小惑星探査機「はやぶさ(MUSES-C: Asteroid Sample-return Spacecraft)」は2007年4月から地球帰還のためのイオンエンジンによるΔVを開始した。昨年は太陽輻射圧を利用することで燃料を使わないスピン姿勢制御方式を確立し、太陽追尾を実施した。この方式を踏まえて、イオンエンジン運転時に発生する推力軸周りの外乱トルクと太陽輻射によるトルクを拮抗させて、太陽追尾をする3軸姿勢制御を確立し、地球帰還のためのΔV運用を開始した。本報告では姿勢制御をどのように実施したか飛行結果を交えて述べる。, Hayabusa (MUSES-C: Asteroid Sample-return Spacecraft) spacecraft started the homeward journey with an ion engine driven in April, 2007 aiming at the Earth return. マイクロ波放電式イオンエンジンは、2005年にはやぶさ(MUSES-C: Asteroid Sample-return Spacecraft)探査機を小惑星ランデブーに導いた。探査機は着陸・離陸の際に大きな損傷を受けたが、想定外の運用としてキセノンコールドガスジェットを用いて、復旧を行った。機能残存したリアクションホイール1台とイオンエンジンの推力方向制御、太陽輻射圧トルクを用いた新しい姿勢制御方式を確立し、2007年から帰還運用を開始した。2010年への地球到達を予定している。, The mu 10 cathode-less electron cyclotron resonance ion engines made the Hayabusa (MUSES-C: Asteroid Sample-return Spacecraft) spacecraft rendezvous with the asteroid Itokawa in 2005. Though the spacecraft was seriously damaged after the successful soft-landing and lift-off, the xenon cold gas jets from the ion engines rescued the Hayabusa. New attitude stabilization method using a single reaction wheel, the ion beam jets, and the solar pressure was established and enabled the homeward journey aiming the Earth return on 2010. Under this severe condition, Hayabusa is cruising using its ion engine to get back to the earth in June, 2010. In order to control spacecraft's attitude under only one momentum wheel, Hayabusa has to operate ion engine controlling thrust directions with gimbals continuously, or keep low spin safe-hold. Therefore, it became difficult to make a short ballistic flight for orbit determination among ion engine operations. On the other hand, continuous stable ion engine operation causes less modeling error on ion engine acceleration. This paper studies an orbital maintenance of a satellite with the altitude of about 180 km by the thrust of ion engines. Current earth observation satellites adopt the frozen orbit in which the altitude profile for one orbital period is almost fixed. The drag-free system could cancel the air drag and realize the frozen orbit. The installation of the drag-free system, however, causes a complicated and expensive satellite system. Therefore, we studied different methods and found an excellent orbit in which the mean eccentricity vector was kept constant by only adjusting the thrust of the ion engine in the interval of one orbital period. We call it 'New Frozen Orbit.' Cathode-less ion engines are on the Hayabusa (MUSES-C: Asteroid Sample-return Spacecraft) asteroid explorer, and Kaufman-type engines are on the Engineering Test Satellite-8 (ETS-8: KIKU No.8) at present. A 5 kW-class Hall thruster and a 200 mN-class ion engine are under development. PPTs (Pulsed Plasma Thrusters) and laser micro-thrusters are prepared for the propulsion system of microsatellites. Geostationary satellites need yearly velocity increment of 40 to 50 m/s for the North-Sounth (NS) station keeping. JAXA's recent satellites are adopting low-thrust and high Isp (specific impulse) engines such as DC arc jets and ion engines for the NS station keeping. イオンエンジンの特徴である高比推力を活かすためには、長期間ミッションでの利用が望ましく、すでに多くの静止衛星や探査機において1万時間以上の動作が実証されている。イオンエンジンの寿命を決定する最も重要な要素はイオンを加速する電極部分(グリッド)であり、その長寿命化を目指して様々な努力が為され、上記のような長時間動作が可能となってきた。しかし一方で、研究開発過程における寿命試験も必然的に長期化し、開発期間の長期化および高コスト化の一因となっている。このような状況の中で、寿命試験をサポートできる数値解析ツールを求める声が高まり、日本においても、「イオン加速グリッド耐久認定用数値解析ツール」の研究開発を行うプロジェクト(JIEDIプロジェクト)が具体化し始めた。このようなグリッド耐久性評価用数値解析ツールの開発では、適正な物理モデルおよびアルゴリズムの使用や計算の高速化など、コード開発上の様々な課題を克服する必要があるのに加え、各種実験によるデータ取得も重要となる。グリッド損耗評価における実験の役割としては主に以下の3点が考えられる。(1)数値解析に必要な入力値(各種物性値)の取得、(2)現象確認実験による数値解析モデルの妥当性評価、(3)寿命試験による数値解析結果の妥当性評価。本報告では、これらの3点のうち、主に(1)について概略を示すとともに関連する文献を紹介し、数値解析ツールの開発に必要なグリッド損耗評価試験技術について考察する。ここで紹介する文献は、主にスパッタリング特性に関連する研究報告である。, Experimental support is necessary to develop a grid-life simulation tool with moderate effectiveness and reliability. The ion engines onboard ETS-8 and Hayabusa explorer open the era of electric propulsion. Especially the microwave discharge ion engines mu-10 achieved 26,000-hour space operation and succeeded to rendezvous with an asteroid. These technologies will be expanded to the Deep Space Transportation System and various kinds of satellites. In order to realize such a vast expansion of the ion engines in space the numerical analysis on lifetime of the electro-static grid system, that is JIEDI (JAXA Ion Engine Development Initiatives) tool, has a top priority to develop. 工学実験衛星「はやぶさ」はイオンエンジンによる惑星間飛行を行い、2005年9月に小惑星に到達した。イオンエンジンは従来の化学推進と比べ、推薬消費量が10分の1であり、1週間以上の連続運転が可能である。これにより日本の探査機による深宇宙探査の領域が広がり、日本の宇宙科学が目指す「トップサイエンス」を支える重要な推進系技術であることが示された。このイオンエンジンを使った惑星間軌道計画は従来の化学推進を使ったものとは大きく異なる。「はやぶさ」の軌道計画は連続噴射の単位を1週間として、毎週更新した。「はやぶさ」にとっては推薬、電力だけでなく、時間も重要なリソースの1つであった。このためイオンエンジンの噴射時間を捻出するために3週間おきの軌道決定パスは1ヶ月半おきに延長した。本稿では軌道計画と軌道運用が「イオンエンジンを使った惑星間航行」をどのように実現したか、また、今後のプロジェクトにおいてどう生かすかを述べる。, Hayabusa, which is a technology demonstration spacecraft, was cruising interplanetary orbit using Ion engines. In September 2005, Hayabusa succeeded in arriving at the target asteroid Itokawa. The ion engines are one-tenth of fuel consumption compared with traditional chemical propulsion, and are able to operate continuously more than a week. The technology expanded the area of deep space exploration using Japanese spacecraft, and Hayabusa show that the Ion engine is a key technology for 'Top of Science'. The thrusting time is for a week and is repeated every week. The important resources are not only fuel and electric power but also time for Hayabusa. In order to increase the operation time, the coasting passes for orbit determination was expanded from three weeks to six weeks. Multi-Utility Spacecraft Charging Analysis Tool (MUSCAT) is a software under development by Kyushu Institute of Technology (KIT) jointly with JAXA. Its numerical engine is a plasma simulator based on particle method. It includes both Particle Tracking method (PT), which simulates flux of electric charge into surface of spacecraft, and Particle In Cell method (PIC) which simulates distribution of space plasma. In order to simulate erosion of on ion engine grid system, not only simulating spatial structure of electric potential but also simulating the flux of various particles into grid system is necessary. Therefore, techniques of MUSCAT are applicable for grid simulation by expanding simulation of charged particles to that of particles including neutral particles. 本研究では、3次元粒子シミュレーションコードの開発を行い、中性粒子分布に着目した解析を行った。本コードでは、まず中性粒子分布をDSMC(Direct Simulation Monte Carlo)法により求め、得られた中性粒子分布に対してPIC(Particle In Cell)法によるイオン運動および中性粒子-イオン間の電荷交換解析を行うことによってアクセルグリッドに衝突する電荷交換イオン分布を評価している。電荷交換イオンは中性粒子との衝突により生じるため中性粒子密度分布が重要になってくるが、中性粒子密度分布は流入条件だけでなく壁との反射条件に依存する。本研究では、電気推進機に関するDSMC法を用いた解析において通常用いられる拡散反射条件を適用した場合に加えて鏡面反射条件を用いた場合についても同様な解析を行うことにより、中性粒子解析が損耗評価に与える影響について調べた。本報告では、開発したコードの有効性確認、中性粒子条件の影響評価を目的とし、まずグリッド形状を固定して行った解析結果について報告する。, Lifetime of ion engines is limited by erosion of acceleration channel due to charge-exchange ions. The charge-exchange process is influenced by neutral density distribution. For the purpose of investigating effects of neutral conditions, three-dimensional particle simulations were performed. 日本独自のシステムとして、長寿命・高信頼を特徴とするマイクロ波放電式イオンエンジンが開発され、「はやぶさ」小惑星探査機に応用された。これ以外にも、DCアークジェット、MPD(Magneto Plasma Dynamic)アークジェット、ホールスラスタなど、各種電気推進が研究開発されている。これらは、従来の化学推進より高い噴射速度をもち、効率的な推進剤利用によって宇宙機の長寿命化に貢献する。また、慣性(弾道)飛行していたこれまでの「人工惑星」「人工衛星」とは異なり、電気推進を搭載する宇宙機は、動力航行する能力を持ち、大型ロケットを用いずとも遠方への到達を可能にし、「宇宙船」に分類されるべき新しい技術である。今後立案される深宇宙探査においては、数100kgのペイロードを目的天体へ運ぶ、1トン級の宇宙機の実現が見込まれる。これは、地球表面と近地球を往復する旧来の宇宙輸送系に対して、近地球と深宇宙を結ぶ「深宇宙輸送システム」という新しい概念を導くであろう。, The microwave discharge ion engine mu 10 has long life and high reliability because of electrode-less plasma generation in both the ion generator and the neutralizer. Four mu 10s, each generating a thrust of 8 mN, propelled Hayabusa explorer to asteroid Itokawa. 本稿では主に1999年以降のIEPC(International Electric Propulsion Conference)と2000年以降のAIAA(American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics)ミーティングとジャーナルを中心とした文献調査を行い、各シミュレーション研究のレビューを行なうことを目的としている。Referenceに本稿で対象とした文献一覧を示す。ここに示されたもの以外にも多くの文献が出されているが、同一の著者グループからの一連の論文については、最後のまとめとなる論文1件のみを示している。現在のところ、米国で積極的にこの分野で活動しているグループはJPL(Jet Propulsion Laboratory)、バージニア工科大学、コロラド州立大学、GRC(Glenn Research Center)、ミシガン大学などである。欧州については、IEPCを中心として見る限り、目立った発表が少ない。本稿の第2章では各文献で採用している計算手法および計算結果の検証手法について述べ、第3章ではJAXAで計画されているイオン加速グリッド耐久認定用数値シミュレーションツール開発に向けて必要とされる諸課題について述べる。, A Literature review has been carried out about computational simulation of ion thruster grid region. The computational region consists of upstream discharge plasma, ion beam going through the ion optics grid system and downstream neutralized plasma. Various plasma species exist such as beam ions, charge exchange ions, discharge chamber electrons, neutralizer electrons and others. Literature of the past eight years has been studied intensively. Their methodologies, computational geometries, particle modeling, downstream modeling, Poisson solver and discharge plasma modeling have been compared. This paper provides measurements which may be used to test numerical models of ion extraction using two multiple-hole grids. A grid set, in which an isolated gridlet was embedded in an accelerator grid, was built to measure ion-impingement current distribution. The gridlet comprised both a barrel and downstream electrodes, electrically isolated from each other and the rest of the accelerator grid. The obtained measurements of ion-impingement currents on the electrodes can be directly compared with numerical predictions and they suggest an idea of possible ion flow. イオンエンジンの寿命を制限する要素にはイオン加速グリッドの損耗がある。その耐久認定には、実時間で数万時間級の耐久試験を行うという現状がある。しかし、今後のイオンエンジンを用いたミッションにおいて、耐久性の向上化、長寿命の要求などの進展により、このような長時間試験は現実的ではない。そのため、今後は実時間試験は数千時間級にし、数値寿命予測と合わせた耐久認定方法が提案されている。本研究では、実際に2万時間耐久試験を行ったイオン加速グリッドの損耗形状測定を行い、断面形状特性、周方向角度に対する半径特性について報告をする。, In the development of Ion Engine System, life prediction method by numerical calculation is suggested. A two-year plan for the development of the first stage of the JIEDI tool (JAXA Ion Engine Development Initiative 1, JIEDI-1) is proposed. In order to circumvent the heavy calculation cost associated with the three-dimensional analysis of multiple holes, JIEDI-1 focuses on the analysis of only one pair of grid holes. Aside from some new code developments and related research activities by the workshop members, JAXA will support the grid erosion evaluation code, which was developed by Nakano, for the purpose (1) to share a recipe how to produce a grid erosion code, (2) to evaluate the accuracy of the code, and (3) to check the effect of input parameters such as plasma characteristics, neutral particle density, and sputtering/deposition yield. 本研究では、これらのプログラムコードをイオンエンジン加速グリッドのビーム解析に適用するとともに、その解析に必要な低エネルギーイオンにおけるスパッタリング率をシミュレーションによって評価することを目的とする。本報告では、このスパッタリング解析に向けて、まず始めに、スパッタリングに関する半経験式の紹介、および、イオンエンジン加速グリッド損耗にこれらの式を適用する際の問題点について説明を行う。, The erosion of accelerator grids of an ion engine due to the sputtering of charge-exchange ions is the primary failure mechanism to shorten the life of ion engines. In this report, the semi-empirical formulae for such sputtering are introduced and some problems for the application of these formulae to the analysis of the accelerator grid erosion are discussed. 本研究では、従来から構築してきたコードを基とし、損耗をもたらす粒子として、電荷交換衝突によって生成したイオンと中性粒子、弾性衝突により散乱されたイオンと中性粒子を考慮し、これら粒子によりスパッタされたグリッド材の再付着を含めることで、より忠実な物理モデルを構築するとともに、グリッド形状の変化を反映させて計算を行うことで、より精度が高く、イオンエンジンの開発に使用可能な耐久性能認定用シミュレーションコードを開発することを目標とする。, Improvements have been made to the 3-D ion beam simulation code to enhance the accuracy of the lifetime estimation of ion engine grid optics. The sputter erosion and coating due to the impacts of high-energy ions and neutrals produced by the elastic scattering and charge-exchange reactions were taken into account, and the change in grid surfaces was dynamically simulated. はやぶさ(MUSES-C: Asteroid Sample-return Spacecraft)は2年間の巡航飛行の後、イトカワ近傍で2ヶ月の観測運用を行い、2005年の11月には2回のタッチダウンを実施した。イトカワ到着直前の2005年7月末に3台のうち1台目のホイールを失い、観測運用途中の10月初めに2台目を失った。1台故障時の姿勢制御方式はあらかじめバックアップ制御として姿勢制御系に組み込まれていたが、2台故障に対応するには、搭載系プログラムの1部変更と新規の地上ソフトウェアによる支援が必要であった。本報告では、RW(Reaction Wheel)故障時に実施した対策を、フライトデータをまじえて述べる。, Hayabusa (MUSES-C: Asteroid Sample-return Spacecraft) attempted to touch-down two times in November 2005 after two years of cruising and two months of proximity observation around ITOKAWA. One of three reaction wheels failed in late July 2005, and the second wheel failed in early October. While the attitude stabilization logic with two wheels was inherent in the onboard system, the stabilization with one wheel required the use of onboard re-programming function and special ground support operations. タッチダウン運用終了後、小惑星探査機「はやぶさ(MUSES-C: Asteroid Sample-return Spacecraft)」は燃料リークが原因と思われる外乱により姿勢を喪失し地上との通信リンクが途絶えた。再度ビーコンが受信できるようになった時には、通常姿勢制御に使用するRCS (Reaction Control System)スラスターが使えない状態にあった。はやぶさ運用チームはイオンエンジンの中和器からキセノンガスを噴射することで得られる微弱な推力を使った姿勢制御方式を開発した。これにより探査機の姿勢維持、テレメトリーの復旧、地球/太陽追尾の運用が可能となった。本レポートでは、これらの制御の概要と現在までの運用結果について述べる。, After the completion of the Hayabusa (MUSES-C: Asteroid Sample-return Spacecraft) touchdown operation onto the asteroid Itokawa, the telemetry link with the Earth station was interrupted due to the spacecraft attitude loss, of which reason was thought to be the attitude disturbance by the onboard RCS (Reaction Control System) fuel leak. When the radio beacon was acquired four days after the loss, the spacecraft was in a condition that RCS thrusters normally used for the attitude control were not working. Then, to cope with this circumstance Hayabusa operation team developed the attitude control scheme which utilizes the weak thrust generated by the cold Xenon gas ejection from ion engine neutralizer nozzles. The adopted scheme enabled the attitude control, the telemetry link recover and the Earth/Sun tracking. ETS(Engineering Test Satellite)-3、ETS-4、COMETS(Communications and Broadcasting Engineering Test Satellite)を経て、ETS-8にて静止衛星へ本格的なイオンエンジン利用が始まろうとしています。地球周辺に留まらず、はやぶさ小惑星探査機の深宇宙動力航行により、新しい宇宙観が開拓されました。地上にあっては、次期の宇宙ミッションを睨み、35cmエンジン・μ20・μ10HIspなどへ研究開発努力が費やされています。イオンエンジンのフライトモデル開発に当っては、これまで耐久認定のために実時間で数万時間級の寿命試験を実施してきました。耐久性が向上し、また要求寿命の進展に伴い、このような旧態然とした開発方式では、時機を得た宇宙機の実現がもはや実施不可能になっています。イオンエンジンの数値解析に関する国内研究意欲は旺盛で、これまで世界に広く貢献して参りました。特に、90年台初頭に東京大学で開発されたイオン軌道解析ツールは、隠れた世界スタンダードであり、μ10イオンエンジングリッド開発に深く貢献しました。この国内蓄積に立脚し、電気推進技術をさらに発展させるために、国内の識者・研究者の英知を結集し、JIEDI(JAXA Ion Engine Development Initiatives)ツールの研究開発に着手しました。これは、イオン・オプティクス数学モデルを実作動試験結果により校正した後、数値解析により積算作動数万時間後、または特定の作動履歴後の寿命評価を実施するものです。JIEDI方式耐久認定により、世界競争力のあるイオンエンジン技術を国内に担保し、近宇宙・深宇宙への橋頭保(foothold in space)を確保することができるでしょう。, 資料番号: AA0063157003, レポート番号: JAXA-SP-06-014

イオンエンジンの研究・開発においてシミュレーションが果たしている役割を紹介するとともに、加速グリッド系の損耗評価の研究例を紹介する。イオンエンジンは推進剤をプラズマ化することによりイオンを作り出し、電位差を加えた加速グリッド系にてイオンを高速に噴射することで推進力を得る電気推進機であり、少ない推進剤で効率よく加速できるという指標(比推力)が高いという特徴を有している。加速グリッド系からイオンビームを放出する際には、加速効率のよいグリッド系を構築する必要があるか、この加速系は多数の孔からなる薄い板で構成されており、実験によってグリッド孔径やグリッド間隔、印加電圧を変えてパラメトリックに評価することは現実的かつ効率的な方法ではない。そこでシミュレーションにより加速グリッド系の設計・評価などが行われてきた。本講演の前半部では、それらの例を示しながらシミュレーションの果たした役割について述べる。後半部では、イオンエンジンの加速グリッド系の寿命評価に焦点を当てる。イオンエンジンのグリッドは、高速なイオンの噴射の副産物である遅いイオンや大きな発散角を持ったイオン、また中性粒子の衝突を受け損耗を受ける。それら損耗を評価するためのシミュレーション法と適用例を示す。, 資料番号: AA0063157004, レポート番号: JAXA-SP-06-014

This paper describes the status of the next-generation xenon-ion-engine research at IAT (The Institute of Aerospace Technology). A set of ion extraction grids, which had been pressed improperly in FY2004, was pressed again to obtain the designed shapes after reviewing the pressing process. Another set of ion extraction grids, whose peripheral regions were masked, was manufactured after this. Both results were unsatisfactory and it was finally found that important knowledge had been lost in the pressing process. However, each grid set was tested as a part of an ion thruster. A main cathode continuous operation to confirm the life of an impregnated cathode has begun and is continuing without any symptom of degradation in the cathode. Four neutralizers including two graphite-orifice-plate types were evaluated individually as a part of an ion thruster. The Electron Cyclotron Resonance (ECR) microwave discharge Ion Engine System (IES) onboard Hayabusa has been operated in deep space. IES consists of four pair of ion thrusters and neutralizers on a rectangle shaped gimbals plate. Each engine has an exhaust nozzle of 10 cm in diameter and three grids made of Carbon-Carbon composite material. Weight of 66.2 kg Xenon propellant was loaded in a titanium alloy tank of 51 liter in volume before the launch of Hayabusa in April 2003. ECR microwave discharge generates Xenon plasma, and electric static field of 1,500 volts accelerates Xenon ions to over 30 km/sec exhaust velocity. Each engine generates thrust of 8 mN, specific impulse of 3,200 seconds, and consumes 350 watts of electric power. During the three-year flight operation, IES generated a delta-V of 1,400 m/s while consuming 22 kg Xenon propellant. The total operation time of IES is 25,900 hours. IES successfully propelled Hayabusa to the asteroid Itokawa on September 2005. During the three-month period, in-site activities such as scientific observation of Itokawa and collection of asteroid sample materials were carried out. Now Hayabusa is cruising on the Itokawa orbit waiting for the time of departure. IES is ready to propel Hayabusa back home to the Earth. マイクロ波放電型イオンエンジンの開発に伴い、そのイオン源の解析理論の構築が必要となっている。本研究ではその第1段階として、現在研究開発が進められているμ20のイオン源に対してプローブ計測を行った。μ20のイオン源には、特徴である放電室内の磁場形状や推進剤の供給方法から、周方向の分布が存在する事が予想される。今回のプローブ計測により、内側の磁石列間において周方向の分布が確認された。電子の受けるΔBドリフトの方向に沿って、電子温度の増加とプラズマ密度の減少が見られた。また、推進剤の供給位置を変えた場合に電子温度・プラズマ密度に違いがあることがわかった。これらの結果より、放電室形状を最適にすることでμ20の性能向上が期待できる。, Along with the development of microwave discharge ion engines, it is necessary that a analysis model of the ion sources is developed. As the first stage, probe measurements of the ion source of micro 20, which is under the development now, were done. In the discharge chamber of micro 20, it is expected that a certain circumferential distribution is exist because of the magnetic field and the gas ports in the discharge chamber. In this research, we got the distribution between inside magnet rows, which indicated an increase in electron temperatures and a decrease in plasma densities along the direction of the Delta B drift of electrons. Moreover, it is found that electron temperatures and plasma densities change in two different cases of the locations of the gas ports. Prometheus 1 is a conceptual mission to demonstrate the use of atomic energy for distant space missions. The hypothetical spacecraft design considered in this paper calls for multiple ion thrusters, each with considerably higher beam energy and beam current than have previously flown in space. The engineering challenges posed by such powerful thrusters relate not only to the thrusters themselves, but also to designing the spacecraft to avoid potentially deleterious effects of the thruster plumes. Accommodation of these thrusters requires good prediction of the highest angle portions of the main beam, as well as knowledge of elastically scattered and charge exchange ions, predictions for grid erosion and contamination of surfaces by eroded grid material, and effects of the plasma plume on radio transmissions. Nonlinear interactions of multiple thrusters are also of concern. In this paper we describe two- and three-dimensional calculations for plume structure and effects of conceptual Prometheus 1 ion engines. Many of the techniques used have been validated by application to ground test data for the NSTAR and NEXT ion engines. The microwave discharge ion engines 'micro10s' are devoted to the main propulsion on 'HAYABUSA' asteroid explorer. In the development program various kinds of tests and assessments were applied to the ion engines and the spacecraft; the endurance test, the EMI susceptibility test, the interference test between plasma and communication microwave, the beam exhaust test on the spacecraft, the assessment on plasma interference with solar array, so on. The spacecraft was input in the deep space by M-V rocket on May 9, 2003. After vacuum exposure and several runs of baking for reduction of residual gas the ion engine system established the continuous acceleration of the spacecraft toward the asteroid 'ITOKAWA'. On the beginning of December 2004 the ion engines reached the total number of space operational time 20,000 hour. And the spacecraft passed by the aphelion 1.7 astronautical unit on February 18, 2005 so that the microwave discharge ion engine micro10s became the electric propulsion to arrive at the furthest space from Sun. Simple estimation of the payload performance of orbit transfer vehicles (OTVs) for Space Solar Power System (SSPS) was conducted. In order to reduce the transportation cost in SSPS program, it is important to increase the payload ratio of OTVs so that the transportation requirement for reusable launch vehicles is decreased. In this study, it was suggested that hundreds of OTVs carry the materials separately and SSPS is assembled on geostationary earth orbit. Estimation results indicated that the payload ratios of OTVs were approximately 0.5 in the four cases with types of electric and thermal thrusters used. Mass breakdowns of the OTVs were also shown in the four cases.
