Abstract

For the problem of two or more nuclear reactions producing the same product nucleus in the actual cross-section measurements of nuclear reactions, a method is given for subtracting the effect of interference reactions that produce the same product nucleus on the cross-section measurements of the target nuclear reaction. The cross-section values were measured for the 183W(n,p)183Ta reaction at four different neutron energies from 13.5 to 14.8 MeV using the activation technique. In the process of calculating the cross-section data, the effects of the interference reactions 184W(n,d)183Ta and 184W(n,n+p)183Ta were subtracted using the above method. At the same time, the effect of the 186W(n, α)183Hf → β − 183Ta process was also subtracted by using the previously developed method. Analysis and comparison show that our experimental cross-section values for the 183W(n,p)183Ta reaction agree with the previous results in the case of using the samples of enriched 183W at close energies. Discrepancies in the previous cross-section data of the 183W(n,p)183Ta reaction are clarified, and the recommendation excitation function curve for the 183W(n,p)183Ta reaction is given by adopting the nuclear theoretical model program system TALYS-1.95. 2. Study of (n, p), (n, α) and (n, 2n) reactions of stable and radio-nuclides produced in a reactor environment.

Abstract

The knowledge of the neutron-induced reaction cross-section is important, especially, for the fusion and fission reactor technologies. In the absence of experimental data or for cases where measurements are difficult, theoretical predictions of nuclear cross-sections are needed to be improved upon using refined model calculations or effective semi-empirical formulas. Accurate, physics-based modelling of neutron-induced reactions is key to all nuclear science and technology applications. In the present work, the excitation functions for (n, p), (n, α ) and (n, 2n) reactions up to 20 MeV for stable isotopes of Ti, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, etc. are calculated using the EMPIRE-3.2 nuclear reaction model code using optimised values of input parameters. The experimental data available in EXFOR database for these stable isotopes are reproduced to determine the optimum parameters. The optimised parameters, so obtained, are then used to calculate the reaction cross-sections for a series of unstable nuclides for the incident neutron energy of 1–20 MeV. The calculated cross-sections are compared with the evaluated data available in literature (ENDF). We have also compared our results with the estimated cross-sections using available empirical formulas. Based on the calculations, we recommend a reliable set of parameters to estimate the (n, p), (n, α ) and (n, 2n) cross-sections for unstable nuclides in the mass region A ∼ 40–70. Abstract

Neutron-induced nuclear reaction cross section data on dysprosium (Dy) target material are needed for the development and design of reactors, because of using Dy such as an absorbing material for the control rods in reactors. Furthermore, these data are important in terms of improving the definition of neutron–particle interaction. In this framework, the excitation functions of 156,158,160–164Dy(n, p)156,158,160–164Tb reactions were theoretically calculated using TALYS 1.8 and EMPIRE 3.2 Malta nuclear reaction codes. In addition, effects of different level density models on the reaction cross sections were also investigated. Therefore, the obtained theoretical cross sections are compared with the experimental cross sections found in the literature. Besides, (n, p) cross section systematics, which was proposed in our previous article and in the literature, has been used for obtaining the reaction cross sections at energies of around 14 MeV. Abstract

International audience; The 60 MeV proton beam delivered by the RADEF facility of the University of Jyväskylä (Finland) was used to measure the radiation effects on the counter components of the V0 detector of ALICE. There are the scintillator BC404, the wavelength shifting fibres BCF9929A and the optical fibres BCF98 from Bicron (Saint-Gobain). The light yield and the time resolution given by a counter of the inner ring of the V0C array, mounted within a dedicated device, were measured as a function of the radiation dose up to about 300 krad. A global light attenuation of the order of 30% can be anticipated during 10 years of ALICE running.

Abstract

International audience; Absolute cross sections, energy spectra, and angular distributions have been measured for $^{1,2,3}$H, $^{3,4,6}$He, $^{6,7,8,9}$Li and $^{7,9,10}$Be isotopes produced in 1.2 GeV proton-induced spallation reactions with targets between Al and Th. Results of simulation calculations with the intra-nuclear cascade code INCL2.0 coupled to the statistical model GEMINI are in good agreement with these data, as to charged-particle evaporation, mean excitation energy, and mean linear momentum transfer. The pre-equilibrium emission of composite particles, not accounted for in these simulations, however, typically contributes to the total production of composite particles by 40–60% for $^{2}$H and $^{3}$He, 20–40% for $^{3}$H, 5–20% for $^{4}$He, and about 15–25% for Li and Be. The composite pre-equilibrium particles together carry off a mean energy of up to 50 MeV, i.e., about 30% compared to the mean energy released by particle evaporation. For deuterons, pre-equilibrium emission is shown to be well described by surface coalescence while definitely other mechanisms are required for $^{4}$He and heavier clusters.
