Search

Compliant walls are widespread in biological and engineering systems. Because of their singular nature, adapted tools are required to accurately study their rheological properties as well as the consequences of the latter within a given mechanical setting. Because of their slender nature, membranes can be considered as prototypical examples of highly compliant boundaries. In this study, we describe a modified Surface Forces Apparatus (SFA) developed to measure the forces acting on a compliant membrane by measuring its deformation field. We discuss how such a device can be used to characterize the rheology of suspended membranes and accurately measure the electrostatic interactions between a polarized membrane and a spherical electrode, without the need of an external measurement spring.

The neutron star low-mass X-ray binary, EXO 0748--676, recently returned to outburst after a $\sim$ 16 year-long quiescence. Since its return, there has been a global effort to capture the previously unseen rise of the source and to understand its somewhat early return to outburst, as it is typical for a source to spend longer in quiescence than in outburst. Here, we report on the simultaneous optical and X-ray detection of a type I X-ray burst, captured by XMM-Newton during a DDT observation on 30th June 2024. The data show 3 X-ray eclipses consistent with the known ephemeris and one type I X-ray burst at 60492.309 MJD. The X-ray burst is reprocessed into the optical band and captured by XMM-Newton's Optical Monitor during a 4399 s exposure with the B filter in image + fast mode. We determine that the optical peak lags the X-ray peak by 4.46 $\pm$ 1.71s. The optical and X-ray rise times are similar, but the optical decay timescale is shorter than the X-ray decay timescale. The reprocessing site is likely within a few light seconds of the X-ray emitting region, so the companion star, accretion disc and ablated material are all plausible., Comment: 6 Pages, 3 Figures, Accepted for Publication in MNRAS Letters

We present mid-infrared (MIR) spectral-timing measurements of the prototypical Galactic microquasar GRS 1915+105. The source was observed with the Mid-Infrared Instrument (MIRI) onboard JWST in June 2023 at a MIR luminosity L(MIR)~10^{36} erg/s exceeding past IR levels by about a factor of 10. By contrast, the X-ray flux is much fainter than the historical average, in the source's now-persistent 'obscured' state. The MIRI low-resolution spectrum shows a plethora of emission lines, the strongest of which are consistent with recombination in the hydrogen Pfund (Pf) series and higher. Low amplitude (~1%) but highly significant peak-to-peak photometric variability is found on timescales of ~1,000 s. The brightest Pf(6-5) emission line lags the continuum. Though difficult to constrain accurately, this lag is commensurate with light-travel timescales across the outer accretion disc or with expected recombination timescales inferred from emission line diagnostics. Using the emission line as a bolometric indicator suggests a moderate (~5-30% Eddington) intrinsic accretion rate. Multiwavelength monitoring shows that JWST caught the source close in-time to unprecedentedly bright MIR and radio long-term flaring. Assuming a thermal bremsstrahlung origin for the MIRI continuum suggests an unsustainably high mass-loss rate during this time unless the wind remains bound, though other possible origins cannot be ruled out. PAH features previously detected with Spitzer are now less clear in the MIRI data, arguing for possible destruction of dust in the interim. We present the discovery, with the Neutron Star Interior Composition Explorer (NICER), that SRGA J144459.2-604207 is a 447.9 Hz accreting millisecond X-ray pulsar (AMXP), which underwent a four-week long outburst starting on 2024 February 15. The AMXP resides in a 5.22 hr binary, orbiting a low-mass companion donor with $M_d>0.1M_\odot$. We report on the temporal and spectral properties from NICER observations during the early days of the outburst, from 2024 February 21 through 2024 February 23, during which NICER also detected a type-I X-ray burst that exhibited a plateau lasting ~6 s. The spectra of the persistent emission were well described by an absorbed thermal blackbody and power-law model, with blackbody temperature $kT\approx0.9{\rm\,keV}$ and power-law photon index $\Gamma\approx1.9$. Time-resolved burst spectroscopy confirmed the thermonuclear nature of the burst, where an additional blackbody component reached a maximum temperature of nearly $kT\approx3{\rm\,keV}$ at the peak of the burst. Continuous quantum phase transitions are widely assumed and frequently observed in various systems of quantum particles or spins. Their characteristic trait involves scaling laws governing a second-order, gradual suppression of the order parameter as the quantum critical point is approached. The localization of Cooper pairs in disordered superconductors and the resulting breakdown of superconductivity have long stood as a prototypical example. Here, we show a departure from this paradigm, showcasing that amorphous superconducting films of indium oxide undergo a distinctive, discontinuous first-order quantum phase transition tuned by disorder. Through systematic measurements of the plasmon spectrum in superconducting microwave resonators, we provide evidence for a marked jump of both the zero-temperature superfluid stiffness and the transition temperature at the critical disorder. This discontinuous transition sheds light on the previously overlooked role of repulsive interactions between Cooper pairs and the subsequent competition between superconductivity and insulating Cooper-pair glass. Furthermore, our investigation shows that the critical temperature of the films no longer relates to the pairing amplitude but aligns with the superfluid stiffness, consistent with the pseudogap regime of preformed Cooper pairs. We review recent studies of a colloidal information engine that consists of a bead in water and held by an optical trap. The bead is ratcheted upward without any apparent external work, by taking advantage of favorable thermal fluctuations. Much of the previous work on such engines aimed to show that accounting for information-processing costs can reconcile the observed motion with the second law of thermodynamics. By contrast, we focus on the factors that limit the performance of such engines by optimizing variously the upward velocity, rate of gravitational free-energy extraction, or ability to track a trajectory. We then consider measurement noise, which degrades engine performance. A naive use of noisy measurements in the feedback algorithm leads to a phase transition at finite signal-to-noise ratio: below the transition, the engine no longer functions. A more sophisticated, `Bayesian' algorithm eliminates the phase transition and improves performance. Finally, operating the information engine in a nonequilibrium environment with extra force fluctuations can enhance the performance by orders of magnitude, even to the point where the energy extracted exceeds that needed to run the information processing. Encoding quantum information in quantum states with disjoint wave-function support and noise insensitive energies is the key behind the idea of qubit protection. While fully protected qubits are expected to offer exponential protection against both energy relaxation and pure dephasing, simpler circuits may grant partial protection with currently achievable parameters. Here, we study a fluxonium circuit in which the wave-functions are engineered to minimize their overlap while benefiting from a first-order-insensitive flux sweet spot. Taking advantage of a large superinductance ($L\sim 1~\mu \rm{H}$), our circuit incorporates a resonant tunneling mechanism at zero external flux that couples states with the same fluxon parity, thus enabling bifluxon tunneling. The states $|0\rangle$ and $|1\rangle$ are encoded in wave-functions with parities 0 and 1, respectively, ensuring a minimal form of protection against relaxation. Two-tone spectroscopy reveals the energy level structure of the circuit and the presence of $4 \pi$ quantum-phase slips between different potential wells corresponding to $m=\pm 1$ fluxons, which can be precisely described by a simple fluxonium Hamiltonian or by an effective bifluxon Hamiltonian. Despite suboptimal fabrication, the measured relaxation ($T_1 = 177\pm 3 ~\mu s$) and dephasing ($T_2^E = 75\pm 5~\mu \rm{s}$) times not only demonstrate the relevance of our approach but also opens an alternative direction towards quantum computing using partially-protected fluxonium qubits., Comment: 14 pages, 12 figures

We present two simultaneous NICER and NuSTAR observations of the ultra-compact X-ray binary (UCXB) candidate SLX 1735-269 while the source was in two different spectral states. Using various reflection modeling techniques, we find that xillverCO, a model used for fitting X-ray spectra of UCXBs with high carbon and oxygen abundances is an improvement over relxill or relxillns, which instead contains solar-like chemical abundances. This provides indirect evidence in support of the source being ultra-compact. We also use this reflection model to get a preliminary measurement of the inclination of the system, $i = 57^{+23}_{-7}$ degrees. This is consistent with our timing analysis, where a lack of eclipses indicates an inclination of $i<80^{\circ}$. Efficient and broadband forward-scattering is a property of prime importance for meta-atoms if they are to be used in self-assembled metasurfaces. Strong contenders include colloidal nanoresonators with tailored multipolar content to achieve the proper interferences that suppress back-scattering. We consider dense plasmonic balls composed of more than a hundred silver nanoinclusions. Numerical simulations provide a full understanding of the role played by multipole moments in the scattering behavior. They are fabricated using emulsion drying and characterized optically. Strong and efficient forward-scattering is demonstrated over the entire visible range. Electric and magnetic dipole resonances of equal amplitude and phase are evidenced. In X-ray observations of hard state black hole X-ray binaries, rapid variations in accretion disc and coronal power-law emission are correlated and show Fourier-frequency-dependent time lags. On short (~0.1 s) time-scales, these lags are thought to be due to reverberation and therefore may depend strongly on the geometry of the corona. Low-frequency quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) are variations in X-ray flux that have been suggested to arise because of geometric changes in the corona, possibly due to General Relativistic Lense-Thirring precession. Therefore one might expect the short-term time lags to vary on the QPO time-scale. We performed novel spectral-timing analyses on NICER observations of the black hole X-ray binary MAXI J1820+070 during the hard state of its outburst in 2018 to investigate how the short-term time lags between a disc-dominated and a coronal power-law-dominated energy band vary on different time-scales. Our method can distinguish between variability due to the QPO and broadband noise, and we find a linear correlation between the power-law flux and lag amplitude that is strongest at the QPO frequency. We also introduce a new method to resolve the QPO signal and determine the QPO-phase-dependence of the flux and lag variations, finding that both are very similar. The evolution of accreting X-ray binary systems is closely coupled to the properties of their donor stars. As a result, we can constrain the evolutionary track a system is by establishing the nature of its donor. Here, we present far-UV spectroscopy of the transient neutron-star low-mass X-ray binary Swift J1858 in three different accretion states (low-hard, high-hard and soft). All of these spectra exhibit anomalous N\,{\sc v}, C\,{\sc iv}, Si\,{\sc iv} and He\,{\sc ii} lines, suggesting that its donor star has undergone CNO processing. We also determine the donor's effective temperature, $T_{d} \simeq 5700$~K, and radius, $R_d \simeq 1.7~R_{\odot}$, based on photometric observations obtained during quiescence. Lastly, we leverage the transient nature of the system to set an upper limit of $\dot{M}_{\rm acc} \lesssim 10^{-8.5}~M_{\odot}~yr^{-1}$ on the present-day mass-transfer rate. Combining all these with the orbital period of the system, $P_{\rm orb} = 21.3$~hrs, we search for viable evolution paths. The initial donor masses in the allowed solutions span the range $1~M_{\odot} \lesssim M_{d,i} \lesssim 3.5~M_{\odot}$. All but the lowest masses in this range are consistent with the strong CNO-processing signature in the UV line ratios. The present-day donor mass in the permitted tracks are $0.5~M_{\odot}\lesssim M_{d,obs} \lesssim 1.3~M_{\odot}$, higher than suggested by recent eclipse modelling. Since $P_{\rm orb}$ is close to the so-called bifurcation period, both converging and diverging binary tracks are permitted. We report on X-ray (NICER/NuSTAR/MAXI/Swift) and radio (MeerKAT) timing and spectroscopic analysis from a three-month monitoring campaign in 2022 of a high-intensity outburst of the dipping neutron star low-mass X-ray binary 1A 1744-361. The 0.5-6.8 keV NICER X-ray hardness-intensity and color-color diagrams of the observations throughout the outburst suggests that 1A 1744-361 spent most of its outburst in an atoll-state, but we show that the source exhibited Z-state-like properties at the peak of the outburst, similar to a small sample of other atoll-state sources. A timing analysis with NICER data revealed several instances of an $\approx8$ Hz quasi-periodic oscillation (QPO; fractional rms amplitudes of ~5%) around the peak of the outburst, the first from this source, which we connect to the normal branch QPOs (NBOs) seen in the Z-state. Our observations of 1A 1744-361 are fully consistent with the idea of the mass accretion rate being the main distinguishing parameter between atoll- and Z-states. Radio monitoring data by MeerKAT suggests that the source was at its radio-brightest during the outburst peak, and that the source transitioned from the 'island' spectral state to the 'banana' state within ~3 days of the outburst onset, launching transient jet ejecta. The observations present the strongest evidence for radio flaring, including jet ejecta, during the island-to-banana spectral state transition at low accretion rates (atoll-state). The source also exhibited Fe XXV, Fe XXVI K$\alpha$, and K$\beta$ X-ray absorption lines, whose origins likely lie in an accretion disk atmosphere., Comment: 30 pages, 13 figures, and 8 tables. We present the first joint NuSTAR and NICER observations of the ultra-compact X-ray binary (UCXB) 4U 0614+091. This source shows quasi-periodic flux variations on the timescale of ~days. We use reflection modeling techniques to study various components of the accretion system as the flux varies. We find that the flux of the reflected emission and the thermal components representing the disk and the compact object trend closely with the overall flux. However, the flux of the power-law component representing the illuminating X-ray corona scales in the opposite direction, increasing as the total flux decreases. During the lowest flux observation, we see evidence of accretion disk truncation from roughly 6 gravitational radii to 11.5 gravitational radii. This is potentially analogous to the truncation seen in black hole low-mass X-ray binaries, which tends to occur during the low/hard state at sufficiently low Eddington ratios., Comment: 14 Pages, 6 Figures, 6 Tables, Accepted for publication in ApJ

The area enclosed by the two-dimensional Brownian motion in the plane was studied by L\'evy, who found the characteristic function and probability density of this random variable. For other planar processes, in particular ergodic diffusions described by linear stochastic differential equations (SDEs), only the expected value of the stochastic area is known. Here, we calculate the generating function of the stochastic area for linear SDEs, which can be related to the integral of the angular momentum, and extract from the result the large deviation functions characterising the dominant part of its probability density in the long-time limit, as well as the effective SDE describing how large deviations arise in that limit. In addition, we obtain the asymptotic mean of the stochastic area, which is known to be related to the probability current, and the asymptotic variance, which is important for determining from observed trajectories whether or not a diffusion is reversible. Accretion disks around compact objects are expected to enter an unstable phase at high luminosity. One instability may occur when the radiation pressure generated by accretion modifies the disk viscosity, resulting in the cyclic depletion and refilling of the inner disk on short timescales. Such a scenario, however, has only been quantitatively verified for a single stellar-mass black hole. Although there are hints of these cycles in a few isolated cases, their apparent absence in the variable emission of most bright accreting neutron stars and black holes has been a lingering puzzle. Here we report the presence of the same multiwavelength instability around an accreting neutron star. Moreover, we show that the variability across the electromagnetic spectrum-from radio to X-ray-of both black holes and neutron stars at high accretion rates can be explained consistently if the accretion disks are unstable, producing relativistic ejections during transitions that deplete or refill the inner disk. Distinguishability and, by extension, observability are key properties of dynamical systems. Establishing these properties is challenging, especially when no analytical model is available and they are to be inferred directly from measurement data. The presence of noise further complicates this analysis, as standard notions of distinguishability are tailored to deterministic systems. We build on distributional distinguishability, which extends the deterministic notion by comparing distributions of outputs of stochastic systems. We first show that both concepts are equivalent for a class of systems that includes linear systems. We then present a method to assess and quantify distributional distinguishability from output data. Specifically, our quantification measures how much data is required to tell apart two initial states, inducing a continuous spectrum of distinguishability. We propose a statistical test to determine a threshold above which two states can be considered distinguishable with high confidence. We illustrate these tools by computing distinguishability maps over the state space in simulation, then leverage the test to compare sensor configurations on hardware., Comment: 9 pages, 3 figures

We present the first results from a 100-day Swift, NICER and ground-based X-ray/UV/optical reverberation mapping campaign of the Narrow-Line Seyfert 1 Mrk 335, when it was in an unprecedented low X-ray flux state. Despite dramatic suppression of the X-ray variability, we still observe UV/optical lags as expected from disk reverberation. Moreover, the UV/optical lags are consistent with archival observations when the X-ray luminosity was >10 times higher. Interestingly, both low- and high-flux states reveal UV/optical lags that are 6-11 times longer than expected from a thin disk. These long lags are often interpreted as due to contamination from the broad line region, however the u band excess lag (containing the Balmer jump from the diffuse continuum) is less prevalent than in other AGN. The Swift campaign showed a low X-ray-to-optical correlation (similar to previous campaigns), but NICER and ground-based monitoring continued for another two weeks, during which the optical rose to the highest level of the campaign, followed ~10 days later by a sharp rise in X-rays. While the low X-ray countrate and relatively large systematic uncertainties in the NICER background make this measurement challenging, if the optical does lead X-rays in this flare, this indicates a departure from the zeroth-order reprocessing picture. If the optical flare is due to an increase in mass accretion rate, this occurs on much shorter than the viscous timescale. We report the discovery of the unusually bright long-duration gamma-ray burst (GRB), GRB 221009A, as observed by the Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory (Swift), Monitor of All-sky X-ray Image (MAXI), and Neutron Star Interior Composition Explorer Mission (NICER). This energetic GRB was located relatively nearby (z = 0.151), allowing for sustained observations of the afterglow. The large X-ray luminosity and low Galactic latitude (b = 4.3 degrees) make GRB 221009A a powerful probe of dust in the Milky Way. Using echo tomography we map the line-of-sight dust distribution and find evidence for significant column densities at large distances (~> 10kpc). We present analysis of the light curves and spectra at X-ray and UV/optical wavelengths, and find that the X-ray afterglow of GRB 221009A is more than an order of magnitude brighter at T0 + 4.5 ks than any previous GRB observed by Swift. In its rest frame GRB 221009A is at the high end of the afterglow luminosity distribution, but not uniquely so. In a simulation of randomly generated bursts, only 1 in 10^4 long GRBs were as energetic as GRB 221009A; such a large E_gamma,iso implies a narrow jet structure, but the afterglow light curve is inconsistent with simple top-hat jet models. Using the sample of Swift GRBs with redshifts, we estimate that GRBs as energetic and nearby as GRB 221009A occur at a rate of ~<1 per 1000 yr - making this a truly remarkable opportunity unlikely to be repeated in our lifetime., Comment: 30 pages, 13 figures, submitted to ApJL

The discovery of transitional millisecond pulsars (tMSPs) provided conclusive proof that neutron star (NS) low-mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs) comprise part of the evolutionary pathway towards binary millisecond pulsars (MSPs). Redback and black widow `spider' pulsars are a sub-category of binary MSPs that `devour' their companions through ablation - the process through which material is lifted from the stellar surface by a pulsar wind. In addition to reducing the companion star's mass, ablation introduces observable characteristics like extended, energy-dependent and asymmetric eclipse profiles in systems observed at a sufficiently high inclination. Here, we present a detailed study and comparison of the X-ray eclipses of two NS LMXBs; $\textit{Swift}$ J1858.6$-$0814 and EXO 0748$-$676. Some of the X-ray eclipse characteristics observed in these two LMXBs are similar to the radio eclipse characteristics of eclipsing redback and black widow pulsars, suggesting that they may also host ablated companion stars. X-ray irradiation or a pulsar wind could drive the ablation. We conduct orbital phase-resolved spectroscopy for both LMXBs to map the column density, ionization and covering fraction of the material outflow. From this, we infer the presence of highly ionized and clumpy ablated material around the companion star in both systems. We term LMXBs undergoing ablation, $\textit{false widows}$, and speculate that they may be the progenitors of redback pulsars under the assumption that ablation begins in the LMXB stage. Therefore, the false widows could provide a link between LMXBs and spider pulsars. Linear diffusions are used to model a large number of stochastic processes in physics, including small mechanical and electrical systems perturbed by thermal noise, as well as Brownian particles controlled by electrical and optical forces. Here, we use techniques from large deviation theory to study the statistics of time-integrated functionals of linear diffusions, considering three classes of functionals or observables relevant for nonequilibrium systems which involve linear or quadratic integrals of the state in time. For these, we derive exact results for the scaled cumulant generating function and the rate function, characterizing the fluctuations of observables in the long-time limit, and study in an exact way the set of paths or effective process that underlies these fluctuations. The results gives a complete description of how fluctuations arise in linear diffusions in terms of effective forces that remain linear in the state or, alternatively, in terms of fluctuating densities and currents that solve Riccati-type equations.
