This research examines the relationship between vernacular photography, representation, the market and the global cultural economy through the case study of a photographic print featuring Naşide Saffet Hanım [Esen], the Turkish Beauty Queen of the year 1931, the winner of the contest organized by the Cumhuriyet newspaper. It traces the itinerary of a photograph from a family archive to a second hand book store in Beyoğlu, Istanbul almost a century later, and later to an Open Access photography archive, through the questions of identity and cultural heritage. Given to a woman named Ulviye as a gift, this print is a fascinating example of how a studio portrait of a Turkish beauty queen came to be circulated among family and friends in the early 1930s.

PubMed ID: 30516526, Objective: It has been reported that women receive fewer preventive recommendations regarding pharmacological treatment, lifestyle modifications, and cardiac rehabilitation compared with men who have a similar risk profile. This study was an investigation of the impact of gender on cardiovascular risk profile and secondary prevention measures for coronary artery disease (CAD) in the Turkish population. Methods: Statistical analyses were based on the European Action on Secondary and Primary Prevention through Intervention to Reduce Events (EUROASPIRE)-IV cross-sectional survey data obtained from 17 centers in Turkey. Male and female patients, aged 18 to 80 years, who were hospitalized for a first or recurrent coronary event (coronary artery bypass graft, percutaneous coronary intervention, acute myocardial infarction, or acute myocardial ischemia) were eligible. Results: A total of 88 (19.7%) females and 358 males (80.3%) were included. At the time of the index event, the females were significantly older (p=0.003) and had received less formal education (p0.05). Conclusion: Achievement of ideal body weight, fasting blood glucose and blood pressure targets was lower in women despite similar reported medication use. In this study, new sixteen 2-[5,6-diphenyl-3(2H)-pyridazinone-2-yl] acetamide and 3-[5,6- diphenyl-3(2H)-pyridazinone-2-yl] propanamide derivatives were synthesized and their in vivo analgesic and anti-inflammatory activities were tested in mice. Propanamide derivatives were found more potent than acetamide derivatives in terms of anti-inflammatory activity. The compound 8e which is a propanamide derivative exhibited higher analgesic and anti-inflammatory activities than other synthesized compounds and did not cause any gastric lesions and bleeding in stomachs of tested animals. Inhibitory activity of the active compounds on cyclooxygenase isoforms was also investigated by using in vitro human “whole blood assay” and found that these derivatives did not exert their analgesic and anti-inflammatory activities through COX inhibition and other mechanisms might be involved. Propanamit türevi olan bilesik 8e sentezi yapilan diger bilesikler ile karsilastirildiginda daha yüksek analjezik ve antienflamatuvar etki göstermis ve test edilen hayvanlarda gastrik lezyon veya kanamaya neden olmamistir. Aktif bilesiklerin siklooksijenaz izoformlari üzerine inhibitör etkileri “in vitro insan tam kan” yöntemiyle arastirilmis ve bu bilesiklerin analjezik ve antienflamatuvar etkilerini COX inhibibisyonu araciligiyla göstermedikleri, baska mekanizmalarin etkili olabilecegi bildirilmistir.

In this work hydrocarbon compounds of sediments were investigated in Lake Van. The samples were taken at 7 stations between 10-320 m depths.The highest oil level was found 4.69 µg/g at the station 2. The compounds identified by GC/MS were in aliphatic groups: 17 saturated, 4 cyclic, 5 unsaturated, 5 alcohol, 1 keton, 3 aldehyde and 4 fatty acids and in aromatic groups: 1 ring 1,2 rings 2 and 1 pregnane (5 beta). The compounds identified as: saturated compounds C5 - C43 are homologue series hydrocarbons, whereas alcohol, keton and aldehyde compounds are microbial oxydation products of saturated hydrocarbon compounds. Aromatic groups; phenol, and oxydation products of furane and benzofurane are oil products. This is the first record for the oil investigation in Lake Van.

Oil and detergent levels were determined in Ölüdeniz, Fethiye, Göçek and additionally heavy metal level in Göçek. Max. levels of oil pollution found were 1.99 mg/L in Ölüdeniz, 326,72 µg/L in Fethiye and 14,0 I µg/L in Göçek. Oil level exceeded the limit (13 µg/L) in Ölüdeniz and some Fethiye stations and only one station in Göçek. Max. detergent level was found in Ölüdeniz as 44.24 µg/L, in Fethiye as 37.04 µg/L and in Göçek as 25.29 µg/L. Detergent pollution was high in Ölüdeniz. Heavy metals determined at Göçek are 1.58 mg/g, for chrome, 4.6 % for Ferrum, 790 µg/g for Mangane, 19 µg/g for lead, 48 µg/g for copper, 62 µg/g for zinc. Chrome level exceeded the limit value of 100 µg/g. Oil level in sediment of Göçek at station 2 (145 µg/g) is higher than limit value of sediment ( 10 [µg/g).

Son çevre araştırmalarına göre ağır metal kirliliğinin artması ortamda bulunan organik kirleticilerin tek başına gösterdikleri etkilerden daha fazla etki gösterebildiklerini işaret etmektedir. Uzunçayır Baraj Gölü 2009 yılında su tutmaya başlamıştır. Göl suyundaki, özellikle evsel atık sular ile Munzur ve Pülümür Nehirlerinin drenaj alanındaki doğal kirleticilerden kaynaklanan kontaminasyonun belli dönemle izlenmesi bu çalışmanın temel amacını ifade etmektedir. Bu amaç doğrultusunda, belirlenen 6 dönem süresince (Temmuz 2011 ile Mayıs 2012 arasında ikişer aylık dönemler) Uzunçayır baraj gölü sahası üzerinde bulunan 10 ayrı istasyondan su örneklemesi yapılmış ve bu su örneklerinden bazı ağır metaller (Cr, Cu, Cd, Zn, Mn, Pb, Fe) analiz edilerek suyun ağır metalce kontaminasyon durumu izlenmiştir. Ağır metal tayini Atomik Absorbsiyon Spektroskopisi (AAS, Grafit) ile yapılmıştır. Ağır metal seviyelerinin mevsimsel ve istasyona bağlı olarak değişiklikler gösterdiği belirlenmiştir.

9th International Conference on the Mediterranean Coastal Environment, MEDCOAST 2009 --10 November 2009 through 14 November 2009 -- Sochi -- It is identified that 23 moderate tsunamis hit the Black Sea's coasts during the last 2000 years. Some of these tsunamis had been catastrophic at some vulnerable spots of the coast, flooding coastal areas and drowning a few thousand people in towns and villages; such as the ones in 544/545 and 1598. Tsunamis may leave their fingerprints typically in low-energy depositional environments such as coastal wetlands, lagoons and places protected from the sea by sandy barriers. Such places protect tsunami deposits from post-depositional erosion. The topographic conditions of the Black Sea coastline of Turkey are not favourable in preservation of marine flood deposits. A few low lying beaches or marsh-filled depositional sedimentary basins on the Thrace coasts may have geomorphologic potential, even usually intercalated with fluvial effects of nearby creeks, to record and keep the clues of historical tsunami impacts. Yet there have been relatively few studies of the processes associated with tsunami sediment transport, their deposition and nature; the present study attempts to understand if a coarse grained sedimentary unit mixed with marine shell fragments observed in a trench in Kiyikoy could have been related to a historical tsunami. The soil samples were tested for their particle characterization, micro-fossil contents, standard sediment chemistry and biochemical conditions. Even though some effects of a marine intrusion were observed, the results are open to debate. For more meaningful regional explanations and to give way to numerical modelling which make the main tasks for tsunami hunting in the Black Sea, similar studies throughout the basin are needed.

We compared the effects of an aerobic exercise program with a home based exercise therapy on the clinical signs and symptoms of osteoarthritis (OA) of the knee. The Western Ontario and MacMaster Universities (WOMAC) osteoarthritis index and visual analogue scale (VAS) were used to evaluate knee pain and disability. Quality of life was assessed by the short form-36(SF-36) Health Survey mental and physical components. Physical performance was evaluated by a 30 meter walking time and a climb and descent time of 16 stairs. Maximal isometric quadriceps and hamstring forces were measured for each leg with a handgrip dynamometer. All measures were taken at the beginning and the end of the 8 weeks. 30 patients meeting ACR criteria for knee OA were taken in this study. Patients were randomized to either aerobic exercise group or home exercise group. At week 8. significant improvement in all pain and disability scores was observed in the aerobic exercise group. There were significant improvements in VAS pain, WOMAC and SF-36 disability scores in the home exercise group.
