3. A Study of Physicochemical Properties of Stockpile and Ponded Coal Ash

Abstract

The article describes chemical and also selected physical properties of ponded high temperature fly ash (FA) and bottom ash (BA) from a Melnik lignite power plant located in the Czech Republic. The research was carried out on samples obtained from drills with a depth of up to 54 m and the age of the samples retrieved from the lowest layers of the stockpile dating back to 1960. At the same time, a comparison was made with fresh fly ash and fresh bottom ash obtained from the identical power plant. The study analyzed a total of 98 stockpile samples. The properties selected were studied across the entire stockpile, namely moisture content, specific density, specific surface, carbon content, elemental and phase composition, pH, electrical conductivity and leachability. SEM analyses were also performed. The performed measurements of chemical properties proved the chemical stability of the material even after several decades of storage in the stockpile. The largest changes are evident in the results of the analyses related to the leachability of SO3, Cl- and F-. In contrast, the pH does not change significantly, and the composition is pH neutral or alkaline. Regarding ponded BA, particle disintegration was noted depending on the increasing core borehole depth.

4. Comparison of different methods for assessing the pozzolanic activity of fly ash and bottom ash.

Abstract

The work deals with the comparison of pozzolanic activity of selected fly ash (FA) and bottom ash (BA) from lignite power plants in the Czech Republic. Pozzolanic activity was determined by Frattini test, electrical conductivity test and strength activity index (SAI). The results of the Frattini test performed after 8 days according to ČSN EN 196-5 showed that all ashes have pozzolanic activity. In addition, the electrical conductivity test shows significant differences in the reactivity of the ash during the first hours of hydration. SAI was determined on mortars with 25 % ash replacement for cement after 28 days of hydration. The results of pozzolanic activity test methods were compared with each other and the correlations of the methods are discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

This article deals with the characterization of ash produced by biomass combustion (BMA) as well as by co-combustion of coal with biomass (CC-BMA), produced by large power plants in the Czech Republic. Chemical, physical and mechanical properties of the ashes and their mixtures were determined by several test methods, according to the valid legislation. It was found that the properties of BMA and CC-BMA differ significantly. These properties are influenced by the type of material burned, the method of combustion and the place of sampling (fly ash x bottom ash). In addition, it can be concluded, none of the BMA and CC-BMA samples met all the requirements for chemical composition according to EN 450-1 standard method. The relationship between water consumption and the mean particle size of the BMA and CC-BMA was shown. It can be state that the requirement for the initial and final setting time and soundness was met by all pastes according to EN 450-1. None of the sample meets the requirement of the standard in terms of the activity index values which range of 50 – 70 %. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The article outlines the issue of binders based on sulphocalcic fly ash. Verification tests were performed by preparing slurries from sulphocalcic fly ash from various power plants in the Czech Republic. Physical and morphological parameters of fly ash were adjusted to similar values as much as possible. A binder was formed from them by adding water and a plasticizer. The main aim of the experiment part is to determine the differences in chemical, mechanical and physical properties of the binder over time and their morphology and rheology properties.
