Abstract: The electrochemical modification of carbon nanotube films (buckypapers) in three different electrolytes consisting of two acids and a basic solvent at very low concentrations was studied. The electrolysis was performed at 1A up to a maximum of 12h. Four different characterization techniques have been employed for assessing the effectiveness of the proposed process. The results presented are very encouraging for the development of electrochemical oxidation as the main surface modification method for carbon nanotubes. It was found that the use of nitric acid electrolyte leads to scalable and controllable oxidation as compared to the basic electrolyte which was also effective but appeared to damage the graphitic structure of nanotubes during longer treatments. Abstract: It was shown that controlled degradation of poly-[(R)-3-hydroxybutyrate] (PHB) can be achieved by alcoholysis with two types of alcohol in the presence of a catalyst. PHB oligomers terminated with free hydroxyl groups were prepared in this way. Molecular weight of the prepared samples was studied with three methods: SEC analysis with polystyrene calibration, SEC analysis using universal calibration, and viscometry. The data lead to the conclusion that SEC analysis using polystyrene calibration is a suitable method for monitoring degradation. The degradation proceeds by random chain scission and the molecular weight was decreased by almost two orders of magnitude depending on the alcoholysis conditions. The crystallinity and melting temperature, T m, of PHB after alcoholysis, investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) show the independence of crystallinity on molecular weight and a decrease in T m with decreased molecular weight. Time dependence of mechanical properties of selected samples (mechanical ageing) reveals that mechanical properties change with time for degraded samples in a similar way as for the parent polymer. In this paper, diffuse coplanar surface barrier discharge plasma at atmospheric pressure has been used for surface modification of polyester/cotton (PESc) fabric, which was subsequently modified by sol–gel process using suitable organofunctional silanes to enhance its hydrophobicity. Modified PESc fabric surfaces were conditioned during the gelling process to obtain the permanent hydrophobicity. The contact angle of water before washing of plasma and sol–gel pretreated PESc fabric was found to be 154° and 151° after standardized washings. Development of new types of antimicrobial coatings is of utmost importance due to increasing problems with pathogen transmission from various infectious surfaces to human beings. In this study, new types of highly potent antimicrobial polyurethane composite films encapsulated by hydrophobic riboflavin-based carbon polymer dots are presented. Detailed structural, optical, antimicrobial, and cytotoxic investigations of these composites were conducted. Low-power blue light triggered the composites to eradicate Escherichia coli in 30 min, whereas the same effect toward Staphylococcus aureus was reached after 60 min. These composites also show low toxicity against MRC-5 cells. In this way, RF-CPD composites can be used for sterilization of highly touched objects in the healthcare industry. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This publication summarises the current state of knowledge and technology on the possibilities and limitations of using mineral and synthetic fillers in the field of 3D printing of thermoplastics. FDM technology can be perceived as a miniaturised variation of conventional extrusion processing (a microextrusion process). However, scaling the process down has an undoubtful drawback of significantly reducing the extrudate diameter (often by a factor of ≈20–30). Therefore, the results produced under conventional extrusion processing cannot be simply translated to processes run with the application of FDM technology. Low-temperature plasma was used to improve the surface and adhesive properties of wood. The pre-treatment of wood surfaces using radio-frequency (RF) discharge plasma is attractive for various wood applications, mainly because of the high efficiency and low production cost of the process. In addition, a significant increase in the polar component of the wood surface energy, which is associated with the presence of acid–base interactions (electron donor–acceptor bonds), after modification by RF discharge plasma was identified. The treatment of wood by RF plasma exhibited an aging effect, with the modified surface never recovering its initial hydrophobic state. Indeed, the enhancement of the wettability of wood is necessary for promoting better adhesion with water-based adhesives and coatings, which is currently the subject of ongoing study. High-density polyethylene (HDPE)-based hybrid nanocomposites containing graphene nanoplatelets (GnPs) and multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were fabricated using melt mixing followed by compression molding. The influences of size and weight ratio of both carbon-based nanofillers on the electrical, thermal, and mechanical properties of hybrid nanocomposites were evaluated. This study proves that the size and weight ratio of carbon-based nanofillers play a critical role in determining these properties. The optimum size and weight ratio of GnPs and MWCNTs are determined at the maximum achieved enhancement for each property. The HDPE-based nanocomposites containing GnPs with larger surface area and MWCNTs with higher aspect ratio display the highest electrical conductivity at GnPs/MWCNTs weight ratio of 2/3. The combination of GnPs with larger surface area and MWCNTs with lower aspect ratio provides the maximum Young's modulus enhancement of hybrid nanocomposites at 1/4 weight ratio of GnPs and MWCNTs. The nanocomposite containing GnPs with the largest lateral size and MWCNTs with a higher aspect ratio at a 3/2 weight ratio exhibits the highest thermal conductivity. Also, at around the percolation threshold of GnPs, the incorporation of MWCNTs with larger aspect ratio into the HDPE-based nanocomposites containing GnPs with the largest lateral size shows a distinct synergic effect on the thermal conductivity and Young's modulus, while an additive effect on the electrical conductivity and thermal stability. This work is the continuation and refinement of already published communications based on PET/EG nanocomposites prepared by in situ polymerization 1, 2. In this study, nanocomposites based on poly(ethylene terephthalate) with expanded graphite were compared to those with functionalized graphite sheets (GO). The results suggest that the degree of dispersion of nanoparticles in the PET matrix has important effect on the structure and physical properties of the nanocomposites. The existence of graphene sheets nanoparticles enhances the crystallization rate of PET. It has been confirmed that in situ polymerization is the effective method for preparation nanocomposites which can avoid the agglomeration of nanoparticles in polymer matrices and improve the interfacial interaction between nanofiller and polymer matrix. The obtained results have shown also that due to the presence of functional groups on GO surface the interactions with PET matrix can be stronger than in the case of exfoliated graphene (EG) and matrix. Bacterial infection and their resistance to known antibiotics delays wound healing. In this study, nanochitosan dots (nChiD) produced by gamma irradiation have been encapsulated in bacterial cellulose (BC) polymer matrix to study the antibacterial potentials of these nanocomposites and their possible usage in wound healing treatment (scratch assay). Detailed analyses show that nChiDs have disc-like shape and average diameter in the range of 40 to 60 nm depending of the applied dose. All nChiDs as well as BC-nChiD nanocomposites emit green photoluminescence independently on the excitation wavelengths. The new designed nanocomposites do not have a cytotoxic effect; antioxidant analysis shows their moderate radical scavenging activity whereas antibacterial properties show significant growth inhibition of strains mostly found in difficult-to-heal wounds. The obtained results confirm that new designed BC-nChiD nanocomposites might be potential agent in wound healing treatment. Photoactive materials called photosensitizers can be used for treatment of different types of cancer in combination with light source. In this paper, we have investigated pro-oxidant and antioxidant potentials of four graphene based nanomaterials (graphene oxide-GO, graphene quantum dots-GQDs, carbon quantum dots-CQDs and N-doped carbon quantum dots-N-CQDs) depending on the presence/absence of visible light source. Structural and optical properties of these materials and their potentials for reactive oxygen species generation/quenching are investigated by applying different microscopy and spectroscopy techniques (transmission electron microscopy, FTIR, UV–Vis, photoluminescence, electron paramagnetic resonance). Results show that all types of quantum dots has pro-oxidant and antioxidant potentials whereas GO demonstrated only moderate antioxidant effect. The best free radical scavenger is CQDs sample in the absence of light. CQDs are the best singlet oxygen generator under blue light irradiation as well. To check photo-cytotoxicity of these materials, photo-cytotoxic concentrations of the GO, GQDs, CQDs and N-CQDs were determined for three cellular lines: human rhabdomyosarcoma (RD), cell line derived from human cervix carcinoma Hep2c (HeLa) and fibroblast cell line from murine (L2OB). Cytotoxicity test has indicated that all samples are much less photocytotoxic than cis -diamminedichloroplatinum (cis -DPP). The production method and doping of quantum dots affect the photodynamic activity of tested samples very much.
