necessárias em emergência respiratória, bem como facilita o desenvolvimento de futuros protocolos anestésicos.

Popularly known as the ocelot, Leopardus pardalis occurs throughout Brazil in all ecosystems, but prefers riparian regions and forests. The objective of this study was to learn more about the macroscopic, anatomical aspects of the plexus lumbossacral of this species. Three specimens were studied, two males and one female, from the region near the Bauxite Mine in Paragominas, PA. The specimens were donated to the Laboratório de Pesquisa Morfológica Animal (LaPMA) at UFRA after being run over (authorization numbers 485/2009 and 522/2009). The animals were fixed in an aqueous solution of 10% formaldehyde and then the hind limb was dissected by removing some muscles to expose the nerves. In two animals, the femoral nerve originated in the fourth lumbar nerve (L4) and transformed into the saphenous nerve. The obturator nerve and sciatic nerve originated in the last lumbar nerve (L5), and the latter was divided into branches that formed the tibial and common peroneal nerves, which dorsally formed the cranial gluteal and caudal gluteal nerves.

Conhecido popularmente como jaguatirica, o Leopardus pardalis está presente no Brasil, em todos os ecossistemas, mas preferencialmente nas matas ciliares e florestas. Este trabalho objetivou elucidar aspectos macroscópicos referentes à anatomia do plexo lombossacral. Foram utilizados três animais, sendo dois machos e uma fêmea, provenientes da área de Mina Bauxita - Paragominas-PA, doados após morte por atropelamento ao Laboratório de Pesquisa Morfológica Animal (LaPMA), da Universidade Federal Rural da Amazônia. Os animais foram fixados em solução aquosa de formaldeído a 10%, seguido de dissecação dos membros pélvicos com o objetivo de expor os nervos, removendo-se parcialmente alguns músculos, dissecando-se a origem do plexo desde a intumescência lombar. Em dois animais, o nervo femoral apresentou origem no quarto nervo lombar (L4), seguindo e se transformando em nervo safeno. O nervo obturatório e o nervo isquiático tiveram origem no último nervo lombar (L5), porém, este último se dividiu em ramos originando os nervos tibial e fibular comum, originando dorsalmente os nervos glúteo caudal e glúteo cranial.

Aiming to enrich the anatomical study and knowledge and foster new researches with wild animals, three runned over lesser anteaters (Tamandua tetradactyla) were studied, being two males and one female, from Paragominas, Para, Brazil, under the licenses SEMA-PA 455/2009 and 522/2009, which were donated to Universidade Federal Rural da Amazônia (UFRA) after death due to natural causes. The arterial system was filled with red latex and the animals were fixed and dissected for observation of the arrangement of the collateral branches of the aortic arch. First, the brachiocephalic trunk was identified, from which originated the right subclavian artery and the bicarotid trunk, which bifurcated into right and left common carotid artery. The second branch originated in the aortic arch was the left subclavian artery, which branched into the vertebral artery, internal thoracic artery, costocervical trunk, and superficial cervical artery. These same branches were also present in the right subclavian artery, which, in the axillary level, was named the axillary artery. In general, it was observed that the three lesser anteaters studied presented a different vascular pattern from others mammals already studied, including species from the Xenarthra superorder, suggesting that in this species there might exist a particular pattern of distribution of the main branches from the aortic arch.

Primate order includes around 180 species. Morphological aspects of New World non-human primates (NHP) have been extensively investigated since last century. General commonsense describes oral cavity adaptations according to diet and feeding, dentition, tongue projection and head shape. Morphological appearance and dimension of the hard palate have been outstanding as interest in many species including man. Six young Saimiri sciureus hard palate were investigated. We measured the hard palate distance (HL), intercanine distance (ICD), intermolar distance (IMD), and interpremolar distance (IPD). Complete and incomplete palatine crests were quantified. We believe that better understanding of the mouth roof morphology will contribute to improve the management of captive animal's diet in order to re-introduce the animals in its habitat.

Com o objetivo de ampliar os estudos e conhecimentos anatômicos, bem como impulsionar novas pesquisas com animais selvagens, estudou-se três exemplares de tamanduá-mirim (Tamandua tetradactyla) sendo dois machos e uma fêmea, animal proveniente de Paragominas-PA, sob autorização SEMA-PA Nº 455/2009 e 522/2009, doados à UFRA após óbito por causas naturais. O sistema arterial foi preenchido com látex corado em vermelho e os animais foram fixados e dissecados para observação da disposição dos ramos colaterais do arco aórtico. Inicialmente destacamos o tronco braquiocefálico, de onde tem origem a artéria subclávia direita e o tronco bicarotídeo, que se bifurca em artéria carótida comum direita e esquerda. O segundo ramo originado no arco aórtico trata-se da artéria subclávia esquerda que se ramifica em artéria vertebral, artéria torácica interna, tronco costocervical e artéria cervical superficial. Esses mesmos ramos também estão presentes na artéria subclávia direita, a qual, em nível axilar, passa a ser chamada de artéria axilar. De modo geral, podemos observar que os ramos colaterais deste animal assemelham-se aos modelos já descritos anteriormente para alguns animais domésticos, com mínimas diferenças, como por exemplo, a presença de ramificações das artérias carótidas comuns direita e esquerda, que se direcionam ao extenso músculo esternoióideo, irrigando-o.

Saimiri sciureus is a small New World primate (NHP) commonly called macaco-de-cheiro that inhabits the tropical forests of the Amazon basin. Anatomical features are not well studied in most primates, and the encephalic morphology and related structures are still quite unknown. Comparative anatomy of the meninges in South American primates is still scarce. Dura mater, arachnoid and pia mater are a group of stratified layers that surrounds and promotes protection to the medulla spinalis. This study aimed to shed light on the anatomy of dura mater in Samiri sciureus in order to contribute to the neuroscience in primates. We investigated three young females and two males of S. sciureus. Specimens were fixed through perfusion with a 10% formaldehyde aqueous solution. In S. sciureus encephalus few gyrus and circunvolutions, and a very delicate system consisting of eight sinus venosus was found between the dura mater layers. Based on our findings, we can conclude that the Saimiri sciureus dura mater is quite similar to other mammals, however we detected a new sinus venosus formation at the level of parietal bone, named sinus parietalis, what appears to be its first description.

The crab-eating fox is the most common Canidae of South America. In general, its diet varies according to the season and inhabited region. In this study, the medullary cone of the crab-eating fox was described because of interests in comparative anatomy, with the goal of providing information that could assist in epidural anesthesia, which cannot be efficiently practiced without knowledge of this anatomical region. We investigated an adult male from the Bauxite Mine (Paragominas, PA), which was dissected in the lumbosacral region. The medullary cone was 10.13 cm long; the base began at the L6 and the apex was at the S3. Considering that the specimen studied had nine lumbar and four sacral vertebrae, we conclude that the sacrococcygeal region is probably the most suitable place for epidural anesthesia.

Atelocynus microtis and Cerdocyon thous are mammals in the Canidae with different habits and geographical distributions. The fi rst species is found in the Amazon Basin in Brazil, Peru, Colombia, Ecuador and Venezuela, and probably lives a nocturnal and solitary life. The second species occurs in Colombia, Venezuela, Suriname, Bolivia, Paraguay, Uruguay, Brazil and northern Argentina, is also nocturnal, but forms couples that tend to stay together for a long time. There is a lot of interest in understanding more about these animals, which have a wide distribution in Brazil, and morphological studies are an important contribution towards their preservation and protection because reports of short-eared dogs in captivity are rare, whereas those of the crab-eating fox are more common. In this study we used an individual of each species from Paragominas (PA), under the authorization permits SEMA-PA No. 455/2009 and 522/2009, which were donated to UFRA after the animals died of natural causes. The animals were fixed in 10% formalin and dissected to make morphological descriptions of the flexor and extensor muscles. This study found the same muscle groups that occur in other carnivores previously described, and contributes to understanding the morphology, as well as an approach for possible orthopedic surgical procedures, of these species.

Epidural anesthesia is one of the most common anesthetic techniques used because it is safe, efficient and can be quickly implemented. However, for each species undergoing this procedure, precise knowledge of the topography of the medullar cone is necessary. Therefore, this study aimed to describe the topography of the medullar cone of the short-eared dog (Atelocynus microtis), in order to provide relevant anatomical data for the practice of epidural anesthesia on this species. We used an exemplary young male, from the Bauxite Mine area (Paragominas, PA), which died of natural causes and was fixed and stored in 10% aqueous formaldehyde. The animal was dissected by removing the skin and epiaxial musculature, followed by the section and removal of vertebral arches, which exposed the medullar cone. The specimen studied had seven lumbar and three sacralvertebras. After the separation of the anatomical structures, the conus medullaris was measured with a digital caliper. The lumbar intumescence was located between L3 and L6, the medullar cone was observed in L7 and its apex in the S3, and had a total length of 3.9cm. We suggest that the sacrocaudal region is the most appropriate place to perform epidural anesthesia in Atelocynus microtis.

A anestesia epidural é uma das técnicas anestésicas mais utilizadas devido à boa margem de segurança, eficiência e rapidez na aplicação. Decorrente de sua importância faz-se necessário ter conhecimento preciso da topografia do cone medular das espécies. Portanto, este trabalho teve como objetivo descrever a topografia do cone medular do cachorro-do-mato-de-orelhas-pequenas (Atelocynus microtis), com o propósito de fornecer dados anatômicos úteis para a prática de anestesias epidurais. Foi utilizado um exemplar jovem, macho, após morte natural, proveniente da Área de Mina Bauxita de Paragominas-PA, o qual foi fixado e armazenado em solução aquosa de formaldeído a 10%. O animal Foi dissecado mediante afastamento da pele e da musculatura epiaxial, procedendo-se a secção e remoção dos arcos vertebrais favorecendo a visualização da medula espinhal. O Atelocynus microtis apresentou sete vértebras lombares e três sacrais. Após a individualização das estruturas anatômicas de interesse, foram tomadas as mensurações do cone medular com o auxílio de paquímetro. A intumescência lombar localizou-se entre as vértebras L3 e L6, o cone medular foi observado em nível da sétima vértebra lombar (L7) e seu ápice na terceira vértebra sacral (S3) totalizando um comprimento de 3,9 cm acompanhado pela cauda equina. Assim, sugerimos a região sacrocaudal como o local mais apropriado para realização de anestesia epidural no Atelocynus microtis.

Atelocynus microtis e o Cerdocyon thous, são mamíferos da família Canidae com distribuição geográfica e hábitos diferenciados. O primeiro animal é uma espécie encontrada em grande parte da Bacia Amazônica no Brasil, Peru, Colômbia, Equador e provavelmente Venezuela, sendo animal de hábitos noturnos e de vida solitária, já o cachorro-do-mato apresenta distribuição na Colômbia, Venezuela, Suriname, Bolívia, Paraguai, Uruguai, Brasil e Norte da Argentina, com hábitos noturnos e os casais formados tendem a ficar juntos por um longo período. Trata-se de espécies com notório interesse de estudo, com ampla distribuição no Brasil, assim, estudos morfológicos representam um fator importante para a preservação e proteção já que relatos do cachorro-do-mato-de-orelhas-curtas são raros como sua presença em cativeiros, já o cachorro-do-mato é mais encontrado em cativeiros. Neste estudo utilizamos um animal de cada espécie, proveniente de Paragominas-PA, sob autorização SEMA-PA Nº 455/2009 e 522/2009, doados à UFRA após óbito por causas naturais. Os animais foram fixados em solução formol a 10%, dissecados para descrição morfológica dos músculos flexores e extensores, resultando nos mesmos grupos musculares encontrados em outros carnívoros descritos anteriormente, contribuindo desta forma, com o estudo da morfologia, favorecendo o tipo de abordagem para possíveis procedimentos cirúrgicos ortopédicos nesta espécie.

A anestesia caudal foi proposta pela primeira vez em 1926 e diversas técnicas foram desenvolvidas para anestesiar os nervos espinhais lombares e sacrais. Os métodos para anestesia epidural exigem conhecimento da anatomia da região envolvida. Desta forma, objetivou-se determinar a topografia do cone medular da preguiça (Bradipus variegatus), para fornecer recursos aos profissionais da área clínica para que, desta forma, seja possível a realização de anestesia epidural nesta espécie silvestre de nossa fauna. Foram dissecados quatro exemplares adultos de preguiça, dois machos e duas fêmeas que foram a óbito por causas naturais e obtidos junto ao Parque Zoobotânico do Museu Paraense Emilio Goeldi, Belém/Pará. Após a dissecação observou-se que o cone medular encontra-se entre as vértebras L3 e S1 com comprimento médio de 2,7cm, e a intumescência lombar apresentou comprimento médio de 1,0cm, estando localizada entre L1 e L3 nos quatro animais estudados. Desta forma, conclui-se que o melhor local para a realização de anestesia epidural na preguiça está entre as vértebras L1 e L3

Innumerable species of wild animals have not yet been described anatomically. The ocelot (Leopardus pardalis), a wild cat with ample geographic distribution, is an example of this. With the aim of describing the morphology of this animal, we studied the reproductive system of a young male taken from the area of Mina de Bauxita Paragominas/PA – Vale do Rio Doce, that was donated post mortem to the Instituto de Saúde e Produção Animal (ISPA) of the Universidade Federal Rural da Amazônia (UFRA). The animal was fixed with formaldehyde 10% and kept in this same solution until the dissection of system under study. The masculine reproductive organs of the ocelot (Leopardus pardalis) are represented by: a pair of testis; an epididymis consisting of a head, body and tail; accessory genital glands, i.e. prostate and bulbourethral glands; a masculine urethra and penis.

Epidural anesthesia is a regional anesthetic technique that is generally used with good, safe results, and it has been applied in the last 80 years through numerous methodologies aimed at testing anesthesia of the spinal nerves of the lumbar and sacral regions. It is necessary to know not only the anesthetic procedures, but also to apply anatomical knowledge of the species to be manipulated. Thus, the objective of this study was to determine the topography of the medullary cone of the coati, supporting the implementation of anesthetic techniques in this species of wild carnivores. We used three adult animals obtained from the CECRIMPAS scientific breeding unit. Faculdade de Medicina Veterinária da Fundação de Ensino Octávio Bastos – UNIFEOB. The animals were fixed and dissected along the entire length of the medullary cord. The conus had its base between the 5th and 6th lumbar vertebrae and apex at the 3rd sacral vertebra, with total length ranging between 5.2cm and 5.8cm. Thus, we conclude that the most appropriate place to perform epidural anesthesia in the coatimundi is in the sacrocaudal region.

A anestesia epidural é uma das técnicas anestésicas regionais mais utilizadas e com boa margem de segurança, sendo aplicada a mais de 80 anos através de inúmeras metodologias ensaiadas com o objetivo de anestesiar nervos espinhais da região lombar e sacral. Para tanto, faz-se necessário o conhecimento não só dos procedimentos anestésicos como também dos conhecimentos anatômicos da espécie a ser manipulada. Assim, este trabalho teve por objetivo determinar a topografia do cone medular do quati, subsidiando a realização de técnicas anestésicas nesta espécie de carnívoro silvestre. Foram utilizados três animais adultos, machos, provenientes do Criatório Científico – CECRIMPAS, da Faculdade de Medicina Veterinária do Centro Universitário da Fundação de Ensino Octávio Bastos – UNIFEOB. Os animais foram fixados e dissecados em toda sua extensão medular. O cone medular tem sua base entre a 5ª e 6ª vértebras lombares e ápice na 3ª vértebra sacral, com comprimento total variando entre 5,2cm e 5,8cm. Assim, concluímos que o local mais adequado para a realização de anestesia epidural no quati é na região sacrocaudal.

Buffalo is an important livestock resource, with a great participation in agricultural systems, providing milk, meat, and work power. Umbilical cord is responsible for maternal-fetal nutrients exchange during pregnancy, and its alterations can compromise the fetal development. We investigated ten pregnant uteruses collected from cross-bread buffaloes in different stages of gestation. Pregnancy and fetal age was determined by measuring the apex sacral length and development period was calculated by previously published formula. Umbilical cords were measured for length determination. Umbilical cord vascular net and anastomosis were observed by injection of Neoprene latex. Histological sections of the umbilical cord were studied after stain with HE, picrossirius, toluidine blue, orceine, and PAS reaction. Buffaloes' umbilical cord was formed by two central arteries, an allantois duct and two peripheral veins. The artery wall was composed by large quantity of collagen, elastic fibers, fibroblasts and large number of vasa vasorum. The allantois duct was located between the arteries and presented a great number of small nourishing vessels. Small nourishing vessels should be carefully considered to avoid to be mistaken to the arterials and veins vasa vasorum. Medium length of umbilical cord from buffalos was 11.8cm (minimum of 6.8cm and maximum of 17.4cm).Búfalo é uma importante fonte de recurso nos rebanhos animais, apresentando uma grande participação na agropecuária, provendo leite, carne e força de trabalho. O Cordão umbilical é responsável pela troca de nutrientes materno-fetais durante a gestação, e suas alterações podem comprometer o desenvolvimento fetal. Nós investigamos dez úteros gravídicos de búfalos de raças cruzadas em fases diferentes de gestação. O período de gestação e a idade fetal foram determinados pelo comprimento ápice sacral, aplicando fórmulas previamente estabelecidas. Posteriormente mediu-se o comprimento do cordão umbilical. A rede vascular do cordão umbilical e anastomoses foram observadas por injeção ou látex de neoprene. O cordão umbilical foi estudado a partir de cortes histológicos, corados por HE, picrossirius, azul de Toluidina, orceína e reação histoquímica de PAS. O cordão umbilical de búfalos é formado por duas artérias centrais, ducto alantóide e duas veias periféricas e apresentam forma de ampulheta. A parede da artéria umbilical é composta por grande quantidade de fibras colágenas e elásticas, fibroblastos e um grande número de vasa vasorum. O ducto alantóide fica alocado entre as artérias e apresenta um grande número de pequenos vasos nutritivos. Os vasos nutritivos devem ser cuidadosamente identificados para evitar-se confundi-los com vasa vasorum. O comprimento médio do cabo de cordão umbilical dos búfalos era 11.8cm (mínimo de 6.8cm e máximo de 17.4cm).

With the great development of the gestational studies in all of the species, we noticed the necessity of adaptations of these techniques for prenatal diagnosis in dogs. Based on this, we studied the feasibility of chorion biopsy guided by ultrasound. Our results demonstrated accuracy on the sex determination being 2 males and 12 females, as well as it would be possible to identify chromosome alteration due to the quality of samplings. Sex determination was accomplished with the identification of Y gene chromosomes in PCR technique. After the collection, fragments were prepared for light microscopy studies and revealed fetal chorion tissue, blood colloid and erythrocyte. In the whole material we found hemosiderin impregnations due to the hemolysis and to the residue of blood of the placental marginal hematomes. The submitted female dogs to this technique demonstrated normal puppy births without death.Com o grande desenvolvimento dos estudos gestacionais em todas as espécies, percebemos a necessidade de adaptarmos técnicas para diagnóstico pré-natal para cães. Assim, buscamos bases nas técnicas já existentes empregadas em humanos, e através destas, conseguimos estabelecer um método para coleta em cães, utilizando PCR para garantirmos a integridade das amostras. O procedimento foi realizado através de punção da cinta placentária com agulha de biopsia guiada por ultra-som. De todas as 14 amostras coletadas, duas apresentaram-se positivas para o cromossomo Y, presente apenas em machos, confirmando assim a viabilidade das amostras demonstrando com isso que através desta técnica podemos coletar material fetal para diagnóstico de alterações gênicas ou cromossômicas presentes nos cães antes mesmo destes virem a termo. A microscopia de material revelou fragmentos de cório fetal, colóide sangüíneo e eritrócitos. Em todo o material encontramos impregnações de hemosiderina devido à hemólise e ao resíduo de sangue dos hematomas marginais placentários. As cadelas submetidas a esta técnica tiveram partos normais sem óbito de nenhum filhote.

Resumo: O cachorro-do-mato (Cerdocyon thous) pertence à família Canidae, encontra-se amplamente distribuído pela América do Sul. Devido à escassez literária a respeito da morfologia desta espécie objetivamos colaborar com o conhecimento da anatomia do arco aórtico e seus ramos colaterais. Foram estudados quatro animais, sendo 2 machos e 2 fêmeas oriundos da Mina de Bauxita, Paragominas, Pará, Brasil/Terra Ltda, sob autorização da SEMA-PA nº 455/2009, que morreram por causas naturais. O sistema arterial foi preenchido com látex corado em vermelho e fixado em solução aquosa de formoldeído 10%. O arco aórtico de Cerdocyon thous apresentou em sua origem apenas dois vasos, o tronco braquiocefálico e a artéria subclávia esquerda. Do tronco braquiocefálico originou-se o tronco bicarotídeo, que se bifurcou nas artérias carótidas comum direita e esquerda, e artéria subclávia direita. Das artérias subclávias ocorreu a formação do tronco costocervical, artéria vertebral, artéria torácica interna, artéria cervical superficial e ao atingir o espaço axilar passa a ser chamada de artéria axilar em ambos os antímeros. Concluímos que o arco aórtico de Cerdocyon thous é similar ao de outros animais domésticos com relação ao número de ramificações em sua origem.

Por ser uma espécie pouco estudada, principalmente do ponto de vista morfológico, objetivou-se conhecer a anatomia da traqueia da preguiça (Bradypus variegatus) a fim de fornecer informações para facilitar a eleição de tubo endotraqueal adequado, máscara laríngea ou cânula de traqueostomia para anestesia e procedimentos de emergência, uma vez que a mesma revelou-se possuidora de uma morfologia especial. Foram investigados 11animais jovens de idades diferentes, sendo quatro machos e sete fêmeas, provenientes do Museu Emilio Goeldi e doados a UFRA. Os exemplares foram perfundidos via intramuscular com solução aquosa de formol a 10% para fins de conservação e posteriormente foram dissecados em nível cervico-torácico, por meio de mesoscopia, expondo-se desde a laringe até os brônquios principais direito e esquerdo ao nível do hilo pulmonar. As traqueias foram divididas em cinco regiões (região cervical, região da primeira flexura, região da segunda flexura, região da terceira flexura e região da carina) as quais foram mensuradas altura e largura, assim como o comprimento traqueal total e parte do material foi submetido à técnicas de rotina histológica. Macroscopicamente, destacou-se a presença de sinuosidades acentuadas em porção médio caudal, contemplando a carina. O comprimento médio traqueal foi de 14,6cm. Microscopicamente, a traqueia era constituída por placas separadas de cartilagem hialina constituindo cada anel, sendo revestido por epitélio estratificado ciliado. Apesar da traqueia da preguiça comum apresentar revestimento padrão encontrado na traqueia de outros animais, na literatura não há registros de outras espécies que tenham morfologia macroscópica nas condições descritas, o que nos leva a sugerir, quando necessário acesso para ventilação de emergência, a prática da IOT e não a de traqueostomia.
