Search

Permanent electric dipole moments (EDMs) of fundamental particles such as the electron are signatures of parity and time-reversal violation due to physics beyond the standard model. EDM measurements probe new physics at energy scales well beyond the reach of present-day colliders. Recent advances in assembling molecules from ultracold atoms have opened up new opportunities for improving the reach of EDM experiments. But better measurement techniques, that are not limited by the magnetic field sensitivity of such molecules, are necessary before these opportunities can be fully exploited. We present a technique that takes advantage of magnetically-insensitive hyperfine clock transitions in polar molecules, and offers new ways to improve both the precision and accuracy of EDM searches with ultracold assembled molecules.

We report measurements of the isotope shifts of two transitions ($4f^46s\rightarrow [25044.7]^{\circ}_{7/2}$ and $4f^46s\rightarrow [25138.6]^{\circ}_{7/2}$) in neodymium ions (Nd$^+$) with hundredfold improved accuracy, using laser spectroscopy of a cryogenically-cooled neutral plasma. The isotope shifts were measured across a set of five spin-zero isotopes that spans a nuclear shape transition. We discuss the prospects for further improvements to the accuracy of Nd$^+$ isotope shifts using optical clock transitions, which could enable higher precision tests of King plot linearity for new physics searches., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures, 2 tables

The $4f^6$ $^{7}F_0$ $\to 4f^6$ $^{5}D_0$ intra-configuration transition in Sm:SrF$_2$ is forbidden for Sm$^{2+}$ ions in the octahedrally symmetric substitution sites in SrF$_2$. We report the direct observation of this transition using laser-induced fluorescence at cryogenic temperatures, and measurements of the excited state lifetime and the excitation cross section. We produce cold and dense clouds of atomic ions $({\mathrm{Ca}}^{+},{\mathrm{Dy}}^{+})$ by laser ablation of metal targets and cryogenic buffer-gas cooling of the resulting plasma. We measure the temperature and density of the ion clouds using laser absorption spectroscopy. We find that large ion densities $(\ensuremath{\gtrsim}{10}^{9}\phantom{\rule{4pt}{0ex}}{\mathrm{cm}}^{\ensuremath{-}3})$ can be obtained at temperatures as low as 6 K. Our method opens up new ways to study cold neutral plasmas, and to perform survey spectroscopy of ions that cannot be laser cooled easily.

We find a simple solution to the problem of probe laser light shifts in two-photon optical atomic clocks. We show that there exists a magic polarization at which the light shifts of the two atomic states involved in the clock transition are identical. We calculate the differential polarizability as a function of laser polarization for two-photon optical clocks based on neutral calcium and strontium, estimate the magic polarization angle for these clocks, and determine the extent to which probe laser light shifts can be suppressed. We show that the light shift and the two-photon excitation rate can be independently controlled using the probe laser polarization.

Collisions between background gas particles and the trapped ion in an atomic clock can subtly shift the frequency of the clock transition. The uncertainty in the correction for this effect makes a significant contribution to the total systematic uncertainty budget of trapped-ion clocks. Using a non-perturbative analytic framework that was developed for this problem, we estimate the frequency shift in Al$^+$ ion clocks due to collisions with helium and hydrogen. Our calculations significantly improve the uncertainties in the collisional shift coefficients, and show that the collisional frequency shifts for Al$^+$ are zero to within uncertainty.

Because molecules can have their orientation locked when embedded into a solid rare-gas matrix, their hyperfine structure is strongly perturbed relative to the freely rotating molecule. The addition of an electric field further perturbs the structure, and fields parallel and antiparallel to the molecular orientation result in different shifts of the hyperfine structure. These shifts enable the selective detection of molecules with different orientations relative to the axes of a rare-gas crystal, which will be an important ingredient of an improved electron electric dipole moment measurement using large ensembles of polar molecules trapped in rare-gas matrices.

Unraveling the proton puzzle The discrepancy between the proton size deduced from the Lamb shift in muonic hydrogen and the average, textbook value based on regular (electronic) hydrogen has puzzled physicists for nearly a decade. One possible resolution could be that electrons interact with protons in a different way than muons do, which would require “new physics.” Bezginov et al. measured the Lamb shift in electronic hydrogen, which allowed for a direct comparison to the Lamb shift measured in muonic hydrogen. The two results agreed, but the discrepancy with the averaged value remains. Science , this issue p. 1007

We report on recent progress in the evaluation and reduction of the systematic shifts of the strontium ion clock, addressing effects such as the collisional frequency shift, the servo tracking errors, and the blackbody radiation (BBR) shift. The total uncertainty is currently dominated by the BBR field evaluation. All the other known contributions are at least one order of magnitude smaller. Experiments are underway to improve the BBR field evaluation using thermal imaging of a dummy ion trap.

We present a laser frequency stabilization system that uses a transfer interferometer to stabilize slave lasers to a reference laser. Our implementation uses off-the-shelf optical components along with microcontroller-based digital feedback, and offers a simple, flexible and robust way to stabilize multiple laser frequencies to better than 1 MHz., 4 figures

Two different Master Equation approaches have been formally derived to address the dynamics of open quantum systems interacting with a thermal environment (such as sunlight). They have led to two different physical results: non-secular equations that show noise-induced (Fano) coherences and secular equations that do not. An experimental test for the appearance of non-secular terms is proposed using Ca atoms in magnetic fields excited by broadband incoherent radiation. Significantly different patterns of fluorescence are predicted, allowing for a clear test for the validity of the secular and non-secular approach and for the observation of Fano coherences.

We demonstrate a simple and compact external cavity diode laser (ECDL), where light reflected from the tip of an optical fiber provides feedback, and an interference filter provides frequency selection. The ECDL combines ease of construction with robust operation and exhibits a linewidth of 50 kHz.

Collisions with background gas can perturb the transition frequency of trapped ions in an optical atomic clock. We develop a nonperturbative framework based on a quantum channel description of the scattering process and use it to derive a master equation which leads to a simple analytic expression for the collisional frequency shift. As a demonstration of our method, we calculate the frequency shift of the ${\mathrm{Sr}}^{+}$ optical atomic clock transition due to elastic collisions with helium.

In quantum mechanics, the operator representing the displacement of a system in position or momentum is always accompanied by a path-dependent phase factor. In particular, two non-parallel displacements in phase space do not compose together in a simple way, and the order of these displacements leads to different displacement composition phase factors. These phase factors are often attributed to the nonzero commutator between quantum position and momentum operators, but such a mathematical explanation might be unsatisfactory to students who are after more physical insight. We propose a very sensitive method for measuring the electric dipole moment of the electron using polar molecules embedded in a cryogenic solid matrix of inert-gas atoms. The polar molecules can be oriented in the $\hat{\rm{z}}$ direction by an applied electric field, as has recently been demonstrated by Park, et al. [Angewandte Chemie {\bf 129}, 1066 (2017)]. The trapped molecules are prepared into a state which has its electron spin perpendicular to $\hat{\rm{z}}$, and a magnetic field along $\hat{\rm{z}}$ causes precession of this spin. An electron electric dipole moment $d_e$ would affect this precession due to the up to 100~GV/cm effective electric field produced by the polar molecule. The large number of polar molecules that can be embedded in a matrix, along with the expected long coherence times for the precession, allows for the possibility of measuring $d_e$ to an accuracy that surpasses current measurements by many orders of magnitude. Because the matrix can inhibit molecular rotations and lock the orientation of the polar molecules, it may not be necessary to have an electric field present during the precession. The proposed technique can be applied using a variety of polar molecules and inert gases, which, along with other experimental variables, should allow for careful study of systematic uncertainties in the measurement.

The Pound-Drever-Hall laser stabilization technique requires a fast, low-noise photodetector. We present a simple photodetector design that uses a transformer as an intermediary between a photodiode and cascaded low-noise radio-frequency amplifiers. Our implementation using a silicon photodiode yields a detector with 50 MHz bandwidth, gain $> 10^5$ V/A, and input current noise $< 4$ pA/$\sqrt{\mathrm{Hz}}$, allowing us to obtain shot-noise-limited performance with low optical power., submitted to Review of Scientific Instruments

A frequency-offset separated-oscillatory-field technique is presented. The technique is a modification of the Ramsey method of separated oscillatory fields [Phys. Rev. 76, 996 (1949)], in which the frequencies of the two separated oscillatory fields are slightly offset from each other, so that the relative phase of the two fields varies continuously with time. With this technique, the detection signal oscillates in time at the offset frequency, and the resonance frequency is obtained by using a simple straight-line fit of the phase of this signal. The technique has the advantages of being insensitive to the frequency response of the experimental system, of being sensitive only to noise at the offset frequency, and of allowing systematic effects to be more cleanly resolved due to the simple lineshape.

It is a maxim often stated, yet rarely illustrated, that the combination of special relativity and quantum mechanics necessarily leads to quantum field theory. An elementary illustration is provided, using the familiar particle in a box, boosted to relativistic speeds. Gravitational waves imprint apparent Doppler shifts on the frequency of photons propagating between an emitter and detector of light. This forms the basis of a method to detect gravitational waves using Doppler velocimetry between pairs of satellites. Such detectors, operating in the milli-hertz gravitational frequency band, could lead to the direct detection of gravitational waves. The crucial component in such a detector is the frequency standard on board the emitting and receiving satellites. We point out that recent developments in atomic frequency standards have led to devices that are approaching the sensitivity required to detect gravitational waves from astrophysically interesting sources. The sensitivity of satellites equipped with optical frequency standards for Doppler velocimetry is examined, and a design for a robust, space-capable optical frequency standard is presented., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures

Heavy polar diatomic molecules are the primary tools for searching for the T-violating permanent electric dipole moment of the electron (eEDM). Valence electrons in some molecules experience extremely large effective electric fields due to relativistic interactions. These large effective electric fields are crucial to the success of polar-molecule-based eEDM search experiments. Here we report on the results of relativistic ab initio calculations of the effective electric fields in a series of molecules that are highly sensitive to an eEDM, the mercury monohalides (HgF, HgCl, HgBr,and HgI). We study the influence of the halide anions on effective electric field, and identify HgBr and HgI as interesting candidates for future electric dipole moment search experiments.

Ultracold molecular gases are promising as an avenue to rich many-body physics, quantum chemistry, quantum information, and precision measurements. This richness, which flows from the complex internal structure of molecules, makes the creation of ultracold molecular gases using traditional methods (laser plus evaporative cooling) a challenge, in particular due to the spontaneous decay of molecules into dark states. We propose a way to circumvent this key bottleneck using an all-optical method for decelerating molecules using stimulated absorption and emission with a single ultrafast laser. We further describe single-photon cooling of the decelerating molecules that exploits their high dark state pumping rates, turning the principal obstacle to molecular laser cooling into an advantage. Cooling and deceleration may be applied simultaneously and continuously to load molecules into a trap. We discuss implementation details including multi-level numerical simulations of strontium monohydride (SrH). Heavy diatomic molecules have been identified as good candidates for use in electron electric dipole moment (eEDM) searches. Suitable molecular species can be produced in pulsed beams, but with a total flux and/or temporal evolution that varies significantly from pulse to pulse. These variations can degrade the experimental sensitivity to changes in spin precession phase of an electri- cally polarized state, which is the observable of interest for an eEDM measurement. We present two methods for measurement of the phase that provide immunity to beam temporal variations, and make it possible to reach shot-noise-limited sensitivity. Each method employs rapid projection of the spin state onto both components of an orthonormal basis. We demonstrate both methods using the eEDM-sensitive H state of thorium monoxide (ThO), and use one of them to measure the magnetic moment of this state with increased accuracy relative to previous determinations., Comment: 12 pages, 6 figures

The metastable H^3 Δ_1 state in the thorium monoxide (ThO) molecule is highly sensitive to the presence of a CP -violating permanent electric dipole moment of the electron (eEDM) [E. R. Meyer and J. L. Bohn, Phys. Rev. A 78, 010502 (2008)]. The magnetic dipole moment μ_H and the molecule-fixed electric dipole moment D_H of this state are measured in preparation for a search for the eEDM. The small magnetic moment μH=8.5(5)×10^(−3)μ_B displays the predicted cancellation of spin and orbital contributions in a ^3Δ_1 paramagnetic molecular state, providing a significant advantage for the suppression of magnetic field noise and related systematic effects in the eEDM search. In addition, the induced electric dipole moment is shown to be fully saturated in very modest electric fields (

Cryogenically cooled buffer gas beam sources of the molecule thorium monoxide (ThO) are optimized and characterized. Both helium and neon buffer gas sources are shown to produce ThO beams with high flux, low divergence, low forward velocity, and cold internal temperature for a variety of stagnation densities and nozzle diameters. The beam operates with a buffer gas stagnation density of ∼10^(15)–10^(16) cm^(−3) (Reynolds number ∼1–100), resulting in expansion cooling of the internal temperature of the ThO to as low as 2 K. For the neon (helium) based source, this represents cooling by a factor of about 10 (2) from the initial nozzle temperature of about 20 K (4 K). These sources deliver ∼10^(11)ThO molecules in a single quantum state within a 1–3 ms long pulse at 10 Hz repetition rate. Under conditions optimized for a future precision spectroscopy application [A. C. Vutha et al., J. Phys. B: At., Mol. Opt. Phys., 2010, 43, 074007], the neon-based beam has the following characteristics: forward velocity of 170 m s^(−1), internal temperature of 3.4 K, and brightness of 3 × 10^(11) ground state molecules per steradian per pulse. Compared to typical supersonic sources, the relatively low stagnation density of this source and the fact that the cooling mechanism relies only on collisions with an inert buffer gas make it widely applicable to many atomic and molecular species, including those which are chemically reactive, such as ThO.

The electric dipole moment of the electron (eEDM) is a signature of CP-violating physics beyond the Standard Model. We describe an ongoing experiment to measure or set improved limits to the eEDM, using a cold beam of thorium monoxide (ThO) molecules. The metastable $H {}^3\Delta_1$ state in ThO has important advantages for such an experiment. We argue that the statistical uncertainty of an eEDM measurement could be improved by as much as 3 orders of magnitude compared to the current experimental limit, in a first-generation apparatus using a cold ThO beam. We describe our measurements of the $H$ state lifetime and the production of ThO molecules in a beam, which provide crucial data for the eEDM sensitivity estimate. We report on random lasing action in zinc oxide microparticles dispersed in organic disordered hybrid polymer. Lasing action from zinc-oxide–polymer hybrid is reported at temperature ranging from 6to250K. Coherent backscattering measurements reveal that the transport of light in the sample is diffusive and feedback for lasing is incoherent. The zinc oxide particles provide both the gain and the scattering whereas polymer matrix offers ease of material fabrication.
