Sustainability in additive manufacturing (AM) (3D printing) could play a pivotal role for manufacturers and producers in the next‐generation manufacturing framework. The market for 3D printing is expanding rapidly, and it is expected to do so in the foreseeable years to come. As ecologically, responsible manufacturing gains more attention, renewable substitutes for regular commercial 3D printable inks must be developed for lower environmental carbon footprints (less CO2 emissions, recycling, bio‐compatibility, and zero waste). Herein, we review the recent literature on using vegetable oil (VO) as bio‐based inks for sustainable formulations for digital light processing or stereolithography additive printing. The feedstock selections (VO, terpenes, and waste cooking oil), and the chemistry of the VO‐based synthons toward sustainability in the field of photopolymerization‐based 3D printing are discussed. These renewable materials can mitigate the detrimental environmental effects of AM while remaining competitive with the existing fossil‐based resins produced by industrial manufacturers. The current challenges and limitations of AM in terms of surface finish, material properties, photo‐curing time, and end‐of‐use recycling options from biomass‐derived photocurable monomers are also identified. Overall, this development promotes the bio‐based economy and allows for the on‐demand production of a variety of sustainable inks for AM and sustainable end‐of‐use products. This scientific article investigates the mechanical properties of a novel three-dimensional-printing resin specifically designed for orthodontic aligners and compares it to other commonly used resins. The resin was made by blending two commercially available and certified resins to produce aligners with improved mechanical properties compared to each separate resin. The study examined the effect of the addition of NextDent Ortho Rigid resin on the mechanical properties of the specimens, more specifically analyzing the relationship between the amount of the added rigid resin and the mechanical properties of the specimens. The mechanical properties of the specimens and the nickel-titanium wires were analyzed using a three-point bending test setup. The results showed no statistically significant differences within the different groups of specimens. The study provides valuable insights into the potential of the resin to meet the mechanical demands of orthodontic treatments. It will contribute to the advancement of personalized orthodontic care through three-dimensional-printing technology. Blending commercially available and certified resins enables orthodontic practitioners to select the most suitable resin for each case, providing better outcomes for patients and increasing the efficiency of the treatment process. This study aimed to assess the effects of airborne-particle abrasion (APA) on the flexural strength of two types of 3D-printing resins for permanent restoration. Two types of 3D printing resins (urethane dimethacrylate oligomer; UDMA, ethoxylated bisphenol-A dimethacrylate; BEMA) constituting different components were printed. The specimen surfaces were subjected to APA using 50 and 110 µm alumina particles under different pressures. The three-point flexural strength was measured for each surface treatment group, and a Weibull analysis was performed. Surface characteristics were analyzed via surface roughness measurements and scanning electron microscopy. Dynamic mechanical analysis and nano-indentation measurements were limited to the control group. The three-point flexural strength according to the surface treatment was significantly lower in the UDMA group for large particle sizes and at high pressures; the BEMA group demonstrated low flexural strength for large particle sizes regardless of the pressure. After thermocycling, the flexural strengths of UDMA and BEMA significantly decreased in the group subjected to surface treatment. The Weibull modulus and characteristic strength of UDMA were higher than those of BEMA under different APA and thermocycling conditions. As the abrasion pressure and particle size increased, a porous surface formed, and the surface roughness increased. Compared with BEMA, UDMA featured a lower strain, greater strain recovery, and a negligible increase in modulus according to strain. Thus, surface roughness increased with the sandblasting particle size and pressure of the 3D-printing resin.
