Mit dem Band 14 „Das Modell Friedland: Vom Zusammenleben deutscher, jüdischer und wendischer Bewohner in einer Niederlausitzer Kleinstadt“ haben die Herausgeber den Autoren Alfred Roggan und Tobias Preßler die Erweiterung ihrer Forschungen ermöglicht: Widmete sich deren Band 12 „Sorbische/Wendische Spuren in der nördlichen Niederlausitz“ (2019) noch Befunden einer binationalen, weil deutsch-wendischen Geschichte, so wird mit dem Band 14 erstmalig für Ostdeutschland die Dokumentation einer ‚trinationalen‘, also deutsch-jüdisch-wendischen Lebenswelt vorgenommen. Die Untersuchungen verdeutlichen, wie sich drei, im 18. Jahrhundert annähernd gleich große Einwohner-Gruppen, mit ihren Gotteshäusern, ihren Sprachen und einem differenzierten Einwohnerstatus etablierten bzw. arrangiert haben. Es zeigten sich Alleinstellungsmerkmale in Lebens- sowie Kultorganisation, Wirtschaftstätigkeiten und der Kommunikation zwischen den Beheimateten. Mit der Amts-Verwaltung des Johanniter-Ritterordens und dem Stadtrat befanden sie sich in berechenbaren (deutschdominierten) Strukturen. Aus diesem Gefüge und der territorialen Grenzlage zum Kurfürstentum Brandenburg begründeten sich Bedingungen, ohne die es wohl zu keinem „Modell Friedland“ gekommen wäre. Die Autoren sind dankbar, dass sich mit Friedland die gnädige Chance bot, einen Bereich zu untersuchen, in dem Prozesse der wendisch-deutschen Assimilierung in einer eigenen Stetigkeit abliefen, jedoch das Ende jüdischen Lebens auf die Abwanderungen infolge der preußischen Emanzipations-Gesetze des 19. Was nimmt man mit, wenn man nichts mitnehmen kann? Welcher Gegenstand ist sowohl im Alltag als auch in Notsituationen unverzichtbar? Ein Ausstellungsprojekt der Kulturreferentin Magdalena Oxfort zeigt, welche Rolle ausgerechnet Löffel in biografischen Ausnahmesituationen und ihrer Erinnerung spielen können.

The post-WW II Jewish migration from the Soviet Union (and also after its dissolution) is one of the largest in modern history. Altogether 2.75 million Soviet Jews left the USSR for Israel, the United States, Germany and elsewhere. The position of the Soviet state with respect to emigration was remarkably ambivalent: in some cases, it was allowed and even encouraged, in others, others; it was controlled and strongly limited. The Jewish emigration movement that arose in the late 1960s and continued throughout the 1970s-1980s became an example of resistance and activism within the authoritarian system, which increasingly alerted international attention. In one way or another, it affected the lives of hundreds of thousands of people and changed the appearance of many cities and towns within the Soviet Union and outside it.

Russian Germans are a global minority. Their history is often characterized by migration within and outside the Russian Empire spanning several generations. In the last third of the 19th century, popular migration destinations included North and South America as well as new settlement areas in Siberia and Kazakhstan. It was here that all Russian Germans were then exiled during and after the Second World War. Since the latest period of resettlement in the 1980s and 1990s, most Russian Germans have settled in Germany.

In 2009, Hannah Wadle settled in Sztynort to do research for her doctoral thesis – and stayed for a whole year. Gradually, her cautious explorations turned into familiarity and what began as a purely academic interest became a dedicated personal commitment to the town and its people. She learned to see the Lehndorff manor house from many perspectives. In 2017, she founded a cultural festival, and since then the palace has come to life every August.

"There was no culture of remembrance in my family," says Verus von Plotho. He grew up in a cosmopolitan world. He was born in Sao Paulo, Brazil, in 1969 and grew up in Munich. His mother is Gabriele Freifrau von Plotho, the third daughter of Heinrich and Gottliebe von Lehndorff. There was hardly any talk at home about his grandfather and his resistance to Hitler, nor about his earlier life at Steinort Castle. Grandson Verus grew up – unencumbered – in the shadow of a dramatic past.

She is known as a Green Party politician and for her longstanding role as Vice President of the German Bundestag. After retiring in 2005, she became a freelance author. Her first book project “Doppelleben” (Double Life) tells the story of Heinrich von Lehndorff, one of the conspirators of the events of 20 July 1944 , and his wife Gottliebe. It is a moving biography of two young aristocrats that tells of their daring and their love.

Two passionate sailors, raised in Giżycko, not far from Sztynort. Marek Makowski (b.1984) and Piotr Wagner (b.1986) left at a young age, took advantage of the opportunities on offer in a united Europe and later returned to the world they grew up in. Marek, an entrepreneur and owner of a sailing school, and Piotr, a self-employed interpreter, tour guide and cultural professional, share a tangible vision for Sztynort.

Steinort is a European place of remembrance par excellence, because it is a place where the most diverse stories and memories intersect, intertwine, and overlap. The interview project by Ulla Lachauer and Agata Kern explores these subjective strands of memory and reveals a number of different cultures of remembrance.

„In meiner Familie gab es keine Erinnerungskultur“, sagt Verus von Plotho. Ein Weltbürger, 1969 in Sao Paulo, Brasilien, geboren, aufgewachsen in München. Seine Mutter ist Gabriele Freifrau von Plotho, die dritte Tochter von Heinrich und Gottliebe von Lehndorff. Über den Großvater und seinen Widerstand gegen Hitler wurde Zuhause kaum gesprochen, auch nicht über das frühere Leben auf Schloss Steinort. Enkel Verus wuchs – unbelastet – im Schatten der dramatischen Vergangenheit auf.

Eines Tages hörte Wolfram Jäger im Radio vom katastrophalen Zustand des Lehndorffschen Schlosses. Der bekannte Spezialist für die Sanierung historischer Bauwerke hatte damals in Barcelona ein großes Projekt für die UNESCO abgeschlossen und fuhr sofort nach Masuren. Im Frühling 2011 traf er eine folgenschwere Entscheidung – ein Glück für das Schloss, für ihn eine Herkulesarbeit.

For more than 150 years, the Rococo dresser stood on the upper floor of the Steinort castle, in the so-called "Simson room". It bears witness to the lifestyle of an East Prussian noble family. Behind it lies an adventurous journey that began after the failed assassination attempt on Hitler on July 20, 1944, when Heinrich Graf von Lehndorff, the last lord of the castle, was arrested and executed.

Schon im 19. Jahrhundert waren die Puschkes Lehrer in Steinort und im benachbarten Kirchort Rosengarten. Sie spielten im Dorfleben eine wichtige Rolle und hatten enge Verbindungen zur Grafenfamilie Lehndorff. Die letzte der Lehrerdynastie war Eva Puschke, von 1940 bis 1944 „Laienlehrerin“ in Rosengarten. Nach der Vertreibung lebte sie in Hamburg. Sie hat einen Koffer voller Familiendokumente hinterlassen.

Stefan Tymiec was born in Sztynort in July 1950. “I had a happy childhood”, he says. He hardly felt anything of the tragedies that his parents had lived through. His mother was German and remained in her homeland in 1945. His father was Ukrainian, one of many people who had been forcibly resettled from southeastern Poland. Stefan's childhood happiness lasted eight years, then the family set off for the West.

The East Prussian noble Lehndorff family can be traced back to the 13th century. The history and culture of remembrance around the family are exemplary for many other noble families in Eastern Europe. Our author Hans-Jürgen Bömelburg explains the role of commemorating the nobility and calls for a new approach to regional history.

What do you take with you when you are forced to flee your home empty-handed? Which object will be indispensable in everyday life and vital for emergencies? An exhibition project by the consultant for cultural affairs Magdalena Oxfort shows the role that spoons, of all things, can play in people's lives when they face exceptional circumstances and also in their memory of these events.

Steinort Palace in northern Masuria was the seat of the noble Lehndorff family until 1945. The last Count, Heinrich von Lehndorff, was one of the conspirators of July 20, 1944. These stories tell of the fate of the East Prussian noble family and follow the lives of people who lived in the village, which is called Sztynort today. Others tell of German and Polish enthusiasts who are working to revive the run-down manor house. 17 biographical texts explore themes of expulsion and new beginnings, tragedy and awakening in this multi-ethnic region.

Zwei passionierte Segler, aufgewachsen in Giżycko, nicht weit von Sztynort. Marek Makowski (Jg.1984) und Piotr Wagner (Jg.1986) gingen in jungen Jahren fort, nutzten die Chancen des vereinten Europas und kehrten später in ihre heimatliche Galaxie zurück. Marek, Unternehmer, Besitzer einer Segelschule, Piotr, selbstständiger Dolmetscher, Reiseleiter und Kulturschaffender, haben für Sztynort eine handfeste Vision.

Eine schlichte Kommode, die aus dem Steinorter Gutshaus stammt, vermutlich aus einer Gesindekammer. 1945 war sie noch ziemlich neu, Kiefernholz, ohne weißen Anstrich. Vor zehn Jahren schenkte ein alter Herr sie dem Museum für Volkskunde in Węgorzewo, früher Angerburg, zusammen mit anderen Dingen, die er nach Kriegsende aus dem Schloss mitgenommen hatte.

This charming wooden building was once the hunting lodge of the Lehndorff counts. Here they would gather after the great hunts to feast and celebrate together. Later, the building was leased to an innkeeper. After 1945 it was used as a storehouse, and for a while it served as a village store. It gradually fell into disrepair until one day it caught the eye of the young businessman Alexander Potocki.

"What luck that we had this kindergarten!" All four say. That was in the early 1970s. Agata and Jolanta now live in Germany, Dorota and Iwona have stayed in Masuria. Lehndorff Castle, the "Pałac", was a place they all felt happy. In those stately rooms they had a feeling of security and comfort, they played among the old oaks, went swimming in the lake. It was a microcosm away from the adult world with its worries and traumas.

2009 ließ sich Hannah Wadle in Sztynort nieder, um für ihre Doktorarbeit zu recherchieren – und blieb ein ganzes Jahr. Aus behutsamen Erkundungen wurde Vertrautheit, aus wissenschaftlichem Interesse Engagement für die Bewohner. Sie lernte, das Lehndorffsche Herrenhaus aus vielen Perspektiven zu sehen. 2017 hat sie ein Kulturfestival gegründet, seitdem erwacht das Schloss in jedem August zum Leben.

Das ostpreußische Adelsgeschlecht Lehndorff lässt sich bis ins 13. Jahrhundert zurückverfolgen. Seine Geschichte und Erinnerungskultur sind beispielhaft für viele andere Adelsgeschlechter im östlichen Europa. Unser Autor Hans-Jürgen Bömelburg erläutert die Rolle des adeligen Erinnerns und plädiert für eine neue Annäherung an Regionalgeschichte.

One day, Wolfram Jäger heard on the radio about the catastrophic condition of Lehndorff Palace. The well-known specialist in the restoration of historic buildings had recently completed a major project for UNESCO in Barcelona and immediately made his way to Masuria. In the spring of 2011, he made a momentous decision – a stroke of luck for the castle, a Herculean task for him.

„Ich habe meine Heimat verloren“, sagte Vera von Lehndorff einmal, „aber verlorene Kindheit trifft es besser.“ Als ihr Vater am 4. September 1944 hingerichtet wurde, war sie fünf Jahre. Ihre Schwester Eleonore, „Nona“, sechseinhalb, Gabriele zwei. Catharina erst 19 Tage alt, sie wurde im Gefängniskrankenhaus Torgau geboren. Die Nazis hatten die Mädchen und ihre Mutter Gottliebe in „Sippenhaft“ genommen. Eine traumatische Zeit, und sie war nach 1945 nicht vorbei.

„Ein Glück, dass wir diesen Kindergarten hatten!“ Sagen alle vier. Anfang der 1970er Jahre war das. Agata und Jolanta leben heute in Deutschland, Dorota und Iwona sind in Masuren geblieben. Ort des Glücks war das Lehndorffsche Schloss, der „Pałac“. In den herrschaftlichen Räumen erlebten sie Geborgenheit, sie spielten zwischen den alten Eichen, badeten im See. Ein Mikrokosmos abseits der Erwachsenenwelt, ihrer Sorgen und Traumata.
