3. Age estimation using mandibular dimensions: a preliminary study

Abstract

Age estimation alongside determination of sex, height, andancestry is of utmost importance for an accurate identification ofthe victim in forensic cases. On the other hand, reliable ageestimation in living individuals is of significance in both judicialand ethical terms, especially with regard to the evaluation ofcriminal liability, and is becoming increasingly important as aresult of rapid increase in immigration movements in the globalscale. Most studies related to age estimation so far haveinvestigated degenerations or developmental process of eithertooth or skeletal system. Our aim in this preliminary study is tocalculate regression equations to be used in age estimation usingmandible size in children aged 18 or below and to evaluate itsreliability. We evaluated 140 cephalometric images from patientswith skeletal Class I closure. All images were obtained from thearchive of Başkent University, Faculty of Dentistry, Department ofOrthodontics. In every image, seven anthropometric measurements were performed: gonion-menton (Go-Me), gonion-gnathion,(Go-Gn) condylion-gonion (Co-Go), condylion-gnathion (Co-Gn),gonial angle, SNA, SNB, and ANB. The last three parameters wereused to determine whether the skeletal development of maxillaand mandible were within normal limits, and not included inequations for age estimation. 10. Interactive educational experiences at Atılım University, Department of Anatomy.

Abstract

Objective: Interactive methods are applied in Anatomy theoretical education in addition to face-to-face education (FFE). Interactive methods applied at Atılım University Faculty of Medicine; flipped class (FC), team-based learning (TBL), problem-based learning, case discussion. The student is expected to study according to resources given prior to the application and be prepared for quiz to be held during class time in FC. After quiz, questions are discussed with students and topic is briefly reviewed. Students are provided resources enriched with visuals in advance so they can work in TBL. First, a quiz is administered. Then, they are randomly divided into groups of 10 and questions are discussed with groups, lecturer summarizes topic and case presentation. We aimed to evaluate effectiveness of FC, TBL and FFE models in Anatomy education for students. Methods: Term 2 students of 2023-2024 academic year were included in the study. Three surveys, each consisting of 9 questions, were administered to students about FC, TBL and FFE theoretical lessons, applied in anatomy courses during Neuroscience Committee. In addition, students' anatomy marks in relevant exams was evaluated. Results: The success averages of quizzes held in FC, TBL and FFE is evaluated are 90.72%, 60.38%, 53.4%, respectively. As survey results were examined, it was stated that interactive education was more interesting, effective in terms of making the subjects more memorable for students than FFE. Conclusion: Being restrictive factors in the study, we believe that integration of interactive learning models with FFE in Anatomy education, particular attention to topic selection, would make lessons more effective. 12. The association between hand dimensions and handgrip strength: a preliminary study

Abstract

Grip strength of the hand is defined as the voluntary flexion of allfingers in maximum strength under normal bio-kinetic circumstances. Handgrip strength is an important parameter in terms ofthe efficient use of the hand in addition to being a reliablemarker of the physical strength of the individual. The aim of thisstudy was to evaluate the association between theanthropometric measurements of the hand and handgrip strength.A total of 150 students from Baskent University aged 18 to 25years participated in this study. The participants’ height, weight,length of upper extremity, arm, forearm and hand, armcircumference, wrist circumference, elbow and wrist width andhand width were measured in this study. In addition, the distancefrom the distal wrist line to the distal end of each finger and thedistances from each fingertip to the peak point of the thumbwere measured with the fingers in abduction. The measurementsfor the fingers were obtained from scanned images of the hands.Handgrip strength, however, was measured using a handdynamometer. The handgrip strength of the males was found tobe greater compared to the females. A statistically significantassociation between handgrip strength and all upper extremityparameters was found. The most significant of all the parameterswas the distance between the wrist and thumb of the right andleft hand (WT). This study is a preliminary one and may be seenin terms of treatment approaches to the hand, clinical follow-up,and hand rehabilitation.

19. Sıçan tendo calcaneus'unda yaşa bağlı değişikliklerin morfometrik, immunohistokimyasal ve ince yapı düzeyinde incelenmesi

Abstract

Aşil tendonu insan vücudundaki en güçlü tendon olmasına rağmen; fazla kullanıma, yaşa, mekanik etkilere, çeşitli sistemik hastalıklara ve dışarıdan alınan çeşitli ilaçlara bağlı olarak yırtılma riski en yüksek olan tendondur. Yaş, diğer tendonlara oranla aşil tendonu lezyonlarında önemli bir hazırlayıcı faktördür. Bu nedenle tendon yaşlanması üzerine birçok çalışma yapılmıştır. Bu çalışmada sağlam sıçan aşil tendonundaki yaşa bağlı oluşan değişikliklerin, herhangi bir etyolojik faktör olmaksızın morfolojik, ince yapı düzeyinde ve immunohistokimyasal olarak incelenmesi amaçlanmıştır. Prepubertal (2-3 haftalık), ergin (6-7 aylık) ve geç ergin (1 yaş) gruplarının her birinden onar adet olmak üzere toplam 30 adet Wistar Albino cinsi dişi sıçan kullanıldı. Genel anestezi altında her iki aşil tendonları alınan sıçanlara daha sonra ötenazi uygulandı. Pikrik asit-sirius kırmızısı ışık mikroskobik incelemesinde, yaşın artmasıyla yoğun kırmızı renkte boyanan kollajen liflerin ondulasyonunda azalma, tenosit çekirdeklerinde yuvarlaklaşma, ara madde ve kan damarı artışı, tenosit sayısında istatistiksel olarak da anlamlı azalma olduğu görülmüştür. İmmunohistokimyasal olarak kollajen tip I ve TGF ß ve S-100 antikor tutulumları, yaşla belirgin artış gösterirken FGF-1 tutulumunun ergin yaş grubunda diğer yaş gruplarından biraz daha fazla olduğu izlenmiştir. Elektron mikroskobik olarak artan yaşla tenositlerin aktivitesinde azalma, kollajen sentezinde azalma, GER'de salgı materyali birikimi ve sitoplazmada lipid birikimi artarken çekirdeklerin de yuvarlaklaştığı görülmüştür.Ergin yaş grubunda başlayan dejeneratif değişiklikler, fonksiyonel olarak tendonun esnekliğinin azalmasıyla lezyonlara neden olabileceğini düşündürmektedir. In human body, achilles tendon is the strongest but also most common ruptured tendon due to age, overuse, mechanical factors, systemic diseases and drugs. Its biomechanical structure has been investigated by several researcher in rat and rabbit. Age is regarded as an important prediposing factor in lesions of achilles tendon. The aim of this study was to determine the age related morphometric, immunohistochemical and ultrastructural changes in intact rat achilles tendon. Prepubertal (2-3 weeks), adult (6-7months) and late adult (1 year old) 30 Wistar albino rats were used. Achilles tendons were dissected under general anesthesia and then sacrifized. Picric acid- sirius red light microscobic staining red stained collagen fibers decrease curl (decreased waviness), more rounded appearence of tenocyte nuclei, extracellular matrix and vascularity increase, the number of tenocytes statistically decrease were found. Immunohistochemically collagen tip I, TGF ß and S-100 antibody immonoreactivity increase with age. There was an increase FGF-1 immunoreactivity in adult group according to the other groups. Ultrastructural changes with age were the decrease activity of tenocytes, decrease synthesis of collagen, accumulation of secretion materialin GER and cytoplasmic lipid drops and rounded appearence of nuclei.The dejenerative changes begin in adult age group decrease the elasticity of tendon functionally. These might also explain the increased risk of rupture in certain age group of animal. 101

26. Prevalence of Chiari type I malformation on cervical magnetic resonance imaging: a retrospective study.

Abstract

Objectives: Chiari malformation is characterized by caudal herniation of cerebellar tonsils from foramen magnum into the cervical canal on radiological images. Type I Chiari malformation is the herniation of cerebellar tonsils more than 3 mm which does not cause any symptoms until adulthood. In this study, we aimed to investigate the prevalence of Chiari type I malformation. Methods: In this retrospective study, cervical magnetic resonance images taken between 2013 and 2015 were retrospectively analyzed. The patients were 18-70 year old males and females. Type I Chiari malformation was defined as an inferior displacement of the cerebellar tonsils more than 3 mm below the opisthion-basion line. The patients with intracranial lesions, hydrocephalus or previous craniotomy were excluded from the study. Results: The prevalence of Chiari type I malformation was found as 4% when both genders were taken into consideration. The prevalence was 3.3% in females and 0.7% in males. Chiari type I malformation was associated with syringomyelia in 0.5% of females and 0.2% of males. In the present study, concomitant syringomyelia was observed in 0.7% of the patients. On the other hand, incidence of Chiari type I malformation was found relatively higher in the patients with scoliosis (15.4%). The ratio of this co-occurrence was higher in females (11.4%) when compared to the males (4%). Conclusion: In the present study, the prevalence of Chiari type I malformation was investigated in a large population, consisting of 2480 individuals, and its association with syringomyelia and scoliosis.
