Often, catch and release regulations are meant to maximize a fisheries potential to create trophy fish. I evaluated adult Brown Trout populations at five locations within Rapid Creek within Rapid City, SD over a two-year period. In each year, one of these locations was within a catch and release area, while two were outside. In 2012, density and biomass estimates were higher in a site located outside of the catch and release area. Additionally, size structure within the catch and release area was only significantly larger than one of the two sites outside of the regulation area. Mean relative weight values were inversely related to density estimates, with the lowest density sites having the highest mean relative weights. Similarly, a site outside of the catch and release area had the highest abundance and biomass estimates in 2013. The cumulative length distribution was significantly different between the site within the catch and release area and the two located outside. Relative weight was significantly higher in the catch and release area than the two sites outside. As population characteristics within the catch and release area were not consistently better than outside, it is more likely that factors such as habitat and density dependence are impacting the Brown Trout population more than the regulation itself.

Fresh fish, and especially fatty species, are highly perishable due to oxidative deterioration of fish flesh and the elevated microbial load on fish surface. The implementation of a variety of “mild hurdles” may significantly decrease the rates of fish chemical degradation and microbiological spoilage, by better retaining the initial quality, compared to more intense preservation techniques. The aim of this work is the comparative study of different, single or combined, treatments at 15 °C on the quality and shelf life of chilled eel fillets. Fish fillets were treated using osmotic solutions consisting of glycerol (30%–40%–45%) and 5% NaCl with and without former antioxidant impregnation by using Rosemary Serum. In all cases, water activity decreased to approximately 0.90 after 420 min of osmotic treatment. Untreated and osmotically treated fish fillets were subsequently stored at 4 °C and their stability under chill conditions was assessed based on microbial growth and oxidative deterioration. Microbial growth of treated samples was significantly delayed, especially due to the osmotic step (OS) and the derived water activity decrease. Lipid oxidation, a major cause of rejection for fatty fish such as eel, was greatly inhibited in treated fillets, owing to both ‘hurdles’, aw lowering (OS) and antioxidant impregnation with rosemary serum (RS/OS), showing the synergistic effect of these successive procedures. Shelf life of treated eel fillets exhibited a more than 10-fold increase, as compared to the untreated samples, based on chemical composition and a 2 to 3-fold shelf life improvement, in terms of microbial growth.

The objective of the study was to investigate the efficiency of slurry ice during harvesting and transportation of European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) to retain flesh quality and extend shelf life, compared with conventional flake ice. Fish was slaughtered and transported in different mixtures of slurry ice and conventional flake ice (C: slaughtered and transported in 100% flake ice-Control samples, SC: slaughtered in 100% slurry ice and transported in 100% flake ice, S50: slaughtered and transported in 50% slurry ice-50% flake ice, S100: slaughtered and transported in 100% slurry ice) and subsequently stored under controlled isothermal conditions at 0 °C for shelf life modelling and flesh quality evaluation (proteolytic enzymes). The replacement of conventional flake ice with slurry ice as a slaughtering method led to improved quality stability during subsequent refrigerated storage and shelf life extension, in terms of microbial growth, flesh quality and sensory degradation of fish. Based on microbial growth, the shelf life of C samples was found to be 19 days, whereas the shelf life of S50/S100 and SC was 21 and 25 days, respectively, showing that the replacement of flake ice with slurry ice resulted in 2–6 days shelf life extension of whole sea bass stored at 0 °C. The use of slurry ice at slaughter and flake ice in transportation was accompanied by low activities and late peaks of all four enzymes that is expected to lead to delayed proteolytic degradation and extended freshness.

Occurrence of biogenic amines in fresh fish and fishery products constitute a significant safety concern. Ingestion of histamine is identified as the causative agent of several food poisoning incidences on an annual basis. In addition, cadaverine, putrescine and tyramine have been recognized as potentiators of histamine poisoning. Accumulation of biogenic amines in fresh fish and fishery products has been mainly attributed to growth of bacteria possessing amino acid decarboxylase activity, which is facilitated by lack of hygienic conditions and strict temperature control during their storage. To this end, the effectiveness of traditional and modern approaches to control biogenic amine accumulation has been in the epicenter of intensive study. The aim of the present review article is to update and integrate current knowledge regarding the biogenic amine content of fresh fish and fishery products as well as the capacity of traditional and emerging control strategies.

Introduction. To represent our national goods at the Western market it is necessary to ensure, first of all, the competitiveness of local products through complex mechanization of technological processes, labour costs reduction, increasing yields and quality of received products. The aim of the research is to provide the comparative analysis of technology and machines for potato harvesting, to determine the main factors that influence the agricultural technical indicators of harvesting equipment, to develop technological process patterns and to examine the strategies for improving the potato root-and-harvest machines. Methods and methodology. The research was carried out on the basis of technological and constructional analysis of technology and machines for potato harvesting. The methods of comparison and mathematical modelling of technological processes were used in the study. The research studies of Ukrainian and foreign scientists on technology and machines for potato harvesting were used as information base of our paper. Results. A comparative analysis of technology and machines for potato harvesting made it possible to determine the main factors that influence the agricultural performance of harvesting machinery and to develop the technological process for a digger, a double-loader digger and a harvester (harvesting machines). A theoretical model of the technological processes of harvesting machines includes both uncontrolled and controlled factors that influence the choice of a potato harvesting technology of a digger, a double-loader digger and a harvester. Nevertheless, the first factors are connected, primarily, with the conditions of potato growth and its biological properties, and the second factors deal with the organizational and technical measures, including the improvement of the working bodies of machines (cutting, dirt digging through, top separation, longitudinal hump with cut roller and other constructive and kinematic parameters), quality of received products, length and terms of potato storage, available farming human resources, free vehicle in the period of harvesting, farm potato storage, farm equipment for potato cleaning and sorting.

The catfishes are a group of economically important freshwater fish in China, which in recent years have suffered heavy losses as a result of bacterial outbreaks. In this study, we examined the diversity of the microbiome of infected skin mucus of yellow catfish (Pelteobagrus fulvidraco) and channel catfish (Ictalurus punctatus) and analyzed the bacterial pathogens. We found several common pathogenic bacteria, such as Aeromonas spp., Vibrio spp., Moraxella spp. and Proteus spp. present in both fish species, but with significantly different bacterial community structures. We isolated and cultured Aeromonas veronii and Proteus mirabilis and validated their infectivity in zebrafish (Danio rerio) and yellow catfish. Intraperitoneal injection of either bacteria into zebrafish, but not immersion, caused 100% mortality and ovary fragmentation. Yellow catfish was more sensitive than zebrafish with 100% mortality in the immersion challenges with A. veronii or P. mirabilis, and with a higher abundance of A. veronii in the P. mirabilis-challenged group compared to control. To our knowledge, this is the first study on the pathogenicity of P. mirabilis in yellow catfish, and the results will help to develop effective strategies for the disease prevention and control in catfish farming.

A study was carried out at CSIR-CIMAP, RC. Hyderabad (India) to study the impact of coppicing time on the oil percent and its chemical composition of different cultivars of lemongrass using a randomized block design. The freshly harvested herb was used for the hydro-distillation for essential oil, and subsequent chemical analysis. The chemical components identification of the essential oil was performed by GC–MS. In the results coppicing time influenced significant changes in the essential oil content, essential oil yield, and its chemical composition especially, total citral, and geraniol content. The four top rankers varieties/cultivars of lemongrass for the essential oil yield were CIM-Shikhar > Krishna > CKP-25 > CIMAP-Suwarna; for the essential oil content CIM–Shikhar > Krishna > CIMAP-Suwarna > Praman; for total citral content Nima > CIM–Shikhar > Krishna > Pragati, and for the total geraniol content Himrosa > CN-5 > Tawirosa > Kalam, respectively. Therefore, we can recommend these varieties/cultivars for commercial cultivation in large areas under the semi-arid region of south India.

Branding Wooden Multi-storey Construction – Real-Estate Agents as Gatekeepers for Enhancing Consumer Value in Housing

Light is an essential natural factor of fish growth and development. A light regime in indoor aquaculture is critical for sustainable fish production. This research aimed to investigate the effect of light intensity and photoperiod on the growth performance and stress response of Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus), which is an important commercial species, in a recirculating aquaculture system (RAS). Fingerlings with an average weight of 5 ± 0.9 g were randomly assigned to nine 1.5 m3 tanks with 145 fish in each tank, cultured under different light intensities (1000, 2000, and 3000 lx) and photoperiods (12L:12D, 18L:6D, 24L:0D), and fed to apparent satiation twice a day for 160 days. The growth of tilapia subjected to 2000 lx was significantly better than that exposed to 1000 and 3000 lx (P 0.05). Light intensity and photoperiod manipulation did not cause a significant chronic stress response in tilapia. This study demonstrated that light intensity, especially at 2000 lx, and photoperiod manipulation could stimulate the growth of tilapia in the RAS and significantly affect economic profitability. This study also served as an important reference for tilapia indoor aquaculture.

Polybrominated diphenyl ether has become a widespread environmental pollutant in aquatic environments. BDE-209, a prominent PBDEs found in the environment and wildlife, has been proven to cause oxidative stress, immune damage and endocrine system disorders in fish. However, the effects of BDE-209 on the intestinal health of fish remain unclear. This research aimed to determine the effects of BDE-209 on the growth performance, digestive enzymes activities and intestinal microbiota of common carp. After 60-day exposure, the growth performance of common carp were remarkably decreased (P 0.05). Overall, exposure to BDE-209 could alter the intestinal microbiota of common carp, which may affect their growth and threaten their health.

The importance of renewable and environmentally acceptable materials in the construction industry is increasing. Wood is one of the most important construction materials and its use in building applications has further expanded in recent decades, mainly due to the development of modern composites, firstly glue lam, OSB (Oriented Strand Board), LVL (Laminated Veneer Lumber) and a considerable breakthrough was later achieved with the development of cross-laminated timber. In order to enable even more extensive and reliable use of wood in outdoor applications, factors affecting a wood’s service life need to be understood. It is well known that fungal degradation of wood is predominantly affected by temperature and wood moisture content. In order to elucidate the influence of these two factors, long-term monitoring of temperature, relative humidity and moisture content at the newly-built Annex of the Department of Wood Science and Technology was carried out. The Annex is designed from CLT composites and glue-lam beams and was finished in December 2015. The results clearly show that microclimatic conditions in the monitored building in the first years of use are far below the limit required for fungal decay or mould growth.

Urban expansions into natural habitats have forced many carnivores to adapt to the modified areas; however, our understanding of their ecology in such areas is limited. The Indian fox (Vulpes bengalensis) is a small carnivore species that can adapt and exploit urban areas due to its generalist nature, but there is a paucity of data on Indian foxes in these human-modified areas. To understand the resource requirement of Indian foxes in urban habitats, we conducted a diet analysis by examining 119 scats of Indian foxes in a peri-urban habitat of Baripada town, Odisha, eastern India. To determine the diet composition of Indian foxes, we analyzed scat contents by their frequency occurrence (%FO), the relative frequency of occurrence (%RF) and mean percent volume (%Vm). Indian foxes consumed a wide range of food categories, including arthropods, rodents, reptiles, birds, plant parts and anthropogenic resources. In %Vm, rodents showed the highest volume, followed by polythene, Spondias pinnata fruit and Coleoptera. We found anthropogenic foods in considerable quantities, including polythene and paper. The diet of Indian foxes indicates that the species has opportunistic and generalist feeding habits consisting primarily of easily accessible foods. Furthermore, management efforts should focus on the proper management of waste and control of anthropogenic food sources in urban habitats.

Plants sustain several ecosystem functions thereby playing a crucial role in conservation management. Lantana camara an invasive weed has become the common part of a bushes. The mutualistic relationship between this weed plant and butterflies are well known. Butterflies depend on Lantana camara for food, oviposition site, larval development etc. In this context we are highlighting the role of this invasive weed for butterfly conservation and maintaining total butterfly abundance. In this study the species richness highest for the site where the bushes were dominated by Lantana camara and lowest for the site where LCA abundance was low. The butterfly abundance and LCA abundance maintain a strong positive relationship and LCA abundance, species richness and and butterfly abundance are strongly correlated and dominance is negatively correlated with other three variables. So we can use the Lantana camara as a model organism for conservation and maintaining the butterfly abundance in Purulia, West Bengal, India.

Roselle (Hibiscus sabdariffa L.) is recognized as a valuable food crop due to its nutraceutical potential, rich pigment content, and medicinal properties. However, there is limited information on planting dates and suitable genotypes for roselle cultivation in arid and semi-arid regions. The objective of this field study was to investigate the influence of five planting dates (March, April, May, June, and July) on morphological and phytochemical characteristics of different roselle genotypes. Among genotypes, eight (Jiroft, Dalgan, Bampoor, Iranshahr, Nikshahr, Roodbar, Saravan, and Qaleganj) were Iranian landraces, and HA and HS-24 were originated from Ghana and Bangladesh, respectively. Planting date significantly influenced the number of branches, bolls and seeds per plant, sepal fresh weight, calyx and biomass yields, and harvest index in tested roselle landraces. The greatest morphological growth, fresh sepal weight (50.6 g plant−1) and calyx yield (1519 kg ha−1) were observed with the roselle planted in early May. Moreover, amounts of chlorophyll, flavonoids and antioxidant remained higher in roselle when planted between April–May. The number of branches/plant was found to be an important determinant of calyx yield (r = 0.707) in roselle. Dalgan resulted in the greatest growth and yields within a comparatively shorter period of time compared to other tested landraces. Both principal component analysis (PCA) and cluster analysis also indicated that Dalgan landrace possessed most suitable morphological and phytochemical traits among tested landraces, and therefore, it could be planted adopted for extensive cultivation settings in the arid and semi-arid regions.

Bacteria are considered as foremost bioremediating agents among microorganisms, encompassing simple biological mechanism to tolerate higher concentration of heavy metal and favoring conservative strategies to substitute the usage of chemicals. Relating this implication, the present study is designed to identify, screen and characterize bacteria from industrial site soil to tolerate multimetals. Almost 108 colonies were obtained at various concentrations (0.5–2.0 mM) of heavy metals (cadmium, nickel and lead) and were thrived in the reformed minimal media. Bacterial isolates that grown in the higher concentration of heavy metals (2.0 mM) were taken for further studies. Among ten bacterial colonies, one isolate was selected for each heavy metal and further screened for their multi metal tolerance. Isolate, C20 alone survived in heavy metal mixture fortified medium with high recovery rate and increased colony forming units. Molecular level characterization and phylogenetic tree analysis revealed that the isolate is identical to Bacillus thuringiensis. The study highlights that the multi metal tolerant B. thuringiensis could be used as an effective bioremediating agent to manage heavy metals particularly cadmium, nickel and lead in industrial area. Further, attributed to be a plant growth promoting rhizobacteria, this organism can promote dual stratagems as a bio remediating agent and fertility enhancer in agricultural field due to its dual functions.

Enormous biotic stresses, such as uncontrolled grazing, logging, use of plants for timber and fuelwood, deforestation for cultivation, and road constructions have drastically deteriorated forests in the Kashmir Himalaya. On the basis of the intensity of biotic stress, three differently forest sites, protected, unprotected and roadside forest, were studied. Random vegetation sampling was done to record herbaceous diversity in the Tangmarg Forest Division of Kashmir valley in 2019. Six diversity indices were negatively correlated with increasing levels of anthropogenic disturbance. The values further elucidated by the Renyi diversity profiles, indicated that the protected forest sites had significantly higher diversity as compared to the road side forest sites. Scaling based on an increased order of total number of species in the forest richness and diversity – on top were protected forest sites, followed by unprotected forest sites, while road side forest sites were on the lower end of this spectrum. The Principal component analysis (PCA) showed two distinct groups based on the composition and IVI of the plant species. The results of this study identify diverse biotic stresses and could help in framing the policies for forest management.

Clove basil (Ocimum gratissimum L.) is an aromatic, perennial herb belonging to the family Lamiaceae. The plant is indigenous to tropical areas especially India and West Africa. In Nigeria, it is found in the Savannah and coastal areas. The whole herbs of the plant contain essential oils and it is cultivated for various purposes. The plant is a rich source of eugenol in its essential oil. It is also used in the preparation of tea and infusions. It is also used in the treatment of fungal infections, fever, cold, and cough. Eugenol (4-allyl-2-methoxy phenol) is a phenolic compound from the class of phenylpropanoids. It is used in the food industry as a preservative, mainly due to its antioxidant property, and flavoring agent. The fresh herb × winter season/environment produced the highest essential oil 2.07 mL/plot with essential oil content 0.41% followed by fresh herb × summer season/environment (M1S2) = 1.68 mL. For the eugenol content, the autumn season/environment was found highly favorable = 74.52% (leaves = 69.024, stem = 74.531, and in inflorescence = 80.012) followed winter season/environment 72.30% (leaves = 71.841, stem 69.389, inflorescence 76.042, mean = 72.42%). These seasons are recommended for harvesting to obtain the optimum benefit for the quality essential oil yield.

The species Schleichera oleosa (Kusum), being rich in nutritional, medicinal and processing qualities can play a very important role in the livelihood security of the rural communities through enhanced household income, employment generation and environmental protection. People of many states of India are becoming increasingly aware about the potential importance of this species in terms of its ethnobotany and lac production in their livelihood security. Value addition of all the components especially seed oil for biodiesel production, lac production and processing of bark for exploiting their nutritional and medicinal properties is a long-term strategy. There is need of increasing the area and plantation of this valuable species and enhancing their processed products. Moreover, to domesticate this species on farmer's field, there is a need to develop good cultivars. Hence, there is an ample scope in developing propagation methods and suitable good cultivars through nursery management programme. Dissemination of improved production technologies, value addition and marketing strategies regarding Kusum trees and its products to the farmers/entrepreneurs/lac based industries is of utmost importance for promoting it as agribusiness.

Spirulina is a filamentous, multi-cellular and autotrophic cyanobacterium having distinct features of helical shape filaments (i.e. trichomes). An investigation is to isolate a marine, Spirulina subsalsa from Vellar estuary, South East Coast zone of India. The isolated strain sub-cultured in Zarrouk medium with optimum conditions for sustaining growth. Pure cultures were examined in a research microscope for morphometric studies through 16S rRNA sequencing and the sequence was submitted to NCBI-GENBANK, the accession number is MW037197 which displays the maximum similarity as 100% with a diverse sequence in databank i.e. LC 215280. The investigation is the first record for the existence of Spirulina subsalsa in Vellar Estuary, South East Coast, Tamil Nadu (India) as affirmed by a molecular nucleotide sequence.

Establishing suitable salt tolerant all-male tilapia strains with fast growth rate is a crucial requirement for successful euryhaline farming required for controlling prolific breeding and as an adaptation to the effect of climate-induced drought. This study assessed the percentage of tilapia male hybrids, their growth performance and survival rate produced by crossing female Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) and male Rufiji tilapia (Oreochromis urolepis urolepis) at different salinities. The fingerlings were reared for 70 days in triplicate concrete tanks (1 m3), each stocked with 15 fish weighing 1.62 ± 0.03 g, 1.69 ± 0.02 g and 1.41 ± 0.06 g exposed to 2, 15 and 35 ppt salinities, respectively. Acclimatization was done by adding seawater to freshwater at a rate of 2 ppt per day for 18 days. Fish sexing was done by visual assessment of the genital papilla followed by rearing the hybrids for six months to observe reproduction. Results showed that, the cross between O. niloticus (female) and O. urolepis urolepis (male) produced hybrids that were all-males without any reproduction within six months post hybridization. The hybrids reared at a salinity of 2 ppt had higher growth performance than those reared at 15 and 35 ppt. Similarly, hybrids cultured at 15 ppt had significantly higher growth performance than those reared at 35 ppt. All the hybrids produced had survival rates of 100%. This study indicated that, all-male tilapia produced by crossing between O. niloticus (female) and O. urolepis (male) can be used by fish farmers as alternative species for mariculture development to control prolific breeding and as an adaptation strategy to climate change.

In this study, the effects of chemical refining on the physicochemical indices, environmental pollutants, lipid functional groups, relaxation characteristics, fatty acid profiles, and triglyceride (TG) molecular species in crude oil extracted from small fish in Mauritania were evaluated. The acid, peroxide, and iodine values of crude oil were identified as 5.52 mg KOH/g, 1.73 meq/kg, and 200.78 g/100 g oil, respectively. After refining, these values were determined to be 0.29 mg KOH/g, 0.76 meq/kg, and 210.80 g/100 g oil, respectively. The polychlorinated biphenyls and arsenic content of crude oil were identified as 32.30 μg/kg and 1.00 mg/kg, respectively. After refining, these were not detected. The content of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) accounted for as much as 87.55% of the polyunsaturated fatty acids in the refined oil, indicating that high-quality fish oil is suitable as a food supplement. The correlation coefficient of the infrared spectra before and after refining was 0.968, and the relaxation time and peak shape data were almost similar before and after purification. Meanwhile, there were no significant differences (P ≥ 0.05) in fatty acid profiles between the crude and refined oils, except for C16:0 (P

The present study on some biological aspects of the Mormyridae fishes, was conducted between May and August 2015 in the Upper Sanaga at Lekie Department (Monatele Town), Center Cameroon. For this purpose, 125 specimens collected by local fishermen were used. Fishes were identified and measured, and their feeding and reproductive parameters were obtained after dissection. The catch composition of 4 species (Campylomormyrus phantasticus, Mormyrops anguilloides, Mormyrus macrophtalamus, Mormyrus tapirus) of Mormyridae identified in the region was very low (17%–30%). The mean ± standard deviation of total weight and total length were 103.14 ± 37.83 g and 27.47 ± 4.84 cm, respectively. The minimum and maximum size (of 21.1 cm and 43 cm) were recorded from C. phantasticus and M. anguilloides, respectively. The mean ± standard deviation of the relative length and mass of the digestive tract were 0.35% ± 0.20% and 5.27% ± 23.20%, respectively confirming that Mormyridae fish species have a strict carnivorous diet and consume prey that are difficult to digest. The size frequency distribution of the Mormyridae fishes showed that the majority of the fish caught are small sizes in classes 23–26 cm and 26–29 cm in C. phantasticus, M. macrophthalamus and M. tapirus. M. anguilloides did not record small specimens, however, it recorded larger sized specimens (41–44 cm) compared to the rest. The sex ratio ranged from 1M: 1.14F (M. anguilloides) to 1M: 4F (M. tapirus), mean 1M: 2.04F has been generally in favour of females. The gonadosomatic index (GSI) was generally low in all species. However, it was higher in females of C. phantasticus and M. anguilloides compared to other species. The hepatosomatic index (HSI) was weakly correlated with the GSI in these species.

Following state-level legal changes that increase labor dismissal costs, firms increase their innovation in new processes that facilitate the adoption of cost-saving production methods, especially in industries with a large share of labor costs in total costs. Firms with high innovation ability exhibit larger increases in process innovation and capital-labor ratios - an effect driven by both increases in capital investment and decreases in employment. By facilitating the adjustment of the input mix when conditions in input markets change, innovation ability allows firms to mitigate value losses and is a key driver of their performance.

The present study was conducted to estimate the optimum requirement of phosphorus in practical diets for largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides). Six iso-energetic and iso-nitrogenous diets were formulated with the supplementation of monocalcium phosphate (MCP) of 0, 5, 10, 15, 20 and 25 g/kg in basal diet containing 350 g/kg fish meal, respectively. The digestible phosphorus of the six diets was measured as 5.7, 6.7, 7.8, 8.7, 9.3 and 10.0 g/kg, respectively. Each diet was randomly fed to triplicate groups of 25 juvenile fish (initial body weight, 16.0 ± 0.2 g) for 60 days. The results showed that weight gain increased, and feed conversion ratio decreased with the increase of dietary phosphorus. When dietary MCP exceeded 15 g/kg (digestible phosphorus of 8.7 g/kg), the WG and FCR were maintained at the similar values. The crude ash, phosphorus and calcium contents in whole body, apparent digestibility of phosphorus and protein retention also increased with the increasing phosphorus level in diets. Vertebrae phosphorus and calcium levels and plasma phosphorus showed no further increase when dietary MCP reached 20, 20 and 10 g/kg with digestible phosphorus of 9.3, 9.3 and 7.8 g/kg, respectively. Broken-line analysis indicated that the digestible phosphorus requirement for largemouth bass were 8.9, 8.7 and 9.6 g/kg based on weight gain, feed conversion ratio and vertebral phosphorus content. In conclusion, the supplementation of MCP in a diet containing 350 g/kg fish meal improved the growth and feed utilization of largemouth bass, and the digestible phosphorus requirement was suggested to be 8.7–8.9 g/kg with MCP supplementation of 15.0–15.8 g/kg.

Nano-selenium (Se) has attracted growing attention due to its high bioavailability, low toxicity and its possible applications in the prevention of oxidative damage in animal tissues. Recent research works have conveyed that the use of nano-seleniumas food additive could have positive effects on the nutrition of aquatic animals.In this study, the intestinal bacterial communities associated with low and high concentrations of nano-selenium in the diet of Chinese tongue sole were characterized, through 16S rRNA V3–V4 sequencing.Samples were derived from fish fed with diet containing different nano-selenium level, 0 mg/kg for the control group, 1.6 mg/kg for low dose group, and 2.4 mg/kg for high dose group The intestinal microbial community structure showed a low overall diversity, among which the vibro genus occupied the most important position with more than 90% relative abundance in all three group. Significant differences in specie diversity occurred between the nano-selenium treated (both low dose [IL] and high dose [LH]) groups and the control group(IC). Acinetobacter, Arthrobacter, and Streptophytes were the top three enriched genera after the treatment with nano-selenium compared to IC. Meantime, the weight gain rate of the LH group was 9% higher than control. The results revealed the effect of nano-selenium on microbial community structure of gut and growth performance of C.semilaevis, Future research exploring the interaction mechanism between micronutrients and the microbial communities would increase our understanding of the fish nutrition.

Blind-side hypermelanosis has emerged as a major concern in flatfish aquaculture worldwide, including tongue sole (Cynoglossus semilaevis) in China. The causative gene and the molecular basis are still unclear. In this study, comparative transcriptome analyses were performed using different skin tissues of tongue sole: ocular-side normal (pigmented) skin, blind-side normal (non-pigmented) skin and blind-side hypermelanotic (pigmented) skin. Finally, 60 key hypermelanosis-related genes were mined, providing potential candidate gene resources involved in blind-side hypermelanosis. Grass carp has the highest production yield among all the farmed fish species around the world. But the molecular and genetic basis of growth traits is inadequately understood in this fish. In the present study, we apply whole-transcriptome sequencing to identify genes whose expression is different between fast and slow growing grass carp. We identified 1178 differentially expressed genes (DEGs), among which 270 were upregulated in the fast growing group and 908 upregulated in the slow growing group. The GO enrichment analysis revealed that DEGs was significantly enriched in protein synthesis and export machinery, cell division and development and metabolism, suggesting that cell division and metabolism may play key roles in development processes of fish. KEGG pathway analysis showed that MAPK signaling pathway may play a prominent role in growth difference. In addition, the majority of genes in immune responses related pathway were upregulated in the slow growing individuals. These results provide some valuable resources for understanding the molecular mechanisms of growth traits in fish.

Dried or defatted black soldier fly (Hermetia illucens) larvae meal has been shown an important ingredient in aquafeed, but little information is available about the effects of black soldier fly pulp (BSFP) on growth and health of fish. A 62-day feeding trial was conducted to assess the effects of dietary BSFP on growth performance, whole body composition, serum metabolites, antioxidant and immune response of Micropterus salmoides. Four isoproteic and isolipidic diets were formulated by adding BSFP (original substance) to the basal diet at the rate of 0% (BSFP0), 1% (BSFP1), 2% (BSFP2) and 4% (BSFP4), corresponding to inclusion of 0, 4.5, 9.0 and 18.0 g/kg DM in diets. Each diet was randomly assigned to triplicate groups of 35 fish per tank. Fish were fed twice daily to apparent satiation. Human activities have significantly accelerated emissions of each carbon dioxide and biologically reactive nitrogen into the atmosphere. As nitrogen availability frequently limits forest productivity, it has long been anticipated that anthropogenic nitrogen deposition ought to stimulate carbon sequestration in forests. The present study aimed to understand the effects of nitrogen addition on the growth of the Syzygium cumini in ambient (408 ppm) and elevated (450 ppm, 500 ppm, 550 ppm and 600 ppm) carbon dioxide conditions. The addition of nitrogen in the form of potassium nitrate in different levels (0, 3, 6, 12, & 24 g N m−2) was used in this study. The responses of the plant in terms of growth (shoot length, leaf length and leaf width) were examined. Multiple regression equation was used for the model fit to determine the carbon content. The carbon content was found to be higher in all ambient and elevated CO2 conditions at the nitrogen addition level of 24 g N m−2.

Hal ini disebabkan karena begitu kompleksnya penilaian yang perlu dilakukan untuk mendapatkan hasil yang baik untuk penilaian pada level regional dan nasional. Material news events can be potentially important sources of jumps in stock returns. We collect 21 million news articles associated with more than 9,000 publicly-traded companies and use textual analyses to derive measures to summarize the news. We find that stock return jumps (including time-variation in jump-size distributions and jump intensity) are significantly related to news flow frequency and content and those effects increase substantially over the last few decades. The sensitivity of jump probability to news is stronger for firms with higher media visibility, analyst coverage, and institutional ownership. This sensitivity also varies across different news categories. A 56-day experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of ambient salinity and alkalinity on fatty acids, free amino acids and related anabolic metabolisms of Nile tilapia. The fatty acid and free amino acid contents in the muscle of tilapia cultured in saline water (SW), alkaline water (AW), saline–alkaline water (SAW) and fresh water (FW) conditions were analyzed and compared. The mRNA levels and enzymatic activities of fatty acyl desaturase (FADS2), elongation of very long-chain fatty acids (ELOVL5), Δ1-pyrroline-5-carboxylate synthase (P5CS), ornithine-δ-aminotransferase (δ-OAT), and proline dehydrogenase (PDH) were also determined. The contents of saturated and monounsaturated fatty acids were significantly higher in the AW and SAW groups than those in the SW group, and those of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) were the highest in the SAW group. The contents of flavor amino acids in the SAW and AW groups were significantly higher than that in the SW group, and that of proline in the SW, AW, and SAW groups was 3.58-, 4.11-, and 4.15-times higher than that in the FW group. The mRNA levels and enzyme activities of FADS 2, ELOVL5, PDH and P5CS were found to differ among the different groups. The results suggested that ambient salinity and alkalinity could effectively improve flesh quality of tilapia by regulating lipid and proline metabolism pathways.

Quantitative counting of fry is required for multiple reasons, including breeding, transportation, and sales and creating a fish-counting algorithm using image processing technology is proposed as a useful method. The images for fish fry were preprocessed to extract the details of the target fish, using methods including binarization, dilation, and erosion. The thinning and the connected area algorithms were then independently adopted to count the fish fry within the image. The advantages and the disadvantages of the two algorithms under different densities were also compared, revealing that the fish fry pictures with a clear contrast between the foreground and background resulted in a higher accuracy. The main purpose of this research is to solve the problem of fry counting in the case of high density and high overlap. This research provides a reference point for this method based on image technology.

The present study was conducted to evaluate the efficacy of phytogenic extract on growth and health of tilapia. Three experimental diets were designed as the basal diet (Con) and phytogenic extract (Flourishing, F) supplemented diets at 0.5 and 1 g/kg inclusion (F-1 and F-2), which the phytogenic additive was extracted from Eucommia ulmoides, Astragalus membranaceus, Lonicera japonica and Codonopsis pilosula. The three diets were fed to juvenile tilapia (14.0 ± 0.1 g) with 30 fish per cage, and three replicate cages from the three groups were placed in one indoor concrete pool (a total of three pools were used). This study was designed to generate the full-length transcriptome of Coilia nasus using single-molecule long read isoform sequencing (SMRT-seq) technology. RNAs of brains, ovaries, and testes of C. nasus conditioned in both seawater and freshwater except for gut which was only from the fish conditioned in freshwater, were isolated. All the RNAs were pooled together equally for SMRT sequencing. One SMRT cell produced 64.18 Gb clean data, including 765,184 circular consensus (CCS) reads and 616,126 full-length non-chimeric (FLNC) reads. Finally, 93,793 non-redundant transcripts were obtained after clustered and polished. Structural analysis of the 93,793 non-redundant transcripts predicted 8242 alternative splicing events, a total of 229,825 SSR and 72,037 complete CDS. A total of 8437 lncRNA were identified. 84,617 transcripts were annotated in NR, Swissprot, GO, COG, KOG, eggnog, Pfam and KEGG database totally. This is the first full-length transcriptome of Coilia nasus, including transcripts appeared in the case of seawater, which will facilitate exploration of genetic data and life story of Coilia nasus.

Red seaweed species Eucheuma cottonii was thought to have potential as an anesthetic agent because it is shown to contain compounds with bioactivity as antimicrobial, antifungal, and also anticancer. There have been no studies regarding the active ingredients of anesthetized. The objective of the study was to examine the potential of E. cottonii extract as a candidate for fish anesthetic based on toxicity, phytochemistry, and active compounds contained in the extract. The stages of research include extraction, toxicity test extracts (BSLT), phytochemical test, quantitative test compound phytochemical results, and the identification of active compounds with LC-MS. Test results showed that E. cottonii extract contains a total of phenols of 4.60 ± 0.06 mg/GAE g which is one presentation of the active ingredient in the extract. The extract had bioactivity with LC50 of 221.71 ± 5.74 μg/mL. E. cottonii extract contained flavonoids compounds and saponins with a consecutive number of 24.48% and 0.22%. The results of identifying active compounds were found in several compounds that had activity asantidepressants or sedatives. E. cottonii extract can be used as a candidate for a fish anesthetic agent.

Goldfish (Carassius auratus auratus) are important ornamental fish that have experienced extreme anthropogenic selection and exhibit diverse phenotypes. Loss of the dorsal fin is a key characteristic that distinguishes the Egg-goldfish from the Wen-goldfish. However, the mechanisms underlying the divergence in dorsal fin development are still unknown between the Egg-goldfish and the Wen-goldfish. In this study, we sought to unravel the postembryonic developmental processes of two goldfish strains, Red Cap Oranda, a representative of the Wen-goldfish, and Ranchu, a representative of the Egg-goldfish. We examined the developmental morphology of the dorsal fin in five-month-old goldfish larvae using both Alcian blue-alizarin red staining and X-ray photography. We showed that the developmental processes of the dorsal fin fold were different in Ranchu compared to Red Cap Oranda, despite similarity in their general developmental processes. We categorized the postembryonic development of Ranchu larvae into four types based on the number of the initial residual dorsal fin fold appearing at protruding-mouth stage. The number, size and position of the initial residual dorsal fin fold appeared at hatching affected and eventually determined the phenotypic variations in dorsal fin defects in Ranchu. In addition, we genotyped the eomesa gene to determine whether it would be a candidate gene responsible for the loss of the dorsal fin in Ranchu. The eomesa CDS sequence exhibited no nonsense mutation in Ranchu. In summary, the absence of the dorsal fin fold during postembryonic development eventually resulted in the loss of the dorsal fin in Ranchu. Further investigation is required to determine whether other genes and developmental pathways play important roles in the loss of the dorsal fin in Ranchu.

Combining morphological comparison with karyotyping can make a more accurate and comprehensive study of mandarin fish (Siniperca spp.) and hybrid progenies. In recent years, the domestication of hybrid mandarin fish has become a hot spot in China, and it is essential to evaluate the nutritional value of the fish after food conversion. In this study, the F1 hybrid (S. chuatsi ♀ × S. scherzeri♂) were fed with artificial feed for five months. Afterwards, we studied the morphology, karyotypes, and biochemical composition of muscle in the F1 hybrid and its parents. The morphological results showed that total length and body height of the F1 hybrid appear to derive more from S. chuatsi than S. scherzeri. The DNA ploidy and karyotype results indicated that the F1 hybrid have a diploid chromosome number (2n = 48) and the same karyotypes (2n = 4sm + 14th+30t, NF = 52) with its parents, suggesting that the chromosome of the mandarin fish has convergence in the process of evolution. The results of biochemical composition of muscle showed that there were no significant difference in other nutritional indicators (P > 0.05), except the Gly (glycine) content of the F1 hybrid was significantly higher than that of S. chuatsi (P

Gillnets are the primary fishing gear used to catch Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua) in coastal areas of Newfoundland and Labrador but are known to catch non-target species and produce lower quality fish than live-catch methods. The purpose of this study was to compare the catch efficiency of collapsible cod pots against gillnets near the Gilbert Bay Marine Protected Area (MPA), Labrador, where a reduction in by-catch is needed. Results showed that one cod pot caught half as much Atlantic cod as a gillnet, and pots had a relatively stable catch rate throughout the sampling period, whereas gillnets caught relatively few fish later in the sampling season. Moreover, nearly all fish sampled with pots were caught alive undamaged, whereas most gillnet-caught fish experienced damage or mortality. As a conservation measure pot-fishing would enable fishing within close proximity to the Gilbert Bay MPA and the live-release of visually distinguishable Gilbert Bay cod, thereby mitigating against the negative effects of commercial fishing on this protected Atlantic cod population.

Given that cultivated land serves as a strategic resource to ensure national food security, blind emphasis on improvement of food production capacity can lead to soil overutilization and impair other soil functions. Therefore, we took Heilongjiang province as an example to conduct a multi-functional evaluation of soil at the provincial scale. A combination of soil, climate, topography, land use, and remote sensing data were used to evaluate the functions of primary productivity, provision and cycling of nutrients, provision of functional and intrinsic biodiversity, water purification and regulation, and carbon sequestration and regulation of cultivated land in 2018. We designed a soil function discriminant matrix, constructed the supply-demand ratio, and evaluated the current status of supply and demand of soil functions. Soil functions demonstrated a distribution pattern of high grade in the northeast and low grade in the southwest, mostly in second-level areas. The actual supply of primary productivity functions in 71.32% of the region cannot meet the current needs of the population. The dominant function of soil in 34.89% of the area is water purification and regulation, and most of the cultivated land belongs to the functional balance region. The results presented herein provide a theoretical basis for optimization of land patterns and improvement of cultivated land use management on a large scale, and is of great significance to the sustainable use of black soil resources and improvement of comprehensive benefits.

22 pages.-- Under a Creative Commons license, With the depletion of many commercial fish stocks and an increasing demand for marine protein for human consumption, cephalopods have become more important as a fishery resource. In EU waters, cephalopod stocks are not routinely assessed and exploitation of these species by large-scale fisheries is largely unregulated. For sustainable exploitation, adequate assessment and scientifically-supported management strategies are needed. However, there is still a lack of data on stock status and inadequate knowledge of the life history and ecology of these species. The present review examined more than 200 scientific articles, on life history and ecology of European cephalopods, published since 2013. It describes recent contributions to knowledge in the context of previously identified research priorities, along with recent advances towards sustainable fishing and aquaculture. It also identifies outstanding knowledge gaps. While some priority areas, such as the development of the species identification guides and evaluation of climate change impacts on cephalopods, have seen significant advances, other challenges remain for the future. These include monitoring of the life history traits and fishery status for the main commercially exploited species in the area, implementation of improved species identification methods during scientific surveys and fisheries monitoring, development of tools to identify stock units, and the study of the environmental and anthropogenic impacts on the stocks of cephalopods inhabiting European waters, This review was conducted under the auspices of ICES WGCEPH. The study reported on in this paper investigated smallholder farmers’ access to extension services. The study sought to distinguish the varying degrees of access to services of smallholder farmers engaged in different production systems, that is, home gardening, field cropping, and livestock production. The study was conducted in Raymond Mhlaba Local Municipality in the Eastern Cape, specifically in two communities, namely Ngcabasa and Phathikhala villages. Research activities included a survey of 100 farmers as well as focus group discussions. Employing logistic regression analysis, the study aimed to understand what influences whether or not a smallholder farmer accesses extension. The study also used various types of comparative statistics (T-test) to assess the implications of access to extension support, for instance for production and farm income. The main findings of the study were that 68% of the farming households interviewed in Ngcabasa and 71% of those in Phathikhala had access to extension services. Farmers who had access to extension had more farm income in both enterprises compared to those who had no access to extension services. From the regression analysis, farmers who were more likely to receive extension support appeared to be those who were older, those with less education, and those farming with livestock.

The objective of the study was to establish the actors’ roles and functions in improved rice varieties innovation system in the Eastern Zone of Tanzania. The target population samples for the study comprised of household heads (n = 340) and other key identified actors (n = 99). The research design was a convergent parallel mixed method. Face-to-face interviews, focus group discussions and documentary review were used to collect the data. The findings indicate weak or inability of Agricultural Seed Agency, TANSEED International Ltd, Quality Declared Seed producers in seed multiplication and distribution and agro-dealers were not selling quality rice seeds, thereby resulting in low availability and high prices of the same. Also, the findings show weak participation of farmers, agro-dealers, traders and millers in the functions of guidance of the search and rice varieties development, and the limited number of market actors and weak credit mobilization for farmers to invest in IRVs. The study recommends for the Government of Tanzania to create enabling environment that enhances participation of all key actors in the processes of guidance of the search and rice varieties development; linking farmers with external markets; and enhancing the farmers’ access to credit facilities by working on the obstacles hampering farmers from accessing loans from financial institutions.

Many proponents of organic farming claim that it is a sustainable alternative to conventional agriculture due to its reliance on natural agro-inputs, such as manure based fertilizers and organic pesticides. However, in this analysis we argue that although particular organic farming practices clearly benefit ecosystems and human consumers, the social context in which some organic farms develop, limit the potential environmental benefits of organic agriculture. Specifically, we argue that certified organic farming’s increased reliance on agro-inputs, such as organic fertilizers and pesticides, reduces its ability to decrease global water pollution. We review recent research that demonstrates the environmental consequences of specific organic practices, as well as literature showing that global organic farming is increasing its reliance on agro-inputs, and contend that organic farming has its own metabolic rift with natural water systems similar to conventional agriculture. We use a fixed-effects panel regression model to explore how recent rises in certified organic farmland correlate to water pollution (measured as biochemical oxygen demand). Our findings indicate that increases in the proportion of organic farmland over time increases water pollution. We conclude that this may be a result of organic farms increasing their reliance on non-farm agro-inputs, such as fertilizers.

This paper investigates differences in value relevance of predictive stock return models depending on which firm size proxy (or proxies) is used, these being market value (MV), total book assets (TBA) and market value of total book assets (MVTA). Over the 27 year period of 1989–2015, MV provides higher value relevance in predicting future returns, while TBA provides higher value relevance when limited to large firms. Moreover, results reveal incremental explanatory power of approximately 27% when TBA are added to a one-year-ahead returns model already containing MV. The increase is 60% when examining only the last 10 years of the sample period. The findings of this study will help future accounting and finance research that uses predictive return models and potentially allow investors to make better resource allocation decisions leading to higher risk adjusted returns. In addition, the findings related to TBA will add to the debate on whether standard setters should place more emphasis on the valuation of assets and liabilities relative to earnings.

The objective of this work was to evaluate the agronomic characteristics of maize intercropping with Eucalyptus urophylla at agroforestry system in two triple row distance (alleys) at different sampling distances and positions in relation to the eucalyptus external row (transect), and three positions in relation to the cardinal points: east side, west side and middle. Eucalyptus (E. urophylla) seedlings were planted with spacing of 1.5 m between plants and 3.0 m between rows (triple rows) and two triple row distances: 16.5 and 37.1 m apart, with the spatial exposure of the rows towards north and south, ranging from 888 to 464 plants ha-1. It was observed that treatments differed in relation to the number of ears ha-1 and grain yield in both seasons. In addition, in relation to the final plant density ha-1, in the 2014/2015 season, the maize at 4.2 m distance from eucalyptus at 16.5 m triple row distance had lower number of ears ha-1 and grain yield, and maize at 8.2 m from eucalyptus at 37.1 m triple row distance had greater number of ears and grain yield. The cardinal positions (W/E) in relation to the eucalyptus did not influence the agronomic characteristics of the maize. Key words: Cropping systems, integrated systems, Zea mays.

Discovering new medicinal sources from food wastes is a beneficial and valuable way instead of their disposal. Fruits and vegetables waste can be an inexpensive and readily available source of bioactive compounds to be used in pharmaceutical industries. The aim of this study is to highlight the in vitro antioxidant, cytotoxic, and antimicrobial activities of the total extracts of banana peels (Musa acuminate), carrot peels (Daucus carota) and golden berry husk (Physalis peruviana) besides evaluating their in vivo acute and chronic toxicity profiles as well as their antimutagenic activity. Also, we investigated their phenolic and flavonoid contents spectrophotometrically and by HPLC. Results showed that D. carota peels revealed the highest antioxidant activity (29.903 mg TE/g) using DPPH free radical scavenging assay. Cytotoxic outcomes (SulphoRhodamine-B method) showed that the highest cytotoxic activity of M. acuminate peels (IC50: 20.7 μg/mL) was exerted on HEPG2 cell line, where D. carota peels (IC50: 18.8 μg/mL) showed the highest cytotoxic activity on PC-3 cell line. In addition, pH. peruviana husk (IC50: 10.5 ± 1.0 μg/mL) showed a potent cytotoxic activity on HCT-116 that is non-significant from the standard Doxorubicin (IC50: 11.5 ± 0.8 μg/mL). For the antimicrobial activity (agar diffusion assay), most of the total extracts revealed notable activities against all tested pathogens relative to the standards; ciprofloxacin and ketoconazole, specially Ph. peruviana husk that showed a potent inhibitory activity (inhibition zone diameter of 29 mm.) against C. albicans even more than the standard ketoconazole (inhibition zone diameter of 28 mm.). These promising biological activities are mainly related to the high content of flavonoids and phenolic compounds identified and quantified in their total extracts. Moreover, the three extracts proved their in vivo safety on the short and long terms as well as their possible antimutagenic effect on the genotoxicity of the drug cyclophosphamide (CP) in both bone marrow cells and spermatocyte cells.

The vetiver (Chrysopogon zizanioides (L.) Roberty) essential oil is obtained from its roots by hydro- or steam distillation. Its oil is used in cosmetics, perfumery and food industries, deodorants, soaps, cold drinks, and toilet articles. The present investigations' objective was to estimate essential oil yielding stability and the identification of environment-specific vetiver genotypes. Testing of genotypes under different years was done using additive main effect and multiplicative interaction model, genotype main effect with the genotype-by-environment interaction, and biplot statistical models for the stability of the essential oil yield. The results from both models showed that the best stable genotypes for the high essential oil were G 10, G 12, G 14, and G 15, respectively. The essential oil of the genotypes, G 10, G 14, and G 15 were rich for khusimol, Khusol, khusimone and khusian-2-ol in G 10; khusilal, α-cedrenal, α-cedrenol, khusol, khusitone in G 14, and khusilal, khusimol, α-cedrenal, α-cedrenol,khusol, khusitone in G 15 along with minor compounds having diverse aromatic characters. The two new compounds, namely, α-cedrenal and α-cedrenol were identified first in the Indian vetiver, while the line G 12 possessed khusilal and khusol as the major compounds. Optimal stock investment decisions rely on assessments of the distribution of expected returns. Using a representative sample, we find over half the US population cannot answer simple questions on expected stock returns. Respondents who are unable to make any return prediction, who cannot answer questions on the distribution of expected returns, or who reveal unlikely distributional beliefs participate less in the stock market and have smaller stock investments. However, overoptimistic investors are more likely to participate in the stock market and have larger stock investments. These results persist after controlling for financial literacy, intelligence, education, and demographics. People who are ignorant about stock return distribution are more likely to invest in equities if they have higher levels of trust. Therefore, trust can substitute for cognition as a factor positively associated with individuals’ propensity to invest.
