Introduction: Chemo-therapeutic drugs can cause morphological damages to the salivary glands. Objectives: This study aimed to analyze and elucidate 5-fluorouracil (5-FU), cisplatin, methotrexate (MTX), and adriamycin (ADR)-induced morphological changes on submandibular glands (SMGs) of the rats. Material and methods: Forty male Wistar albino rats were divided into five groups, with 8 rats per group. In the control group, 1 ml/kg 0.9% sterile saline solution; in the second group, 100 mg/kg dose of 5-FU; in the third group, 5 mg/kg dose of cisplatin; in the fourth group, 15 mg/kg dose of MTX; in the fifth group, 15 mg/kg dose of ADR were injected once a day for three consecutive days intra-peritoneally. In all groups, SMGs were excised, histopathological analyses were done using a light microscope, and total protein content was analyzed according to Lowry method. Data were examined using analysis of variance (ANOVA), Tukey HSD, Kruskal-Wallis, and Dunn’s tests. Results were evaluated at 95% confidence interval and significance level of p < 0.05. Results: There was a statistically significant decrease in gland weight and total protein content of the 5-FU, ADR, and cisplatin groups compared to that of the control (p < 0.001). However, the decrease in gland weight and total protein content of MTX group was not statistically significant (p > 0.05). Acinus areas of 5-FU, ADR, cisplatin, and MTX groups were lower than that of the control significantly (p < 0.001). Conclusions: According to morphological parameters of our study, the most toxic effects were found to be caused by 5-FU, followed by ADR and cisplatin, while MTX presented the least toxic effects on the rats’ SMGs.

Background: Le Fort 1 (LF1) osteotomies are widely used to correct midface deformities. To move the maxilla freely, the ptery-gomaxillary junction (PMJ) must be separated. When performing this osteotomy, the pterygoid plate must remain intact. The objective of this study was to evaluate relationship between the anatomical features of the PMJ and fracture patterns in LF1 osteotomy. Methods: Pre-operative and post-operative cone-beam computed tomography images of 41 patients (82 samples) who have undergone LF1 osteotomy surgery were radiologically evaluated. Morphologic measurements of the pterygomaxillary fissure area and pterygoid plate were carried out. Moreover, pterygomaxillary separation was divided into the clean-cut, maxillary sinus, and pterygoid plate fracture types. Results: Statistically significant difference was observed between clean-type fracture and pterygoid plate fracture groups' thickness of the pterygoid process and thickness of the pterygomaxillary region. Conclusion: Anatomical variations make it difficult to separate the PMJ properly. Low thickness of PMJ increases the risk of unwanted fractures; however, according to our experience, the use of an osteotome with an incorrect angle, excessive force, and inexperienced surgeons can also cause undesirable pterygoid plate fractures.

Amaç: Çalışmanın amacı sfenoid sinüste görülen hipoplazi ve agenezi varlığı ve sıklığının konik ışınlı bilgisayarlı tomografi ile değerlendirilmesidir. Yöntem: Kliniğimizde Aralık 2015-Ocak 2018 tarihleri arasında alınan ve sfenoid sinüsün görüntüleme alanına girdiği konik ışınlı bilgisayarlı tomografi görüntüleri retrospektif olarak taranmıştır. 18-86 yaş aralığındaki 131 kadın ve 119 erkek olmak üzere toplam 250 hastaya ait görüntüler çalışmaya dahil edilmiştir.Bulgular: Sağ sfenoid sinüs hipoplazisi 17 hastada (%6,8), sol sfenoid sinüs hipoplazisi de 17 hastada (%6,8) görülmüştür. Sfenoid sinüs agenezisi ise 2 hastada (%0,8) tespit edilmiştir. Sfenoid sinüs hipoplazisi ve agenezisi ile cinsiyet arasında istatistiksel olarak anlamlı bir ilişki bulunamamıştır.Sonuç: Transnazal-transsfenoidal hipofizektomi operasyonlarının planlanmasında sfenoid sinüsün varyasyonlarının 3 boyutlu olarak değerlendirilmesi önemli olup ameliyat öncesi kemik yapıdaki anatomik varyasyonların değerlendirilmesinde bilgisayarlı tomografi ve konik ışınlı bilgisayarlı tomografi kullanımı tavsiye edilmektedir., Objective: The aim of the study is to evaluate the presence and frequency of sphenoid sinus hypoplasia and agenesis by using cone-beam computed tomography.Methods: The cone-beam computed tomography images of our clinic taken between December 2015-January 2018 were retrospectively scanned, and the images where the field of view involved the sphenoid sinus were included in the study. The images of 250 patients including 131 females and 119 males between the ages of 18-86 were included in the study. Results: Right sphenoid sinus hypoplasia was seen in 17 patients (6.8%) and left sphenoid sinus hypoplasia was seen in 17 patients (6.8%). Sphenoid sinus agenesis was detected in 2 patients (0.8%). No statistically significant relationship was found between sphenoid sinus hypoplasia and agenesis, and gender.Conclusion: Three-dimensional evaluation of the variations of the sphenoid sinus is important for transnasal - transsphenoidal hypophysectomy operations. In this regard, the use of computed tomography and cone beam computed tomography is recommended.

Amaç: Osteonekroz kavramı, intravenöz bisfosfonatlarla tedavi edilen hastaların maksillofasiyal bölgelerinde iyileşmeyen ve açığa çıkmış nekrotik kemik ile karakterize bir durum olarak ilk kez 2003 yılında tanımlanmıştır. Multiplmyelom, kemik metastazları, osteoporoz ve paget hastalığı gibi birçok hastalığın tedavisinde kullanılan bisfosfonatlar, kemik rezorpsiyonunu inhibe eder. Bisfosfonat gibi antirezorptif ilaçlarla tedavi edilen hastalarda oral kontroller ve tedaviler önemli olup tıp ve diş hekimlerinin söz konusu hastalarda dental risk faktörlerinin değerlendirilmesi konusunda iş birliği sağlamaları gerekmektedir. Çalışmamızın amacı, diş hekimliği öğrencilerinin ilaç kullanımına bağlı osteonekroz hakkındaki bilgi düzeyleri ve farkındalığını ölçmektir. Gereç ve Yöntemler: Çalışmamıza üniversitemizin diş hekimliği fakültesinde eğitim gören 4. ve 5. sınıf öğrencilerinden toplam 188 kişi dahil edilmiştir. Anket soruları, demografik bilgiler (yaş ve cinsiyet vb.), bisfosfonat ve osteonekroz ile ilgili bilgiler (ilacın kullanıldığı hastalıklar, osteonekroza neden olabilecek diğer ilaçlar vb.) ve örnek vaka üzerinden osteonekroz hastalarına ve bu hastalardaki dental tedavi yaklaşıma ilişkin sorulardan oluşmaktadır. Alınan cevaplar istatistiksel olarak değerlendirilmiştir. Bulgular: Ankete yaş ortalamaları 21,96±0,995 olan 4.sınıflardan 114 öğrenci(81 kadın (%71.10); 33 erkek (%28.90)) ve yaş ortalamaları 22,99±0,972 olan 5.sınıflardan 74 öğrenci (51 kadın (%68.90); 23 erkek (%31.10)) olmak üzere toplam 188 öğrenci dahil olmuştur. Sonuç: Çalışmamızdan elde ettiğimiz bulgulara dayanarak verilen eğitimin müfredatlarında bu konuyla ilgili güncellemelerin yapılması önerilmektedir., Aim: The concept of osteonecrosis was first defined in 2003 as a condition characterized by unhealed and exposed necrotic bone in the maxillofacial regions of patients treated with intravenous bisphosphonates. Bisphosphonates used in the treatment of many diseases such as multiple myeloma, bone metastases, osteoporosis and paget's disease inhibit bone resorption. Oral controls and treatments are important in patients treated with antiresorptive drugs such as bisphosphonates, and medical and dentists need to cooperate in evaluating dental risk factors in these patients. The aim of our study is to measure the knowledge and awareness of dentistry students about drug-induced osteonecrosis.Material and Methods: A total of 188 students from 4th and 5th grade studying at the Faculty of Dentistry of our university were included in our study. Questionnaire questions consist of demographic information (age and gender, etc.), information about bisphosphonates and osteonecrosis (diseases where the drug is used, other drugs that may cause osteonecrosis, etc.) and questions about osteonecrosis patients and the dental treatment approach in these patients. The answers received were evaluated statistically.Results: 114 students (81 females (71.10%); 33 males (28.90%)) from 4th grades with a mean age of 21.96 ± 0.995 and 74 students from 5th grades (51 females (%) with a mean age of 22.99 ± 0.972. 68.90); 23 male (31.10%)), a total of 188 students were included.Conclusion: Based on the findings of our study, it is recommended to update the curricula of the education provided on this subject.

Amaç: Rinolitler nazal kavitede endojen ve eksojen nidusların kalsifikasyonları ile oluşan mineralize olmuş, sert, yoğun ve düzensiz odaklardır. Genellikle asemptomatik olan rinolitler nadir olarak görülmektedir. Bu çalışmada, Konik Işınlı Bilgisayarlı Tomografi (KIBT) görüntülerinde rinolitlerin görülme sıklığının, lokalizasyonlarının ve karakteristik özellikle-rinin değerlendirilmesi amaçlanmıştır.Gereç ve Yöntem: İstanbul Üniversitesi Diş Hekimliği Fakültesi Ağız, Diş ve Çene Rady-olojisi Anabilim Dalı’nda 01.01.2017 ile 01.07.2019 tarihleri arasında alınan KIBT görüntüleri değerlendirilmiştir. Nazal kaviteyi içermeyen ve hareket artefaktı bulunan görüntüler çalışma dışında tutulmuştur. 8380 KIBT görüntüsü taranmış olup uygun kriter-lerde bulunan 3124 görüntü çalışmaya dahil edilmiştir. Görüntüler 2 uzman 2 araştırma görevlisi tarafından değerlendirilmiştir.Bulgular: Çalışma kriterlerine uygun 3124 KIBT görüntüsü değerlendirilmiş olup 7 adet rinolit olgusu tespit edilmiştir. 5 rinolit olgusu sağ nazal kavitede, 2 rinolit olgusu sol nazal kavitede izlenmiştir. 5 rinolit olgusu inferior nazal konkada görülürken 1 olgu orta nazal konkada, 1 olgu da hem orta hem de inferior nazal konkada izlenmiştir. Olguların birinde nazal kavite tabanında perforasyon, bir diğerinde nazal septum deviasyonu tespit edilmiştir.Sonuç: Dental teşhis ve tedaviler sırasında alınan KIBT görüntülerinde rinolitler tesadüfen gözlenebilir. Bu olgular geç teşhis edildiğinde veya tedavi edilmediğinde septal veya antral perforasyon, nazal septum deviasyonu gibi semptomlara neden olabileceği bilinmektedir. Rinolitlerin lokalizasyonunun belirlenmesinde, karakteristiğinin tespitinde ve tedavi plan-lamasında KIBT önemli bir yer tutmaktadır., Aim: Rhinoliths are mineralized, hard, dense and irregular foci formed by the calcification of endogenous and exogenous nidus in the nasal cavity. This condition is rarely seen and usually asymptomatic. In this study, it is aimed to evaluate the frequency, localization and characteristic features of rhinoliths in Cone-Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) images.Materials and Method: The CBCT images taken between 01.01.2017 and 01.07.2019 at the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology of Istanbul University Faculty of Dentistry were evaluated. The images with motion artefact and images without a nasal cavity were excluded from the study. 8380 CBCT images were scanned and 3124 images that comply with the criteria were included in the study. Images were evaluated by 2 experts and 2 re-search assistants.Results: 3124 CBCT images matching the study criteria were evaluated and 7 rhinolith cas-es were identified. 5 cases of rhinolith were located at the right side of the nasal cavity whereas 2 others were at the left side of the nasal cavity. 5 rhinolith cases were observed at the inferior nasal concha, 1 case was seen at the middle nasal concha and the last one was seen both at the inferior and the middle nasal concha. One case included perforation of the nasal cavity base whereas the other had nasal septum deviation.Conclusion: Rhinoliths can be observed incidentally on CBCT images taken during dental diagnosis and treatment. In case of late diagnosis or when they are not treated properly, these cases are known to cause symptoms such as septal or antral perforation, nasal sep-tum deviation. CBCT is crucial for determining the localization, characterization and treatment planning of rhinoliths.

Amaç: Konka pnömatizasyonu konka bülloza olarak adlandırılmakla birlikte sıklıkla orta nazal konkada görülen bir varyasyondur. Konka bülloza, kronik sinüzite neden olan faktörler arasında yer almaktadır. Bu çalışmanın amacı konka bülloza sıklığını ve maksiller sinüzit ile ilişkisini araştırmaktır.Gereç ve Yöntem: Bu retrospektif çalışma, 2016-2018 yılları arasında İstanbul Üniversitesi Diş Hekimliği Fakültesi Ağız, Diş ve Çene Radyolojisi Anabilim Dalı’na başvuran ve farklı dental şikayetler nedeniyle konik ışınlı bilgisayarlı tomografi çektiren 621 hastanın görüntüleri değerlendirilerek yapılmıştır.Bulgular: Konka bülloza 621 hastanın 413’ünde (%66,5) görülmüş olup bunların %43,58’inde unilateral, %56,41’inde ise bilateral olarak izlenmiştir. Sol konka büllozanın cinsiyet ile ilişkisi değerlendirildiğinde istatistiksel olarak anlamlı bir fark bulunmuştur (p=0.08) (Kadın erkek oranı 1.14:1). Maksiller sinüzit görülen hastaların sağ tarafta %51,71’inde, sol tarafta %49,14’ünde konka bülloza tespit edilmiş olup maksiller sinüzit ile konka bülloza arasında istatistiksel olarak anlamlı fark bulunamamıştır (p>0.05).Sonuç: Patolojik bulgularla ilişkili olabilen anatomik varyasyonların tespiti doğru tanı için önemlidir. Konka büllozanın kronik sinüzitle ilişkisinde rol oynayabilecek diğer faktörlerin de araştırılması gerekmektedir., Aim: Although concha pneumatization is called concha bullosa, it is a variation often seen in the middle nasal concha. Concha bullosa is among the factors causing chronic sinusitis. The aim of this study is to evaluate the frequency of concha bullosa and its relationship with the maxillary sinusitis. Material and Method: This retrospective study was carried out by evaluating the images of 621 patients who applied to the Department of Oral, Dental and Maxillofacial Radiology at Istanbul University, Faculty of Dentistry between 2016-2018 and had cone beam computed tomography due to different dental complaints. Results: Concha bullosa was seen in 413 (66.5%) out of 621 patients, of whom 43.58% were unilateral, and 56.41% were bilateral. When the relationship of left concha bullosa with gender was evaluated, a statistically significant difference was found (p=0.08) (Female to male ratio 1.14: 1). Among the patients with maxillary sinusitis, concha bullosa was detected on the right side in 51.71% of the patients and on the left side in 49.14%, and there was no statistically significant difference between maxillary sinusitis and concha bullosa (p> 0.05). Conclusion: Detection of anatomical variations that may be associated with pathological findings is important for correct diagnosis. Other factors that may play a role in the relationship between concha bullosa and chronic sinusitis should be investigated.

Amaç: Diş yaşı (DY) tayini yöntemlerinin geçerliliği farklı popülasyonlarda test edilmektedir. Bu çalışmanın amacı İstanbul’da yaşayan Türk çocukların DY tayininde Demirjian (D) ve Haavikko (H) yöntemlerinin karşılaştırmalı olarak incelenmesidir. Yöntem: Etik onayı alındıktan sonra, çalışma kapsamında İstanbul Üniversitesi Diş Hekimliği Fakültesi Oral Diagnoz ve Radyoloji Anabilim Dalı arşivindeki 8-14 yaş grubu çocuklara ait panoramik radyografiler dahil edilme kriterlerine göre seçilerek retrospektif olarak incelenmiştir. Bireylerin kronolojik yaşları (KY), panoramik röntgenin alındığı tarihten doğum tarihlerinin çıkarılması ile hesaplanmıştır. Her bir çocuğun DY’si D ve H yöntemlerinin her ikisi ile de belirlenmiştir. DY ve KY arasındaki farkın ve mutlak farkın %95 düzeyinde güven aralıkları verilmiştir. The aim of this study is to compare the Demirjian (D) and Haavikko (H) methods in Turkish children.Methods: After obtaining ethical approval, panoramic radiographs of 8-14 year-old children in the archives of Department of Oral Diagnosis and Radiology were selected analyzed retrospectively.
