Jellyfishes, which are one of the most important consumers in marine ecosystems, may have detri-mental effects on fish stocks that have economic value. Therefore, identifying and monitoring jelly-fish presence is important. We observed four individuals of symbiotic rhizostome scyphozoan Cot-ylorhiza tuberculata in the vicinity of the Princes’ Islands Archipelago, in the Northeast Sea of Marmara, Turkey in September 2020. Although this species is a common member of gelatinous plankton in the Mediterranean Sea, the present study is the first record from the Sea of Marmara.

Beroe ovata was collected from Kumkapı, İstanbul, Sea of Marmara. Fatty acids composition of Beroe ovata were determined using GC/MS. Total lipid amount was found as 0.98±0.05 mg/g (n=6). Total saturated; monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fatty acids percentages were 35.78, 14.11 and 37.09, respectively. Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA, 20:5n-3) percentage was 9.75 and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA, 22:6n-3) percentage was 23.01. Docosapentaenoic acid was not detected in Beroe ovata. EPA/DHA ratio was found as 0.42. The difference of fatty acids between the Beroe ovata with Beroe cucumis and Beroe forskalii were detection of 21:0 ve 17:1n-7 in only Beroe ovata This paper is the first study on the fatty acid composition of Beroe ovata.

Marmara Denizinin kıyı bölgelerinden toplanan Beroe ovata'''nın toplam lipid miktarı 0.98±0.05 mg/g (n=6) olarak tespit edildi. Beroe ovata'nın yağ asidi bileşenleri gaz kromatografısi-kütle spektrometresi ile tayin edildi. Toplam doymuş, tek ve çok doymamış yağ asidi yüzdeleri sırasıyla 35.78, 14.11 ve 37.09 olarak bulundu. Eikozapentaenoik asit (EPA, 20:5n-3) ve dokozahekzaenoik asit (DHA, 22:6n-3) miktarları sırasıyla 9.75% ve 23.01% olarak bulundu. Dokozapentaenoik asit Marmara Dehizi'nde bulunan Beroe ovata'da bulunmadı. EPA/DHA oranı 0.42 olarak bulundu. ÖZETİZMİT KÖRFEZİ'NDE PELAJİK CNİDARİA VE CTENOPHORATÜRLERİNİN BOLLUĞU, DAĞILIMI VE BUNLARI ETKİLEYENFAKTÖRLERİN İNCELENMESİBu çalışma, İzmit Körfezindeki pelajik Cnidaria ve Ctenophora'nın aylara göremevsimsel dağılımını belirlemek amacı ile Temmuz 2001-Kasım 2002 tarihleri arasındayapılmıştır.İzmit Körfezinde Cnidaria filumuna ait 4 tür (Aurelia aurita, Rhizostoma pulmo, Lensiasp., Aglaura hemistoma ve Solmundella bitentaculata) ve 1 genus (Lensia sp.),Ctenophora filumuna ait 3 tür (Mnemiopsis leidyi, Beroe ovata, Plerobrachia pileus)olmak üzere toplam 8 jelatinli organizma bulunmuştur. Aglaura hemistoma veSolmundella bitentaculata İzmit Körfezi ve Marmara Denizi için yeni kayıt türlerolarak kaydedildi. Lensia sp.'de ilk kez İzmit Körfezinde kaydedilmiştir. Jelatinliorganizmaların tüm örnekleme süresince bölgesel dağılımları akıntı ve hakim rüzgarlaretkisinde kalarak bahar ve yaz aylarında tüm körfeze yayıldığı, sonbahar ve kışaylarında ise körfezdeki miktarı azalarak batı bölgesine yöneldiği kaydedildi.M. leidyi yıl boyunca körfezde bulunmasına rağmen yoğun olarak üremesi yaz vesonbahar aylarında gerçekleşti. B. ovata sadece sıcak aylarda körfezde bulundu ve M.leidyi ile beslenerek bu türün bolluk ve biyomasını etkilediği görüldü. P. pileus kış sonuila yaz başında kaydedildi. A. aurita'nın bolluk ve biyoması yıl boyunca mevsimsel birdalgalanma göstererek en yüksek değerlere sonbaharda ulaştı. R. pulmo sadece yazsonu ve sonbaharda kaydedildi. Diğer Cnidaria türleri ise yaz aylarında artış gösterdi.Sonuç olarak türler arası rekabetin jelatinli organizmaların bolluk ve dağılımında etkiliolan en önemli faktör olduğu anlaşıldı.Yüzey suyunda M. leidyi, B. ovata P. pileus ve R. pulmo'nun dağılımında özelliklesıcaklığın önemli bir etkisi kaydedilmişken, tabakalar arası dağılımda ise tuzluluk veçözünmüş oksijen değerleri önemli derecede belirleyici oldumuştur.ix SUMMARYABUNDANCE AND DISTRIBUTION OF PELAGIC CNIDARIA,CTENOPHORA AND EFFECTIVE FACTORS ON THOSE IN IZMIT BAYMaterials of this study were collected between July 2001-November 2002, monthly inevery season in order to determine spatial distribution of pelagic Cnidaria andCtenophora in the Izmit Bay.7 gelatinous zooplankton species belonging to two phyla (Aurelia aurita, Rhizostomapulmo, Aglaura hemistoma and Solmundella bitentaculata belonging to Cnidaria andMnemiopsis leidyi, Beroe ovata, Plerobrachia pileus belonging to Ctenephora) wereidentified. Aglaura hemistoma and Solmundella bitentaculata were found as newrecords for Izmit Bay and Marmara Sea. Besides, Lensia sp. was identified to be a newrecord for Izmit Bay too. The gelatinous zooplankton distribute throughout the IzmitBay in spring and summer, corresponding to currents and power of winds. However, theamount of these organisms decrease in Izmit Bay in autumn and winter and flowtowards the Marmara Sea with the currents.Although M. leidyi individuals were found in Izmit Bay in whole year, the densereproduction time was in summer and autumn. B. ovata was found in Izmit Bay only inthe warm season and effected the abundance of M. leidyi by feeding on this species. TheP. pileus individuals were recorded from the end of winter to the early summer. A.aurita displayed regular variations in biomass and abundance. It reached to the highestmean abundance and biomass values in autumn. R. pulmo was recorded only in the endof summer and autumn The other Cnidaria species increased in summer months. As aresult, competition among the gelatinous zooplankton are the most important factor forthe abundance and distribution of these organisms.While the temperature has a cosiderable effect on the seasonal distribution of M. leidyi,B. ovata, P. pileus and R. pulmo in surface waters, vertical distribution of these specieswere affected by salinity and dissolved oxygen significantly.x 116

ÖZET Gökçeada'nın Neritik Bölgesindeki Mnemiopsis leidyi (Agassiz, 1865)'nin Bolluğu ve Dağılımı Mart 1998- Şubat 1999 tarihleri arasında yapılan bu çalışmada Kuzey Ege Denizinde bulunan Gökçeada'nın neritik bölgesinde bir Ctenophora türü olan Mnemiopsis leidyVmn bolluğu ve dağılımı araştırılmıştır. Araştırma materyali 9 istasyondan hem vertikal hem de horizontal çekim yöntemi ile özel plankton ağları ile elde edilmiştir. Örnekler deniz suyu içerisinde incelenmiş, tanımlanmış, miktarları tespit edilmiş ve biyometrik ölçümleri yapılarak 3 ayrı boy grubuna ayrılmıştır. Araştırma sonucunda Mnemiopsis leidyVmn. Gökçeada'nın neritik bölgesindeki ortalama bolluğu vertikal çekimde 0,105 adet/m3 horizontal çekimde ise 0,005 adet/m, yıllık ortalama biyoması ise vertikal çekimde 1,231 g/m3 horizontal çekimde ise 0,059 g/m3 olarak hesaplanmıştır. Mnemiopsis leidyi 5. istasyonda her iki çekimde de maksimum biyomasa ulaşmıştır, 7. istasyonda ise örnekleme yapılan ayların hiçbirinde Mnemiopsis leidyi örneğine rastlanmamıştır. Bölgede Mnemiopsis leidyVmn. yıllık boy ortalamasını ağırlıklı olarak orta boydaki (I=10-45mm) bireyler oluşturmaktadır. Mnemiopsis leidyi yıl içinde her iki çekimde de kış mevsiminde maksimum bolluğa ve sonbaharda da maksimum biyomasa ulaşmıştır. VI SUMMARY Abundance and Distribution of Mnemiopsis leidyi (Agassiz, 1865) in the Neritic Region of Gökçeada (Northern Aegean Sea). In this study, the abundance and distribution of Mnemiopsis leidyi, a ctenophore, was investigated in the neritic region of Gökçeada (Northern Aegean Sea) during the period of March 1998 - February 1999. Samples from nine stations collected both vertically and horizontally using plankton nets of 200 urn and 500 um mesh sizes respectively. Samples collected were examined, identified, counted and measured biometrically dividing into three different length sizes. As a result, average abundance of Mnemiopsis leidyi was calculated 0,105 individual/m3 for vertical haul and 0,005 individual/m3 for horizontal haul; average biomass for a year was found l,231g/m for vertical haul and 0,059g/m for horizontal haul. Mnemiopsis leidyi reached maximum biomass at 5. station vertically and horizontally however Mnemiopsis leidyi was absent at 7. station during the year. Average annual length size of the island was consisted of individual with medium size (1=10-45 mm). Mnemiopsis leidyi reached its maximum abundance in the winter and maximum biomass in the autumn vertically and horizontally. VII 42

This manuscript reports on four new jellyfish species in the Sea of Marmara (Turkey) (the scyphozoans Mawia benovici and Drymonema dalmatinum, hydrozoan Aequorea forskalea, and thaliacean Salpa maxima) based on plankton collections made in the years 2019–2021. This is the first record of Mawia benovici in both Turkish coastal areas and the Sea of Marmara. The jellyfish that was previously re-corded as Drymonema sp. in the repetition Sea of Marmara was identified at the species level as D. dalmatinum. Furthermore, their possible introduction pathways are briefly discussed here
