The composition of rocky planets is strongly driven by the primordial materials in the protoplanetary disk, which can be inferred from the abundances of the host star. Understanding this compositional link is crucial for characterizing exoplanets. We aim to investigate the relationship between the compositions of low-mass planets and their host stars. We determined the primordial compositions of host stars using high-precision present-day stellar abundances and stellar evolutionary models. These primordial abundances were then input into a stoichiometric model to estimate the composition of planet-building blocks. Additionally, we employed a three-component planetary interior model (core, mantle, water in different phases) to estimate planetary compositions based only on their radius and mass. We found that although stellar abundances vary over time, relevant abundance ratios like Fe/Mg remain relatively constant during the main sequence evolution for low temperature stars. A strong correlation is found between the iron-to-silicate mass fraction of protoplanetary disks and planets, while no significant correlation was observed for water mass fractions. The Fe/Mg ratio varies significantly between planets and their stars, indicating substantial disk-driven compositional diversity, and this ratio also correlates with planetary radius. While stellar abundances, as a proxy of the composition of protoplanetary disk, provide a baseline for planetary composition, significant deviations arise due to complex disk processes, challenging the assumption of a direct, one-to-one elemental relationship between stars and their planets., Comment: Accepted by A&A

Stars mostly form in clusters where neighboring stars can influence proto-planetary disc evolution. Besides gravitational interactions, external photoevaporation can shape these discs. Depending on the strength of photoevaporation, discs can be destroyed within 1-2 Myrs or more gradually. We use the chemcomp code, incorporating a viscous disc evolution model with pebble drift and evaporation, to calculate the chemical composition of protoplanetary discs. This code is extended to include external photoevaporation based on the FRIED grid. Initially, the disc evolves purely viscously, with the inner disc's C/O ratio decreasing due to inward drifting and evaporating water ice pebbles. Over time, the C/O ratio increases as water vapor accretes onto the star and carbon-rich gas migrates inward. Once external photoevaporation starts, the outer disc disperses, but the inner disc's chemical evolution follows that of a purely viscous disc, as most pebbles have already drifted inward within 1 Myr. At low viscosity, the inner disc's C/O ratio remains sub-solar until dispersion by photoevaporation. At high viscosity, the C/O ratio can reach super-solar values, due to faster accretion of water vapor and inward migration of carbon-rich gas, provided the disc survives a few Myrs. In both cases, there is no significant difference in the inner disc's chemical composition compared to a purely viscous model due to the rapid inward drift of pebbles. In protoplanetary disks, small mm-cm-sized pebbles drift inwards which can aid planetary growth and influence the chemical composition of their natal disks. Gaps in protoplanetary disks can hinder the effective inward transport of pebbles by trapping the material in pressure bumps. Here we explore how multiple planets change the vapour enrichment by gap opening. For this, we extend the chemcomp code to include multiple growing planets and investigate the effect of 1, 2 & 3 planets on the water content and C/O ratio in the gas disk as well as the final composition of the planetary atmosphere. We follow planet migration over evaporation fronts and find that previously trapped pebbles evaporate relatively quickly and enrich the gas. We also find that in a multi-planet system, the atmosphere composition can be reduced in carbon and oxygen compared to the case without other planets, due to the blocking of volatile-rich pebbles by an outer planet. This effect is stronger for lower viscosities because planets migrate further at higher viscosities and eventually cross inner evaporation fronts, releasing the previously trapped pebbles. Interestingly, we find that nitrogen remains super-stellar regardless of the number of planets in the system such that super-stellar values in N/H of giant planet atmospheres may be a tracer for the importance of pebble drift and evaporation., Comment: 17 pages, 9 figures, 5 tables, accepted by A&A

The inferred dust masses from Class II protoplanetary disk observations are lower than or equal to the masses of the observed exoplanet systems. This poses the question of how planets form if their natal environments do not contain enough mass. This hypothesis has entered the literature as the "mass budget problem" of planet formation. We utilize numerical simulations of planet formation via pebble and gas accretion, including migration, in a viscously evolving protoplanetary disk, while tracing the time evolution of the dust mass. As expected, we find that the presence of a giant planet in the disk can influence the evolution of the disk itself and prevent rapid dust mass loss by trapping the dust outside its orbit. Early formation is crucial for giant planet formation, as we found in our previous work; therefore, our findings strengthen the hypothesis that planet formation has already occurred or is ongoing in Class II disks. Most importantly, we find that the optically thin dust mass significantly underestimates the total dust mass in the presence of a dust-trapping deep gap. We also show that the beam convolution would smear out the feature from a deep gap, especially if the planet forms in the inner disk. Of the many recently discovered terrestrial exoplanets, some are expected to harbor moderate water mass fractions of a few percent. The formation pathways that can produce planets with these water mass fractions are not fully understood. Here, we use the code chemcomp, which consists of a semi-analytical 1D protoplanetary disk model harboring a migrating and accreting planet, to model the growth and composition of planets with moderate water mass fractions by pebble accretion in a protoplanetary disk around a TRAPPIST-1 analog star. This star is accompanied by seven terrestrial planets, of which the outer four planets likely contain water mass fractions of between 1\% and 10\%. We adopt a published model that considers the evaporation of pebbles in the planetary envelope, from where recycling flows can transport the volatile vapor back into the disk. We find that with this model, the planetary water content depends on the influx rate of pebbles onto the planet. A decreasing pebble influx with time reduces the envelope temperature and consequently allows the formation of planets with moderate water mass fractions as inferred for the outer TRAPPIST-1 planets for a number of different simulation configurations. Improved observational technologies have enabled the resolution of substructures and the measurement of chemical abundances in discs. Understanding the chemical composition of the inner disc allows us to infer the building blocks available for planet formation. Recently, the depletion of water in the inner disc has been suggested to be linked to the presence of substructures, such as gaps and rings, further out. We investigate this hypothesis further by running 1D semi-analytical models of a disc with a gap to understand the combined effects of disc viscosity, gap depth, gap location, and gap formation timescales on the inner disc composition. Our results show that for a specific value of disc viscosity, the simulation outcome can be classified into three regimes: shallow gap, "traffic jam", and deep gap. While deep gaps may already be distinguishable with moderate-resolution techniques, it is still challenging to resolve shallow gaps with the current capabilities. On the other hand, discs with traffic jams have a higher chance of being resolved when observed with a high resolution, but they may appear as an intensity enhancement or even featureless when observed with moderate to low angular resolution. In this regard, information on the inner disc composition is useful because it can help to infer the existence of traffic jams or distinguish them from deep gaps: discs with deep gaps are expected to have a low water content and thus high C/O ratio in the inner disc due to the effective blocking of pebbles, while discs with shallow gaps would demonstrate the opposite trend. Furthermore, discs with a traffic jam would have a constant inward flux of water-rich pebbles resulting in a moderate water content and sub-stellar C/O ratios. PLATO (PLAnetary Transits and Oscillations of stars) is ESA's M3 mission designed to detect and characterise extrasolar planets and perform asteroseismic monitoring of a large number of stars. PLATO will detect small planets (down to <2 R_(Earth)) around bright stars (<11 mag), including terrestrial planets in the habitable zone of solar-like stars. With the complement of radial velocity observations from the ground, planets will be characterised for their radius, mass, and age with high accuracy (5 %, 10 %, 10 % for an Earth-Sun combination respectively). PLATO will provide us with a large-scale catalogue of well-characterised small planets up to intermediate orbital periods, relevant for a meaningful comparison to planet formation theories and to better understand planet evolution. It will make possible comparative exoplanetology to place our Solar System planets in a broader context. In parallel, PLATO will study (host) stars using asteroseismology, allowing us to determine the stellar properties with high accuracy, substantially enhancing our knowledge of stellar structure and evolution. The payload instrument consists of 26 cameras with 12cm aperture each. For at least four years, the mission will perform high-precision photometric measurements. Here we review the science objectives, present PLATO's target samples and fields, provide an overview of expected core science performance as well as a description of the instrument and the mission profile at the beginning of the serial production of the flight cameras. PLATO is scheduled for a launch date end 2026. This overview therefore provides a summary of the mission to the community in preparation of the upcoming operational phases.

We present a new high-order accurate computational fluid dynamics model based on the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations with a free surface for the accurate simulation of nonlinear and dispersive water waves in the time domain. The spatial discretization is based on Chebyshev polynomials in the vertical direction and a Fourier basis in the horizontal direction, allowing for the use of the fast Chebyshev and Fourier transforms for the efficient computation of spatial derivatives. The temporal discretization is done through a generalized low-storage explicit 4th order Runge-Kutta, and for the scheme to conserve mass and achieve high-order accuracy, a velocity-pressure coupling needs to be satisfied at all Runge-Kutta stages. This result in the emergence of a Poisson pressure problem that constitute a geometric conservation law for mass conservation. The occurring Poisson problem is proposed to be solved efficiently via an accelerated iterative solver based on a geometric $p$-multigrid scheme, which takes advantage of the high-order polynomial basis in the spatial discretization and hence distinguishes itself from conventional low-order numerical schemes. We present numerical experiments for validation of the scheme in the context of numerical wave tanks demonstrating that the $p$-multigrid accelerated numerical scheme can effectively solve the Poisson problem that constitute the computational bottleneck, that the model can achieve the desired spectral convergence, and is capable of simulating wave-propagation over non-flat bottoms with excellent agreement in comparison to experimental results., Comment: 29 pages, 25 figures, submitted to International Journal for Numerical Methods in Fluids

In a previous paper we showed that, like the migration speed, the eccentricity damping efficiency is modulated linearly by the depth of the partial gap a planet carves in the disk surface density profile, resulting in less efficient $e$-damping compared to the prescription commonly used in population synthesis works. Here, we extend our analysis to 3D, refining our $e$-damping formula and studying how the inclination damping efficiency is also affected. We perform high resolution 3D locally isothermal hydrodynamical simulations of planets with varying masses embedded in disks with varying aspect ratios and viscosities. We extract the gap profile and orbital damping timescales for fixed eccentricities and inclinations up to the disk scale height. The limit in gap depths below which vortices appear, in the low-viscosity case, happens roughly at the transition between classical type-I and type-II migration regimes. The orbital damping timescales can be described by two linear trends with a break around gap depths $\sim80\%$ and with slopes and intercepts depending on the eccentricity and inclination. These trends are understood on physical grounds and are reproduced by simple fitting formulas whose error is within the typically uncertainty of type-I torque formulas. Thus, our recipes for the gap depth and orbital damping efficiencies yield a simple description for planet-disk interactions to use in N-body codes in the case of partial gap opening planets that is consistent with high-resolution 3D hydro-simulations. Stellar chemical compositions can be altered by ingestion of planetary material and/or planet formation which removes refractory material from the proto-stellar disc. These "planet signatures" appear as correlations between elemental abundance differences and the dust condensation temperature. Detecting these planet signatures, however, is challenging due to unknown occurrence rates, small amplitudes, and heterogeneous star samples with large differences in stellar ages, and therefore stars born together (i.e., co-natal) with identical compositions can facilitate such detections. While previous spectroscopic studies were limited to small number of binary stars, the Gaia satellite provides new opportunities for detecting stellar chemical signatures of planets among co-moving pairs of stars confirmed to be co-natal. Here we report high-precision chemical abundances for a homogeneous sample of 91 co-natal pairs of stars with a well-defined selection function and identify at least seven new instances of planetary ingestion, corresponding to an occurrence rate of 8%. An independent Bayesian indicator is deployed, which can effectively disentangle the planet signatures from other factors, such as random abundance variation and atomic diffusion. Our study provides new evidence of planet signatures and facilitates a deeper understanding of the star-planet-chemistry connection by providing new observational constraints on the mechanisms of planet engulfment, formation and evolution., Comment: 29 pages, 11 figures. The chemical evolution of protoplanetary discs is not fully understood, several factors influence the final distribution of disc material. One such factor are inward drifting and evaporating pebbles that enrich the inner disc with vapour. In particular, it is first enriched with water vapour, resulting in a low C/O ratio, before carbon-rich gas from the outer disc is transported inwards elevating the C/O ratio again. However, it is unclear how internal photoevaporation, which carries away gas and opens gaps that block inward drifting pebbles, affects the chemical composition of the disc. We aim to study these effects in discs around solar-like stars, where we especially focus on the C/O ratio and the water content. The simulations are carried out using a semi-analytical 1D disc model. Our code chemcomp includes viscous evolution and heating, pebble growth and drift, pebble evaporation and condensation, and a simple chemical partitioning model. We show that internal photoevaporation plays a major role in the (chemical) evolution of protoplanetary discs: As it opens a gap, inward drifting pebbles are stopped and cannot contribute to the volatile content any more. In addition, gas from the outer disc is carried away by photoevaporative winds. Consequently, the C/O ratio in the inner disc is low. In contrast, gaps opened by giant planets allow the gas to pass, resulting in an elevated C/O ratio, similar to viscous discs without internal photoevaporation. This will enable us to distinguish observationally between these two scenarios when measuring the C/O ratio, implying that we can infer the cause of gap structures in disc observations. In the case of a photoevaporative disc, we additionally find an elevated water content in the inner disc as the water vapour and ice undergo a cycle of evaporation/re-condensation, preventing its inward accretion onto the star.

The exoplanet diversity has been linked to the disc environment in which they form, where the host star metallicity and the formation pathways play a crucial role. In the context of the core accretion paradigm, the initial stages of planet formation require the growth of dust material from micrometre size to planetesimal size bodies before core accretion can kick in. Although numerous studies have been conducted on planetesimal formation, it is still poorly understood how this process takes place in low metallicity stellar environments. We explore planetesimals formation in stellar environments primarily with low metallicity. We performed global 1D viscous disc evolution simulations including grain growth, evaporation and condensation of chemical species at ice lines. We followed the formation of planetesimals during disc evolution and tested different metallicities, disc sizes and turbulent viscosity strengths. We find that at solar and sub-solar metallicities, there is a significant enhancement in the midplane dust-to-gas mass ratios at the ice lines but this leads to planetesimal formation only at the water ice line. In our simulations, [Fe/H] = -0.6 is the lowest limit of metallicity for planetesimal formation where a few Earth masses of planetesimals could form. For such extreme disc environments, large discs are more conducive than small discs for forming large amounts of planetesimals at a fixed metallicity, because the pebble flux can be maintained for a longer time resulting in a longer and more efficient planetesimal formation phase. At lower metallicities, planetesimal formation is less supported in quiescent discs compared to turbulent discs, because the pebble flux can be maintained for a longer time. The amount of planetesimals formed at sub-solar metallicities in our simulations places a limit on core sizes that could possibly only result in the formation of super-Earths., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A

Future observations of exoplanets will hopefully reveal detailed constraints on planetary compositions. Recently, we have developed and introduced chemcomp (Schneider & Bitsch 2021a), which simulates the formation of planets in viscously evolving protoplanetary disks by the accretion of pebbles and gas. The chemical composition of planetary building blocks (pebbles and gas) is traced by including a physical approach of the evaporation and condensation of volatiles at evaporation lines. We have now open-sourced the chemcomp code to enable comparisons between planet formation models and observational constraints by the community. The chemical fingerprint of a planet reveals information about its formation history regarding when and where it formed. The water content of a planet can help to constrain its formation pathway: If the planet formed in the outer regions of the disk and migrated inward, it will be water-rich due to the accretion of water-ice-rich solids. Conversely, formation in the inner disk, where water-ice is not available, will result in a smaller atmospheric water content due to the limited accretion of water vapor. This process complicates with the presence of gap-opening giant planets. A gas giant exerts a pressure bump exterior to its orbit, preventing the further influx of pebbles into the inner system, resulting in a water-poor environment. The different formation scenarios can help to constrain the formation of the HAT-P-11 system, which contains an inner sub-Neptune with a mass of 23.4 $\mathrm{M_{\oplus}}$ and substellar water abundances ($X_\mathrm{H_2O} \approx 0.11$), as well as an outer giant planet orbiting exterior to the water-ice line. Our planet formation model encompasses planetary growth through pebble and gas accretion, along with a pebble drift and evaporation module that enables us to track the chemical composition of the disk and the planets. We find that the presence of the gas giant is necessary to block water-ice-rich material, resulting in a substellar water content for the inner sub-Neptune. If the giant planet forms too early, not enough solid material can enter the inner disk regions, preventing the efficient growth of the inner planet. This highlights the importance of the timing of giant planet formation to explain the inner system structure. Our simulations predict a roughly stellar C/O ratio with superstellar C/H and O/H for HAT-P-11b, providing constraints for future observations that are essential for gaining a more detailed understanding of its formation., Comment: 14 pages, accepted by A&A

The discovery of planets orbiting at less than 1 au from their host star and less massive than Saturn in various exoplanetary systems revolutionized our theories of planetary formation. The fundamental question is whether these close-in low-mass planets could have formed in the inner disk interior to 1 au, or whether they formed further out in the planet-forming disk and migrated inward. Exploring the role of additional giant planets in these systems may help us to pinpoint their global formation and evolution. We searched for additional substellar companions by using direct imaging in systems known to host close-in small planets. The use of direct imaging complemented by radial velocity and astrometric detection limits enabled us to explore the giant planet and brown dwarf demographics around these hosts to investigate the potential connection between both populations. We carried out a direct imaging survey with VLT/SPHERE to look for outer giant planets and brown dwarf companions in 27 systems hosting close-in low-mass planets discovered by radial velocity. Our sample is composed of very nearby (<20pc) planetary systems, orbiting G-, K-, and M-type mature (0.5-10Gyr) stellar hosts. We performed homogeneous direct imaging data reduction and analysis to search for and characterize point sources, and derived robust statistical detection limits. Of 337 point-source detections, we do not find any new bound companions. We recovered the emblematic very cool T-type brown dwarf GJ229B. Our typical sensitivities in direct imaging range from 5 to 30 MJup beyond 2 au. The non-detection of massive companions is consistent with predictions based on models of planet formation by core accretion. One of the current challenges of planet formation theory is to explain the enrichment of observed exoplanetary atmospheres. Past studies have focused on scenarios where either pebbles or planetesimals were the heavy element enrichment's drivers, we combine here both approaches to understand whether the composition of a planet can constrain its formation pathway. We study three different formation scenarios: pebble accretion, pebble accretion with planetesimal formation, combined pebble and planetesimal accretion. We use the chemcomp code to perform semi-analytical 1D simulations of protoplanetary discs, including viscous evolution, pebble drift, and simple chemistry to simulate the growth of planets from planetary embryos to gas giants as they migrate through the disc, while tracking their composition. Our simulations confirm that the composition of the planetary atmosphere is dominated by the accretion of gas enriched by inward drifting and evaporating pebbles. Including planetesimal formation hinders the enrichment, because the pebbles locked into planetesimals cannot evaporate and enrich the disc. This results in a big drop of the accreted heavy elements both in the planetesimal formation and accretion case, proving that planetesimal formation needs to be inefficient in order to explain planets with high heavy element content. Accretion of planetesimals enhances the refractory component of the atmosphere, leading to low volatile to refractory ratios, contrary to the pure pebble scenario. Such low volatile to refractory ratios can also be achieved by planets migrating in the inner disc in pure pebble scenario. Distinguishing these two scenarios requires knowledge about the planet's atmospheric C/H and O/H ratios, which are higher for pure pebble accretion. Planet formation is directly linked to the birthing environment that protoplanetary disks provide. The disk properties determine whether a giant planet will form and how it evolves. The number of exoplanet and disk observations is consistently rising, however, it is not yet possible to directly link these two populations. Therefore, a deep theoretical understanding of how planets form is crucial. We performed numerical simulations of planet formation via pebble and gas accretion, while including migration, in a viscously evolving protoplanetary disk, with dust growing, drifting, and evaporating at the ice lines. In our investigation of the most favorable conditions for giant planet formation, we find that these are high disk masses, early formation, and a large enough disk to host a long-lasting pebble flux. However, small disks with the same mass allow more efficient gas accretion onto planetary cores, leading to more massive gas giants. Given the right conditions, high viscosity leads to more massive cores and it enhances gas accretion. It also causes faster type II migration rates, so the giants have a decreasing final position for increasing viscosity. Intermediate dust fragmentation velocities provide the necessary pebble sizes and radial drift velocities for maximized pebble accretion and pebble flux. An enhanced dust-to-gas ratio can compensate for lower disk masses, but early formation is still crucial. We conclude that there is no specific initial parameter that leads to giant planet formation; rather, it is the outcome of a combination of complementary factors. This also implies that the diversity of the exoplanet systems is the product of the intrinsic diversity of the protoplanetary disks and it is crucial to take advantage of the increasing number and quality of observations to constrain the disk population properties and ultimately devise planet formation theories., Comment: Accepted by A&A, 15 pages, 6 figures

We conduct a line-by-line differential analysis of a sample of 125 co-moving pairs of stars (dwarfs and subgiants near solar metallicity). We obtain high precision stellar parameters with average uncertainties in effective temperature, surface gravity and metallicity of 16.5 K, 0.033 dex and 0.014 dex, respectively. We classify the co-moving pairs of stars into two groups, chemically homogeneous (conatal; |Delta[Fe/H]| $\le$ 0.04 dex) and inhomogeneous (non-conatal), and examine the fraction of chemically homogeneous pairs as a function of separation and effective temperature. The four main conclusions from this study are: (1) A spatial separation of \ds = 10$^6$ AU is an approximate boundary between homogeneous and inhomogeneous pairs of stars, and we restrict our conclusions to only consider the 91 pairs with \ds $\le$ 10$^6$ AU; (2) There is no trend between velocity separation and the fraction of chemically homogeneous pairs in the range \dv $\le$ 4 \kms; (3) We confirm that the fraction of chemically inhomogeneous pairs increases with increasing \teff\ and the trend matches a toy model of that expected from planet ingestion; (4) Atomic diffusion is not the main cause of the chemical inhomogeneity. A major outcome from this study is a sample of 56 bright co-moving pairs of stars with chemical abundance differences $\leq$ 0.02 dex (5\%) which is a level of chemical homogeneity comparable to that of the Hyades open cluster. Giant exoplanets seem to have on average a much larger heavy element content than the solar system giants. Past attempts to explain these heavy element contents include collisions between planets, accretion of volatile rich gas and accretion of gas enriched in micro-metre sized solids. However, these different theories individually could not explain the heavy element content of giants and the volatile to refractory ratios in atmospheres of giant planets at the same time. Here we combine the approaches of gas accretion enhanced with vapor and small micro-meter sized dust grains. As pebbles drift inwards, the volatile component evaporates and enriches the disc, while the smaller silicate core of the pebble continues to move inwards. The smaller silicate pebbles drift slower, leading to a pile-up of material interior to the water ice line, increasing the dust-to-gas ratio interior to the ice line. Under the assumption that these small dust grains follow the motion of the gas, gas accreting giants accrete large fractions of small solids in addition to the volatile vapor. The effectiveness of the solid enrichment requires a large disc radius to maintain the pebble flux for a long time and a large viscosity that reduces the size and inward drift of the small dust grains. However, this process depends crucially on the debated size difference of the pebbles interior and exterior of the water ice line. On the other hand, the volatile component released by the inward drifting pebbles can lead to a large enrichment with heavy element vapor, independently of a size difference of pebbles interior and exterior to the water ice line. Our model stresses the importance of the disc's radius and viscosity on the enrichment of dust and vapor. The origin of the elevated C/O ratios in discs around late M dwarfs compared to discs around solar-type stars is not well understood. Here we endeavour to reproduce the observed differences in the disc C/O ratios as a function of stellar mass using a viscosity-driven disc evolution model and study the corresponding atmospheric composition of planets that grow inside the water-ice line in these discs. We carried out simulations using a coupled disc evolution and planet formation code that includes pebble drift and evaporation. We used a chemical partitioning model for the dust composition in the disc midplane. Inside the water-ice line, the disc's C/O ratio initially decreases to sub-stellar due to the inward drift and evaporation of water-ice-rich pebbles before increasing again to super-stellar values due to the inward diffusion of carbon-rich vapour. We show that this process is more efficient for very low-mass stars compared to solar-type stars due to the closer-in ice lines and shorter disc viscous timescales. In high-viscosity discs, the transition from sub-stellar to super-stellar takes place faster due to the fast inward advection of carbon-rich gas. Our results suggest that planets accreting their atmospheres early (when the disc C/O is still sub-stellar) will have low atmospheric C/O ratios, while planets that accrete their atmospheres late (when the disc C/O has become super-stellar) can obtain high C/O ratios. Our model predictions are consistent with observations, under the assumption that all stars have the same metallicity and chemical composition, and that the vertical mixing timescales in the inner disc are much shorter than the radial advection timescales. Following the assumption that the disc substructures observed in protoplanetary discs originate from the interaction between the disc and the forming planets embedded therein, we aim to test if these putative planets could represent the progenitors of the currently observed giant exoplanets. We performed N-body simulations assuming initially three, four, five or seven planets. Our model includes pebble and gas accretion, migration, damping of eccentricities and inclinations, disc-planet interaction and disc evolution. We locate the planets in the positions where the gaps in protoplanetary discs have been observed and we evolve the systems for 100Myr including a few Myr of gas disc evolution, while also testing three values of $\alpha$ viscosity. For planetary systems with initially three and four planets we find that most of the growing planets lie beyond the RV detection limit of 5AU and only a small fraction of them migrate into the inner region. We also find that these systems have too low final eccentricities to be in agreement with the observed giant planet population. Systems initially consisting of five or seven planets become unstable after $\approx$40Kyr of integration time. This clearly shows that not every gap can host a planet. The general outcome of our simulations - too low eccentricities - is independent of the disc's viscosity and surface density. Further observations could either confirm the existence of an undetected population of wide-orbit giants or exclude the presence of such undetected population to constrain how many planets hide in gaps even further., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A

Millimeter sized dust grains experience radial velocities exceeding the gas velocities by orders of magnitude. The viscous evolution of the accretion disk adds disk material onto the central star's convective envelope, influencing its elemental abundances, [X/H]. At the same time, the envelope mass shrinks over time, amplifying the rate of abundance change. Therefore, the elemental abundances of the star are sensitive to disk processes that alter the composition and timing of disk accretion. We perform numerical 1D log-radial simulations integrating the disk advection-diffusion equation, accounting for phase transitions of chemical species at the evaporation fronts. They reveal a peak of refractory abundance within the first 2 Myr of $\Delta\mathrm{[X/H]}\sim 5\times 10^{-2}$ if grain growth is significant, but subsequent accretion diminishes previous refractory abundance increases for long-lived disks. Planet formation can reduce the abundance of dust species whose evaporation fronts lie within the planet's orbit by opening a gap and consequently blocking inward drifting pebbles. We expect the accretion of the Solar protoplanetary disk with Jupiter present to have changed the Sun's elemental abundances by ${\sim}10^{-2}$ throughout its lifetime. These considerations are also applied to the HD106515 wide binary system. We find that measurements of $\Delta\mathrm{[X/H]}$ are in reasonable agreement with results from simulations where the observed giant planet around HD106515 A is included and if HD106515B's disk formed planetesimals more efficiently. Simulations where the planet formed inside the water ice line are more favorable to agree with observations. Even though the general changes in the stellar abundances due to disk accretion are small, they are detectable at current sensitivities, indicating that the here presented methods can be used to constrain the planet formation pathway., Comment: 23 pages, 17 figures, 2 tables. Observations point to a correlation between outer giants and inner sub-Neptunes, unexplained by simulations so far. We utilize N-body simulations including pebble and gas accretion as well as planetary migration to investigate how the gas accretion rates influence the formation of systems of inner sub-Neptunes and outer gas giants as well as the eccentricity distribution of the outer giant planets. Less efficient envelope contraction rates allow a more efficient formation of systems with inner sub-Neptunes and outer giants. This is caused by the fact that the cores formed in the inner disc are too small to accrete large envelopes and only cores growing in the outer disc can become giants. As a result, instabilities between the outer giant planets do not necessarily destroy the inner systems of sub-Neptunes unlike simulations where giant planets can form closer in. Our simulations show that up to 50% of the systems of cold Jupiters could have inner sub-Neptunes, in agreement with observations. Our simulations show a good agreement with the eccentricity distribution of giants, even though we find a slight mismatch to the mass and semi-major axes distributions. Synthetic transit observations of the inner systems (r<0.7 AU) reveal an excellent match to the Kepler observations, where our simulations match the period ratios of adjacent planet pairs. Thus, the breaking the chains model for super-Earth and sub-Neptune formation remains consistent with observations even when outer giant planets are present. However, simulations with outer giant planets produce more systems with mostly only one inner planet and with larger eccentricities, in contrast to simulations without outer giants. Super-Mercuries, rocky exoplanets with bulk iron mass fraction of more than 60 per cent, appear to be preferentially hosted by stars with higher iron mass fraction than the Earth. It is unclear whether these iron-rich planets can form in the disc, or if giant impacts are necessary. Here we investigate the formation of super-Mercuries in their natal protoplanetary discs by taking into account their host stars' abundances (Fe, Mg, Si, S). We employ a disc evolution model which includes the growth, drift, evaporation and recondensation of pebbles to compute the pebble iron mass fraction. The recondensation of outward-drifting iron vapour near the iron evaporation front is the key mechanism that facilitates an increase in the pebble iron mass fraction. We also simulate the growth of planetary seeds around the iron evaporation front using a planet formation model which includes pebble accretion and planet migration, and compute the final composition of the planets. Our simulations are able to reproduce the observed iron compositions of the super-Mercuries provided that all the iron in the disc are locked in pure Fe grains and that the disc viscosity is low. The combined effects of slow orbital migration of planets and long retention time of iron vapour in low-viscosity discs makes it easier to form iron-rich planets. Furthermore, we find that decreasing the stellar Mg/Si ratio results in an increase in the iron mass fraction of the planet due to a reduction in the abundance of Mg2SiO4, which has a very similar condensation temperature as iron, in the disc. The spin-orbit obliquity of a planetary system constraints its formation history. A large obliquity may either indicate a primordial misalignment between the star and its gaseous disk or reflect the effect of different mechanisms tilting planetary systems after formation. Observations and statistical analysis suggest that system of planets with sizes between 1 and 4 R$_{\oplus}$ have a wide range of obliquities ($\sim0-30^{\circ}$), and that single- and multi-planet transiting have statistically indistinguishable obliquity distributions. Here, we revisit the ``breaking the chains'' formation model with focus in understanding the origin of spin-orbit obliquities. This model suggests that super-Earths and mini-Neptunes migrate close to their host stars via planet-disk gravitational interactions, forming chain of planets locked in mean-motion resonances. After gas-disk dispersal, about 90-99\% of these planetary systems experience dynamical instabilities, which spread the systems out. Using synthetic transit observations, we show that if planets are born in disks where the disk angular momentum is virtually aligned with the star's rotation spin, their final obliquity distributions peak at about $\sim$5 degrees or less, and the obliquity distributions of single and multi-planet transiting systems are statistically distinct. By treating the star-disk alignment as a free-parameter, we show that the obliquity distributions of single and multi-planet transiting systems only become statistically indistinguishable if planets are assumed to form in primordially misaligned natal disks with a ``tilt'' distribution peaking at $\gtrsim$10-20 deg. Context. Our Galaxy is composed of different stellar populations with varying chemical abundances, which are thought to imprint the composition of planet building blocks (PBBs). As such, the properties of stars should affect the properties of planets and small bodies formed in their systems. In this context, high-resolution spectroscopic surveys open a window into the chemical links between and their host stars. Aims. We aim to determine the PBB composition trends for various stellar populations across the Galaxy by comparing the two large spectroscopic surveys APOGEE and GALAH. We assess the reliability of the PBB composition as determined with these surveys with a propagation error study. Methods. Stellar spectroscopic abundances from the large surveys GALAH-DR3 and APOGEE-DR17 were used as input with a stoichiometric condensation model. We classified stars into different Galactic components and we quantified the PBB composition trends as a function of [Fe/H]. We also analysed the distribution composition patterns in the [$\alpha$/Fe]-[Fe/H] diagram. Results. Our propagation error study suggests that the overall trends with [Fe/H] and [$\alpha$/Fe] are robust, which is supported by the double study of both APOGEE and GALAH. We therefore confirm the existence of a bimodal PBB composition separating the thin disc stars from the thick disc stars. Furthermore, we confirm that the stoichiometric water PBB content is anti-correlated with [Fe/H]. Conclusions. Our results imply that metal-poor stars both in the thin and thick disks are suitable hosts for water-rich PBBs and for ice-rich small bodies. However, for metal-poor stars ([Fe/H]<0), the PBBs around thick disc stars should have a higher water content than that around thin disc stars because of the $\alpha$-contentdependence of the water mass fraction.

It is known that gap opening depends on the disc's viscosity; however, eccentricity damping formulas have only been derived at high viscosities, ignoring partial gap opening. We aim at obtaining a simple formula to model $e$-damping of the type-I regime in low viscosity discs, where even small planets may start opening partial. We perform high resolution 2D locally isothermal hydrodynamical simulations of planets with varying masses on fixed orbits in discs with varying aspect ratios and viscosities. We determine the torque and power felt by the planet to derive migration and eccentricity damping timescales. We first find a lower limit to the gap depths below which vortices appear; this happens roughly at the transition between type-I and type-II regimes. For the simulations that remain stable, we obtain a fit to the observed gap depth in the limit of vanishing eccentricities that is similar to the one currently used in the literature but is accurate down to $\alpha=3.16\times 10^{-5}$. We record the $e$-damping efficiency as a function of the observed gap depth and $e$: when the planet has opened a deep enough gap, a linear trend is observed independently of $e$; at shallower gaps this linear trend is preserved at low $e$, while it deviates to more efficient damping when $e$ is comparable to the disc's scale height. Both trends can be understood on theoretical grounds and are reproduced by a simple fitting formula. Our combined fits yield a simple recipe to implement type-I $e$-damping in $N$-body for partial gap opening planets that is consistent with high-resolution 2D hydro-simulations. The typical error of the fit is of the order of a few percent, and lower than the error of type-I torque formulas widely used in the literature. This will allow a more self-consistent treatment of planet-disc interactions of the type-I regime for population synthesis models at low viscosities., Comment: Submitted to A&A

Several planetary systems are known to host multiple giant planets. However, when two giant planets are accreting from the same disk, it is unclear what effect the presence of the second planet has on the gas accretion process of both planets. In this paper we perform long-term 2D isothermal hydrodynamical simulations (over more than 0.5 Myrs) with the FARGO-2D1D code, considering two non-migrating planets accreting from the same gaseous disk. We find that the evolution of the planets' mass ratio depends on gap formation. However, in all cases, when the planets start accreting at the same time, they end up with very similar masses (0.9 $

The size frequency distribution of exoplanet radii between 1 and 4$R_{\oplus}$ is bimodal with peaks at $\sim$1.4 $R_{\oplus}$ and $\sim$2.4 $R_{\oplus}$, and a valley at $\sim$1.8$R_{\oplus}$. This radius valley separates two classes of planets -- usually referred to as "super-Earths" and "mini-Neptunes" -- and its origin remains debated. One model proposes that super-Earths are the outcome of photo-evaporation or core-powered mass-loss stripping the primordial atmospheres of the mini-Neptunes. A contrasting model interprets the radius valley as a dichotomy in the bulk compositions, where super-Earths are rocky planets and mini-Neptunes are water-ice rich worlds. In this work, we test whether the migration model is consistent with the radius valley and how it distinguishes these views. In the migration model, planets migrate towards the disk inner edge forming a chain of planets locked in resonant configurations. After the gas disk dispersal, orbital instabilities "break the chains" and promote late collisions. This model broadly matches the period-ratio and planet-multiplicity distributions of Kepler planets, and accounts for resonant chains such as TRAPPIST-1, Kepler-223, and TOI-178. Here, by combining the outcome of planet formation simulations with compositional mass-radius relationships, and assuming complete loss of primordial H-rich atmospheres in late giant-impacts, we show that the migration model accounts for the exoplanet radius valley and the intra-system uniformity ("peas-in-a-pod") of Kepler planets. Our results suggest that planets with sizes of $\sim$1.4 $R_{\oplus}$ are mostly rocky, whereas those with sizes of $\sim$2.4 $R_{\oplus}$ are mostly water-ice rich worlds. Atmospheric abundances are thought to constrain the planet formation pathway, because different species evaporate at different temperatures leaving distinct signatures in the accreted atmosphere. The planetary C/O ratio is thought to constrain the planet formation pathway, because of the condensation sequence of H$_2$O, CO$_2$, CH$_4$, and CO, resulting in an increase of the gas phase C/O ratio with increasing distance. Here we use a disc evolution model including pebble growth, drift and evaporation coupled with a planet formation model that includes pebble and gas accretion as well as planet migration to compute the atmospheric compositions of giant planets. We compare our results to the recent observations of the hot Jupiters WASP-77A b and $\tau$ Bo\"otis b, which feature sub-solar and super-solar C/H and O/H values, respectively. Our simulations reproduce these measurements and show that giants like WASP-77A b should start to form beyond the CO$_2$ evaporation front, while giants like $\tau$ Bo\"otis b should originate from beyond the H$_2$O line. Our model allows the formation of sub- and super-solar atmospheric compositions. However simulations without pebble evaporation can not reproduce the super-solar C/H and O/H ratios of $\tau$ Bo\"otis b's atmosphere without additional accretion of solids. We identify the $\alpha$ viscosity parameter of the disc as a key ingredient, because the viscosity drives the inward motion of volatile enriched vapor, responsible for the accretion of gaseous C and O. Depending on the planet's migration history order-of-magnitude differences in atmospheric C/H and O/H are expected. Our simulations also predict super-solar N/H for $\tau$ Bo\"otis b and solar N/H for WASP-77A b. We conclude that pebble evaporation is a key ingredient to explain the variety of exoplanet atmospheres, because it can explain both, sub- and super-solar atmospheric abundances., Comment: Accepted by A&A, 7 pages, 4 figures

Based on recently-taken and archival HARPS, FEROS and HIRES radial velocities (RVs), we present evidence for a new planet orbiting the first ascent red giant star HD33142 (with an improved mass estimate of 1.52$\pm$0.03 M$_\odot$), already known to host two planets. We confirm the Jovian mass planets HD33142 b and c with periods of $P_{\rm b}$ = 330.0$_{-0.4}^{+0.4}$ d and $P_{\rm c}$ = 810.2$_{-4.2}^{+3.8}$ d and minimum dynamical masses of $m_{\rm b}\sin{i}$ = 1.26$_{-0.05}^{+0.05}$ M$_{\rm Jup}$ and $m_{\rm c}\sin{i}$ = 0.89$_{-0.05}^{+0.06}$ M$_{\rm Jup}$. Furthermore, our periodogram analysis of the precise RVs shows strong evidence for a short-period Doppler signal in the residuals of a two-planet Keplerian fit, which we interpret as a third, Saturn-mass planet with $m_\mathrm{d}\sin{i}$ = 0.20$_{-0.03}^{+0.02}$ M$_{\rm Jup}$ on a close-in orbit with an orbital period of $P_{\rm d}$ =89.9$_{-0.1}^{+0.1}$ d. We study the dynamical behavior of the three-planet system configurations with an N-body integration scheme, finding it long-term stable with the planets alternating between low and moderate eccentricities episodes. We also performed N-body simulations, including stellar evolution and second-order dynamical effects such as planet-stellar tides and stellar mass-loss on the way to the white dwarf phase. We find that planets HD33142 b, c and d are likely to be engulfed near the tip of the red giant branch phase due to tidal migration. These results make the HD33142 system an essential benchmark for the planet population statistics of the multiple-planet systems found around evolved stars., Comment: Accepted for publication in AJ

Constraining planet formation based on the atmospheric composition of exoplanets is a fundamental goal of the exoplanet community. Existing studies commonly try to constrain atmospheric abundances, or to analyze what abundance patterns a given description of planet formation predicts. However, there is also a pressing need to develop methodologies that investigate how to transform atmospheric compositions into planetary formation inferences. In this study we summarize the complexities and uncertainties of state-of-the-art planet formation models and how they influence planetary atmospheric compositions. We introduce a methodology that explores the effect of different formation model assumptions when interpreting atmospheric compositions. We apply this framework to the directly imaged planet HR 8799e. Based on its atmospheric composition, this planet may have migrated significantly during its formation. We show that including the chemical evolution of the protoplanetary disk leads to a reduced need for migration. Moreover, we find that pebble accretion can reproduce the planet's composition, but some of our tested setups lead to too low atmospheric metallicities, even when considering that evaporating pebbles may enrich the disk gas. The presence of forming planets embedded in their protoplanetary disks has been inferred from the detection of multiring structures in such disks. Most of these suspected planets are undetectable by direct imaging observations at current measurement sensitivities. Inward migration and accretion might make these putative planets accessible to the Doppler method, but the actual extent of growth and orbital evolution remains unconstrained. Under the premise that the gaps in the disk around HD 163296 originate from new-born planets, we investigate if and under which circumstances the gap-opening planets could represent progenitors of the exoplanet population detected around A-type stars. In particular, we study the dependence of final planetary masses and orbital parameters on the viscosity of the disk. The evolution of the embedded planets was simulated throughout the disk lifetime and up to 100 Myr after the dispersal of the disk, taking the evolving disk structure and a likely range of disk lifetimes into account. We find that the final configuration of the planets is largely determined by the $\alpha$ viscosity parameter of the disk and less dependent on the choice for the disk lifetime and the initial planetary parameters. If we assume that planets such as those in HD 163296 evolve to form the observed exoplanet population of A-type stars, a $\alpha$ parameter on the order of $3.16 \times 10^{-4} \lesssim \alpha \lesssim 10^{-3}$ is required for the disks to induce sufficiently high migration rates. Depending on whether or not future direct imaging surveys will uncover a larger number of planets with $m_\mathrm{pl} \lesssim 3 M_\mathrm{Jup}$ and $a_\mathrm{pl} \gtrsim 10 \mathrm{AU}$ we expect the $\alpha$ parameter to be at the lower or upper end of this range, always under the assumption that such disks indeed harbor wide orbit planets., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysics, 13 pages, 7 figures

We find a combinatorial formula which computes the first cotangent cohomology module of Stanley-Reisner rings associated to matroids. For arbitrary simplicial complexes we provide upper bounds for the dimensions of the multigraded components of T^1. For specific degrees we prove that these bounds are reached if and only if the simplicial complex is a matroid, obtaining thus a new characterization for matroids. Our understanding of planet formation has been rapidly evolving in recent years. The classical planet formation theory, developed when the only known planetary system was our own Solar System, has been revised to account for the observed diversity of the exoplanetary systems. At the same time, the increasing observational capabilities of the young stars and their surrounding disks bring new constraints on the planet formation process. In this chapter, we summarize the new information derived from the exoplanets population and the circumstellar disks observations. We present the new developments in planet formation theory, from dust evolution to the growth of planetary cores by accretion of planetesimals, pebbles, and gas. We review the state-of-the-art models for the formation of diverse planetary systems, including the population synthesis approach which is necessary to compare theoretical model outcomes to the exoplanet population. We emphasize that the planet formation process may not be spatially uniform in the disk and there are preferential locations for the formation of planetesimals and planets. Outside of these locations, a significant fraction of solids is not growing past the pebble-sizes. The reservoir of pebbles plays an important role in the growth of planetary cores in the pebble accretion process. The timescale of the emergence of massive planetary cores is an important aspect of the present models and it is likely that the cores within one disk form at different times. The inflated radii of giant short-period extrasolar planets collectively indicate that the interiors of hot Jupiters are heated by some anomalous energy dissipation mechanism. Although a variety of physical processes have been proposed to explain this heating, recent statistical evidence points to the confirmation of explicit predictions of the Ohmic dissipation theory, elevating this mechanism as the most promising candidate for resolving the radius inflation problem. In this work, we present an analytic model for the dissipation rate and derive a simple scaling law that links the magnitude of energy dissipation to the thickness of the atmospheric weather layer. From this relation, we find that the penetration depth influences the Ohmic dissipation rate by an order of magnitude. We further investigate the weather layer depth of hot Jupiters from the extent of their inflation and show that, depending on the magnetic field strength, hot Jupiter radii can be maintained even if the circulation layer is relatively shallow. Additionally, we explore the evolution of zonal wind velocities with equilibrium temperature by matching our analytic model to statistically expected dissipation rates. From this analysis, we deduce that the wind speed scales approximately as $1/\sqrt{T_\mathrm{eq}-T_0}$, where $T_0$ is a constant that equals $T_0 \sim 1000~\mathrm{K}-1800~\mathrm{K}$ depending on planet-specific parameters (radius, mass, etc.). New ALMA observations of protoplanetary disks allow us to probe planet formation in other systems, giving us new constraints on planet formation processes. Meanwhile, studies of our own Solar System rely on constraints derived in a completely different way. However, it is still unclear what features the Solar System's disk could have produced during its gas phase. By running 2D isothermal hydro-simulations and a dust evolution model, we derive synthetic images at 1.3 mm wavelength using the radiative transfer code RADMC3D. We find that the embedded multiple giant planets strongly perturb the radial gas velocities of the disk, creating traffic jams in the dust. They produce over-densities different from the ones created by pressure traps and located away from the planets' positions in the disk. By deriving the images at 1.3mm from these dust distributions, we show that the traffic jams, observable with a high resolution, further blur the link between the number of gaps and rings in disks and the number of embedded planets. We additionally show that a system of 3 compact giant planets does not automatically produce bright outer rings at large radii in the disk. This means that high resolution observations of disks of various sizes are needed to distinguish between different giant planet formation scenarios during the disk phase, where the giants form either in the outer regions of the disks or in the inner regions. Finally, we find that, even when the dust temperature is determined self-consistently, the dust masses derived observationally might be off by up to a factor of ten compared to the dust contained in our simulations due to the creation of optically thick regions. Astronomical observations reveal that protoplanetary disks around young stars commonly have ring- and gap-like structures in their dust distributions. These features are associated with pressure bumps trapping dust particles at specific locations, which simulations show are ideal sites for planetesimal formation. Here we show that our Solar System may have formed from rings of planetesimals -- created by pressure bumps -- rather than a continuous disk. We model the gaseous disk phase assuming the existence of pressure bumps near the silicate sublimation line (at $T \sim$1400~K), water snowline (at $T \sim$170~K), and CO-snowline (at $T \sim$30~K). Our simulations show that dust piles up at the bumps and forms up to three rings of planetesimals: a narrow ring near 1~au, a wide ring between $\sim$3-4~au and $\sim$10-20~au, and a distant ring between $\sim$20~au and $\sim$45~au. We use a series of simulations to follow the evolution of the innermost ring and show how it can explain the orbital structure of the inner Solar System and provides a framework to explain the origins of isotopic signatures of Earth, Mars and different classes of meteorites. The central ring contains enough mass to explain the rapid growth of the giant planets' cores. Because of their common origin, it was assumed that the composition of planet building blocks should, to a first order, correlate with stellar atmospheric composition, especially for refractory elements. In fact, information on the relative abundance of refractory and major rock-forming elements such as Fe, Mg, Si has been commonly used to improve interior estimates for terrestrial planets. Recently Adibekyan et al. (2021) presented evidence of a tight chemical link between rocky planets and their host stars. In this study we add six recently discovered exoplanets to the sample of Adibekyan et al and re-evaluate their findings in light of these new data. We confirm that i) iron-mass fraction of rocky exoplanets correlates (but not a 1:1 relationship) with the composition of their host stars, ii) on average the iron-mass fraction of planets is higher than that of the primordial iron-mass fraction of the protoplanetary disk, iii) super-Mercuries are formed in disks with high iron content. We investigate the pebble isolation mass for a planet on a fixed eccentric orbit in its protoplanetary disc by conducting a set of 2D hydrodynamical simulations including dust turbulent diffusion. A range of planet eccentricities up to $e=0.2$ is adopted. Our simulations also cover a range of $\alpha-$turbulent viscosities, and for each pair $\{\alpha,e\}$ the pebble isolation mass is estimated as the minimum planet mass in our simulations such that solids with a Stokes number $\gtrsim 0.05$ do not flow across the planet orbit and remain trapped around a pressure bump outside the planet gap. For $\alpha<10^{-3}$, we find that eccentric planets reach a well-defined pebble isolation mass, which can be smaller than for planets on circular orbits when the eccentricity remains smaller than the disc's aspect ratio. We provide a fitting formula for how the pebble isolation mass depends on planet eccentricity. However, for $\alpha > 10^{-3}$, eccentric planets cannot fully stall the pebbles flow, and thus do not reach a well-defined pebble isolation mass. Our results suggest that the maximum mass reached by rocky cores should exhibit a dichotomy depending on the disc turbulent viscosity. While being limited to ${\cal O}(10\,M_\oplus)$ in low-viscosity discs, this maximum mass could reach much larger values in discs with a high turbulent viscosity in the planet vicinity. Our results further highlight that pebble filtering by growing planets might not be as effective as previously thought, especially in high-viscosity discs, with important implications to protoplanetary discs observations., Comment: 9 pages, 7 figures. Planets between 1-4 Earth radii with orbital periods <100 days are strikingly common. The migration model proposes that super-Earths migrate inwards and pile up at the disk inner edge in chains of mean motion resonances. After gas disk dispersal, simulations show that super-Earth's gravitational interactions can naturally break their resonant configuration leading to a late phase of giant impacts. The instability phase is key to matching the orbital spacing of observed systems. Yet, most previous simulations have modelled collisions as perfect accretion events, ignoring fragmentation. In this work, we investigate the impact of imperfect accretion on the breaking the chains scenario. We performed N-body simulations starting from distributions of planetary embryos and modelling the effects of pebble accretion and migration in the gas disk. Our simulations also follow the long-term dynamical evolution of super-Earths after the gas disk dissipation. We compared the results of simulations where collisions are treated as perfect merging events with those where imperfect accretion and fragmentation are allowed. We concluded that the perfect accretion is a suitable approximation in this regime, from a dynamical point of view. Although fragmentation events are common, only ~10% of the system mass is fragmented during a typical "late instability phase", with fragments being mostly reacreted by surviving planets. This limited total mass in fragments proved to be insufficient to alter qualitatively the final system dynamical configuration -- e.g. promote strong dynamical friction or residual migration -- compared to simulations where fragmentation is neglected., Comment: 13 pages, 8 figures and 1 table.
