Introduction: Since the aim of fluid therapy in diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) is to remove ß-hydroxybutyrate with Na from the kidneys, the first recommended fluid is 0.9% NaCl. BECl (Na-Cl-32) is the best chloride evaluation. Administering fluids with BECl <32 in DKA may cause hyperchloremic acidosis. This study investigates the effect of the administered fluids with BECl <32 and BECl ≥32 on metabolic acid-base status in the first 6 hours of DKA. Materials and Methods: Patients with DKA admitted to intensive care units (ICU) in the last 15 years were retrospectively evaluated. Demographic data, blood gas samples, and strong ion gap (SIG) were recorded at the ICU admission and the 6th hour. According to BECl values of administered fluids in the first 6 hours, patients were separated into two groups: Group I (Fluids with BECl<32) and group II (fluids with BECl ≥32). SPSS Version 28 was used for statistical analysis. Results: DKA was detected in forty-seven (0.2%) of 15,364 patients. Thirty-two (GI=26; GII=6) patients with DKA were included in the study. Demographics and blood gas parameters at the ICU admission and SIG, Na, K, lactate, and glucose levels at the 6th hour were similar in groups. At the 6th hour, pH, PaCO
2 , HCO3 , SBE, and Na-Cl difference in GI were significantly lower (p<0.001, p=0.016, p=0.011, p=0.022 and p<0.001, respectively), whereas Cl was significantly higher than GII (p=0.023). Conclusion: Although SIG is decreased by administering fluids with BECl <32 in DKA, the reason for the lack of expected increase in HCO3 and SBE and continued hypocapnia at the 6th hour is the iatrogenic hyperchloremia. Hence, the usage of fluids with BECl <32 in DKA should be avoided, and the fluid therapy algorithm of DKA should be reconsidered. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]- Published

- Abstract
This study explored the relationship between 4th-grade students’ functional literacy levels and their problem-solving skills and the effect level of students’ functional literacy experiences on their problem-solving ability. Employing the quantitative research approach, relational survey design, one of the general survey designs, was used in the study. The study universe was 4th-grade students attending public elementary schools in the central districts of Gaziantep. The study was conducted on a sample of 744 4th grade students who were selected by a simple random sampling method. In the study, data were collected with scales related to two different variables, functional literacy and problemsolving. Necessary approvals for the study were taken before the implementation. SPSS 15.0 package program was utilized to analyze the data. Frequency and percentage were performed to determine the demographic information of participating students; arithmetic mean, standard deviation and standard error were performed to determine the functional literacy levels and perception levels of problem-solving skills; Pearson product-moment correlation coefficient to determine the relationship between functional literacy and its sub-dimensions, and perceptions of problem-solving skills; and finally, multiple regression analysis calculations were made to determine the predictive power of functional literacy and its sub-dimensions on perceptions of problemsolving skills. According to the study results, students’ functional literacy levels were at a medium level and their problem-solving skills were at a partially high level. Also, there was a positive significant relationship between the students’ functional literacy levels and their problem-solving skills. Furthermore, it was determined that functional literacy and its subdimensions significantly predicted students’ problem-solving skills. The study results were discussed within the framework of the related literature. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The aim of this study is to examine the attitudes and behaviors of university students towards "foods containing Genetically Modified Organisms" (GMO). For this purpose, firstly, a research model was proposed to describe the relationships between attitudes and behaviors towards GMO by making use of the literature review, and then various hypotheses were formed to test the relationships between the factors in the model. The factors in the proposed research model are "Attitude (ATT),""Attitude towards Knowledge and Technology (KNOW)," "Trust (TRUST)," "Perceived Benefit (BEN)," "Perceived Risk (RISK)" and "Behavior (BEH)". In the study, the proposed research model was analyzed using Structural Equation Modeling (SEM), and the suitability of the proposed model was evaluated according to various fit criteria. As a result of the analysis, it was determined that a one-unit increase in the perceived benefit and perceived risk for GMO will cause an increase of 0.89 units and a decrease of 0.19 units, respectively, in the attitude towards GMO. In addition, it was determined that as trust in scientific research results, media, labeling system and inspection systems increase, the perception that GMO can be beneficial will also increase. In the study, the correlations between visual mathematics literacy perceptions, reasoning skills on geometrical shapes and geometrical performances of pre-service mathematics teachers were investigated. The study participants included 384 pre-service mathematics teachers, who were attending education departments in two universities located in Eastern and Southeastern Anatolia regions in Turkey. In the study, due to time and workforce limitations, convenience sampling method was preferred, and relational screening model was adopted. The study data was collected with visual mathematics literacy perception scale, reasoning skills on geometric shapes and geometry performance tests developed by the authors. Analysis of the correlation between the variables demonstrated that there was a moderate correlation between visual mathematics literacy perception and both the reasoning skills on geometrical shapes and the geometry performance, and there was a high correlation between the reasoning skills on geometric shapes and geometry performance. Primary model path analysis demonstrated that visual mathematics literacy perception had a moderate effect on reasoning skills on geometrical shapes and geometry performance. It was also determined that reasoning skills on geometric shapes had a strong effect on geometry performance. The findings of the path analysis conducted on the sub-dimensions revealed that all sub-dimensions had a moderate positive effect on reasoning skills on geometric shapes. It was also found that visual mathematics literacy perception had a moderate positive effect on visual perception, geometry knowledge, spatial intelligence and concretization sub-dimensions and geometry performance. This study was conducted to reveal Turkish consumers’ (18-65 years residing 10 cities, n = 1200) opinions and use of food labels, nutrition, and health claims. The majority of both females and males (64.7%, 68.2%) seldom read food labels. Risk for not paying attention to food labels was increased 1.287-fold when the gender was male. The percentage of reading food labels increases as education and income levels of individuals increase (p < 0.05). Expiry dates of foods were the most frequent read item on labels (58.0%). Males mostly read information on label to learn the price of the food (71.0%) while females read it to learn the energy value of food (79.0%). Females had more knowledge on nutrition claims compared to males (p < 0.05). The nutrition claims, which were most frequently read by females and males, were trans fat free (23.5%, 21.0%) and low fat/fat free (23.3%, 20.5%). The claim organic was paid most attention on fruit and vegetables (52.0%). The claim “low cholesterol contributes to maintenance of cardiovascular-health” was the most common health claim read. In summary, Turkish consumer’s behaviour of reading labels and nutrition-health claims could change according to some sociodemographic factors and food products. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
