The low luminosity of Uranus is still a puzzling phenomenon and has key implications for the thermal and compositional gradients within the planet. Recent studies have shown that planetary volatiles become ionically conducting under conditions that are present in the ice giants. Rapidly growing electrical conductivity with increasing depth would couple zonal flows to the background magnetic field in the planets, inducing poloidal and toroidal field perturbations $\mathbf{B}^{\omega} = \mathbf{B}^{\omega}_P + \mathbf{B}^{\omega}_T$ via the $\omega$-effect. Toroidal perturbations $\mathbf{B}^{\omega}_T$ are expected to diffuse downwards and produce poloidal fields $\mathbf{B}^{\alpha}_P$ through turbulent convection via the $\alpha$-effect, comparable in strength to those of the $\omega$-effect; $\mathbf{B}^{\omega}_P$. To estimate the strength of poloidal field perturbations for various Uranus models in the literature, we generate wind decay profiles based on Ohmic dissipation constraints assuming an ionically conducting H$_2$-He-H$_2$O interior. Due to the higher metallicities in outer regions of hot Uranus models, zonal winds need to decay to $\sim$0.1% of their surface values in the outer 1% of Uranus to admit decay solutions in the Ohmic framework. Our estimates suggest that colder Uranus models could potentially have poloidal field perturbations that reach up to $\mathcal{O}(0.1)$ of the background magnetic field in the most extreme case. The possible existence of poloidal field perturbations spatially correlated with Uranus' zonal flows could be used to constrain Uranus' interior structure, and presents a further case for the $\textit{in situ}$ exploration of Uranus., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS. 6 pages, 2 figures. We investigate the possibility of detecting the gravitational influence of dark matter (DM) on the trajectory of prospective Doppler ranging missions to Uranus and Neptune. In addition, we estimate the constraints such a mission can provide on modified and massive gravity theories via extra-precession measurements using orbiters around the ice giants. We employ Monte Carlo-Markov Chain methods to reconstruct fictitious spacecraft trajectories in a simplified solar system model with varying amounts of DM. We characterise the noise on the Doppler link by the Allan deviation $\sigma_{\rm A}$, scaled on the Cassini-era value of $\sigma^{\rm{Cass}}_{\rm A}= 3 \times 10^{-15}$. Additionally, we compare the precision of prospective extra-precession measurements of Uranus and Neptune with the expected rates from simulations, in the context of modifications to the inverse square law. We estimate that the prospective mission will be sensitive to DM densities of the order of $\rho_{\rm{DM}} \sim 9 \times 10^{-20} \, (\sigma_{\rm A}/\sigma_{\rm A}^{\rm{Cass}}) $ kg/m$^3$, while the $1\sigma$ bound on the expected galactic density of $\rho_{\rm{DM}} \sim 5 \times 10^{-22}$ kg/m$^3$ decreases as $1.0 \times 10^{-20} \, (\sigma_{\rm A}/\sigma^{\rm{Cass}}_{\rm A})^{0.8}$ kg/m$^3$. An improvement of two to three orders of magnitude from the baseline Allan deviation would guarantee a local detection of DM. Only a moderate reduction in ranging noise is required to rule out Milgrom's interpolating function with solar system based observations, and improve constraints the graviton mass beyond current local- or gravitational wave-based measurements. Observations and simulations have demonstrated that star formation in galaxies must be actively suppressed to prevent the formation of over-massive galaxies. Galactic outflows driven by stellar feedback or supermassive black hole accretion are often invoked to regulate the amount of cold molecular gas available for future star formation, but may not be the only relevant quenching processes in all galaxies. We present the discovery of vast molecular tidal features extending up to 64 kpc outside of a massive z=0.646 post-starburst galaxy that recently concluded its primary star-forming episode. The tidal tails contain (1.2 +/- 0.1)x10^10 Msun of molecular gas, 47 +/- 5 % of the total cold gas reservoir of the system. Both the scale and magnitude of the molecular tidal features are unprecedented compared to all known nearby or high-redshift merging systems. We infer that the cold gas was stripped from the host galaxies during the merger, which is most likely responsible for triggering the initial burst phase and the subsequent suppression of star formation. While only a single example, this result shows that galaxy mergers can regulate the cold gas contents in distant galaxies by directly removing a large fraction of the molecular gas fuel, and plausibly suppress star formation directly, a qualitatively different physical mechanism than feedback-driven outflows., Published in ApJL, 8 pages, 5 figures

We use FIRE simulations to study disk formation in z~0, Milky Way-mass galaxies, and conclude that a key ingredient for the formation of thin stellar disks is the ability for accreting gas to develop an aligned angular momentum distribution via internal cancellation *prior* to joining the galaxy. Among galaxies with a high fraction (>70%) of their young stars in a thin disk (h/R~0.1) we find that: (i) hot, virial-temperature gas dominates the inflowing gas mass on halo scales (>~20 kpc), with radiative losses offset by compression heating; (ii) this hot accretion proceeds until angular momentum support slows inward motion, at which point the gas cools to T~10^4 K or less; (iii) prior to cooling, the accreting gas develops an angular momentum distribution that is aligned with the galaxy disk, and while cooling transitions from a quasi-spherical spatial configuration to a more flattened, disk-like configuration. We show that the existence of this "rotating cooling flow" accretion mode is strongly correlated with the fraction of stars forming in a thin disk among a sample of 17 z~0 galaxies spanning a halo mass range of 10^10.5 solar masses to 10^12 solar masses, or a stellar mass range 10^8 solar masses to 10^11 solar masses. Notably, galaxies with a thick disk or irregular morphology do not undergo significant angular momentum alignment of gas prior to accretion and show no correspondence between halo gas cooling and flattening. Our results suggest that rotating cooling flows (or, more generally, rotating subsonic flows) that become coherent and angular momentum-supported prior to accretion onto the galaxy are likely a necessary condition for the formation of thin, star-forming disk galaxies in a LambdaCDM universe., 17 pages, 11 figures. Peters' formula is an analytical estimate of the time-scale of gravitational wave (GW)-induced coalescence of binary systems. It is used in countless applications, where the convenience of a simple formula outweighs the need for precision. However, many promising sources of the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA), such as supermassive black hole binaries and extreme mass-ratio inspirals (EMRIs), are expected to enter the LISA band with highly eccentric ($e \gtrsim$ 0.9) and highly relativistic orbits. These are exactly the two limits in which Peters' estimate performs the worst. In this work, we expand upon previous results and give simple analytical fits to quantify how the inspiral time-scale is affected by the relative 1.5 post-Newtonian (PN) hereditary fluxes and spin-orbit couplings. We discuss several cases that demand a more accurate GW time-scale. We show how this can have a major influence on quantities that are relevant for LISA event-rate estimates, such as the EMRI critical semi-major axis. We further discuss two types of environmental perturbations that can play a role in the inspiral phase: the gravitational interaction with a third massive body and the energy loss due to dynamical friction and torques from a surrounding gas medium ubiquitous in galactic nuclei. With the aid of PN corrections to the time-scale in vacuum, we find simple analytical expressions for the regions of phase space in which environmental perturbations are of comparable strength to the effects of any particular PN order, being able to qualitatively reproduce the results of much more sophisticated analyses., Accepted for publication in MNRAS. Understanding the distribution of angular momentum during the formation of planetary systems is a key topic in astrophysics. Data from the $\textit{Kepler}$ and $\textit{Gaia}$ missions allow to investigate whether stellar rotation is correlated with the presence of planets around Sun-like stars. Here, we perform a statistical analysis of the rotation period of 493 planet-hosting stars. These are matched to a control sample, without detected planets, with similar effective temperatures, masses, radii, metallicities, and ages. We find that planet-hosting stars rotate on average $1.63 \pm 0.40$ days slower. The difference in rotation is statistically significant both in samples including and not including planets confirmed by radial velocity follow-up observations. We also analyse the dependence of rotation distribution on various stellar and planetary properties. Our results could potentially be explained by planet detection biases depending on the rotation period of their host stars in both RV and transit methods. The origin of Uranus and Neptune is still unknown. In particular, it has been challenging for planet formation models to form the planets in their current radial distances within the expected lifetime of the solar nebula. In this paper, we simulate the in situ formation of Uranus and Neptune via pebble accretion and show that both planets can form within ∼3 Myr at their current locations, and have final compositions that are consistent with the heavy element to H–He ratios predicted by structure models. We find that Uranus and Neptune could have been formed at their current locations. In several cases a few earth masses (M ⊕ ) of heavy elements are missing, suggesting that Uranus and/or Neptune may have accreted ∼1–3 M⊕ of heavy elements after their formation via planetesimal accretion and/or giant impacts.

Observations and models of giant planets indicate that such objects are enriched in heavy elements compared to solar abundances. The prevailing view is that giant planets accreted multiple Earth masses of heavy elements after the end of core formation. Such late solid enrichment is commonly explained by the accretion of planetesimals. Planetesimals are expected to form at the edges of planetary gaps, and here we address the question of whether these planetesimals can be accreted in large enough amounts to explain the inferred high heavy element contents of giant planets. We perform a series of N-body simulations of the dynamics of planetesimals and planets during the planetary growth phase, taking into account gas drag as well as the enhanced collision cross-section caused by the extended envelopes. We consider the growth of Jupiter and Saturn via gas accretion after reaching the pebble isolation mass and we include their migration in an evolving disk. We find that the accretion efficiency of planetesimals formed at planetary gap edges is very low: less than 10% of the formed planetesimals are accreted even in the most favorable cases, which in our model corresponds to a few Earth-masses. When planetesimals are assumed to form beyond the feeding zone of the planets, extending to a few Hill radii from a planet, accretion becomes negligible. Furthermore, we find that the accretion efficiency increases when the planetary migration distance is increased and that the efficiency does not increase when the planetesimal radii are decreased. Based on these results we conclude that it is difficult to explain the large heavy element content of giant planets with planetesimal accretion during the gas accretion phase. We present results from GigaEris, a cosmological, N-body hydrodynamical "zoom-in" simulation of the formation of a Milky Way-sized galaxy halo with unprecedented resolution, encompassing of order a billion particles within the refined region. The simulation employs a modern implementation of smoothed-particle hydrodynamics, including metal-line cooling and metal and thermal diffusion. We focus on the early assembly of the galaxy, down to redshift z = 4.4. The simulated galaxy has properties consistent with extrapolations of the main sequence of star-forming galaxies to higher redshifts and levels off to a star formation rate of similar to 60 M (circle dot) yr(-1) at z = 4.4. A compact, thin rotating stellar disk with properties analogous to those of low-redshift systems arises already at z similar to 8. The galaxy rapidly develops a multi-component structure, and the disk, at least at these early stages, does not grow "upside-down" as often reported in the literature. Rather, at any given time, newly born stars contribute to sustain a thin disk. The kinematics reflect the early, ubiquitous presence of a thin disk, as a stellar disk component with v ( phi )/sigma ( R ) larger than unity is already present at z similar to 9-10. Our results suggest that high-resolution spectro-photometric observations of very high-redshift galaxies should find thin rotating disks, consistent with the recent discovery of cold rotating gas disks by ALMA. The standard cold dark matter plus cosmological constant model predicts that galaxies form within dark-matter haloes, and that low-mass galaxies are more dark-matter dominated than massive ones. The unexpected discovery of two low-mass galaxies lacking dark matter immediately provoked concerns about the standard cosmology and ignited explorations of alternatives, including self-interacting dark matter and modified gravity. Apprehension grew after several cosmological simulations using the conventional model failed to form adequate numerical analogues with comparable internal characteristics (stellar masses, sizes, velocity dispersions and morphologies). Here we show that the standard paradigm naturally produces galaxies lacking dark matter with internal characteristics in agreement with observations. Using a state-of-the-art cosmological simulation and a meticulous galaxy-identification technique, we find that extreme close encounters with massive neighbours can be responsible for this. We predict that approximately 30 percent of massive central galaxies (with at least 1e11 solar masses in stars) harbour at least one dark-matter-deficient satellite (with 1e8 - 1e9 solar masses in stars). This distinctive class of galaxies provides an additional layer in our understanding of the role of interactions in shaping galactic properties. The recently adopted Ariel ESA mission will measure the atmospheric composition of a large number of exoplanets. This information will then be used to better constrain planetary bulk compositions. While the connection between the composition of a planetary atmosphere and the bulk interior is still being investigated, the combination of the atmospheric composition with the measured mass and radius of exoplanets will push the field of exoplanet characterisation to the next level, and provide new insights of the nature of planets in our galaxy. Over the past decade, rest-frame color-color diagrams have become popular tools for selecting quiescent galaxies at high redshift, breaking the color degeneracy between quiescent and dust-reddened star-forming galaxies. In this work, we study one such color-color selection tool -- the rest-frame $U-V$ vs. $V-J$ diagram -- by employing mock observations of cosmological galaxy formation simulations. In particular, we conduct numerical experiments assessing both trends in galaxy properties in UVJ space and the color-color evolution of massive galaxies as they quench at redshifts $z\sim 1$--$2$. We find that our models broadly reproduce the observed UVJ diagram at $z=1$--$2$, including (for the first time in a cosmological simulation) reproducing the population of extremely dust-reddened galaxies in the top right of the UVJ diagram. However, our models primarily populate this region with low-mass galaxies and do not produce as clear a bimodality between star-forming and quiescent galaxies as is seen in observations. The former issue is due to an excess of dust in low-mass galaxies and relatively gray attenuation curves in high-mass galaxies, while the latter is due to the overpopulation of the green valley in SIMBA. When investigating the time evolution of galaxies on the UVJ diagram, we find that the quenching pathway on the UVJ diagram is independent of the quenching timescale, and instead dependent primarily on the average specific star formation rate in the 1 Gyr prior to the onset of quenching. Interstellar clouds can act as target material for hadronic cosmic rays; gamma rays subsequently produced through inelastic proton-proton collisions and spatially associated with such clouds can provide a key indicator of efficient particle acceleration. However, even in the case that particle acceleration proceeds up to PeV energies, the system of accelerator and nearby target material must fulfil a specific set of conditions in order to produce a detectable gamma-ray flux. In this study, we rigorously characterise the necessary properties of both cloud and accelerator. By using available Supernova Remnant (SNR) and interstellar cloud catalogues, we produce a ranked shortlist of the most promising target systems, those for which a detectable gamma-ray flux is predicted, in the case that particles are accelerated to PeV energies in a nearby SNR. We discuss detection prospects for future facilities including CTA, LHAASO and SWGO; and compare our predictions with known gamma-ray sources. The four interstellar clouds with the brightest predicted fluxes >100 TeV identified by this model are located at (l,b) = (333.46,-0.31), (16.97,0.53), (110.43,1.89) and (336.73,-0.98). These clouds are consistently bright under a range of model scenarios, including variation in the diffusion coefficient and particle spectrum. On average, a detectable gamma-ray flux is more likely for more massive clouds; systems with lower separation distance between the SNR and cloud; and for slightly older SNRs., Accepted for publication in MNRAS. We study cosmological observables on the past light cone of a fixed observer in the context of clustering dark energy. We focus on observables that probe the gravitational field directly, namely the integrated Sachs-Wolfe and non-linear Rees-Sciama effect (ISW-RS), weak gravitational lensing, gravitational redshift and Shapiro time delay. With our purpose-built $N$-body code "$k$-evolution" that tracks the coupled evolution of dark matter particles and the dark energy field, we are able to study the regime of low speed of sound $c_s$ where dark energy perturbations can become quite large. Using ray tracing we produce two-dimensional sky maps for each effect and we compute their angular power spectra. It turns out that the ISW-RS signal is the most promising probe to constrain clustering dark energy properties coded in $w-c_s^2$, as the $\textit{linear}$ clustering of dark energy would change the angular power spectrum by $\sim 30\%$ at low $\ell$ when comparing two different speeds of sound for dark energy. Weak gravitational lensing, Shapiro time-delay and gravitational redshift are less sensitive probes of clustering dark energy, showing variations of a few percent only. The effect of dark energy $\textit{non-linearities}$ in all the power spectra is negligible at low $\ell$, but reaches about $2\%$ and $3\%$, respectively, in the convergence and ISW-RS angular power spectra at multipoles of a few hundred when observed at redshift $\sim 0.85$. The ARCADE2 and LWA1 experiments have claimed an excess over the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) at low radio frequencies. If the cosmological high-redshift contribution to this radio background is between 0.1% and 22% of the CMB at 1.42 GHz, it could explain the tentative EDGES Low-Band detection of the anomalously deep absorption in the 21-cm signal of neutral hydrogen. We use the upper limit on the 21-cm signal from the Epoch of Reionization ($z=9.1$) based on 141 hours of observations with LOFAR to evaluate the contribution of the high redshift Universe to the detected radio background. Marginalizing over astrophysical properties of star-forming halos, we find (at 95% C.L.) that the cosmological radio background can be at most 9.6% of the CMB at 1.42 GHz. This limit rules out strong contribution of the high-redshift Universe to the ARCADE2 and LWA1 measurements. Even though LOFAR places limit on the extra radio background, excess of $0.1-9.6$% over the CMB (at 1.42 GHz) is still allowed and could explain the EDGES Low-Band detection. We also constrain the thermal and ionization state of the gas at $z = 9.1$ and put limits on the properties of the first star-forming objects. Jupiter's atmosphere is enriched with heavy elements by a factor of about 3 compared to proto-solar. The origin of this enrichment and whether it represent the bulk composition of the planetary envelope remain unknown. Internal structure models of Jupiter suggest that its envelope is separated from the deep interior and that the planet is not fully mixed. This implies that Jupiter's atmosphere was enriched with heavy elements just before the end of its formation. Such enrichment can be a result of late planetesimal accretion. However, in-situ Jupiter formation models suggest the decreasing accretion rate with increasing planetary mass, which cannot explain Jupiter's atmospheric enrichment. In this study, we model Jupiter's formation and show that an migration of proto-Jupiter from $\sim$ 20 AU to its current location can lead to a late planetesimal accretion and atmospheric enrichment. Late planetesimal accretion does not occur if proto-Jupiter migrates only a few AU. We suggest that if Jupiter's outermost layer is fully-mixed and is relatively thin (up to $\sim$ 20\% of its mass), such late accretion can explain its measured atmospheric composition. Galaxy sizes correlate closely with the sizes of their parent dark matter haloes, suggesting a link between halo formation and galaxy growth. However, the precise nature of this relation and its scatter remains to be understood fully, especially for low-mass galaxies. We analyse the galaxy-halo size relation for low-mass ($M_\star \sim 10^{7-9} {\rm M_\odot}$) central galaxies over the past 12.5 billion years with the help of cosmological volume simulations (FIREbox) from the Feedback in Realistic Environments (FIRE) project. We find a nearly linear relationship between the half-stellar mass galaxy size $R_{1/2}$ and the parent dark matter halo virial radius $R_{\rm vir}$. This relation evolves only weakly since redshift $z = 5$: $R_{1/2} {\rm kpc} = (0.053\pm0.002)(R_{\rm vir}/35 {\rm kpc})^{0.934\pm0.054}$, with a nearly constant scatter $\langle \sigma \rangle = 0.084 [{\rm dex}]$. Whilst this ratio is similar to what is expected from models where galaxy disc sizes are set by halo angular momentum, the low-mass galaxies in our sample are not angular momentum supported, with stellar rotational to circular velocity ratios $v_{\rm rot} / v_{\rm circ} \sim 0.15$. Introducing redshift as another parameter to the GHSR does not decrease the scatter. Furthermore, this scatter does not correlate with any of the halo properties we investigate -- including spin and concentration -- suggesting that baryonic processes and feedback physics are instead critical in setting the scatter in the galaxy-halo size relation. Given the relatively small scatter and the weak dependence of the galaxy-halo size relation on redshift and halo properties for these low-mass central galaxies, we propose using galaxy sizes as an independent method from stellar masses to infer halo masses., Comment: 14 pages, 9 figures, 3 tables + 3 appendices (5 pages, 5 figures, 2 tables). Assuming a LCDM universe in a single-field inflationary scenario, we compute the three-point correlation function of the observed matter density fluctuation in the squeezed triangular configuration, accounting for all the relativistic effects at the second order in perturbations. This squeezed three-point correlation function characterizes the local-type primordial non-Gaussianity, and it has been extensively debated in literature whether there exists a prominent feature in galaxy clustering on large scales in a single-field inflationary scenario either from the primordial origin or the intrinsic nonlinearity in general relativity. First, we show that theoretical descriptions of galaxy bias are incomplete in general relativity due to ambiguities in spatial gauge choice, while those of cosmological observables are independent of spatial gauge choice. Hence a proper relativistic description of galaxy bias is needed to reach a definitive conclusion in galaxy clustering. Second, we demonstrate that the gauge-invariant calculations of the cosmological observables remain unaffected by extra coordinate transformations like CFC or large diffeomorphism like dilatation. Finally, we show that the relativistic effects associated with light propagation in observations cancel each other, and hence there exists NO non-Gaussian contribution from the so-called projection effects., Comment: 59 pages, no figures, published in JCAP

We use ALMA observations of CO(2-1) in 13 massive ($M_{\star}\gtrsim 10^{11} M_{\odot}$) post-starburst galaxies at $z\sim0.6$ to constrain the molecular gas content in galaxies shortly after they quench their major star-forming episode. The post-starburst galaxies in this study are selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey spectroscopic samples (DR14) based on their spectral shapes, as part of the SQuIGGLE program. Early results showed that two post-starburst galaxies host large H$_2$ reservoirs despite their low inferred star formation rates. Here we expand this analysis to a larger statistical sample of 13 galaxies. Six of the primary targets (45%) are detected, with $M_{H_2}\gtrsim10^9 M_{\odot}$. Given their high stellar masses, this mass limit corresponds to an average gas fraction of $\langle f_{H_2} \equiv M_{H_2}/M_{\star} \rangle \sim7\%$, or ${\sim}14\%$ using lower stellar masses estimates derived from analytic, exponentially declining star formation histories. The gas fraction correlates with the $D_n4000$ spectral index, suggesting that the cold gas reservoirs decrease with time since burst, as found in local K+A galaxies. Star formation histories derived from flexible stellar population synthesis modeling support this empirical finding: galaxies that quenched $\lesssim 150$ Myr prior to observation host detectable CO(2-1) emission, while older post-starburst galaxies are undetected. The large $\mathrm{H_2}$ reservoirs and low star formation rates in the sample imply that the quenching of star formation precedes the disappearance of the cold gas reservoirs. Galaxy mergers are crucial to understanding galaxy evolution, therefore we must determine their observational signatures to select them from large IFU galaxy samples such as MUSE and SAMI. We employ 24 high-resolution idealised hydrodynamical galaxy merger simulations based on the "Feedback In Realistic Environment" (FIRE-2) model to determine the observability of mergers to various configurations and stages using synthetic images and velocity maps. Our mergers cover a range of orbital configurations at fixed 1:2.5 stellar mass ratio for two gas rich spirals at low redshift. Morphological and kinematic asymmetries are computed for synthetic images and velocity maps spanning each interaction. We divide the interaction sequence into three: (1) the pair phase; (2) the merging phase; and (3) the post-coalescence phase. We correctly identify mergers between first pericentre passage and 500 Myr after coalescence using kinematic asymmetry with 66% completeness, depending upon merger phase and the field-of-view of the observation. We detect fewer mergers in the pair phase (40%) and many more in the merging and post-coalescence phases (97%). We find that merger detectability decreases with field-of-view, except in retrograde mergers, where centrally concentrated asymmetric kinematic features enhances their detectability. Using a cut-off derived from a combination of photometric and kinematic asymmetry, we increase these detections to 89% overall, 79% in pairs, and close to 100% in the merging and post-coalescent phases. By using this combined asymmetry cut-off we mitigate some of the effects caused by smaller fields-of-view subtended by massively multiplexed integral field spectroscopy programmes., Comment: Accepted to MNRAS

Context. Virtually all known exoplanets reside around stars with M < 2.3 M⊙ either due to the rapid evaporation of the protostellar disks or to selection effects impeding detections around more massive stellar hosts. Aims. To clarify if this dearth of planets is real or a selection effect, we launched the planet-hunting B-star Exoplanet Abundance STudy (BEAST) survey targeting B stars (M > 2.4 M⊙) in the young (5−20 Myr) Scorpius-Centaurus association by means of the high-contrast spectro-imager SPHERE at the Very Large Telescope. Methods. In this paper we present the analysis of high-contrast images of the massive (M ~ 9 M⊙) star μ2 Sco obtained within BEAST. We carefully examined the properties of this star, combining data from Gaia and from the literature, and used state-of-the-art algorithms for the reduction and analysis of our observations. Results. Based on kinematic information, we found that μ2 Sco is a member of a small group which we label Eastern Lower Scorpius within the Scorpius-Centaurus association. We were thus able to constrain its distance, refining in turn the precision on stellar parameters. Around this star we identify a robustly detected substellar companion (14.4 ± 0.8 MJ)at a projected separation of 290 ± 10 au, and a probable second similar object (18.5 ± 1.5 MJ) at 21 ± 1 au. The planet-to-star mass ratios of these objects are similar to that of Jupiter to the Sun, and the flux they receive from the star is similar to those of Jupiter and Mercury, respectively. Conclusions. The robust and the probable companions of μ2 Sco are naturally added to the giant 10.9 MJ planet recently discovered by BEAST around the binary b Cen system. While these objects are slightly more massive than the deuterium burning limit, their properties are similar to those of giant planets around less massive stars and they are better reproduced by assuming that they formed under a planet-like, rather than a star-like scenario. Irrespective of the (needed) confirmation of the inner companion, μ2 Sco is the first star that would end its life as a supernova that hosts such a system. The tentative high frequency of BEAST discoveries is unexpected, and it shows that systems with giant planets or small-mass brown dwarfs can form around B stars. When putting this finding in the context of core accretion and gravitational instability formation scenarios, we conclude that the current modeling of both mechanisms is not able to produce this kind of companion. Accounting for all the relativistic effects, we have developed the fully nonlinear gauge-invariant formalism for describing the cosmological observables and presented the second-order perturbative expressions associated with light propagation and observations without choosing a gauge condition. For the first time, we have performed a complete verification of the validity of our second-order expressions by comparing their gauge-transformation properties from two independent methods: one directly obtained from their expressions in terms of metric perturbations and the other expected from their nonlinear relations. The expressions for the cosmological observables such as galaxy clustering and the luminosity distance are invariant under diffeomorphism and gauge-invariant at the observed position. We compare our results to the previous work and discuss the differences in the perturbative expressions. In this paper, we systematically explore the impact of a galactic bar on the inspiral time-scale of a massive object (MO) within a Milky Way-like galaxy. We integrate the orbit of MOs in a multicomponent galaxy model via a semi-analytical approach that accounts for dynamical friction generalized to rotationally supported backgrounds. We compare the MO evolution in a galaxy featuring a Milky Way-like rotating bar to the evolution within an analogous axisymmetric galaxy without the bar. In agreement with previous studies, we find that the bar presence may significantly affect the inspiral, sometimes making it shorter by a factor of a few, and sometimes hindering it for a Hubble time. The erratic behaviour is mainly impacted by the relative phase at which the MO encounters the stronger bar-induced resonances. In particular, the effect of the bar is more prominent for initially in-plane, prograde MOs, especially those crossing the bar co-rotation radius or outer Lindblad resonance. In the barred galaxy, we find the sinking of the most massive MOs ($\gtrsim 10^{7.5}\, \mathrm{M}_{\odot {}}$) approaching the galaxy from large separations (≳8 kpc) to be most efficiently hampered. Neglecting the effect of global torques associated with the non-symmetric mass distribution is thus not advisable even within an idealized, smooth galaxy model; we further note that spiral patterns are unlikely to affect the inspiral due to their transient and fluctuating nature. We speculate that the sinking efficiency of massive black holes involved in minor galaxy mergers may be hampered in barred galaxies, making them less likely to host a gravitational wave signal accessible to low-frequency detectors.

Numerical simulations of magneto-convection have greatly expanded our understanding of stellar interiors and stellar magnetism. Recently, fully compressible hydrodynamical simulations of full-star models have demonstrated the feasibility of studying the excitation and propagation of pressure and internal gravity waves in stellar interiors, which would allow for a direct comparison with asteroseismological measurements. However, the impact of magnetic fields on such waves has not been taken into account yet in three-dimensional simulations. We conduct a proof of concept for the realization of three-dimensional, fully compressible, magneto-hydrodynamical numerical simulations of stellar interiors with the RAMSES code. We adapted the RAMSES code to deal with highly subsonic turbulence, typical of stellar convection, by implementing a well-balanced scheme in the numerical solver. We then ran and analyzed three-dimensional hydrodynamical and magneto-hydrodynamical simulations with different resolutions of a plane-parallel convective envelope on a Cartesian grid. Both hydrodynamical and magneto-hydrodynamical simulations develop a quasi-steady, turbulent convection layer from random density perturbations introduced over the initial profiles. The convective flows are characterized by small-amplitude fluctuations around the hydrodynamical equilibrium of the stellar interior, which is preserved over the whole simulation time. Using our compressible well-balanced scheme, we were able to model flows with Mach numbers as low as $\mathcal{M} \sim 10^{-3}$, but even lower Mach number flows are possible in principle. In the magneto-hydrodynamical runs, we observe an exponential growth of magnetic energy consistent with the action of a small-scale dynamo. (Abridged), Comment: accepted for publication on A&A

Meteoritic studies of solar system objects show evidence of nucleosynthetic heterogeneities that are inherited from small presolar grains (< 10 $��$m) formed in stellar environments external to our own. The initial distribution and subsequent evolution of these grains are currently unconstrained. Using 3D, gas-dust simulations, we find that isotopic variations on the order of those observed in the solar system can be generated and maintained by drag and viscosity. Small grains are dragged radially outwards without size/density sorting by viscous expansion and backreaction, enriching the outer disc with presolar grains. Meanwhile large aggregates composed primarily of silicates drift radially inwards due to drag, further enriching the relative portion of presolar grains in the outer disc and diluting the inner disc. The late accumulation of enriched aggregates outside Jupiter could explain some of the isotopic variations observed in solar system bodies, such as the enrichment of supernovae derived material in carbonaceous chondrites. We also see evidence for isotopic variations in the inner disc that may hold implications for enstatite and ordinary chondrites that formed closer to the Sun. Initial heterogeneities in the presolar grain distribution that are not continuously reinforced are dispersed by diffusion, radial surface flows, and/or planetary interactions over the entire lifetime of the disc. For younger, more massive discs we expect turbulent diffusion to be even more homogenising, suggesting that dust evolution played a more central role in forming the isotopic anomalies in the solar system than originally thought., 21 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

The origin of close-in giant planets is a key open question in planet formation theory. The two leading models are (i) formation at the outer disk followed by migration and (ii) in situ formation. In this work we determine the atmospheric composition of warm Jupiters for both formation scenarios. We perform N-body simulations of planetesimal accretion interior and exterior to the water ice-line for various planetary formation locations, planetary masses, and planetesimal sizes to estimate the accreted heavy-element mass and final planetary composition. We find that the two models differ significantly: migrating giant planets have 2-14 times higher metallicities than planets that form in situ. The ratio between refractories and volatiles is found to be above one for migrating planets but below 0.4 for planets that form in situ. We also identify very different trends between heavy-element enrichment and planetary mass for these two formation mechanisms. While the metallicity of migrating planets is found to increase with decreasing planetary mass, it is about constant for in situ formation. Compact Galactic Binary Systems with orbital periods of a few hours are expected to be detected in gravitational waves (GW) by Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA) or a similar mission. At present, these so-called verification binaries provide predictions for GW frequency and amplitude. A full polarization prediction would provide a new method to calibrate LISA and other GW observatories, but requires resolving the orientation of the binary on the sky, which is not currently possible. We suggest a method to determine the elusive binary orientation and hence predict the GW polarization, using km-scale optical intensity interferometry. The most promising candidate is CD–30° 11223, consisting of a hot helium subdwarf with mB = 12 and a much fainter white dwarf companion, in a nearly edge-on orbit with period 70.5 min. We estimate that the brighter star is tidally stretched by 6 per cent. Resolving the tidal stretching would provide the binary orientation. The resolution needed is far beyond any current instrument, but not beyond current technology. We consider scenarios where an array of telescopes with km-scale baselines and/or the Very Large Telescope (VLT) and Extremely Large Telescope (ELT) are equipped with recently developed kilopixel sub-ns single-photon counters and used for intensity interferometry. We estimate that a team-up of the VLT and ELT could measure the orientation to ±1° at 2σ confidence in 24 h of observation.

Galactic outflows driven by stellar feedback are crucial for explaining the inefficiency of star formation in galaxies. Although strong feedback can promote the formation of galactic discs by limiting star formation at early times and removing low angular momentum gas, it is not understood how the same feedback can result in diverse objects such as elliptical galaxies or razor thin spiral galaxies. We investigate this problem using cosmological zoom-in simulations of two galaxies forming within $10^{12}~\mathrm{M_\odot}$ halos with almost identical mass accretion histories and halo spin parameters. However, the two resulting galaxies end up with very different bulge-to-disc ratios at $z = 0$. At $z>1.5$, the two galaxies feature a surface density of star formation $\Sigma_{\rm SFR}\simeq 10~\mathrm{M_\odot}~{\rm yr}^{-1}~{\rm kpc}^{-2}$, leading to strong outflows. After the last starburst episode, both galaxies feature a dramatic gaseous disc growth from 1~kpc to 5~kpc during 1~Gyr, a decisive event we dub "the Grand Twirl". After this event, the evolutionary tracks diverge strongly, with one galaxy ending up as a bulge-dominated galaxy, whereas the other ends up as a disc-dominated galaxy. The origins of this dichotomy are the angular momentum of the accreted gas, and whether it adds constructively to the initial disc angular momentum. The build-up of this extended disc leads to a rapid lowering of $\Sigma_{\rm SFR}$ by over two orders of magnitude with $\Sigma_{\rm SFR} \lesssim 0.1~\mathrm{M_\odot}~{\rm yr}^{-1}~{\rm kpc}^{-2}$, in remarkable agreement with what is derived from Milky Way stellar populations. As a consequence, supernovae explosions are spread out and cannot launch galactic outflows anymore, allowing for the persistence of a thin, gently star forming, extended disc., Comment: 12 pages, 6 figures, published in MNRAS

Dark matter haloes play a fundamental role in cosmological structure formation. The most common approach to model their assembly mechanisms is through N-body simulations. In this work we present an innovative pathway to predict dark matter halo formation from the initial density field using a Deep Learning algorithm. We implement and train a Deep Convolutional Neural Network (DCNN) to solve the task of retrieving Lagrangian patches from which dark matter halos will condense. The volumetric multi-label classification task is turned into a regression problem by means of the euclidean distance transformation. The network is complemented by an adaptive version of the watershed algorithm to form the entire protohalo identification pipeline. We show that splitting the segmentation problem into two distinct sub-tasks allows for training smaller and faster networks, while the predictive power of the pipeline remains the same. The model is trained on synthetic data derived from a single full N-body simulation and achieves deviations of ~10% when reconstructing the dark matter halo mass function at z=0. This approach represents a promising framework for learning highly non-linear relations in the primordial density field. We present and validate a novel semi-analytical approach to study the effect of dynamical friction on the orbits of massive perturbers in rotating stellar discs. We find that dynamical friction efficiently circularises the orbit of co-rotating perturbers, while it constantly increases the eccentricity of counter-rotating ones until their angular momenta reverse, then once again promoting circularisation. Such "drag toward circular corotation" could shape the distribution of orientations of kinematically decoupled cores in disc galaxies, naturally leading to the observed larger fraction of co-rotating cores., 7 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

Despite many similarities, there are significant observed differences between Uranus and Neptune: while Uranus is tilted and has a regular set of satellites, suggesting their accretion from a disk, Neptune's moons are irregular and are captured objects. In addition, Neptune seems to have an internal heat source, while Uranus is in equilibrium with solar insulation. Finally, structure models based on gravity data suggest that Uranus is more centrally condensed than Neptune. We perform a large suite of high resolution SPH simulations to investigate whether these differences can be explained by giant impacts. For Uranus, we find that an oblique impact can tilt its spin axis and eject enough material to create a disk where the regular satellites are formed. Some of the disks are massive and extended enough, and consist of enough rocky material to explain the formation of Uranus' regular satellites. For Neptune, we investigate whether a head-on collision could mix the interior, and lead to an adiabatic temperature profile, which may explain its larger flux and higher moment of inertia value. We find that massive and dense projectiles can penetrate towards the centre and deposit mass and energy in the deep interior, leading to a less centrally concentrated interior for Neptune.
