- Abstract
Financial markets consist not only of exchanges for publicly traded assets but also comprise decisive private financial transactions with various participants. The fair value of some assets can be determined directly by the market through supply and demand or by simple calculations. On the other hand, the complexity of price determination is significantly exacerbated for the issuance of over-the-counter products without liquid markets, such as lookback options. The value of these options is path-dependent and considers the future movement of the underlying asset’s price. Thus, the option price depends on future uncertainty but must be determined at the time of emission. Although an explicit analytical solution for the evaluation is known, the calculation of this solution is highly complex and unwarranted in terms of practicality and efficiency. Thus, the option price must be approximated by numerical-algorithmic processes in a stochastic volatility model such as the Heston model. Despite notable advancements in recent research, the study of lookback options in the Heston model exhibits a limited body of literature and a scarcity of practical implementations. Hence, this thesis lays the foundation for the evaluation of lookback options by expounding the functionality and payoff of options, the Black-Scholes model with its deficiencies, and the Heston model as an extension. Furthermore, the finite difference approach is introduced as a numerical approximation method for one and two-dimensional problems. First, the numerical method is converted into matrix notation for further application and fundamental properties such as multiple, combinable boundary conditions are covered. Subsequently, an analytical partial differential equation for the pricing of lookback options is transformed from four to three dimensions with a new domain satisfying the requirement of the finite difference method, and a modified payoff function is defined. The implementation of the evaluation e

- Abstract
There is little research studying the effects of political violence on financial markets over decades, especially in an atmosphere where the violence manifested itself in heterogeneous and geographically widespread ways. This article examines the authoritarian edifice of Tsarist Russia in the nineteenth century to examine the way in which capital markets perceived political instability in a country which had paradoxically strong financial institutions but weak political ones. Using a novel database on political violence in Russia in the nineteenth century matched to monthly financial data from Russian equity markets, this article provides strong evidence that Russia's financial markets were negatively affected in the long run by political violence. Consistent with modern views of financial information, the effects of political violence were quickly incorporated into asset prices, but the specific magnitude of such violence was different depending on where the violence occurred and in what manner. Overall, it appeared that political violence was perceived very negatively by investors in Russian equity markets.

- Abstract
Through benchmarking, organisations can discover business insights and turn data into actionable outcomes to increase business performance. This study looks into the experience of corporate real estate (CRE) organisations with workplace benchmarking, aiming to better understand the current benchmarking practice and the benchmarking demands of organisations with large corporate real estate portfolios. In this qualitative explorative study, we conducted 10 semi-structured interviews with CRE and workplace managers, and one group interview with four CRE and workplace management consultants from Switzerland and Germany. Most participants work in large national organisations (n=2) or at multinationals (n=8) and represent various industries, including pharmaceuticals, consulting, software, telecommunications, transportation, banking and insurance. Data was analysed through thematic coding. We uncovered some underlying themes that describe the current practice and the demands for workplace benchmarking of CRE organisations. We identified three key aspects: 1) added value of benchmarking (“workplace benchmarking: part of the raison d'être of CREM”), 2) barriers for benchmarking implementation (“lack of systematic methods”, “missing standardisation, comparability, uniformity”, “different standards for data quality”, “measuring remains a challenge”, “passive use of data”), and 3) benchmarking demands (“need for holistic benchmarking”). This study showed that although it is recognized that benchmarking is valuable to give insights into the effectiveness of the strategy, organisations struggle with the implementation, due to missing standardisation and the lack of systematic methods. These findings can inform the development of CRE benchmarking solutions regarding industry demands, especially for the creation of workplace benchmarking tools. Additionally, this study investigated the benchmarking practice and demands of CRE organisations during the transition from “home-office m

- Abstract

- Abstract

- Abstract
This master's thesis examines the behavior of purchasing power parity (PPP) and exchange rates in the period following the financial crisis. The study focuses on three currency pairs: CHF/EUR, CHF/BRL, and CHF/ZMW. The analysis begins by comparing the nominal exchange rates with the corresponding PPP rates for each currency pair. The movements of the real exchange rates are then observed. To further investigate the behavior of the real exchange rates, a mean reversion test is conducted. The logarithmic returns of the real exchange rates are utilized in this test, and the Dickey-Fuller test is applied using the Python program. The results of the Augmented Dickey-Fuller test provide evidence for rejecting the null hypothesis, suggesting that the real exchange rates of each currency pair are mean reverting. The findings of this thesis contribute to the understanding of how real exchange rates behaved toward PPP in the post-financial crisis period.

- Abstract
The literature emphasizes the role of monetary policy for the term structure's ability to predict business cycles. Between 1972 and 2018, Ireland experienced three monetary regimes: first, the Irish Pound was fixed to Sterling (1972–1979); second the Pound floated in a band when Ireland was a member of EMS (1979–1998); and third, as a member of the euro area (1999–2018). Using dynamic probit models and monthly data, I show that the term spread only had predictive power during the second regime, the only one in which the Central Bank of Ireland had discretion to set interest rates based on the domestic conditions.

- Abstract
In this chapter, we discuss supervisory oversight and reporting systems during and after the financial crisis of 2007–2009. We also highlight past and current systemic weaknesses in the European Union and the United States. Accordingly, we present a conceptual framework for future regulatory reporting that enables near real-time banking supervision, opens new approaches to systemic risk monitoring, and incorporates cryptoassets seamlessly. By conducting a stakeholder analysis, we also accentuate this novel framework’s practical and operational challenges, where policymakers must play a moderating role in its implementation.

- Abstract

- Abstract

- Abstract

This paper studies the causes of movements in inflation and output in Switzerland over 160 years between 1855 and 2015. Aggregate supply and demand shocks are identified in a structural VAR, and their evolution and effect on prices and output are discussed. Shocks to the Swiss economy have generally, although not uniformly, declined in magnitude over the sample period. The World Wars, the deflation of the 1920s and the Great Depression represented much larger shocks than either of 1970s break-up of Bretton Woods and move to floating exchange rates or the Global Financial Crisis.

- Abstract
Credit risk forms an integral part of any financial institution, and the onset of COVID-19 pandemic warrants assessment of credit risk on priority. Applicability of machine learning methods has been increasingly extended to assess credit risk. Assessing the borrower’s capability of repaying the loan or categorizing the borrower as high or low risk, is one of the many instances where machine learning is applied. However, when the pandemic disrupted and halted the economies, most machine learning models tended to fail in predicting the defaulting borrowers correctly. The primary aim of this master’s thesis is to demonstrate the impact of the pandemic on a simple decision tree model which is one of the baseline models used by many institutions and researchers to assess borrower risk due to its interpretability. Moreover, in the light of highly imbalanced nature of the data with majority towards non-defaulters, the impact of pandemic can be assessed on various sampling techniques which could be used to produce better results. As consumer behavior is affected by their surrounding environment and the state of the economy, macroeconomic indicators could provide signals or better predictions while predicting borrower defaults. The aim of the thesis extends to incorporating a few relevant macroeconomic indicators as independent variables in the models to assess if the same increase the predictive performance of the model. To enable this, mortgage loan performance data from Fannie Mae is utilized from the years 2015 until 2020 coupled with macroeconomic variables for predicting mortgage loan default. Decision tree models are trained and fine-tuned for the loan performance data from 2015 to 2017 using sampling techniques such as undersampling, and oversampling, and evaluated on the following years including the pandemic year 2020. The models are again tested in combination with the macroeconomic variables to assess if the predictive performance of the models is affected. The r

- Abstract
In recent decades, there has been a notable expansion of the venture capital (VC) industry on a global scale, despite facing diverse regional dynamics. These local variations have led to significant differences in the behavior of VC firms. Since venture capitalists can enhance the competitiveness of an economy and create new jobs, it is crucial to strengthen the VC industry to establish a favorable climate for entrepreneurs and foster innovation. Thus, the aim of this paper was to examine the differences in the way VC firms operate in Switzerland compared to the United States (US), the market from which the industry emerged, and to explore what the Swiss ecosystem may be able to benefit from. The emphasis was placed on deal flow generation, selection, postinvestment involvement, and exit. To investigate the research question, a mixed methodology combining quantitative and qualitative approaches was chosen. First, within the quantitative part, the backgrounds of VC employees were classified into categories. In addition, investment patterns of VC firms were observed with respect to the stage of investment in the respective start-up. Second, as part of the qualitative research, interviews were conducted with Swiss VC firms to obtain data on the situation in Switzerland. The results showed that, on average, Swiss VC firms had significantly more employees with a background in banking or finance and fewer employees with science degrees or entrepreneurial experiences than US VC firms. This led to differences in how they interact with universities and start-ups. The US VC firms seemed to pursue an even more co-entrepreneurial approach. Furthermore, while US VC firms, on average, were more stage-generalists than Swiss VC firms, there were indications that the Swiss VC industry moves from early-stage investments backwards to later stages. In addition to the average deal size in Switzerland being about half that in the US, US VC firms had stronger contacts with potential buyer

- Abstract
- Abstract
This paper develops a novel approach for classifying companies according to three different sustainability focus possibilities -- avoidance of financial and sustainability risks, contributions towards the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and commitment towards transformation. We examine the relationship between these profiles and corporate financing. First, we link the three sustainability profiles to the probability that a company issues a sustainability-specific debt financing instrument and show that, against our predictions, better sustainability performers in all dimensions are more likely to hold such an instrument. Second, we provide evidence for a general increase in book leverage for companies avoiding sustainability risks, as well as companies in transition, but not companies providing specific solutions toward the achievement of the SDGs. Furthermore, this increase in leverage is not driven by sustainability-related debt instruments.

- Abstract
Accruals rapidly revert from one year to another posing a challenge for predicting them one year in advance. Employing the supervised machine-learning models LASSO, random forests, and SVMs on a comprehensive dataset comprising 453 financial variables, we demonstrate the superior predictive accuracy of these models compared to traditional OLS regressions. More importantly, we demonstrate that including numerous explanatory variables in in-sample regressions leads to severe overfitting, which potentially inflates the results' significance. Consequently, we advocate for the adoption of superior out-of-sample methods. Finally, we reveal that accruals and their components have a higher predictive power for next year's accruals than typical Jones models variables. Our research emphasizes the need for further investigation into individual accrual components to gain a deeper understanding of their characteristics, impact, and predictive power on the accumulated accruals.

Leu is a new complementary currency that has been launched in 2022 in Zurich. Leu has a set of unique attributes that sets it apart from other complementary currencies. It is distributed in physical meetings as a universal basic income and has a built-in demurragemechanism. No research has been conducted on Leu at the time of writing this thesis. The actors of Leu are analyzed using qualitative methods. In a first step, the community that attends the physical meetings is explored using participant observation. In a second step, deeper insights are created using interviews which are analyzed with a qualitative content analysis. The results of this thesis suggest, that Leu has the potential to be used as a part of the solution to longstanding societal issues such as inequality. While the creators of Leu have succeeded in launching a local currency that is highly accessible and has limited inflation, the launch has also brought forward issues that hinder the formation of a circular economy that is based on Leu.

Finally, nature risks like biodiversity and carbon footprints have been recognised as important business risks. Beyond immediate physical risks, transition risks include scenarios with disruptive consequences. Sustainable finance regulation calls for a transparent reporting of these risks. However, the full integration into the corporate risk framework, company valuations, and portfolio management needs a consistent quantitative treatment with discriminating precision down to company level. The crucial point is the objective of enabling allocation decisions between two competing companies from the same industry. This paper proposes a bottom-up scenario-based aggregation of company impacts measured by geospatial analysis rather than a top-down breakdown from global exposures. We overlay geospatial ESG variables mainly from global remote sensing products with the spatial footprints of asset-level data. In contrast to other approaches, the footprints of local operations are translated into a financial loss quantity for each single operational site before they are aggregated across the company. As the scenarios can be defined consistent across companies, statistically justified portfolio risk measures can be evaluated that enable portfolio risk management by a selection of individual investments and credit decisions rather than an exclusion of whole industry sectors. We illustrate our approach for the case of biodiversity risks and choose the mining sector as there is significant scientific literature on its environmental impacts and on remote sensing to detect these impacts.

The global wealth management industry may have come to a critical juncture. Heightened geopolitical tensions, the war in Ukraine, stubborn inflation and a looming global recession could put increasing pressure on wealth management firms, as lower assets under management (AUM) and lower levels of growth strain profitability. At the same time, competitive pressures are intensifying, and client preferences continue to shift rapidly toward new products and services (e.g., access to private markets), relevant personalized advice, and a seamless omnichannel experience.

- Abstract
Over the last decade, technological development has allowed us to retrieve large economic data sets from various sources such as social media, internet search engines, and electronic transaction sources. Economists have constructed methods to use this new alternative data to monitor macroeconomic conditions in almost real time. Including these alternative data was found to improve the nowcast performance in many macroeconomic cases. In addition, a considerable number of successful attempts have been made to predict financial markets with data collected from online search engines. However, there is a lack of literature covering the relevance of internet search statistics for the assessment of credit risk. The purpose of this thesis is to determine if Google-based indicators exhibit predictive power on Credit Default Swaps spreads of large Swiss companies. Credit Default Swaps prices reflect the perceived credit or default risk of the underlying entity. A quantitative analysis is conducted by running multiple OLS regression models to answer the research question. Credit Default Swap spread changes of large Swiss companies are regarded as the dependent variable. The independent variables of the regression analyses are three Google-based indicators from the website trendEcon and three control variables. The three independent variables from trendEcon are the index of Perceived Economic Situation, the index of Mobility, and the Clothing and Shoes indicator. The three control variables are the SMI returns, the two-year Swiss Government Bond Yields, and the stock market volatility index VSTOXX. In a first step, multiple regression models are run on a panel data set of the overall sample. The period of the analysis lasts from August 2, 2017, to August 29, 2022, with a total of 19’110 observations. In a second step, individual OLS regressions are run on the series of each company in the sample. The results of the panel data regression show that the Google-based indicators fro

36. The impact of inflation on corporate financing for non-financial firms in Europe

- Abstract
For almost two decades, non-financial companies have substantially increased their issuance of corporate bonds. Although Europe’s refinancing market has always been heavily bank-related compared to the USA, the aggregate market financing in the Euro area has been growing faster than bank lending since 2000. Moreover, this period was characterized by low inflation and corresponding low or negative interest rates. These circumstances considerably impacted corporates' financing behaviour. After this period, inflation increased sharply in Europe, reinstating known economic mechanisms and market dynamics. The present paper examines this relationship of inflation to bank lending and net bond issuance for non-financial corporates in Germany, France, Italy, Spain, and The Netherlands, representing approximately 68 % of the European Union’s Gross Domestic Product. For this purpose, an OLS analysis for various main and country-specific models is performed to provide further insights. Besides inflation, the present paper investigates the impact of additional variables to put the findings into a broader context. Namely, refinancing cost, market volatility, and stock market returns are considered. Next, this set of empirical conclusions is analysed and assessed from an economical perspective. These assessments also include a view of traditional capital theory from an empirical standpoint and additional observations. In conclusion, the paper suggests that rising inflation increases European bank lending. Conversely, net bond issuance appears to be decreasing when inflation rises. The implied impact of inflation on net bond issuance seems more relevant than the impact on bank lending. Furthermore, the paper implies that refinancing cost might be a more suitable variable to estimate future developments. Moreover, the report suspects a link between the statistical significance of inflation regarding net bond issuance with the respective maturity of the examined bond market in a coun

37. Political bias in inflation expectations : a quantitative analysis of the Michigan Survey of Consumers

- Abstract
This thesis investigates the partisan bias in inflation expectations among survey respondents of the University of Michigan Survey of Consumers over the period January 2006 – March 2023. The study reveals that individuals who support the party holding the presidency tend to expect lower inflation rates, while supporters of the opposing party generally anticipate higher inflation rates compared to those with no specific party affiliation. The analysis highlights that this partisan bias is more pronounced among strong affiliates of the Republican or Democratic party. Furthermore, the bias is generally stronger during a supportive party's presidency compared to the bias toward higher inflation expectations during an opposing party's presidency. These findings suggest that political affiliation has a substantial influence on inflation expectations, with partisan bias playing a significant role. Additionally, the analysis provides evidence that the partisan bias in inflation expectations is influenced not only by the presidency but also by the majority distribution in the legislative chambers. When one party has full control of both chambers and the presidency, regression coefficients from both strong and weak political affiliates point to a higher bias compared to periods where the party opposing the president hold the majority in at least one legislative chamber. To disentangle the difference in inflation expectations, a Blinder-Oaxaca decomposition method is deployed. The decomposition results demonstrate that, during periods when the partisan theory holds, a statistically significant portion of the difference in inflation expectations between strong Republicans and strong Democrats, as well as overall Republicans and Democrats, cannot be explained by differences in individuals' characteristics. This suggests that the bias is inherently tied to political ideology rather than solely driven by personal attributes. Additionally, the findings indicate a considerable incre

- Abstract
Switzerland has enjoyed a well-regarded reputation as a leading financial center for many decades due to its high-quality services, expertise, and stability. Wealth management services have been a major source of income for banks. However, the Swiss wealth management industry competitiveness is falling behind in terms of financial sector digital capabilities. As the world advances technologically, new client expectations emerge; consequently, the Swiss financial institutions must adapt to these new client demands, which requires the institutions to embrace technological breakthroughs. The technological advancements of this century include cryptography, the underlying technology of the revolutionary crypto asset’s ecosystem. Due to the institution-sceptical libertarian movement that started crypto assets, they are a controversial topic. This is shown by how Swiss financial institutions are differently positioned concerning the topic: some are at the intersection of the crypto ecosystem and traditional finance, while others are studying the topic or have stated their opposition to crypto assets. Consequently, the purpose of this study is to comprehend the extent of crypto asset offerings by Swiss financial institutions, as well as the rationale behind their position, their impressions of clients' demand, and their view regarding the institutionalization of crypto assets. In addition, as the crypto asset sector expands and a rapidly rising number of crypto asset categories and classes are established, this study aims to examine the crypto asset class(es) that have the potential to meet the demands of Swiss wealth managers and their clients. The methodology used to address these topics is based on interviews with experts in the field. The qualitative analysis adopts the grounded theory approach. The grounded theory approach seeks to discover or construct a theory using qualitative data that have been methodically collected and analysed using comparison techniques. The i

- Abstract
Flucht in Qualitätsanlagen).

- Abstract

- Abstract
The Paris Agreement and the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) has led to raised awareness and increased sensitivity towards greenhouse gas emissions reductions and development in areas involving environmental, social and governance (ESG) aspects. Switzerland has set a commitment to reduce carbon emissions by 50 per cent of the 1990 levels by 2030 with an indicative target to reduce net carbon emissions to zero by 2050. A large percentage of Switzerland’s CO2 emissions is a result of high emissions stemming from the real estate sector. Approximately one quarter of the 32 metric tons of total greenhouse gas emissions produced on an annual basis in Switzerland is contributed by buildings. The real estate sector in Switzerland will need to play a major role in the coming years in reducing emissions through replacement of fossil fuel heating systems and retrofitting measures to improve the energetic efficiency of buildings. However, various issues are being faced in the real estate sector in Switzerland which challenge the feasibility of achieving the targets of these frameworks. The research for this thesis will contribute to a project collaboration between ZHAW and the Swiss company ‘Conser’ in the development of an ESG-rating for real estate in Switzerland. The aim of this paper is to outline the most critical issues being faced in sustainable real estate in Switzerland, to provide initial research into ESG indicators that could be incorporated into an ESG real estate rating, and to determine relevant information that could be abstracted from annual reports for use in the development of an ESG rating for real estate funds. Qualitative research of the real estate market consisting of desk research and interviews with industry experts was conducted to identify the most urgent issues facing the real estate sector in Switzerland in their efforts towards sustainability. Apart from the high carbon emissions output in the real estate sector, major issues i

- Abstract
This study examines if the Fintech companies are more likely to receive equity funding compared to the other companies and other startups. The purpose of the research is to analyze if selected determinants (age, headquarters location, employee size, estimated revenue and operating industry) affect equity funding received. A sample of 59,429 startup companies across 130 countries on a cross sectional data is analyzed by using OLS regression in Python. The null hypotheses that these factors do not have an impact on equity funding to the alternative was tested. The results show that, among the selected determinants; age, employee size and estimated revenue have a positive relationship on equity funding and being a Fintech company and having a headquarters location in US have a negative relationship on equity funding. The impact of the headquarter location on equity funding is weaker in an emerged market compared to emerging markets.

- Abstract
This paper aims to define the early post-COVID-19 era and answer the following research question; What are the influences of the Ukraine crisis on inflation in Europe from the perspective of the post-COVID-19 global financial world? The research is taken in two steps. The first step involved a detailed analysis of reports from international financial institutions and a detailed literature review. In the second step, interviews were taken with sector professionals. For analyzing the interview outcomes, qualitative content analysis was chosen as a method., The COVID-19 pandemic and stringent controls have impeded businesses' and consumers' production ability. In response to economic disturbances, several governments deployed enormous fiscal stimulus. This method increased consumption, which, when paired with a somewhat inelastic supply, resulted in supply chain bottlenecks and pricing pressures. Nonetheless, extensive public assistance was beneficial during this extraordinary crisis. Despite the potential for pricing pressures due to the investment, the enormous spending aided a solid economic rebound. As a result, GDP and employment rebounded historically, perhaps avoiding catastrophic effects. On top of this distorted economy, the war between Ukraine and Russia has put Europe under a severe energy crisis and an inflationary atmosphere. The European sanctions on Russia and the region's reliance on Russian imports for energy and industrial items have put pressure on the regional economy. These sanctions and the conflict caused a raw material scarcity and an energy crisis in Europe, resulting in an inflationary climate. Thus, while the epidemic and the Russia-Ukraine war are not the same types of disaster for Europe, they are both foreign shocks. As a result, they drive EU choices and develop various policies. This study aims to focus on the post-COVID-19 global financial landscape. A detailed literature review and reports from global institutions such as the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the World Bank, the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OCED), and the European Central Bank (ECB) were analyzed to determine the results. In the second phase, interviews were conducted with senior financial sector experts, senior economists, investment advisors, journalists, and policy advisors to provide insights. Qualitative content analysis was used to analyze the interviews. This was done by transcribing the interview data, rereading it and highlighting the essential parts in yellow, creating codes where n

- Abstract

- Abstract
After years and years of easy money, interest rates in the US are moving up again the yield curve is inverting. While Quantitative Easing is signalled to end in Europe, too, global debt levels are very high, and inflation is rapidly picking up around the globe. How will the US economy respond to rising rates and the end of easy money? The goal of the thesis is to understand the mechanism behind interest rate levels, the form of the yield curve, inflation, and the economy as well as the stock market. The policy of the FED needs to be understood and analysed given the background of its historical actions. Furthermore, a machine learning framework is built for trying to evaluate recession indicators. This thesis revealed that the monetary policy in the Fed aims to achieve its statutory mandate objectives: maximum employment, stable prices, and moderate long-term interest rates. As the Fed was recently criticized for not achieving its goals of stability and low inflation. This resulted several advocated changes, including alterations to the policy and unconventional monetary policy, that became during the last decade very important. According to the literature, expansionary (contractionary) monetary policy impacts the stock market positively (negatively). Based on the literature examined in this thesis, it can be concluded that as inflation increased, the Fed hat to increase interest rates as a reaction of high inflation by affecting the money supply and its real impact on the FFR. Longer-term interest rates and asset classes show a responsiveness to changes in the existing and targeted FFR. In this regard, consumer expectations regarding the future development of the key interest rate impact both medium- and longer-term interest rates. If borrowers and lenders currently assume that the FOMC will lower the policy rate substantially in the coming years, medium- and long-term interest rates will reflect these expectations. As a result, interest rates will be lower than th
