Canonically, a protoplanetary disk is thought to undergo (gravito-)viscous evolution, wherein the angular momentum of the accreting material is transported outwards. However, several lines of reasoning suggest that the turbulent viscosity in a typical protoplanetary disk is insufficient to drive the observed accretion rates. An emerging paradigm suggests that radially extended magnetic disk winds may play a crucial role in the disk evolution. We propose a global model of magnetic wind-driven accretion for evolution of protoplanetary disks, based on the insights gained from local shearing box simulations. Here we develop this model and constrain its parameters with the help of theoretical expectations and comparison with observations. The magnetic wind is characterized with the associated loss of angular momentum and mass, which depend on the local disk conditions and stellar properties. We incorporate the disk winds self-consistently in the code FEOSAD and study formation and long-term evolution of protoplanetary disks. We include disk self-gravity and an adaptive turbulent alpha, while the co-evolution of dust is also considered. Synthetic observations are obtained via radiation thermo-chemical code ProDiMo. The models with inclusion of disk winds satisfy general expectations from both theory and observations. The disk wind parameters can be guided by observational constraints and the synthetic observations resulting from such a model compare favorably with the selected ALMA survey data of Class II disks. Primordial supernovae were the first, great nucleosynthetic engines in the Universe, forging the elements required for the later formation of planets and life. Here we show that planetesimals, the precursors of terrestrial planets, formed around low-mass stars in the debris of the first cosmic explosions 200 Myr after the Big Bang, before the first galaxies and far earlier than previously thought. A dense core in one of these explosions collapsed to a protoplanetary disk in which several Earth masses of planetesimals formed 0.46 - 1.66 AU from their parent 0.7 M$_{\odot}$ star, where equilibrium temperatures varied from 269 K to 186 K, in water mass fractions that were only a factor of a few less than in the Solar System today. Optically addressable electron spin clusters are of interest for quantum computation, simulation and sensing. However, with interaction length scales of a few tens of nanometers in the strong coupling regime, they are unresolved in conventional confocal microscopy, making individual readout problematic. Here we show that when using a single shot readout technique, collective states of the combined register space become accessible. By using spin to charge conversion of the defects we draw the connection between the intricate photon count statistics with spin state tomography using deep neural networks. This approach is particularly versatile with further scaling the number of constituent spins in a cluster due to complexity of the analytical treatment. We perform a proof of concept measurement of the correlated classical signal, paving the way for using our technique in realistic applications.

Scalable quantum networks rely on optical connections between long-lived qubits to distribute entanglement. Tin vacancies in diamond have emerged as promising long-lived qubits, offering extended spin coherence times at liquid helium temperatures and spin-dependent, highly coherent optical transitions for effective photon-based communication. Connecting remote nodes requires quantum interference of indistinguishable photons, which is challenging in an inhomogeneous solid-state environment. Here, we demonstrate a two-node experiment with tin vacancies in diamond, which exhibit a resonant frequency distribution spanning approximately 8 GHz. To overcome the frequency mismatch, we tune the resonant frequencies of one node using the Stark effect. We achieve tunability up to 4 GHz while maintaining optical coherence. As a demonstration, we achieve detuning-dependent remote two-photon interference between separate nodes, obtaining 80(6)% interference visibility without postprocessing when the defects' optical transitions are tuned into resonance, and 63(8)% with detuning up to 20 times their natural linewidths. These results highlight the potential of tin-vacancy centres in diamond for establishing robust optical links between remote quantum registers.

Accurately estimating the performance of quantum hardware is crucial for comparing different platforms and predicting the performance and feasibility of quantum algorithms and applications. In this paper, we tackle the problem of benchmarking a quantum register based on the NV center in diamond operating at room temperature. We define the connectivity map as well as single qubit performance. Thanks to an all-to-all connectivity the 2 and 3 qubit gates performance is promising and competitive among other platforms. We experimentally calibrate the error model for the register and use it to estimate the quantum volume, a metric used for quantifying the quantum computational capabilities of the register, of 8. Elemental abundances, particularly the C/O ratio, are seen as a way to connect the composition of planetary atmospheres with planet formation scenario and the disc chemical environment. We model the chemical composition of gas and ices in a self-gravitating disc on timescales of 0.5\,Myr since its formation to study the evolution of C/O ratio due to dust dynamics and growth, and phase transitions of the volatile species. We use the thin-disc hydrodynamic code FEOSAD, which includes disc self-gravity, thermal balance, dust evolution and turbulent diffusion, and treats dust as a dynamically different and evolving component interacting with the gas. It also describes freeze-out, sublimation and advection of four volatile species: H$_2$O, CO$_2$, CH$_4$ and CO. We demonstrate the effect of gas and dust substructures on the distribution of volatiles and C/O ratios, including the formation of multiple snowlines of one species, and point out the anticorrelation between dust-to-gas ratio and total C/O ratio emerging due to the contribution of oxygen-rich ice mantles. We identify time and spatial locations where two distinct trigger mechanisms for planet formation are operating and differentiate them by C/O ratio range: wide range of the C/O ratios of $0-1.4$ for streaming instability, and a much narrower range $0.3-0.6$ for gravitational instability (with the initial value of 0.34). This conclusion is corroborated by observations, showing that transiting exoplanets, which possibly experienced migration through a variety of disc conditions, have significantly larger spread of C/O in comparison with directly imaged exoplanets likely formed in gravitationally unstable outer disk regions. Learning-based downlink power control in cell-free massive multiple-input multiple-output (CFmMIMO) systems offers a promising alternative to conventional iterative optimization algorithms, which are computationally intensive due to online iterative steps. Existing learning-based methods, however, often fail to exploit the intrinsic structure of channel data and neglect pilot allocation information, leading to suboptimal performance, especially in large-scale networks with many users. This paper introduces the pilot contamination-aware power control (PAPC) transformer neural network, a novel approach that integrates pilot allocation data into the network, effectively handling pilot contamination scenarios. PAPC employs the attention mechanism with a custom masking technique to utilize structural information and pilot data. The architecture includes tailored preprocessing and post-processing stages for efficient feature extraction and adherence to power constraints. Trained in an unsupervised learning framework, PAPC is evaluated against the accelerated proximal gradient (APG) algorithm, showing comparable spectral efficiency fairness performance while significantly improving computational efficiency. Simulations demonstrate PAPC's superior performance over fully connected networks (FCNs) that lack pilot information, its scalability to large-scale CFmMIMO networks, and its computational efficiency improvement over APG. Nanoelectrical and photonic integration of quantum optical components is crucial for scalable solid-state quantum technologies. Silicon carbide stands out as a material with mature quantum defects and a wide variety of applications in semiconductor industry. Here, we study the behaviour of single silicon vacancy (V2) colour centres in a metal-semiconductor (Au/Ti/4H-SiC) epitaxial wafer device, operating in a Schottky diode configuration. We explore the depletion of free carriers in the vicinity of the defect, as well as electrical tuning of the defect optical transition lines. By detecting single charge traps, we investigate their impact on V2 optical line width. Additionally, we investigate the charge-photon-dynamics of the V2 centre and find its dominating photon-ionisation processes characteristic rate and wavelength dependence. Finally, we probe the spin coherence properties of the V2 system in the junction and demonstrate several key protocols for quantum network applications. Our work shows the first demonstration of low temperature integration of a Schottky device with optical microstructures for quantum applications and paves the way towards fundamentally scalable and reproducible optical spin defect centres in solids.

Fortran's prominence in scientific computing requires strategies to ensure both that legacy codes are efficient on high-performance computing systems, and that the language remains attractive for the development of new high-performance codes. Coarray Fortran (CAF), part of the Fortran 2008 standard introduced for parallel programming, facilitates distributed memory parallelism with a syntax familiar to Fortran programmers, simplifying the transition from single-processor to multi-processor coding. This research focuses on innovating and refining a parallel programming methodology that fuses the strengths of Intel Coarray Fortran, Nvidia CUDA Fortran, and OpenMP for distributed memory parallelism, high-speed GPU acceleration and shared memory parallelism respectively. We consider the management of pageable and pinned memory, CPU-GPU affinity in NUMA multiprocessors, and robust compiler interfacing with speed optimisation. We demonstrate our method through its application to a parallelised Poisson solver and compare the methodology, implementation, and scaling performance to that of the Message Passing Interface (MPI), finding CAF offers similar speeds with easier implementation. For new codes, this approach offers a faster route to optimised parallel computing. For legacy codes, it eases the transition to parallel computing, allowing their transformation into scalable, high-performance computing applications without the need for extensive re-design or additional syntax., Comment: Accepted to the Journal of Parallel and Distributed Computing

HMYSOs gain most of their mass in short bursts of accretion. Maser emission is an invaluable tool in discovering and probing accretion bursts. We observed the 22 GHz water maser response induced by the accretion burst in NGC6334I-MM1B and identified the underlying maser variability mechanisms. We report seven epochs of VLBI observations of 22 GHz water masers in NGC6334I with the VERA array, from 2014 to 2016, spanning the onset of the accretion burst in 2015.1. We also report 2019 ALMA observations of 321 GHz water masers and 22 GHz maser monitoring by HartRAO. We analyze variability patterns and use proper motions with the 22 GHz to 321 GHz line ratio to distinguish between masers in C-shocks and J-shocks. We also calculated the burst-to-quiescent variance ratio of the single-dish time series. The constant mean proper motion before and after the burst indicates that maser variability is due to excitation effects from variable radiation rather than jet ejecta. We find that the flux density variance ratio in the single-dish time series can identify maser efficiency variations in 22 GHz masers. The northern region, CM2-W2, is excited in C-shocks and showed long-term flaring with velocity-dependent excitation of new maser features. We propose that radiative heating of H2 due to high-energy radiation from the accretion burst be the mechanism for the flaring in CM2-W2. The southern regions are excited by J-shocks and have short-term flaring and dampening of water masers. We attributed the diverse variability patterns in the southern regions to the radiative transfer of the burst energy in the source. Our results indicate that the effects of source geometry, shock type, and incident radiation spectrum are fundamental factors affecting 22 GHz maser variability. Quantum networks and distributed quantum computers rely on entanglement generation between photons and long-lived quantum memories. For large-scale architectures, one of the most crucial parameters is the efficiency at which entanglement can be created and detected. Here, we maximize the efficiency for the detection of hybrid entanglement between a nuclear spin qubit in diamond with a photonic time-bin qubit. Our approach relies on an optimal implementation of the photonic qubit analyzer, for which we use a high-speed electro-optic deflector to direct photons deterministically along the optimal interferometer paths. This way, we completely eliminate all cases in which photons are randomly lost due to the propagation in the wrong interferometer path. In this first demonstration experiment, we use nitrogen-vacancy center in diamond, for which we immediately demonstrate the presence of the entanglement. An extension to other spin-photon entanglement systems is straightforward. Further, our scheme can be used in the framework of quantum repeater networks, including spectral and temporal multiplexing strategies. Our results thus pave the way for the future high-performance quantum networks.

PLATO (PLAnetary Transits and Oscillations of stars) is ESA's M3 mission designed to detect and characterise extrasolar planets and perform asteroseismic monitoring of a large number of stars. PLATO will detect small planets (down to <2 R_(Earth)) around bright stars (<11 mag), including terrestrial planets in the habitable zone of solar-like stars. With the complement of radial velocity observations from the ground, planets will be characterised for their radius, mass, and age with high accuracy (5 %, 10 %, 10 % for an Earth-Sun combination respectively). PLATO will provide us with a large-scale catalogue of well-characterised small planets up to intermediate orbital periods, relevant for a meaningful comparison to planet formation theories and to better understand planet evolution. It will make possible comparative exoplanetology to place our Solar System planets in a broader context. In parallel, PLATO will study (host) stars using asteroseismology, allowing us to determine the stellar properties with high accuracy, substantially enhancing our knowledge of stellar structure and evolution. The payload instrument consists of 26 cameras with 12cm aperture each. For at least four years, the mission will perform high-precision photometric measurements. Here we review the science objectives, present PLATO's target samples and fields, provide an overview of expected core science performance as well as a description of the instrument and the mission profile at the beginning of the serial production of the flight cameras. PLATO is scheduled for a launch date end 2026. This overview therefore provides a summary of the mission to the community in preparation of the upcoming operational phases.

In recent years, it has been demonstrated that massive stars see their infant circumstellar medium shaped into a large, irradiated, gravitationally unstable accretion disc during their early formation phase. Such discs constitute the gas reservoir in which nascent high-mass stars gain substantial fraction of their mass by episodic accretion of dense gaseous circumstellar clumps. We aim to evaluate the effects of stellar motion, caused by the disc non-axisymmetric gravitational field, on the disc evolution and its spatial morphology. In particular, we analyze the disc propensity to gravitational instability and fragmentation, and also disc appearance on synthetic millimeter-band images pertinent to the alma facility. We employed three-dimensional radiation-hydrodynamical simulations of the surroundings of a young massive star in the non-inertial spherical coordinate system, adopting the highest spatial resolution to date and including the indirect star-disc gravitational potential caused by the asymmetries in the circumstellar disc. The resulting disc were postprocessed with the radiation transfer tool RADMC-3D and CASA softwear to obtain disc synthetic images. The redistribution of angular momentum in the system makes the disc smaller and rounder, reduces the number of circumstellar gaseous clumps formed via disc gravitational fragmentation, and prevents the ejection of gaseous clumps from the disc. The synthetic predictive images at millimeter wavelengths of the accretion disc including stellar wobbling are in better agreement with the observations of the surroundings of massive young stellar objects, namely, AFGL 4176 mm1, G17.64+0.16 and G353.273, than our numerical hydrodynamics simulations omitting this physical mechanism. Aims. A new mechanism of dust accumulation and planetesimal formation in a gravitationally unstable disk with suppressed magnetorotational instability is studied and compared with the classical dead zone in a layered disk model. Methods. We use numerical hydrodynamics simulations in the thin-disk limit FEOSAD code to model the formation and long-term evolution of gravitationally unstable disks, including dust dynamics and growth. Results. We found that in gravitationally unstable disks with a radially varying strength of gravitational instability a region of low mass and angular momentum transport forms in the inner several astronomical units. This region is characterized by low effective \alpha_GI and is similar in characteristics to the dead zone in the layered disk model. As the disk forms and evolves, the GI-induced dead zone accumulates a massive dust ring, which is susceptible to the development of the streaming instability. The model and observationally inferred dust masses and radii may differ significantly in gravitationally unstable disks with massive inner dust rings. Conclusions. The early occurrence of the GI-induced dust ring followed by the presumed development of the streaming instability suggest that this mechanism may form the first generation of planetesimals in the inner terrestrial zone of the disk. The proposed mechanism, however, crucially depends on the susceptibility of the disk to gravitational instability and requires that the magnetorotational instability be suppressed., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics

The Spin Physics Detector collaboration proposes to install a universal detector in the second interaction point of the NICA collider under construction (JINR, Dubna) to study the spin structure of the proton and deuteron and other spin-related phenomena using a unique possibility to operate with polarized proton and deuteron beams at a collision energy up to 27 GeV and a luminosity up to $10^{32}$ cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$. As the main goal, the experiment aims to provide access to the gluon TMD PDFs in the proton and deuteron, as well as the gluon transversity distribution and tensor PDFs in the deuteron, via the measurement of specific single and double spin asymmetries using different complementary probes such as charmonia, open charm, and prompt photon production processes. Other polarized and unpolarized physics is possible, especially at the first stage of NICA operation with reduced luminosity and collision energy of the proton and ion beams. This document is dedicated exclusively to technical issues of the SPD setup construction.

In the context of planet formation, growth from micron-sized grains to kilometer-sized planetesimals is a crucial question. Since the dust growth rate depends on the amount of dust, realizing planet formation scenarios based on dust growth is challenging in environments with low metallicity, i.e. less dust. We investigate dust growth during disk evolution, particularly focusing on the relationship with metallicity. We perform two-dimensional thin-disk hydrodynamic simulations to track the disk evolution over 300 kyr from its formation. The dust motion is solved separately from the gas motion, with its distribution changing due to drag forces from the gas. Dust size growth is also accounted for, with the magnitude of the drag force varying according to the dust size. We employ three models with metallicities of 1.0, 0.1, and 0.01 ${\rm Z}_{\odot}$, i.e. dust-to-gas mass ratios of 10$^{-2}$, 10$^{-3}$, and 10$^{-4}$, respectively. In the disks with the metallicities $\ge0.1$ ${\rm Z}_{\odot}$, the dust radii reach cm sizes, consistent with estimations from the dust growth timescale. Conversely, for the metallicity of 0.01 ${\rm Z}_{\odot}$, the maximum dust size is only 10$^{-2}$ cm, with almost no growth observed across the entire disk scale ($\sim$100 au). At the metallicities $\ge0.1$ ${\rm Z}_{\odot}$, the decoupling between grown dust and gas leads to non-uniform dust-to-gas mass ratios. However, deviations from the canonical value of this ratio have no impact on the gravitational instability of the disk. The formation of dust rings is confirmed in the innermost part of the disk ($\sim$10--30 au). The dust rings where the dust-to-gas mass ratio is enhanced, and the Stokes number reaches $\sim$0.1, are suitable environments for the streaming instability. The formation of solid macroscopic grains (pebbles) in protoplanetary discs is the first step toward planet formation. We aim to study the distribution of pebbles and the chemical composition of their ice mantles in a young protoplanetary disc. We use the two-dimensional hydrodynamical code FEOSAD in the thin-disc approximation, which is designed to model the global evolution of a self-gravitating viscous protoplanetary disc taking into account dust coagulation and fragmentation, thermal balance, and phase transitions and transport of the main volatiles (H$_2$O, CO$_{2}$, CH$_{4}$ and CO), which can reside in the gas, on small dust ($<1$ $\mu$m), on grown dust ($>1$ $\mu$m) and on pebbles. We model the dynamics of the protoplanetary disc from the cloud collapse to the 500 kyr moment. We determine the spatial distribution of pebbles and composition of their ice mantles and estimate the mass of volatiles on pebbles, grown dust and small dust. We show that pebbles form as early as 50 kyr after the disc formation and exist until the end of simulation (500 kyr), providing prerequisites for planet formation. All pebbles formed in the model are covered by icy mantles. Using a model considering accretion and desorption of volatiles onto dust/pebbles, we find that the ice mantles on pebbles consist mainly of H$_2$O and CO$_{2}$, and are carbon-depleted compared to gas and ices on small and grown dust, which contain more CO and CH$_4$. The use of one-bit analog-to-digital converter (ADC) has been considered as a viable alternative to high resolution counterparts in realizing and commercializing massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. However, the issue of discarding the amplitude information by one-bit quantizers has to be compensated. Thus, carefully tailored methods need to be developed for one-bit channel estimation and data detection as the conventional ones cannot be used. To address these issues, the problems of one-bit channel estimation and data detection for MIMO orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) system that operates over uncorrelated frequency selective channels are investigated here. We first develop channel estimators that exploit Gaussian discriminant analysis (GDA) classifier and approximated versions of it as the so-called weak classifiers in an adaptive boosting (AdaBoost) approach. Particularly, the combination of the approximated GDA classifiers with AdaBoost offers the benefit of scalability with the linear order of computations, which is critical in massive MIMO-OFDM systems. We then take advantage of the same idea for proposing the data detectors. Numerical results validate the efficiency of the proposed channel estimators and data detectors compared to other methods. They show comparable/better performance to that of the state-of-the-art methods, but require dramatically lower computational complexities and run times.

FU Orionis type objects (fuors) are characterized by rapid (tens to hundreds years) episodic outbursts, during which the luminosity increases by orders of magnitude. One of the possible causes of such events is a close encounter between stars and protoplanetary disks. Numerical simulations show that the fuor-like outburst ignition requires a very close encounter ranging from a few to a few tens of au. In contrast, the observed stellar objects in fuor binaries are usually hundreds of au apart. Simple mathematical estimates show that if such a close approach took place, the binary stellar components would have an unrealistic relative velocity, at least an order of magnitude greater than the observed velocity dispersion in young stellar clusters. Thus, the bursts are either triggered with a certain delay after passage of the periastron or their ignition does not necessary require a close encounter and hence the outburst is not caused by the primordial gravitational perturbation of the protoplanetary disk. In this work, an encounter of a star surrounded by a protoplanetary disk with a diskless external stellar object was modeled using numerical hydrodynamics simulations. We showed that even fly-bys with a relatively large periastron (at least 500 au) can result in fuor-like outbursts. Moreover, the delay between the periastron passage and the burst ignition can reach several kyr. It was shown for the first time by means of numerical modeling that the perturbation of the disk caused by the external object can trigger a cascade process, which includes the development of the thermal instability in the innermost disk followed by the magneto-rotational instability ignition. Because of the sequential development of these instabilities, the rapid increase in the accretion rate occurs, resulting in the luminosity increase by more than two orders of magnitude., Comment: Accepted for publication by Astronomy Reports

Nuclear spins in solids offer a promising avenue for developing scalable quantum hardware. Leveraging nearby single-color centers, these spins can be efficiently addressed at the single-site level through spin resonance. However, characterising individual nuclear spins is quite cumbersome since the characterisation protocols may differ depending on the strength of the hyperfine coupling, necessitating tailored approaches and experimental conditions. While modified electron spin Hahn echoes like CPMG and XY8 pulse sequences are commonly employed, they encounter significant limitations in scenarios involving spin-1/2 systems, strongly coupled spins, or nuclear spin baths comprising distinct isotopes. Here, we present a more straightforward approach for determining the hyperfine interactions among each nuclear and the electron spin. This method holds promise across diverse platforms, especially for emerging S=1/2 group IV defects in diamond (e.g., SiV, GeV, SnV, PbV) or silicon (T-centre, P-donors). We provide a theoretical framework and adapt it for color-centers exhibiting various spins. Test of {macroscopic realism} (MR) is key to understanding the foundation of quantum mechanics. Due to the existence of the {non-invasive measurability} loophole and other interpretation loopholes, however, such test remains an open question. Here we propose a general inequality based on high-order correlations of measurements for a loophole-free test of MR at the weak signal limit. Importantly, the inequality is established using the statistics of \textit{raw data} recorded by classical devices, without requiring a specific model for the measurement process, so its violation would falsify MR without the interpretation loophole. The non-invasive measurability loophole is also closed, since the weak signal limit can be verified solely by measurement data (using the relative scaling behaviors of different orders of correlations). We demonstrate that the inequality can be broken by a quantum spin model. The inequality proposed here provides an unambiguous test of the MR principle and is also useful to characterizing {quantum coherence}.

Quantum state readout is a key requirement for a successful qubit platform. In this work we demonstrate a high fidelity quantum state readout of a V2 center nuclear spin based on a repetitive readout technique. We demonstrate up to 99.5$\,\%$ readout fidelity and 99$\,\%$ for state preparation. Using this efficient readout we initialise the nuclear spin by measurement and demonstrate its Rabi and Ramsey nutation. Aims. The initial stages of planet formation may start concurrently with the formation of a gas-dust protoplanetary disk. This makes the study of the earliest stages of protoplanetary disk formation crucially important. Here we focus on dust growth and pebble formation in a protoplanetary disk that is still accreting from a parental cloud core. Methods. We have developed an original three-dimensional numerical hydrodynamics code, which computes the collapse of rotating clouds and disk formation on nested meshes using a novel hybrid Coarray Fortran-OpenMP approach for distributed and shared memory parallelization. Dust dynamics and growth are also included in the simulations. Results. We found that the dust growth from $\sim 1~\mu$m to 1-10~mm already occurs in the initial few thousand years of disk evolution but the Stokes number hardly exceeds 0.1 because of higher disk densities and temperatures compared to the minimum mass Solar nebular. The ratio of the dust-to-gas vertical scale heights remains rather modest, 0.2--0.5, which may be explained by the perturbing action of spiral arms that develop in the disk soon after its formation. The dust-to-gas mass ratio in the disk midplane is highly nonhomogeneous throughout the disk extent and is in general enhanced by a factor of several compared to the fiducial 1:100 value. Low St hinders strong dust accumulation in the spiral arms compared to the rest of the disk and the nonsteady nature of the spirals is also an obstacle. The spatial distribution of pebbles in the disk midplane exhibits a highly nonhomogeneous and patchy character. The total mass of pebbles in the disk increases with time and reaches a few tens of Earth masses after a few tens of thousand years of disk evolution. The effect of accretion bursts on massive young stellar objects (MYSOs) represents a new research field in the study of young stars and their environment. We aim to investigate the impact of an accretion burst on massive disks with different types of envelopes and to study the effects of an accretion burst on the temperature structure and the chemistry of the disk. We focus on water and methanol as chemical species for this paper. The thermochemical code of PRODIMO (PROtoplanetary DIsk MOdel) is used to perform simulation of high mass protoplanetary disk models with different types of envelopes under the presence of an accretion burst. The models in question represent different evolutionary stages of protostellar objects. We calculate and show the chemical abundances in three phases of the simulation (pre-burst, burst, and post-burst). More heavily embedded disks show higher temperatures. The impact of the accretion burst is mainly characterized by the desorption of chemical species present in the disk and envelope from the dust grains to the gas phase. When the post-burst phase starts, the sublimated species freeze out again. The degree of sublimation depends strongly on the type of envelope the disk is embedded in. An accretion burst in more massive envelopes produces stronger desorption of the chemical species. However, our models show that the timescale for the chemistry to reach the pre-burst state is independent of the type of envelope. The study shows that the disk's temperature increases with a more massive envelope enclosing it. Thus, the chemistry of MYSOs in earlier stages of their evolution reacts stronger to an accretion burst than at later stages where the envelope has lost most of its mass or has been dissipated. Object-centric architectures usually apply a differentiable module to the entire feature map to decompose it into sets of entity representations called slots. Some of these methods structurally resemble clustering algorithms, where the cluster's center in latent space serves as a slot representation. Slot Attention is an example of such a method, acting as a learnable analog of the soft k-means algorithm. Our work employs a learnable clustering method based on the Gaussian Mixture Model. Unlike other approaches, we represent slots not only as centers of clusters but also incorporate information about the distance between clusters and assigned vectors, leading to more expressive slot representations. Our experiments demonstrate that using this approach instead of Slot Attention improves performance in object-centric scenarios, achieving state-of-the-art results in the set property prediction task., Comment: Published as a conference paper at ICLR 2024

Nuclear spins with hyperfine coupling to single electron spins are highly valuable quantum bits. In this work we probe and characterise the particularly rich nuclear spin environment around single silicon vacancy color-centers (V2) in 4H-SiC. By using the electron spin-3/2 qudit as a 4 level sensor, we identify several groups of $^{29}$Si and $^{13}$C nuclear spins through their hyperfine interaction. We extract the major components of their hyperfine coupling via optical detected nuclear resonance, and assign them to shell groups in the crystal via the DFT simulations. We utilise the ground state level anti-crossing of the electron spin for dynamic nuclear polarization and achieve a nuclear spin polarization of up to $98\pm6\,\%$. We show that this scheme can be used to detect the nuclear magnetic resonance signal of individual spins and demonstrate their coherent control. The thermal instability of accretion disks is widely used to explain the activity of cataclysmic variables, but its development in protoplanetary disks has been studied in less detail. We present a semi-analytical stationary model for calculating the midplane temperature of a gas and dust disk around a young star. The model takes into account gas and dust opacities, as well as the evaporation of dust at temperatures above 1000 K. Using this model, we calculate the midplane temperature distributions of the disk under various assumptions about the source of opacity and the presence of dust. We show that when all considered processes are taken into account, the heat balance equation in the region r<1 au has multiple temperature solutions. Thus, the conditions for thermal instability are met in this region. To illustrate the possible influence of instability on the accretion state in a protoplanetary disk, we consider a viscous disk model with alpha parameterization of turbulent viscosity. We show that in such a model the disk evolution is non-stationary, with alternating phases of accumulation of matter in the inner disk and its rapid accretion onto the star, leading to an episodic accretion pattern. Direct imaging observations of planets revealed that wide-orbit ($>10$ au) giant planets exist even around subsolar-metallicity host stars and do not require metal-rich environments for their formation. A possible formation mechanism of wide-orbit giant planets in subsolar-metallicity environments is the gravitational fragmentation of massive protoplanetary discs. Here, we follow the long-term evolution of the disc for 1 Myr after its formation, which is comparable to disc lifetime, by way of a two-dimensional thin-disc hydrodynamic simulation with the metallicity of 0.1 ${\rm Z}_{\odot}$. We find a giant protoplanet that survives until the end of the simulation. The protoplanet is formed by the merger of two gaseous clumps at $\sim$0.5 Myr after disc formation, and then it orbits $\sim$200 au from the host star for $\sim$0.5 Myr. The protoplanet's mass is $\sim$10 ${\rm M}_{\rm J}$ at birth and gradually decreases to 1 ${\rm M}_{\rm J}$ due to the tidal effect from the host star. The result provides the minimum mass of 1 ${\rm M}_{\rm J}$ for protoplanets formed by gravitational instability in a subsolar-metallicity disc. We anticipate that the mass of a protoplanet experiencing reduced mass loss thanks to the protoplanetary contraction in higher resolution simulations can increase to $\sim$10 ${\rm M}_{\rm J}$. We argue that the disc gravitational fragmentation would be a promising pathway to form wide-orbit giant planets with masses of $\ge1$ ${\rm M}_{\rm J}$ in subsolar-metallicity environments., Comment: 11 pages, 8 figures, submitted to MNRAS

We compute the evolution and rotational periods of young stars, using the MESA code, starting from a stellar seed, and take protostellar accretion, stellar winds, and the magnetic star-disk interaction into account. Furthermore, we add a certain fraction of the energy of accreted material into the stellar interior as additional heat and combine the resulting effects on stellar evolution with the stellar spin model. For different combinations of parameters, stellar periods at an age of 1~Myr range between 0.6~days and 12.9~days. Thus, during the relatively short time period of 1~Myr, a significant amount of stellar angular momentum can already be removed by the interaction between the star and its accretion disk. The amount of additional heat added into the stellar interior, the accretion history, and the presence of disk and stellar winds have the strongest impact on the stellar spin evolution during the first million years. The slowest stellar rotations result from a combination of strong magnetic fields, a large amount of additional heat, and effective winds. The fastest rotators combine weak magnetic fields and ineffective winds or result from a small amount of additional heat added to the star. Scenarios that could lead to such configurations are discussed. Different initial rotation periods of the stellar seed, on the other hand, quickly converges and do not affect the stellar period at all. Our model matches up to 90\% of the observed rotation periods in six young ($\lesssim 3$~Myr) clusters. Based on these intriguing results, we motivate to combine our model with a hydrodynamic disk evolution code to self-consistently include several important aspects such as episodic accretion events, magnetic disk winds, internal, and external photo-evaporation. Modeling the dynamics of the formation and evolution of protostellar disks as well as the history of stellar mass accretion typically involve the numerical solution of complex systems of coupled differential equations. The resulting mass accretion history of protostars is known to be highly episodic due to recurrent instabilities and also exhibits short timescale flickering. By leveraging the strong predictive abilities of neural networks, we extract some of the critical temporal dynamics experienced during the mass accretion including periods of instability. Particularly, we utilize a novel form of the Echo-State Neural Network (ESN), which has been shown to efficiently deal with data having inherent nonlinearity. We introduce the use of Optimized-ESN (Opt-ESN) to make model-independent time series forecasting of mass accretion rate in the evolution of protostellar disks. We apply the network to multiple hydrodynamic simulations with different initial conditions and exhibiting a variety of temporal dynamics to demonstrate the predictability of the Opt-ESN model. The model is trained on simulation data of $\sim 1-2$ Myr, and achieves predictions with a low normalized mean square error ($\sim 10^{-5}$ to $10^{-3}$) for forecasts ranging between 100 and 3800 yr. Most existing convolutional dictionary learning (CDL) algorithms are based on batch learning, where the dictionary filters and the convolutional sparse representations are optimized in an alternating manner using a training dataset. When large training datasets are used, batch CDL algorithms become prohibitively memory-intensive. An online-learning technique is used to reduce the memory requirements of CDL by optimizing the dictionary incrementally after finding the sparse representations of each training sample. Nevertheless, learning large dictionaries using the existing online CDL (OCDL) algorithms remains highly computationally expensive. In this paper, we present a novel approximate OCDL method that incorporates sparse decomposition of the training samples. The resulting optimization problems are addressed using the alternating direction method of multipliers. Extensive experimental evaluations using several image datasets show that the proposed method substantially reduces computational costs while preserving the effectiveness of the state-of-the-art OCDL algorithms.

Aims. Our aim is to derive a fast and accurate method for computing the gravitational potential of astrophysical objects with high contrasts in density, for which nested or adaptive meshes are required. Methods. We present an extension of the convolution method for computing the gravitational potential to the nested Cartesian grids. The method makes use of the convolution theorem to compute the gravitational potential using its integral form. Results. A comparison of our method with the iterative outside-in conjugate gradient and generalized minimal residual methods for solving the Poisson equation using nonspherically symmetric density configurations has shown a comparable performance in terms of the errors relative to the analytic solutions. However, the convolution method is characterized by several advantages and outperforms the considered iterative methods by factors 10--200 in terms of the runtime, especially when graphics processor units are utilized. The convolution method also shows an overall second-order convergence, except for the errors at the grid interfaces where the convergence is linear. Conclusions. High computational speed and ease in implementation can make the convolution method a preferred choice when using a large number of nested grids. The convolution method, however, becomes more computationally costly if the dipole moments of tightly spaced gravitating objects are to be considered at coarser grids., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics
