Objective To investigate the expression of glucose regulated protein 78 (GRP78) and its significance in the renal carcinoma tissues. Methods The immunohistochemistry (IHC) method was used to detect the expression of GRP78 in 108 cases of renal carcinoma tissues and para-carcinoma tissues. According to the expression and percentage, the expression of GRP78 was divided into the positive expression and negative expression. The relationships between the GRP78 expression and clinical pathologic features of patients were analyzed. The Kaplan-Meier was used to calculate the overall survival (OS) of different expression of GRP78, and the Log-rank test was applied to compare. We adopted the Cox regression model to analyze the influence factors of OS. Results The positive rate of GRP78 expression in the tumor tissue was 72.3% (78/108), 19.4% (21/108) in para-carcinoma tissues, and significant difference was found between them (P<0.05). The expression of GRP78 in the renal carcinoma was correlated with lymph node metastasis and clinical stage (all P<0.05), and was not related with sex, age, diameter of tumor, pathological type and Fuhrman stage (all P>0.05). The overall survival time of patients with positive and negative expression of GRP78 in renal carcinoma was (57.9 ±8.6) and (77.2 ±7.9) months, respectively. The overall survival time of patients with positive GRP78 expression was significantly lower than that of patients with negative GRP78 expression (P<0.05). Univariate analysis demonstrated GRP78 expression, clinical stage, grade of Fuhrman and lymph node metastasis were the influence factor for OS; Multivariate analysis confirmed that the positive expression of GRP78, grade of Fuhrman and lymph node metastasis were three independent prognostic factors for OS (all P<0.05). Conclusion GRP78 expression was increased in the renal carcinoma and its high expression was related with OS of patients. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] more...
