Forest fires are among the most common disasters that threaten living spaces today. The increase in global warming, deterioration of air quality, and decreases in animal and plant diversity are the main damages caused by forest fires. In order to combat the threats posed by forest fires, all states develop various policies and make serious financial expenditures. It is essential to develop technological products used in this fight and to find faster and more definitive solutions to forest fires. In the thesis study conducted, an artificial intelligencebased unmanned aerial vehicle system was developed based on these problems. The developed system has the ability to patrol in a potential fire area and perform autonomous flight and analysis. Images are instantly transferred to the ground unit with the camera on the system and processed. Signs of fire and smoke are searched in the processed images. In the event of a possible fire, the system autonomously flies in the fire area and performs a task to intervene in the fire. In the event of a fire, a horizontal shot estimate is made by processing wind speed, UAV speed, and UAV altitude information with artificial intelligence models. As a result of the estimate, the moment when the fire extinguishing ball should be released while the UAV is moving is calculated. The model estimates how far the horizontal shot will travel on the X axis. The end point of the path to be taken from the X axis is estimated for the fire center. Thus, it is aimed to drop the fire extinguishing ball into the flaming area with a correct shot. As a result of the study, it was observed that the flaming parts of the fire could be detected at a rate of 100% with the deep learning architecture developed. In smoke detection, the developed architecture achieved 98% success. Random Forest, XGB Boost and Pycaret algorithms were used to predict the horizontal shooting process. Among the algorithms used in the study, XGB Boost was found to be the most successful algorithm with an accuracy rate of 0.99 according to the R2 performance evaluation metric. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

SEARCH & rescue operations , *DRONE aircraft , *MULTIAGENT systems , *TRAFFIC monitoring , *LEARNING strategies , *NAVIGATION - Abstract
Mobile vehicles are widely used in various area coverage applications such as mapping, traffic monitoring, search and rescue operations. Appropriate positioning model and effective learning strategy are required to improve the coverage process. Mobile vehicles can adapt to dynamic environments and find the optimum locations with the navigation mechanism that includes a motion model. In studies, where the positioning process is managed on the basis of a multi-agent mobile system, multiple agents should complete tasks such as detection, data collection and surveillance with a collaborative approach. This learning-based process can be carried out through mobile agents that can learn to optimize a task in real time. In this study, it is aimed to effectively cover points of interest (PoI) in a dynamic environment by modeling a group of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) on the basis of a learning multi-agent system. The target area is decomposed into grids to maximize PoI coverage and minimize energy consumption. Decomposition is performed by considering the location of the target area and the communication distance of the UAVs modeled as mobile agents. However, mobile agents planning to go to grids also learn to avoid collisions. The proposed method has been tested in a simulation environment and the results are presented by comparing with similar studies. The results show that the proposed method outperforms existing similar studies and is suitable for area coverage applications. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Photogrammetric relief studies have been used for years in the documentation of our cultural heritage. Photogrammetric studies are constantly being renewed with the technology that has been developing recently, and it allows for faster, easily and sufficient accuracy documentation of our cultural heritage. Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) photogrammetry has also gained its place as a highly preferred photogrammetry technique, especially in recent years. In this study, the Hasas Baba Tomb, which is located in the city center of Aksaray, its exact date is not known due to the absence of a written epitaph, but which is thought to have been built in the late Anatolian Seljuk State or during the Karamanoğulları period if considering its architectural features, was 3D modeled using UAV data and three different photogrammetric software. Agisoft Metashape Professional, Pix4D Mapper and Context Capture software was used for 3D modeling. Then, the position and height accuracy was investigated and it was concluded that the position accuracy was found as 3.39, 3.66 and 3.42 cm for all three software, respectively. And height accuracy was found that 3.04, 3.24, 3.28 cm respectively. The results are within the margin of error and can be used as a base in restoration projects. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
With the rapid advancement of technology, the use of artificial intelligence (AI) is increasing in various sectors such as education, health, security and defense. A critical application of AI is highway management, especially with the rise of autonomous vehicles. The focus of this study is to address the problem of deformations in highway marking lines that pose challenges for autonomous vehicles and affect traffic safety. The research involves using unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) to create an original image dataset of highway lines. This data set will be processed with image enhancement techniques and deep learning models. The first stage involves cleaning the images from foreign matter. Deep learning models will then identify potential line deformations. These models will be developed and trained for optimum accuracy using various performance metrics. In the study, the mobilenet v3 model, trained with the images in the data set, reached an accuracy rate of 89.58%, the resnet50 v2 model 77.78% and the Convolutional Neural Network model 92.55%. The ultimate goal is to implement a real-time system to accurately detect and report differences in highway lines by combining the UAV with the computer system on the ground. This will ensure timely notification to authorities and help prevent traffic safety problems related to line deformations. This approach demonstrates the practical applications of artificial intelligence in improving road safety and autonomous vehicle navigation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study evaluates the effects of various ground sampling distances on the diameter and height measurements of brutian pine trees in point cloud data from unmanned aerial vehicle photographs. The study is conducted within the Çandır Forest Management Directorate of the Isparta Regional Directorate of Forestry. The results serve as independent variables in machine learning methods to predict field-measured diameter and height values. Nine distinct machine learning techniques were employed, including AdaBoost Regression, Artificial Neural Networks, Deep Neural Networks, Decision Tree Regression, Gradient Boosting Regression, Linear Regression, Random Forest Regression, Support Vector Regression, and eXtreme Gradient Boosting Regression. The results reveal that predictions based on data with a low ground sampling distance exhibit the lowest correlation values for both diameter and height, while predictions made using data with a high ground sampling distance had the lowest correlation values. Deep Neural Network achieved the highest success rate for diameter estimation, while Decision Tree Regression exhibited the lowest success. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

As the use of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) for military and civilian purposes increases, UAV route planning problem has gained importance. The problem varies according to factors like the number and properties of UAVs, the characteristics of the terrain and the objective functions used; and different approaches have been developed for it in the literature. This study considers route planning for a fleet of homogeneous UAVs that need to collect information from target points with different levels of importance before returning to the base. The two objectives used are minimizing the total distance traveled and maximizing the total importance level of the targets visited, and alternative efficient solutions are generated rather than a single solution. The problem is solved with mathematical modelling and genetic algorithm approaches, and computational tests are made with different number of UAVs and target points. Solutions from different regions of the objective space could be obtained to be presented to the decision makers by both methods. Also, with the genetic algorithm, solutions close to the exact solutions could be obtained in considerably shorter computation times. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In recent years, forest fires can be brought under control in line with the information obtained from Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), which play an important role in determining the progression of fires, detecting heat points and determining intervention locations. In this study, if the UAV detects the fire by autonomously positioning in the area where the fire is located, the point where the fire reaches the most intense temperature is determined with the help of the thermal camera, and it is ensured that the fireball is dropped to the target with a 100% success rate. The requirements of the UAV, which will be produced in order to realize this task, such as fast, load-carrying and stable flight are also taken into consideration. In addition to being economical and long-lasting of the materials inside, it will be able to fly efficiently in most weather conditions (foggy, dark, etc.). In the construction of the UAV, a domestic Electronic Speed Controller (ESC) with a unique design is produced to meet the sufficient current. With this acquisition, ESC, which will meet the requirements by sending sufficient current to more than one Brushless DC (BLDC) motor, has been tested on our Radio Controlled (RC) aircraft and included in the project. Today, unmanned aerial vehicles are used in many applications that can be dangerous and troublesome for humans. One of the most important factor that limits the usage of these vehicles is that the battery capacities are not sufficient for many applications. In recent years, there have been studies on how the battery consumption of unmanned aerial vehicles occurs under different factors in order to minimize the difficulties caused by this constraint. In this study, the battery consumption value that will occur when a micro class unmanned aerial vehicle is moved with different speeds in the horizontal plane have been obtained experimentally. Battery consumption models were obtained using linear regression and nonlinear regression methods using data on battery consumption. Experimental data and the results shows the success of the models are presented in tables and graphs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Hazelnut, which has the most common cultivation area after almonds and walnuts among the shell fruits in the world, contains high levels of fat, protein, carbohydrates, various minerals and vitamins. Hazelnut has a broad growing area around the world, and Turkey accounts for 58% of world production with 776,000 tons annually. With this production capacity, Turkey ranks first in hazelnut production over the world. Harmful insects in hazelnut trees are the main factors that reduce hazelnut yield and quality. Pesticides are sprayed with backpack sprayers in the fight against these pests in hazelnut trees. Farmers are directly exposed to pesticides in these practices, which use high amounts of pesticides and water. In recent years, the use of unmanned agricultural vehicles in agriculture has increased. Drones are also used in pesticide applications in agriculture. In this study, the suitability of pesticide applications with the drone in hazelnut fields in Giresun province in terms of field conditions and spraying efficiency was investigated. In September 2021, applications were made with DJI Agras MG-1P model spraying drone in a selected hazelnut orchard in Uzgur village of Giresun province. The drone has 4 Teejet XR11001VS fan jet nozzles. Water-sensitive papers were placed on different regions on the hazelnut trees to be sprayed for drop measurements. In the experiments, hazelnut trees were sprayed using water at different heights and spraying rates. 6 flights were carried out at 1.5 and 2 meters altitudes and 1, 2 and 3 L.da-1 spray rates, and three hazel trees were sprayed as three repetitions in each flight. After the flight trials, the water-sensitive papers were scanned on the scanner, and the volume median diameters and the number of droplets per square centimetre were calculated in the DepositScan software. As a result of the analyses done, it was observed that the applications performed at 1 L.da-1 and 2 L.da-1 spray rates would not be sufficient in terms of spraying efficiency. As the drone flight altitude increased, the accumulation of the drops on the inner leaves decreased. In terms of drop distribution, the most homogeneous application parameter was found to be 1.5 meters high above the upper leaves of the hazel trees and 3 L.da-1 spray rate. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

CRIME scene searches , *DRONE aircraft , *FORENSIC sciences , *SEARCH & rescue operations , *REMOTE control , *CRIME scenes - Abstract
The contribution of forensic sciences to the judicial system in the study and analysis of judicial events using scientific methods and analyzes is extremely valuable. The findings obtained from the examination of the crime scene, analyzes and assessments by forensic scientists become evidence that will be submitted to the court. The existence of the crime is examined, the relations between the victim, subject and the crime scene are clarified thanks to this evidence. It is important to closely monitor the activities of all units working for ensuring justice and a safe living space. Unmanned aerial vehicles and unmanned aerial vehicle systems are the main contributors to these studies in the 21st century. Unmanned Aerial Vehicle is defined as an aircraft that is can be flown by remote pilot control or has autonomous operation planned by the pilot control. Unmanned Aerial Vehicle System is the whole of the system elements such as the control station, the command-and-control data link, the take-off and landing system. Although these systems were developed for military use, they started to be used in civilian areas with the development of their equipment. Those areas are mainly comprised of journalism, disaster management, search and rescue operations, cartography, three-dimensional modeling, security inspections, border control, mining, meteorological, ecological, and archaeological studies. In this review, the characteristics of Unmanned Aerial Vehicle and Systems and their civil usage areas were investigated through a historical approach, and the importance of future studies in the field of crime scene investigation in terms of forensic sciences was emphasized. INDOOR positioning systems , *INVENTORIES , *DRONE aircraft , *BAR codes , *LIDAR , *WAREHOUSES - Abstract
Many companies make regular stock-taking to supply the products they need. Unfortunately, in most companies, this stock-taking is done in the traditional way, i.e., manual counting. This process is timeconsuming, costly, and even dangerous. In this regard, stock-taking should be automated, real-time, effective and secure. Within the scope of this study, an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) based automatic stock-taking system that can operate indoors is proposed. This system solves the indoor positioning problem with an ultrawideband based positioning system. In addition, it works safely in warehouse environments with the obstacle avoidance function using the laser rangefinder (LiDAR) on the UAV. While the UAV moves autonomously in the warehouse environment, the video data received by the camera is processed online and the stocktaking process is run. A prototype is designed for this proposed system and experimental studies are conducted in a stock-taking test area set up in a laboratory environment. These experimental studies show that this proposed UAV system can perform three-dimensional positioning with a maximum error level of fewer than four centimeters in the indoor environment, can work safely with the obstacle avoidance function, and finally, according to the test scenario, it successfully detects twelve different barcodes of the products to be counted and fulfills the stock-taking function. The Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) have become more popular and functional for today's needs in comparison to the conventional aircrafts for military, agriculture and private purposes. Generally, these vehicles are using propeller based propulsion systems. Thus, aerodynamic shape optimization is a vital process to improve their performance. Accordingly, in the present study, a Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) based open- source shape optimization framework (combined use of a CFD solver, Optimization solver, Free-Form Deformation (FFD) tool and Mesh Generator utility) is designed to optimize the shape of a generic UAV propeller. As a result, the open-source shape optimization framework here woks quite efficiently and the Figure of Merit (FM) of the propeller has been improved by around 40 %. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The use of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) in every field is increasing rapidly. In order for UAVs to perform their duties correctly, they must be able to maintain continuous communication with ground stations. The use of WiFi wireless communication protocol has increased due to its high bandwidth. One of the most important threats that can threaten this type of communication is Denial of Service (DoS) attacks. In the event of such an attack, the UAV becomes inaccessible and may crash. Especially when the open port number is known, it becomes much easier to perform attacks that consume the resources of the drone. In this study, a mechanism is proposed to eliminate or at least mitigate the attack risk. This mechanism enables UAVs using wireless communication (WiFi) to communicate using TCP over UDP using middleware. In addition, by periodically changing the UDP open ports with a secret port number sequence known to both parties, it prevents the attacker from using the open port for a long time and renders the attack ineffective. In this study, the effects of the port hopping method on UAVs are evaluated. Test results on real systems shows that the proposed system makes the communication system of UAVs more resistant to DoS attacks by 91.2%. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The concept of urban air mobility (UAM) referring to the conduct of safe and efficient air traffic operations with manned or unmanned aerial vehicles in a metropolitan area has become a more research topic in the aviation literature in recent years. The concept of UAM expected to be a solution to the congestion of land traffic as a result of the shift of the population to the cities in the world comes to the fore with the development of aircraft technology and the maturity of the aviation concepts. Leading aviation industry organizations such as NASA, FAA, Airbus, EASA, EUROCONTROL carry out projects for the UAM system. The UAM system is expected to have a market of 60 billion Euros with 23,000 aircraft in 2035. In this study, firstly, the past and present process of the UAM concept is examined and a view from the traditional aviation perspective is provided, and then the two most important factors for the integration of the system into the airspace and the transportation network in the cities, air traffic management (ATM) and community acceptance, evaluations are made and solutions are discussed. - Abstract
Unmanned aerial vehicles have become daily use devices with the widespread use of sports and commercial use. Production has become easier with the developing technology and due to academic, hobby etc. It has enabled the production of unmanned aerial vehicles in places, such as homes or schools. Some undetected hardware or software problems and errors may occur during the production of unmanned aerial vehicles. Poor adjustments of flight parameters, deviation of centre of gravity, errors that can be encountered in electrical connections are some of the problems. Common situations like these can cause unmanned aerial vehicles to crash; it can damage the vehicle and the living creatures around it. A system was required which can detect the errors hence provide the unmanned aerial vehicles to fly stable without being damage. Thanks to our work, a 3-axis controlled flight test rig has been prepared for rotary wing unmanned aerial vehicles. Flight detection parameters can be observed with the microprocessor-controlled circuit on the test setup and the mobile application prepared for setup. While axis information is obtained with "IMU" sensors, communication between the smartphone and the device is provided by "Bluetooth" technology. This setup is specifically designed to control developing rotary wing unmanned aerial vehicles. Unmanned aerial vehicle can simulate the basic scenarios during the flight with this system. It ensures that possible situations, such as calibration errors, imbalance in the propulsion system, balance, and determination during the flight, deviation of centre of gravity are observed before the flight. Unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) selection is not an easy decision as many alternatives and criteria must be evaluated at the same time. This selection decision requires the consideration of many different criteria including payload capacity, maximum speed, endurance, altitude, avionics systems, price, economic life, and maximum range. The main aim of this study is to decide the most appropriate UAV by considering these criteria. The fuzzy logic-based fuzzy Choquet integral methodology is used to select this vehicle which allows decision-makers to define references as linguistic and in interval range. A numerical example is presented to analyze the applicability of the proposed approach. The proposed approach resulted in a successful application by comparing different UAVs and the most appropriate vehicle is selected at the final stage. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Quadrotors are well - known unmanned aerial vehicle structures that have some advantages such as hovering, vertical take - off and landing, and low - speed flight. On the other hand, quadrotors are subjected to modeling and sensor uncertainties that lead to erroneous state estimation. Kalman filter has been proven to be the optimal estimator for the Gaussian distributed noise for linear processes. However, linear dynamical models of the quadrotors are not accurate representations of the systems due to nonlinearities, and coupling between the states. Extended Kalman filter (EKF) is proposed to solve the above issue. But, first order Taylor series approximation for the nonlinear state model may lead inefficiencies. For this reason, another Kalman filter framework is proposed that employs unscented transformation (UT). Unscented Kalman filter (UKF), can model the state distribution as Gaussian random variable to the third degree for arbitrary nonlinearities. So, in this study, unscented Kalman filter based estimation scheme is presented to overcome the sensor and model noises for nonlinear quadrotor attitude dynamics. According to the statistical analysis, the approach can estimate and reduce the mean absolute error, root mean square error and also variance of the noise for all attitude states. This study was supported by Eskişehir Technical University Scientific Research Projects Commission under the grant no: 20ADP229. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
