Abstract

Concrete is the most frequently employed man-made material in modern building construction. Nevertheless, the serviceability of concrete structures has been significantly reduced owing to a variety of durability issues, especially when serving in a non-ideal environment and exposed to internal/external attacks such as chloride penetration, carbonation, sulfate, and so on. Several scholars have performed numerous studies on the strength and microstructure features of volcanic ash (VA) concrete and have discovered encouraging findings. However, since the information is spread, readers find it difficult to evaluate the benefits of VA-based concrete, limiting its applicability. As a result, a detailed study is required that offers the reader an easy approach and highlights all essential facts. The goal of this article (Part Ц) is to conduct a compressive review of the physical and chemical aspects of VA and its impact on concrete durability and microstructure properties. The findings demonstrate that VA considerably improves concrete durability owing to pozzolanic reaction and micro-filling voids in concrete materials. Cost–benefit analysis shows that 10% utilization of VA as cement decreased the overall cost by 30%. The assessment also notes a research gap that must be filled before VA may be utilized in practice.

45. Waste ceramic powder for sustainable concrete production as supplementary cementitious material.

Abstract

A detailed examination was carried out by substituting waste ceramic powder (WCP) for specific ratios of cement in concrete. To achieve this, five different WCP percentages (10%, 20%, 30%, 40%, and 50%) were used in manufacturing of concrete. First, the workability and slump values in the fresh state of concrete were determined by performing a slump test. Subsequently, several tests, including compressive strength (CS), splitting tensile strength (STS), and flexural strength (FS), were conducted on the specimens to assess the effectiveness of concrete fabricated using WCP. Variations in the strength were determined in terms of the various amounts of WCP. The findings demonstrated that by including WCP at levels of 10%, 20%, 30%, 40%, and 50%, there were corresponding reductions in CS of 5.8%, 21.8%, 47.1%, 63.2%, and 73.6%, respectively. The decreases in STS were 6.3%, 13.8%, 35.2%, 49.7%, and 65.4%, respectively, when a concrete STS value of 1.59 MPa was considered. Similarly, when the WCP content increased, FS was reduced by 15.3%, 21.4%, 31.6%, 44.9%, and 54.1%, respectively. This is very significant because it represents one of the key issues in calculating the optimal quantity of WCP in relation to both the strength and the amount of WCP utilized. Furthermore, taking into account our experimental research and previous studies on concrete produced utilizing WCP, straightforward equations were provided for practical use to predict CS, STS, and FS. In addition, scanning electron microscopy was done to validate the findings obtained from the experimental part of the study. The artificial neural network modeling technique was adopted to estimate the concrete properties with average coefficients of determination (R2) as 0.945 (CS), 0.901 (STS), and 0.856 (FS) with K-fold cross-validation. Abstract

In this research, the effect of using waste glass powder (WGP) as a partial replacement for cement on the flexural behavior of reinforced-concrete-beams (R-C-Bs) was investigated. For this aim, a total of 9 specimens were produced, and investigational experimentations were conducted to evaluate the flexural performances of R-C-Bs. Subsequently, the cement was partially replaced with WGP with weight percentages of 0%, 10%, 20% and 30%. Furthermore, the influence of stirrup spacing (SS) in the longitudinal reinforcement on productivity was also examined. The results presented indicate that the efficient WGP percentage might be considered as 10% of the partial replacement of cement. Increasing the WGP percentage within the cement by more than 10% may considerably reduce the ability of the R-C-Bs, noticeably when the lengthwise reinforcement proportion is high. Additionally, the experimental shear strengths of R-C-Bs attained from the flexural tests were compared with the shear capacities estimated using Eurocode 2 and ACI 318 − 19 regulations. It was concluded that the shear capacities calculated with ACI318-19 are much lower than the values calculated with EC2. Furthermore, it may be observed that ACI318-19 calculates the shear capacities of R-C-Bs to be 15–51% higher than those of the experimental results. Furthermore, the Digital Image Correlation (DIC) was used to study the flexural cracks/micro-cracks in R-C-Bs. Comparisons indicate that DIC has similar deformations and fracture properties for the R-C-Bs as the experimental tests. Abstract

The article presents the possibility of increasing the water resistance of gypsum binders (GBs) obtained based on synthetic gypsum by introducing additives derived from industrial wastes. Regularities were obtained for the influence of the type and amount of additives on the water/gypsum ratio (W/G), strength indicators and water resistance of high-strength GB. The introduction of a single-component additive to improve water resistance does not have a significant effect. Complex additives based on Portland cement, granulated blast-furnace slag, electric steel-smelting slag, expanded clay dust and granite screenings of various fractions have been developed that make the maximum contribution to improving the water resistance of a high-strength GB based on synthetic calcium sulphate dihydrate, which made it possible to increase the water-resistance coefficient from 0.39 to 0.82.
