- Abstract
The experiment aimed to explore the effects of Elsholtzia ciliata aqueous extract on the blood tests, serum biochemistry and antioxidant function of heat-stressed mice. Thirty ICR mice were randomly divided into blank group, model group, positive control group, and different dose groups (low, medium and high) of Elsholtzia ciliata aqueous extract. The blank group and model group were administered physiological saline by gavage, the positive control group was given Huoxiangzhengqi oral liquid, and the low, medium, and high dose groups of Elsholtzia ciliata aqueous extract were respectively administered 0.5, 1.0, and 2.0 mL/kg of the extract by gavage, all at a dose of 2 mL/kg BW, once daily for 7 days. After the final administration, heat stress test was conducted by placing the mice in a 40 ℃ constant temperature box for 2 hours to detect the blood routine parameters, serum biochemical parameters, antioxidant-related parameters, and heat shock protein 70 (HSP70) levels. The results showed that compared with the model group, the Elsholtzia ciliata aqueous extract significantly reduced the white blood cell and neutrophil counts of mice under acute heat stress (P<0.05), significantly decreased the levels of serum aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), HSP70, and liver malondialdehyde (MDA) (P<0.05), increased the levels of liver total superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) (P<0.05), with the highest efficacy observed in the high dose group.In conclusion, the water extract of Elsholtzia ciliata aqueous extract can alleviate the increase of inflammatory cells in the blood of mice induced by acute heat stress, improve the liver, kidney, and antioxidant function of heat-stressed mice, reduce the content of serum HSP70, enhance the body's anti-heat stress ability, with the best effect observed in the high dose group of 2.0 mL/kg.
