A series of reforecast experiments using the ensemble prediction system of the Meteorological Research Institute is conducted to reveal the predictability and downward influence of a reflection event of stratospheric planetary waves in February 2014, which recorded the highest level of the downward propagation of the wave activity. The reflection is predictable from at least 7 days in advance. It is found that the skill of forecasts with a prediction period around the predictability limit crucially depends on whether planetary waves are reflected or absorbed in the stratosphere. Composite analyses also reveal that the persistence of the tropospheric wave source in the eastern hemisphere is a key in determining the propagating property of stratospheric planetary waves. When the reflection occurs in association with a weak persistence of the wave source, the subsequent downward propagating wave from the stratosphere enforces anomalous tropospheric circulation in the western hemisphere.

Predictability characteristics of the wintertime stratospheric polar vortex are examined through the systematic error and the ensemble spread of the predicted north polar temperature by the operational 1-month ensemble forecast of the Japan Meteorological Agency during 7 winters. It is revealed that in early winter, the systematic error has significantly large positive values due to the underestimation of the equatorward propagation of planetary waves in the stratosphere. The estimated predictable period based on the ensemble spread according to Lorenz (1982) attains a maximum in early winter (more than 30 days) and gradually decreases with the seasonal march.

近年の観測的研究によって，成層圏から対流圏へ下方伝播するプラネタリー波が異常気象の発生に重要な役割を果たしていることが明らかになった。ここでは，JRA-25/JCDAS再解析データと気象庁より提供された1ヶ月アンサンブル予報データを用いて，プラネタリー波の下方伝播が生じるときの，帯状風構造の特徴について詳しい解析を行った。その結果，下方伝播が生じるときの帯状風構造は，成層圏上層の西風鉛直シアーの大きさと，成層圏中層の西風の強さによって3つのタイプに分類できることがわかった。また，これらの帯状風構造について，成層圏における反射面の存在がプラネタリー波の下方伝播と関連していることがわかった。, Recent observational studies have revealed an important role of downward propagation of planetary waves from the stratosphere for the occurrence of anomalous weather. In this study, the meridional profile of zonal-mean zonal winds which is preferable for the downward propagation of planetary waves is examined using JRA-25/JCDAS dataset and 1-month ensemble forecast dataset provided by the Japan Meteorological Agency. It is found that the meridional profile is classified into three groups by the strength of westerly shear in the upper stratosphere and zonal-mean zonal winds in the middle stratosphere. It is also revealed that the existence of the reflection surface in the stratosphere is related to the downward propagation of planetary waves for these three groups.

The third flight experiment of BSMILES was conducted on September 4, 2006 to observe diurnal variation of HO2. BSMILES carries an offset parabolic maim reflector with a diameter of 300 mm, a 630 GHz-band SIS (Semiconductor Insulator Semiconductor) mixer cooled by liquid helium, an acousto-optical spectrometer, and three-axes fiber-optic gyroscope. The gondola was lifted to an altitude of about 37.9 km by a balloon of 200,000 cu m in volume. The system operated properly and emission line spectra of O3 and minor constituents were measured. Launching a large balloon at a limited launching field is a long standing subject in Japan. The volume of the largest balloon ever launched successfully was 200,000 cubic meters. This type of balloon was firstly launched in 1973. A larger balloon with a volume of 500,000 cubic meters was tried to launch in 1980; however it did not succeed because of burst during the ascending phase. For launching a large balloon with a total lift more than 1 ton, the static launching method, we have used for more than 20 years, has several weak points that may result in failure. We developed a semi-dynamic launching method using a new launcher, which is fixed on the ground and has a freedom of rotation around the vertical axis and an elevation system up to 5 m, as well as a leap-up spooler system for holding a balloon bubble, in 1999. We have launched several balloons using the method. In 2003, a balloon with a volume of 500,000 cubic meters, which was made of polyethylene films of 20 micrometers in thickness, was successfully launched with the semi-dynamic launching method. 第45次南極地域観測隊行動の一環として、南極昭和基地においてクライオジェニックサンプラー回収気球実験が実施された。実験は2回実施され、2003年12月26日と2004年1月5日にそれぞれ気球が放球され、高度10kmから30kmにおいて成層圏の大気サンプルを採取することに成功した。大気サンプルの採取が終了した後、観測器はパラシュートによって海氷上に着地し、無事にヘリコプターで回収された。日本に持帰った後にサンプル容器の内圧を計測したところ、採取された成層圏大気サンプルの量は、9〜18L(STP)であり、さまざまな大気成分の分析をするために十分な量のサンプルが得られていた。今後進められる分析の結果を、1998年の実験結果と比較することにより、南極成層圏における大気成分の長期変動などが明らかにされるものと期待される。, Balloon-borne cryogenic samplers were launched from Japanese Antarctic Station, Syowa, on December 26, 2003 and January 5, 2004 by the 45th Japanese Antarctic Research Expedition team. Stratospheric air samples were successfully collected at 11 different altitudes from 10 to 30 km. After air sampling, the cryogenic samplers descended using a parachute and landed safely on sea ice near the station, and then they were recovered by using a helicopter. By measuring the pressures of air samples collected, it was found that their amounts were 9 to 18 L(sub STP), which are enough to analyze many atmospheric components. 音響光学素子を用いて、太陽吸光法により成層圏の大気微量成分を測定するための新しい分光器を開発した。分光器の主な構成は、音響光学素子、音響光学素子に印加する高周波を作る高周波発信機そして光検出器としての光電子増倍管である。重量は4.0kg、消費電力は5.0Wである。本分光器の分光波長範囲は410〜460nm、波長分解能は0.85nmである。2002年9月12日三陸大気球観測所において、本観測器を搭載し成層圏NO2を観測する気球実験が行われた。実験は成功し、解析の結果、高度30kmで3.0x10(exp 9)cm(sup -3)のNO2密度ピークがあることがわかった。この結果は衛星UARSに搭載されているHALOEによって本実験の10日後に観測されたNO2高度分布と非常に良く一致していることがわかった。, A spectrometer has been developed that uses an acousto-optic tunable filter (AOTF) to measure minor constituents of troposphere and stratosphere by sun light absorption. The spectrometer consists of an AOTF, an RF generator to drive the AOTF and a photomultiplier to detect the light selected with AOTF. The weight of the instrument is 4.0 kg and power consumption is 7.0 W. A wavelength range to be scanned by spectrometer is 410 to 460 nm, and resolution of wavelength is 0.85 nm. A balloon (BT5-21) which accommodates the newly developed instrument was launched to measure NO2 at Sanriku Balloon Center on September 12, 2002. The results that was obtained successfully showed that height of NO2 maximum is 30 km and NO2 maximum density is 3.0 x 10(exp 9) cm(sup -3). 1989年に初めてその映像が得られて以来[Franzeta et al., 1990]、雷放電に伴った高高度における大気発光現象の研究は、観測と理論、モデリングの面から進められてきた。これまでに明らかになっている発光現象として、20〜50kmの成層圏に出現するブルー・ジェットおよびブルースターター、50〜90kmの中間圏に出現するスプライト、90〜100kmの下部電離圏に出現するエルブスがある。衛星観測はこれらの現象の全球分布とその時間変化や、地上からは観測されない紫外線領域のスペクトル情報などを得る上で大きな利点があるが、過去に実施されているのはスペースシャトルからの短期間の撮像のみである。そこで、小型衛星を利用して、広域のスプライト・雷の発生分布を撮像する光学観測器を考案した。この観測器は発光の全球分布をスナップショットで撮像する以外に、スプライトによって生成されると予測されているNO分子の発光や、液晶可変フィルターを用いたスペクトル観測の実施も考えている。, 資料番号: AA0045441093

上部成層圏オゾンの現場観測を目的として薄型高高度気球搭載用光学オゾンゾンデを1993年に開発した。以来, 1999年まで宇宙科学研究所三陸大気球観測所で毎年観測を行ってきた。1994年から1998年にはスヴァールバル諸島に於いても観測を行った。高高度気球搭載光学オゾンゾンデは約1kmの高度方向の分解能を有する。特に上部成層圏の30km以上, 気球到達高度42kmまでの高度範囲でこれほど細かい高度分解能でオゾン高度分布を観測する手段はこれまで無かった。これによって, 上部成層圏のオゾン高度分布の数kmスケールの構造が観測できるようになった。, We developed an optical ozone sonde on board a thin-film high-altitude balloon for an in situ measurement of the upper stratospheric ozone in 1993. Since then, observations using developed balloon-borne optical ozone sondes were performed at Sanriku Balloon Center every year until 1999. From 1994 to 1998,observations at Svalbard in the Arctic were also performed. The balloon-borne optical ozone sondes measure the intensity of solar radiation at ozone Hartley band absorption at every 30-40m in the vertical. Due to a smoothing procedure used for data analysis, the vertical resolution of obtained ozone profiles are limited to 1km. A feasibility study for recovering a sampler was made by using the last 10 years of aerological data obtained at the station. We have confirmed that the experiment would be possible to achieve. Preliminary experiments were made every summer between 1995 and 1997 at the station using small rubber balloons and simple payloads such as radio buoys and grab samplers. All the payloads landed on the sea ice or the antarctic continent and recovered by helicopters. Development of a cryogenic air sampler, a telemeter system of the sampler, and a communication system between Japan and the station have also been made. Test flights of the newly developed sampler were successfully made at Sanriku, Japan and Kiruna, Sweden in 1996 and 1997,respectively. The cryogenic air sampling experiment was performed on January 3,1998 at the station using a large balloon. Air samples were collected between 10 and 30km. The sampler landed in Lut zow-Holm Bay and recovered by the ice breaker "Shirase" on January 6. クライオサンプリング装置を大気球に搭載し, 1985年から1995年までの期間, 日本上空において成層圏空気の採集を実施した。得られた試料空気を分析することにより, 温室効果気体として重要なCO_2,CH_4,N_2Oの濃度およびCH_4のδ^Cの鉛直分布を明らかにした。CO_2濃度は, 圏界面付近から20∿25km以上の等濃度層まで, 高度と共に急速に低下し, その差は4∿8ppmvであった。しかし, CO_2濃度が減少する層や等濃度となる高度は一定しておらず, その原因は, 成層圏下部での極側への大気輸送が年や季節によって異なること, あるいはジェット気流付近での大気の鉛直混合にあると考えられる。等濃度層におけるCO_2濃度は年々増加しており, その平均的な増加率は1.50 (±0.04)ppmv/yearであった。CH_4およびN_2Oの濃度は, 成層圏での活発な消滅のために, 圏界面直上のおよそ1750ppbvおよび311ppbvから35km付近の550∿900および30∿70ppbvまで, 高度と共に急激に減少していた。CH_4のδ^Cは, CH_4濃度の減少とあいまって, 圏界面直上の約-47‰から35kmでの約-39‰へと高度と共に急激に増加していた。観測されたδ^Cの鉛直分布は, 主にCl原子との消滅反応に起因するものと考えられた。, Stratospheric air samples have been collected over Japan during the period from 1985 to 1995 using a balloon-borne cryogenic sampler, and then analyzed for the CO_2,CH_4 and N_2O concentrations and the carbon isotopic ratio of CH_4. The results showed that the CO_2 concentration decreased with height in an interval from the tropopause to 20-25km, and then became almost constant values above this level. The concentration differences between the lowermost part of the stratosphere and heights above 20-25km amounted to 4-8 ppmv. The lower stratospheric CO_2 showed different profiles for different measurements, probably due to annually- and seasonally-dependent poleward air transport and vertical mixing of stratospheric air near the jet stream. An average increase rate of the stratospheric CO_2 concentration was estimated to be 1.50 (±0.04) ppmv/year from the data above 20-25km. The CH_4 and N_2O concentrations decreased rapidly from about 1750 and 311 ppbv at the tropopause to 550-900 and 30-70 ppbv at 35km, respectively, due to their strong destruction through photolysis and chemical reactions. δ^C value of CH_4 increased markedly with height, from -47‰ just above the tropopause to about -39‰ at 35km, which is quite opposite to the vertical profile of the CH_4 concentration. It was strongly suggested that the destruction of CH_4 by the reaction with Cl atoms is responsible for this steep vertical profile of δ^C., 資料番号: SA0167086000
