The component model of human parenting has been extensively used to study parents' interactions with their offspring and to examine variation across cultural contexts. The current study applies this model to nonhuman primates to investigate which forms of parenting humans share with other primates and how these interactions change over infants' first year of life. We repeatedly observed 52 mother-infant pairs, including humans (N = 11), chimpanzees and bonobos (N = 21), and several species of small apes (N = 20), during different daily activities when infants were 1, 6, and 12 months of age. Humans differed from apes in their higher probability of face-to-face contact and the use of object stimulation. Moreover, parenting seemed to be characterized by more variability within humans than within and possibly between ape species. Overall, the component model of parenting appears to be an effective tool to study the functional systems of parenting behavior in a comparative developmental perspective, by allowing direct comparisons between human and non-human primate species across development.

This article presents the epistemological complexity inherent in the roll out of an international project on Disaster and Risk Reduction, and consequently about science education in the Indigenous context of Turkana County in Kenya. After an introduction that explains the current state of Disaster and Risk Reduction, the paper focuses on the 'Paper Volcanoes Laboratory' program and toolkit for children and teachers, which aims to spread awareness about natural hazards among children. The paper argues that the geographical, social and educational context where the project is carried out is critical to consider, and decolonial studies provide a conceptual and theoretical framework for this project. This allows to recognize reproduction of infantilization of Indigenous people and children through Western knowledge and science if implemented without consideration for local contexts, and demonstrates how Western educational projects have been a tool of discrimination and colonization. However, at the same time, it opens up the possibility for a dialogue and an encounter between the different epistemologies present in a project that was conceptualized within the Western context, but is to be carried out in Turkana County in Kenya.

Abstract Behavioral contagion is thought to play a significant role in social synchronization and coordination across animal taxa. While there is extensive evidence of behavioral contagion in Haplorrhines (i.e. monkeys and apes), limited research exists in Strepsirrhines (i.e. lemurs). Here, we aimed to investigate the presence of contagious yawning and scratching in two captive groups of black-and-white ruffed lemurs (Varecia variegata) (N = 4) and red ruffed lemurs (Varecia rubra) (N = 4), and further test whether behavioral contagion is modulated by the model’s social integration in the group. We conducted all occurrence sampling to examine whether individuals observing a yawning or scratching event (i.e. trigger event) were more likely to yawn or scratch in the following 2 min, as compared to individuals who did not observe it. We ran generalized linear mixed models and found that the likelihood of yawning and scratching was higher for subjects observing the trigger event than for subjects who did not observe the event, although the model’s social integration had no modulating effect on the probability of showing behavioral contagion. Our findings represent the first evidence of behavioral contagion in this genus and contribute to shed light on the distribution and the possible adaptive function of this phenomenon in primates.

Abstract Background Although second-generation antipsychotics (SGAs) have proven to be effective therapeutic options for patients with schizophrenia, there is a notable lack of evidence on patients’ subjective perspectives regarding their well-being, quality of life, and satisfaction with these medications. This study aimed to evaluate the treatment satisfaction and effectiveness of lurasidone on quality of life and functioning in adult patients with schizophrenia in real-world Italian clinical practice. Methods This was a multicentre, national, non-interventional, single-arm, 3-month prospective study. Patients who were naive to lurasidone treatment and whose treating physician had decided to start them on this medication were enrolled and evaluated over a 3-month period. Eligible patients were adults (≥ 18 years of age) with a primary diagnosis of schizophrenia who were being treated with lurasidone (for the first time [i.e., they were lurasidone naive]) as part of routine clinical practice. Efficacy endpoints were changes in patient/caregiver treatment satisfaction (seven-point Likert scale from the Treatment Satisfaction Questionnaire for Medication), patient quality of life and functioning (QLS), investigator-rated global assessment of functioning (CGI-S, IAQ) after 6 weeks and 3 months of lurasidone, and number of relapses and hospitalizations. Results Sixty-one patients were enrolled and 59 completed the study. The median dosage of lurasidone at baseline was 37.00 mg/day. The median duration of titration was 86.0 days (Min 28; Max 115 days); the median number of dosage changes was 1.0. At the end of 3-month observation period, the median dose of lurasidone was 74.00 mg/day. QoL and Functioning Score showed a trend of improvement over time, reaching a mean change from baseline of 9.8 at the end of the study. According to the CGI-S, the percentage of patients who were “markedly or severely ill” showed a continuous decrease from baseline to 3 months, from 62.29% to 8.20%. Patient satisfaction increased over time, with 80.32% of patients reporting that they were somewhat, fairly, or very satisfied (including 63.93% who were completely or very satisfied) at the end of the study. No relapses/hospitalizations for psychiatric reasons were reported. Lurasidone was well tolerated with no safety concerns or discontinuations due to AEs. Conclusions Lurasidone represents a valid option for the treatment of schizophrenia and positively affects subjective well-being, quality of life and satisfaction. Bordetella's genome contains a large family of periplasmic binding proteins (PBPs) known as Bugs, whose functions are mainly unassigned. Two members, Bug27 and Bug69, have previously been considered potential candidates for the uptake of small pyridine precursors, possibly linked to NAD biosynthesis. Here, we show an in vitro affinity of Bug27 and Bug69 for quinolinate in the submicromolar range, with a marked preference over other NAD precursors. A combined sequence similarity network and genome context analysis identifies a cluster of Bug69/27 homologs that are genomically associated with the NAD transcriptional regulator NadQ and the enzyme quinolinate phosphoribosyltransferase (QaPRT, gene nadC), suggesting a functional linkage to NAD metabolism. Integrating molecular docking and structure‐based multiple alignments confirms that quinolinate is the preferred ligand for Bug27 and Bug69.

The objective of this retrospective observational study was to estimate the prevalence of actinic keratosis (AK) in individuals aged ≥ 40 years in France, to describe the characteristics of affected patients, and to describe treatments. A representative panel of 20,000 households with ≥ 1 member aged ≥ 40 years were invited to participate. Participants who reported AK lesions diagnosed by a physician were eligible. The study questionnaire collected data on demographics, lesion characteristics, Fitzpatrick phototype, diagnosis, and treatments. In total, 15,246 questionnaires (78.5%) were returned and 639 responders were eligible. The adjusted prevalence of AK was 4.03% (95% CI: 3.73–4.35). CCR5 is the main co-receptor for HIV-1 cell entry and it plays key roles in HIV-1 mucosal transmission. Natural anti-CCR5 antibodies were found in HIV-1-exposed seronegative and long-term non-progressor subjects, suggesting a role in controlling viral replication in vivo. We assessed the effect of sera containing or not natural anti-CCR5 antibodies, on membrane CCR5 level and HIV-1 infection in primary macrophages. Sera modulated CCR5 expression with a trend dependent on the donor/serum tested but independent on the presence or absence of anti-CCR5 antibodies. All sera strongly reduced HIV-1 DNA in all donor's macrophages and no correlation was observed between CCR5 and viral DNA levels. These results suggest that CCR5 expression level is not a major determinant of macrophage infection and that the observed modulation of CCR5 and HIV-1 DNA might depend on factors other than CCR5-reactive antibodies present in sera and/or intrinsic to the donors on which sera were tested.

ABSTRACTThis study compares the performance of ensemble machine learning methods stacking, blending, and soft voting for Landslide susceptibility mapping (LSM) in a highly affected Northern Italy region, Lombardy. We first created a spatial database based on open data ensuring the accessibility to relevant information for landslide-influencing factors, historical landslide records, and areas with a very low probability of landslide occurrence called ‘No Landslide Zone’, an innovative concept introduced in this study. Then, open-source software was employed for developing five Machine Learning classifiers (Bagging, Random Forests, AdaBoost, Gradient Tree Boosting, and Neural Networks) which were tested at a basin scale by implementing different combinations of training and testing schemes using three use cases. The three classifiers with the highest generalization performance (Random Forests, AdaBoost, and Neural Networks) were selected and combined by ensemble methods. The soft voting showed the highest performance among them. The best model to generate the LSM for the Lombardy region was a Neural Network model trained using data from three basins, achieving an accuracy of 0.93 in Lombardy. The LSM indicates that 37% of Lombardy is in the highest landslide susceptibility categories. Our findings highlight the importance of openness in advancing LSM not only by enhancing the reproducibility and transparency of our methodology but also by promoting knowledge-sharing within the scientific community.

Torpor is a state used by several mammals to survive harsh winters and avoid predation, characterized by a drastic reduction in metabolic rate followed by a decrease in body temperature, heart rate, and many physiological variables. During torpor, all organs and systems must adapt to the new low-energy expenditure conditions to preserve physiological homeostasis. These adaptations may be exploited in a translational perspective in several fields. Recently, many features of torpor were shown to be mimicked in non-hibernators by the inhibition of neurons within the brainstem region of the Raphe Pallidus. The physiological resemblance of this artificial state, called synthetic torpor, with natural torpor has so far been described only in physiological terms, but no data have been shown regarding the induced morphological changes. Here, we show the first description of the ultrastructural changes in the liver, kidney, lung, skeletal muscle, and testis induced by a 6-hours inhibition of Raphe Pallidus neurons in a non-hibernating species, the rat.

The Raphe Pallidus (RPa) is a brainstem nucleus containing sympathetic premotor neurons that control thermogenesis and modulate cardiovascular function. It receives inputs from various hypothalamic areas, including the Lateral Hypothalamus (LH), a heterogeneous region intricately involved in several autonomic and behavioral functions. A key subpopulation of neurons in the LH expresses orexin/hypocretin, a neuropeptide which is crucially involved in the regulation of the wake–sleep states and feeding behavior. The RPa receives orexinergic projections from the LH and orexinergic signalling in the RPa has been shown to enhance thermogenesis in the anaesthetized rat, but only in the presence of an already existing thermogenic drive, without significantly affecting cardiovascular function. The present work was aimed at exploring the effects on thermoregulation and autonomic function and the possible role in the modulation of the wake–sleep states and feeding behavior of orexin injection in the RPa in the free-behaving rat. In order to assess the influence of an already present thermogenic drive on orexinergic signalling in the RPa, animals were studied at three different ambient temperatures (Ta, 10°C, 24°C, and 32°C). We found that orexin injection into the RPa variably affected the wake–sleep states, autonomic functions, motor activity, and feeding behavior, at the different Tas. In particular, in the first post-injection hour, we observed an increase in wakefulness, which was large at Ta 24°C and Ta 10°C and rather mild at Ta 32°C. Deep brain temperature was increased by orexin injection at Ta 10°C, but not at either Ta 24°C or Ta 32°C. Moreover, an increase in mean arterial blood pressure occurred at Ta 24°C, which was probably masked by the high baseline levels at Ta 10°C and was completely absent at Ta 32°C. Finally, an enhancement in feeding behavior was observed at Ta 24°C and 10°C only. In accordance with what observed in anaesthetized rats, orexinergic signalling in the RPa seems to be ineffective in the absence of any thermogenic drive. Moreover, the effects observed on the wake–sleep states and feeding behavior introduce the RPa as a novel player in the central neural network promoting wakefulness and feeding.

The agricultural sector faces significant challenges, including resource depletion, climate change, and a growing global population projected to reach 9 billion by 2050, requiring a 70% increase in food production. Innovative techniques like soilless farming are gaining attention as potential solutions to ensure sustainable food production. Although other bibliometric reviews have examined the possibilities of soilless farming technologies, focusing separately on certain fields such as hydroponics, aquaponics, and aeroponics, the novelty of this analysis is to provide a comprehensive view of soilless farming in the current research landscape. Using VOSviewer software (1.6.20), the study conducts a thorough analysis of 256 articles, looking at key themes, emerging trends and influential works in the field. The results showed the relevance of soilless farming and its strong link to field such as digitalization, sustainable food production, and biofortification. A strong promising area is the connection between soilless farming and urban agriculture, investigated as a theoretical tool to implement these systems in sustainable cities. The major gap emerged in the research is the lack of studies on the economic feasibility. According to the study’s findings, policymakers ought to concentrate on allocating specific funds to encourage the adoption of soilless farming, especially in urban areas.

In chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL), natural killer (NK) cells show a dysfunctional phenotype that correlates with disease progression. Our aim was to restore NK cell functionality in CLL through a specifically targeted IL15-stimulating activity; IL15 targeting could, in fact, potentiate the activity of NK cells and reduce off-target effects. We designed and developed a cis-acting immunocytokine composed of an anti-CD56 single-chain Fragment variable (scFv) and IL15, labeled scFvB1IL15. scFvB1IL15 was tested in vitro on peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) obtained from both different healthy donors (HDs) and CLL patients in order to evaluate its ability to target NK cells and enhance their activation and NK-mediated directed cytotoxicity. scFvB1IL15 specifically induced strong degranulation and cytokine and chemokine production in NK cells in both HD- and CLL patient-derived PBMC samples. Furthermore, compared to IL15 alone, it was able to induce higher levels of NKG2D- and NKp30-activating receptors and restore NK-mediated direct killing in the CLL patient-derived samples. The preliminary data presented in this work suggest that IL15’s targeting of NK cells via scFvB1 potentiates the effects of IL15 and that scFvB1IL15 can be a useful agent for overcoming NK functional gaps and contribute to NK-cell-based immunotherapies.

In Malawi, tetanus toxoid vaccination (TTV) is recommended in pregnancy, but few studies have assessed the prevalence of infant seroprotection against tetanus. Anti-TT levels from 84 6-week-old infants, born in 2019–2020 to mothers living with HIV (HEU: HIV-exposed-uninfected) infants and to HIV-negative women (HUU: HIV-unexposed-uninfected) infants were determined by ELISA assay. Although 94% of the infants (HEU=94.8%, HUU=92.3%) showed protective levels (>0.1 IU/mL), the mean titers observed (0.51 IU/mL) suggest an incomplete compliance with TT vaccination. The only factor positively correlated to anti-TT IgG levels was the duration of maternal antiretroviral therapy in HEU.

Assessment and feedback are common sources of student dissatisfaction within higher education, and employers have shown dissatisfaction with graduates' communication skills. Authentic assessment, containing 'real-world' context and student collaboration, provides a means to address both issues simultaneously. We discuss how we used authentic assessment within a biological sciences degree programme, replacing an individually written essay coursework assignment with learner-generated podcasts. We outline our implementation strategy in line with existing theory on learner-generated digital media, assessment for learning and self-regulated learning. Quantitative and qualitative analysis of survey data (2020 and 2021) indicate students prefer podcast assignments over traditional essay coursework, perceiving them to be more enjoyable, authentic, allowing for greater creativity, and better for building their confidence as communicators. Podcasting as an assessment may have a positive influence on knowledge retention and promote deep learning too. Our assessment design provides opportunities for community building, formative peer review and enhancing assessment literacy, while also being flexible enough to be used across any discipline of study and/or as an inter-disciplinary assessment.

Although he represents an essential figure for a full understanding of the phenomenon of so-called Italian noir, which has developed since the first decade of the 2000s, Luigi Bernardi remains a profile to which academic criticism has not paid due attention. This article proposes a path of analysis that looks at both Bernardi as an author and as an essayist, considering his Atlante freddo trilogy, first published in a single volume in 2006, and two non-fiction texts such as A sangue caldo (2001) and Il male stanco (2003). The aim of this study will be to highlight the value and uniqueness of Bernardi’s work in the context of Italian crime fiction.

Introduction: Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) in children is characterized by repeated episodes of partial or complete obstruction of the upper airways that impair normal ventilation and cause hypoxia and sleep disruption. These episodes activate innate and adaptive immunity resulting in the production of proinflammatory cytokines: IL-1β, IL-6, TNF-α, and reactive oxygen species. The hypothalamic–pituitary–adrenal (HPT) axis is also activated with alteration of the circadian rhythm of cortisol synthesis. OSA in children, and even more in adults, induces a systemic inflammatory condition that contributes to the genesis of clinical complications: poor growth, learning disabilities, cardiovascular changes, insulin resistance, and metabolic syndrome. Methods: A total of 42 non-obese children (age 1–15 years) were enrolled among those sent to our sleep center to perform full polysomnography (PSG). After PSG, 6 children did not show OSA (controls), 20 had mild OSA (m OSA), and 16 had medium-severe OSA (MS OSA). In vitro IL-1β, TNF-α, and serum cortisol levels were measured at 2 and 8 am in the analyzed groups. Results: Cortisol levels did not differ between controls and OSA children. At 2 am, there were no differences between controls and OSA in TNF-α production, whereas at 8 am, TNF-α was reduced in MS-OSA. IL-1β production showed no differences between OSA and controls. Conclusions: In our population, only TNF-α production is suppressed in MS-OSA: this might indicate a role of OSA severity in inducing inflammation. In adults, the phenomenon is more pronounced due to the habitual greater severity/duration of OSA, presence of comorbidities (cardiovascular and metabolic), and different immune system function.
