In this work we use a phenomenological theory of ferroelectric switching in BiFeO$_3$ thin films to uncover the mechanism of the two-step process that leads to the reversal of the weak magnetization of these materials. First, we introduce a realistic model of a BiFeO$_3$ film, including the Landau energy of isolated domains as well as the constraints that account for the presence of the substrate and the multidomain configuration found experimentally. We use this model to obtain statistical information about the switching behavior - by running dynamical simulations based on the Landau-Khalatnikov time-evolution equation, including thermal fluctuations - and we thus identify the factors that drive the two-step polarization reversal observed in the experiments. The first-principles-based effective Hamiltonian scheme provides one of the most accurate modeling technique for large-scale structures, especially for ferroelectrics. However, the parameterization of the effective Hamiltonian is complicated and can be difficult for some complex systems such as high-entropy perovskites. Here, we propose a general form of effective Hamiltonian and develop an active machine learning approach to parameterize the effective Hamiltonian based on Bayesian linear regression. The parameterization is employed in molecular dynamics simulations with the prediction of energy, forces, stress and their uncertainties at each step, which decides whether first-principles calculations are executed to retrain the parameters. Structures of BaTiO$_3$, Pb(Zr$_{0.75}$Ti$_{0.25}$)O$_3$ and (Pb,Sr)TiO$_3$ system are taken as examples to show the accuracy of this approach, as compared with conventional parametrization method and experiments. This machine learning approach provides a universal and automatic way to compute the effective Hamiltonian parameters for any considered complex systems with super-large-scale (more than $10^7$ atoms) atomic structures., Comment: 11 pages, 4 figures

A collective excitation of the spin structure in a magnetic insulator can transmit spin-angular momentum with negligible dissipation. This quantum of a spin wave, introduced more than nine decades ago, has always been manipulated through magnetic dipoles, (i.e., timereversal symmetry). Here, we report the experimental observation of chiral-spin transport in multiferroic BiFeO3, where the spin transport is controlled by reversing the ferroelectric polarization (i.e., spatial inversion symmetry). The ferroelectrically controlled magnons produce an unprecedented ratio of up to 18% rectification at room temperature. The spin torque that the magnons in BiFeO3 carry can be used to efficiently switch the magnetization of adja-cent magnets, with a spin-torque efficiency being comparable to the spin Hall effect in heavy metals. Utilizing such a controllable magnon generation and transmission in BiFeO3, an alloxide, energy-scalable logic is demonstrated composed of spin-orbit injection, detection, and magnetoelectric control. This observation opens a new chapter of multiferroic magnons and paves an alternative pathway towards low-dissipation nanoelectronics.

A continuum approach to study magnetoelectric multiferroic $\mathrm{BiFeO}_3$ (BFO) is proposed. Our modeling effort marries the ferroelectric (FE) phase field method and micromagnetic simulations in order to describe the entire multiferroic order parameter sector (polarization, oxygen antiphase tilts, strain, and magnetism) self-consistently on the same time and length scale. In this paper, we discuss our choice of ferroelectric and magnetic energy terms and demonstrate benchmarks against known behavior. We parameterize the lowest order couplings of the structural distortions against previous predictions from density functional theory calculations giving access to simulations of the FE domain wall (DW) topology. This allows us to estimate the energetic hierarchy and thicknesses of the numerous structural DWs. We then extend the model to the canted antiferromagnetic order and demonstrate how the ferroelectric domain boundaries influence the resulting magnetic DWs. We also highlight some capabilities of this model by providing two examples relevant for applications. We demonstrate spin wave transmission through the multiferroic domain boundaries which identify rectification in qualitative agreement with recent experimental observations. As a second example of application, we model fully-dynamical magnetoelectric switching, where we find a sensitivity on the Gilbert damping with respect to switching pathways. We envision that this modeling effort will set the basis for further work on properties of arbitrary 3D nanostructures of BFO (and related multiferroics) at the mesoscale., Comment: 15 pages (double column), 8 figures

We report second-principles simulations on the structural and energetic properties of domains in (PbTiO$_{3}$)$_{n}$/(SrTiO$_{3}$)$_{n}$ superlattices. For the explored layer thickness ($n$ ranging between 8 and 16 unit cells) and lateral sizes of the domains, the most stable configuration corresponds to polar domains separated by a sequence of counter-rotating vortices (clockwise/counterclockwise) perpendicular to the stacking direction and acting as domain walls. The balance between the domain wall energy and the electrostatic energy yields to an optimal domain period $\omega$ that is proportional to the square-root of the thickness of the PbTiO$_{3}$ layer, following the Kittel law. For a given lateral size of the simulation box, suboptimal domain structures (with a width larger than the one predicted by the Kittel law) can be obtained in a metastable form. However, at finite temperature, molecular dynamics simulations show the spontaneous change of periodicity, which implies the formation of new domains whose generation is initiated by the nucleation of vortices and antivortices at the interface between the SrTiO$_{3}$ and the PbTiO$_{3}$ layers. The vortices progressively elongate and eventually annihilate with the antivortices yielding the formation of new domains to comply the Kittel law via a topological phase transition., Comment: 7 pages, 6 Figures

Hafnia ferroelectrics combine technological promise and unprecedented behaviors. Their peculiarity stems from the many active extrinsic mechanisms that contribute to their properties and from a continuously growing number of novel intrinsic features. Partly because of their unconventional nature, basic questions about these materials remain open and one may wonder about the pertinence of some frequent theoretical assumptions. Aided by first-principles simulations, here we show that, by adopting an original high-symmetry reference phase as the starting point of the analysis, we can develop a mathematically simple and physically transparent treatment of the ferroelectric state of hafnia. The proposed approach describes hafnia as a uniaxial ferroic, as suggested by recent studies of (woken-up) samples with well developed polarization. Also, it is compatible with the occurrence of polar soft modes and proper ferroelectric order. Further, our theory provides a straightforward and unified description of all low-energy polymorphs, shedding light into old questions (e.g., the prevalence of the monoclinic ground state), pointing at exciting possibilities (e.g., an antiferroelastic behavior) and facilitating the future development of perturbative theories (from Landau to second-principles potentials). The wealth of complex polar topologies recently found in nanoscale ferroelectrics result from a delicate balance between the materials intrinsic tendency to develop a homogeneous polarization and the electric and mechanic boundary conditions imposed upon them. Ferroelectric dielectric interfaces are model systems where polarization curling originates from open circuit like electric boundary conditions, to avoid the build-up of polarization charges through the formation of flux closure domains that evolve into vortex like structures at the nanoscale. Interestingly, while ferroelectricity is known to couple strongly to strain (both homogeneous and inhomogeneous), the effect of mechanical constraints on thin film nanoscale ferroelectrics has been comparatively less explored because of the relative paucity of strain patterns that can be implemented experimentally. Here we show that the stacking of freestanding ferroelectric perovskite layers with controlled twist angles opens an unprecedented opportunity to tailor these topological nanostructures in a way determined by the lateral strain modulation associated to the twisting. Interestingly, we find that a peculiar pattern of polarization vortices and antivortices emerges from the flexoelectric coupling of polarization to strain gradients. This finding opens exciting opportunities to create two-dimensional high density vortex crystals that would allow us to explore novel physical effects and functionalities.

Understanding various aspects of ferroelectricity in hafnia-based nanomaterials is of vital importance for the development of future non-volatile memory and logic devices. Here, the unconventional and weak electromechanical response of epitaxial $La_{0.67}Sr_{0.33}MnO_{3}$/$Hf_{0.5}Zr_{0.5}O_{2}$/$La_{0.67}Sr_{0.33}MnO_{3}$ ferroelectric capacitors is investigated, via the sensitivity offered by nanobeam X-ray diffraction experiments during application of electrical bias. It is shown that the pristine rhombohedral phase exhibits a negative linear piezoelectric effect with piezoelectric coefficient ($d_{33}$) ~ -0.5 to -0.8 pm$V^{-1}$. First-principles calculations support an intrinsic negative piezoresponse. In addition, it is found that the piezoelectric response is suppressed above the coercive voltage. For higher voltages, and with the onset of DC conductivity throughout the capacitor, a second-order effect is observed. The electromechanical response observed in this work is clearly different from that of normal ferroelectrics, again underlining the unconventional nature of polarization switching in the samples.

Anomalous electrocaloric effect (ECE) with decreasing temperature upon application of an electric field is known to occur in antiferroelectrics (AFEs), and previous understanding refers to the field-induced canting of electric dipoles if there is no phase transitions. Here, we use a first-principle-based method to study the ECE in Nd-substituted BiFeO3 (BNFO) perovskite solid solutions, which has the Pnma-type AFE ground state. We demonstrate another scenario to achieve and explain anomalous ECE, emphasizing that explicit consideration of octahedral tiltings is indispensable for a correct understanding. This mechanism may be general for AFEs for which the antipolar mode is not the primary order parameter. We also find that the negative ECE can reach a large magnitude in BNFO.

In this work we introduce the simplest, lowest-order Landau-like potential for BiFeO$_3$ and La-doped BiFeO$_3$ as an expansion around the paraelectric cubic phase in powers of polarization, FeO$_6$ octahedral rotations and strains. We present an analytical approach for computing the model parameters from density functional theory. We illustrate our approach by computing the potentials for BiFeO$_3$ and La$_{0.25}$Bi$_{0.75}$FeO$_3$ and show that, overall, we are able to capture the first-principles results accurately. The computed models allow us to identify and explain the main interactions controlling the relative stability of the competing low-energy phases of these compounds., Comment: 12 pages, 6 figures

Ferroelectrics subject to suitable electric boundary conditions present a steady negative capacitance response. When the ferroelectric is in a heterostructure, this behavior yields a voltage amplification in the other elements, which experience a potential difference larger than the one applied, holding promise for low-power electronics. So far research has focused on verifying this effect and little is known about how to optimize it. Here we describe an electrostatic theory of ferroelectric/dielectric superlattices, convenient model systems, and show the relationship between the negative permittivity of the ferroelectric layers and the voltage amplification in the dielectric ones. Then, we run simulations of PbTiO3/SrTiO3 superlattices to reveal the factors most strongly affecting the amplification. In particular, we find that giant effects (up to 10-fold increases) can be obtained when PbTiO3 is brought close to the so-called "incipient ferroelectric" state.

The polarization response of antiferroelectrics to electric fields is such that the materials can store large energy densities, which makes them promising candidates for energy storage applications in pulsed-power technologies. However, relatively few materials of this kind are known. Here we consider ferroelectric/paraelectric superlattices as artificial electrostatically-engineered antiferroelectrics. Specifically, using high-throughput second-principles calculations, we engineer PbTiO$_{3}$/SrTiO$_{3}$ superlattices to optimize their energy-storage performance at room temperature (to maximize density and release efficiency) with respect to different design variables (layer thicknesses, epitaxial conditions, stiffness of the dielectric layer). We obtain results competitive with the state-of-the-art antiferroelectric capacitors and reveal the mechanisms responsible for the optimal properties., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures

The mechanocaloric effect is the temperature change of a material upon application or removal of an external stress. Beyond its fundamental interest, this caloric response represents a promising and ecofriendly alternative to current cooling technologies. To obtain large mechanocaloric effects, we need materials whose elastic properties (e.g., strain, elastic compliance) are strongly temperature dependent. This is the case of ferroelectric perovskite oxides, where the development of the spontaneous electric polarization is accompanied by significant strains and lattice softening. Thus, in this work we study the mechanocaloric properties of model ferroelectric PbTiO$_{3}$, by means of predictive atomistic ("second-principles") simulations and a perturbative formalism here introduced. Our calculations reveal relatively large effects (up to $-$4 K for relatively small applied compressions of $-$0.1 GPa) and several striking features. In particular, we find that the mechanocaloric response is highly anisotropic in the ferroelectric phase, as it can be either conventional (temperature increases upon compression) or inverse (temperature decreases) depending on the direction of the applied stress. We discuss and explain these surprising results, which compare well with existing experimental information. Our analysis suggests that the coexistence of conventional and inverse mechanocaloric responses is probably common among ferroelectrics and materials displaying a negative thermal expansion., Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures

Lead zirconate (PbZrO$_3$) is considered the prototypical antiferroelectric material with an antipolar ground state. Yet, several experimental and theoretical works hint at a partially polar behaviour in this compound, indicating that the polarization may not be completely compensated. In this work we propose a simple ferrielectric structure for lead zirconate. First-principles calculations reveal this state to be more stable than the commonly accepted antiferroelectric phase at low temperatures, possibly up to room temperature, suggesting that PbZrO$_3$ may not be antiferroelectric at ambient conditions. Because of its compatibility with semiconductor-based technologies, hafnia (HfO$_{2}$) is today's most promising ferroelectric material for applications in electronics. Yet, knowledge on the ferroic and electromechanical response properties of this all-important compound is still lacking. Interestingly, HfO$_2$ has recently been predicted to display a negative longitudinal piezoelectric effect, which sets it apart form classic ferroelectrics (e.g., perovskite oxides like PbTiO$_3$) and is reminiscent of the behavior of some organic compounds. The present work corroborates this behavior, by first-principles calculations and an experimental investigation of HfO$_2$ thin films using piezoresponse force microscopy. Further,the simulations show how the chemical coordination of the active oxygen atoms is responsible for the negative longitudinal piezoelectric effect. Building on these insights, it is predicted that, by controlling the environment of such active oxygens (e.g., by means of an epitaxial strain), it is possible to change the sign of the piezoelectric response of the material., Comment: 11 pages, 9 figures

We report a theoretical study of the non-linear magnetoelectric response of GdFeO$_3$ through an analytical approach combined with a Heisenberg model which is fitted against first-principles calculations. Our theory reproduces the non-linear change of polarization under applied magnetic field reported experimentally such that it allows to analyze the origin of the large responses in the different directions. We show that the non-linear character of the response in these materials originates from the fact that the antiferromagnetic order of Gd atoms changes non-linearly with respect to the applied magnetic field. Our model can be generalized to other materials in which the antiferromagnetic ordering breaks inversion symmetry.

An atomistic effective Hamiltonian is used to compute electrocaloric (EC) effects in rare-earth substituted BiFeO$_{3}$ multiferroics. A phenomenological model is then developed to interpret these computations, with this model indicating that the EC coefficient is the sum of two terms, that involve electric quantities (polarization, dielectric response), the antiferromagnetic order parameter, and the coupling between polarization and antiferromagnetic order. The first one depends on the polarization and dielectric susceptibility, has the analytical form previously demonstrated for ferroelectrics, and is thus enhanced at the ferroelectric Curie temperature. The second one explicitly involves the dielectric response, the magnetic order parameter and a specific magnetoelectric coupling, and generates a peak of the EC response at the N\'eel temperature. Spin reorientation and magnetisation reversal are two important features of the rare-earth orthorhombic provskites ($RM$O$_{3}$'s) that have attracted a lot of attention, though their exact microscopic origin has eluded researchers. Here, using density functional theory and classical atomistic spin dynamics we build a general Heisenberg magnetic model that allows to explore the whole phase diagram of the chromite and ferrite compounds and to scrutinize the microscopic mechanism responsible for spin reorientations and magnetisation reversals. We show that the occurrence of a magnetization reversal transition depends on the relative strength and sign of two interactions between rare-earth and transition-metal atoms: superexchange and Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya. We also conclude that the presence of a smooth spin reorientation transition between the so-called $\Gamma_4$ and the $\Gamma_2$ phases through a coexisting region, and the temperature range in which it occurs, depends on subtle balance of metal--metal (superexchange and Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya) and metal--rare-earth (Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya) couplings. In particular, we show that the intermediate coexistence region occurs because the spin sublattices rotate at different rates.

We show that the electrocaloric (EC) effect -- e.g., the temperature change experienced by an insulator upon application of an electric bias -- lends itself to a straightforward interpretation when expressed as a Taylor series in the external field. Our formalism explains in a unified and simple way the most notable small-field effects reported the literature -- e.g., the so-called {\em normal} (increase of temperature under bias, as usually found in ferroelectrics) and {\em inverse} (decrease of temperature, as e.g. in antiferroelectrics) EC responses -- and clarifies their physical interpretation. We also discuss in detail second-principles simulations for prototype ferroelectric PbTiO$_{3}$, explicitly evaluating subtle predictions of the theory, such as the occurrence of competing contributions to the EC response., Comment: 7 pages, 1 figure

Orbital angular momentum and torque transfer play central roles in a wide range of magnetic textures and devices including skyrmions and spin-torque electronics(1-4). Analogous topological structures are now also being explored in ferroelectrics, including polarization vortex arrays in ferroelectric/dielectric superlattices(5). Unlike magnetic toroidal order, electric toroidal order does not couple directly to linear external fields. To develop a mechanism that can control switching in polarization vortices, we utilize a high-energy electron beam and show that transverse currents are generated by polar order in the ballistic limit. We find that the presence of an electric toroidal moment in a ferro-rotational phase transfers a measurable torque and orbital angular momentum to the electron beam. Furthermore, we find that the complex polarization patterns, observed in these heterostructures, are microscopically chiral with a non-trivial axial component of the polarization. This chirality opens the door for the coupling of ferroelectric and optical properties.

Using first-principles calculations we predict that the layered-perovskite metal Bi$_5$Mn$_5$O$_{17}$ is a ferromagnet, ferroelectric, and ferrotoroid which may realize the long sought-after goal of a room-temperature ferromagnetic single-phase multiferroic with large, strongly coupled, primary-order polarization and magnetization. Bi$_5$Mn$_5$O$_{17}$ has two nearly energy-degenerate ground states with mutually orthogonal vector order parameters (polarization, magnetization, ferrotoroidicity), which can be rotated globally by switching between ground states. Giant cross-coupling magnetoelectric and magnetotoroidic effects, as well as optical non-reciprocity, are thus expected. Importantly, Bi$_5$Mn$_5$O$_{17}$ should be thermodynamically stable in O-rich growth conditions, and hence experimentally accessible., Comment: 7 pages, 7 figures

Antiferroelectrics have potential applications in energy conversion and storage, but are scarce, particularly among oxides that otherwise display rich ferroic behaviours. Are we overlooking potential antiferroelectrics, simply because we have not discovered their corresponding ferroelectric phase yet? Here we report a first-principles study suggesting this is the case of a family ABO$_3$ pyroxene-like materials, characterized by chains of corner-sharing BO$_4$ tetrahedra, a well-known member being KVO$_3$. The irregular tetrahedra have an electric dipole associated to them. In the most stable polymorph, the dipoles display an antipolar pattern with zero net moment. However, upon application of an electric field, half of the tetrahedra rotate, flipping the corresponding dipoles and reaching a ferroelectric state. We discuss the unique possibilities for tuning and optimization these antiferroelectrics offer. We argue that the structural features enabling this antiferroelectric behaviour are also present in other all-important mineral families., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures

Films of all-important compound hafnia (HfO2) can be prepared in an orthorhombic ferroelectric (FE) state that is ideal for applications, e.g. in memories or negative-capacitance field-effect transistors. The origin of this FE state remains a mystery, though, as none of the proposed mechanisms for its stabilization -- from surface and size effects to formation kinetics -- is fully convincing. Interestingly, it is known that doping HfO2 with various cations favors the occurrence of the FE polymorph; however, existing first-principles works suggest that doping by itself is not sufficient to stabilize the polar phase over the usual non-polar monoclinic ground state. Here we use first-principles methods to reexamine this question. We consider two representative isovalent substitutional dopants, Si and Zr, and study their preferred arrangement within the HfO2 lattice. Our results reveal that small atoms like Si can adopt very stable configurations (forming layers within specific crystallographic planes) in the FE orthorhombic phase of HfO2, but comparatively less so in the non-polar monoclinic one. Further, we find that, at low concentrations, such a dopant ordering yields a FE ground state, the usual paraelectric phase becoming a higher-energy metastable polymorph. We demonstrate theoretically how, by imposing epitaxial strain in a ferroelectric perovskite, it is possible to achieve a dynamical control of phonon propagation by means of external electric fields, which yields a giant electrophononic response, i.e. the dependence of the lattice thermal conductivity on external electric fields. Specifically, we study the strain-induced manipulation of the lattice structure and analyze its interplay with the electrophononic response. We show that tensile biaxial strain can drive the system to a regime where the electrical polarization can be effortlessly rotated and thus yield giant electrophononic responses that are at least one order of magnitude larger than in the unstrained system. These results derive directly from the almost divergent behavior of the electrical susceptibility at those critical strains that drive the polarization on the verge of a spontaneous rotation.

We present a theoretical proposal for the design of a thermal switch based on the anisotropy of the thermal conductivity of PbTiO3 and of the possibility to rotate the ferroelectric polarization with an external electric field. Our calculations are based on an iterative solution of the phonon Boltzmann Transport Equation and rely on interatomic force constants computed within an efficient second-principles density functional theory scheme. We also characterize the hysteresis cycle of the thermal conductivity in presence of an applied electric field and show that the response time would be limited by speed of the ferroelectric switch itself and thus can operate in the high-frequency regime., Comment: submitted to Appl. Model materials are precious test cases for elementary theories and provide building blocks for the understanding of more complex cases. Here, we describe the lattice dynamics of the structural phase transition in francisite Cu3Bi(SeO3)2O2Cl at 115 K and show that it provides a rare archetype of a transition driven by a soft antipolar phonon mode. In the high-symmetry phase at hightemperatures, the soft mode is found at (0,0,0.5) at the Brillouin zone boundary and is measured by inelastic X-ray scattering and thermal diffuse scattering. In the low-symmetry phase, this softmode is folded back onto the center of the Brillouin zone as a result of the doubling of the unit cell, and appears as a fully symmetric mode that can be tracked by Raman spectroscopy. On both sides of the transition, the mode energy squared follows a linear behaviour over a large temperature range. First-principles calculations reveal that, surprisingly, the flat phonon band calculated for the high-symmetry phase seems incompatible with the displacive character found experimentally. Bulk LiOsO3 was experimentally identified as a "ferroelectric" metal where polar distortions coexist with metallicity [Shi et al., Nature Materials 12, 1024 (2013)]. It is generally believed that polar displacements in a "ferroelectric" metal cannot be switched by an external electric field. Here, via comprehensive density functional theory calculations, we demonstrate that a two-unit-cell-thick LiOsO3 thin film exhibits a ferroelectric ground state having an out-of-plane electric dipole moment that can be switched by an external electric field. Moreover, its dipole moment-versus-electric-field hysteresis loop is asymmetric because only surface Li ions'displacements are reversed by external electric field whereas the field-induced force on inner Li atoms are nearly fully screened by itinerant electrons. As a relevant by-product of our study, we also extend the concept of "Born effective charge" to finite metallic systems, and show its usefulness to rationalize the observed effects., Comment: 13 pages, 4 figures

We present an ab initio simulation of $90^{\circ}$ ferroelastic twins that were recently observed in methyl ammonium lead iodide. There are two inequivalent types of $90^{\circ}$ walls that we calculate to act as either electron or hole sinks which suggests a possible route to enhancing charge carrier separation in photovoltaic devices. Despite separating non-polar domains, we show these walls to have a substantial in-plane polarisation of $\sim 6 \phantom{|} \mu \text{C}\phantom{|}\text{cm}^{-2}$, due in part to flexoelectricity. We suggest this in turn could allow for the photoferroic effect and create efficient pathways for photocurrents within the wall.

Refrigeration systems based on compression of greenhouse gases are environmentally threatening and cannot be scaled down to on-chip dimensions. In the vicinity of a phase transition caloric materials present large thermal responses to external fields, which makes them promising for developing alternative solid-state cooling devices. Electrocaloric effects are particularly well-suited for portable refrigeration applications; however, most electrocaloric materials operate best at non-ambient temperatures or require the application of large electric fields. Here, we predict that modest electric fields can yield giant room-temperature electrocaloric effects in multiferroic BiCoO$_{3}$ (BCO) thin films. Depending on the orientation of the applied field the resulting electrocaloric effect is either direct (heating) or inverse (cooling), which may enable the design of enhanced refrigeration cycles. We show that spin-phonon couplings and phase competition are the underlying causes of the disclosed caloric phenomena. The dual electrocaloric response of BCO thin films can be effectively tuned by means of epitaxial strain and we anticipate that other control strategies like chemical substitution are also possible.

Magnetic skyrmions are mesmerizing spin textures with peculiar topological and dynamical properties, typically the product of competing interactions in ferromagnets, and with great technological potential [1-5]. Researchers have long wondered whether analogous electric skyrmions might exist in ferroelectrics, maybe featuring novel behaviors and possibilities for electric and mechanical control. The results thus far are modest, though: an electric equivalent of the most typical magnetic skyrmion (which would rely on a counterpart of the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction) seems all but impossible; further, the exotic ferroelectric orders observed or predicted to date [6-8] rely on very specific nano-structures (composites, superlattices), which limits the generality and properties (e.g., mobility) of the possible associated skyrmions. Here we propose an original approach to write electric skyrmions in simple ferroelectric lattices in a customary manner. Our second-principles simulations [9] of columnar ferroelectric nano-domains, in prototype compound PbTiO3 , show that it is possible to harness the Bloch-type internal structure of the domain wall [10] and hence create a genuine skyrmion. We check that the object thus obtained displays the usual skyrmion-defining features; further, it also presents unusual ones, including a symmetry-breaking skyrmion-skyrmion transition driven by strain, various types of topological transformations induced by external fields and temperature, and potentially very small sizes. Our results suggest countless possibilities for creating and manipulating electric textures with non-trivial topologies, using standard experimental tools and materials, effectively inaugurating the field of electric skyrmions., Comment: 5 pages and 3 figures

Under normal conditions, bulk crystals of BiScO$_3$ , BiCrO$_3$, BiMnO$_3$, BiFeO$_3$, and BiCoO$_3$ present three very different variations of the perovskite structure: an antipolar phase, a rhombohedral phase with a large polarization along the space diagonal of the pseudocubic unit cell, and a supertetragonal phase with even larger polarization. With the aim of understanding the causes for this variety, we have used a genetic algorithm to search for minima in the surface energy of these materials. Our results show that the number of these minima is very large when compared to that of typical ferroelectric perovskites like BaTiO$_3$ and PbTiO$_3$ , and that a fine energy balance between them results in the large structural differences seen. As byproducts of our search we have identified charge-ordering structures with low energy in BiMnO$_3$ , and several phases with energies that are similar to that of the ground state of BiCrO$_3$. We have also found that a inverse supertetragonal phase exists in bulk, likely to be favored in films epitaxially grown at large values of tensile misfit strain.

Ferroelectric materials are characterized by a spontaneous polar distortion. The behavior of such distortions in the presence of free charge is the key to the physics of metallized ferroelectrics in particular, and of structurally-polar metals more generally. Using first-principles simulations, here we show that a polar distortion resists metallization and the attendant suppression of long-range dipolar interactions in the vast majority of a sample of 11 representative ferroelectrics. We identify a meta-screening effect, occurring in the doped compounds as a consequence of the charge rearrangements associated to electrostatic screening, as the main factor determining the survival of a non-centrosymmetric phase. Our findings advance greatly our understanding of the essentials of structurally-polar metals, and offer guidelines on the behavior of ferroelectrics upon field-effect charge injection or proximity to conductive device elements., Comment: 13 pages, 9 figures

An atomistic effective Hamiltonian is used to investigate electrocaloric (EC) effects of Pb(Mg$_{1/3}$Nb$_{2/3}$)O$_{3}$ (PMN) relaxor ferroelectrics in its ergodic regime, and subject to electric fields applied along the pseudocubic [111] direction. Such Hamiltonian qualitatively reproduces (i) the electric field-versus-temperature phase diagram, including the existence of a critical point where first-order and second-order transitions meet each other; and (ii) a giant EC response near such critical point. It also reveals that such giant response around this critical point is microscopically induced by field-induced percolation of polar nanoregions. Moreover, it is also found that, for any temperature above the critical point, the EC coefficient-versus-electric field curve adopts a maximum (and thus larger electrocaloric response too), that can be well described by the general Landau-like model proposed in [Jiang et al, Phys. Rev. B 96, 014114 (2017)] and that is further correlated with specific microscopic features related to dipoles lying along different rhombohedral directions. Furthermore, for temperatures being at least 40 K higher than the critical temperature, the (electric field, temperature) line associated with this maximal EC coefficient is below both the Widom line and the line representing percolation of polar nanoregions., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures

We use first-principles methods to study oxygen-octahedra rotations in ABO3 perovskite oxides. We focus on the short-period, perfectly antiphase or in-phase, tilt patterns that characterize most compounds and control their physical (e.g., conductive, magnetic) properties. Based on an analytical form of the relevant potential energy surface, we discuss the conditions for the stability of polymorphs presenting different tilt patterns, and obtain numerical results for a collection of thirty-five representative materials. Our results reveal the mechanisms responsible for the frequent occurrence of a particular structure that combines antiphase and in-phase rotations, i.e., the orthorhombic Pbnm phase displayed by about half of all perovskite oxides and by many non-oxidic perovskites. The Pbnm phase benefits from the simultaneous occurrence of antiphase and in-phase tilt patterns that compete with each other, but not as strongly as to be mutually exclusive. We also find that secondary antipolar modes, involving the A cations, contribute to weaken the competition between different tilts and play a key role in their coexistence. Our results thus confirm and better explain previous observations for particular compounds. Interestingly, we also find that strain effects, which are known to be a major factor governing phase competition in related (e.g., ferroelectric) perovskite oxides, play no essential role as regards the relative stability of different rotational polymorphs. Further, we discuss why the Pbnm structure stops being the ground state in two opposite limits, for large and small A cations, showing that very different effects become relevant in each case. Our work thus provides a comprehensive discussion on these all-important and abundant materials, which will be useful to better understand existing compounds as well as to identify new strategies for materials engineering.

After decades of searching for robust nanoscale ferroelectricity that could enable integration into the next generation memory and logic devices, hafnia-based thin films have appeared as the ultimate candidate because their ferroelectric (FE) polarization becomes more robust as the size is reduced. This exposes a new kind of ferroelectricity, whose mechanism still needs to be understood. Towards this end, thin films with increased crystal quality are needed. We report the epitaxial growth of Hf0.5Zr0.5O2 (HZO) thin films on (001)-oriented La0.7Sr0.3MnO3/SrTiO3 (STO) substrates. The films, which are under epitaxial compressive strain and are predominantly (111)-oriented, display large FE polarization values up to 34 {\mu}C/cm2 and do not need wake-up cycling. Structural characterization reveals a rhombohedral phase, different from the commonly reported polar orthorhombic phase. This unexpected finding allows us to propose a compelling model for the formation of the FE phase. In addition, these results point towards nanoparticles of simple oxides as a vastly unexplored class of nanoscale ferroelectrics.

The structure of ABO3 perovskites is dominated by two types of unstable modes, namely, the oxygen octahedral rotation (AFD) and ferroelectric (FE) mode. It is generally believed that such AFD and FE modes tend to compete and suppress each other. Here we use first-principles methods to show that a dual nature of the AFD-FE coupling, which turns from competitive to cooperative as the AFD mode strengthens, occurs in numerous perovskite oxides. We provide a unified model of such a dual interaction by introducing novel high-order coupling terms, and explain the atomistic origin of the resulting new form of ferroelectricity in terms of universal steric mechanisms. We also predict that such a novel form of ferroelectricity leads to atypical behaviors, such as an enhancement of the electric polarization under hydrostatic pressure.
