The constructing of artificial channels with gating functions is an important undertaking for gaining insight into biological process and achieving efficient bionic functions. Typically, controllable transport within such channels relies on either electrostatic or specific interactions between the transporting species and the channel. However, for molecules with weak interactions with the channel, achieving precise gating of the transport remains a significant challenge. In this regard, this study proposes a voltage gating membrane of two‐dimensional channels that selectively transport of neutral molecules glucose with a dimension of 0.60 nm. The permeation of glucose is switched on/off by electrochemically manipulating the water dynamics in the nanochannel. Voltage driven‐intercalation of ion into the two‐dimensional channel causes water to stratify and move closer to the channel walls, thereby resulting in the channel center being emptier for glucose diffusion. Due to the sub‐nanometer size dimension of the channel, selective permeation of glucose over sucrose is also achieved in this approach. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Two-dimensional (2D) atomic threshold switching field-effect transistors (ATS-FETs), which integrate 2D FET with threshold switching (TS) devices, have garnered attention as part of the subthreshold swing (SS) improvement for next-generation low-power devices. For industrial applications of 2D ATS-FET, it is important to secure the threshold voltage (Vth) modulation technique. Here, Vth engineering is performed by altering the counter electrode (CE) of a TS device, and the electrical performance of the ATS-FET is systematically investigated. The work function difference between the active electrode and CE alters the internal electric field (E-field) formed between these two electrodes. This severely affects the metal ion migration of the active electrode and induces the Vth shift of the ATS-FET. Because the proposed Vth adjusting technique does not affect the channel material, the MoS2 ATS-FET with the proposed technique can shift Vth while maintaining a high on–off ratio of >105 A on average and achieves an ultra-low average SS of ∼10.929 mV/dec. Moreover, the SS variation due to the random interface traps between the channel and gate dielectric is sufficiently suppressed. This study is expected to be a cornerstone for ATS-FET research by offering a compact platform to adjust Vth without deteriorating steep-slope characteristics.

The breakup mechanism of a microbubble in a 2D channel, was studied through visualization experiments. A venturi-shaped nozzle made with a 3D printer in a 2D channel was employed, and the pressure data and visualization images were analyzed. It is compared that he bubble behavior and size distribution according to the change in the rear-end exit angle of the venturi-shaped nozzle. As the exit angle increased, the bubble size decreased. However, it was confirmed that wake flow was formed in the venturi channel with an exit angle above 20°. By analyzing the visualization, we confirmed that the air bubbles interacted with the central flow and split into pieces. To maximize this process, a flare-shaped diffuser was designed and evaluated. The bubble breakup performance of the flared diffuser was better than that of the linear exit angle, in terms of the bubble size. It was a flared diffuser that satisfied the conditions for maximizing the bubble breakup process in a water flow rate of (35 L/min) and an air flow rate (0.1 L/MIN) experiments. Based on the results, it is expected that the limitations of the venturi-shaped microbubble generator can be overcome.

Abstract For next‐generation electronics and optoelectronics, 2D‐layered nanomaterial‐based field effect transistors (FETs) have garnered attention as promising candidates owing to their remarkable properties. However, their subthreshold swings (SS) cannot be lower than 60 mV/decade owing to the limitation of the thermionic carrier injection mechanism, and it remains a major challenge in 2D‐layered nanomaterial‐based transistors. Here, a gate‐connected MoS2 atomic threshold switching FET using a nitrogen‐doped HfO2‐based threshold switching (TS) device is developed. The proposed device achieves an extremely low SS of 11 mV/decade and a high on‐off ratio of ≈106 by maintaining a high on‐state drive current due to the steep switching of the TS device at the gate region. In particular, the proposed device can function as an infrared detectable phototransistor with excellent optical properties. The proposed device is expected to pave the way for the development of future 2D channel‐based electrical and optical transistors.

Efficient mono- and divalent ion separation is pivotal for environmental conservation and energy utilization. Two-dimensional (2D) materials featuring interlayer nanochannels exhibit unique water and ion transport properties, rendering them highly suitable for water treatment membranes. In this work, we incorporated polydopamine/polyethylenimine (PDA/PEI) copolymers into 2D montmorillonite (MMT) nanosheet interlayer channels through electrostatic interactions and bioinspired bonding. A modified laminar structure was formed on the substrate surface via a straightforward vacuum filtration. The electrodialysis experiments reveal that these membranes could achieve monovalent permselectivity of 11.06 and Na + flux of 2.09 × 10 -8 mol cm -2 s -1 . The enhanced permselectivity results from the synergistic effect of electrostatic and steric hindrance effect. In addition, the interaction between the PDA/PEI copolymer and the MMT nanosheet ensures the long-term operational stability of the membranes. Theoretical simulations reveal that Na + has a lower migration energy barrier and higher migration rate for the modified MMT-based membrane compared to Mg 2+ . This work presents a novel approach for the development of monovalent permselective membranes.

The millimeter wave (mmWave) frequency band spanning from 30 to 300 GHz constitutes a substantial portion of the unused frequency spectrum, which is an important resource for future wireless communication systems in order to fulfill the escalating capacity demand. Given the improvements in integrated components and enhanced power efficiency at high frequencies, wireless systems can operate in the mmWave frequency band. In this paper, we present a survey of the mmWave propagation characteristics, channel modeling, and design guidelines, such as system and antenna design considerations for mmWave, including the link budget of the network, which are essential for mmWave communication systems. We commence by introducing the main channel propagation characteristics of mmWaves followed by channel modeling and design guidelines. Then, we report on the main measurement and modeling campaigns conducted in order to understand the mmWave band’s properties and present the associated channel models. We survey the different channel models focusing on the channel models available for the 28, 38, 60, and 73 GHz frequency bands. Finally, we present the mmWave channel model and its challenges in the context of mmWave communication systems design. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Two-dimensional (2D) subnanometer channels allow unique mass transport promising for molecular sieving. New 2D channels of MoS2 nanosheets allow one to understand molecular transmission and separation, unlike the graphene oxide counterpart containing various defects and cationic metal contaminants. Membranes from layered MoS2 platelets show extraordinary stability in an aqueous environment and compatibility with polymer filters, both beneficial to efficient manufacturing. Sharing gas-tightness and unimpeded water vapor permeation with a graphene oxide membrane, our lamellar MoS2 membrane demonstrates a molecular sieving property for organic vapor for the first time. The MoS2 membrane also reveals diffusion selectivity of aqueous ions, attributable to the energy penalty in bulk-to-2D dimensional transition. These newly revealed properties of the lamellar membrane full of angstrom-sized 2D channels point to membrane technology applications for energy and environment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: Heat-transfer enhancement in a uniformly heated slot mini-channel due to vortices shed from an adiabatic circular cylinder is numerically investigated. The effects of gap spacing between the cylinder and bottom wall on wall heat transfer and pressure drop are systemically studied. Numerical simulations are performed at , and a blockage ratio of . Results within the thermally developing flow region show heat transfer augmentation compared to the plane channel. It was found that when the obstacle is placed in the middle of the duct, maximum heat transfer enhancement from channel walls is achieved. Displacement of circular cylinder towards the bottom wall leads to the suppression of the vortex shedding, the establishment of a steady flow and a reduction of both wall heat transfer and pressure drop. Performance analysis indicates that the proposed heat transfer enhancement mechanism is beneficial for low-Prandtl-number fluids. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Restacked two-dimensional (2D) materials represent a new class of membranes for water-ion separations. Understanding the interplay between the 2D membrane's structure and the constituent material's surface chemistry to its ion sieving properties is crucial for further membrane development. Here, we reveal, and tune via covalent functionalization, the structure of MoS 2 -based membranes. We find features on both the ∼1 nm (interlayer spacing) and ∼100 nm (mesoporous voids between layers) length scales that evolve with the hydration level. The functional groups act as permanent molecular spacers, preventing local impermeability caused by irreversible restacking and promoting the uniform rehydration of the membrane. Molecular dynamics simulations show that the choice of functional group tunes the structure of water within the MoS 2 channel and consequently determines the hydrated interlayer spacing. We demonstrate that MoS 2 membranes functionalized with acetic acid have consistently ∼92% rejection of Na 2 SO 4 with a flux of ∼1.5 lm -2 hr -1 bar -1 .
