Abstract

In this paper, we discuss a possibility to improve constraints on spin-dependent short-range interactions in the range of 1 - 200 micrometer significantly. For such interactions, our constraints are without competition at the moment. They were obtained through the observation of gravitationally bound states of ultracold neutrons. Abstract

Limits on $\beta^+$EC and ECEC processes in $^{112}$Sn and on $\beta^-\beta^-$ decay of $^{124}$Sn to the excited states of $^{124}$Te have been obtained using a 380 cm$^3$ HPGe detector and an external source consisting of natural tin. A limit with 90% C.L. on the $^{112}$Sn half-life of $0.92\times 10^{20}$ y for the ECEC(0$\nu$) transition to the $0^+_3$ excited state in $^{112}$Cd (1871.0 keV) has been established. This transition is discussed in the context of a possible enhancement of the decay rate by several orders of magnitude given that the ECEC$(0\nu)$ process is nearly degenerate with an excited state in the daughter nuclide. Prospects for investigating such a process in future experiments are discussed. The $\beta^-\beta^-$ decay limits for $^{124}$Sn to the excited states of $^{124}$Te were obtained on the level of $(0.8-1.2)\times 10^{21}$ y at the 90% C.L., Comment: 17 pages, 5 figures

Abstract

For the first time, limits on double-beta processes in $^{74}$Se have been obtained using a 400 cm$^3$ HPGe detector and an external source consisting of natural selenium powder. At a confidence level of 90%, they are $1.9\times 10^{18}$ y for the $\beta^+$EC$(0\nu + 2\nu)$ transition to the ground state, $7.7\times 10^{18}$ y for the ECEC($2\nu$) transition to the $2^+_1$ excited state in $^{74}$Ge (595.8 keV), $1.1\times 10^{19}$ y for the ECEC($0\nu$) transition to the $2^+_1$ excited state in $^{74}$Ge (595.8 keV) and $5.5\times 10^{18}$ y for the ECEC($2\nu$) and ECEC($0\nu$) transitions to the $2^+_2$ excited state in $^{74}$Ge (1204.2 keV). The last transition is discussed in association with a possible enhancement of the decay rate, in this case by several orders of magnitude, because the ECEC$(0\nu)$ process is nearly degenerate with an excited state in the daughter nuclide. Abstract

We consider the problem of axion production by bremsstrahlung emission in a nuclear medium. The usual assumption of a massless axion is replaced by more general hypotheses, so that we can describe the emission process for axions with mass up to a few MeV. We point out that in certain physical situations the contribution from non-zero mass is non-negligible. In particular, in the mechanism for the production of Gamma Ray Bursts via emission of heavy axions the axion mass m_a ~ 1MeV is comparable with the temperature of the nuclear medium and thus can not be disregarded. Looking at our results we find, in fact, a fairly considerable reduction of the axion luminosity in that mechanism., 16 pages, 5 figures
