Beginning in the 1870s, Taiwan’s mountain forests became a contested battleground between indigenous peoples and colonizers. At issue was the production of camphor, a crystalline substance derived from the cinnamomum camphora tree. Central to the expansion of imperial control in this strategic zone of resource extraction was the concept of indigenous Taiwanese as “savage.” Both Qing and Japanese colonizers employed this concept at great lengths to craft assimilation programs, and to carry out punishing military assaults. This essay revisits the figure of the savage and how it shaped the structures of late Qing and Japanese colonial governance in the Taiwan highlands. 本資料は，京都大学が保管する琉球民族遺骨の返還を求める集団訴訟で，京都地裁に提出した意見書である。本意見書は，まず人骨研究を中心とする近代人類学の系譜を整理したうえで，京都大国大学の人類学者が統計学的な手法を駆使しながら集団的に人骨研究を進めたことを明らかにした。そのうえで京都帝大の人類学者による琉球遺骨の収集には，解剖学教室の金関丈夫によるもの(1929年)と病理学教室(清野謙次人類学研究室)の三宅宗悦によるもの(1933年)の2系統があり，前者は台北帝国大学に移管され，後者が京都帝大に残されたことを論証した。最後に，人骨収集の態度において，本州・四国・九州における慎重さと，南島における手軽さが対照的であったことを示し，植民地状況においては「純粋」な科学的研究に対する法的・倫理的な歯止めが働かなくなったという意味で，それを「植民地主義的ダブルスタンダード」と呼んだ。, This is an opinion paper which I submitted to the Kyoto District Courts regarding a trial over a claim for the restitution of the Ryukyuan human remains held in Kyoto University. First, tracing a genealogy of modern anthropological studies of human bones, I argue that the anthropologists in Kyoto Imperial University were characterized by a strong concern for the extensive collection of human remains for advanced statistical analyses. Second, I demonstrate that the Ryukyuan human remains in Kyoto Imperial University were collected by two anthropologists, Kanaseki Takeo in the Anatomy Laboratory in 1929 and Miyake Soetsu in the Pathology Laboratory in 1933, and that only the bones collected by the latter have been kept in Kyoto University because the former ones were transferred to Taipei Imperial University before 1945. Lastly, contrasting the "ease" with which human remains were collected in the southern islands with the care taken in Honshu, Shikoku and Kyushu, I describe their approach as a "colonial double standard" in which laws and ethics were not observed in the pursuit of "pure" scientific activity., 資料(Material)

Résumé : La Corée colonisée (1905‑1945) vit se déployer sous l’égide du Japon des savoirs visant à la compréhension de la société de la « péninsule », dans un objectif à la fois académique mais aussi de légitimation du pouvoir japonais. Au sein de ce dispositif, la question de la saisie, de la compréhension et du classement des corps – qui avait d’abord constitué une obsession nationale au Japon comme en Europe – s’imposa comme l’une des grandes préoccupations des savants coloniaux. Ainsi les trois chaires d’anatomie de l’université impériale de Keijō (Seoul), fondée en 1924, incluaient-elles deux chaires d’anthropologie physique, une configuration inédite au sein des universités d’État japonaises. Ses responsables s’efforcèrent de démontrer la validité de la théorie des « origines communes entre Japonais et Coréens » au moyen de la biologie, théorie qui avait servi depuis 1910 à légitimer l’annexion par une « proximité de race » entre conquérants et conquis. Cependant, l’entre-deux-guerres allait voir la montée d’un discours ethniciste porté par le nouveau courant eugéniste, qui s’opposait à tout rapprochement entre le « peuple japonais » saisi comme pur et les populations colonisées. La seconde moitié des années 1930 et la période de guerre virent un affrontement entre deux visions opposées du Japon, entre empire ou peuple réethnicisé. Abstract: Colonial Korea (1905‑1945) was the locus of numerous studies, under the supervision of members of the Japanese scientific community, which aimed at better understanding the “peninsula’s” society; their goals were academic as well as political, as they tried to justify Japan’s colonial domination. Within this scope of colonial knowledge, the grasping, understanding and classifying of bodies—an issue which had obsessed Japanese as well as European societies—constituted one of the main focus of the colonial researchers. Thus, the three chairs in physical anthropology of the Keijō Imperial University, founded in 1924 in Seoul, included two professorships in physical anthropology, a unique configuration within the Japanese state universities of the time. The professors in charge attempted to demonstrate, with the help of biology, the veracity of the “Japanese-Korean Common Origins” hypothesis, which has been used to justify the annexation of Korea to Japan in 1910 by arguing that Conquerors and Conquered were “racially akin”. However, a new trend, eugenics, began to develop an ethnicist and nativist discourse during the interwar period, in order to thwart any attempt to draw together the “Japanese people”—assumed to be “racially pure”—and the colonized peoples. The second half of the 1930s thus saw the development of an antagonism between two opposite visions of Japan, that of an Empire or a racially-defined people.

本稿は、戦前ドイツにおける「熱帯医学」の歴史をたどりながら、それが依拠した近代細菌学の方法論とその限界、さらには植民地主義との関係について考察するものである。一九世紀末の顕微鏡の改良は、細菌学の飛躍的発展をもたらした。当時ヨーロッパ各国は世界中で植民地統治を行なっており、住民の健康維持に大きな関心を寄せていた。細菌学は、自国民と現地住民双方にとって「文明の恩恵」になると期待された。ドイツでも世紀転換期にベルリンやハンブルクに「熱帯医学」の研究拠点が整う。しかし植民地で展開される「帝国医療」はその期待に充分応えられなかった。本論ではなぜ細菌学的手法が失敗し、さらに第一次世界大戦後のドイツで「熱帯医学」はどのような展開をみせたのかを分析した。その結果「熱帯医学」の知見や思考法が植民地喪失後のドイツでも重要な役割を果たしており、今後もその過去との取り組みがドイツ史研究に必要であるとの結論に達した。, In der vorliegenden Arbeit geht es vor allem darum, den historischen Sachverhalt der Entstehung sowie der Institutionalisierung der deutschen „Tropenmedizin" oder der im Rahmen des deutschen Kolonialismus bzw. Expansionismus entfalteten „Imperialmedizin" seit dem Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts darzustellen und darüber hinaus zu erörtern, wie sich die deutschen Mediziner vor dem Zweiten Weltkrieg nicht nur in ihrem Heimatland, sondern auch in den ehemaligen Kolonien mit der Bekämpfung der Infektionskrankheiten beschäftigten. Dank des technischen Fortschrittes der Mikroskopie entwickelte sich die moderne Bakteriologie um die vorletzte Jahrhundertwende sehr rasch zu einer selbständigen medizinischen Disziplin. Deren wissenschaftliche Methode, die Ursache der Krankheiten, unabhängig von den Umweltmechanismen, in denen sich die Kranken befanden, aber auch von deren körperlichen Eigenschaften, die man oft als „Rassenmerkmale" betrachtete, ausschließlich auf winzige Krankheitserreger (Mikroben, Bakterien oder Viren) zurückzuführen, ermöglichte den Medizinern Europas die Vereinfachung der Erkrankungsprozesse und auch eine deutliche gesundheitspolitische Zielsetzung vor allem in den überseeischen Kolonien, wo sich die Deutschen täglich einem „ungewohnten Klima" ausgesetzt und mit „fremden Rassen" konfrontiert sahen. Dies führte dazu, dass die Kolonialärzte Deutschlands, dem prominenten Wegbereiter der „Mikrobenjagd" Robert Koch (1843-1910) folgend, sowohl die bis zu jener Zeit vorherrschende „Miasmentheorie", wobei man davon ausgeht, dass die Verbreitung der Krankheit der „üblen Luft (Miasma)" zuzuschreiben sei, als auch den biologisch-medizinischen Rassismus, der die Anpassungsfähigkeit oder sogar die Überlebenschance der „weißen Rasse" in den Tropen in Frage stellte, abzulehnen versuchten. Die Bakteriologen waren der Ansicht, eine komplette Beseitigung aller „Tropenkrankheiten" sei nicht unmöglich, falls es ihnen gelinge, die Krankheitserreger sowie die richtigen Arzneimittel herauszufinden. Dies sei ein „Segen der (europäischen) Zivilisation", der den „Weißen" aber auch den „Farbigen" in den Kolonien erteilt werden solle. Es war gerade 1900, dass das „Institut für Schiffs- und Tropenkrankheiten" in Hamburg eröffnet wurde, und damit spielte die Hansestadt neben Berlin, wo Koch sein Institut besaß, für die Erforschung der Infektionskrankheiten eine wesentliche Rolle spielte. Anders als erwartet war jedoch die deutsche „Tropenmedizin" nicht in der Lage, gegen alle Infektionskrankheiten eine entscheidende Wirkung zu zeigen. Sie konnte z.B. bei der Bekämpfung der tropischen Malaria zwar schon in der deutschen Kolonialzeit (1884-1918/19) die Erkrankungs- sowie Ansteckungsprozesse, aber auch die Behandlungsmethode mit Chinin aufklären, doch die gesundheitspolitischen Maßnahmen gegen diese Krankheit schlug wegen des Finanzmangels fehl. Oder die Schlafkrankheit (afrikanische Trypanosomiasis) schädigte trotz wiederholter gesundheitspolitischer Eingriffe der Kolonialverwaltung ins Alltagsleben der Afrikaner immer weiter deren Gesundheit, denn der Versuch, Wirkungstoffe gegen die Krankheit herzustellen, war stets ohne Erfolg. Letztlich blieb den Medizinern hinsichtlich der einheimischen Leprakranken keine andere Wahl übrig, als sie von ihrer Familie zu isolieren, was selbstverständlich ihre Empörung hervorrief und deswegen bald eingestellt wurde. Wegen des Verlustes im Ersten Weltkrieg und des darauffolgenden Abschlusses des Versailler Friedensvertrags kam die deutsche Kolonialherrschaft zu einem plötzlichen Ende. Dies bedeutete jedoch nicht etwa einen Stillstand der tropenmedizinischen Forschungen des Landes; das Pharmaunternehmen Bayer hatte schon während des Krieges ein neues, arsenfreies Arzneimittel gegen Schlafkrankheit („Bayer 205") hergestellt, und wegen der positiven Behandlungsergebnisse ein großes Interesse im Kreis der internationalen Ärzteschaft erweckte. Um die Heilungskraft des „Bayer 205" klinisch zu bestätigen, erteilte sogar Großbritannien den deutschen „Tropenmedizinern" schon in den 1920er Jahren die Aufenthaltserlaubnis in den afrikanischen Gebieten, die einst zum Deutschen Kaiserreich gehört hatten, aber deren Betreten den alten „Kolonialherrn" nach dem Krieg strikt untersagt war. Unter denjenigen Ärzten, die in der Zwischenkriegszeit Afrika bereisen durften, ist der ehemalige Stabsarzt Friedrich Karl Kleine (1869-1951) zu nennen: Als Nachfolger Robert Kochs übernahm Kleine die Bekämpfung der Schlafkrankheit in Deutsch-Ostafrika. Dank seiner Karriere als Kolonialarzt hatte er enge Konnexionen mit den britischen Medizinern, was ihm ermöglichte, sich mit der Erforschung der Trypanosomenkrankheit weiter bis zum Vorabend des Zweiten Weltkriegs in Afrika zu beschäftigen und nach dessen Beendigung nach Kapstadt umzusiedeln. Während Kleine den mikrobiologischen Prinzipien Robert Kochs eher treu blieb, nahm der ehemalige Kolonialarzt Ernst Rodenwaldt (1878-1965) angesichts der obengenannten Grenze der modernen Bakteriologie frühzeitig davon Abstand, die Ursache der Krankheit nur in deren Erregern zu suchen. Stattdessen bemühte er sich darum, das Auftreten der Krankheitserscheinungen auf die körperliche Beschaffenheit der Erkrankten zu beziehen. Er behauptete, dass die Empfindlichkeit gegen die eine oder andere Infektionskrankheit in einem engen Zusammenhang mit den „rassischen Eigenschaften" einzelner Körper stehe. Auf diese Weise brachte Rodenwaldt die von Koch weggelassene Problematik der „Menschenrasse" nochmals in den Bereich der modernen Bakteriologie, was ihm 1935 den Weg zur Professur für Rassenhygiene an der Universität Heidelberg bahnte. Sein Konzept „Geomedizin", die, durch die „Geopolitik" Karl Haushofers inspiriert, die Verbreitung oder das Ausbleiben der Infektionskrankheiten als Kampf unter Menschen verschiedener „Rassen" zu betrachten versuchte, wurde vom Nationalsozialismus zum Zweck der Rechtfertigung seiner Expansionspolitik ausgenutzt. Aus der oben ausgeführten Geschichte der deutschen Tropenmedizin geht hervor, dass die Kolonialerbe Deutschlands auch in der nachkolonialen Zeit eine nicht kleine Bedeutung besaß, obwohl sich die deutschen Historiker mit ihr nicht genug auseinandersetzen wollen. In diesem Sinne ist die koloniale Vergangenheit auch heute noch zu bewältigen.

台湾において, アフリカやアジアにおける他の植民地帝国と同様, 日本統治期50年間にわたり, いわゆる「原住民」とその社会に関する膨大な人類学的調査が実施された。帝国日本の他の版図と比較すると, 台湾における人類学研究はより大きな地位を占めた。同地での植民地人類学は主に, 漢族系台湾人ではなく, オーストロネシア語系の台湾先住民族を調査し, 植民地当局の言う「原住民」こそが土着の台湾人であると考えたのである。本稿の主要課題は, 台湾先住民族に関する植民地学知を総合的に取り扱いながら, 日本の植民地人類学者らが台湾先住民族をいかに捉えたか, 台湾総督府がこの一連の表象をいかに再生産したか, さらに, こうした表象が独立後もいかに内面化され, いかに存続しているかを明らかにすることにある。連綿と続く単一的な国民観・民族観は今日の人文社会科学によって解体され, 国民というアイデンティティは構築されたものとして把握・批判されているが, 少数民族のアイデンティティは従来通り自然視されている。19世紀に形成された国民国家・植民地主義という近代パラダイムの中で考察され続けていることが, 現在の人類学や人類学者による「人類学史」の限界であろう。台湾山岳の先住民族に対する植民地言説と実践を歴史的に検討することは, 植民地科学の一側面を照らすだけでなく, 植民地主義とアイデンティティの形成というより広義なグローバルヒストリーという課題に貢献できよう。, The fifty years of Japanese colonial rule in Taiwan, between 1895 and 1945, sawmassive field surveys of colonial society and "aborigine" populations, similar to other contemporary colonial empires in Africa and Asia. Anthropology occupied a centrality reached in no other Japanese colony. She focused on these many indigenous minorities of Austronesian languages who lived in Taiwan, alongside the Han Chinese communities, to affirm these groups, which were referred to as "aborigines", as the only true Taiwanese. The central question of this article, which will summarize Japanese colonial intelligence towards indigenous populations, concerns the way in which Japanese colonial anthropologists apprehended the indigenous populations of Taiwan, the reproduction by the colonial power of these representations, and finally their internalization and perpetuation in post-colonial era. At a time when, today, social sciences are deconstructing the idea of nations as continuous and homogeneous communities, the identity of ethnic minorities remains perceived as a natural fact and is still grasped within the 19th century paradigm of national and colonial modernity. 本研究ノートでは, 明治時代の地理科目の教科書にみられる「人種」「民族」「種」および日本帝国内のマイノリティ集団に関する記述を時代系列にしたがって検証する。現在でも日本の一部の教科書や事典などにおいて使用され続けている「コーカソイド」「モンゴロイド」や「白色人種」「黄色人種」「黒色人種」という人類の分類方法は, 19世紀江戸後期から明治初期にかけて科学知として日本に導入されたものである。前者はドイツ人のヨハン・F・ブルーメンバッハが, 後者はフランス人のジョルジュ・キュヴィエが発案した人種区分であった。皮膚の色など可視的な身体形質で人類を分類する「人種」という新しい概念が, ヨーロッパやアメリカから日本に越境し, 変容を見せながら定着することになった。初期は, 海外の教科書を翻訳したものが主を占め, 白人をヒエラルキーの頂点においたが, それらのなかには次第に日本の国民国家と帝国形成のなかで, その分類方法や意味づけを大きく変え, 日本人(大和民族)をヨーロッパ人種と同等に優れていると位置付けるものも現れた。「人種」と, それと不可分な関係をもつ「民族」は, 日本の文明開化, 「脱亜入欧」, その後のアジアにおける帝国支配において, 内政においても対外政策においても重要な役割を果たしていた。, This paper will examine the descriptions in geography textbooks of "jinshu, " "minzoku, " "shu, " and minoritized groups in Imperial Japan during the Meiji Period (1868-1912). The terminology such as "Caucasoid, " "Mongoloid, " and "Negroid, " or "White Race, " "Yellow Race, " and "Black Race, " which are still used in some school textbooks and encyclopedias, was introduced to Japan during the late Edo and the early Meiji periods. The former categories trace their origin to Johan F. Blumenbach, a German anthropologist, and the latter division was invented by Georges Cuvie, a French naturalist.While in the early Meiji period, most descriptions heavily relied on textbooks used in Europe and the United States, as Japan advanced its nation-building and Empire formation, new interpretations and descriptions that positioned Japanese as equally superior as the European Race came to appear in some textbooks. One of the most important battlefields of the Russo-Japanese War (1904– 1905) was 203-Meter Hill. Located in the city of Lushun on the tip of the Liaodong Peninsula, 203-Meter Hill also became one of the most important and contested places of memory in the Japanese empire. This article explores the production of collective memories at 203-Meter Hill. It does so from the perspective of Japanese and Korean travelers from the very first student tours in 1906 to the late 1930s. It pays particular attention to how changes in territory and ideology produced changes in commemorative practices. It argues that the history of 203-Meter Hill as a site for producing Japanese national identity is only one part of the battlefield’s story. Reading the accounts of Korean travelers alongside those of Japanese travelers, the article shows that the site produced powerful senses of Korean national identity as much as it did Japanese ones.

西欧植民地主義勢力は周辺国の植民地化がコスト高だと判断した場合、その主権国家化を支援した。ただし、そのような国家形成は、植民地化された国と同様にその周辺国の国家と社会との亀裂を内在化させた。タイの国家形成史はまさにこのケースに当てはまる。タイは、19世紀中期から20世紀初頭まで、英仏がバンコク王朝の宗主権を侵食しつつビルマ、マレー、インドシナを植民地化し、他方でバンコク王朝はその結果、領域主権国家としての境界を画定していった。その結果、タイ国家はとくにイギリスの支援を受けながら主権国家としての国家機構を構築した。この過程で他の政治勢力に対して圧倒的な力をもつ国家エリートがバンコクを中心に構築される一方で、地方エリート勢力は解体され、また地方エリートと民衆の関係が解体していった。さらに、1930年代から40年代にかけて、新興の国家官僚層は、英仏植民地主義体制が不安定化すると、南進政策をとる日本に接近し、領域主権国家としての強化を試みた。

第1次日韓国交正常化交渉での在日朝鮮人の法的地位および処遇についての議論は、植民地主義,分断,冷戦が織りこまれたものだといえる。とりわけ在日朝鮮人の退去強制を進めようとする日本政府の植民地主義が突出していた。これに対して当事者である在日朝鮮人は、居住権や生活権を根底から否定する退去強制に最も脅威を感じ、退去強制をめざす日本政府の姿勢を厳しく批判していた。それは過去の植民地支配の経験に裏付けられたものだった。, Discussions about the legal status and treatment of Koreans living in Japan in the first round of negotiations for the normalization of diplomatic relations between Japan and the Republic of Korea incorporated the aspects of colonialism, division and the Cold War. Among these, the Japanese government's colonialist approach of attempting to deport Koreans living in Japan stood out in particular. On the other hand, Koreans living in Japan who would be affected by the negotiations felt most threatened by the possibility of deportation, which would completely deny their rights of residence and subsistence, and fiercely criticized the Japanese government's attitude to pursue deportation. 日本基督教会は、1904年釜山より在朝日本人を対象にして朝鮮伝道を開始した。伝道は在朝日本人が多い町を中心に進展して、1915年朝鮮中会が建設された。植民地における教会として営みに困難があったものの、教勢は1930年まで8独立教会、4伝道教会、4伝道所、会員は2,000名近く伸びた。朝鮮の3.1独立運動の際には、相対的に日本帝国の無断統治を批判したこともあったが、在朝日本人教会の信徒はそもそも植民地支配の支配層であり、その政策の実行者であった。, The Church of Christ in Japan (CCJ) inaugurated the Korea mission at Pusan in 1904, mainly for the Japanese in colonial Korea. They expanded their mission to the cities where Japanese towns are located. They could establish “Chosen Presbytery” in 1915. Located in alien colony, they had difficulties in managing churches. However, they could increase to 8 self-supported, 4 half-supported and 4 dependent churches with almost 2000 members by 1930. During the 3.1 Independence Movement in 1919, the CCJ in Korea criticized the Japanese military rule, which was very limited though. This paper discusses how colonialism still exists in the present day through a case study of the US military base on Diego Garcia which has become a “good model” of base politics. I conducted the discussion from three perspectives. Firstly, how the US military bases and its network were created abroad. Secondly, why host countries of US military base, such as the UK, allow their territory to be used for bases. Thirdly, how the UK security policy affects the Chagos people’s movement for returning to their homeland, who are not opposed to the US military base on Diego Garcia.

朝鮮におけるミッションの高等教育の発展を、東アジア諸国との比較史的視点を採り込み、朝鮮の西北地方のキリスト教発展を土台とした崇実大学の成長と発展を縦糸にしながら、論じた。その際、「改正私立学校規則」と神社参拝の強要に見られる、西洋の帝国主義近代ならびに日本の植民地主義との葛藤を踏まえながら、その葛藤関係にアメリカと日本の近代の構築における差異が明確となり、最終的には30年代の日米関係の悪化を背景として、朝鮮におけるミッションの教育が崩壊する過程を描き出している。, In this lecture I discussed the developmental process of Mission higher education in Korea with the reference to the development of Sunsil College, and with the comparative aspect of Mission higher education in East Asia, especially in Japan and China. I also argued the conflict of the Japanese Government General in Korea and Presbyterian Mission in the issue of 'Revised regulations of private schools' and that of 'Shrine Question.' The conflict clearly reelected the deference in modernizing process of Japan and that of the U.S.A.. Joseph Conrad's Lord Jim (1900) is mainly set in the Malay Archipelago. This paper examines the role and significance of the Malay world, which is a place of another culture for Marlow and Jim, through an analysis of Jim's idealism, Marlow's narrative and other peripheral characters in Malay society. In the first chapter, I discuss the meaning of Jim's dreams of heroism and Marlow's discourse of "one of us." Whereas Jim is frustrated with his own behavior, Marlow adopts a paternal attitude and is willing to save him, repeatedly referring to Jim as "one of us." The concept of "one of us" serves to establish a Western identity in opposition to the Malay people, such as when the narrator refers to Dain Waris as "one of them," that is to say "others." In the second chapter, I discuss the representation of the Malay world, concentrating on the relationship between Jim and the Malay people, especially Dain Waris. Generally, Patusan society reflects the colonialist ethos of late nineteenth-century Europe. Malay characters "remain in the background, secondary figures"; however, Dain is portrayed as Jim's trusted friend, a relationship that transgresses racial boundaries. The colonial sphere of the Malay world in this novel is not only a suitable location for Jim to try to realize his own dreams of heroism, but also a significant place for Marlow to establish a Western identity by considering Jim to be "one of us" and identifying the Malay community as the "other." On the other hand, Marlow's narrative of describing the friendship between Jim and Dain implies the possibility of cross-cultural cooperation which transcends the colonial power relationship. I argue that this double perspective creates ambivalent narrative which more or less overlaps with the author's attitude toward contemporary colonial society of the Malay world.

本稿の目的は，蘭領東インド社会を専門にする歴史人類学者アン・ス卜ーラーの近年の論考の検討を通じて，植民地主義と人種主義を再考することである。植民地研究および人種主義研究が現在直面している理論的課題を洗いだし，新たな方向性を探るための指針として彼女の論考を捉え，その可能性の中心を探る。とりわけ以下の2つの論点を前景化しながら議論を進めていく。一つ目の論点は，植民地人種主義の性格づけの問題である。ストーラーの植民地人種主義論は，現地人だけでなく，現地化した白人貧困層や混血者といった白人系の集団の範疇化を論じるという特徴を持っている。もしそうした存在の主題化が新奇に映るとすれば，それは我々自身の思い描く植民地社会像が当時の植民地統治者のものとずれてしまっているからだ，と彼女は主張する。すわなち，, The aim of this essay is to rethink colonialism and racism through explicating the recent writings of Ann Stoler，an historical anthropologist specializing in the Dutch East Indies. The following two points will be of particular importance. The first point concerns the debates over the nature of colonial racism. On notable characteristic of Stoler's approach is that it deals not only with colonized natives， but also with marginalized groups of white decent，such as domiciled white-Europeans and 'mixed-race' persons， explaining how they were classified under categories of colonial control. Agents of colonial power were paranoiacally worried lest the ambivalent presence of those white people-recognized as neither ruler nor ruled-should shake the very foundations of imperial racial rule. The essay will try to elucidate the theoretical implications of Stoler's idea of colonial racism by comparing it with such postcolonial concepts as 'hybridity' and 'ethnographic state'. The second point relates to a set of theoretical issues surrounding ‘comparison'. In recent years，Stoler has repeatedly exhorted colonial studies to take up comparison as its proper field of study. She urges us to pay attention to the fact that， for all sorts of empires since the nineteenth century，comparison assumed great significance not least as a means to accumulate knowledge/skills on colonial governance and to provide the moral rationales for imperialism For those nineteenth and twentieth-century imperialists whom we study and criticize，‘ comparative studies' was as common as ever. The essay will also discuss Japanese colonial studies in ways that relate it to Stoler's view of comparison. In doing so，it will explore how scholars of colonialism in East Asia can respond to her call to foreground and simultaneously transcend the 'imperial politics of comparison'.

朝鮮総督府農事試験場種芸部主任の永井威三郎には、大きな任務が課せられていた。朝鮮の風土に適した新品種の開発である。しかし、これら新品種の爆発的な普及は、結局、解放までみられることはなかった。また、永井は、最先端の育種技術と朝鮮農民の生活レベルの低さのギャップに直面し、満たされないまま帰国した。しかし、「大東亜戦争」開戦と軌を一にして、彼は啓蒙書や随筆のなかで、米英や朝鮮に対する日本技術と食文化の優越性を説きはじめる。彼のジレンマは、欧米との戦争のなかで解消されていくのである。本稿では、これまで取り上げられてこなかった永井に焦点を絞って、永井の排外主義への転換を分析し、農業技術と植民地主義の関係性について考えてみたい。, Nagai Isaburô, the chief of breeding in the Agricultural Experimental Station at Suwon in colonial Korea, was in charge of the development of new rice varieties suitable to Korea's climate. However, these Korean-made varieties did not take off in Korea. His survey of villages near the stations revealed the gap between the advanced agricultural technology of the stations and the low standard of a Korean peasants' life. In the mid-1930s, he returned to Japan dismayed over what he had found. After the outbreak of the "Daitôa War," however, he insisted that the Japanese were superior in food and culture, not only when compared to Western countries, but also to Korea. His dilemma was solved easily by the outbreak of the war. This paper will focus on Nagai's discourse, and will analyze his eventual change to ethnocentrism. Edward W. Said’s Culture and Imperialism stirred up a post-colonial dispute about the novel, Mansfield Park, written by Jane Austen. But Said’s point in question was to interpret the “structure of attitude and reference” of Austen from a viewpoint of the criticism of colonialism from within a colonial realm. I would like to show that it was what he captured by “contrapuntal reading” of Austen’s interpretation in The Country and the City, Reymond Williams presented. If it was Williams in The Country and the City who drew out the criticism of the class society from within the class society of Austen via a viewpoint of the class Austen could not hold but Williams could, it could be interpreted that Said in Culture and Imperialism drew out the criticism of colonialism from within the colonialism society of Austen via a post-colonial viewpoint we can hold but Austen and Williams could not.

Since the late1990s,there has been renewed interest in the concept of citizenship as it applies to minorities,driven largely by the human rights revolution,the increased mobility of the age of globalization,and the consequent perceived weakening of the nation-state.This essay examines the historical and contemporary strategic use of citizenship-related concepts in the indigenous struggle for rights in Australia.It begins by reconstructing the history of Australian settlement from the perspective of indigenous struggles for rights,focusing especially on the ambiguity of the policy of assimilation,which functioned both as a means of justifying colonial appropriation of the Australian continent and as a means of providing indigenous peoples with a path to Australian citizenship.Examining claims to specific indigenous rights,it argues that indigenous citizenship rights,and particularly land rights,established after years of struggle,are now in the process of being eroded through government attempts to encourage more individualist approaches to citizenship.

Colonial rule brought about major changes in two stages. Firstly, the introduction of private land ownership just after colonization led to the collapse of the system of entitlements, and the formation of the dominant caste centered jajmani relationships based on unequal land ownership. The caste hierarchy was strengthened as the Brahmanical view of society was employed by the government for colonial rule. Colonialism thus 'traditionalized' the aspects of hierarchy and dominance in local society. On the other hand, the sacrificial ideas of cooperation of ontologically equal parts and duty as devotional service to God came to be confined to the religio-ritual sphere and cut off from socio-economic relationships. The second major transformation of society came with the development of commercialization of agriculture in the mid-nineteenth century. A class of new rich emerged, while some of the old dominant classes became impoverished and the poorer classes were reduced to the status of agricultural laborers. The imperial economy increasingly penetrated into local society, but in the colonial framework, 'native society and culture' was clearly distinguished from 'the modern state and market'. The two spheres, which were separated under colonialism, developed complex and dynamic relationships that involved articulation and confrontation, Nationalist movements which began in the late nineteenth century also reflected the complexity of the colonial dichotomy. Nationalism of the elite was based on ideals of rationalism and liberalism, whereas patriotism of the masses was based on idioms of caste, kingship and religion. These two movements held complex relationships with each other involving cooperation, contradiction, opposition and attempts towards mediation.

By demonstrating how a particular colonial policy of one empire-state was so frequently made a subject of comparative analysis by agents of other empire-states, the essay points to the very act of comparison as a significant historical component of imperial formations across the globe. 1960年代、躍進期にある同志社生協は地域生協づくりに取り組んだ。その背景には、値上げ問題への対処をめぐって、生協の民主性を問う組合員の批判的な声と、待遇改善を求める職員との声の矛盾があった。そうした矛盾を、1つステージアップした形で解決する方策として提示されたのが大学生協の連合化であり、その延長に地域生協づくりがあった。本稿では、その地域生協づくりの意義を、同志社生協を取り巻く環境に即して多元的に考察した。, 論説

昨年リヨンで1867年に刊行された英語による中国と日本のガイドブックのコピーを入手した。1867年というと日本は江戸時代もまさに終わろうとする時期で,この年の11月9日大政奉還が行われ,翌年1月3日には王政復古が宣言される。この中国と日本の案内書はアヘン戦争後の中国-その隣国の屈辱にまみれた敗北を前に,開国を迫られ,主権が将軍から天皇に移行する激変を前にした日本を扱っている。本論稿はとりあえずはこのガイドブックの日本案内の部分の邦訳紹介と,その歴史的意義の分析がテーマである。ところで筆者がリヨン滞在時,当地では「世紀の精神-リヨン1800-1914」という企画展が市内の博物館,図書館,教育研究機関を網羅して開催されていた。このガイドブックを出版したイギリスで行われたわけではないが,いわゆる植民地帝国時代のヨーロッパの生活をつかむのにはまたとない機会であった。しかも近年日本では東南アジア・東アジア史(東インド会社史も含め)の研究がいよいよさかんになり,この時期の日本の鎖国開国の経緯がこれらの地域の国々と比較検討できる状況になってきた。また岩波書店の『大航海時代叢書』をはじめさまざまな旅行記がすでに翻訳され閲読可能な状態であり,キリスト教伝道と欧米諸国の海外進出の関係についても先鋭な研究が蓄積されつつあるように思われる。また欧米における18世紀以降における旅行ブームと旅行案内書の研究も見られるようになった。こうした中で今回,1867年刊行の中国・日本案内の紹介をなしうることは筆者にとり望外のよろこびである。今回は翻訳紹介する資料の概要についてまず述べると同時に,ガイドブックそのものの誕生の背景と本書の性格について,現在までに気づいた点を指摘したい。I世界最初の英文日本ガイドブック,II本書の対象とする国と都市,III『米欧回覧実記』との対比,IV刊行当時の世界とガイドブック-なぜ「『知』の収奪」か?, Jusqu'ici on croyait que le guide du Japon en anglais avait ete publié pour la première fois en 1891 à l'édition de Murray et qu'il avait utilisé le contenu des deux differents, l'un sur Nikko et l'autre sur le Nord et le Centre du Japon, édités principalement par Ernest Satow. Mais nous en avons decouvert un plus ancien qui avait ete compilé à Honkong en 1867, un peu avant la Restauration de Meiji. Nous allons présenter tout d'abord le sommaire de ce livre en parlant de ses quelques valeurs historiques et notre traduction en serie.
